Illinois General Helped Create Memorial Day

A few years after the Civil War as the nation started upon its long road toward reconciliation, rebuilding, and healing the wife of one of the war’s union generals noticed the touching devotion of Confederate widows, wives and their children as each year they came together to place flowers and little flags at the graves of their fallen. Mary Simmerson Cunningham Logan was so moved by the devotion she witnessed that she urged her husband, Illinois General John A. “Blackjack” Logan, to look into creating what was to become Memorial Day.
General Logan was a Senator from Illinois and eventually became a candidate for Vice President on the 1884 Republican ticket, losing to Grover Cleveland and another Illinoisan, Vice President Adlai Stevenson. But before all that Logan was instrumental in creating Decoration Day, the celebration of the nation’s war dead that eventually became Memorial Day.
The following is the general order that Logan issued in 1868.
HEADQUARTERS GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC
General Orders No.11, WASHINGTON, D.C., May 5, 1868The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

To honor our troops for this year, I am going to share this story about their mettle. What follows are excerpts from remarks by Marine Lt. Gen. John F. Kelly made to the Semper Fi Society of St. Louis on November 13, 2010. While leading his platoon on a combat patrol, Kelly’s son, Marine 1st Lt. Robert Michael Kelly, had been killed in action four days earlier in Sangin, in southern Afghanistan. Lt. Kelly was only 29-years-old.
Giving Thanks for Our Warriors
“Those with less of a sense of service to the nation never understand it when men and women of character step forward to look danger and adversity straight in the eye, refusing to blink, or give ground, even to their own deaths… No, they are not victims but are warriors, your warriors, and warriors are never victims regardless of how and where they fall. Death, or fear of death, has no power over them. Their paths are paved by sacrifice, sacrifices they gladly make… for you….
“Two years ago when I was the commander of all U.S. and Iraqi forces, in fact, the 22nd of April 2008, two Marine infantry battalions, 1/9 ‘The Walking Dead,’ and 2/8 were switching out in Ramadi… Two Marines, Corporal Jonathan Yale and Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter, 22 and 20 years old respectively, one from each battalion, were assuming the watch together at the entrance gate of an outpost that contained a makeshift barracks housing 50 Marines… Yale was a dirt poor mixed-race kid from Virginia with a wife and daughter, and a mother and sister who lived with him and he supported as well. He did this on a yearly salary of less than $23,000. Haerter, on the other hand, was a middle-class white kid from Long Island. They were from two completely different worlds… But they were Marines, combat Marines, forged in the same crucible of Marine training, and because of this bond they were brothers as close, or closer, than if they were born of the same woman.

Eric Holder Tells Graduates to Forget Sterling, Voter ID a Bigger Threat

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder told graduates in Maryland that they should ignore “hateful rants” like that from Clippers owner Donald Sterling. Holder said that voter ID and “zero tolerance” policies in schools are worse on minorities than anything Sterling could have done.
Speaking before 850 graduates at Baltimore’s Morgan State University on Saturday, May 17, Holder warned students not to get caught up in the hype of “intolerant public statements,” but to be more worried about the racism inherent in the U.S.A.
“…policies that disenfranchise specific groups are more pernicious than hateful rants,” Holder told the students.
Holder’s commencement address comes amid a flurry of cancellations by other speakers who were protested by students across the country. Actions that one New Republic writer saidis an example of how “The rise of liberal intolerance [that] is ruining debate on college campuses.”

Why CC Holders Should Ignore Anti-Gun Signs Posted in Stores

They are popping up all across the country, little stickers on the front doors of businesses, restaurants and retail outlets informing concealed carry holders that they are not welcome to carry their legal firearm inside. But if you are a concealed carry holder you should ignore these attempts to curtail your rights. If you are legally armed, feel absolutely free to enter and patronize those stores with your firearm no matter what these anti-Constitution store owners want.
First of all, these stores have no right whatever to tell you that you aren’t allowed to observe your Second Amendment rights inside their establishments. No mere shop owner has the capability or the right to prevent Americans from enjoying their Constitutionally guaranteed rights.
This may sound like a contradiction for many conservatives. After all, most conservatives and gun owners are very supportive of rights in general and the right of private property owners to do what they want on their own property is no less important than our Second Amendment rights. So, how can conservatives and gun owners on one hand claim to support private property rights yet on the other feel it perfectly OK to tell the owner of that property that they cannot ban a CC carrier’s gun inside?

Clinton In-Law Loses Election BIG

A Clinton extended family member, Marjorie Margolies–the mother of Chelsea Clinton’s husband–was running for Congress in a safe Democrat district in Pennsylvania. Everyone expected her to just waltz into Congress but shockingly she got crushed by a lesser known primary challenger.
Margolies had a lot of things going for her, all of which seemed to assure that she was a shoo in. She was once a Congresswoman, she is Chelsea Clinton’s mother-in-law and she had both Bill and Hillary fly in to her district and campaign for her. She is also a “she,” and was being challenged in the Democrat primary by a white man. That alone would have seemed to put her over the edge, war on women wise.
But it was the Clinton connection that everyone thought would be the number one winning point. Bill and Hillary held campaign fundraisers for Margolies and Bill sent out a robo call on her behalf.

Ill. Democrat Demands Judge Delay Corruption Trial So He Can Vote For Tax Hike

A judge in Illinois refused to delay the corruption trial of Democrat Derrick Smith, a Chicago-area State Representative, so he could vote yes on an upcoming tax hike bill. This will hurt the Democrats’ push to make a temporary tax hike permanent.
U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman didn’t say that Democrat House Speaker Michael Madigan ordered the request that she delay the trial, but Madigan said that without Smith’s vote he will have trouble passing the tax hike.
Smith made the request of a delay so that he could vote for the tax hike but he also claimed that he had a “back injury” from a recent car accident. The judge said that Smith had never complained about any injuries in the several court appearances since the accident, so she found the claim unimpressive.

Middle School Cancels ‘Honors’ Night Because it Hurts Feeeeelings

A middle school in Rhode Island had canceled its night meant to honor students who achieved excellent grades because officials felt that the annual honors ceremony would hurt the self esteem of those more stupid kids who didn’t get top grades.
Parents whose children attend the Archie R. Cole Middle School in East Greenwhich, RI, were sent an email this week telling them that the annual honors night was canceled because administrators were wringing their liberal hands over the “exclusive nature” of the ceremony.
“Members of the school community have long expressed concerns related to the exclusive nature of Honors Night,” the email began.
The school wanted to eliminate a special night to honor kids with high grades or excellence in extra curricular activities and instead have individual, smaller ceremonies based within the events, teams or classes where the kids excelled. This would have eliminated the greater recognition of the high achievers and served to create more understated, less public displays of recognition. In other words, the school-wide platform of recognition would be eliminated replaced by quieter recognition that would not hurt the dumb kids’ feelings.

Michelle Obama Says Kids Should Monitor Parents for Racism

Taking a page out of the political handbook of every fascist society and dystopian Sci Fi novel, Michelle Obama is telling kids to monitor their parents for crimes against the state.
The woman who was never proud of her country until she and her husband were deposited in the White House spoke to a class in Topeka, Kansas last Friday where she told students to monitor their parents for racist speech because she and her hubby can only do so much without good little informants like them back home.
Obama told students that our laws “may no longer separate us” based on race. But she complained that the Constitution can’t force us to “eat together in the lunchroom, or live together in the same neighborhoods.” She then said, “There’s no court case against believing in stereotypes or thinking that certain kinds of hateful jokes or comments are funny.”

No Coverage: MSNBC Ignores Growing Veterans Admin Scandal

MSNBC doesn’t appear to care about our nation’s beleaguered veterans in this mounting medical care scandal. Only one of the left-wing cable network’s prime-time hosts have covered the scandalous treatment of our sick vets and then only once.
The developing scandal has revealed that thousands of veterans have been put on secret wait lists and denied healthcare while VA hospital administrators lie about having done so in order for doctors and administrators to get government bonuses. Many veterans have died while awaiting medical treatment and these months-long wait times only foreshadow what will happen to all of us as Obamacare’s horrid tentacles force its way into our national healthcare system.
But MSNBC doesn’t seem at all interested in news that doesn’t fit its extreme, blindly left-wing bias. The network is completely ignoring the story, even though one administration official has already “resigned” because of the whole thing.

We are getting them, but we don’t know what they are, where they are coming from, and how they are produced. Are they signals from aliens?
Well, the truth is, we just don’t know. But that they could be alien signals is tantalizing, indeed. And scientists say there is no way to rule out that possibility.

Of all the countries in the world that have the potential to become one of the world’s next great superpowers, India is a nation poised to take that step. While there is an awful lot holding that giant nation back, their latest election just might be the next step to a more secure, prosperous future.
This possible new step was the election of a pro business party to govern the nation. For some time India has been controlled by the Congress Party, a very corrupt and typically socialist-styled political party that has done little to bring growth to the country. But the Congress Party has fallen and in a big way.
This week the BJP (the Bharatiya Janata Party) has won a shocking landslide election booting the Congress Party entirely out of power.
Headed by Prime Minister-Elect Narendra Modi, the BJP is a very pro-business and pro-modernity party. Modi has already created India’s version of Texas with his governorship of the Gujarat state, the most prosperous area of India and now he is poised to try and bring that level of success to the whole country.

When one thinks about unions, one usually assumes that it is an organization geared toward guarding the interests of its members, the average, every day worker. But in Michigan that notion seems almost quaint. No, in Michigan, the unions are guarding the interests of union bigwigs and actually dealing away the benefits of members to keep the unions toughs in clover.
Union thugs in the Wyoming Public Schools district near Grand Rapids, Michigan, has negotiated away up to $12,700 in annual salary and benefits for teachers just so it can try and keep a provision in the contract that allows the union to forcibly withhold dues money out of teachers paychecks as a mandatory condition of employment–a provision that now stands contrary to state law, by the way.

Illinois is constantly at the bottom in every metric that measures our most successful states. It is perennially either the 48th, 49th, or 50th worst state in every category. And now we learn that the state is spending up to $12 million a year that it doesn’t have on Medicaid for people who are dead! Can this state become more of a joke?
The Associated Press recently filed a Freedom of Information Act request and uncovered a disturbing memo from the Illinois state auditor.
“State auditors identified overpayments for services to roughly 2,900 people after the date of their deaths,” the AP wrote.
This was more evidence that Obama’s claims that Democrats are fixing the Medicaid enrollment system is a failure.

Vet. Admin Outrage is Harbinger of Obamacare

The scandal at the Veteran’s Administration (VA) is growing every week. As each new VA hospital is revealed to have made sick veterans wait so long for care that many died while waiting, and then subsequently covered up the truth, we all must come to grips with the fact that this is Obamacare writ large.
If you hadn’t been paying attention to how badly Obama’s government healthcare system is treating our elderly and sick veterans, you should. Because with Obamacare this sort of criminal behavior is coming to you and your sick relatives whether you served in the military or not.
Essentially what has been happening is that employees, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare pros at the VA have been allowing themselves to have grueling four-hour work days while wait times for their services have naturally been growing exponentially–after all there are fewer hours in a day that patients can be served if the docs and nurses only work four hours a day!
The cover up is the secondary part of this scandal. The newest report at CBS has only the latest example of this disgusting state of affairs.

Denis Lawson, who played Wedge Antilles in the original Star Wars trilogy and was the X-Wing pilot known as “Red Leader,” has declined to return for the new Episode VII that is just gearing up for production.
“They asked me, but it just would have bored me.”
That is pretty funny, actually.
But I can see Lawson’s point since about the only good Star Wars film was the first one from 1978! The next two weren’t horrible, but the later bunch were just dreck. Junk. Empty, pointless, badly acted, junk.

MSNBC’s Schultz Says Gays ‘Really The Ones Persecuted’ in Nazi Holocaust

Sometimes a celebrity will Tweet something, so blatantly a-historical, something so totally outrageous and insensible, that even they realize how bad it is and will try to delete it right away. But someone will always be there to preserve the evidence.
Well, MSNBC’s Ed Schultz just found out that Twitter is forever when he Tweeted that gays were “really” the ones persecuted during Hitler’s holocaust. Seriously. A guy with a German surname just said that. In public.
The MSNBC host Goodwined himself before anyone else even said a word with a Tweet where he informed the world of who was the “real” target of Hitler’s Final Solution.
“Gay people were really the ones being persecuted in Hitler’s Germany,” Schultz blurted out on his EdShow Twitter feed at ten to 5 PM on May 12.
Schultz accompanied his Tweet with an image of a webpage that reported on the thousands of gays that the Nazis reportedly put to death or otherwise interned in their odious death camps.

Benghazi BS: Eleanor Clift Proves Democrats Are Liars (AGAIN)

Eleanor Clift, inveterate leftist liar, proved once again that truth and facts mean absolutely nothing to Democrats. She appeared on The McLaughlin Group this weekend insisting that Benghazi happened because of a “Youtube video” (a long proven lie) and that Ambassador Stevens “wasn’t murdered” by terrorists but died of “smoke inhalation.”
On the show this liar said, “I would like to point out that Ambassador Stevens was not murdered, he died of smoke inhalation in the safe room in that CIA installation.”
She then lied further saying that the attack on our Libyan facility “was an opportunistic terrorist attack that grew out of that video.”
Everything this scumbag said is a proven lie.
But she will be lauded by Democrats for saying it despite the utter lack of truth of the matter.
In the late 1880s Speaker of the House Tom Reed said, “We live in a world of sin and sorrow. Otherwise there would be no Democratic party.”
If Reed were alive today he’d realize that he made the understatement of two centuries.

Coates was responding to The Atlantic’s Peter Beinart who wrote a May 2 piece reminding readers that “not all Republican opposition to Obama is racist.”
Beinart summed up the feelings of liberals well saying that today they feel both frustrated and liberated at the same time.

Triple Amputee US Veteran Destroys Obama in Open Letter

Senior Airman, Brian Kolfage Jr., is the most severely wounded Airman in US history–a triple amputee. Now the Veterans Admin is trying to force him to “pay back” $4,825 it claims he was “over paid” in benefits.
As reported by John DeMayo of Freedom Outpost, the Veterans Administration Debt Management Center informed Kolfage that he would be back charged for the $4,825. According to the VA, they had been overpaying Airman Kolfage for several years and now they want their money back.
DeMayor has the whole story of this cockup, but needless to say, Senior Airman Brian Kolfage is an American hero. He is a triple-amputee veteran of the War in Iraq who has surpassed all odds and made the most incredible recovery of any veteran to ever survive his injuries. He is a patriot–the kind of man you want your son to grow up to be.
But he seems to have had quite enough of this Obama character! Kolfage recently wrote an open letter to Obama that just puts this whelp of a President in his place.

Dear Mr. President,
I nearly died in a war that you and most of your colleagues supported overwhelmingly, including the two presidents who came before you. Many citizens may not agree with waging war in Iraq to free the oppressed Iraqi citizens, but it’s something that warriors like myself have zero control over. I joined to serve my country and to better my life. I’ve seen things that you could never imagine, and they have made me the person I am today.
Mr. Obama, even though we share extreme opposite views, we have one thing in common, we both attended school in Hawaii. However, that’s where the similarities end. You see, as you attended your exclusive, private school, I would ride my bike to Kaimuki High school in one of the roughest areas in Hawaii every morning and would ride past Punahou, the exclusive private school you attended. I would notice the Bentleys, Maserati’s, and fancy foreign cars that all the kids were dropped off in; wow it must have been extremely rough in Hawaii living that life, right? I could only imagine what it was like to have that kind of money. Fortunately for you, not many people are aware of the school and the upper class citizens who attended it. The tuition to attend your exclusive, private school was more than it cost me to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of Arizona. You talk a big game when it comes to financial inequality, yet I’m quite sure you have no idea what it’s truly like to have sacrifice. You were one of the elitist children in Hawaii.

Educator Called ‘Model for Racial Harmony’ Hit by Lawsuit of Sex/Racial Harassment

The superintendent of Greenburgh Central School District in Westchester County, New York has had a lawsuit filed against him in federal court charging that he racially and sexually harassed employees. This is interesting in that this same superintendent was once lauded as a “model for racial harmony” by The New York Times.
Superintendent Ronald O. Ross is accused of calling staff members “Oreo,” “white devil,” and “dyke,” as well as disparaging Jews and other races, often right to the faces of his employees.
The lawsuit was brought by a principal, four teachers, and three other school employees.

Pope Francis: The Catholics’ Commie Pope Problem is Growing

With his third major address infused with socialist buzzwords, it seems to be official. Pope Francis is the first Commie Pope. And this is a big problem for the Catholic Church and they’d better get a handle on it.
First of all it is disgusting that any member of the cloth would advocate for communism like this Pope seems to be doing. Communism and its sister ideologies socialism and Nazism are responsible for the deaths of more humans than anything man has ever done. Yes, even more than religion–In fact, more than all religions combined. If you are in favor of communism/socialism/Naziism (and there is no material difference between them), then you are an apologist for mass murder. It really is just that simple.
Now, the Catholic Church has enough of a bad history instigating mass murder, so glomming onto communism is not a good PR move.

Fox News Explores the NSA’s ‘Secret War,’ Asks ‘Who is the Enemy’?

That is exactly what Fox News looks to explore with its new special, “Fox News Reporting: The NSA’s Secret War – Who’s the Enemy?”
Fox News will present the one-hour special, hosted by Bret Baer, focusing on the National Security Agency (NSA). The special takes viewers inside the operational heart of the NSA’s headquarters. The program will feature interviews from those within the agency as well as the agency’s critics, including Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), General Keith Alexander and General Michael Hayden, among others.

They’ve ignored the violent region for a decade, they’ve never spoken out about the Islamist radical terrorists who have killed thousands, but now that over 250 girls have been kidnapped by the Islamist terror group Boko Haram, suddenly a handful of Hollywooders have deigned to notice… and weeks late at that.
In April, the terror group Boko Haram went on a mass kidnapping spree imprisoning hundreds of Nigerian girls who were trying to attend school. The Islamists are against girls going to school, naturally. That and they want to money from selling the girls into sexual slavery. Hundreds of grief stricken Nigerian parents have been trying to get the world to notice for weeks.
President Obama has been ignoring the mass kidnapping for almost a month already. But now he is finally starting to pay attention. On May 7 First Lady Michelle Obama Tweeted out a photo of herself holding a piece of paper that sways “#Bring Back Out Girls.”
For his part, the President has begun to offer some help, though no one is quite sure what that amounts to yet.
That is all well and good, but what is galling is the idiots in Hollywood. Suddenly being all worried about the Nigerian girls is all the rage among the hipsters. To express their newfound concern a handful of Hollyidiots Tweeted photos of themselves with stern faces holding signs that say “real men don’t buy girls.”

Fed. Judge Puts Halt to Abuse of Justice in Wisc. ‘John Doe’ Raids

For the last three years a Democrat affiliated Milwaukee County District Attorney has been engaged in a political jihad of sorts, using “secret subpoenas” and illegally invading homes and offices of a wide range of conservatives and Republicans in an “investigation” into collusion between activist groups and Wis. Gov. Scott Walker’s re-election campaign. At last, a federal judge has ordered that the illicit probe be halted on First Amendment grounds.
Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm, two of his assistant DAs, and Special Prosecutor Francis Schmitz, launched a politically motivated investigation into whether or not Eric O’Keefe and his group the Wisconsin Club for Growth–a conservative activist group–illegally coordinated with Gov. Walker and other Republicans during the 2011 and 2012 recall election campaigns. The case was titled the “John Doe” investigation because all the accusations were made anonymously, many of the subpoenas were hidden behind a “secrecy rule”–meaning those accused could not even see them–and many of the proceedings were hidden from the public in secret court proceedings.
Also, as the wide-ranging search warrants were served, many of the accused were held and denied access to their lawyers. The raids were para-military styled, implemented in pre-dawn hours, and swept up not only business records, but personal records along with those of family members.
At last, a federal judge has ruled that this whole Democrat jihad amounts to a witch-hunt that is in violation of the rule of law. Worse, that it is drenched in violations of the rights of the accused not the least of which is their First Amendment rights.

Transparency a Must to Protect Our Ecosystem

April brought us Earth Day and with it at focus on both our ecosystem and those that claim it is their highest interest to protect the same. With reflection, though, we have to wonder if these self-appointed guardians of our environment are really just foxes guarding the henhouse succumbing to the temptation of power and money, even as they demonize those “greedy” corporate interests, they oppose. In many cases we may discover that these supposed “non-profits” are anything but.
A recent article–one of many on this theme–shows that even the so-called mainstream environmental groups like the Sierra Club are becoming targets of ridicule and derision from a brash new breed of environmental activist. It brings to mind the old adage that there is no honor among thieves.
Armed with money from deep-pocketed, left-wing donors have loosed an army of idealistic shock troops. With social media marketing skills and lawyers on staff, these organizations have perfected the art of adeptly (and legally, I might add) picking the public’s pocket while bragging about it. It is, as Forbes magazine says, a costly game of “sue and settle.” Worse, there is collusion going on between these environmental groups and the federal government.
