The Middle East Mess

-By Alan Caruba

Anyone such as myself who lived through the long years of the Vietnam quagmire knows that the United States is repeating the same errors in the Middle East that we did with that nation. We seem incapable of recognizing a civil war when we see one and incapable of not inserting ourselves in the midst of it.

I speak specifically of Libya and the inchoate decisions and measures taken by the Obama administration. To suggest that the present White House and State Department have a Middle East “policy” is to vastly overstate and misunderstand their ignorance of that region of the world and the forces at work within it.

The United States has been militarily involved in Afghanistan since 2001, shortly after 9/11. What should have been a short sortie to inflict punishment on the al Qaeda and the Taliban has turned into a classic “quagmire”. The invasion of Iraq in 2003 reflects this as well.

Osama bin Ladden: The End of an Evil

-By Warner Todd Huston

There are very few times when we should celebrate the death of a human being. Serial killers and child rapists certainly qualify as ones whose deaths we might feel disposed to celebrate without much fear of moral qualms. Terrorist Osama bin Ladden is another one.

When tyrants fall it is always a good thing. Muamar Gaddhafi, Ida Amin, Castro, Che Guevara, Nicolae Ceaușescu, when monsters like this have finally been removed from this earth we are all better off. Though he did not lead a nation, Osama bin Ladden was, indeed, a tyrant.

Late on May 1, 2011, President Barack Obama gave the world the best news. Osama bin Ladden has been killed by American Special Forces near Islamabad, Pakistan.

Like the coward he is, he used a woman to hide behind as he tried to run away from American forces. He couldn’t even go out like a man.

Osama bin Ladden’s ideology is not dead, however. His ideals are still out there pushing to enslave the world. Radical Islam has not been cowed. This murderous, inhuman disease of a belief system is still alive and well, if wounded.

Spit upon bin Ladden, nay he rot forever in hell. But don’t imagine we have won this war against Islam.

Lastly, let us remember here that the intel that led to this wonderful outcome came from terrorists held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. This is important to remember. It is important to understand that the leftists that have wanted that facility closed would have seriously hampered this great victory over al Qaeda.

Arrogance: Obama Decides HE Can Tell A Company Where They’re Allowed to Build

-By Warner Todd Huston

Barack Obama thinks he has the power to tell companies where they are “allowed” to build new facilities and, shock of shocks, Obama wants all those facilities to be in union controlled states.

Last week Obama’s National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) announced its plans to force Boeing to keep building its aircraft in union plagued Washington State instead of building its planned new facility in South Carolina — a right to work, union free state.

They Huff and They Puff But They Can’t Get Their Facts Straight

-By Resa LaRu Kirkland

Oh Huffington Post…your dance card, like your professionalism and Arianna’s appeal, is shrinking.

Once the darling of the left with a handful of legitimate writers, and still the drooling lap dog of George Soros, you have deteriorated into the pubescent Facebook crowd of shout-much-do-nothing-good generation that only decades of freedom-crushing communist teaching can create.

Why all the fuss? It started when a young George Washington University student friend of mine sent me the following news story featured at the increasingly absurd Huffington Post:

On the Movie Set Today…

Well, all day I have been on the movie set here in Louisiana, so I won’t be posting nearly as much here for the next week (the fans say “boo” the detractors say “yaaa”).

Thus far I been training the extras in military drill for civil war soldiers and firearms training is after lunch. About 130 guys in all. Going fairly well so far.

Today and Sunday for training. Monday rehearsal and some scenes to be filmed.

Filming starts later in the week for the major scenes.

DC Comics Turns Superman Against the USA

-By Warner Todd Huston

Superman has just flipped the United States of America a super powered middle finger. In an upcoming issue of Action Comics, DC Comics is to have Superman appear before the United Nations to renounce his American citizenship.

“Truth, justice, and the American way is not enough anymore,” Superman tells us. Screw you, America.

In a convoluted storyline, Superman is to decide that being a representative of the United States of America is just too gauche for an upstanding citizen of the world like Supes. It’s too restricting, apparently, to represent the freest nation on earth, the nation that gave birth to the modern world.

So, America, Superman just isn’t that into you any more.

Expect the GOP to continue criticism, fight against EPA

-By Scott Portman

With a failure to hit the Environmental Protection Agency’s budget anywhere near expectation in the resolution last week, the GOP will likely have to switch its plan of attack on the EPA regulations that are threatening to cost businesses jobs and money in the near future.

The GOP had been pressuring in Capitol Hill on the EPA’s greenhouse gas regulations through multiple attempts and proposals to cut their budget. While republican reps were looking for a 30 percent cut to the budget, the resolution came back with only a mere 16 percent cut to the EPA. Despite the failure to have the budget cut to their liking, the GOP has managed to take part in fights over legislation throughout the early months of 2011 as well.

Senator James Inhofe was one of those responsible for the Energy Tax Prevention Act, which is geared to attack the EPA’s cap and trade tax that allow them to lay costly regulations on businesses over greenhouse gas emissions. Inhofe saw the act as a major positive, saying that “The Energy Tax Prevention Act leaves all of the essential provisions of the Clean Air Act intact, ensuring that Americans will be protected from pollution that has direct public health impacts. It also prevents EPA from twisting the Clean Air Act into a bureaucratic obstacle to growth and expansion.”

Geithner’s Spin: Auto Bailout A Success

-By Warner Todd Huston

At the Detroit Economic Club today, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner tried to claim the auto bailout is a success.

It certainly doesn’t seem like a success for the taxpayers. GM stock is about $30 today, and unless it gets up to $54, the taxpayers lose money on the deal. Why would it go up? You want to fight high gas prices by buying a Volt? How does $41 grand a pop sound? And still GM loses money on every one it sells even at that price. Not only that but we are seeing that government subsides for electric cars is good tax money wasted in any case.

Why We Can’t Trust Government on Technology

-By Warner Todd Huston

Free market advocates have for years been fighting the anti-capitalist left over government control of the Internet, a battle that has reached a temporary plateau when Obama’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) arbitrarily decided that it was in full control of the Internet and by fiat implemented the left’s long-sought net neutrality rules. This isn’t the only technology kerfuffle that the federal government is involved in, either.

Another techno-mess has been raging over a contract being considered by the Department of the Interior for its new email/messaging system using a cloud computing solution. The fight has been between Microsoft and Google and the results tends to prove that the government is as tech stupid as a Luddite on steroids. It tends to show that the government simply can’t be trusted with technology issues, whether net neutrality or otherwise.

Calif Union Chief Says You Taxpayers are Selfish and Full of ‘Envy’

-By Warner Todd Huston

You taxpayers should be ashamed of yourselves, says Art Pulaski, executive secretary-treasurer of the California Labor Federation. You big, selfish jerks should be happy to pay the taxes that gives government employees all healthcare practically for free and allows them to retire at 50 with their comfortable 40-year-long retirement pensions that pay government union members twice what you’ll ever see in your golden years.

I mean, who do you taxpayers think you are, anyway?

Interestingly enough, even the soft-headed, left-leaning voters of California seem to be getting sick and tired of the freebies give government union members at this point.

A recent L.A.Times poll found that Californians are about done with the ritzy government employees sweet deals and are becoming tired of being the union’s sugar daddy. They are in increasing numbers desirous of caps on the spiraling unearned government union pensions.

When Politics Damages the Constitution

-By Frank Salvato

The issue of eligibility where the federal government’s Executive Branch is concerned is not one of politics; it is not, in any way, shape or form related to the so-called “birther” issue. The issue of presidential eligibility is one that addresses the protection of our citizenry’s fidelity to the United States Constitution. Yet many disingenuous political operatives – who put the well-being of their political parties or special interests above honesty and good government – and many pundits, editors and producers – unwittingly or otherwise – have seen clear to blur the lines between the “birther” issue and an honest movement to affect the closing of a loophole unforeseen by our Founders and Framers.

With the stunning news that Arizona Governor Jan Brewer had vetoed legislation that would have required a candidate for the Executive Branch of the federal government to provide first-source prerequisite materials proving his or her satisfaction of Article II, Section 1, of the United States Constitution, one of the more promising doors to protecting unqualified candidates from accessing the federal ballot slammed shut.

In her letter to Arizona House Speaker Kirk Adams, she wrote:

“I do not support designating one person as the gatekeeper to the ballot for a candidate, which could lead to arbitrary or politically motivated decisions…I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for President of the greatest and most powerful nation on earth to submit their ‘early baptismal or circumcision certificates’ among other records to the Arizona Secretary of State. This is a bridge too far.”

Gov. Brewer then went on to tell FOX News’ Greta Van Susteren:

“…you know, bottom line is, is that I just have to call them as I see them. And it doesn’t help Arizona. This bill is a distraction, and we just simply need to get on with the state’s business.”

There are two fundamental and monumental flaws to Gov. Brewer’s rationale for making such a political decision where the well-being of the nation is concerned:

1) If, in fact, the legislation was to be a distraction, the “distraction” would have already taken place in the form of debate on the issue. The “distraction” – if you can call enacting legislation that would have simply asked candidates for the highest office in the land to prove their eligibility – had already passed. The noise surrounding her veto caused more of a distraction – and, incidentally, more animosity among the Republican base (allegedly Brewer’s base) – than if she would have simply signed the legislation into law.

2) The proposed law outlined a series of documents for certification as having been presented for satisfaction of USC Article II, Section 1 including either a long-form birth certificate or two or more other permitted documents, including an early baptismal certificate, circumcision certificate, hospital birth record, postpartum medical record signed by the person who delivered the child or an early census record. The Secretary of State would only be charged with certifying that the documents were real pursuant to criteria set forth by the issuing states. There is little if any discretion at all to float the charge of “gatekeeping.”

Truth be told, Governor Brewer, who many thought to have been above the fray of “oh please let me be re-elected” politics, especially in light of the stand she took against the dismal performance of the federal government regarding border security, has proven herself to be either just another cowardly politician or at an intellectual level that doesn’t allow for her to understand the “Little Nikita” constitutional crisis that currently exists.

Before and over the course of the 2008 presidential cycle, researchers from our organization, BasicsProject.org, came to the startling conclusion that while the prerequisites for holding the office of President of the United States are set forth in Article II, Section 1 of the United States Constitution there is no mechanism for enforcing or verifying a candidate’s satisfaction of those requirements.

Article II, Section 1 specifically states:

“No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.”

Yet, nowhere in the US Constitution is there authorization for a mechanism to assure that Article II, Section 1 is satisfied; there is no constitutional mechanism in place — either in the original document of in any of the amendments — that requires a candidate for the office of President of the United States to file documents proving his eligibility to hold office.

This can be explained in part for the Framers intention to recognize the sanctity of the rights of the States to not only allocate their Electoral College votes in a manner they see fit, but to craft the process by which their ballot totals engage the federal election process. It is for this reason that each state’s election authority must certify elections before the federal electors are dispatched to cast their votes.

In addition to there being no mechanism in the US Constitution:

  • The Federal Election Commission is charged, exclusively, with regulating and enforcing election campaign finance law. The FEC’s domain does not include verifying the eligibility of the candidates per Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution.
  • County and sub-state level election authorities routinely abdicate the responsibility of vetting POTUS and VPOTUS to their respective state election boards and commissions.
  • The only verification process that State Boards of Election and State Election Commissions execute is to require a Statement of Candidacy, a loyalty oath, a receipt for filing a Statement of Economic Interests (not required for federal office or political party offices) and a set of completed nominating petitions. When contacted by our researches, each and every election board and commission responded, some through their legal counsels, that the entity responsible for vetting the eligibility of their nominated candidates are the political parties themselves.
  • A search of both the Republican National Committee and Democrat National Committee websites turned up no information about how either of the party’s executive committees vets their proposed candidates. Further, no information about either of the parties 2008 candidate’s eligibility qualifications was accessible through their organization’s official websites. Phone calls querying their process were not returned.

A law – state or federal – that creates an enforcement mechanism for Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution is a protection that every American – and every elected official – should be able to agree upon. Yet, time and time again, elected officials in state after state, from both sides of the aisle, prove beyond doubt that they choose opportunistic politics and a healthy fear of the smear-mongering mainstream media and special interest groups over protecting the Constitution and the citizenry of the United States.

We the People have been told we have no standing to bring forth lawsuits on constitutional grounds regarding questions of eligibility. And our elected officials have routinely abandoned us, abdicating their responsibility to protect and serve not only the people but the very Constitution that empowers the basis for the American form of government. If our elected officials — at every level of government — refuse to stand up for the US Constitution (a founding document which each and every elected official has sworn an oath to uphold), then what, may I ask, is the citizen’s recourse? Where is the negative aspect of requiring a candidate for the highest office in this land to engage in satisfying requirements set forth by our nation’s Founding Documents?

It is irresponsible for the many disingenuous political operatives, pundits, editors and producers to skew the facts where the public’s perception of this issue is concerned. But more egregious is the reckless irresponsibility and political gamesmanship being displayed by those elected officials who have a rare opportunity to secure the sanctity of the United States Constitution.

It is time for the statesmen to emerge from the ranks of politicians. It is time for leadership and a devotion to good government over politics. It is time for each and every elected official to answer this question: Are you first a statesman or are you simply a miserable politician?

East St. Louis: More Voters Registered Than Citizens That Live There

-By Warner Todd Huston

It is a particular problem with our voter registration systems across the USA that the voting roles are so filled with ineligible names that we aren’t sure how many voters really live in any particular district. East St. Louis is no different.

In fact, East St. Louis seems to have more voters registered in its district than it even has voting population.

The Democrat Caused Pension Bomb About to Destroy Our States

-By Warner Todd Huston

A few weeks ago I wrote that unions have driven every state budget into a hole from which it isn’t likely the states can easily dig themselves out. I did not at that time reference the Pew report on the pensions mess and I want to revisit it here.

On April 5, I said, “The worst mess that states are in is because government unions have been handed luxurious and unsustainable pensions and healthcare plans by those very Democrat politicians that unions have paid off to do so. Again all at the expense of the suffering taxpayers.” The Pew report shores this up thoroughly.

In fact, the Pew report from early April 2010 even understates the problem, not because of any bias but because the stats that they used were taken from stats assembled in 2008 because that was the last year where full records had been compiled. Further, we must remember that these stats also came before the market crash ushered in during the age of Obama.

Chicago’s Cardinal Finally Punishes Catholic Bashing Priest

-By Warner Todd Huston

Father Michael Pfleger of Chicago’s Saint Sabina Church on the city’s southside has been a thorn in the side of the Catholic Church for decades. The priest has been a vocal opponent of many of the Church’s positions and religious tenets but has seemingly been beyond punishment for his heresies. That seems to finally be at an end.

Cardinal Francis George has finally taken action against the troublemaking priest and has suspended Pfleger’s “sacramental faculties as a priest” which prevents him from carrying on his duties at Saint Sabina.

The cardinal cited Pfleger’s April 11th warning that he’d leave the church if he was sanctioned for his constant outrages against the church as one of the reasons he finally took action.

Why Is Free Republic’s Jim Robinson Attacking Conservative Bloggers?

-By Allen N. Smithee

I want to report and expose a devious and vicious campaign that is currently underway on the so-called “premier” site on the Internet for conservatives, Free Republic. Ironically, the target of this campaign is fellow…conservatives, especially conservative bloggers, completely removing any justification from Free Republic for promoting this kind of action.

I moonlight as a conservative blogger, though I write for Examiner, which is a news website run by the Clarity Media Group. I have been familiar with Free Republic for several years, and I had been lurking there since about 2003 or 2004. In 2008, after being horrified and shocked by the media-assisted victory of Barack Obama, I decided to register on Free Republic in order to do my fair share as a conservative activist, working to expose his disreputable actions as POTUS. This consisted of me posting columns from my blog along with posting an equal amount of news articles from a wide variety of news sites around the Internet on Free Republic.

I only started regularly posting columns from my blog on the Free Republic website in October of 2010, and this process went fine and uninterrupted until very early March of 2011. At that point, without warning and completely abruptly, a cowardly and anonymous user by the name of “humblegunner” began stalking me by harassing me and spam-posting slanderous accusations without fail in the thread of each column from my blog that I’d post on Free Republic. Apparently, “humblegunner” is extremely slow on the uptake because it took him five months to figure out that I was posting my blog columns on Free Republic.

Telling Us Who They Fear: Left-Wing Journo Attacks Rep. Allen West

-By Warner Todd Huston

Brandon K. Thorp, a gay activist from the alternative weekly Broward-Palm Beach New Times newspaper, is only the latest left-winger to launch into a verbal assault on Lt. Col. Allen West, now a Representative from Florida’s 22nd District. Like Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman, Rep. West is one of the many conservatives that leftists fear the most. We know this because the left’s constant, fevered, overwrought attacks tell us so.

This time Thorp, who also has worked for CNN, is all hot-n-bothered by West’s April 19 use of an historical reference to rally conservative and Republican women to the cause. In an address to a *Women Impacting the Nation meeting in Boca, West urged conservative women to raise strong men by relating to them the example of the Spartan women of ancient Greece.

“When you understood what made the Spartan men strong it was the Spartan women,” West told those gathered. Thorp thought this whole meme was not only “ungraceful,” but proved West is “hateful and stupid.” Further Thorp’s poison pen informs us that he thinks West is “not nearly smart enough to give coherent extemporaneous speeches.”

Thorp’s first offbase criticism is over whether West should have been addressing his comments to mothers or fathers.

Obama’s Birth Certificate… Can We Get Past This Now? (And is This The End of Trump?)

-By Warner Todd Huston

After a poll that came out that showed that only 38% of Americans thought the president was actually born in the USA, the Obama administration has finally released Obama’s long form birth certificate.

There are several reasons that Obama finally did this and the biggest is that this issue was starting to hurt him politically as the poll above showed. Obama himself was irritated to note that talk of his birth certificate was everywhere in the Old Media detracting from the actual issues of the day.

You’ll notice that I’ve never written about this birth certificate issue. The reason was that even if he was born in another country, even if he was illicitly made president, the fact is Obama is president. That being true, there is only one way to get rid of him if he has done something wrong (well, one way besides voting him out): impeachment.

No, Beauty is Not in the Eye of the Beholder

-By Selwyn Duke

The American Thinker’s Rick Moran recently wrote a blog piece about how some Catholics in France destroyed two of Andres Serrano’s creations, excreta that some euphemistically refer to as art. Moran opened by saying that his topic would make for lively debate among commenters, and he was right. And it has also provoked a lively response from me.

In his piece, Moran states, “Art, as we learned when growing up, is in the eye of the beholder.” Yes, most of us did learn this growing up — and we learned wrong. That is to say, unless “art” doesn’t really exist.

Now, when the eye/beholder proposition is made, let us be clear on what’s being said. If we accepted that art were simply a physical representation of something — that is, it could be beautiful, ugly, uplifting, degrading or anything at all — the truth would be plain: If it were a physical representation of a thing, it would be art. And it certainly would not be in the eye of the beholder.

Wisc. Democrats Use Recall Petition Info to Harass Voters

-By Warner Todd Huston

In yet another union-styled outrage, Democrats backed by union thugs in Wisconsin are using the personal information of voters found on recall petitions to harass them because they signed a petition to recall Green Bay Democrat State Senator Dave Hansen.

Over the last few weeks thousands of Wisconsin voters signed a recall petition in Green Bay to recall Hansen and when voters sign such petitions they must give their address and phone numbers so that authorities can verify the voter’s signature in order to approve the petition. Now it seems that the Wisconsin Democrat Party has gotten hold of these petitions and have begun a telephone harassment campaign against the individual voters that signed the petitions.

The Wisconsin GOP has discovered this disgusting campaign and have found that the Democrats are using a fake phone number and a fake caller ID in order to get voters to answer the phone only to be harangued about having signed the recall petition.

Paradox: Green-Loving Washington State About to Penalize Electric Car Owners

-By Warner Todd Huston

Some people think that marriage is the most absurd institution ever invented by man. But those that think so are ignoring what is truly the most idiotic, paradoxically absurd practice in all of human history: government. Yeah, yeah, necessary evil and all, but still there is nothing that exemplifies human folly better than politics and Washington State has uncorked a doozie for us today.

From coast to coast and all over the world liberals are mindlessly going gaga for green. Anything that smacks of greenism is, with religious fervor, promoted and revered. The electric automobile, for instance, is one of the left’s dream modes of transportation. Pursuant to that dreamy green dream, liberals have made sure that all sort of tax breaks are lavished upon those citizens who dutifully jump up to their necks into the unprofitable and technologically untested world of electric cars. Washington State is no exception to this mania.

… and hilarity ensues.

The Associated Press is even a bit snarky about the whole mess.

VIDEO: Sluts Appear to be Dumb as Rocks

-By Warner Todd Huston

This is the sort of vapidity that gives serious causes a bad name, the sort of stupidity that makes people roll their eyes at every protest because idiotic efforts like this make light of every other effort.

CNN has the “news” — and video — of a protest march in Texas called the Slut Walk, an effort to highlight the idea that the way women dress is no invitation to rape them.

The Daily Mail also carried the story and quotes Elizabeth Webb, one of the organizers, as to her purpose. “I know, definitely, it is a controversial name, but we’re trying to reclaim that word and take the power away from that word. And, we want to specify that women dressing like sluts is not how people get raped.”

What? What the heck does “reclaim that word” even mean? What nice women of the past once used the word “slut” as a positive term in order for it to be “reclaimed”?

Important Information About Ill. GOP Reform Bill

-By Warner Todd Huston

Doug Ibendahl of RepublicanNewsWatch.com has been a leading advocate of the current iteration of a bill that would give Illinois’ Republican voters the opportunity to actually vote in the leaders of their own party. It is currently called SB35 but has been for sometime identified as SB600.

SB35 would reverse the way the members of the Illinois Republican State Central Committee are placed on the governing body of the state party. Currently these folks are appointed to their positions by the affirmation of all the state’s local committeemen. The actual voters have no direct say. Curiously enough, the Democrats do have direct elections of their central committeemen but Republicans do not.

Recently a state representative contacted Mr. Ibendahl for some info about the bill. This is Ibendahl’s letter, which can be seen HERE.

Dear Representative,

I’m sure you must be as amazed as I am regarding the lengths a few selfish players will go to protect a corrupted system that’s been a disaster for Republicans and for our Party. It’s sad that a few are so obsessed with trying to make sure Republican voters have inferior rights compared to every Illinois Democrat.

TIME Mag Does Not Know What ‘Influential’ Means with Top 100 Most Influential People

Let me just ask this: why is TV actress and comedienne Amy Poehler on a list of the “most influential people in the world”? It is idiotic. Ridiculously actor Colin Firth is also on the list.

Another actress, Blake Lively, a “B” actress at best, is on the list. Unbelievable. TIME has so little to say of this “most influential person” that barely a paragraph was offered about her. How influential can you be if your whole life can be summed up in a mere 65 words?

Warrantless Searches By Police of Your Cell Phone

-By Warner Todd Huston

News during this past week a story made the rounds that police in Michigan may be using a device in random traffic stops that instantly copies all the data on your cell phone and stores it for later use by police. It was said that this data copying is going on without consent and without a warrant. Michigan police are denying this claim, but the ACLU posted a letter warning them against this policy regardless. The fear here is, of course, that copying cell phone data without a warrant is a violation of the Fourth Amendment’s proscription against illegal search and seizure.
