One Down: Emory University to End Journalism Program

-By Warner Todd Huston

As more and more newspapers turn off their printing presses for good and more journalists are fired or laid off, expect to see more universities and colleges following Emory University’s lead by closing down journalism programs.

Claiming that the shuttering was, “designed to enhance areas of distinction, transform areas of excellence into areas of eminence, and allocate resources to invest in important new and emerging growth areas,” Emory abruptly announced the pending program changes last Friday.

Of course, some J-students are none too happy about the announcement and several got together to pen a complaint letter.

NFL Pulls Ref From Game Over ‘Open Rooting,’ Will Media?

-By Warner Todd Huston

The National Football League seems to have done it right. For last Sunday’s Saints vs Panthers game, the NFL pulled a referee from the game because they were alerted to his Facebook page that showed he was a big fan of the Saints. One wonders if the Old Media establishment should do the same thing with its political coverage?

NFL side judge Brian Stropolo was pulled from the game and replaced by alternate Tim Keese after the league found out that Stropolo had posted photos of himself in Saints gear on his Facebook page.

The League felt it was a clear conflict of interest and decided that the ref could not be a fair judge of a game featuring his favorite team.

One would hope that the Old Media would take a lesson from the NFL. Shouldn’t the media bench anyone that is blatantly rooting for Obama and the Democrats?

CNN’s Peter Hamby: Team Obama’s Propagandist

-By Warner Todd Huston

Peter Hamby of CNN seems to have dropped all pretense of being an unbiased journalist. Not only is he tweeting out the donations page of Obama’s campaign website, but he is also Tweeting that Paul Ryan is a neo-Confederate, or something.

Last week Hamby indulged his inner partisan at least twice on his Twitter account. The first time was on Sept. 13 when he was reporting on an Obama appearance in Wisconsin. Hamby noted that Obama was going to Milwaukee and in his Tweet also gave out the Obama donations page address.

Wisconsin officially a battleground: President Barack Obama going to Milwaukee next weekend > donate.barackobama.com/page/contribut…

I guess helping team Obama raise money for his re-election campaign is now considered to be “journalism.”

No Pledge of Allegiance: NPR Reporter Places His Job Above Country

-By Warner Todd Huston

NPR’s Ari Shapiro doesn’t stand for the national anthem and won’t recite the pledge of allegiance. Why? Because he places his position as a “journalist” above love of county. But, one wonders, does Shapiro understand that without this country he wouldn’t be free to be a journalist?

On his NPR blog, Shapiro was thoroughly pleased with himself for imagining that a job was more important than his country, so much so that he thought enlightening the world with the debate on his Twitter account over his lack of patriotism was warranted.

The NPR reporter noted that at a recent Romney rally he was one of the few that refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and that refusal made him take to Twitter with his anti-patriotism position.

Joe Klein Desperate to Change Debate From Obama’s Foreign Policy Failures

-By Warner Todd Huston

As our embassies burn and our foreign officers are being murdered overseas, TIME Magazine’s Joe Klein is desperate to change the current narrative of Obama’s major failures in the Middle East. So, in his latest piece, Klein wants to go back to talking about Mitt Romney’s Massachusetts healthcare policies.

Who can blame Klein for trying this? After all, from the Obama-loving media’s perspective talking about Mitt Romney’s garbled healthcare positions is a better plan than talking about Obama telling Egypt they aren’t our ally, Obama skipping all his intelligence briefings so he can go golfing and attend fundraisers, and his administration’s utter failure to detect the coordinated attacks that were perpetrated against our embassies and foreign service personnel in the Middle East on Sept. 11 and 12.

But what makes Klein’s “The Mitt Mirage” so laughable is his blindly partisan assertions that the Democrat national convention was “extremely successful.” This is a silly claim that even many of his own compadres in the Old Media establishment can’t force themselves to say.

Just What We Need: More Lefty Magazines to Cover Elections

-By Warner Todd Huston

As if there wasn’t enough shilling going on for Obama in the entertainment/publishing/news industry, word is that a whole line up of Magazines are starting new efforts to cover the 2012 elections.

President Obama was criticized last month for avoiding traditional news outlets even while giving puffball interviews to the likes of Glamour magazine. But Glamour’s interview was an example of a magazine that usually doesn’t bother much with politics but that is now getting more involved for 2012.

For Glamour it’s all about pushing the left’s claim that the GOP is indulging a “war on women.” Said Glamour editor in chief Cindi Leive, “There’s a lot of meat there for us to cover.”

Another women’s magazine, Cosmopolitan, also jumped into politics this year to push the left’s favorite women’s issues.

Why is the EPA Funding a Private Newspaper?

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Environmental Protection Agency has been indulging its inner propagandist by spending at least $3.5 million to float newspaper that is purportedly “reporting” on the EPA’s pet issues. Unfortunately for the readers of this newspaper, the fact that the EPA is its sugar daddy is never told the reading public.

So much for an independent press!

The newspaper in question is the Chesapeake Bay Journal, a free publication that appears monthly across the Mid-Atlantic states. Environmental themed articles from this paper have also appeared in such newspapers as The Baltimore Sun.

This is no partisan issue, either as this has been going on for at least two decades.

CNN Hides Facts: Cairo Riots Not About ‘Offensive’ American Movie, But Freedom of Blind Sheik The Goal

-By Warner Todd Huston

Just before the crowd in Cairo, Egypt erupted in violence against the U.S. embassy there, CNN’s cameras were in the capital interviewing protesters who said that the main purpose for their protest was to have Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman (known as the ‘Blind Sheik’) released from a U.S. prison. Yet as soon as the riots began, CNN began to push the false story that the riots were sparked by some low-budget American movie that denigrated the Prophet Muhammad.

The very day before rioters stormed the U.S. embassy in Cairo, CNN’s Nic Robertson filmed an interview with a handful of Islamists right outside the U.S. embassy. One of those protesters that CNN interviewed was the Blind Sheik’s brother, Mohamed al Zawahiri.

The Blind Sheik’s brother had an absurd “peace plan” proposal that he thought would end the blood shed between Muslims and the west and it was this so-called plan for peace that formed the basis for CNN’s report. But what is more interesting about the interview was that it serves as proof that the riots that happened hours later were not about any movie but were started in order to push for the release of The Blind Sheik.

Egyptian President Morsi has in the past expressed solidarity with Sheik Abdel-Rahman claiming that as Egypt’s president he’d work to have the U.S. free the terrorist. Morsi claimed this only two months ago proving that the release of Abdel-Rahman has been a key issue in his country.

Roll Call Claims a ‘Republican Split’ Over Romney Embassy Comments, Offers no Examples

-By Warner Todd Huston

Along with the rest of the Old Media establishment, Washington D.C.-based newspaper Roll Call also attacked Mitt Romney for having dared to criticize the Obama administration for its failures in the Middle East after the attacks on our embassies in Egypt and Libya. To push the anti-Romney narrative, Roll Call claimed that a “rift” had developed among Republicans over Romney’s reaction. Strangely, the Capitol Hill newser didn’t offer much by way of proof that such a rift exists

Immediately after the attack in Cairo, Egypt, our embassy released an ill advised statement that essentially blamed America’s tradition of free speech for the violence. Mitt Romney immediately responded that this was a “disgraceful” statement for a U.S. embassy to make and criticized the Obama administration for it.

After all, America’s embassies operate under the control of the President of the United States and when an embassy speaks it is rightfully assumed that they are speaking with the President’s voice.

NBC Pushes Unproven Claims of ‘Anti-Muslim Incidents’ In USA

-By Warner Todd Huston

When “journalists” confront conservatives, typically every claim, statistic, or assertion is challenged, but when talking to kindred spirits, reporters allow any manner of claim to pass by unchallenged. Such is the case with NBC’s interview of spokesmen for CAIR who, without any proof, were allowed to claim that “a spike in hate” against Muslims was occurring in the U.S.A.

Jim Gold of NBC News spends the more than half of his recent report giving spokesmen for the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) all the room they needed to make the claim that after the Muslim rioters attacked American embassies in Egypt and Libya, they have seen more calls to their offices reporting hate crimes and discrimination against Muslims in the U.S.

Naturally, Mr. Gold never bothers to ask these Muslim activists for any proof of their claim. He just reports it straight as if it is simply a fact. If this were conservatives making such a statement, Gold would never allow the claim to be taken as Gospel truth without challenge like he did here. He would have had “experts” included in the story to rebut the conservative’s claims. But Gold did not seem interested in such “balance,” here.

Baltimore Sun, Pitying Man Who Passed AIDS to Teen

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Baltimore Sun published a story this month revealing sympathy for a man being prosecuted for having passed the AIDS virus to a 13-year-old Maryland boy. Not sympathy for having done this horrid deed, of course, but sympathy for, in the Sun’s opinion, his being “over charged” by state prosecutors for the separate crime of knowingly passing the virus to the child, a felony under state law.

The 36-year-old man, one Steven Douglas Podles, contacted the boy through a gay hook-up phone ap called “Grindr.” He blithely claimed that all users of the ap are “supposed” to be 18, so he assumed the boy was of age. Regardless the state has charged him with a series of sex crimes including a little-used law that criminalizes the passing of the AIDS virus to unaware victims.

33 states, including Maryland, have made transmission of the HIV virus a crime and some defendants have been charged with attempted murder based on such statutes.

The Sun’s piece is mostly an excoriation of the whole idea of making it a crime to purposefully pass the HIV virus to unsuspecting partners.

HuffPo Contributor: ‘Why Should I Care’ About Death of Ambassador Stevens

-By Warner Todd Huston

Huffington Post contributor Sharmine Narwani took the occasion of the murder of our ambassador to Libya to launch into an anti-American diatribe that culminated in her asking why she is supposed to care about Ambassador Chris Stevens’ death or that of the other two killed with him.

Sharmine Narwani, who is also a correspondent for Al Jezeera and an associate at St Antony’s College, Oxford University, took to her Twitter account on Wednesday after it was reported that Ambassador Stevens was murdered by a rioting Islamist crowd in Benghazi, Libya.

100s of 1,000s of Arabs & Muslims slaughtered by American troops. Tell me again why I should care about whatshisname-plus-three?

Almost immediately Twitter followers began to attack the HuffPo blogger for her callousness. But Narwani was unapologetic. At one point she asked a detractor why he questioned her “logic” just because it was different from his. “His life,” she said of the ambassador, “does not hold any more weight than another.”

NPR Fawns Over Interview Programmed by White House

-By Warner Todd Huston

Journalists used to pride themselves on their independence. They once thought that hard questions were their stock and trade especially when it came to hurling those questions at politicians. But even as they congratulate each other for their efforts — as NPR did recently — it appears that hard questions and independence is much lower on their list these days where it concerns President Obama. As it happens journalists are only asking those questions that are pre-approved by the White House.

On September 11, NPR’s Morning Edition gave a very warm welcome to Michael Lewis whose interviews of Barack Obama are soon to debut in the October issue of Vanity Fair. On NPR Lewis’ interviews were called “compelling narratives” and his every utterance was given breathless audience.

Lewis was presented as a quintessential journalist, exploring the life of the president of the United States with inside, unparalleled access. But not once did NPR note to its audience that Lewis submitted his story to the White House for its pre-approval before it went to Vanity Fair.

The Atlantic Criticizes Romney Over Libya, But Mitt Was Talking About Egypt

The Atlantic Wire accused Mitt Romney for a “less-than-factual” statement on Libya delivered in the hours after the attacks on our embassy. But in its rush to attack Mitt Romney, The Atlantic Wire got its countries mixed up as the statement it was condemning was Mitt’s statement on Egypt, not one on Libya.

For Half The Day, MSNBC Ignored U.S. Embassy Attacks in Cairo

-By Warner Todd Huston

Aside from the 11th anniversary of 9/11, there was no bigger story on Sept. 11, 2012 than the attack made upon the U.S. embassy in Cairo, Egypt. But for half the day on Tuesday, MSNBC didn’t mention the incident.

A careful review of MSNBC’s programming on Tuesday proved that up until 6PM eastern, MSNBC had still not bothered to report the storming of the U.S. embassy.

Late on the morning of Sept. 11, Muslim protesters angry, they claimed, over an American movie that portrays the Prophet Muhammad in an unsavory light, scaled the walls of the embassy in Cairo. The protesters removed the U.S. flag and replaced it with the black al Qaeda flag. Some five hours later, the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya was also attacked. One American was killed and the embassy was burned to the ground.

By 6PM eastern both CNN and Fox News had televised stories about the attacks while MSNBC remained quiet.

NBC Gave Dem’s Convention 25% More Coverage Than GOP’s

-By Warner Todd Huston

A new analysis of the airtime given to the national conventions of our two major political parties over the last several weeks reveals that NBC violated that oft repeated desire for “fairness” by giving the Democrat convention 25 percent more coverage than they did the Republican’s event.

The analysis showed that NBC dedicated 121 minutes to coverage of the Democrat convention, but only 97 minutes to the Republicans. The Today show gave 30 percent more coverage to the Democrats clocking in at 87 minutes for the DNC and 67 for the RNC. The Nightly News also gave a slight edge to the Dems by a four minute margin.

On the other hand, other networks did not perpetrate such disparity.

NBC Skips 9/11 Moment of Silence to Talk Breast Implants with Kardashian

-By Warner Todd Huston

This morning after 8AM Eastern most of the networks observed a moment of silence to commemorate the terror attacks that hit the Big Apple on Sept 11, 2001. But not NBC. No, NBC thought it would be much for fun to talk about boobs with a Kardashian.

ABC, CBS, Fox, MSNBC and CNN all took a moment out of their busy broadcast mornings to observe the moment of silence for those who fell that day.

But NBC skipped the moment of silence and aired an interview with “Momager” Kris Jenner, mother of the famous Kardashian clan. Famous for being Kardashians and for creating ex tapes, that is.

The NBC folks talked breast implants while everyone else was thinking of the victims of 9/11.

Media Blackout: GAO Says Obama’s Welfare Waivers Illegal

-By Warner Todd Huston

On Sept. 4, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) made a startling assertion saying that Obama circumvented the law when he summarily waived the work requirements in the welfare law. Perhaps not as shocking, to date, few news outlets seem interested in the story.

In its Sept. 4 letter, the GAO found that Health and Human Services (HHS) should have formally submitted a letter of its intent to make the changes to Congress and the Comptroller General before any waivers can be legally issued.

The letter also said that the GAO had not determined if HHS had the legal right to even make such waivers available. The GAO is basically saying that the Obama administration is breaking the law with its waivers.

Gawker’s Soft Peddling Pedophilia

-By Warner Todd Huston

Recently, Gawker.com, a left-leaning and sometimes profane general interest website, posted a story that makes excuses for child rape, calling it an “orientation” instead of a crime and stating that raping children is “a sexual relationship,” as opposed to the violation that it truly is.

The piece entitled, “Born This Way: Sympathy and Science for Those Who Want to Have Sex with Children,” written by Gawker editor Cord Jefferson, is quite an outrage for its excuse making and its explaining away of pedophilia as a mere “sexual orientation.”

Cord’s piece begins by introducing us to pedophile named “Terry” and we are told that when he was 20 — he’s now 38 — he “began a sexual relationship” with a seven-year-old girl. That a child can engage in a “sexual relationship” is a disgusting characterization but Gawker simply states it as so without protest.

Throughout the piece passive language like this soft peddles child rape. Constantly we are told that sex between adults and children as a “choice.” “Terry” even claims that the sex he had with his seven-year-old niece was consensual and Gawker simply takes his word for it without protest.

Then the piece goes on to reveal the “expert” testimony of a psychologist that claims that pedophilia is a “sexual orientation” just like homosexuality or even heterosexuality.

To Breitbart: Credit Where It’s Due?

-By Warner Todd Huston

In an otherwise interesting piece on the way conservatives set the agenda for media coverage of the Democrat convention and its removal of God and Jerusalem from the Party platform, Slate committed the all too common error of lazy attribution.

In a Sept. 7 piece, Slate noted how conservatives had basically set the agenda for the coverage of the Democrat convention all day on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 4 and 5. This was when it was realized that the Democrats had eliminated both God and Jerusalem being the rightful capital of Israel from their platform.

The Slate piece rightfully notes that Breitbart’s Jeff Dunetz was a source for breaking the news. But Slate gets the site wrong in its attribution. Slate notes that Jeff posted his story at his YidWithALid blog [sic] blog — which is certainly true even though it is actually called YidWithLid blog, no “A” — but neglects that Jeff gave the scoop to Breitbart’s Big Government first.

Mountains out of Molehills: The False Attack on Ryan’s Mountain Climbing

-By Warner Todd Huston

Democrats and their progressive cohorts are now trying to claim that Republican VP candidate Paul Ryan is lying about the number of times he’s hiked Colorado’s mountainsides. Naturally they are garbling the truth. Is there anything these left-wingers won’t try to make into an end-of-the-world outrage?

This faux outrage is, indeed, a “mountains out of molehills” moment, because the facts show this purported controversy is reaching to the heights of pure demagoguery.

These Obama surrogates are claiming that Paul Ryan lied when he said he climbed 40 of Colorado’s 54 mountain peaks that rise to over 14,0000 feet in height — peaks called “fourteeners.” This, they say, is nearly impossible because the amount of time and training that would be necessary to have tackled 40 of Colorado’s “fourteeners” would have left Rep. Ryan little time for Congress.

NBC’s Absurdly Rosy Jobs Reporting

-By Warner Todd Huston

Friday morning’s Today show on NBC did its best to paint the most rosy scenario possible on Obama’s latest dismal jobs report. Attempting to inoculate Obama from this economic downturn, host Matt Lauer said that analysts he had “been reading” claimed that the economy will add up to 12 million new jobs, “no matter who is president in the next four years.”

This has already been the worst economic recovery since The Great Depression, but on Friday Lauer and CNBC analyst Jim Cramer put the best face on it they could with Cramer chipping in that there is “pent-up demand” that is sure to break soon. This disastrous economic and jobs climate is “not such a bad moment,” Cramer claimed.

In fact, Lauer tried to massage the news into a “party atmosphere.”

Weather Channel Ignores Romney Visit to Isaac-Hit Gulf Coast

-By Warner Todd Huston

Now that Hurricane Isaac is in the history books, The Weather Channel, America’s top weather related website, posted a photo essay of the damage left by the storm. The photos depict flooding, destroyed homes, aggrieved residents and there’s also a photo of the visit by President Obama. But one thing there isn’t is any photo of GOP Presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s visit to the Gulf Coast.

The photo essay, titled Isaac Photos: Gulf Coast, does rip your heart out. Seeing all the devastation and seeing the poor homeowners whose lives have been so badly affected by storm Isaac is certainly filled with emotion.

This storm drew sympathy from the nation and the attention of first responders and news folk alike, but it also drew visits by both candidates vying for the White House… not that you’d know that from The Weather Channel’s coverage.

Actress Kyra Segdwick On Hollywood’s Mistake: Ignoring Midwest

-By Warner Todd Huston

Actress Kyra Sedgwick might be tempting fate in Hollywood with a recent interview on the Tavis Smiley show on PBS where she scolded her industry for ignoring the great middle of the country.

Sedgwick was on the show discussing her recently concluded series The Closer on TNT and noted that the show was a great hit in the Midwest, but not in L.A. or New York City. At first she said she felt insulted at this ratings truth, but it wasn’t long before she realized that this wasn’t a bad thing at all.

She told Smiley that she came to feel that Hollywood was making a mistake to ignore everything outside New York and Los Angeles.

“I think that there’s a … huge difference,” Sedgwick said, “between what people politically believe and what interests people in Los Angeles and what interests people in New York, and what they believe politically [in the rest of the country] … and I think to ignore that is really cutting yourself out of a huge part of your population that I feel… they’re under-represented, and I think that was the great thing about [The Closer series].”

Incognito? Reporters Using Fake Names to Buy Obama Merchandise

Looks like some members of the Old Media establishment have resorted to using false names in order to buy Obama campaign merchandise inside the friendly confines of the media-only areas of the Democrat National convention this week.

Hunter Walker reported about an Obama/Democrat Party souvenir stand that sat inside an area to which only convention goers with media credentials had access and when asked about her take for the night the stand’s minder revealed a startling subterfuge.

Before the amazing revelation, the souvenir seller asked Obeserver.com’s reporter if he wanted any Obama merch but he reminded her that buying campaign stuff amounts to a donation to the campaign and, well, he was a reporter and it just wouldn’t be kosher to do that.

Conventions a Hit on Social Media, Not TV

-By Warner Todd Huston

TV viewing of the GOP convention dropped sharply over its 2008 counterpart and there is little reason to expect that the Democrat convention will fare any better this year. But the Republican’s affair was a big hit on social media and that will likely be mirrored this week for the Democrats.

According to Nielson, TV ratings for the GOP convention tallied to about 30.3 million viewers this year. Compared to 2008’s convention ratings of 39 million viewers, that is a 23 percent drop in viewership.

But online, the GOP convention saw an uptick from the 2008 events. The Republican National Committee reported some 2.8 million viewers via its live streaming video on its Youtube page and, while viewing numbers aren’t known, there were many, many other outlets that offered a live stream of the convention.

Twitter, too, saw a deluge in communications of the event.

HuffPo Scolds Dems for ‘Caving’ On Reinsertion of God and Jerusalem Into Platform

-By Warner Todd Huston

It might appear odd, but Huffington Post seems to be scolding the Democrats for having “caved in” to pro-religion and pro-Israel forces in the Democrat Party for succeeding in having God and Jerusalem put back into the Democrat Party platform after they were removed earlier today.

Clearly proving that there is a great division in the Democrat Party over these two issues, Huffington Post’s headline screamed that the Democrats have become “The Pushover Party” now that God and Jerusalem have been reinserted into the party platform.

What is also clear is that Huffington Post is siding against God and Israel and saying that real Democrats don’t cave to Christians and Jews.

The day has not been good for the Democrat Party. After the Democrats were embarrassed all during the morning and afternoon of Sept. 5 over the unsettling deletions of God and Jerusalem from their platform, a voice vote was called on the floor of the convention to have God reinserted and also to have it reaffirmed that Jerusalem is the rightful capital of Israel.
