Illinois School Gives Kids a Death Panel Assignment

-By Warner Todd Huston

A central Illinois school recently gave students an assignment many are calling a “death panel” assignment. The fifteen year olds were told to decide what six of ten people would be allowed to get life-saving medical treatment.

The school, St. Joseph Ogden High School in St. Joseph, IL, presented students with the situation where ten patients needed dialysis treatments. But, the kids were told, the local hospital only had six dialysis machines with which to save their lives. Four people must die, the assignment gravely said. Then the kids were given a list of descriptions of ten people and were told to pick the six who would get the treatment and the four who would die.

On the list were a lawyer, a housewife, a doctor, a disabled person, a college student, an ex-convict guilty of man-slaughter, a prostitute, a teacher, a cop, and a Lutheran Minister.

Kids had to choose which of these people would live and which would die.

Illinois Gun Maker Flees State, Moves to Iowa

-By Warner Todd Huston

Liberal Illinois is one of the most inhospitable states for Constitutional rights in America and because of that and other considerations yet another gun manufacturer is closing up shop in the Land of Lincoln and fleeing to a neighboring state.

Lewis Machine & Tool Company–known as LMT–has been in Milan, Illinois since it was founded 33 years ago. The company produces rifles for both the civilian market, the military, and law enforcement agencies.

But now that business owner Karl Lewis wants to expand he is logically moving his company to a better state.

Lewis is headed to Davenport, Iowa.

Chicago Finally Dumps Unconstitutional Gun Registry

-By Warner Todd Huston

On September 11, the City of Chicago finally dumped its unconstitutional requirement that gun owners register their guns with the city.

The city put the registry in place in 1968 after several lawsuits in the city and well as after the state passed stricter gun laws.

But today the courts have insisted that for too long Chicago has abused its resident’s Second Amendment rights and the city has had no choice but to give up its practice.

After the December 2012 ruling by an appeals court that the state’s ban on concealed carry was unconstitutional the state finally reversed its longstanding ban. But that left Chicago’s strict gun bans in an untenable spot.

The city is only now starting to grapple with what it will have to do to satisfy the court’s rulings and the state has been dragging its feet for months on what to do. Even after the new concealed carry law was passed the state has dragged its feet on allowing its citizens to observe their Constitutional rights.

In any case, slowly but surely Illinoisans are getting closer to having their rights finally recognized. But it is agonizingly slow, not to mention unconstitutional.

AFP Honors Illinois Activists Robert and Tempie Lyons

-By Warner Todd Huston

On Friday night, August 30, during its 7th Annual Defending the American Dream Summit, held this year in Universal Orlando theme park in Orlando, Florida, Americans for Prosperity honored Robert and Tempie Lyons for the hard work of defeating a tax hike in the downstate community of O’Fallon, Illinois, a community just east of St. Louis.

The Lyonses, members of both the Metro East Pachyderm Club, a state Republican organization, and Americans for Prosperity, worked against a property tax hike that would have added several hundred dollars per year to every home in the community.

The pair hosted numerous phone banks in their home and spent weeks calling residents to warn them about the tax hike proposal, urging them to vote against it.

When Election Day arrived, the tax hike went down to defeat by 65 percent.

For their work, the Lyonses were awarded AFP’s “Activists of the Year” award.

A Tale of Two States: Illinois vs. Wisconsin in the Public Pension Debate

-By Benjamin Yount and M.D. Kittle, cross posted from Watchdog.org

SPRINGFIELD – The dividing line in the national debate over the future of public-sector unions can be found between the Land of Lincoln and its neighbor to the north.

The story of Illinois and Wisconsin is a tale of two very different states.

Wisconsin, led by Gov. Scott Walker and majority Republicans, took on public-sector unions and won in the pursuit of balancing a $3.6 billion state budget shortfall in 2011.

.

PENSION TENSION: A large crowd of union members and the professionally outraged (kids and older people bussed to the rally) demonstrate last month in downtown Chicago.

Illinois, led by Democrats with a veto-proof supermajority in the Legislature and Democrat Pat Quinn in the governor’s mansion (at least occasionally), have long coddled the public unions to which they and their campaign war chests are beholden. Consequently, the state faces billions of dollars in unpaid bills and unfunded pension liabilities for current public employees of about $130 billion.

Wisconsin’s economic prospects have vastly improved. The state’s public pension system, while not perfect, is nearly funded – at least based on much more liberal accounting standards than market-based measures. The Badger State budget now boasts a surplus of $741 million, the vast majority of that targeted for tax cuts over the next two years.

Illinois, meanwhile, continues to be buried under a mountain of debt, a broken fiscal house that has taken the state’s credit rating with it.

Illinois Conservatives Criticize Rauner Over Tribune Photo

-By Warner Todd Huston

Friday morning’s Chicago Tribune (8/16/13) featured a photo of businessman and GOP candidate for Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner getting a big smooch on the lips from “friend and supporter Susan Petty.” The phot got many conservatives up in arms.

Venture capitalist Bruce Rauner, a Republican candidate for Illinois governor, kisses friend and supporter Susan Petty on Thursday after riding to the Illinois State Fair in Springfield on his motorcycle. Thursday was Republican Day at the fair. (Tribune caption)

The photo, taken by John J. Kim at the Republican Day event at the Illinois State Fair, raised criticism from several directions. Some raised concerns about moral issues and some found it a telling illustration of political coalition building.

First of all the woman delivering the smooch is one Susan Petty, a political operative who was until the end of July on the payroll of Adam Andrzejewski’s For the Good of Illinois.

Chicago Public School Teacher Attacks Capitalism, Says Violent Revolution Coming

-By Warner Todd Huston

The policy group called ALEC (the American Legislative Exchange Council) had its 40th anniversary meeting in Chicago on August 7, 8, and 9, but not everyone was celebrating. In front of the hotel at which the event was held, the unions gathered to attack and one Chicago school teacher took the occasion not only to say that capitalism has failed and that government should be for the redistribution of wealth, he also threatened “violent revolution” unless America acquiesces to union demands.

CPS Teacher Timothy Meegan, who teachers at Roosevelt High School in Chicago, had quite a bit of boilerplate to say about ALEC, but before long he edged toward some more startling rhetoric, the sort that makes one hope he isn’t teaching to Chicago’s school children.

At the end of his canned anti-ALEC speech he lapsed into the sort of rhetoric that would be at home in any speech from the worker’s paradise. In fact, it got downright red-lipped with talk of “violent revolution,” attacks on capitalism and the free market, as well as cries that government should “redistribute the wealth.”

And all this talk of violent revolution was Jesse Jackson approved. The very right reverend can be seen clapping Mr. Meegan on the back after his diatribe is over.

95-Year-Old Vet Killed by Police in Illinois Retirement Home With Taser, Bean Bag Guns

-By Warner Todd Huston

April, 2014 update below…

The police state strikes again.

In a major over-the-top reaction, police taserd and shot bean bags at a 95-year-old military veteran, killing him, after he refused medical treatment at his retirement home.

On July 25, police were called to the Victory Centere, an assisted living community in Park Forest Illinois–a southern suburb of Chicago–after resident John Wrana, a veteran of WWII, became “combative” while refusing medical treatment by the home’s nursing staff.

Wrana began to get unruly when he was “involuntarily” committed for medical treatment by staff at the facility, police said in a statement.

Frmr Congressman Walsh: Illinois GOP Delegation Wants me to Stay Out of Washington

-By Warner Todd Huston

Joe Walsh was, to say the least, a firebrand as the Congressman for the Illinois 8th District during his one term in Congress. He lost his re-election bid in the 2012 cycle, but while he was out there in D.C. he was always in the news for one thing or another that he said or did. Apparently he was such a firebrand that all our current GOP Congressmen have told Joe not to run for Congress again!

Walsh appeared at an event in Wauconda, Illinois on Sunday, July 28, and told the crowd that he’s poked around with his former colleagues as to whether or not they’d support him for another run for Congress if he should decide to try.

Joe said that his former pals are less than enthused, if you will.

Some say that the reason his form colleagues don’t want him around is so that they can “fold like a cheap tent” in the face of Democrat demands and his presence in D.C. makes that harder to do.

What do you think?

Now-a-days Joe Walsh is a talk show host (what else could he be! Ha, ha) and has a great show evening on WIND AM 560 in Chicago.

Rep. Bustos Claims She’s ‘For the Troops,’ But Skips Defense Spending Vote?

Representative Cheri Bustos (Dem., IL 17th) entered Congress in 2010 claiming she was “for the troops.” But all it took for her to skip the latest vote for defense spending was a photo OP with Barack Obama, the very guy trying to gut the military.

Bustos was one of the nine no-show voters on July 24.

But instead of staying in Washington for the latest vote on the Department of Defense Appropriations bill, Bustos was hobnobbing with Obama during his rehash “jobs” speech in Galesburg, Illinois.

Ill. State Rep Davis: ‘Maybe The Police Are Killing Some Of These Kids’

Illinois State Representative Monique Davis is blaming the Chicago Police Department for the high number of killings in the Windy City. She’s not just blaming the CPD for bad policing, though. She wonders if it is the police themselves doing some of the killing.

Davis, a House member from a district on Chicago’s South Side, uttered the accusation in a “some say so” manner on Detroit’s WCHB-AM radio on July 16.

More Proof That Democrats Hate Democracy and the Constitution

-By Warner Todd Huston

There was once a day when the Democrat Party was very concerned about the protections of the U.S. Constitution and the due process of the law. But they used that fealty to the law of the land to protect slavery and disenfranchise blacks. To eliminate this, the system was used against Democrats to destroy their evil intent. Democrats learned a lesson from this, sure, but it was the wrong one. Instead of learning that the Constitution and the law is good, now, with their 100-year-old fealty to un-American, European-styled socialism, Democrats use that same system to undermine every tenet of Americanism. The lesson they learned was not to look for the intent of the law but to use the law as a weapon to destroy enemies.

Sadly, the Democrat Party has never been a force for good in this country.

Take the Second Amendment, for instance. Like the good apparatchiks they are, Democrats pretend they love the U.S. Constitution and blithely tell the media that they would never want to take away guns. Why, all they want, they say, is “common sense” gun laws that keep us all safe while protecting our Constitutional rights of self-defense.

This, however, is a blatant lie.

Look to Illinois, the last, deeply blue state to hold out for passing a concealed carry law, a law that the Supreme Court of the United States has demanded they pass.

Mayor of Illinois’ 3rd Largest City Quits Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns Group

-By Warner Todd Huston

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s anti-Second Amendment group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, has lost another member, this time the mayor of Rockford, Illinois–the state’s third largest city.

At a townhall-styled event sponsored by the Rockford Tea Party on June 22 in Loves Park, Illinois, Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey announced that he has, indeed, quit Mayor Bloomberg’s gun group because Bloomberg’s group was not fulfilling what Morrissey felt was the group’s stated intentions.

Morrissey has for some time been saying he intended to quit the anti-gun group and some citizens wondered if this was just electioneering, but at this most recent townhall event, Mayor Morrissey has for the first time said definitively that he is out.

In the video shot by local political blogger Ulysses Arn, Mayor Morrissey said the chief reason he left Bloomberg’s group is because he thought the group would be against illegal guns but has instead become a group looking for ways to ban legal guns and attack the rights of legal gun owners. He also said that he intends to get a concealed carry license himself when they become available in Illinois.

Morrissey also made a salient point about the sort of guns Bloomberg’s group keeps harping on. The mayor pointed out that the sort of gun crime he sees in Rockford has nothing whatever to do with “assault rifles” but is instead criminal use of handguns. Yet Bloomberg’s group seems chiefly interested in so-called assault rifles despite the fact that little crime is committed by criminals using assault rifles.

Dissing Erika Harold: Racist Rant Gets GOP Chairman in Hot Water

So, for the upcoming 2014 mid term elections, Davis has a competitor for the 13th District seat. But one Davis supporter is not happy at all about the competition.

In his zeal to come to the support of Rodney Davis, County Chairman Jim Allen of the Montgomery County GOP made an ass of himself with a racist, email rant slamming Harold as “the love child of the D.N.C.”

The email rant was sent on June 18 and reported by Dough Ibendhal of RepublicanNewsWatch.com.

Mercatus: Illinois Ranks in Bottom Among The Least Free States in the Nation

-By Warner Todd Huston

One can’t be surprised that Obama’s home state of Illinois is one of the worst five states in the nation–like it is for most other things–in the Mercatus Center’s study of the level of freedom in each state. Naturally Illinois ranks close to the bottom of the most free states.

This is unsurprising since Illinois is situated at the bottom of all states in several different categories of what makes a successful state.

In this new Mercatus survey, Illinois has slipped two spots since last time now ranking as the 45th state on that evolving scale.

Here is how Mercatus has it…

Analysis of Ranking

Illinois is one of the least free states to live in from the perspective of regulatory policy and personal freedom, but on fiscal policy it ranks in the middle of the pack. However, there are still some fiscal issues in dire need of improvement.

Illinois’s tax burden is dead-center average, while government spending and employment are below average. Government spending has been increasing over time, however, and certain categories, such as employee retirement, are way out of line with national norms. The main fiscal problem is debt: state and local debt make up 25.1 percent of personal income.

Illinois Tops Nation in Growth of Food Stamp Recipients

-By Warner Todd Huston

President Obama’s home state of Illinois has gained a new distinction: it tops the nation in the growth of the number of its citizens on food stamps.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 15.7 percent of the Land of Lincoln’s population are now enrolled in the food stamp program.

As Joe Schoffstall points out: “The USDA’s latest data shows 2,023,635 Illinoisans were enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in February 2013. In February of 2012, 1,831,898 people took part in the program. That’s an increase of 10.5 percent in just one year.”

Schoffstall further notes that, “Illinois was the only state to see a double-digit increase of the number of residents enrolled in the SNAP program from the same time period last year.”

This should come as no surprise. Illinois consistently ranks in with the bottom worst states in nearly every metric used to measure a successful state.

The Broken Clock Principal: Illinois Does Fracking Right

-By Warner Todd Huston

For the extreme left, hydraulic fracturing (known as colloquially as fracking) is the newest bugbear. There are all sorts of false claims about what it “does” to our water and our environment. So, with this anti-fracking crusade crackling along the Internet tubes, most left-wing states are lining up against allowing the natural gas drilling practice to be used within their borders. But Illinois is bucking that left-wing trend.

This is notable because Illinois is one of the worst states in nearly every single metric of what makes a state successful. It has some of the highest unemployment, one of the worst abusive lawsuit climates, the most anti-business legislature, has the only big city that is losing population (Chicago)… in short, Illinois figures prominently with the bottom five states in nearly every measurement that makes an economically successful state.

As Sean Hackbarth writes, California is taking that anti-fracking line that doesn’t surprise considering the fact that California is the other state that consistently ranks with Illinois at the bottom of successful states.

Dem. Senator Durbin Not Sure if Bloggers Deserve Constitutional Protection

-By Warner Todd Huston

In an appearance on Fox News Sunday, senior Illinois Senator, Democrat Dick Durbin, expressed his doubt as to whether bloggers deserved Constitutional protection for their work online.

On the May 26 broadcast of the Sunday show, Durbin told host Chris Wallace that he wasn’t sure if bloggers or “someone who is Tweeting” should be given protections under a media shield law.

Durbin noted that he was not prepared to ask for a special counsel to investigate Eric Holder and his snooping on the business and personal phone calls of nearly 100 reporters of the Associated Press, but he went further to question just who a media shield law would cover.

But here is the bottom line–the media shield law, which I am prepared to support, and I know Sen. Graham supports, still leaves an unanswered question, which I have raised many times: What is a journalist today in 2013? We know it’s someone that works for Fox or AP, but does it include a blogger? Does it include someone who is tweeting? Are these people journalists and entitled to constitutional protection? We need to ask 21st century questions about a provision in our Constitution that was written over 200 years ago.

Durbin did not go on to attempt to clarify what those limits should be.

Useful Idiot: Illinois Democrat Says Govt’s Job is to ‘Give Rights’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Illinois State Representative Sara Feigenholtz thinks her job is to “give rights” to people. Feigenholtz recently blurted that out in an interview giving us a perfect example of the key difference between those interested in preserving the American system, its morals, and traditions, and those that have no interest in such niceties and instead what to wholly remake the relationship between government and citizen giving government more and more power over everyone.

In the interview, Feigenholtz, a Chicago Democrat in the 12th District, announced her intention to “give rights” to the gay community in Illinois and felt that this “giving” of rights was one of the most important jobs of elected officials.

“For me, the most precious thing I do as a lawmaker is giving people rights,” Feigenholtz said. “We have a powerful opportunity as elected officials to do this.”

As an aside, Feigenholtz then went on to disgustingly exploit the Holocaust in WWII as a means to push her “gay rights” issues.

Of course, this little admission shows there is a monumental chasm here between progressives and left-wingers like Feigenholtz and the rest of us that hew closer to American tradition.

Farewell Chip Gerdes

-By Warner Todd Huston

If you are a Midwesterner–especially in Illinois and Missouri–and you are in any way connected with political campaigning, you’ve heard about or run across Chip Gerdes. A big bear of a guy, Gerdes was one of the two states’ most active background operatives.

Gerdes wasn’t an “out there” guy, not the sort of guy that people outside of the in-the-know world of political operatives would have met or heard of. Chip worked behind the scenes and his hand was evident in so many issue and candidate info campaigns in Illinois it was hard to keep track of them all. As Breitbart.com’s Joel Pollak said, “He was an Alinskyite–for the good guys.”

Chip was always very full of life, verve, and swagger. Ever ready to ride to the sound of the guns whenever conservatives in Illinois and Missouri needed him. And boy did he love what he did.

Whenever one encountered Gerdes he was gregarious with a slap to the back, a hearty handshake, a word about his latest campaign effort, and an offer to go get a drink at the earliest convenience.

Hey Dhimmi Duckworth, Rep. Joe Walsh Was Right About Boston Bombers

-By Warner Todd Huston

TODAY: A bombing during the Boston Marathon kills three and injures over a hundred, some requiring multiple amputations. Muslims that had become naturalized American citizens perpetrated these crimes.

During the 2012 election cycle, then Representative Joe Walsh was attacked by his opponent, Tammy Duckworth–now our elected Congressman–and her campaign assistants in what we call “the press” because at a campaign stop he said there are homegrown radical Islamists in America that are just as dangerous as those overseas.

In response to criticism by Dhimmi Duckworth, Walsh said the following: “While the overwhelming majority of Muslim Americans are as peace loving as everyone else, there are radical Islamists right here in the United States trying to kill Americans and destroy this country.”

This man was turned out of office despite that he was 100% right. Now we have a terror apologist in that seat in Washington DC. This is only in keeping with a President that feels the same way as Dhimmi Duckworth.

Obama and Dhimmi Duckworth have failed to keep America safe. Boston’s blood is on their hands.

An Interview With Chad Koppie, Running for U.S. Senate From Illinois

-By Warner Todd Huston

Chad Koppie has decided to throw his hat in the ring for the 2014 race for Senate and recently I took a few minutes to get an idea of what issues interest him. Koppie is both fiscally as well as socially conservative and has several considered ideas about how things need to be.

Koppie is a conservative Republican from Kane County and currently sits on the Kane County Regional Board of Schools. He has also been a township trustee, a school board member, and a hospital board member in his county. He’s run for other offices, most recently for Senate in 2008.

In 2008, Koppie ran under the Constitution Party banner for Senate. You can see his presentation at WTTW T’s “free time” segment from 2008.

His bio states: “Chad Koppie is strongly pro-life, pro-gun rights, and anti-illegal alien. He wants to repeal Obamacare. He wants to help eliminate the Dept. of Education, audit the Federal Reserve, and cut all other federal spending by 3%, per year, for 10 years. He supports a federal flat tax. He supports a balanced budget amendment, for the Constitution.”

I began our discussion asking him about the Illinois establishment GOP. I wondered how he was going to get their support. Turns out, he didn’t intend to worry much about the establishment and plans on reaching out to the grassroots to launch his campaign.

Ill Urges Gay Couples to File ‘As if Married’ on Federal Taxes

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Illinois Review noticed an interesting thing about the instructions for the State of Illinois 2012 tax returns. Illinois is urging gay couples to file as “married.”

As IR notes, tax filings may be a bit confusing for same sex couple in Illinois. The Land of Lincoln allows for civil unions, but the federal government does not, so figuring out how to file may be a bit of a challenge.

The instructions get even more confusing because the Illinois civil union law does not require couples to denote whether they are same sex when filing for civil union licenses. However, the Illinois tax form and instructions explicitly refer to same-sex couples civil unions and denotes other, special instructions for opposite sex civil unions.

At the top of the tax form, the IL-1040 has a check box option for same-sex couples that reads: “D. Check if same-sex civil union return (see Instructions)”

Here is a scan of the front page of the instruction booklet…

Here is a scan of the actual instructions…

Champaign Mayor Accused of Assaulting Local Musician

Champaign Mayor Don Gerard, once a local rock and roll musician, has been accused of assaulting a local musician at a public event.

Champaign musician Jim Bean has filed for an order of protection against Mayor Gerard saying that he physically assaulted him at the Boneyard Creek Community Day sponsored by the Champaign Park District.

Bean told police that he was playing a song on his guitar when Mayor Gerard interrupted him and began to verbally assault him. The argument continued until Mayor Bean called the police on the musician. The police came but no charges were filed at that time.

Gerard claims that the musician had somehow harassed his teenaged daughter, but musician Bean says he doesn’t even know the Mayor’s daughter.

All Other Problems Solved, Chicago Democrats’ New Law Worried About Dogs Behind the Wheel

-By Warner Todd Huston

Having apparently solved all of the other debilitating problems Illinois is facing, Chicago Democrats have now turned their considered attention to making sure dog owners don’t let their puppies get behind the wheel of an automobile.

This important bill (HB1581) amends the Illinois vehicle code to ban drivers from putting their pooch on their laps as they drive. Presumably the Democrats understand it is the humans that are doing the driving, not the dogs–but we may need to launch a second legislative campaign to clarify that.

As Chicago-based Democrat and co-sponsor of the bill, Rep. Bully Burke, says, “Because I travel, I can’t help but observe the number of people with dogs on their laps.” And so, ol’ Billy is out to correct this egregious public safety issue. He’s all about solving the puppy-distracted driver issue.

This is a vital issue, to be sure.

Why? Well, it’s obvious that Illinois Democrats have solved every other nagging issue in the Land of Lincoln, right?

Illinois Middle Schooler Told Marines Themed T-Shirt is ‘Inappropriate’ at School

-By Warner Todd Huston

On Monday, an Illinois middle schooler was told that his U.S. Marines T-Shirt was “inappropriate” to wear in school and that if he didn’t take the shirt off, cover it up, or turn it inside out he’d be suspended.

The shirt Middle schooler Michael McIntyre, 13, wore to school featured a pair of crossed M16 rifles beneath the word “Marines.” The boy’s father, Dan McIntyre, feels that the teacher objected to the depiction of the rifles and that is what sparked her demand that the boy take off the shirt.

The demand was made by Teacher Karen Deverell, a reading and language arts teacher at Genoa-Kingston Middle School, on Monday, February 13. The boy’s father reports that his son followed the orders.

In an exclusive interview, Michael’s father, Dan McIntyre, said, “He’s worn the shirt before, so I don’t know why they said anything this time.”

Chicago Tribune’s Anti-Republican Hit Piece

-By Warner Todd Huston

In his recent column on the GOP candidates running to replace Jesse Jackson, Jr., the Chicago Tribune’s Bill Ruthhart either lied about his ultimate goal or he is just a terrible journalist. Either way his latest piece turned out to be a mere hit piece instead of news.

Ruthhart’s piece was apparently supposed to be informing the Tribune’s readers about the several Republican candidates vying to replace the disgraced Jesse Jackson, Jr. in the special election for Chicago’s Second Congressional District. Instead of giving a fair representation of that information, though, Ruthhart misled readers.

In the case of candidate Eric Wallace, Ruthhart offers opinion, not facts, and with Paul McKinley the writer doesn’t give all the facts pertinent to the points he raised so that readers can fully understand what is going on with the candidate.

First Ruthhart smears Eric Wallace as a dunce.
