John Kasich and His Big Government Education Disconnect

-By Warner Todd Huston

Ohio Governor John Kasich talked about education at the GOP debate in Detroit, but what he said essentially reveals the disconnect between apparent conservative rhetoric and a less conservative love of big government.

Talking about how the schools in Cleveland, one of the largest cities in his home state of Ohio, have been turning around lately due to new policies, the Governor tried to wrench that into federal policy.

Those local policies may be all well and good, but one sentence he unleashed that night revealed a dichotomy between conservative boilerplate and the usual, big government nonsense we see from establishment and Washington Republicans.

“And, frankly, look, if I were president,” Kashich said, “I’d take 104 federal programs, bundle them into four buckets, and send it to the states, because fixing schools rests at the state and the local level, and particularly at the school board level.”

Notice the disconnect? He began talking about those “buckets” of federal money he’d “send to the states” for education. And why would he send all those buckets loaded with tax dollars? Because “fixing schools rests at the state and the local level, and particularly at the school board level.”

So, what is the disconnect?

CPAC 2016: Dennis Prager and Prager University

-By Warner Todd Huston

I have never written anything about Prager University and I have to say I’ve been remiss. So, with conservative talk show host Dennis Prager appearing at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC2016) it is a good time to correct that slight.

Dennis has been around quite a few years and is one of Salem Radio’s biggest stars, but he also founded a Youtube channel called Prager University where you can go to find some of the best arguments for conservatism ever put to video.

These great videos are concise, well reasoned, and short with great production values. But even more importantly, if you are looking for ways to argue against the left you can’t find better intellectual ammunition that that at Prager U.

If you need help understanding conservative principles or just need help on how to formulate your argument when talking to your liberal friends, Prager University is your ticket to the best source for conservative information.

Here is one example…

#FreeStacy A Few Words With Stacy McCain at CPAC 2016

-By Warner Todd Huston

Here at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC 2016) I ran across an old friend whom I’ve known since 2001 when I first started doing all this political writing and activism full time. But, maybe I shouldn’t be advertising this because Stacy McCain is one of the first conservatives to be banned from Twitter for Tweeting While Conservative (TWC).

At CPAC I spoke to Stacy who has been a long-time blogger and journalist at places such as the Washington Times and asked him just why he was banned from Twitter. And after all was said and done he just plain didn’t have a clue why out of all the conservative Twittersphere HE was the first one banned.

And I ca’t agree more. Sure he was straightforwardly conservative but there are far, far worse users of the social media platform on the right (and you know who you are). So, why Stacy?

McCain, who had over 90,000 followers when Twitter lowered the boom on his account, was never given an explanation from Twitter and he has no firm idea why he was canned except for the fact that he is a conservative.

So, why is it a Twitter crime to Tweet While Conservative? I’ll bet YOU can guess.

In any case, if you want to tell Twitter about your disgust with its anti-free speech policies, tweet out the hashtag #FreeStacy and tell them.

Finally, I would be remiss not to say that Stacy has a great blog called The Other McCain that I am sure you’ll love.

Scott Walker CPAC 2016: We Have Had Much Success in the States

-By Warner Todd Huston

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, the most anticipated entrant into the 2016 GOP primary, and it’s first victim, was the opening speaker for Wednesday’s Conservative Action Political Conference convention and reminded the audience that the Republican Party is stronger than ever in state houses across the nation.

Walker, who led a Republican revolution in the generally liberal state of Wisconsin, noted that we have more Republican governors than ever before and more GOP-led state legislatures than ever.

If national politics is a mess for the center right, the states are a hotbed of conservatism.

It should be remembered that Wisconsin was one of the nation’s birthplaces of progressivism (California being another) and when Walker took the governorship there it was a shock to liberals in general and Democrat unionists in particular.

Walker was a prohibitive favorite of conservatives across the country and man eagerly awaited his entrant into the 2016 GOP primary election cycle, but his campaign flagged early, had internal trouble, and Walker himself couldn’t seem to get his message to resonate. He was one of the first high profile candidates to end his race for the White House.

I am here at National Harbor, Maryland for CPAC 2016 and will be occasionally sharing updates about the event.

Illinois a ‘Sinkhole State’: Rates Second Worst for Liability Per Taxpayer

-By Warner Todd Huston

Obama’s Illinois perennially ranks at the very bottom of every statistic that marks a successful state and a new report on America’s “sinkhole states” finds that Illinois again ranks at the very bottom this time for how much state debt each citizen is saddled with.

The statistics gathered by the excellent Chicago-based budget watchdog group Truth In Accounting calculated how much state debt–obligations like pensions, healthcare plans for retirees, etc–each citizen would have to pay to retire the debt in a lump sum.

The group has dubbed the worst states as “America’s Sinkhole States.”

Truth In Accounting found that Connecticut is the worst state in the union with each citizens owing 48 thousand dollars per citizen to retire the debt. But coming in a close second is the state of Illinois with a whopping 43 thousand dollars per citizen in debt.

Ill. GOP Congressmen React to Obama’s SOTU Speech

-By Warner Todd Huston

Several Illinois Republican Congressmen released statements after President Obama’s State of the Union speech last night. Congressmen Roskam, Hultgren, and Kinzinger reacted to the speech, and so did the President of the Illinois chapter of Americans for Prosperity.

First of all, Obama straight out lied several times in his speech last night. His biggest lie was the claim that he once again trotted out saying women only make 77 cents to a man’s dollar in the job market. This is simply a lie, one the left trots out repeatedly despite it being wholly false.

Obama also misled when he touted how his constantly failing Obamacare law has signed up. His claimsContinue reading

Illinois Democrats Are Planning to Raise Income Taxes on the Middle Class

-By Warner Todd Huston

Illinois Democrats want to put a measure on the next ballot to get Illinoisans to agree to change the state constitution to allow a progressive income tax to be instituted. But Democrats are lying to the faces of every citizen when they say that this would only raise taxes on “the rich.” The fact is a progressive rate would immediately raise taxes on every single citizen not to mention open the door for a constant jiggering and re-jiggering of the rates–a jiggering that would only and always go upward.

Illinois State Senator Michael Connelly is leading the charge to stop the progressive tax scheme in Illinois.

Currently the state constitution has an amendment that stipulates that the state will only have an across the board flat tax for everyone. It won’t be higher for some and lower for others as a graduated tax is. Those who wrote this measure in the constitution put it into law because they felt that a flat tax would help small businesses and give the state’s tax structure some stability. Now, Democrats want to throw that stability to the four winds.

To sell the idea, Democrats are pretending that this progressive income tax would only hit “the rich,” but right at the outset this is a lie. Several proposals show that it would hit everyone right at the beginning.

AFP’s Restore Illinois Summit: Quotes and Governor Candidate Pitches

-By Warner Todd Huston

Today, November 2, I attended the first ever Americans for Prosperity Restore Illinois Summit–a gathering of conservatives and Republicans looking to bring a renaissance to the Land of Lincoln.

There were some great speeches given from such luminaries as conservative activist and Fox News contributor Michelle Malkin, Radio personality and Glenn Beck host Dana Loesch, Congressman Peter Roskam, former Congressman and conservative radio host Joe Walsh, and radio personality Dan Proft, some good panels were held and hundreds of great Illinois conservatives were in attendance.

I did not take video, but Ulysses Arn did. He’s uploading as I post this so later on check out Arn’s Blog for video.

In this post I’ll relay some good quotes from some of those speakers and offer the essential bullet points of the four GOP candidates for Illinois Governor. Now I did not see everyone, so this post will concern only those I was able to catch.

Sponsored by the Illinois chapter of Americans for Prosperity, some 400 tickets were sold for the event–pretty good for a deep blue state like Illinois. Also pretty good since the event was held in Chicago, that deep blue state’s bluest corner. (AFP Ill. Director David From left)

The morning started with an address form AFP chief Tim Phillips (which I missed because I was 45 minutes late to the event) and AFP State Director David From. Then came radio host and Townhall political editor Guy Benson. I can’t say much about his address since I walked in just as he was finishing up.

Walsh Takes ‘Em By Storm

Next came former Congressman Joe Walsh (right), now an evening radio personality for WIND radio in Chicago (http://walshfreedom.com/).

Walsh noted that he may never be able to run for office in Illinois again because of his dour assessment of both the Illinois GOP and the direction of the country. Whatever his future holds, Walsh had a few good quotes that I was able to jot down.

In one instance, Walsh noted that because of how our schools have failed us, “too many Americans are stupid, they are misinformed, they know more about Dancing w The Stars than they do of Thomas Jefferson.”

AFP Honors Illinois Activists Robert and Tempie Lyons

-By Warner Todd Huston

On Friday night, August 30, during its 7th Annual Defending the American Dream Summit, held this year in Universal Orlando theme park in Orlando, Florida, Americans for Prosperity honored Robert and Tempie Lyons for the hard work of defeating a tax hike in the downstate community of O’Fallon, Illinois, a community just east of St. Louis.

The Lyonses, members of both the Metro East Pachyderm Club, a state Republican organization, and Americans for Prosperity, worked against a property tax hike that would have added several hundred dollars per year to every home in the community.

The pair hosted numerous phone banks in their home and spent weeks calling residents to warn them about the tax hike proposal, urging them to vote against it.

When Election Day arrived, the tax hike went down to defeat by 65 percent.

For their work, the Lyonses were awarded AFP’s “Activists of the Year” award.

Speaking of their efforts, AFP Illinois Director David From remarked that when the couple was told how outstanding their work was, they both replied that it was just want any good citizen should do. They just wanted to get the job done, From said of the Lyonses.

Atheists Sue to Stop NY Town’s 911 Memorial Over Cross Image on Steel Beam

-By Warner Todd Huston

An atheist group is threatening to sue a New Jersey town to stop it from erecting a memorial to their fallen that were killed during the terror attacks on 9-11-01 because one of the beams from the World Trade Tower that the town acquired has a cross cut into it.

The town of Princeton is dissing them, the atheists say, and so they are idiotically playing the victim card claiming the cross-bearing steel beam is “grossly offensive” to them.

“While the intention to commemorate those who died at the World Trade Center is admirable and appropriate for a community, the use of such a singular religious image will be grossly offensive and alienating to many people,” the groups attorney Bruce Afran said.

FL Gov. Scott to Call for Major Tax Cuts at AFP Event

-By Warner Todd Huston

Florida Governor to use AFP’s RightOnline/Defending the Dream Summit to call for major tax cuts in the Sunshine State

Governor Scott is in what might become a very tough reelection campaign. I have spoken to a few Floridians here this weekend who agree with that characterization. So it seems he is going to use the occasion of his speech to propose some big tax and fee cuts for his next term.

Scott’s office gave the written text of his prepared speech to the Associated Press ahead of his speech and the AP reports that Scott will tell the AFP audience that if the state can maintain its budget surplus that he plans to use that surplus to give taxpayers a break.

“It’s your money, not the government’s,” Scott intends to say. “Working with the Florida Legislature, we have cut taxes year after year, even while forcing government to live within its means. This year, we are committed to returning even more money to the hard-working Florida families who earn it.”

Americans For Prosperity Protest Outside Blue Cross/Blue Shield’s Chicago HQ Over Obamacare

-By Warner Todd Huston

Some members of the Illinois chapter of Americans for Prosperity mounted a little community awareness protest over the crony capitalist role in Obamacare’s “enroll America” program being carried out by Blue Cross/Blue Shield. The protest was held outside the healthcare giant’s downtown headquarters, today.

In a past press release, Americans for Prosperity said, “Blue Cross and Blue Shield executives met with President Obama and Secretary (Kathleen) Sebelius as recently as April to discuss how they can work together to enroll as many people as possible in insurance policies through the exchange. This is the epitome of a Big Business-Big Government partnership designed to grow private business profits through government force, all under the guise of a non-profit.”

The following are a few images from the Chicago protest.

New York Times Attacking Messenger Over Anti-Obamacare Ads

-By Warner Todd Huston

All the mud-slinging that’s fit to print is apparently The New York Times’ revised motto if a recent editorial attacking a pair of video ads that raise questions about Obamacare is any indication as the Times decides to spend half its editorial attacking the character of some donors to the group that put out the ads instead of sticking to the issues.

The ads were put out by Americans for Prosperity, a group that counts as donors a pair of famous conservative brothers that serve as the left’s biggest boogiemen: the Koch brothers.

The Times spends its first four paragraphs attacking the Kochs on a personal level. Calling them liars, employing class warfare against them, and saying–get out your tinfoil hat, here–they hide their real agenda because it is just soooo evil.

In fact, I almost feel compelled to spell Koch Brothers with a capital “B” in brothers as the phrase has become a noun to the left in their effort to demonize the pair. And, interestingly, as the Times spends so much energy on excoriating the conservative philanthropists it must be noted that the pair are not in control of the ads or their content. The ads were put out by Americans for Prosperity, a group to which the Kochs are but donors–major donors, sure, but not wholly controlling donors.

Oh, the paper does finally get to refuting some of the points in the two AFP ads, but even there they unleash liberal trope instead of cogent analysis.

But as the “paper of record” falls all over itself to take Obamacare’s promises at face value without spending much effort to really looking at the facts, even President Obama’s own administration has lost confidence in the federal takeover of our healthcare system.

VIDEO: White House Spins Obama’s Role in Benghazi: From Competence to Irrelevance

-By Helle Dale, The Heritage Foundation

With the weekend’s grand slam appearance on the Sunday talk shows by yet another official unqualified to talk about Benghazi, the Obama Administration has again shot itself in the foot.

White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer attempted to defend U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice’s mischaracterization of the Benghazi terrorist attack, which she blamed on the now infamous anti-Islam video. It was a poor show.

All of this stands in stark contrast with White House’s handling of the Navy SEAL Team Six raid that killed Osama bin Laden on May 2, 2011. We have all seen the images of President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton huddled in the White House situation room with the national security staff, riveted to live images of the nighttime raid. It was hardly over before President Obama, speaking proudly as commander in chief, went on national television to announce the death of the enemy of the American people. The Administration even cooperated with the producers of the movie Zero Dark Thirty about the mission to kill bin Laden.

INFOGRAPHIC: Internet Sales Tax Is Bad for Everyone

By -Kelsey Harris The Heritage Foundation

Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) told Bloomberg Television Wednesday he would “probably not” support the Marketplace Fairness Act, an Internet sales tax bill that passed through the Senate this week by a 69–27 margin.

“Moving this bill where you’ve got 50 different sales tax codes, it’s a mess out there,” Boehner said. “You’re going to make it much more difficult for online retailers to be able to comply.”

Small business owners all over the country agree–and they’re speaking out.
Matthew Sorrell, co-founder of Infinity College Bookstore, an online used textbook store, is worried about his company’s ability to keep up with the 9,646 tax jurisdictions in the United States.

“I might have to go through all the transactions that we’ve had every month and figure out based on the ZIP Code that the book was shipped to what jurisdiction they’re in and then remit the tax to each one,” Sorrell told The Wall Street Journal.

Sorrell is just one of many small business owners who are frustrated by the complexity and high costs associated with the Internet sales tax. We put together this infographic to highlight some of their concerns.

Pamela Geller’s ‘Uninvited’ Panel Presentation an Attack on ‘Stealth Jihad’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Famed anti-jihad activist Pamela Geller made a splash with her appearance at the special Breitbart breakout panel, “The Uninvited,” at this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

In true Breitbart fashion, Breitbart News–itself a sponsor of the 2013 CPAC–held its own panel and stocked it with some of those voices that were systematically prevented from officially speaking at the conservative event. Seeking to engage with voices beyond those approved by both the Old Media and the GOP establishment, Breitbart News sponsored “The Uninvited,” a panel featuring topics, experts, and personalities that were absent from CPAC this year.

Of the many outspoken guests, Pamela Geller has a record of raising the hackles of the liberal media and even some on the right that are squeamish of her topics and her command of the facts. Geller didn’t disappoint, either, when it came for her time to speak out that Saturday afternoon.

“Truth is the new hate speech,” Geller proclaimed. She went on to warn the audience of a “stealth jihad” that was being waged against free speech right here in America; a war meant to silence any dissent against sharia law and radical Islam. Geller was incensed noting that this stealth jihad is even being waged on behalf of radical Islam by the American right. She was sad to note that the right is too afraid to speak out for fear of being labeled Islamophobic.

All this, Geller hinted, is one of the reasons she had been barred from being part of the CPAC schedule. She went on to criticize CPAC for silencing this subject matter, something she called a crime.

Andrzejewski, who ran for Governor on a reform agenda in 2010, called a press conference on Tuesday morning leaving some in the room clearly stunned when he announced that instead of seeking office in 2014, he would dedicate himself to his various government transparency efforts.

“After consulting with supporters, donors, advisors, and my family,” Andrzejewski said in a statement, “I have decided not to run for office in 2014 election cycle.”

Andrzejewski went on to announce that he is going to dedicate himself to his newest project to put the federal checkbook online. The effort called Open The Books (http://www.openthebooks.com/) will give citizens access to government spending across the nation.

CPAC 2013: OK, Can We Just Be Done With Donald Trump Now?

-By Warner Todd Huston

I was at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland this year but I was not yet at the event on Thursday morning, so I missed The Donald’s speech. I watched the video later because I heard a lot of people wondering what the heck this guy was talking about. And after seeing the video, I have to say this: can we finally be done with Donald Trump in GOP politics, now?

Trump started out his speech talking about how the country was in trouble. Not a big newsflash, that. He also noted that the GOP was in serious trouble. Another newsflash. But then came a slap in the face. Here he was at a conservative gathering and what was the third point he made?

“The Republican Party, I can almost want to say it’s going to be a little bit tough and especially as you get more and more conservative. They get nasty. They don’t like to hear what we have to say.”

Um… what?

Who is “we” and is everyone in your audience is a closed-minded, nasty, creep, Mr. Trump?

CPAC 2013 Wrap Up: The Libertarians Take Over

-By Warner Todd Huston

On Saturday after noon they announced the winners of the straw poll giving us an idea of who the attendees of the event would like to see run for president this far out of 2016. Interestingly, no “establishment” pols appeared anywhere on the list.

The Results Board

Here are the results:

  • KY Senator Rand Paul (25%)
  • FL Senator Marco Rubio (23%)
  • PA Senator Rick Santorum (8%)
  • NJ Gov. Chris Christie (7%)
  • WI Congresman Paul Ryan (6%)
  • WI Gov Scott Walker (5%)
  • Doctor Ben Carson (4%)
  • TX Senator Ted Cruz (4%)
  • LA Gov Bobby Jindal (3%)
  • AK Gov Sarah Palin (3%)
  • Others (14%)
  • Undecided (1%)

So, what does this mean? As one person noted, the libertarians took over CPAC.

Note that all those above were non-establishment people with Rand being the most un-establishment of them all. But Rubio was opposed in his primary by both the Florida and national establishment (they all supported Charlie Crist who ended up switching parties to a Dem. after he lost), Santorum is no establishment guy, neither is Carson or Cruz. Christie is as close to establishment as it gets and even he isn’t totally “one of those” in many ways. I wouldn’t call Ryan an establishment guy, either, as he’s brought them to him–via his expertise on the budget–as opposed to him bending over backwards to join them as most do.

CPAC 2013: Mitt Romney Speaks

-By Warner Todd Huston

Apologizing for not winning the last election, a chastened and humbled Mitt Romney came before the crowd at CPAC here today vowing to be a “coworker” with conservatives to get the country back on the right track.

Romney entered the stage to loud applause, some of the loudest for the day. His appearance certainly seemed to find approval with this crowd.

His speech was very good. One wag noted that he may be the most inspiring loser ever.

The former GOP nominee for President spoke all in big terms today, not much getting down in the weeds of specific programs. He was stopped occasionally by respectful and sometimes enthusiastic applause. He ended to a standing ovation, as well.

One thing is sure, the crowds at CPAC are mainstream Republicans as opposed to strictly hard right conservatives. If this crowd were more hardcore a moderate like Mitt Romney would never have been received, nominee or no, as well as he has been here in the last three years.

CPAC–Rand Paul: Not a Penny to Countries That Burn U.S. Flag

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul didn’t disappoint on yesterday’s appearance at CPAC at one point in his speech saying of foreign aide, “I say not one penny more to countries that are burning our flag.”

When he kicked off his address he joked that he’d only been given 20 minutes to speak but had brought 13 hours of material. He went on to joke that because of his filibuster Obama might ant to “drone” him.

This set Paul up to discuss theObama’s drone program, the National Defense Authorization Act, and how it is borderline unlawful to use drones on American soil without the due process of law.

Washington’s Spending Problem

Over the past four years, President Obama and Congress have racked up huge spending bills. From the failed stimulus to the President’ new health care law to runaway spending on entitlement programs, Washington has blown through every dollar taxpayers have sent plus trillions more.

Families all over America are tightening their belts.

It’s time Washington did too.

Thankfully, this year Congress is already poised to cut $85 billion from the federal budget. It’s not enough, but it’s a good start. Let’s make sure Congress doesn’t go back on its word and try to undo the much-needed spending cuts.

Join Americans for Prosperity in sending a message to Washington: it’s long past time to get runaway government spending under control.

Amer. For Prosperity Il: A Celebration of Ronald Reagan’s Birthday

-By Warner Todd Huston

On the evening of February 6–Ronald Reagan’s birthday–I attended a small event put on by Americans For Prosperity-Illinois (AFP-IL) to celebrate President Reagan’s birthday. We were regaled by a talk from Reagan’s personal, post presidency assistant, Peggy Grande and she gave a wonderful talk.

Ill. AFP Director David From Introduces Our Speaker

Mrs. Grande had some wonderful, heartwarming stories about the President. She was a lucky, lucky woman to have been able to live a decade in the company of so great a man.

Peggy Grande, Ronald Reagan’s Personal Assistant

Best of all, Mrs. Grande let us know of Reagan’s secret life… there wasn’t one. As she so wonderfully put it, Reagan was Reagan. What we saw in his public personae was his personal comportment. He was kind, intelligent, thoughtful, happy… in short the “happy warrior” we all saw on TV was Ronald Reagan.

This was the most revealing thing of all. It meant that there was no false front to Ronald Reagan, no artifice. The fact is, we weren’t somehow being fooled by Ronald Reagan. He was the great man we thought he was in public as well as in private.
