Atheists Sue to Stop NY Town’s 911 Memorial Over Cross Image on Steel Beam

-By Warner Todd Huston

An atheist group is threatening to sue a New Jersey town to stop it from erecting a memorial to their fallen that were killed during the terror attacks on 9-11-01 because one of the beams from the World Trade Tower that the town acquired has a cross cut into it.

The town of Princeton is dissing them, the atheists say, and so they are idiotically playing the victim card claiming the cross-bearing steel beam is “grossly offensive” to them.

“While the intention to commemorate those who died at the World Trade Center is admirable and appropriate for a community, the use of such a singular religious image will be grossly offensive and alienating to many people,” the groups attorney Bruce Afran said.

The American Atheists, headquartered in Cranford, Union County, New Jersey, is saying that since the memorial is publicly funded, then it is an illegal establishment of the Christian religion–the same lie-filled claim they always use.

The beam was obtained by the town’s deputy fire chief, Roy James, who acquired the thing on his own. James maintains that the cross on the beam is no establishment of anything except of the history of both the town and 9-11.

Some of the town council have been wary of the beam, though, for just the reasons the atheists are complaining and have suggested that if they use the beam they display it with the cross side hidden.

Whatever the cross means or doesn’t mean, though, the whole project has been stymied as everyone struggles to make some sort of determination over the beam.
