Roll Call Claims a ‘Republican Split’ Over Romney Embassy Comments, Offers no Examples

-By Warner Todd Huston

Along with the rest of the Old Media establishment, Washington D.C.-based newspaper Roll Call also attacked Mitt Romney for having dared to criticize the Obama administration for its failures in the Middle East after the attacks on our embassies in Egypt and Libya. To push the anti-Romney narrative, Roll Call claimed that a “rift” had developed among Republicans over Romney’s reaction. Strangely, the Capitol Hill newser didn’t offer much by way of proof that such a rift exists

Immediately after the attack in Cairo, Egypt, our embassy released an ill advised statement that essentially blamed America’s tradition of free speech for the violence. Mitt Romney immediately responded that this was a “disgraceful” statement for a U.S. embassy to make and criticized the Obama administration for it.

After all, America’s embassies operate under the control of the President of the United States and when an embassy speaks it is rightfully assumed that they are speaking with the President’s voice.

Obama Refuses to Submit New Regulations Plan Required By Law

-By Warner Todd Huston

Early every spring an administration is required by law to submit its regulatory plans for the year. Obama, however, has refused to submit this report perhaps afraid of how badly it might impact his prospects for re-election.

The spring 2012 Regulatory Agenda is supposed to be submitted so that both Congress and the nation can get a handle on the regulatory changes the president intends to make. It is a requirement imposed by the Regulatory Flexibility Act as well as Clinton era Executive Order 12,866 — an order that President Obama reaffirmed last year.

This report is supposed to be submitted to Congress between October and April. Obama still hasn’t satisfied this lawful requirement.

Ohio GOP Senator Rob Portman has sent a letter to the White House scolding it for this dereliction of its reporting duties.

NBC Gave Dem’s Convention 25% More Coverage Than GOP’s

-By Warner Todd Huston

A new analysis of the airtime given to the national conventions of our two major political parties over the last several weeks reveals that NBC violated that oft repeated desire for “fairness” by giving the Democrat convention 25 percent more coverage than they did the Republican’s event.

The analysis showed that NBC dedicated 121 minutes to coverage of the Democrat convention, but only 97 minutes to the Republicans. The Today show gave 30 percent more coverage to the Democrats clocking in at 87 minutes for the DNC and 67 for the RNC. The Nightly News also gave a slight edge to the Dems by a four minute margin.

On the other hand, other networks did not perpetrate such disparity.

Bellar for Ill. Senate: Obamacare Summed Up in One Sentence

Perfect…

So, let me get this straight. This is a long sentence. We’re going to be gifted with a healthcare plan that we’re forced to purchase and fined if we don’t, which purportedly covers at least 10 million more people without adding a single doctor but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn’t understand it, passed by a Congress that didn’t read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President who smokes — [laughter] — same sentence! — with funding administered by a Treasury chief who didn’t pay his taxes, for which we will be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government that has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a Surgeon General who is obese — [laughter] — and finally, financed by a country that’s broke.

Dr. Barbara Bellar Candidate for Illinois State Senate, District 18 sums up Obamacare in one sentence. Please go to my website and contribute to my campaign. I am running against the Chicago Machine and I could use your financial help! Go to electbellar.com or send your checks to Citizens to Elect Barbara Bellar – PO Box 557766, Chicago, IL 60655.

Conventions a Hit on Social Media, Not TV

-By Warner Todd Huston

TV viewing of the GOP convention dropped sharply over its 2008 counterpart and there is little reason to expect that the Democrat convention will fare any better this year. But the Republican’s affair was a big hit on social media and that will likely be mirrored this week for the Democrats.

According to Nielson, TV ratings for the GOP convention tallied to about 30.3 million viewers this year. Compared to 2008’s convention ratings of 39 million viewers, that is a 23 percent drop in viewership.

But online, the GOP convention saw an uptick from the 2008 events. The Republican National Committee reported some 2.8 million viewers via its live streaming video on its Youtube page and, while viewing numbers aren’t known, there were many, many other outlets that offered a live stream of the convention.

Twitter, too, saw a deluge in communications of the event.

Just as Bad: Proof of Ill. GOP Consorting With Union Thugs

-By Warner Todd Huston

Trevor Loudon attended last week’s GOP convention and discovered the sad evidence that the Illinois Republican Party is just as bad as Democrats in its desire to consort with extremist, left-wing Marxists and union thugs — not to mention fill their pockets with that dirty money.

At the GOP convention, Loudon found a crumpled invitation to one of the many soirees that political delegates attend while at conventions, this one specifically for the Illinois Delegation.

But this invite wasn’t just for a normal, GOP-styled party. No, THIS invite was for one sponsored by enemies to the taxpayer, enemies to the U.S. Constitution, enemies to democracy, enemies even to the very Republican Party to which these delegates belong. This party was sponsored by Illinois’ public employee unions, the very groups destroying this nation in general and Illinois most particularly.

As Loudon notes, “How can the Illinois State GOP justify taking money from Marxist controlled labor unions?”

How indeed?

Well, the answer is obvious. The Illinois GOP is but a junior partner to the Democrat Party in the task to destroy the Land of Lincoln. They are out to fill their pockets with taxpayer’s dollars passed through the dirty hands of Illinois’ greedy public employee unions.

Illinois Republicans are equally as guilty as the Democrats.

It is truly disgusting.

An Example of Assumed Racism, But Was it?

-By Warner Todd Huston

During Wednesday’s Republican convention an incident occurred that was immediately portrayed as an example of Republican “racism.” It was on the lips of every newscaster, in every paper, and on every cable TV show. But was it really an example of racism? There is much room for doubt.

The incident happened to a CNN camerawoman, who happened to be black. Peanuts were thrown at her by some convention goers. These same guys then yelled something to the effect of, “that’s how w treat the animals.”

The two men were not delegates and were not officials of any kind but were simply attendees up in the cheap seats.

This incident was immediately portrayed as racism. An obvious case of racist white men throwing peanuts to the black woman as if she were a monkey.

But was it? There are no reports at all from the two who were thrown out. We have no statements from them as to their intentions and they didn’t yell anything else as far as anyone knows to make their point any clearer.

The Atlantic Says GOP Leader Hopes Minorities Don’t Vote, But He Didn’t Say That at All

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Atlantic illicitly portrayed GOP House Speaker John Bohner as saying that he “said out loud he hopes blacks and Latinos ‘won’t show up’ this election,” but a look at what Boehener actually said proves that The Atlantic is purposefully misleading its readers.

In its headline, The Atlantic Wire story for August 27 screams, “Boehner Says Out Loud He Hopes Blacks and Latinos ‘Won’t Show Up’ This Election.”

If John Boehner really did say that he hoped that blacks and Hispanics wouldn’t vote this election that would be quite an incendiary thing to say, for sure. It would rightly bring condemnation down on the Speaker’s head. And The Atlantic is saying flat out that this is what Boehner said.

It wasn’t just the headline, either. Even in its lead paragraph The Atlantic characterized Boehner’s comments as wishing minorities won’t vote. (My bold)

CNN’s ‘A Team’ Rather Do Hurricane Coverage Than RNC Convention

-By Warner Todd Huston

Something interesting to note about the front half of this week’s coverage of the news over at CNN is that the network’s A team reporters — Soledad O’Brien and Anderson Cooper — have for the most part eschewed the GOP convention preferring to stand in the winds of hurricane Isaac rather than be faced with covering Republicans.

For most reporters, when they are told they are doing storm coverage, it consists of standing in the rain and winds to yell into a mic about the wrath of Mother Nature. And it’s usually considered an unwelcome assignment, too.

Think about on-site weather coverage by your local TV news station and you’ll recall that the correspondents that are standing in the wind and rain are never the A team news anchors. As the A team is always sung as a bug back at the studio, usually it’s some low ranking reporter or reporterette — the ones always doing the 100 birthday stories or the lost dog stories — that are sent out to stand in the harsh weather.

But not CNN. No, this week two of CNN’s top talents were the ones standing in the churned surf and 100-mile-per-hour winds to report about hurricane Isaac, a job usually given to reporters on the lowest rung.

Letter to the RNC – Todd Akin Controversy

-By Chuck Busch

It is true that Todd Akin’s medical knowledge is mostly wrong about a women’s body “shutting down” in a rape situation. And Todd Akin’s reference to “legitimate” rape was truly an unfortunate choice of words. He might have been suggesting that there are variable circumstances distinguishing a “rape,” including forcible rape (“legitimate” as Rep. Akin described it), statutory rape (consensual) between an adult and a minor, and possibly those occasional uncertain cases when rape is claimed. But this is also lame by inferring that pregnancies resulting from a rape are extremely rare as though trying to mitigate the thorny problem of whether abortion is justified in such cases.

Lessons learned: 1.) Do your homework and verify your scientific facts before opening your mouth; 2.) Rehearse your lines and know your position before you do interviews;’ 3.) Be principled in your beliefs. Say what you mean and mean what you say. If you believe life begins at conception and is sacred, how often a rape situation occurs is irrelevant. A life is still a life no matter how it is conceived. 4.) Distinguish between your personal views and party platforms or current legal standard or proposed legislation. As I understand it, neither the Republican or Democrat platforms are specific about rape cases.

Nonetheless, the Republican Party is wrong to try to ostracize Rep. Akin for his misstatements regarding rape and abortion. Certainly, it is ridiculous for anyone to presume from even Rep. Todd Akin’s terrible wording, that he minimizes rape or is insensitive toward its victims, as some have declared. The Democrats appear desperate to build a whole campaign on just this one incident.

Ad Wars: Obama’s ‘Republican’ Woman, Registered as Dem. for Last 6 Years

But, as it turns out, one of the women in the ad is not so “Republican” as she’s presented, having been a registered Democrat for the last 6 years — several years longer than Obama has been president.

Still Shot of Fake Obama Republican, Maria Ciano of Colorado

CNN’s Important GOP Convention News: Strippers Readying for Convention

-By Warner Todd Huston

CNN has a habit of getting to the real meat of a story, finding all the most important angles, and its coverage of the GOP convention is no exception. CNN has a reputation to burnish by finding only the most important convention stories and with its latest story about how an important sector of Tampa is readying for the convention, it appears the cable channel really is at its hard hitting best. What important sector is under the CNN microscope? Tampa’s strip clubs, naturally.

Of all the important stories that CNN could pick to investigate, strip clubs is where the venerable “news” leader goes?

CNN’s opening paragraph really goes for the salacious right off the bat, too.

Go-Go and Ezili are dancing cheek to cheek on a Friday night. That is to say they’re spinning, glute to glute, on a polished chrome pole at a strip club.

Really? Dancing “glute to glute”?

Did someone let the TMZ or National Enquirer editors into the CNN newsroom?

Paul Ryan: Most Talked About Pol on Facebook

-By Warner Todd Huston

CNN reported this week that Rep. Paul Ryan has become the king of Facebook by knocking President Obama off “the most talked about” list of US politicians.

CNN recently entered into a partnership with Facebook to track things political on the social sharing network and according to the new “Facebook-CNN Election Talk Meter,” in the 54 hours after presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney introduced Rep. Paul Ryan as his choice for the vice presidency, Paul Ryan became the star of social media.

Facebook-CNN talk meter scores

  1. Rep. Paul Ryan 5.21
  2. President Barack Obama 4.84
  3. Vice President Joe Biden 4.01
  4. Gov. Mitt Romney 3.74

In fact, Ryan became such a hot topic on social media that he almost matched Olympic swimming star Michael Phelps on the Talk Meter and that is pretty impressive considering how badly politics typically shows up on Internet “top” lists compared to pop culture and sports. As CNN measured it, in the days after he won all his most recent Olympic medals Phelps rated a 6.51 to Ryan’s 5.21 on the 1-10 scale.

Barack Obama: Hey Media, Stop Reporting What The Other Side Says!

-By Warner Todd Huston

According to The New York Times, President Obama is a “voracious consumer of news.” But he’s not at all happy with a media that has been apparently engaged this whole time in a one-sided love affair with The One. He has harsh words for the media establishment.

Times writer Amy Chozick herself seemed quite star struck by the prez giving us paragraph after paragraph filled with evidence of how impressed she is with Obama’s reading habits and media interaction. But for the President, the feeling isn’t mutual.

You see he’s mad that the press keeps giving the other side so much coverage.

While Mr. Obama frequently criticizes the heated speech of cable news, he sees what he views as deeper problems in news outlets that strive for objectivity. In private meetings with columnists, he has talked about the concept of “false balance” — that reporters should not give equal weight to both sides of an argument when one side is factually incorrect. He frequently cites the coverage of health care and the stimulus package as examples, according to aides familiar with the meetings.

See? The Me-Myself-and-I President says that the press should just stop giving that “factually incorrect” side all that darn coverage. Only he is the right one, so that is all the press needs to report. There is no “other side” to an issue. Just Obama’s.

Lefty Attack: Paul Ryan is a Follower of Ayn Rand

-By Warner Todd Huston

It was only minutes after news broke that Paul Ryan was Romney’s likely pick for Vice President that leftwingers on Twitter began to needle Ryan as a follower of that mean ol’ Ayn Rand, the famed objectivist philosopher of the middle of last century most famous for writing Atlas Shrugged and for being a proponent of what the left says is a less than compassionate philosophy on humanity.

There is a mistaken belief on the left that Paul Ryan was somehow programmed by Ayn Rand and that his entire budget plan, his Roadmap For America’s Future, is somehow one great Randian, or worse Darwinian, exercise in the survival of the strongest. The left also chides him for later turning his back on Rand and pretending his ideas really aren’t driven by what they consider to be Ayn Rand’s mean-spirited philosophy.

Neither claim is true.

Paul Ryan Has Already Been an Effective Obama Critic

-By Warner Todd Huston

One of the things that a vice presidential candidate has to be able to do and do well is be an attack dog for the ticket. The best VP candidates have both the credibility and the capability to severely criticize the other team. Even before being picked as his running mate by Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan had proven that he is that man.

Ryan has been the President’s sore spot since the budget and Obamacare debates began early in Obama’s stint in the White House and making him a veep pick for the Republicans is sure to cause no end of heartburn to a president that clearly doesn’t grasp the economic destruction that his own policies have wrought.

Months ago Rep. Ryan had already gotten under Obama’s skin. If you’ll recall in April of 2011 President Obama went out of his way to invite the Republican to a special speech on the budget and then, quite ungraciously slammed him in the speech — without having the decency to either address him or look him in the eye.

Imagine the ignorance of this and how it lowered the office of the President. To have arranged a speech, invited an political opponent, and then dissed him in public like that is the sort of low action of a petty man, not the high actions of a President. And for a President to attack a mere House member at that!

It is patently obvious that President Obama is unnerved by Paul Ryan. And it’s no wonder. You might also recall how Ryan wholly eviscerated Obama’s poor attempt at a budget back in Fed. of 2010.

Buzzfeed Using Anonymous Source to Slam Paul Ryan as a ‘Sarah Palin’ Pick

-By Warner Todd Huston

Plainly the long knives are out among the left-media already. All media hands have been called to rush out to cut Rep. Paul Ryan to pieces before he sets one foot on the campaign trail. For Buzzfeed they’ve stooped to using unnamed “sources” to attack Ryan, calling him “no Sarah Palin.” But it’s a strawman argument pushing the left’s narrative.

This Buzzfeed smear job is clearly an effort to both try and influence conservatives that love Palin to turn against Paul Ryan by invoking Palin’s name and to push the false narrative that Ryan’s pick is a “controversial” pick, one meant to shore up Romney’s “flailing campaign.” Buzzfeed is attempting to turn conservatives both against each other and against Paul Ryan.

For Buzzfeed, McKay Coppins writes that Romney’s pick is somehow “just like” McCain’s pick of Sarah Palin.

CNN’s Crowley: Romney/Ryan is a ‘Ticket Death Wish’

-By Warner Todd Huston

The leftwing, Old Media has chosen its mode of attack on Paul Ryan: he wants to kill your grandmother. To further that, on CNNs Saturday morning election coverage, Candy Crowley announced that people are “afraid” that presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney’s pick of Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan is a “ticket death wish.”

Crowley seems to think that the addition of Paul Ryan to the ticket will force a debate on entitlement and budget reform that the GOP is “afraid of” and naturally her interpretation of that debate is predicated on the claim that Republicans want to destroy Social Security and other safety net programs. Ergo, Republicans want to kill people.

We’ve already had this debate. All they have to do at Obama Reelect is open up the files because this debate has already happened. They just bring it back, it goes, it is, you know, what they talk about. But I think the other thing that’s worth pointing out is not every Republican has signed on to this kind of, I mean, they will publicly. But there is some trepidation that this might be, looks a little bit like some sort of ticket death wish. That, oh, my gosh, do we really want to talk about these thing? Is this where we want to go when the economy is so bad? We could have stayed on that.

The corpulent Crowley is merely pushing the White House lie that anyone that opposes Obama wants to kill people. She is part and parcel to the lowest campaign in modern history as bad or worse than Lyndon B. Johnson’s campaign ads that claimed his Republican opponent wanted to destroy the world with nuclear war.

Top Five Reasons For and Against Chris Christie for Vice President

-By Warner Todd Huston

Over the last week or so the buzz surrounding the idea that Mitt Romney is seriously considering New Jersey Governor Chris Christie as his pick for vice president has been building steadily. Christie has become a rock star of sorts among Republicans, conservative and country-clubber alike. But does he make a good candidate for VP? To answer that, here are five pros and five cons on Chris Christie as Romney’s VP.

The conventional wisdom of picking a vice presidential candidate is predicated first on the principle of “do no harm.” The chosen candidate should not hurt the top of the ticket but still be a credible stand-in if the unthinkable happens. This has been violated many times. Does anyone remember Curtis “Bombs Away” LeMay?

The VP candidate should also compliment the ticket bringing things the big guy doesn’t have. He should be able to hit the road as the main candidate’s chief advocate, and even be an attack dog able to smash the other side over the head at every appearance.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has some great attributes in this vein, for sure.

Christ Christie for VP? Heck, Yeah!

1). Executive Experience: Christie was a national favorite right away when he became New Jersey’s governor in the GOP tidal wave of 2010 and as soon as he took office he hit the ground running. Some may say that he’s not been governor long enough to be able to claim experience, but he’s done more as governor in these two short years than any half dozen other governors have done in whole terms worth of time. Plus he was a prosecutor before that so he has a lot of hard experience to rely on.

CNN Cries Over Rebuke by Romney Aide in Poland

-By Warner Todd Huston

CNN wants us to feel sorry for it. More specifically CNN reporter Jim Acosta wants us to feel sorry for him. It was Acosta who said on a July 31 broadcast that the behavior of Romney’s aide in Poland was “really inexcusable” and “sort of unprovoked.”

In case you missed the furor of the Old Media, while visiting Poland’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Pilsudski Square, various members of the press following Romney on his overseas trip began to scream out questions at the candidate as he made to leave the memorial. This loud disrespect for the somber atmosphere of the memorial prompted Romney’s traveling press secretary, Rick Gorka, to interject, dressing down the media and even cursing at them.

As reporters from CNN, The New York Times, Politico, and the Washington Post screamed out questions, Gorka sternly asked them to “show some respect.”

Slamming Romney for ‘Lies’ in Advertising, CBS News States Its Opinion as Fact

-By Warner Todd Huston

In a piece on “lies” in campaign advertising, on the July 30 episode, CBS Evening News correspondent Nancy Cordes gave Mitt Romney a slap for “taking the President out of context” in his ad about Obama’s July 13 “you didn’t build that” screed. What “proof” did CBS present that Romney lied? Nothing really. Cordes simply stated her opinion and presented it as fact.

The piece started off well enough pointing out that an Obama ad simply lies outright about Romney’s position on exemptions for abortions. The Obama ad claims that Romney would back an abortion law that would ban abortions even for women who were victims of rape and incest and even if the woman’s life were in danger.

CBS News points out that truth detector site Politifact rates this a “pants on fire” claim noting that Romney has repeatedly said that he agrees with exemptions and would not back a 100% ban on abortions in all cases.

Up is Down: Media Ignores Romney’s Successes in Overseas Trip

-By Warner Todd Huston

What was the most striking thing about Mitt Romney’s overseas trip this week? Says Powerline, the most striking thing is the “hypercritical” coverage given the trip by the American press. In what could only be seen by an unbiased person as a success, Romney’s trip has instead been reported as a gaffe-filled mess.

Romney’s non-controversy comments about the Olympics aside, the worst part of the coverage was all the attention the Old Media lavished on the absurd claim from a member of the Palestinian Authority that Romney was a “racist” for his comments about Israeli culture in comparison to Palestinian.

In a very well received speech to fundraisers in Jerusalem, Romney noted that there is a “dramatic, stark difference in economic vitality” between Israel and the Palestinian held areas.

Milton Friedman’s Legacy of Fighting for School Choice for All

-By Amy Payne, Heritage Foundation

On the late Milton Friedman’s 100th birthday today, his words are truer than ever: “There is no respect in which inhabitants of a low-income neighborhood are so disadvantaged as in the kind of schooling they can get for their children.”

And the news from many parts of the country is disheartening. Despite a new school choice option for students in Louisiana, a teachers union there has threatened to sue private schools that accept voucher students this fall. Unions have fought school choice initiatives because they see options for students eroding their power structure.

The Administration is also fighting students’ best interest. Instead of promoting what works—school choice, empowering parents and students—President Obama just issued an executive order last week creating a new federal bureaucracy to single out African-American students for more government meddling in their education. The order states that:

substantial obstacles to equal educational opportunity still remain in America’s educational system. African Americans lack equal access to highly effective teachers and principals, safe schools, and challenging college-preparatory classes, and they disproportionately experience school discipline and referrals to special education.

The new White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans is supposed to “help expand educational opportunities, improve educational outcomes, and deliver a complete and competitive education for all African Americans.”

NY Daily News: Second Amendment Supporters Guilty of Murder in Colorado

-By Warner Todd Huston

In a July 21 column by the editorial board of the New York Daily News, there is fault assigned for the massacre in a Colorado theater. The fault is not just assigned to killer James Holmes, but absurdly to Obama, Romney, the NRA and every American that wants to protect the Constitution of the United States. That’s not too much hyperbole, is it?

This extreme, even silly, piece can be considered no less than a screed, an attack on nearly everyone but the man who pulled the trigger on that horrible night. The blame is cast so broadly as to seem idiotic, making the whole editorial something to dismiss instead of something to ponder.

To the editorial board of the NY Daily News, not only is Obama “standing at Holme’s side” as he “sprayed bullets and buckshot into a crowded movie theater” but so was Mitt Romney, the NRA and its President, and every American “zealot” for the Second Amendment.

“In a vain claim of innocence,” the NY Daily News accuses, “the fanatics will say Holmes is a monster and a maniac, that he fired and fired and fired as a man possessed. Each protestation clamps their fingers with his around the trigger.”

Any American interested in the Constitution and the Second Amendment is a gripped by “conscienceless extremism” that dismisses mass killings as if they are but a “fatal highway pileup,” the editorial cries.

Solyndra Republicans, Why the GOP Cannot be Trusted

-By Warner Todd Huston

On Friday, July 20, Politico reported that GOP leadership in the House beat back an attempt by recalcitrant members of their own caucus to continue to quietly support the sort of pork spending that gave us Solyndra in the first place.

House GOP leadership has been beating the Democrats up for the pure wasteful spending that was Democrat support for the now bankrupted “green energy” company Solyndra. But a few Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee wanted to buck the anti-bailout theme and quietly keep the spending program that allowed the “loans” to Solyndra to continue.

According to Politico:

At least three House Energy and Commerce Committee Republicans had publicly expressed reservations about the GOP-backed “No More Solyndras Act” during the past week. They griped, to varying degrees, about a provision that would effectively end the loan guarantee program — and argued that it needs to be reformed, not killed.

As Politico noted, the Wall Street Journal also lambasted these Republicans calling them the “Solyndra Wing” of the GOP and chiding them for loving corporate welfare.

The three Republicans hoping to re-open the corporate welfare spigot are Joe Barton (Texas), Michael Burgess (Texas), and Phil Gingrey (Georgia).

So, as we can see here, there is a large and powerful block of the GOP that is fully in support of the sort of disgusting, un-American waste, and pork barrel spending that results in such programs as the “loan guarantees” that sent millions of U.S. tax dollars into the black hole that is Solyndra — a company that will never pay back the so-called loans afforded it by Democrats wishing to help Obama campaign contributors.
