Unbelievable: Despite Employee Rejection, Germans Still Pushing Unions in Volkswagen Plant

-By Warner Todd Huston

It is a cultural difference that could end up backfiring, but Volkswagen officials at the Tennessee auto plant are still pledging that they will try to help unions invade the plant even though workers voted not to join a union.

Last week American workers at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee auto plant voted not to join the United Auto Workers (UAW) union–the one group most responsible for the utter destruction of Detroit.

But Volkswagen, a German company, simply can’t understand why its American workers wouldn’t want to join a union and are still pushing employees to give the UAW a chance.

For instance, because the employees in Tennessee rejected the union, Volkswagen officials are threatening to never open another auto plant in the southern US if employees keep rejecting unions.

Why would a company voluntarily open itself to the destructive, unethical, anti-competitive forces of a union like that?

To the American mind, this is insensible. But, it must be remembered, the German companymen are from a European socialist world so their inability to understand why Americans would want to be part of a destructive union is easier to understand. It is a cultural difference. They live in a world where unions run the government, where unions have 100 years of a lock on power, where unions keep companies in a headlock and prevent them from succeeding too well.

I am hopeful that the employees will not buckle to the pressure to join the union, though. Unions are bad for the economy, bad for their jobs, and bad for Volkswagen whether they realize it or not.
