Feminist Magazine Cosmopolitan to Push Obamacare on Readers

-By Warner Todd Huston

Barack Obama has been reaching out to all sorts of non-government partners in a renewed effort to push his Obamacare law. The President’s latest Obamacare-pushing partner will be the famed women’s magazine Cosmopolitan.

In its fall issues, Cosmo will begin to publish multiple feature articles extolling the virtues of Obamacare, will inform readers on how to sign up and will celebrate the many benefits they might realize by accepting the all-encompassing law.

The magazine’s editor-in-chief, Joanna Coles, says that she feels her role as Obamacare flack is pivotal. “This stuff is really important. It’s life-changing for a lot of people.”

Lifesitenews.com also reports that the Cosmo website and social media sites will also be infused with Obamacare propaganda.

WashPost’s Sargent: IRS Scandal is ‘Fever Swamp’ Stuff

-By Warner Todd Huston

Greg Sargent of The Washington Post has decided that any worries over the IRS intimidation tactics that have gotten the county so riled up is nothing but “fever swamp” nonsense.

In his June 21 post at The Plum Line, Sargent has declared the IRS scandal over. In fact, it is nothing but Republican foolishness.

Despite the very fact that the IRS has admitted that it had, indeed, targeted Obama’s critics unfairly in a purely political action, despite disclaimers of coordination even though the heads of the IRS have visited the White House hundreds of times, and despite the reports from whistleblowers that the intimidation tactics and polices came from Washington, Sargent has declared it all a myth. Move along. Nothing to see here.

Teachers Unions Do NOT Care About Kids

-By Warner Todd Huston

Teacher’s unions are antithetical to a good education for our children and a teacher in Andover, Massachusetts is yet another horrendous example of how teachers unions are interested only in unionism and not education.

A teacher from Andover High School was fired from her teaching job in September of 2012 because of an email she sent during a union action. The email proved that the children were absolutely unimportant to this “teacher.”

The email was sent three weeks before a teacher’s contract was ratified and was sent to other teachers and union members. In the email, teacher Jennifer Meagher thought she had an excellent idea on how to hurry along the contract talks.

She told her fellow unionistas that harming the school is, “the only leverage we have left at the bargaining table. We can assure the (School Committee) and (McGrath) that reports will be passed and (reaccreditation) will continue if there is a contract signed this summer that maintains a 5-class load at AHS.”

What does that mean? It means that this “teacher” would rather hurt the school in order to get her union wants, that she’d rather see the school discredited and the kid’s education made less just so her unionistas would be happy. She was holding the kid’s education hostage for more money. Period.

Poll: Words Like ‘Incompetent’ and ‘Liar’ Most Used to Describe Obama

-By Warner Todd Huston

Pew Polling firm has found an interesting change in the way President Obama is being described with the use of words like “incompetent” and “liar” on the rise.

The latest Pew poll finds that one-word impressions of Obama are turning negative more often than they have in the past. Until now, Pew says, these wholly negative one-word impressions were “rare.”

The survey finds that the one-word impressions people have of Obama have changed a great deal throughout his presidency. Terms like incompetent and liar now are among the most frequently used words to describe Obama. In April 2009, when his job approval was at 63%, these words were rare.

Pew also found that the word “socialist” is used in nearly the same proportion as it has been used since he first took office, showing that the President has not succeeded in knocking down the perception that he is a socialist.

The President is also viewed negatively on civil liberties.

Report: Top IRS Aides Visited White House 300 Times

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last month many were questioning why Internal Revenue Service chief Douglas Shulman had visited the White House so often. Now, despite claims that there was no coordination between the White House and the IRS, a new report indicates that Shulman’s top aide visited the President’s residence perhaps as often as 300 times.

In May after news broke that the IRS had intimidated conservative and Tea Party groups trying to obtain an official tax status, reporters began to look into the activities of IRS chief Douglas Shulman. It wasn’t long before news emerged that Shulman appears on the White House visitor logs nearly 200 times.

This high number of visits occurred despite that the fact that both Shulman and President Obama claimed to have no knowledge of the IRS intimidation tactics. Both also said there was no coordination between the IRS and the White House.

Officials at the IRS and President Obama still maintain that there was no coordination between the White House and the IRS, of course, but this latest revelation makes that still harder to believe.

U.S. News Lumps LaRouchie in With Tea Partiers at IRS Rally

-By Warner Todd Huston

Lyndon LaRouche and his followers have never been welcomed into the Tea Party movement but his followers shadow nearly every Washington-based protest that occurs, whether left, center, or right. But in its coverage of Wednesday’s D.C.-based IRS rallies, U.S. News featured a follower of LaRouche as if he were a legitimate part of the Tea Party protest.

In its report on the Tea Party rallies, U.S. News noted that the protests “soon became about a lot more than the IRS” as speakers and protest signs began speaking to a list of complaints. But the first person U.S. News went to for a quote was one Mike Reeves, a follower of Lyndon LaRouche.

“Auditing the IRS is not enough,” protester Mike Reeves, a self-proclaimed follower of controversial political activist Lyndon LaRouche, told Whispers while holding an “Impeach Obama” sign. “The president has got to be removed like [President] Nixon was.”

But, U.S. News failed to inform readers that LaRouche followers have never been part of the Tea Party movement and lending a LaRouchie this platform is misleading. Any quote of a LaRouchie is simply not representative of conservatives, Republicans or the Tea Party movement.

Politico Uses Glenn Beck Against GOP On IRS Protest

-By Warner Todd Huston

For Politico, the news about the hundreds of Tea Party protestors in Washington DC on Wednesday, June 19, wasn’t so much about why the protesters were upset, but how it affected the “bipartisan approach” to the House IRS probe. And Politico seemed to blame Glenn Beck for the strain.

Politico reported that hundreds of Tea Party supporters took to the U.S. Capitol lawn Wednesday to protest the IRS in a rally sponsored by conservative activist and radio host Glenn Beck, but the Internet newser quickly turned its attention away from the protests and to the House Ways and Means Committee’s IRS probe.

Politico reported that Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.) was one of those invited by Beck to address the protest and this, they worried, would “upend the bipartisan approach” to the IRS probe.

White House: Obama’s $100 Million Africa Trip is ‘Great Bang for our Buck’

-By Warner Todd Huston

After questions arose over the $100 million price tag of the President’s trip to Africa, the White House defended the costs claiming that the expenditure offers the nation “great bang for our buck.”

After saying that the White House doesn’t determine the costs of travel and security, deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said that the visits to these little noticed parts of the world would be good exposure for the United States.

“Frankly, there will be a great bang for our buck for being in Africa, because when you travel to regions like Africa that don’t get a lot of presidential attention, you can have very long-standing and long-running impact from the visit,” Rhodes said in The Hill newspaper.

Rhodes said that ignoring Africa is ceding leadership to others in the region.

Obama Claims He Doesn’t Want to ‘Tax All Businesses Out of Business’

-By Warner Todd Huston

During a recent fundraiser, President Obama told an audience that he and the Democrats don’t want to tax all business out of business. He also said he doesn’t believe in “top down” government.

The President made these comments at a private residence in Palo Alto, California during a Democratic Senatorial campaign fundraiser in the first week of June.

“I know that there are a few Republicans here in the audience,” he said to those gathered. “If you talk to us, it turns out, you know, we’re pretty common-sense folks.”

“We don’t think government can do everything. We don’t think that top-down solutions are the right way to go. We believe in the free market. We believe in a light touch when it comes to regulations. We don’t want to tax all businesses out of business. But we do think that there’s a role to play for government.”

Barack Obama has made this claim many times on the hustings, but his actions have often been at odds with this campaign rhetoric.

California Police Dept. Asks Postmen, Garbage Collectors to Help Spot Crime

-By Warner Todd Huston

The police department in Antioch, California is so short handed it has taken the unusual step of asking mail carriers and garbage men to help them fight crime by becoming their eyes and ears on the street.

In the small town, employees of the local garbage collection service, Republic Services Inc., and letter carriers of the U.S. Postal Service have been given special tips on how to spot crime on the streets. Police have dubbed the program, “We’re Looking Out For You,” and hope to add more eyes to their force to keep the town’s 105,000 residents safe

Workers in the two separate fields will be given training and laminated cards with a list of questions intended to sharpen their powers of observation. The cards also have the department’s non-emergency phone number on them so that garbage collectors and mailmen can report anything they might see as they go about their daily business.

California’s New Cigarette Tax Plan Would Embolden Dangerous Criminals

-By Warner Todd Huston

Democrat State Senator Kevin De Leon has introduced a plan to hike cigarette taxes (SB 768 ) in order to pay for more state spending. But this idea is nothing new and has been defeated several times before. Even law enforcement has been against these tax hikes because such plans embolden dangerous criminals

States with high tobacco taxes like New York have reported higher levels of black-market smuggling, a big source of money for gangs and organized crime. By one 2011 estimate three of every five cigarettes smoked in the Empire State was purchased illegally.

Increasing tobacco taxes in California–especially at the extreme rate proposed by De Leon–will bring the same type of crime as that experienced in New York.

But this question has been dealt with by law enforcement in California in the past.

Law enforcement has identified trafficking of black market cigarette sales as a growing problem that costs California hundreds of millions a year in lost tax revenues which is one of the reasons why the LA Deputy Sheriffs opposed higher cigarette taxes in the past.

Mercatus: Illinois Ranks in Bottom Among The Least Free States in the Nation

-By Warner Todd Huston

One can’t be surprised that Obama’s home state of Illinois is one of the worst five states in the nation–like it is for most other things–in the Mercatus Center’s study of the level of freedom in each state. Naturally Illinois ranks close to the bottom of the most free states.

This is unsurprising since Illinois is situated at the bottom of all states in several different categories of what makes a successful state.

In this new Mercatus survey, Illinois has slipped two spots since last time now ranking as the 45th state on that evolving scale.

Here is how Mercatus has it…

Analysis of Ranking

Illinois is one of the least free states to live in from the perspective of regulatory policy and personal freedom, but on fiscal policy it ranks in the middle of the pack. However, there are still some fiscal issues in dire need of improvement.

Illinois’s tax burden is dead-center average, while government spending and employment are below average. Government spending has been increasing over time, however, and certain categories, such as employee retirement, are way out of line with national norms. The main fiscal problem is debt: state and local debt make up 25.1 percent of personal income.

Illinois Tops Nation in Growth of Food Stamp Recipients

-By Warner Todd Huston

President Obama’s home state of Illinois has gained a new distinction: it tops the nation in the growth of the number of its citizens on food stamps.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 15.7 percent of the Land of Lincoln’s population are now enrolled in the food stamp program.

As Joe Schoffstall points out: “The USDA’s latest data shows 2,023,635 Illinoisans were enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in February 2013. In February of 2012, 1,831,898 people took part in the program. That’s an increase of 10.5 percent in just one year.”

Schoffstall further notes that, “Illinois was the only state to see a double-digit increase of the number of residents enrolled in the SNAP program from the same time period last year.”

This should come as no surprise. Illinois consistently ranks in with the bottom worst states in nearly every metric used to measure a successful state.

President’s Obamacare Chief Fending Off Criticism From All Corners

-By Warner Todd Huston

President Obama chose former Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius to head the Department of Health and Human Services, the agency most involved in implementing the Affordable Care Act. But Sebelius is under heavy criticism for her efforts thus far to break out the “train wreck” that is Obamacare.

The Orwellian named Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is causing heartburn all across the political spectrum and for many HHS Secretary Sebelius’ missteps are making matters worse.

things have been sour from the beginning. One of the law’s principal authors, Democrat Senator Max Baucus of Montana, has called Obamacare a “huge train wreck.”

“I’m very concerned that not enough is being done so far–very concerned. Small businesses have no idea what to do, what to expect,” Baucus warned on April 17.

Baucus isn’t the only one worried. Polling still shows that more oppose the law than favor it.

Criminal Unions: The Perfect ‘Government Union Fat Cat’ Story

-By Warner Todd Huston

Today’s example of why government unions should be outlawed is a union chief who ostensibly “works” for the people of New York. He has a grueling two-hour-a-day “work” schedule and spends that time eating lunch, then sleeping.

He’s a real life union fat cat, a perfect example of why government unions should be illegal, and the poster boy for union scumbaggery. He’s the 400-pound Mark Rosenthal, the president of Local 983 of District Council 37–New York’s largest blue-collar municipal-workers union–who earns $156,000 a year in New York’s tax dollars.

Take a look at these photos showing Rosenthal hard at “work”:

The New York Post reports that Rosenthal comes in at two, eats his lunch, takes a nap, then goes home at 4PM to “beat the traffic.”

Every day he uses union funds to buy oversized lunch orders, the leftovers of which he takes home to eat everyday.

Naturally this cretin claims he’s the victim of a “smear campaign.”

But, let’s face it, this guy is what government unions look like. Folks, while you are slaving away, paying taxes, or even finding yourself out of work, these union thieves are sponging off your tax dollars, doing little to nothing for you, and retiring at a young age to enjoy decades of an easy retirement on your dime.

Liberal hero, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, thought that government unions were a terrible idea. He was right. They should be outlawed and this morbidly obese Rosenthal is a perfect example of why.

This man is stealing from New York every day he is employed.

Propaganda: NPR Incorrectly Claims IRS Has Nothing to do With Obamacare

-By Warner Todd Huston

During the May 22 broadcast of National Public Radio’s “Talk of the Nation,” host Neil Conan repeatedly contradicted a guest by claiming that the IRS has nothing at all to do with Obamacare. NPR’s Conan is, of course, completely incorrect. The IRS is up to it’s Tea Party harassing neck in Obamacare.

The guest Conan contradicted was Kellyanne Conway, a Republican strategist and pollster. Conway was on to discuss the various scandals in which Obama is mired and close to the end of her segment she questioned how the American people can trust the IRS to implement Obamacare.

Conan initially pressed her on the claim saying that she must have “misspoken.”

“And I think you may have misspoken earlier, Kellyanne Conway, about the IRS and its role in health care,” the host claimed. “It is responsible for collecting the fine if somebody does not get healthcare, it’s not responsible whether somebody gets healthcare or not.”

Washington Bridge Collapse Being Used to Push Big Government

-By Warner Todd Huston

By all accounts the Interstate 5 bridge collapse in Washington State was a result of an over sized truck load as opposed to “failing infrastructure.” But a plea for greater federal spending figured prominently in many reports on the accident nonetheless.

Naturally, many on the left stampeded immediately to decrying “austerity,” or accused the Republicans of “endangering lives” by opposing big government, while still others blamed the sequester as news of the collapse spread.

In the progressive media, infrastructure also featured prominently in coverage.

CNN, for instance, injected Obama’s call for higher spending in its piece. USA Today also claimed that the bridge collapse would “raise questions about the nation’s infrastructure.” Reuters focused on a call for “public officials to invest in infrastructure and upgrade bridges.” The Associated Press joined Reuters in that focus. And, not to be outdone, Bloomberg said, “The bridge’s collapse put a new focus on the nation’s failing infrastructure, an issue that President Barack Obama has highlighted in his second-term agenda.”

Sadly, the Voice of America also used the collapse as a means to talk about Obama’s spending wants.

Arkansas’ Democrat State Treasurer Arrested for Extortion

-By Warner Todd Huston

On Saturday the FBI arrested two-term Arkansas State Treasurer Martha Shoffner (D, Newport) on charges of “extortion under color of official right,” a violation of the Hobbs Act.

Shoffner has been under scrutiny in Arkansas for a seemingly unexplainable investment she made of state funds. After a legislative audit last year it came to light that in 2011 her office sold 11 bonds that hadn’t matured and then bought similar bonds from the same brokers, resulting in a loss of more than $58,000 of the state’s money.

Republicans have been clamoring for her resignation for sometime over this failed investment strategy.

In December of 2012, state authorities decided to hand over their investigation to federal authorities once it appeared that, along with the failed investing practices, Shoffner had also converted campaign funds to her personal use.

Feds Killing Off Private Bus Lines Based on Fraudulent Study

-By Warner Todd Huston

The story of the coming demise of Chinatown bus lines in New York City is a tale of multiple failures in both government and the media and shows that both have a bias against entrepreneurs that kills new, start up ideas with unfair regulations, faux public advocacy, and dismal reporting.

A “Chinatown buss” was a new idea in the late 90s pioneered by Chinese immigrants in the Big Apple. These were private buses that cruised the streets looking for fares like cabs do, picking customers up at curbside, not having fixed bus stops or routes, and going where ever the customer wanted to go within a defined area of the city. Because they originated in New York’s Chinatown area, they became known as “Chinatown busses.”

Unfortunately, their success led to their downfall when nosey politicians like Senator Chuck Schumer began to take notice of them. Schumer and other New York pols began to call for a crack down on the busses and started looking to hit them with an avalanche of stifling regulations meant to “save lives.”

To assist Schumer in that jobs-killing endeavor the National Transportation Safety Bureau jumped to conduct a “study” of the safety records of Chinatown busses and purported to have found that these busses had a death rate “seven times higher” than that of other services.

INFOGRAPHIC: Internet Sales Tax Is Bad for Everyone

By -Kelsey Harris The Heritage Foundation

Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) told Bloomberg Television Wednesday he would “probably not” support the Marketplace Fairness Act, an Internet sales tax bill that passed through the Senate this week by a 69–27 margin.

“Moving this bill where you’ve got 50 different sales tax codes, it’s a mess out there,” Boehner said. “You’re going to make it much more difficult for online retailers to be able to comply.”

Small business owners all over the country agree–and they’re speaking out.
Matthew Sorrell, co-founder of Infinity College Bookstore, an online used textbook store, is worried about his company’s ability to keep up with the 9,646 tax jurisdictions in the United States.

“I might have to go through all the transactions that we’ve had every month and figure out based on the ZIP Code that the book was shipped to what jurisdiction they’re in and then remit the tax to each one,” Sorrell told The Wall Street Journal.

Sorrell is just one of many small business owners who are frustrated by the complexity and high costs associated with the Internet sales tax. We put together this infographic to highlight some of their concerns.

Chinese Bloggers Get Wasteful Gov’t Official Fired

-By Warner Todd Huston

Citizen journalists in China have succeeded in getting a wasteful government official fired by reporting on a lavish party he threw paid for by government funds.

The Communist Party boss of Taizhou City, Zhang Aihua, had developed a habit of extravagant parties, high spending, and glad-handing industrial representatives, so much so that local residents had become angry at the excess.

At length, Jia Hongwei, a web forum administrator in Taizhou, joined other local citizens in outrage at Aihua’s latest blowout party. Hongwei brought his video camera and took images of the expensive foods and wines that cluttered the tables of Aihua’s party scene and posted them online.

The crowd of every-day Chinese harangued the official until he mounted a table to beg for forgiveness over a loudspeaker. “I was wrong tonight. Please forgive me. I’ll do anything if you let me go,” he is reported as having pleaded to the crowd.

But it was blogger Hongwei that seems to have been instrumental in urging the government to investigate the Communist Party boss.

Regulatory costs skyrocketed in the first term of the Obama Administration, which added nearly $70 billion to the already excessive annual burden of government do’s and don’ts. Virtually every aspect of Americans’ lives is controlled to a varying extent by regulation, including how we light our homes, wash our clothes, fuel our cars, feed our families, and obtain our health care.

The consequences are dire: less investment and innovation, fewer jobs, and the erosion of fundamental freedoms.

Leftist Lies Against Koch Brothers in Lee Fang’s New Book

-By Warner Todd Huston

Lee Fang has cobbled together a new book ostensibly meant as a guide to things that conservative activists are doing for their cause and in his chapter on the Koch brothers he regurgitates dozens of un-sourced lies that have little basis in fact even as he presents them as fact.

Firstly we must dispense with any pretense that Lee Fang is anything but a screedist, a young fellow whose only goal is to churn emotional hatred against conservatives. He isn’t interested in truth or facts and his style is to just spin loose associations into grand conspiracies in order to push his narrative.

Fang is so bad that he has had to be scolded by his own publishers for his lies. He “writes” for the left-wing magazine The Nation and why they continue to employ him after his years of outright lies is anyone’s guess.

Take Fang’s April 22 piece on how climate “reform” was “poisoned from the inside.” His piece was so filled with innuendo, lies, and distortions that The Nation had to post a three-paragraph disclaimer telling readers that everything they wee about to read was essentially untrue. This warning to the reader was half as long as Fang’s piece!

Pigford Across the Media

-By Warner Todd Huston

Coming years late to the story, The New York Times finally took a look at the Pigford scandal that Andrew Breitbart, Lee Stranahan and the Breitbart team exposed starting in 2010. At last the story is making an appearance across the media.

On Friday morning, April 26, the Times published a long piece titled, “U.S. Opens Spigot After Farmers Claim Discrimination” in which Andrew Breitbart and Congressman Steve King were credited for early criticism of the government’s corruption in the scandal.

It should be remembered that the left-wing Media Matters for America scoffed at Andrew Breitbart calling his interest in Pigford the “stupidest conspiracy theory” on the Internet. Now that MM’s precious New York Times has at last come to Andrew’s side on this issue, one wonders how long MM will keep its anti-Breitbart/Pigford posts up on its site.

A nice recap of the scandal penned by Joel Pollak can be seen on Breitbart.com.

On April 29, one of conservatism’s leading journals, National Review, published a lead editorial on the Pigford scandal not only noting at the outset that Andrew Breitbart was right all along, but that the scandal deserves more attention nationally.

As it wraps up, the NR piece arrives at the logical conclusion that Obama’s expansion of Pigford payouts “resembles in organization and aim a criminal conspiracy of breathtaking proportions, and one in which the federal government was first complicit and then ultimately responsible.”

Just so. But along the way, NR gives readers some delicious outrage over the monumental waste, lies, and abuse of authority that Andrew saw since day one.

NR expresses hope that in the wake of the recent New York Times examination of the criminal actions that is Pigford, maybe more eyes will be brought to the scandal and notes that the truth of Pigford is “worse than was previously thought.”
