How Hollywood Maligns The Right

-By Warner Todd Huston

We all know of the great slights that Hollywood deals out to the American right. We see them all the time. From the TV shows that casts Republicans as villains, the movies that make Christians out to be hypocrites or even outright evil. Traditional motherhood and fatherhood also find constant ridicule at the hands of Hollywood. The overt examples are everywhere, of course. But the grand swipe isn’t all that Hollywood indulges. There are also these ubiquitous, small, quick, too fast to notice swipes against the right perpetrated by Hollywood. A fine example of the side-swipe approach to denigrating the right came in the April 29 episode of The Mentalist, a CBS detective show starring Australian actor Simon Baker.

Now, at the top here I want to say that The Mentalist is generally an inoffensive, amusing little show fashioned in the Sherlock Holmes mode featuring a detective that sees every little clue and can with ease assemble these disparate facts to solve the crime. Baker turns in a funny performance with just enough underlying darkness to make his character interesting.

But, despite that it is generally a diverting entertainment, the show is just as disposed to slam anything from the right as any other and the April 29 episode gives us a prime example of that.

Whoopi Says Without Abortion Parents Just Kill Kids Later

-By Warner Todd Huston

I think Whoopi Goldberg has as much hair inside her head as she has outside it. What else explains the harebrained thinking she exhibited (again) on her coffee klatcher’s show The View on May 4?

Goldberg attempted to explain why she supports abortion. It’s because, you see, if parents can’t kill their kids in utero she thinks parents will just kill their kids later on in their lives.

The discussion centered around a new law in Oklahoma that required abortion patients to view their in vitro babies via a new 3-D ultrasound before they make the final decision to undergo the abortion procedure.

Goldberg was against the new law and in her muddled thinking this was her reason to oppose it:

Seth MacFarlane: Historical Illiterate (Hollywood Lies About Arizona Law)

-By Warner Todd Huston

“Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane proves once again that while the denizens of Hollywood might be good at acting, or singing, or TV and movie making, they most certainly have no clue about history or contemporary politics. They are utterly illiterate about the world around them because of the insular bubble in which they live. In a recent interview reported by Reuters, the insufferable MacFarlane proves himself to be el stupido on the recent Arizona illegal immigrant law.

Now, one isn’t necessarily illiterate to oppose the new law essentially forced upon Arizona due to the utter failure of the federal government to properly deal with the illegal immigration problem, a problem that we’ve suffered under in this country since at least the 1980s. Certainly, there are substantive reasons to be both for and against the new law. Unfortunately for MacFarlane, “substance” isn’t in him.

The first quote that Reuters reports from MacFarlane is this bit of historical illiteracy…

Leftist Media Maligns GOP Video as ‘Terrorism’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Riddle me this, Batman: When is a checkmark like a “V”? When the Old, left-wing media establishment wants to make you into a terrorist instead of a voter, that’s when!

That’s what happened when the Republican Governors Association made a video to stir the voters to “Remember in November” and get to the polls and vote against the Obama regime. (See original video HERE)

As soon as the video came out the leftists tried to spin it as an allusion to the domestic terrorist Guy Fawkes, a radical that tried to blow up Parliament in 1605 England. And where the visual motif that the RGA used in the video was a voter’s checkmark, the Old Media tried to spin it as a “V” as in “V for Vendetta,” an allusion to the anti-establishment comic book/movie based loosely on a Guy Fawkes-esque plot to destroy a future England turned fascist.

The RGA wants voters, not terrorists. But the Old Media can’t help itself from telling lies.

Well, the RGA had fun responding to the critics of its earlier video…

MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer Wishes That Times Square Bomber Was a Tea Partier

-By Warner Todd Huston

This morning MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer appeared on the Stephanie Miller radio show, a small syndicated left-wing talker, and during her appearance she expressed her “frustration” that the Times Square bomber was a Pakistani terrorist instead of a white person. Apparently Brewer had hoped that a new Tim McVeigh perhaps coming from the Tea Party movement would turn out to be responsible for the attempted bombing in New York instead of just another boring ol’ radical Islamist terrorist.

Brewer told the lefty radio host, “there was part of me that was hoping this was not going to be anybody with ties to any kind of Islamic country,” and intimated that the fact that since it was an Islamic terrorist evil white America would just use that as another excuse to be racists. “I mean they use it as justification for really outdated bigotry,” Brewer said.

So according to Brewer, I guess we should excuse all acts of terror because, after all, it’s those evil, racist, white bigots in America that force them to blow people up?

Tenn. Newspaper: Being Pro- US Constitution and Anti-Obamacare is Raaaaacist

-By Warner Todd Huston

Did you know that if you cared about the U.S. Constitution you are a racist? Oh, and did you also know that being against big government and being against Obamacare also makes you a racist? Well if you didn’t know that the Nashville Tennessean wants you to realize that if you love the Constitution but hate intrusive, overarching Obamacare… well, you, sir, are a big fat racist. The paper also resurrects the lawmaker-spate-upon lie and lays the blame for all this on the Tea Partiers.

That’s right, for the Gannet-owned Tennessean reporter Nate Rau wants you to know that loving the U.S. Constitution is an evil thing to do and if you don’t accept Obamacare like a fish after a baited hook, then you hate black people, too.

Rau starts his slanted piece off claiming that the current states’ rights debate “raises” the “specter of slavery and segregation.” Of course, it does nothing of the kind except for those looking to use that issue to push their race-baiting schemes. There isn’t a single contemporary states’ rights advocate that has brought slavery and segregation into the argument. Nowhere have states’ rights advocates said that relying on the original American principle of local control is an avenue for somehow bringing back slavery! In fact, it is slanderous and patently stupid to say it does. But this is the sort of race baiting that the 30-some-year-old reporter Nate Rau is trying to enflame. I’d say he is the one raising “specters” not the states’ righters.

Tea Party: Instantly Attacked by Old Media, Coffee Party: Immediate Respect from Old Media

-By Warner Todd Huston

Nothing says “media bias” like coffee in the morning.

If anyone ever wanted to see an example of the bias of the Old Media no better example can be found than the different ways that it has treated the tea party movement and the coffee party astroturf effort. The tea party movement was initially ignored, then it was ridiculed, then it was attacked as dangerous, but no where in the Old Media was it treated as a valid, powerful political movement despite the literally millions of Americans that have attended them.

On the other hand, the astroturf coffee party effort created by an Obama campaign staffer was treated as a viable, important effort from the second it was announced and all that quite despite the fact that no coffee party event seems to have been able to turn out more than 20 people at a time.

Let’s look at some numbers. Just from those first tax day tea party events (April 15, 2009) the number of participants topped *500,000. And since then there have been thousands of more tea party protests of all sorts sponsored by any number of local and national groups and they, too, have turned out thousands of participants. There have been tea party participants in the millions since April of 2009.

Of course, the Old Media has done its best to downplay the number of tea party protestors. Instead of detailing the actual numbers, the Old Media continues to use the nebulous phrase “hundreds of protestors,” or when the numbers are greater the dismissive “thousands of protestors.” An excellent example of this can be seen in the great Washington D.C. protest of September of 2009. Where the foreign press noted that as many as a million flooded Washington D.C. on September 12, 2009, the American Old Media insisted on using the less accurate phrase “tens of thousands.” When asked to quantify a million people no one would use the phrase “tens of thousands,” unless, of course, they were trying to diminish the amount.

Also since April of 2009, we have seen tea party groups begin a foray into local politics. From coast to coast tea party groups have been holding candidate forums, endorsing candidates, and proffering candidates from their own ranks. Now, as it is right now this moment, we are still at a nascent stage of these electoral efforts, so it is difficult to say what will come of it. But the fact is, they’ve begun at various levels from north to south and east to west.

Media Spinning Against New AZ Law for All It’s Worth

-By Warner Todd Huston

The media has been trying its hardest to spin this Arizona immigration law to its agenda for all its worth. It’s such a swarm of media agenda journalism that even liberal reporters that write about the travel industry are trying to demonize Arizona over it all. We can see this in the facile reporting by USA Today’s travel reporter, Barbara De Lollis. Hers titled, “Arizona immigration law backlash? Traveler says state ‘is off my travel list for sure,'” is a screamer for the wild assumptions and unproved and unprovable assertions made in order to further the Old Media agenda.

De Lollis asserts that there is a “backlash” among travelers over the Arizona legislature’s decision to strengthen its immigration laws. She thinks that the tourist industry in the Grand Canyon State will find itself on the losing end of the stick because of “the USA’s toughest immigration law.”

That is quite a claim, isn’t it? One would think that she’d have reams of evidence to prove her contention that Arizona’s tourist industry will be hurt by the immigration law, wouldn’t you? Maybe she has some major travel industry spokesmen or organizations saying Arizona is out? Perhaps she has a few large corporations or government agencies announcing travel bans? Maybe she has some survey from a respected group like Gallup, or some such polling group?

No, none of that.

So what does De Lollis use to prove her case?

Robocop Director: Robocop Was an ‘American Jesus’ Because he Kills People

-By Warner Todd Huston

Andrew Breitbart appeared at an awards ceremony in Chicago on Friday the 16th and one of his remarks was that Hollywood is “40 years into the left injecting bad into America.” To counter the bad, Breitbart urged us all to remind each other what is good in our great nation. As an illustration of Breitbart’s warning I give you Paul Verhoeven, the director of the 1987 film Robocop.

Verhoeven recently spoke to MTVs Josh Horowitz about the underlying symbolism of Robocop and his main conception was that the Robocop character was an “American Jesus” because his method of righting wrongs was to shoot and kill all evil doers. Robocop was judge, jury and executioner all in one and that apparently makes him an “American Jesus.”

It was Verhoeven’s contention that America is little else but a violent nation that has no interest in peace, law, and order, or diplomacy but is the quintessentially violent cowboy, self-interested, and mostly a lawless place.

In his own words, Verhoeven told MTV the following:

Andy Stern: Union Chief Fleeing Ahead of Illinois Indictment?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Until recently, Andy Stern was the President of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), a union that has served as one of President Obama’s biggest donors as well as filling the ranks of his ground troops. In a surprise move, Stern resigned his post this month and no one is really sure why at this point.

Andy Stern has been one of the closest union chiefs to a president in history. Along with SEIU treasurer Anna Burger, he was one of the most frequent visitors to the White House. He was even chosen by President Obama to serve on his Deficit Reduction Commission — a sort of contradiction in terms that.

Upon his resignation, it has been learned that Andy Stern’s leadership of the SEIU has not brought financial solvency. As F. Vincent Vernuccio reports in the Washington Times, Stern has left the SEIU in pretty shabby shape.

Does Obama Want to Destroy America? Yes, But…

-By Warner Todd Huston

Rush Limbaugh and a few other radio hosts have made it a center piece of the attack against President Obama, the Tea Partiers have often put such sentiment on their protest signs, and the conservative chattering classes have been abuzz with the question: does Barack Obama want to destroy the United States?

The only real answer is “yes, but…” Yes he does, but only if it’s your ox being gored. Yes he does but there is more to it than that. And if it’s someone else’s veritable Oxen the answer might still be “yes, but…”

Conservative radio host Michael Medved, for one, emphatically denies that Obama wants to “destroy the country.” Medved employs the conventional logic that a politician that wants to be re-elected would not want to destroy the very nation that he has been elected to lead. That would make sense if only Obama were a conventional politician and if only Obama himself hadn’t told ABC News, “I’d rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president.” That very sentence straight from this president’s own mouth seems to shoot full of holes Medved’s conventional logic.

Still, in a way, Medved has stumbled upon a certain amount of truth no matter how small. The problem is that what we really have here is a misunderstanding of concepts. The fact is, following his straight down the line, left-wing, anti-American, radical ideology, Obama does want to destroy the U.S.A. as it is now. But in his mind he is not trying to destroy America simply because he wants utter destruction and devastation to be the only outcome. You see, mere destruction isn’t his end goal as those on the right fear. In his left-wing ideology, he thinks after America’s fall he and his left-wing comrades will be building a new and better U.S.A. Where real Americans see destruction and the end of everything, the leftists see a re-birth to a better and, in their eyes, more moral America. He and his left-wing friends see the U.S. as a Phoenix rising from the ashes of the bad old days.

Those Delusional ‘Coffee Party’ Lefties

-By Warner Todd Huston

The self-delusional world in which liberals wallow truly is amazing. It takes an Olympic gymnast’s level of agility to warp your logic enough to think like one of them and a recent report on the left-wing blather site Newsvine is yet one more example of the backbreaking contortions that liberals must indulge to make themselves feel better.

In this post on the presumed falling numbers of the tea party protests and an amusing subsequent praise of the coffee party effort, this left-winger calling himself “MoeZilla” desperately tried to massage the truth in order to make his losing left appear as if they are holding their own in the American political debate. The truth is, of course, that our pal Moe warped reality in multiple ways in order to make it seem as if his side is winning — or at least is treading water — while the tea party is losing.

He began his “report” saying that organizers for a tea party protest in Stockton, California were “hoping for 1,000 people to join the protest,” but only about 250 showed up (according to ABC News 10). MoeZilla segues on to reveal that the tea party event in Sacramento “was only around 2,000.” Moe estimates that the April 15 protest was an 80% drop from last year’s tea party protest.

Why Can’t Old Media Get History Right Part 2: Boston Herald Muffs Rev War

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last week I posted a deconstruction of the muffed WWII history as penned by NPR commentator Cokie Roberts. Today I have another example of muddled history in the Old Media. This one is misconstrued Revolutionary War history as published by the Boston Herald. Hard to believe that the Boston Herald, a paper that sits in the cradle of the Revolutionary War, can get Revolutionary War history wrong but such is the degraded state of the Old Media.

In Lexington, Massachusetts on April 19, 2010, reenactors of the Rev War celebrated the 235th anniversary of the Battle of Lexington. The Boston Herald reported on the event later that morning and made a mash of its allusions to history.

Re-enactors took to Lexington Green today to recreate the opening moments of the Revolutionary War in front of a crowd of thousands, who gathered for the early-morning ritual.

…The battle that produced the “shot heard ’round the world” was the result of a confrontation between Lexington militia men and British “red coats” on Lexington Green, which escalated into a daylong fight involving 3,500 militia men and 1,500 red coats.

Notice that the Herald called the battle at Lexington between Patriot militiamen and the British Red Coats as the one that, “produced the ‘shot heard ’round the world.'” As any first year history student knows, however, the battle that is identified as the one that produced the “shot heard ’round the world” was the Battle at Concord, not the Battle of Lexington.

The phrase comes from the famous poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson who wrote the lines for the 1836 unveiling of the Obelisk erected in Concord, Massachusetts commemorating the Battle of Lexington and Concord.

Ignorance On The Left

-By Thomas E. Brewton

Liberal-progressives, almost universally, misuse the terms Nazi and Nazism.

Liberal-progressives reflexively use the term Nazi to denigrate anyone or any point of view they dislike. Doing so is the equivalent of civil rights activists seeking to damn Ku Klux Klan members by calling them Abolitionists.

The name Nazi, apparently unknown to liberal-progressives, is a contraction of the full party name, National Socialist German Workers Party. Nazism, in short, is simply one of several varieties of socialism, the ideological faith of liberal-progressives.

Why this misuse of the words Nazi and Nazism?

Cokie Roberts: Japanese Internment Was an Immigration Issue?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Why is it that lefties always get history wrong? The Jewish World Review recently published an editorial by NPR commentator Cokie Roberts and her hubby meant to urge the country toward “comprehensive” immigration reform by praising America’s history of immigrant labor. But even as much of what the two Roberts say is dead on, there are still a few glaring errors one of which is their claim that Japanese internment during WWII was an immigration issue.

Cokie, whose full name is a mouthful — Mary Martha Corinne Morrison Claiborne Boggs — garbled history at the tail of her piece by saying that the internment of Japanese during WWII was little but “anti-immigrant sentiment.”

American history has been scarred by outbursts of anti-immigrant sentiment… In the 1940s, we interned Japanese-Americans living on the West Coast.

But this is an absurd statement to make. Japanese Americans were not interned into holding camps during WWII merely because they were immigrants, it was because their distant fellow Japanese relatives were at war with us. In fact, Franklin Roosevelt also interned Germans and Italians in similar camps, though in lesser numbers, because he was worried that they might be enemies within. This was no “anti-immigrant sentiment,” it was war. Right or wrong, it was war.

Gosh Darn it… The Assoc. Press is all Mad at Me (Update on NJ School Cross-Dressing Day)

-By Warner Todd Huston

I hate it when the Old Media gets all mad at me, and stuff. But, here is the vaunted AP scolding me for “skewering” a grade school over the story of the canceled cross-dressing day that was to be held at the Maude Wilkins School in New Jersey.

On the morning of April 12 I came across a story posted on my FaceBook page by an incensed mother of a grade school boy from the Maude Wilkins grade school. She was upset that her school had planned an event for women’s history month wherein students would come to school dressed as a famous woman from history, or dressed in representative historical women’s fashion from American history… yes, they even expected the boys to dress as women.

Later that day I wrote my treatment of the event and off to the races we went. As it happened it wasn’t long before the pressure that the school felt over the ridiculous cross-dressing day caused Principal Beth F. Norica to cancel the event.

Maureen Dowd: A Degraded State of Intelligent Discourse

-By Warner Todd Huston

I don’t write about Maureen Dowd simply because she rarely offers anything worthy of serious, intellectual discussion. I don’t claim any sort of high intellect for myself, of course, and don’t necessarily claim to be able to thoroughly judge the work of the deepest of thinkers but Dowd’s work is like the old saying about pornography in as much as when it comes to stupid prattle I know it when I see it.

Breaking my own no-Mo-Dowd rule, though, her April 10 column must be singled out as a prime example of just how silly, inconsequential, and, well, stupid Mo Dowd really is. In it she equated Radical, oppressive, dangerous Islam to today’s Catholic Church as if they were entirely equivalent in their treatment of women. It is astonishing that she thinks that radical Islam and the modern Catholic Church is indistinguishable in the way they treat women, but there you have it, she apparently really does.

Dowd started her April 10 column relating a recent encounter she had in Saudi Arabia with a “group of educated and sophisticated young professional women.” Dowd asked her hosts how they could stand living in that oppressive Saudi culture and she wondered how such “spirited women, smart and successful on every other level, acquiesce in their own subordination?”

Obama’s Back Alley Healthcare

-By Warner Todd Huston

For decades abortion supporters argued that restrictions on abortion would cause women to die in unsafe “back alley abortions” all across the land. This scare tactic was a mantra that seemed to work quite well to spread abortions throughout the states and helped spur the Supreme Court to penumbra its way to a pseudo Constitutional “right” for abortions. But the main thrust of the tactic was ostensibly warning about unsafe medical procedures, a situation that they wanted to change. Flash forward to 2010 and we see President Barack Obama and his Democrats about to send not just abortions, but our entire medial system into a veritable “back alley” situation with a shortage of doctors, rationing, denials of service, and outrageously high insurance premiums.

And now we can add a new twist to the dangerous situation that Obama is forcing on patients in the U.S. The Associated Press reports that 28 states are already seeing a shortage of primary care physicians, a dearth of doctors that will only get worse with Obamacare, and these states are looking toward expanding the medical responsibilities of nurses to cover the shortage.

So, what we see here is a situation where less qualified practitioners will see their roles expanding in the era of Obamacare! Healthcare practitioners with less training and experience are being given more responsibilities in our healthcare system even as Obama claimed that his goal was to improve our nation’s healthcare.

Demonizing the Tea Party the Chicago Way

-By Frank Salvato

“So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss. If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose. If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.” – Sun Tzu, 6th Century, BC.

One way to tell how effective the Tea Party movement has been is to gauge the severity of the attacks on the movement by its detractors. It is fair and logical to deduce that the more severe the attacks, the more threatened the attackers feel. Judging from the most recent attacks on the Tea Party movement – and because the Progressives and Liberal Democrats are completely invested in “feelings” instead of facts – those opposed to limited government and the constitutional rule of law are feeling quite threatened.

Anyone paying attention to the mainstream news media has noticed a recent uptick in the number of news stories about the Tea Party movement. While media outlets such as FOX News, The Washington Times, BigGovernment.com, NewsMax.com and talk radio portray the Tea Party movement in a favorable light, the “alphabet media,” its cable brethren and the Progressive blogs are painting the movement as having emanated from the fringe; a group consisting of a bevy of Timothy McVeigh’s on steroids. Truth be told, this isn’t because they are grossly ideological in their reporting – although that lends to the zealousness of their actions – as much as it is a coordinated tactic to neuter the power of the Tea Party movement. The Progressive’s attacks on the Tea Party movement are straight from Rules for Radicals; they are a textbook Saul Alinsky play…and they are only going to get more vicious as the 2010 and 2012 elections approach.

News Fast

-By Nancy Salvato

Sometimes, reading the news can be so frustrating and frightening that it can affect my mood. In his book Eight Weeks to Optimal Health, Dr. Andrew Weil suggests taking a news fast one day a week.

“I don’t want you to become uninformed about the state of the world, but I note that paying attention to news commonly results in anxiety, rage, and other emotional states that probably impede the healing system.”

I don’t have any problem with Dr. Weil’s suggestion. Vacations are important for health and happiness. News about VATs, a nuclear Iran, or Hamid Karzai aligning with the Taliban, does raise my blood pressure. And I often have headaches and stomachaches that are directly related to stress. I can understand the correlation. However, I do have a problem with people who automatically dismiss a news source or item because it is associated with one or the other side of the aisle.

Washington Post Ombudsman Misses Point

-By Warner Todd Huston

Today, in his guise as the Washington Post’s ombudsman, Andrew Alexander posted a discussion about the recent misreporting by the Old Media about the various “incidents” that supposedly occurred between the admittedly raucous tea party protesters and members of Congress in Washington, D.C., during the healthcare fight. But while Alexander finally makes some admissions on how the Old Media dropped the ball on these exaggerated reports, he still missed the point of the whole mess.

Alexander starts his report off with an interesting rhetorical style. He writes about incidents as if they actually happened even as he admits later down the page that either they didn’t or might not have. He recounts the supposed incidents in affirmative language instead of using qualifiers. “The Post and other news organizations had reported a series of incidents so ugly,” Alexander says, “they were denounced by congressional leaders of both parties.” Notice how he didn’t use qualifiers like “alleged incidents”? No, he said “reported on incidents” as if they were actual incidents that have been proven. If someone were to stop reading after the first few paragraphs they’d go away thinking those “incidents” were confirmed and true.

Union Chief Claims He Witnessed ‘Racism’ At Tea Party…Yeah, Riiiiight

-By Warner Todd Huston

Not long ago Andrew Breitbart issued a challenge to the anti-tea party left to show proof that the “N” word was thrown at black members of Congress by Tea Party protesters in their walk to Congress just prior to their passage on Obamacare. In fact, Breitbart has offered $100,000 for video or audio proof of any racism during that incident. No one on the left has been able meet the challenge.

On the April 7, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka was giving a speech at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and in the audience was one Andrew Breitbart. During the question and answer phase of Trumka’s appearance, Breitbart asked the Union Chief about the supposed racism of the Tea Party movement and asked if he, Trumka, would denoucne the violence that union thugs perpetrated against Tea Party folks at the event in Searchlight, Nevada.

In answer to Breitbart’s charges of union thuggery, Trumka claimed that he was a witness to the “N” word being cast toward black members of Congress during the Democrat’s solidarity walk previous to their vote on Obamacare. “I watched them spit at people, I watched them call John Lewis the n-word,” he said. “I witnessed it. I saw it in person. That’s real evidence.”

Obama’s Increased Use of Death From the Skies, Where’s the Anti-War Left?

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Washington Think Tank New America Foundation has been reporting on drone strikes in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq for quite some time and its tally of kills by U.S. drones reveals an interesting thing. It shows that drone kills under President Obama are far and away higher than those under Bush.

Reliable numbers of those killed by U.S. drones are obviously hard to come by. Strikes are deep in unfriendly territory and subject to obfuscation by both a U.S. government that isn’t too keen on reporting kills as well as its enemies that try to downplay the strikes in order to discredit their effectiveness. Because of this the NAF reports a range between which the truth may lie.

For instance, in these first few months of 2010 NAF reports that so far between 141 and 240 people have been killed by U.S. predator drones. This includes “collateral damage” as well as the deaths of actual terrorists.

La Amistad: How the AP Commonly Muffs American History

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Associated Press has a famous book on grammar and style that its news writers use to govern their work, a book that is also popular with the whole American news industry. It has served as a standard for many years. The AP, however, seems to have no style or rule for reporting history. Or rather, perhaps it does and the rule is to purposefully garble American history, always skewing it. The APs recent report on a re-creation of the famous 19th century, two-masted schooner La Amistad, famous for its connection to America’s slave trade history, is a case in point.

As it happens a replica of the famous ship was built to highlight history of the slave trade as part of UNESCO’s Slave Route Project, “to remind the world of the consequences of slavery and to promote cultural exchanges.” The problem with APs coverage, though, is that it does not mention the facts about La Amistad leaving the impression that the ship was an American slave trader. In truth it was not an American slaver, though. On top of that the AP seems to think the ship was “made famous in a Stephen Spielberg movie” instead of made famous by the trial that resulted in its seizure by U.S. authorities in 1839.
