One Newspaper Owner is Betting on Print

-By Warner Todd Huston

The new owner of the Orange County Register is telling his new employees that he wants to hire “more of them.” He also intends to actually expand the paper whereas the rest of the industry seems to be contracting.

New owner Aaron Kushner told a gathering of his new employees that he is, “interested in beefing up the print edition and satisfying and adding to the nearly 163,000 subscribers who pay for the newspaper daily and the 287,000 on Sunday.”

How he intends to do this when most other papers are losing subscribers in droves he did not reveal.

Happiest Nations Also Have Freedom of the Press

-By Warner Todd Huston

A University of Missouri study has found that nations with the happiest citizens share something in common. They also have an established tradition of a free press.

Missouri University Journalism student Edson Tandoc, Jr. and co-author, Bruno Takahashi from Michigan State University, correlated data from 161 countries and applied that to the 2010 Gallup Poll measuring happiness around the world, Freedom House’s press freedom index, and other data and found that, “the more press freedom a country enjoyed, the higher the levels of life satisfaction, or happiness, of its citizens tended to be.”

“The road to happiness isn’t direct; it is a complex path or web that includes many different influences and interrelationships,” Tandoc said. “Things like improving the economy alone are insufficient for increasing happiness. Protecting press freedom is also an important component of the happiness web.”

The authors also found that countries with a higher level of press freedom had better quality of life quotients in many other areas, as well.

Once Again CNN Fans Flames of Racism in Election Coverage

-By Warner Todd Huston

We now know that the Old Media has arrived at a two-pronged attack on Mitt Romney in order to help Barack Obama win a second term. The first is repeating false claims that Romney is a tax evader — thereby playing on his wealth to agitate reg’lr folks — and the second is that old standby “racism.” This week CNN perpetrated the second trick claiming that Obama’s race is “reigniting” America’s racist whites to work against him and his fellow minorites.

During a segment of CNN’s Starting Point with Zoraida Sambolin, that old corpse of Jim Crow-like racism was once again raised like a zombie from the grave. Sambolin speculated that voter ID laws are “reigniting some of these old prejudices” because they are “an effort to suppress the minority vote.”
Host Zoraida Sambolin set the tone of racism for the segment right at the top by introducing the left’s wiled-eyed claims that voter ID laws are just an excuse to suppress minorities.

Sambolin: With America’s first black president up for re-election this November, the conversation about voting rights has been reignited. Thirty states are currently enforcing some form of voter ID law which many civil rights advocates say is an effort to suppress the minority vote.

Later she asked the panel, “Do you think that having an African American president is actually reigniting some of these old prejudices?”

Far Left Media Matters to Start Radio Show

-By Warner Todd Huston

Air America’s radio efforts failed miserably. Ay number of left-wing “answers” to Rush Limbaugh have gone down in flames faster than the Hindenberg. Despite all that left-wing radio carnage, the Soros-funded, extreme left-wing Internet site Media Matters for America is about to hit the airwaves with its second radio show.

Next week, Media Matters will launch a daily call-in show on SiriusXM to be called The Agenda, Powered by Media Matters. The host will be MM senior adviser Ari Rabin-Havt.

Media Matters has become the premier left-wing propaganda factory that often drives the Old Media’s political talking points.

ABC’s Brian Ross: Sikh-Killer is Right-Wing

-By Warner Todd Huston

ABC News is at it again, misidentifying a mass murder as part of the “right” in America today. And, naturally, it was Brian Ross who did the dirty deed claiming the man responsible for killing several Sikh temple goers in Wisconsin is a member of the “right-wing.”

Ross appeared on ABC on the morning of August 7 to say that shooter Wade Michael Page has “links to these right-wing, neo-Nazi groups.”

The left has succeeded for years linking conservatives and people on the American right to the Nazis by claiming they are all “right-wingers.” But the claim is simply untrue.

It should be remembered that Hitler’s Party was called the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei which in English means the National Socialist German Workers’ Party. Yes, that’s right, socialist.

Buzzfeed Furthers Myth of Obama’s Small Donor Dominance

-By Warner Todd Huston

Ben Smith of Buzzfeed recently wrote about campaign donations — both Romney’s and Obama’s — for this presidential election. In an otherwise fairly informative piece, Smith feeds into one of the myths about the 2008 election, the claim that Obama’s small donor base was bigger by far than that of any other candidate in history.

Smith begins his campaign finance piece with his first paragraph touting Obama’s “perfection” of “small-dollar politics.”

The 2008 election marked the perfection of small-dollar politics, as Barack Obama fueled roughly half of his campaign with the email-driven, impulse-based solicitation that had been pioneered by Howard Dean four years earlier and technically perfected by smaller campaigns and advocacy groups.

It has been said repeatedly that Obama’s 2008 election campaign brought in more small donors of $200 or less than any other candidate, however this is not true. In fact, even the George Soros-funded Campaign Finance Institute says that this claim that Obama had more small donors than any other candidate is false.

In 2008 the CFI found that Obama had just about the same small donor record as George W. Bush’s 2004 campaign. The study found that Bush’s total campaign donations broke down to 25% from small donors. Obama’s 2008 take was 26% small donors. No real statistical difference, there.

“The myth is that money from small donors dominated Barack Obama’s finances. The reality of Obama’s fundraising was impressive, but the reality does not match the myth,” said CFI’s executive director Michael Malbin.

NBC and Its Monkey Commercials and Edited Videos

-By Warner Todd Huston

NBC was forced to apologize as cries of racism were leveled against the network after airing an ad featuring a monkey seconds after African American Olympian Gabby Douglas won the gold for gymnastics. This is amusing seeing as how the same network selectively edited a recording in order to make Floridian George Zimmerman appear to be a racist.

NBC ended up in the middle of a “race storm” when it went to a commercial break during which an ad for the new sitcom Animal Practice featuring a monkey appeared on Olympics watcher’s screens.

Cries of racism immediately rang out as some assumed that the inopportune ad placement was some purposeful act of racism.

NBC was stunned by the accusations and rushed to apologize for any misconceptions and assured viewers that “no offense was intended” by the ad.

Old Media Mostly Negative on Romney Europe Trip, 100% Positive on Obama’s 2008 Trip

-By Warner Todd Huston

Now that Mitt Romney’s trip abroad has wound down an assessment of its coverage can be made and the final word is negativity. The Old Media was mostly negative about Romney’s trip. This is quite a contrast to the glowing coverage it gave to Obama’s pre-election trip abroad in 2008.

According to an analysis by the Media Research Center, the 21 newscasts of the big three networks between July 25 and July 31 showed that the coverage of Romney’s trip was 86% negative. Stories on his trip to Britain, Israel and Poland focused on so-called gaffes, and “political blunders” quite despite that Romney’s visits were well received by the peoples there, especially in Israel and Poland.

The networks and the rest of the Old Media news establishment heaped scorn on Romney but this was in stark contrast to the effusiveness that that was afforded Obama when he took a trip overseas in 2008 to burnish his foreign policy credentials ahead of his first election to the White House. Coverage in 2008 was nearly 100% positive, sycophantic even, despite the few and sundry gaffes he committed at the time all of which went practically ignored.

What’s Going Wrong at the Pacific Research Institute?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Early in July extreme left-wing Mother Jones magazine published a piece claiming that Sally Pipes, the head of the Pacific Research Institute, was not doing a very effective job of leading the San Francisco-based conservative, free-market think tank. Unfortunately, whether the magazine is left-wing or not and whether these questions make me comfortable or not (they don’t), there seems to be some truth in the story.

The magazine focused on the excessive amount of money that Pipes has requisitioned from the think tank to pay for Public Relations agencies to assist her in writing the many books, papers, articles and the like that carries Pipes’ name. Calling her “supernaturally prolific,” Mother Jones reported that Pipes employs Keybridge Communications to do the writing.

In fact, according to Mother Jones, Pipes has spent “nearly $1 million — $400,000 alone in 2010” on the services of Keybridge. This is a substantial amount of money considering that the institute has an annual budget of only $4 million. To have spent such a huge chunk on “research assistance” is quite a lot, indeed.

Pipes has a very high profile in conservative circles. She is a sought after speaker with a specialty in healthcare. She’s worked with such big name groups as the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation, and her work appears in newspapers, magazines, and websites everywhere — such as Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, and National Review. Pipes is also listed as the author of at least a half dozen books.

Politico: ‘Ten Things to Know’ About Ann Romney’s Horse?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Political news site Politico is not done needling Ann Romney for having a top-rated horse in the Olympics, apparently. Witness an actual Politico headline: 10 things to know about Rafalca.

Most of the “ten things” are just facts about the horse, Rafalca, but one of them was a political jab and a second was misleading.

The political jab was that purported funnyman Stephen Colbert made a satirical video about the horse. Ho hum.

The misleading one was in the first few words of point five. It says that Rafalca “has her own clothing line.” Politico goes on to report that owners of the horse have made up ball caps and t-shirts screen printed with the horse’s name for fans to buy over the Internet.

Wash Post Imagines Non-Existent ‘Questions About Gun Violence’ at Olympics

-By Warner Todd Huston

The headline of the Internet version of a Washington Post story about the shooting sports at the Olympics asserts that “even at the Olympics” the Olympians face questions about gun violence. Yet, upon reading the article, it is clear that the author of the piece is saying that none of the Olympic contestants have been confronted with such questions at all, at least not from anyone in the Olympics.

The headline of the piece reads, Even at the Olympics, Athletes in the Sport of Shooting Face Questions About Gun violence. But as you read it, what is clear is that only the media are pestering the Olympic Shooters with such questions. The contestants said no one actually in the Olympics, no fellow Olympians, have asked any such questions.

The print version carries a different headline that isn’t much better: Shooting: Athletes Battle for Titles — and to Dispel the Stigma of Gun Violence.

It was reported that the operation of The Daily was going to cost $500,000 a week and Murdoch one said that he needed to gain 500,000 new readers a week to break even.

CNN Cries Over Rebuke by Romney Aide in Poland

-By Warner Todd Huston

CNN wants us to feel sorry for it. More specifically CNN reporter Jim Acosta wants us to feel sorry for him. It was Acosta who said on a July 31 broadcast that the behavior of Romney’s aide in Poland was “really inexcusable” and “sort of unprovoked.”

In case you missed the furor of the Old Media, while visiting Poland’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Pilsudski Square, various members of the press following Romney on his overseas trip began to scream out questions at the candidate as he made to leave the memorial. This loud disrespect for the somber atmosphere of the memorial prompted Romney’s traveling press secretary, Rick Gorka, to interject, dressing down the media and even cursing at them.

As reporters from CNN, The New York Times, Politico, and the Washington Post screamed out questions, Gorka sternly asked them to “show some respect.”

Joy Behar Likens Al Gore’s Cable Network to Mythic G-Spot

-By Warner Todd Huston

Once again, TV host Joy Behar puts the twit in Twitter by comparing Al Gore’s Current TV Network to the mythical erogenous zone called the G-spot, a sensitive spot on women that no scientist has ever been able to actually find despite 60 years of trying.

In order to excite people into searching out her show on the little seen cable network, Behar took to her twitter account to sell the show saying, “So @current is like the g-spot of TV — it may be hard to find but once you find it, there’s nothing better.”

The fact that Behar compared Current TV to the G-spot is amusing but not likely in the way she thought. After all, thus far the G-spot is an imaginary erogenous zone, not one discoverable by science. So, Behar is essentially saying that her network is as much a mythical thing as the G-spot?

So, no matter how hard you look, you won’t be able to find Current TV and if you do, you’ll doubt it ever happened and you won’t be able to find anyone to confirm that it happened!

I’d say that’s pretty funny. Wouldn’t you?

Slamming Romney for ‘Lies’ in Advertising, CBS News States Its Opinion as Fact

-By Warner Todd Huston

In a piece on “lies” in campaign advertising, on the July 30 episode, CBS Evening News correspondent Nancy Cordes gave Mitt Romney a slap for “taking the President out of context” in his ad about Obama’s July 13 “you didn’t build that” screed. What “proof” did CBS present that Romney lied? Nothing really. Cordes simply stated her opinion and presented it as fact.

The piece started off well enough pointing out that an Obama ad simply lies outright about Romney’s position on exemptions for abortions. The Obama ad claims that Romney would back an abortion law that would ban abortions even for women who were victims of rape and incest and even if the woman’s life were in danger.

CBS News points out that truth detector site Politifact rates this a “pants on fire” claim noting that Romney has repeatedly said that he agrees with exemptions and would not back a 100% ban on abortions in all cases.

Media Falsely Reports Man Used 3-D Printer to ‘Print’ His own ‘Assault Rifle’?

-By Warner Todd Huston

A few days ago the Interwebs went all a twitter over a guy that reporters claimed “printed” his own “fully functional assault rifle” using a 3-D printer that “prints” in plastic. But few of these reports came anywhere near getting the facts straight on this story. The fact is he “printed” only a small part of the gun. He did not “print” a “fully functional rifle” as many reports suggested.

There was “printing” going on, certainly. But the only part of the gun — an AR-15 — that was fabricated using the 3-D printer was a part that did not have to withstand the explosions of the cartridge going off, nor was it a part that hasn’t been made of plastic in other guns already. The chamber was not fabricated, the barrel was not fabricated, the bolt wasn’t, and the firing pin wasn’t. In fact, none of the most important working parts were created using the 3-D printer.

So, what was “printed” by the machine? Only the lower receiver. If you don’t know what that is, think of it as the seat or skeleton upon which all the working parts of the gun sit. It is also the part to which the stock and handle are attached. So the only part this guy created was the lower receiver to which he affixed the rest of a real AR-15’s parts.

NYTimes Looks for ‘Golden Lining’… in Genocide?

-By Warner Todd Huston

By some accounts, since the coming to power of Zimbabwe’s terror-inducing Robert Mugabe, up to 480,000 people have lost their lives. Of those not killed outright or starved to death, tens of thousands of people had their property stolen and their livelihoods ended, they were beaten, raped, and left for dead. As these outrages were occurring the nation’s economy was devastated, a one-time economic bright spot in Africa reduced to ruins. And in all this violation of human rights the New York Times sees a “golden lining”?

How could there be a “golden lining” in all this murder — even genocide — and destruction? Well, apparently out of the ashes of a country, the genocide of hundreds of thousands, and the human rights violations of millions more, the fact that a few thousand small farmers have risen up to some modest success raising tobacco is somehow a great success.

In a Friday, July 20 piece, Lydia Polgreen is all excited over this year’s tobacco crop haul of 330 million pounds of the golden leaf (hence the “golden” lining).

Of course, this is down from the 522 million pounds that was realized in the year 2000, but it’s better than nothing, one supposes.

Polgreen goes on to laud all the progress that this handful of black small farmers have had this year and that success, she and other Mugabe apologists think, might signal that Mugabe’s genocidal “land reforms” might be a howling success. But even her own announcement of success is prefaced by the horrors.

Head-To-Head: FBN’s Dobbs Beats CNBC’s Kudlow

-By Warner Todd Huston

At the end of June I noted the ratings success that Fox Business Network had over CNBC and that only Larry Kudlow was still beating FBN in the ratings. Now, for the first time, Kudlow lost the ratings battle, at least for one month.

For the month of July, Lous Dobbs Tonight hit the big time.

NEW YORK, Jul 30, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) — FOX Business Network’s (FBN) Lou Dobbs Tonight beat CNBC’s The Kudlow Report in the coveted advertising demo of persons aged 25-54 for the month of July, according to Nielsen Media Research. The victory marks the first monthly win for the 7 PM/ET program, anchored by Lou Dobbs, since launching in March 2011.

For the month of July, Dobbs achieved a 10 percent advantage over CNBC with 43,000 viewers in the demo to Larry Kudlow’s 39,000. In total viewers, it was a close race with Dobbs earning 148,000, just shy of Kudlow’s 158,000. FBN is available in roughly half as many homes as CNBC and this is the first time a program has won the month in the advertiser friendly demo since launching in 2007.

FOX Business Network (FBN) is a financial news channel delivering real-time information across all platforms that impact both Main Street and Wall Street. Headquartered in New York–the business capital of the world–FBN launched in October 2007 under the leadership of FOX News Chairman & CEO Roger Ailes and is now available in more than 60 million homes in major markets across the United States. Owned by News Corp, the network has bureaus in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, DC and London. On the web at http://www.foxbusiness.com.

It is a milestone for Fox Business Network, for sure. Larry Kudlow is a great talent, for sure, but this news shows that Fox Business Network is a force to be reckoned with, for sure.

C.S. Monitor Wonders if Every Romney Campaign Ad is ‘Racist’

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Christian Science Monitor apparently thought it was doing the country a public service by laying out rules by which to judge whether or not a Mitt Romney ad is “racist,” but in its five questions to ask yourself about Mitt Romney’s ads, the magazine essentially laid out criteria that makes any ad Romney has done or even could do into a racist attack on Barack Obama.

In fact, the C.S. Monitor begins with the premise that racism must naturally be a prime Romney tactic against Obama. The campaign will be racist, the authors in the Monitor say. “It’s not a matter of whether racism will appear in campaign messaging, but when,” they write.

What the authors then do is indulge that famous left-wing practice of saying that everything whites do — this time in politics — is either outright racism, purposeful yet veiled racism, or subconscious racism. In other words, everything is racism no matter what.

For the Monitor, professors Charlton McIlwain and Stephen M. Caliendo also insist that blacks are never racist in their campaign efforts, another lefty trope popular in the world of academia.

Even TIME Says Mayors Emanuel and Menino Wronging Chick-Fil-A

-By Warner Todd Huston

It’s a “First Amendment buzzsaw,” that the mayors of Chicago and Boston have walked into over misuse of their powers in denying Chick-Fil-A the right to open and operate their fast food stores in the two cities. This is from TIME, yet. And if even TIME realizes that the Democrats are misusing their powers, well, let’s just say it’s a major violation of Chick-Fil-A’s free speech plain and simple.

For TIME, Michael Scherer goes over the whole series of events that led up to the two mayors — Rahm Emanuel of Chicago and Thomas Menino of Boston — imagining they have the power to deny Chick-Fil-A a right to operate merely because committed Christians run the company. Scherer’s analysis is that this mistaken belief in their powers puts the mayors in “tricky legal waters.”

ABC News Chief: Our Colorado Coverage Was Great… Except for That Brian Ross Business

-By Warner Todd Huston

ABC News President Ben Sherwood held a conference call of staffers on July 24 and told them that he felt his network’s coverage of the shooting at a Colorado theater was topnotch work, well, except for that whole smearing of the Tea Party indulged by ABC News chief investigative reporter Brian Ross, that is.

Only hours after the shooting occurred, Brian Ross took to an ABC news broadcast to announce that he’d found a man with a similar name as the shooter’s on a Colorado Tea Party site thereby illicitly linking this innocent man and the Tea Party to the mass murderer. Calls for Ross to be fired over his lack of journalistic ethics have been heating up the Internet and talk radio airwaves ever since giving ABC a black eye.

But this week, on a daily morning editorial conference call participated in by top staffers across the country, Sherwood praised his team on its coverage of the shooting in Colorado. Even so he was forced to admit that the unproven allegations made by Ross that the murderer *might* be a member of a Colorado Tea Party group hurt the network’s credibility.

MSNBC’s Toure: Colorado Shooting All About Racism

-By Warner Todd Huston

Proving that racism can be found literally anywhere by an enterprising MSNBC talking head, the single-monikered Toure of The Cycle quixotically told the show’s panel that he thought that racism lies at the root of the response to the theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado.

During a discussion on the political atmosphere after the Aurora shooting, Toure said he had “hoped” that the whole incident would provoke a “Trayvon Martin situation,” but that in the end it all boiled down to what he felt was the common racist attitude of making sure that “law abiding white people have access to guns” while “black criminals” don’t.

How Toure got from a white shooter with no past run-ins with either law enforcement or mental health professionals who shot up a mostly white audience to the idea that all people care about afterward is keeping African Americans from observing their Second Amendment rights is anybody’s guess.

Here is what he said in the July 23 show:

Media Loves Romney Brit ‘Gaffes,’ Forgets All About Obama’s

-By Warner Todd Huston

All day Wednesday the Old Media establishment was going gaga over the “gaffes” that presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney supposedly committed on his overseas tour. But all the many gaffes Obama committed with our allies — especially the Brits — were conveniently absent from any of the coverage.

The list of jabs at Romney grew by the hour throughout the day. From assumptions that Romney forgot the name of Labour Party leader Ed Miliband, to his spilling of the beans about a meeting with British Intelligence (usually these meetings are kept hush-hush) to a back and forth of jabs about the Olympics opening this week in London, both the British and American press were quick to give Romney the back of a hand.

Of course, few Old Media outlets noted that Obama, too, has had his troubles, especially with the Brits.

Here is a list of just a few of those Obama gaffes that were left out of the picture during Thursday’s coverage.

Fox Business Network Flies the Skies Covering the Midwest Drought

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Midwest has been suffering a major drought this year, one that will surely cost us all in higher food prices over the coming years. Fox Business Network has been literally flying the friendly skies — in a helicopter — to cover it.

FBN’s intrepid reporter of the skies, Jeff Flock, has been touring the Midwest reviewing the effects of the drought and covering the devastation it’ll wreck on the country.

Flock has literally been flying around in a helicopter covering the drought. Yesterday I got some updates on Flock’s journey right from the whirley-rider himself.

Over the past month our team has reported live from corn fields already lost to the drought, irrigated fields with corn plants over your head, a grain elevator that expanded to hold what was expected to be a record harvest, and a dairy farm using fans and spraying cows with water to keep their herds cool. I’ve also been to the corn and bean pits at the CME where traders have bid up both commodities to record levels. And I’ve also reported from a chopper 1200 feet in the air over the drought-baked Midwest landscape.

Each of our stops has brought a texture to what is a complicated and compelling story that has yet to fully unfold.

Over the fields in Sugar Grove, Illinois

Take Thursday’s chopper trip over the farm town of Sugar Grove, Illinois. The country singer Jason Aldean has a song called “Flyover States” which is about the Midwest and how people on the coasts only know the likes of Indiana, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois from flying over but never stopping in them. Just like in the song, we found that just flying over gives a skewed picture of the drought.
