52 Media Orgs Sign Letter of Complaint to Eric Holder

-By Warner Todd Huston

The journalist group Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press has penned a letter of complaint to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder after revelations that the Dept. of Justice obtained the phone records of some 100 reporters from the Associated Press.

The letter informs Holder that the group was “stunned” to learn of the DOJ’s actions against the Associated Press and notes that none of them could “remember an instance where such an overreaching dragnet for news gathering materials was deployed by the Department.”

“The scope of this action calls into question the very integrity of Department of Justice policies toward the press and its ability to balance, on its own, its police powers against the First Amendment rights of the news media and the public’s interest in reporting on all manner of government conduct, including matters touching on national security which lie at the heart of this case,” the letter states.

The letter continues to outline the legal implications, processes, and the law governing the DOJ’s requests for such records and ends by demanding that the Dept. of Justice “immediately return the telephone toll records obtained and destroy all copies” it holds.

The letter ends with a few final demands.

John Yoo: Obama Created This ‘Leak-Happy’ Washington to Destroy Bush

-By Warner Todd Huston

Former Bush operative John Yoo has said that President Obama is now reaping the whirlwind of a “leak-happy world” that he and his colleagues created to destroy George W. Bush’s administration and is ruefully amused that they are finding the whole thing suddenly distasteful.

In a statement, Yoo, who as the deputy assistant attorney general in Bush’s Office of Legal Counsel in the Justice Department, asserted that this most recent scandal of the Dept. of Justice secretly obtaining the phone records of scores of reporters at the Associated Press, “shows that this administration cares far more about power than political and civil liberty.”

“It has intruded on the freedom of the press in ways that the allegedly power-hungry Bush Administration would never have dreamed,” Yoo said.

New State Dept. Spokesperson Gets Slammed Over Benghazi

-By Warner Todd Huston

It has been 8 months since the terrorist attacks on our facilities in Benghazi, Libya, attacks that ended up killing four Americans including our ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens. Still we haven’t had a concrete explanation about this incident and new State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki didn’t do anything to alleviate that state of affairs as reporters peppered her with uncomfortable questions in her May 13 press briefing.

One exchange during the briefing between Psaki and a reporter named Brad (perhaps the AP’s Brad Klapper) was particularly sharp.

At one point, Psaki avers that the State Department was not privy to the 12-times re-written Benghazi talking points until after all the re-writes were done. The reporter was a bit incredulous at that noting that there is no proof for her blithe claim because her office is refusing to release the records to prove it.

What was Psaki’s reply? “All right. Well, you’ll have to take my word for it…”

Square Mobile Payment Systems Modifies User Agreement to Prohibit Gun-Related Purchases

-By Warner Todd Huston

Square payment services is one of those new payment applications that merchants can put on a smart phone and, along with the plug-in hardware, is used like a credit card swipe machine to accept payments made by their customers. This month, however, Square has changed its user policy and is now prohibiting merchants from using the service to sell anything firearm related.

The new user agreement has altered its “Your Square Account” section to add a new category for things that Square won’t allow its service to be used for.

The new prohibition reads: “(23) sales of (i) firearms, firearm parts or hardware, and ammunition; or (ii) weapons and other devices designed to cause physical injury.”

This is the next battle for gun owners to fight. Liberals and anti-Constitutionalists continue to lose with efforts to curtail our freedoms via Congress and the courts so they are attacking our credit, banking, and sales sectors attempting to scare them into putting an end to the selling of firearms and firearm related items at the retail level.

Another area of attack comes in the field of investments. Some Democrats and anti-gun zealots are targeting investment firms that hold stock in gun companies. Others are trying to intimidate cities and individuals into pulling investments out of gun companies.

Obama Has ‘No Knowledge’ of ANY of These Scandals? What DOES He Know?

Obama and his flapping-mouthed flacks keep saying with each new scandal that President Obama had “no knowledge” of any of these scandals. They claim that others are responsible and he is innocent.

He didn’t know about Benghazi, he didn’t know about the IRS’ attacks on Tea Party groups, he didn’t know of the DOJ’s violation of freedom of the press, he didn’t know… well, apparently he didn’t know of anything.

So… then… what DOES he know? About ANYTHING?

Gov’t Obtains Phone Records of 100 Associated Press Reporters

-By Warner Todd Huston

In the newest overreach perpetrated by the Obama administration, the Associated Press has discovered that some 100 of its Washington-based reporters have had their phone records–both personal and business–secretly obtained by Eric Holder’s Justice Department.

The AP reports that the phone records were subpoenaed as a result of a DOJ investigation into who inside the government leaked information of a CIA operation that ended up in an AP story from May 7, 2012. But the AP says the requests for phone records went far, far beyond the scope of that investigation.

The records of upwards to 100 reporters covered a two-month period in 2012 and consisted of the main AP office number as well as the shared AP lines in its Washington offices. The government also obtained records for the personal phone lines of several reporters as well as their AP assigned phones.

In a letter of protest, AP President and Chief Executive Officer Gary Pruitt said that the probe could not be justified.

Turning Texas Blue: Obama Tours Austin

-By Warner Todd Huston

President Obama recently conducted a “tech tour” of Austin, Texas looking to get more federal money sent to support Austin’s tech boom.

The visit is part of a new campaign Obama is conducting across the country to cajole Congress into adopting some of the economic ideas he offered in his last State of the Union speech and his budget proposal.

In a visit to Applied Materials Inc., Obama said, “We’re poised for a time of progress, if we’re willing to seize it.”

The “it” he wants seized is greater federal spending. Obama has a long history on supporting “green” and tech spending on failed companies like Solyndra, Fisker Motors, and a score of other such bankrupted companies.

The President also warned that if Congress allowed “sequestration” to cut off funds to tech companies and research “We could end up losing our edge” to companies in Asia.

Obama’s Rogue Union Board Dealt Major Setbacks

-By Warner Todd Huston

Upon coming to office, President Obama began using the obscure National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to give big payoffs to unions at the expense of business and to the detriment of our economic recovery but at last his incredible abuse of this agency is under scrutiny.

By and large, NLRB is not one of those Washington agencies that get much notice. In normal times, that wouldn’t be a big deal. The NLRB is a federal agency controlled from the White House that is supposed to act as an unbiased arbiter between the business sector and labor unions, its chief job to write rules to govern how business and labor relate to each other. But since President Obama took office he’s thrown out any pretense of his board being an unbiased arbiter and used this obscure agency to implement all sorts of illicit, union-favoring rules at the expense of business and economic recovery and often in direct violation of what the courts have ruled.

At long last, though, Obama’s NLRB is seeing its assumed powers questioned. The most recent reversal of fortunes occurred on April 7 when the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the NLRB’s poster rule with U.S. Circuit Judge A. Raymond Randolph ruing that the NLRB had exceeded its legal authority to force over 6 million employers to post signs advertising unions to employees.

Mom of Slain Son Bids Hillary Clinton a Happy Mother’s Day

-By Warner Todd Huston

Pat Smith’s son, Sean, was murdered by terrorists in Benghazi, Libya (9/11/12) thanks to Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama’s negligence. On Sunday, she has a message for Obama and Hillary.

“I want to wish Hillary a Happy Mother’s Day,” Smith said. “She has her child. I don’t have mine because of her.”

Mrs. Smith appeared on the Mike Huckabee show on Sunday, May 12, to deliver her message.

Huckabee asked Smith if she was comforted at all by the Congressional hearings about the attacks.

“Absolutely not. I am still waiting to answers to just about everything,” she said.

Happy Mother’s Day, indeed.

Last Year, Media Ridiculed Claims IRS Targeted Conservatives

-By Warner Todd Huston

During the 2012 presidential campaign, many conservatives complained that the IRS was targeting them for harassment, some even claimed that Obama had an “enemies list.” During that time the progressive media complex ridiculed these claims but now the IRS itself has come forward to “apologize” for just the sort of behavior that conservatives accused it of during the late campaign for president.

The New York Times, led the way last year not only dismissing claims that the IRS was acting in a partisan manner by saying that the IRS was just doing its job, but the so-called paper of record went further calling for the taxing agency to step up its efforts to an even higher degree.

In another report, the Times attempted to spin the whole discussion as little else but a Republican effort to create a false political narrative.

Huffington Post joined that line of attack with a piece by Dan Froomkin who similarly praised the IRS for its targeting of political groups and insisting that more be done.

Froomkin additionally reported that everything the IRS was doing was “perfectly normal and appropriate.”

NYTimes Still Excusing IRS Audits of Conservative Groups

-By Warner Todd Huston

On May 10, a spokeswoman for the Internal Revenue Service admitted that over the last year–during the presidential election, at that–the agency had conducted “overzealous audits” of the tax-exempt status of dozens of conservative activists and Tea Party groups. Last year The New York Times dismissed claims that the IRS was abusing its powers but even with these new admissions by the IRS the Times is underplaying the facts.

Last year several conservative groups began to notice that they were getting audited an awful lot and some banded together with Jay Selkulow’s American Center for Law and Justice to call for an investigation into the matter. Sekulow accused the IRS of launching a campaign intended to stifle free speech. At the time, Landmark Legal Foundation also demanded that the IRS conduct an investigation into agency misconduct.

Not long thereafter the Times ridiculed complaints made by conservative groups saying that the IRS was just doing its job.

Democrats Calling Media Trying to Undermine Benghazi Testimony

-By Warner Todd Huston

According to Lisa Myers of NBC news, Democrats are starting to get worried about the testimony delivered by the Benghazi whistleblowers on Wednesday. Myers says she has been the recipient of phone calls by Democrats who are trying to undermine that testimony.

“There is something called Benghazi going on,” Myers said on Friday’s MSNBC Morning Joe program. “And I think the Democrats now are starting to worry about it. I started–I got calls from a number of Democrats yesterday trying to undermine Greg Hicks’s testimony, saying he wasn’t demoted, etc. So I think they feel that some damage was done by those three witnesses on Wednesday.”

This after the progressive media establishment is finally starting to report that even as the attacks in Libya were underway on Sept. 11, 2012, the Obama administration was actively re-writing events to put a political spin on the story to help coverup what was really going on.

INFOGRAPHIC: Internet Sales Tax Is Bad for Everyone

By -Kelsey Harris The Heritage Foundation

Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) told Bloomberg Television Wednesday he would “probably not” support the Marketplace Fairness Act, an Internet sales tax bill that passed through the Senate this week by a 69–27 margin.

“Moving this bill where you’ve got 50 different sales tax codes, it’s a mess out there,” Boehner said. “You’re going to make it much more difficult for online retailers to be able to comply.”

Small business owners all over the country agree–and they’re speaking out.
Matthew Sorrell, co-founder of Infinity College Bookstore, an online used textbook store, is worried about his company’s ability to keep up with the 9,646 tax jurisdictions in the United States.

“I might have to go through all the transactions that we’ve had every month and figure out based on the ZIP Code that the book was shipped to what jurisdiction they’re in and then remit the tax to each one,” Sorrell told The Wall Street Journal.

Sorrell is just one of many small business owners who are frustrated by the complexity and high costs associated with the Internet sales tax. We put together this infographic to highlight some of their concerns.

AP Claims Official House Benghazi Hearings Just ‘GOP Hearing’

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Associated Press on Wednesday mischaracterized the Benghazi hearings as merely a Republican event even though it is an official House investigation.

In the headline of its report, the Associated Press downplayed the official hearings of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee–that has both Democrats and Republicans on it–into the failures surrounding the 2012 attacks on our embassy personnel in Benghazi, Libya. The AP characterized the official hearings as “GOP hearings” making the proceedings seem like a mere political witch-hunt.

The piece written by Donna Cassata was headlined, “GOP Benghazi hearing stokes political controversy.”

The hearing on Benghazi is not a “GOP hearing,” but is instead an official hearing of the House with representatives of both parties sitting at the head of the proceedings.

The bias in the piece doesn’t begin and end in the headline, either. Cassata does not report the hearings straight but goes on to put her opinion into the description of the day’s events.

Her fourth paragraph is a perfect example of that bias (my bold).

Slate: Claims of Benghazi Cover Up is ‘Pure Fiction’

-By Warner Todd Huston

As the Benghazi hearings begin anew on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, it is worth remembering that Dave Weigel of Slate.com, the former Journolist member who delights in attempting to debunk conservative narratives, declared in December that Republican suspicions of a Benghazi cover-up by the Obama administration were “pure fiction.”

Weigel cited the report on the Benghazi debacle issued by the State Department’s Accountability Review Board to argue that conservatives and Republicans are barking up the wrong tree with questions on the murder of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans during the attacks on September 11, 2012.

Certainly Weigel is right to note that the State Dept. report doesn’t exactly jibe with many of the reports made during the early hours and days after the attacks by “conservative media, especially,” as Weigel puts it. It would be a minor miracle if they had, after all. Rarely do early reports of any conflagration fit the final facts.

And since Weigel drew his premature conclusions, the Accountability Review Board has itself come under review, partly, according to Fox News, for apparently failing to interview key witnesses to the attack.

Bloomberg Assembles Leftist Cartoonists to Attack Second Amendment

-By Warner Todd Huston

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is touting his newest effort to cancel the U.S. Constitution and the Second Amendment with a gathering of cartoons by 21 cartoonists who have taken a stand against our Constitutional right to self-protection.

As Bloomie has it, they are “the nation’s best loved cartoonists.” But what Bloomberg doesn’t mention is that this gathering isn’t just a bunch of cartoonists goaded to sudden action by current events, but is a list of artists many of whom are well known as left-wing activists. One is even a La Raza activist and is in favor of giving the southwestern US “back” to Mexico.

Far from just a handful of “beloved cartoonists” who found that recent events have proven that a new approach to the Second Amendment is warranted, these folks are long-time left-wingers that have attacked traditional American principals for decades.

The artists are gathered together under the rubric “Cartoonists Demand Action to End Gun Violence” as sponsored by Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

Network TV Still Ignoring Gosnell

-By Warner Todd Huston

Abortionist Kermit Gosnell has been on trial in Pennsylvania for seven weeks accused of murdering patients and killing babies born alive in a filthy clinic staffed by untrained, unlicensed assistants, but the trial has barely made a blip on big three network news programs.

The trial has been shocking, to say the least, but the networks have still ignored it. But the networks are obviously not trying to shield viewers from shocking trials. A recent review of network programming by the Media Research Center reveals that not all shocking trials are equal in the network’s eyes as they’ve covered dozens of them over the last 42 days.

MRC has found that hundreds of minutes of airtime have been dedicated to the Amanda Knox trial in Spain and the Arizona-based trial of Jodi Arias who is accused of the brutal murder of her boy friend Travis Alexander.

While practically ignoring the Gosnell trial, MRC found that ABC’s Good Morning America has visited the Arias trail 22 times in the last seven weeks alone. Along with the Arias trial, GMA has hit several other sensational trials amounting to 41 separate stories since the Gosnell trial started.

Infographic: Obama’s Red Tape Rising

Kelsey Harris and Diane Katz, The Heritage Foundation

Regulatory costs skyrocketed in the first term of the Obama Administration, which added nearly $70 billion to the already excessive annual burden of government do’s and don’ts. Virtually every aspect of Americans’ lives is controlled to a varying extent by regulation, including how we light our homes, wash our clothes, fuel our cars, feed our families, and obtain our health care.

The consequences are dire: less investment and innovation, fewer jobs, and the erosion of fundamental freedoms.

In a new report, Red Tape Rising: Regulation in Obama’s First Term, our experts detail the number and cost of these many new rules. We put together this infographic to help understand how these costly regulations affect our lives—and pockets.

Leftist Lies Against Koch Brothers in Lee Fang’s New Book

-By Warner Todd Huston

Lee Fang has cobbled together a new book ostensibly meant as a guide to things that conservative activists are doing for their cause and in his chapter on the Koch brothers he regurgitates dozens of un-sourced lies that have little basis in fact even as he presents them as fact.

Firstly we must dispense with any pretense that Lee Fang is anything but a screedist, a young fellow whose only goal is to churn emotional hatred against conservatives. He isn’t interested in truth or facts and his style is to just spin loose associations into grand conspiracies in order to push his narrative.

Fang is so bad that he has had to be scolded by his own publishers for his lies. He “writes” for the left-wing magazine The Nation and why they continue to employ him after his years of outright lies is anyone’s guess.

Take Fang’s April 22 piece on how climate “reform” was “poisoned from the inside.” His piece was so filled with innuendo, lies, and distortions that The Nation had to post a three-paragraph disclaimer telling readers that everything they wee about to read was essentially untrue. This warning to the reader was half as long as Fang’s piece!

Anyway, in a Washington Free Beacon article amusing titled “Half Baked,” Lachlan Markay does a great job deconstructing Fang’s latest lies about the Kochs

Pigford Across the Media

-By Warner Todd Huston

Coming years late to the story, The New York Times finally took a look at the Pigford scandal that Andrew Breitbart, Lee Stranahan and the Breitbart team exposed starting in 2010. At last the story is making an appearance across the media.

On Friday morning, April 26, the Times published a long piece titled, “U.S. Opens Spigot After Farmers Claim Discrimination” in which Andrew Breitbart and Congressman Steve King were credited for early criticism of the government’s corruption in the scandal.

It should be remembered that the left-wing Media Matters for America scoffed at Andrew Breitbart calling his interest in Pigford the “stupidest conspiracy theory” on the Internet. Now that MM’s precious New York Times has at last come to Andrew’s side on this issue, one wonders how long MM will keep its anti-Breitbart/Pigford posts up on its site.

A nice recap of the scandal penned by Joel Pollak can be seen on Breitbart.com.

Andrew Was Right: National Review’s Pigford Editorial

-By Warner Todd Huston

On April 29, one of conservatism’s leading journals, National Review, published a lead editorial on the Pigford scandal not only noting at the outset that Andrew Breitbart was right all along, but that the scandal deserves more attention nationally.

As it wraps up, the NR piece arrives at the logical conclusion that Obama’s expansion of Pigford payouts “resembles in organization and aim a criminal conspiracy of breathtaking proportions, and one in which the federal government was first complicit and then ultimately responsible.”

Just so. But along the way, NR gives readers some delicious outrage over the monumental waste, lies, and abuse of authority that Andrew saw since day one.

NR expresses hope that in the wake of the recent New York Times examination of the criminal actions that is Pigford, maybe more eyes will be brought to the scandal and notes that the truth of Pigford is “worse than was previously thought.”

AP Edits ‘Muslim’ Out of Obama’s ‘Muslim Socialist’ WHCD Joke

-By Warner Todd Huston

In some of its reports on Saturday night’s White House Correspondents Dinner (WHCD), the Associated Press chose to edit one of President Obama’s own gags. The AP strangely edited out the word “Muslim” in one of Obama’s self-referential jokes.

Early in his comments on April 26, President Obama made reference to his young life with a joke and a visual image projected on the video screen.

The President joked that everyone loves Michelle and mentioned that she has even appeared on magazine covers. The President said he also appeared on a magazine cover and showed a humorous mock magazine cover on the video screens. The faux cover showed the President golfing on the cover of “Senior Leisure.”

President Obama then said, “These days I look in the mirror and have to admit, I’m not the strapping young Muslim Socialist that I used to be. Time passes, you get a little gray.”

This joke must have been too insensitive for the AP in some of its reports, however.

(VIDEO) Hard Journalism: Chelsea Clinton Interviews Geico’s Gecko

-By Warner Todd Huston

On the April 25 broadcast of Rock Center, NBC’s special correspondent Chelsea Clinton “interviewed” the Geico Gecko, that fictional cartoon character that fronts many Geico Insurance company television ads.

The “interview” presented the Clinton progeny reaching the height of her journalism career asking questions with the sort of stilted delivery readily seen in any 7th grade stage play while the animated insurance spokesman replied with light hearted quips. Hard hitting journalism, indeed.

NBC billed the segment as “part of Rock Center’s look at some of the most popular television advertisements, Special Correspondent Chelsea Clinton talked to Geico’s Gecko. The Gecko reflected on his new book and his embarrassing high school yearbook photo along with his rise as one of television’s most popular ad men.”

Oddly, even in the description NBC acted as if the cartoon character is a real, living being.

Conan O’Brien Slams Republicans, Democrats, the Press at WHCD

-By Warner Todd Huston

Typical of when a Democrat is president, during a keynote monologue at the White House Correspondents Dinner (WHCD), the President is spared from too many mean spirited barbs. In keeping with that tradition, TBS’ Conan O’Brien poked a lot of fun at Republicans and conservatives with a bit sharper stick than he used to poke Democrats.

This year’s WHCD started with a slew of media outlets discussing the now annual slam on the event as delivered by long-time Washington reporter Tom Brokaw. The semi-retired NBC anchor has lamented for some time that the whole party atmosphere, replete with musicians and Hollywood celebrities–fittingly, this year the Duck Dynasty folks attended–makes a mockery of the seriousness of the media’s work.

After the President delivered his spiel on Saturday night, late night comedian Conan O’Brien took the stage to deliver the keynote address.

Unsurprisingly, Republicans showed up early as the comedian’s targets and naturally, even though he hasn’t been in office for over four years, now, an obligatory slam of George W. Bush as “stupid” had to be delivered.

Near the top of his address Conan mentioned the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Library joking that the library had “Millions of books, articles and documents and if you go you can be the first to read them.”

The White House Correspondents Dinner (WHCD) has been a mainstay Washington to-do for years. Lately, however, it has come under fire for turning Hollywood–literally. In the wake of the event, some outlets continued the bashing but most lavished attention on the dinner or at least lauded it as harmless fun.

One of the quickest to slam the event was Sarah Palin, who did not attend. From her Twitter account, Palin indulged some rather salty language in criticism.

Britain’s Guardian newspaper was so fascinated by the whole thing, the paper set Jim Newell to live blog the night.

Newell opened his coverage with a nice slap at the pretentiousness of it all.

CNN’s New ‘Crossfire’ To Star Newt Gingrich & Stephanie Cutter?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Early in April, CNN reported that it was thinking of resurrecting Crossfire, the left-right political debate show it canceled in 2005. Now, as the network tries to regain its faded status as a cable leader, the network is reportedly wooing Democrat strategist Stephanie Cutter and longtime conservative bon vivant Newt Gingrich to helm a re-launch of the show.

Crossfire debuted on CNN in 1982 and was originally hosted by Tom Braden and Pat Buchanan the duo who first invented the premise as a talk radio show. As the years passed a series of hosts came and went until the series ended in failing ratings amid criticism of its often times shrill rhetoric.

Sources now tell Politico that Cutter and Gingrich are both in negotiations to host the re-launch. Neither personality returned calls to confirm their status.

Gingrich, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and past candidate for the 2012 GOP nomination for President, is well known. Stephanie Cutter, however, is notorious for her work as Obama’s former deputy campaign manager.
