University Professor Urges Unions to Use Violence Against Mom of Disabled Teen

-By Warner Todd Huston

Several years ago a mother who cares for a disabled teen was shocked to discover that the Gov. of Illinois was going to force her into a union because she gets state aid to care for her son. She protested this forced unionization and the forced paying of dues that goes with it. Now a union professor is saying that unions should use violence against this woman to silence her.

Dr. Alan Singer, a Professor of Secondary Education at Hofstra University, urged unions to take “aggressive, illegal actions” saying it was “the only way” to stop people like Pam Harris from hurting the union cause of extorting business and government.

Mrs. Harris is the woman behind the Illinois lawsuit fighting state imposed unionism (Harris v. Quinn) that has made it to the U.S. Supreme Court of the United States.

South Oregon Proves Gov’t Subsides Are Bad for You

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Beautiful Rogue River in South Oregon

A very long article at the conservative Washington Free Beacon describes how economic recession and a changing timber industry has turned parts of southern Oregon into a “lawless” area with toothless authorities, few police, and empty government treasuries. But what the article really proves is that government subsides created this problem in the first place proving that government largess is a bad thing in the long run.

The piece, “The Lawless South,” by CJ Ciaramella, describes the hard times that parts of southern Oregon have fallen upon. The hard times have come from several directions all converging to smack the area with high unemployment, plunging home prices, and failing industry.

The area Ciaramella is around Josephine County, way south of Portland and near the Oregon/California border. This area is in such bad economic times that the various governments, city and county, have had to make massive cuts. The cuts Ciaramella focuses on are the cuts in policing, hence his “lawless” title.

Unbelievable: Despite Employee Rejection, Germans Still Pushing Unions in Volkswagen Plant

-By Warner Todd Huston

It is a cultural difference that could end up backfiring, but Volkswagen officials at the Tennessee auto plant are still pledging that they will try to help unions invade the plant even though workers voted not to join a union.

Last week American workers at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee auto plant voted not to join the United Auto Workers (UAW) union–the one group most responsible for the utter destruction of Detroit.

But Volkswagen, a German company, simply can’t understand why its American workers wouldn’t want to join a union and are still pushing employees to give the UAW a chance.

Illinois Ranks as One of Worst States for Losing Citizens

-By Warner Todd Huston

Illinois keeps racking up those plaudits as the worst of the worst states in the country, this time coming in second of the top states for outward migration. Illinois has seen more of its citizens fleeing its failing edifice than every other state but New Jersey.

This list is maintained by one of the nation’s largest moving companies, United Van Lines and is compiled every year as the company tracks the migrations statistics of the nation.

“As the nation’s largest household goods mover, United’s shipment data illustrates national state-to-state migration trends,” Carl Walter, vice president of United Van Lines said in a statement. “We’ve been tracking the number of inbound and outbound domestic moves for nearly 40 years, and through our study are able to identify the states that are attracting or losing residents.”

Allowing Unions to Organize Volkswagen is Like ‘Injecting Cancer’ Into US Auto Industry

-By Warner Todd Huston

It seems like a foolish move by Volkswagen for allowing the United Auto Workers (UAW) to organize its American plants. Not only did the UAW screw Volkswagen in the past, but even now the union admits that it is raising union dues solely to replenish its strike fund so unionistas can walk out. It’s like Volkswagen is buying its own rope for its execution.

Or, as Steve Moore of The Wall Street Journal says, “it’s like inserting a cancer cell into a body.”

That is how Journal editorial board member Moore characterized the act of allowing the UAW to organize Volkswagen’s American auto plants. “That one cancer cell is going to multiply and kill the body. It’s a disruptive influence,” he continued.

Worse, the UAW wants to raise dues for members for the expressed reason of filling strike fund coffers, this according to UAW Boss Bob King.

So, if Volkswagen gives in to the UAW’s demands it will only be helping the union to walk out at the earliest opportunity.

The South Rose Again While The North Napped

-By Warner Todd Huston

Northern elites love to look down their noses and sneer at southerners whom they consider loutish hayseeds who are just plain stupid. But as many in the north have dismissed the south, our states south of Mason and Dixon’s line has risen again right under the north’s very nose. Now, the best quality of life is in the south.

Recently Joel Kotkin noted that much of the economic power in the United States today is located in the old Confederacy where taxes are low, weather is pleasant, and jobs are plentiful. Meanwhile, the north is struggling under mounting debt, job loss, and rising taxes and a dwindling populace to tax.

In his article, “How The South Will Rise To Power Again,” Kotkin points out that current trends show that, “the South will expand its dominance as the nation’s most populous region. In the 1950s, the South, the Northeast and the Midwest each had about the same number of people. Today the region is almost as populous as the Northeast and the Midwest combined.”

Whole Foods CEO: Obamacare Will Create a Permanent Part-Time Workforce

-By Warner Todd Huston

The CEO of Whole Foods, well known for standing against Obamacare, recently pointed out that the President’s government take over of our healthcare system will create a permanent part-time work force filled with positions that will never be able to advance to full time work. Because of that, Obamacare is hardly a very American ideal as it puts a government-enforce, concrete ceiling on top of workers who hope to better themselves.

Whole Foods CEO John Mackey appeared on Fox News with Stuart Varney on December 18 to discuss the negative impact that Obamacare is having on the nation’s economy and its workforce.

After 35 years in business, Mackey knows how badly Obamacare will hurt the country. “It’s raising our costs,” Mackey said. “We’ll have to cover things that are expensive that we may not want to cover, our team members may not want to have covered,” he pointed out.

Why Did Liberal Time Magazine Pick Pope Francis as ‘Person of the Year’?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Reliably left-wing Time magazine recently picked the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, as its “person of the year” for 2013. This choice is odd for several reasons–after all the Pope stands against most of Time’s leftist ideals–but maybe the Pope’s recent Marxist-styled attack on capitalism explains the choice?

But let’s find a minute to note how uncomfortable the leftist magazine must have been with its choice. After all, Pope Francis has not yet done anything in office except become noted for his Marxist-like attack on capitalism.

It is clear that Time only picked Francis because of that attack on the single best system ever invented by man. After all, if one looks at this Pope’s other positions one finds the antithesis of Time’s left-wing principles.

Anti-American Man Dressed as Santa Berates Shoppers as ‘Parasites’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Apparently Mark Dice gets his jollies berating Americans. That’s why he dressed as Santa and drove around California’s shopping malls calling shoppers “parasites on this country” and telling them they are “destroying the very fabric of society” on this year’s Thanksgiving shopping day.

With many large retailers opening on Thanksgiving Day, the traditional Black Friday shopping was extended earlier by a day. But opening on Thanksgiving upset many traditionalists. It is easy to understand their ire and to a degree I agree with their raised eyebrows.

It may be a step too far to be shopping on Thanksgiving instead of enjoying family, home and hearth on a day when we are supposed to be giving thanks to all that we have, granted, but let’s try for a bit of perspective, shall we?

What this Dice guy did was a step too far. In fact, in many ways it is he that is un-American in this case.

Senate Hearing on Future of Bitcoin: Legal Tender or Criminal Enterprise?

-By Warner Todd Huston

The U.S. Senate held a hearing on the Internet-based Bitcoin currency on Nov. 18 revealing a U.S. government that is struggling with crafting policy to govern how the virtual currency can be used in the United States.

The Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Government Affairs held a major hearing on Bitcoin and other virtual currencies called, “Beyond Silk Road: Potential Risks, Threats, and Promises of Virtual Currencies.” The Committee also has a video of the proceedings.

Bitcoin has gotten a black eye because criminals and drug dealers have used the currency in an effort to avoid law enforcement and earlier this year U.S. authorities shut down several websites that traded in Bitcoins over this use by criminals.

But recently the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank issued a “primer” on how Bitcoin works that raised the virtual currency’s stock in the world of finance.

Wait, Now White House Admitting We CAN’T Keep Our Insurance?

-By Warner Todd Huston

For years we’ve heard President Obama saying that with his Obamacare plan we could “keep our insurance” and we could “keep our doctor” if we like them. This, of course turned out to be a blatant lie and over the last few days one Democrat after another paraded in front of TV cameras to insist that Obama didn’t lie. But now, all of a sudden, the White House is agreeing that we won’t be able to keep our insurance.

As seen in the video above, on Wednesday, October 30, White House spokesman Jay Carney actually admitted it: we can’t keep our insurance.

Of course, Carney floated a new lie to distract from the fact that Obama has been lying to us for years. He said that all the new insurance plans are “better.”

But here is the thing… if poor and lower middle class people couldn’t afford insurance before, they sure as heck can’t afford it now that it is more expensive. Worse, the new insurance plans have thousands of dollars in deductibles and this makes the “new” insurance worse than useless. After all, if they can’t afford the yearly premiums, how can they also afford higher premiums on top of thousands a year in payments they’ll have to make to doctors before their insurance will even kick in?

VISA Credit Card Company Refuses Business of Firearms Store

-By Warner Todd Huston

VISA credit card company is now beginning to tell merchants that deal in firearms and firearms related merchandise that their credit transactions are no longer welcome with the credit card bureau. This is the newest front launched by the left to destroy America’s Constitutional rights.

Leftists that stand against our Constitution seem to have realized that they just can’t beat America into submission by using the legislative process to obliterate our rights. 2-A rights advocates have succeeded in making sure every state has concealed carry now and many even have open carry. Those that support our Second Amendment rights out number those that want us disarmed so that government can have more power over us. But these liberals aren’t defeated.

Since they can’t win at the ballot box or in the courts (lately) their next campaign is to force the business community to limit customer’s Second Amendment rights and this is one example. VISA has knuckled under to the anti-American left.

After working with VISA for four years and without a single problem, the credit card company has told Hyatt Gun Shop, Inc., one of the largest gun brokerage firms in the United States, that it is terminating its relationship.

Hyatt owner, Larry Hyatt, recently shared the message he got from Authorize.net, the online credit service run by VISA.

How Many Years Would It Take You To Earn These Big Labor Union Boss Salaries?

-By Fred Wszolek, Buzzfeed

Union membership is down but Big Labor bosses’ profits are up. More than 400 labor chiefs pocketed at least $250,000 each last year, even as their collective ranks fell by 400,000 members. They say they are fighting for the working class. Not quite. We did the math…

VIDEO: Obama’s Jobpocalypse, the New Normal?

Last week’s jobs report indicated more of the same for the American people with the economy continuing on a sluggish path. While the unemployment rate dropped to 7.3%, it dropped for all the wrong reasons with the labor force participation rate dropping to its lowest level since 1978. To make matters worse, we also learned that the President’s economy added fewer jobs in July than previously thought.

Chicago Public School Teacher Attacks Capitalism, Says Violent Revolution Coming

-By Warner Todd Huston

The policy group called ALEC (the American Legislative Exchange Council) had its 40th anniversary meeting in Chicago on August 7, 8, and 9, but not everyone was celebrating. In front of the hotel at which the event was held, the unions gathered to attack and one Chicago school teacher took the occasion not only to say that capitalism has failed and that government should be for the redistribution of wealth, he also threatened “violent revolution” unless America acquiesces to union demands.

CPS Teacher Timothy Meegan, who teachers at Roosevelt High School in Chicago, had quite a bit of boilerplate to say about ALEC, but before long he edged toward some more startling rhetoric, the sort that makes one hope he isn’t teaching to Chicago’s school children.

At the end of his canned anti-ALEC speech he lapsed into the sort of rhetoric that would be at home in any speech from the worker’s paradise. In fact, it got downright red-lipped with talk of “violent revolution,” attacks on capitalism and the free market, as well as cries that government should “redistribute the wealth.”

And all this talk of violent revolution was Jesse Jackson approved. The very right reverend can be seen clapping Mr. Meegan on the back after his diatribe is over.

One Photo Shows The difference Between Failed Gov’t & Successful Businesses

Illinois Congressman Peter Roskam (R,IL) recently posted a photo on his Facebook page that really highlights the failure of government.

Roskam posted the photo with the headline “Government monopoly vs. private sector. Just sayin’.”

And take a look to see how right he is…

Here we have a dilapidated, rusting U.S. Post Office Box standing in a line with a gleaming new Fed Ex drop off box and a UPS drop off box.

The difference between a hidebound, failing U.S. Post Office as evinced in its rusting hulk of a post box compared to the bright, shining boxes from the privately run delivery companies is stark, indeed.

Obama Claims He Doesn’t Want to ‘Tax All Businesses Out of Business’

-By Warner Todd Huston

During a recent fundraiser, President Obama told an audience that he and the Democrats don’t want to tax all business out of business. He also said he doesn’t believe in “top down” government.

The President made these comments at a private residence in Palo Alto, California during a Democratic Senatorial campaign fundraiser in the first week of June.

“I know that there are a few Republicans here in the audience,” he said to those gathered. “If you talk to us, it turns out, you know, we’re pretty common-sense folks.”

“We don’t think government can do everything. We don’t think that top-down solutions are the right way to go. We believe in the free market. We believe in a light touch when it comes to regulations. We don’t want to tax all businesses out of business. But we do think that there’s a role to play for government.”

Barack Obama has made this claim many times on the hustings, but his actions have often been at odds with this campaign rhetoric.

California’s New Cigarette Tax Plan Would Embolden Dangerous Criminals

-By Warner Todd Huston

Democrat State Senator Kevin De Leon has introduced a plan to hike cigarette taxes (SB 768 ) in order to pay for more state spending. But this idea is nothing new and has been defeated several times before. Even law enforcement has been against these tax hikes because such plans embolden dangerous criminals

States with high tobacco taxes like New York have reported higher levels of black-market smuggling, a big source of money for gangs and organized crime. By one 2011 estimate three of every five cigarettes smoked in the Empire State was purchased illegally.

Increasing tobacco taxes in California–especially at the extreme rate proposed by De Leon–will bring the same type of crime as that experienced in New York.

But this question has been dealt with by law enforcement in California in the past.

Law enforcement has identified trafficking of black market cigarette sales as a growing problem that costs California hundreds of millions a year in lost tax revenues which is one of the reasons why the LA Deputy Sheriffs opposed higher cigarette taxes in the past.

Square Mobile Payment Systems Modifies User Agreement to Prohibit Gun-Related Purchases

-By Warner Todd Huston

Square payment services is one of those new payment applications that merchants can put on a smart phone and, along with the plug-in hardware, is used like a credit card swipe machine to accept payments made by their customers. This month, however, Square has changed its user policy and is now prohibiting merchants from using the service to sell anything firearm related.

The new user agreement has altered its “Your Square Account” section to add a new category for things that Square won’t allow its service to be used for.

The new prohibition reads: “(23) sales of (i) firearms, firearm parts or hardware, and ammunition; or (ii) weapons and other devices designed to cause physical injury.”

This is the next battle for gun owners to fight. Liberals and anti-Constitutionalists continue to lose with efforts to curtail our freedoms via Congress and the courts so they are attacking our credit, banking, and sales sectors attempting to scare them into putting an end to the selling of firearms and firearm related items at the retail level.

Another area of attack comes in the field of investments. Some Democrats and anti-gun zealots are targeting investment firms that hold stock in gun companies. Others are trying to intimidate cities and individuals into pulling investments out of gun companies.

Feds Killing Off Private Bus Lines Based on Fraudulent Study

-By Warner Todd Huston

The story of the coming demise of Chinatown bus lines in New York City is a tale of multiple failures in both government and the media and shows that both have a bias against entrepreneurs that kills new, start up ideas with unfair regulations, faux public advocacy, and dismal reporting.

A “Chinatown buss” was a new idea in the late 90s pioneered by Chinese immigrants in the Big Apple. These were private buses that cruised the streets looking for fares like cabs do, picking customers up at curbside, not having fixed bus stops or routes, and going where ever the customer wanted to go within a defined area of the city. Because they originated in New York’s Chinatown area, they became known as “Chinatown busses.”

Unfortunately, their success led to their downfall when nosey politicians like Senator Chuck Schumer began to take notice of them. Schumer and other New York pols began to call for a crack down on the busses and started looking to hit them with an avalanche of stifling regulations meant to “save lives.”

To assist Schumer in that jobs-killing endeavor the National Transportation Safety Bureau jumped to conduct a “study” of the safety records of Chinatown busses and purported to have found that these busses had a death rate “seven times higher” than that of other services.

INFOGRAPHIC: Internet Sales Tax Is Bad for Everyone

By -Kelsey Harris The Heritage Foundation

Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) told Bloomberg Television Wednesday he would “probably not” support the Marketplace Fairness Act, an Internet sales tax bill that passed through the Senate this week by a 69–27 margin.

“Moving this bill where you’ve got 50 different sales tax codes, it’s a mess out there,” Boehner said. “You’re going to make it much more difficult for online retailers to be able to comply.”

Small business owners all over the country agree–and they’re speaking out.
Matthew Sorrell, co-founder of Infinity College Bookstore, an online used textbook store, is worried about his company’s ability to keep up with the 9,646 tax jurisdictions in the United States.

“I might have to go through all the transactions that we’ve had every month and figure out based on the ZIP Code that the book was shipped to what jurisdiction they’re in and then remit the tax to each one,” Sorrell told The Wall Street Journal.

Sorrell is just one of many small business owners who are frustrated by the complexity and high costs associated with the Internet sales tax. We put together this infographic to highlight some of their concerns.

AFL-CIO Speaks Out Against… Our Military Vets?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Apparently, the haters at the AFL-CIO decided that military veterans shouldn’t be allowed to take jobs offered by Walmart.

Recently Walmart announced a program to hire 100,000 military vets as a “welcome home” gift when they return from service. This brought the anti-veterans at the left-wing, anti-business union to the height of pique.

In a new statement, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka–a man with a long history of violence and murder–took a stand against our veterans.

Walmart’s recent announcement of a plan to hire returning honorably discharged veterans is more about public relations than honoring our heroes. That this effort was valorized by President Obama and Vice President Biden reflects an acceptance of economic failure out of line with America’s history or future.

Store Owner Installs $350K of Surveillance to Stop Frivolous Lawsuits

-By Warner Todd Huston

Supermarket owner Rafael Cuellar from Passaic, NJ, reports that he had to spend $350,000 to install 69 surveillance cameras, recording devices, and video storage banks in order to stop fake “slip and fall” insurance claims against his store. It’s a cost that just adds to the cost of living for everyone and is a perfect example of the abuse of the legal system that we see every day with this avalanche of frivolous lawsuits.

While the cameras also help Mr. Cuellar track and prevent shoplifting–another expensive problem in retail–the main purpose of the cameras, he says, is to stop abusive, frivolous lawsuits lodged by unscrupulous crooks pretending to be customers.

“Yesterday alone we had a consumer who came back in [the store] and claimed she fell,” Mr. Cuellar recounts in the video, Supermarket Swindle (seen below). “Once the loss-prevention director said, ‘Let’s pull it up on the camera,’ she goes, ‘No, I just twisted my ankle.’ And the story changed all of the sudden.”

Cuellar spent half a million dollars to prevent being inundated with these frivolous lawsuits. Imagine what he could have done with that money if he didn’t need to waste it in such a manner. He’d have been able to expand his business, advertise more, hire more people, or even do more for the community.

Poverty in the Muslim world, he says, is a key threat to U.S. security and to nullify that threat we should open the borders wide and let all Muslims come here to get jobs so that their poverty can be alleviated.

Toure offered the rather startling suggestion during MSNBC’s The Cycle on May 6.

The Cycle co-host began his segment informing viewers that he is now “embracing the open borders movement” going on to note that “We already have open borders for large corporations.”

Kelsey Harris and Diane Katz, The Heritage Foundation

Regulatory costs skyrocketed in the first term of the Obama Administration, which added nearly $70 billion to the already excessive annual burden of government do’s and don’ts. Virtually every aspect of Americans’ lives is controlled to a varying extent by regulation, including how we light our homes, wash our clothes, fuel our cars, feed our families, and obtain our health care.

The consequences are dire: less investment and innovation, fewer jobs, and the erosion of fundamental freedoms.

In a new report, Red Tape Rising: Regulation in Obama’s First Term, our experts detail the number and cost of these many new rules. We put together this infographic to help understand how these costly regulations affect our lives—and pockets.

Supernanny Cass Sunstein’s ‘Friendly Paternalism’: It’s For Your Own Good, America

-By Warner Todd Huston

Cass Sunsetein, one of President Obama’s leading left-wing, university eggheads, has penned an interesting piece in New Republic explaining how the nanny state is really a very important and useful aspect of today’s modern Democrat scheme. It’s for your own good, don’t you know?

Launching his April 8 piece, “Why Paternalism Is Your Friend,” Sunstein evokes New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s (mostly failed, not that Sunstein says so) nanny state efforts to take away his constituents’ freedom on such things as trans fats, sodas, and guns. Sunstein points out that to his mind, all this “paternalism” isn’t so bad after all. Throughout his piece Sunstein eschews nannyism for “paternalism” because it sounds nicer, of course. Optics, you know?

As an example of useful paternalism, Sunstein praises Obama’s demand that the auto industry once again up its CAFE standards saying that the new requirements would “save money” for everyone and “who could be outraged by that”? Naturally Sunstein simply accepts Obama’s pie-in-the-sky claims and simply assumes the new standards will actually have the impact Obama claims it will.

Sunstein ignores the fact that in many cases the technology doesn’t even yet exist to satisfy Obama’s draconian fuel economy demands. He also ignores many other facts. Such as the fact that one of the easier ways to achieve the new standards is to make smaller, lighter, and more dangerous vehicles. Americans would end up with tiny cars that go slower and have less resistance to accidents making drivers and passengers less safe on the road. Should people be outraged about that, Mr. Sunstein? In his zeal to give Obama all credit, Sunstein apparently doesn’t think so.

Firearms Manufacturers Refusing to Sell to States That Pass Strict Gun Laws

-By Warner Todd Huston

A number of firearms manufacturers and companies that sell firearms related products have joined a growing list of companies refusing to do business with states, counties, and other government agencies that pass new laws restricting citizens’ Second Amendment rights.

A list of some 34 of these companies has been posted at a website called The Police Loophole. The site informs visitors that the companies have publicly announced that they “will not sell items to states, counties, cities, and municipalities that restrict their citizens rights to own” the products they sell.

“There are some states, counties, cities, and municipalities in our great nation that fail to allow their citizens to fully exercise their right to keep and bear arms with restrictions such as magazine capacity or types of firearms that are widely available to citizens of other states, counties, cities, and municipalities. However, these government entities do not place these restrictions upon their own employees, such as police officers.”

The “police loophole” phrase is a take off on the so-called “gun show loophole” that gun control advocates use in order to push their anti-gun policies. One good “closed” loophole deserves another, as far as these website operators are concerned.

Cost of Obama’s 2012 Regulations: $236 Billion

-By Warner Todd Huston

Despite Obama’s promise to cut unnecessary regulations, his administration issued $236.7 billion in new regulations in 2012.

According to a report by the American Action Forum, headed by former Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Holtz-Eakin, the direct costs of the regulations force America’s businesses to waste 87 million man-hours to fill out regulatory paperwork.

Adding Obama’s 2012 regulatory costs to that of the rest of his first term adds up to a total of $518 billion in new costs forced onto an already anemic economic recovery.

This onslaught of new regulations comes even after Obama was celebrated for claiming he was going to be the regulation-cutting president.

Indeed, in 2011, Obama released a plan claiming he would cut regulations and reduce the burden on the business sector. Not long after, Obama operative Cass Sunstein praised Obama claiming that his plan would work “to eliminate unjustified regulatory costs and to reduce burdens.” Sunstein went on to say that Obama had done more to cut regulations than any president in recent history.

Sunstein was given one Pinocchio for his misleading claims and for good reason as Obama’s small cuts have been dwarfed by the increases.

American Action Forum says that the costs of regulations have “added tremendous costs to the economy” and finds that the year 2012 tops every year in the past twelve in “terms of final rule cost.”
