A few years after the Civil War as the nation started upon its long road toward reconciliation, rebuilding, and healing the wife of one of the war’s union generals noticed the touching devotion of Confederate widows, wives and their children as each year they came together to place flowers and little flags at the graves of their fallen. Mary Simmerson Cunningham Logan was so moved by the devotion she witnessed that she urged her husband, Illinois General John A. “Blackjack” Logan, to look into creating what was to become Memorial Day.
General Logan was a Senator from Illinois and eventually became a candidate for Vice President on the 1884 Republican ticket, losing to Grover Cleveland and another Illinoisan, Vice President Adlai Stevenson. But before all that Logan was instrumental in creating Decoration Day, the celebration of the nation’s war dead that eventually became Memorial Day.
The following is the general order that Logan issued in 1868.
HEADQUARTERS GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC
General Orders No.11, WASHINGTON, D.C., May 5, 1868The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

To honor our troops for this year, I am going to share this story about their mettle. What follows are excerpts from remarks by Marine Lt. Gen. John F. Kelly made to the Semper Fi Society of St. Louis on November 13, 2010. While leading his platoon on a combat patrol, Kelly’s son, Marine 1st Lt. Robert Michael Kelly, had been killed in action four days earlier in Sangin, in southern Afghanistan. Lt. Kelly was only 29-years-old.

“Those with less of a sense of service to the nation never understand it when men and women of character step forward to look danger and adversity straight in the eye, refusing to blink, or give ground, even to their own deaths… No, they are not victims but are warriors, your warriors, and warriors are never victims regardless of how and where they fall. Death, or fear of death, has no power over them. Their paths are paved by sacrifice, sacrifices they gladly make… for you….
“Two years ago when I was the commander of all U.S. and Iraqi forces, in fact, the 22nd of April 2008, two Marine infantry battalions, 1/9 ‘The Walking Dead,’ and 2/8 were switching out in Ramadi… Two Marines, Corporal Jonathan Yale and Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter, 22 and 20 years old respectively, one from each battalion, were assuming the watch together at the entrance gate of an outpost that contained a makeshift barracks housing 50 Marines… Yale was a dirt poor mixed-race kid from Virginia with a wife and daughter, and a mother and sister who lived with him and he supported as well. He did this on a yearly salary of less than $23,000. Haerter, on the other hand, was a middle-class white kid from Long Island. They were from two completely different worlds… But they were Marines, combat Marines, forged in the same crucible of Marine training, and because of this bond they were brothers as close, or closer, than if they were born of the same woman.

MSNBC doesn’t appear to care about our nation’s beleaguered veterans in this mounting medical care scandal. Only one of the left-wing cable network’s prime-time hosts have covered the scandalous treatment of our sick vets and then only once.
The developing scandal has revealed that thousands of veterans have been put on secret wait lists and denied healthcare while VA hospital administrators lie about having done so in order for doctors and administrators to get government bonuses. Many veterans have died while awaiting medical treatment and these months-long wait times only foreshadow what will happen to all of us as Obamacare’s horrid tentacles force its way into our national healthcare system.
But MSNBC doesn’t seem at all interested in news that doesn’t fit its extreme, blindly left-wing bias. The network is completely ignoring the story, even though one administration official has already “resigned” because of the whole thing.

The scandal at the Veteran’s Administration (VA) is growing every week. As each new VA hospital is revealed to have made sick veterans wait so long for care that many died while waiting, and then subsequently covered up the truth, we all must come to grips with the fact that this is Obamacare writ large.
If you hadn’t been paying attention to how badly Obama’s government healthcare system is treating our elderly and sick veterans, you should. Because with Obamacare this sort of criminal behavior is coming to you and your sick relatives whether you served in the military or not.
Essentially what has been happening is that employees, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare pros at the VA have been allowing themselves to have grueling four-hour work days while wait times for their services have naturally been growing exponentially–after all there are fewer hours in a day that patients can be served if the docs and nurses only work four hours a day!
The cover up is the secondary part of this scandal. The newest report at CBS has only the latest example of this disgusting state of affairs.

Four restaurants, three of which are McDonald’s, have closed down on several military bases and a host of other outlets, like Pizza Huts, are also saying they will soon be closing their shops. These closures will seriously damage the quality of life for our soldiers on our military bases and it is all thanks to Barack Obama.
The shocking report from the Military Times has several Republican lawmakers alarmed that the quality of life on our military bases will be diminished thanks to Obama’s meddling.
According the MT, several other contractors who operate restaurants and other small businesses on military bases “have asked to be released from their Army and Air Force Exchange Service contracts to operate fast food restaurants at two other installations.”

In Virginia, the U.S. Army has built an American city, replete with a church, a mosque, an embassy building, a bank and a working subway system, in order to practice assaulting American cities. Welcome to Obama’s America, folks.
The town took six years to complete, is built on a 300-acre plot of government-owned land in Virginia and cost taxpayers $96 million. It is designed to, “replicate complex operational environments and develop solutions.”
The “training” facility was completed and opened in January of this year and is operated by the U.S. Army’s Asymmetric Warfare Group.
Unveiling the new facility, Colonel John P. Petkosek, the commander of the group, said:

Most reviewers of the new Fox 1/2 hour Army sitcom, Enlisted, felt the show was affecting, even sweet. While that isn’t far off the mark, it is nonetheless a bit hard to feel that making fun of our armed forces is a good idea when so many of them are still facing combat overseas.
Enlisted starts off with super solder Sgt. Pete Hill (7th Heaven star Geoff Stults) who is forced to leave the front lines in Afghanistan because he punched a Colonel who refused to send him support during a fire fight.

Obama’s Veteran’s Administration has prevented delivery of hand-made Christmas cards that were to go to wounded veterans because the cards made by kids at a Dallas area grade school have the words “Merry Christmas” on them. The VA claims that this traditional Christmas wish will upset veterans who aren’t religious and so the cards were not allowed.
Fifty-two students at Grace Academy in Prosper, Texas, sent their hand-made cards to the VA hospital in Dallas on Monday, but authorities declined to accept the cards and would not allow the kids visiting to hand them out, Fox 4 in Dallas-Fort Worth reported.
Asked why she was making cards for our wounded soldiers, fourth grader Gracie Brown said, “I’m hoping that it might make their day because their family might live far away, and they might not have somebody to celebrate Christmas with and I’d like them to know they’ve not been forgotten and somebody wanted to say thank you.”

America is a singularly different nation where it concerns our military veterans. We love them. We even have a national holiday to honor them. This is not so in most of the rest of the world. Elsewhere military veterans are not so loved as they are here.
Is that because the United States is the Sparta of the world, loving war more than anything else? Hardly. In fact its because our soldiers bring peace wherever they go, not perpetual war.
In other countries, soldiers are usually the dregs of society, living off the people while at the same time lording over them with machine guns and violence.
In other countries the military is feared by both the people and the government because all too often the army is used to take power and steal away the government for its own aggrandizement. There is no accident that the word “coup” is one rarely spoken in the USA unless when viewing foreign news.
So, not in America. In the USA we respect our soldiers because they respect us as much as they respect the law.
When an American sees a soldier an American will feel pride, not fear. When an American hears that a fellow is a veteran, an American thanks that fellow for his service.
In other countries when people see soldiers they fear them, they loathe them. In other countries they don’t want to sit near soldiers on public transportation, they avoid eye contact. Here we shake their hand and ask if they need anything.
So, from us to you, our dear military veterans, we thank you. We thank you for putting your lives on hold while serving us, while making sure we are safe and able to go about our business unafraid of danger, and for putting your own safety at risk.
Happy Veterans Day to you all.

Happy Veterans Day, 2013: Why OUR Veterans Are Different”

An inscription on a WWII monument in Kohima, India fittingly describes the sacrifices that our soldiers make with their service to our nation. And on this Veterans Day it is also fitting to focus on it. The Inscription says:
“When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Their Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today.”
What could be a more fitting tribute to the sacrifices made by our fallen loved ones, comrades, and servants? They gave their last full measure so we could enjoy the freedoms we are so fortunate to have today. They gave their lives for our benefit in the truest definition of sacrifice.
This memorial commemorates the Allied dead that faced the Japanese 15th Army upon its invasion of India in March of 1944. The invasion was beaten back by June of the same year through the sacrifice of these Allied troops.
The words are attributed to John Maxwell Edmonds (1875 -1958), an English Classicist who in 1916 added them to a collection of 12 epitaphs to commemorate World War One. Adding the inscription to the Kohima monument was a suggestion by Major John Etty-Leal, the GSO II of the 2nd Division who was a classical scholar in civilian life.
The verse is thought to have been inspired by the Greek lyric poet Simonides of Ceos (556-468 BC) who wrote after the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC: “Go tell the Spartans, thou that passest by, That faithful to their precepts here we lie.”
And now we too can recall this verse etched into a stone in a far away and foreign land as a perfect tribute to our fallen as well as for those who gave service to their fellows by wearing the uniform of our armed forces.
So, thank you all. We appreciate your sacrifice. And happy Veterans Day.

80 members of the Air Force at one base are testifying that they are being harassed, threatened and even punished because they refuse to support gay “marriage.”
Fox News’ Todd Starnes has the exclusive story of airmen at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas who say they are being attacked by homosexual militants.
Starnes reports: “There is an atmosphere of intimidation at Lackland Air Force Base,” said Steve Branson, the pastor of Village Parkway Baptist Church in San Antonio. “Gay commanders and officers are pushing their agenda on the airmen. There is a culture of fear in the military and it’s gone to a new level with the issue of homosexuality.”
The pastor says he attended a meeting of many of these Airmen where they voiced their concerns over being harassed by their superiors for standing up for their own, personal religious principles and continuing to oppose the homosexual agenda.

Miss Kansas is a bowhunting, tattooed, blond-haired, member of the National Guard and she hopes to become the next Miss America winner.
“Nobody expects a soldier to be a beauty queen,” Theresa Vail recently told People magazine. “But I’m all about breaking stereotypes.”
“My whole platform is empowering women to overcome stereotypes and break barriers. What a hypocrite I would be if I covered my ink,” Vail said. “How can I tell other women to be fearless and true to themselves if I can’t do the same? I am who I am, tattoos and all.”
Vail, a Second, Sgt. in the Kansas National Guard, has two large tattoos. The one on her left shoulder is the insignia for the U.S. Army Dental Corps. The second is a version of the Serenity Prayer and runs down her entire right side.
Sgt. Vail is an M16 marksman, a bow hunter, and a mechanic. The Miss Kansas Pageant was her first pageant, a contest she won nine months ago. She entered on the advice of her commanding officer.

A shocking new report finds that murderous Mexican drug cartels may be hiring members of the US military to act as guns-for-hire both in Mexico and the United States.
After the conviction of a member of the army who was a gang member before entering the service, many are starting to worry that some members of the military are turning mercenary and selling their services to the drug dealers.
Recently Private Michael Apodaca, former Army Lt. Kevin Corley, and Sgt. Samuel Walker were all arrested and convicted of taking murder-for-hire contracts from Juarez and Los Zetas drug cartels.
Some of this is born of gang affiliation, a problem that has been growing inside the U.S. military for some time.

Meet Lindsey Stone. She’s the chubby little scumbag, punk that posted on her Facebook account a photo showing her giving the finger to our troops and pretending to scream at a sign at Arlington National Cemetery that asked visitors to be respectfully quiet among the graves of our fallen heroes.
Lindsey Stone, self-professed “douchebag.”
Of course, like all cowards of her stripe in the modern age, as soon as people started ripping her bloated rear-end, she scrubbed her Facebook account, but before she did she had a whiny little explanation of sorts to explain why she is such a skank.
Lindsey Stone, self-professed “douchebag,” pretends she wasn’t being disrespectful by giving the troops the finger.
Sorry you little turd. No one believes your back pedaling now. You know and we know that you were giving the finger to the millions that have died in service to our country.
You deserve this blowback, you little cretin.

Occasionally it is interesting to check out the Twitter feeds of employees of the Old Media establishment to see what sort of things they like to banter about on social media. Invariably, it seems, when we do this we find that the member of the media in question isn’t as non-partisan as they pretend to be in their work. Such is the case with Larry Shaughnessy, a producer at CNN’s Washington bureau covering the Dept. of Defense and Veterans Affairs.
A look over Mr. Shaughnessy’s recent Tweets reveals a man that hates Mitt Romney, hates former Sec. of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, and loves him some Obama.
Worse, for a man whose job is to report on veterans, he also slammed famed military school, the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), as just a bunch of kids “playing dress up.” No respect at all for these young people, most of whom go on to serve our country.
Of VMI, Shaughnessy said, “VMI ain’t a military instution [sic]. Its a school where the kids play dress up. They are no more required to serve than Yale grads”

Lifetime’s Army Wives has often walked up close to anti-American plot lines without stepping too far over the line, but this weekend’s episode crossed right over into the left’s famous — and famously bogus — favorite storyline: turning patriotic Americans into villains.
This is one of the far left’s favorite plot lines. Hollywood loves turning patriots into whacked out, enemies despite the fact that in real life such a thing is extremely rare.
In the episode aired on August 5 entitled Centennial, a wacko “patriot” planned to shoot an Army general to right the wrongs of a country gone bad. The mad man felt that the nation was being destroyed by the un-American activities of the government and in a computer recording he said he intended to strike a blow for true Americanism by killing the general.
The episode featured a cliffhanger ending typical of the series. It ended with the shooting scene the results of which will be resolved next week.
The entire plot is based almost solely on the actions of one domestic terrorist. When Timothy McVeigh brought down the Murrah Federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995 he was linked to the Militia movement and said to be desirous of taking down an out of control government. McVeigh was portrayed as an unhinged, über patriot gone awry.

A military judge has just put off American justice in a terror trial so that the accused can observe Ramadan. So our culture, our system of justice is now to take a back seat to Islam. This is how our civilization ends and how we capitulate to radical Islamism without our firing a shot, folks.
As the AP reports, “A U.S. military judge agreed Monday to postpone the next court hearings at the Guantanamo Bay prison for five men charged in the Sept. 11 attacks to avoid a conflict with the Muslim holy period of Ramadan.”
Well, isn’t that nice of him? Those that perverted their own religion to launch an attack that killed thousands of Americans will be allowed to take a holiday from their prosecution!

In August of 2011, Brigadier General Charlotte L. Miller, California’s first Army female general, was “involuntarily separated” from the California National Guard for what she feels are invalid reasons. In fact, when the order originally came down there weren’t much by way of reasons even given. At last Miller is speaking out and making some pretty serious charges against Major General David Baldwin, the man that fired her, by testifying before the California State Senate Rules Committee against his nomination to head the Calif. National Guard.
Last June, Miller was informed by The Adjutant General’s office (TAG) that she was being removed from her position and cast out of the California National Guard after over 30 years service and a near spotless record. What made matters worse was that, according to Miller, the TAG cited no authority or statute that authorized her removal nor was any proof of the specific charges made offered.
Miller further notes that her own due process was violated by the sudden dismissal and she says several military statutes were violated in the separation. Miller also reports that she has never been allowed access to copies of any investigations or findings that the TAG claims it based her dismissal upon.

USPS Deadline: December 3rd
CHICAGO – With the holidays upon us, U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and U.S. Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.-11) today joined with student veterans at DePaul University to highlight the fast approaching U.S. Postal Service mailing deadline to send care packages to U.S. troops stationed in the Middle East.
“This is the season of giving, and we must not forget the brave service members who sacrifice so much for our freedom” Sen. Kirk said. “Every American should make a conscious effort to support them in anyway possible.”
“Having served a few tours overseas, getting something in the mail from home – whether it was a letter or package – always reminded me that my family and friends back in the States were thinking of me,” Rep. Kinzinger said. “Our courageous men and women forgo spending the holidays with their loved ones to answer the call of duty and put their life at risk for the sake of all Americans. We must be especially mindful to show our gratitude for their sacrifice during the holiday season. Their fortitude is the reason for our liberty.”

A thank you to our veterans for the sacrifices they’ve made in the name of freedom featuring comments from Rick Perry, Ted Cruz, Don Stenberg, Dan Liljenquist, and Adam Hasner.
Freedom Works debuted this great video for Veteran’s Day while we were in Denver this past weekend. It is now up at Youtube and, even though the holiday is past, I thought I’d feature the video today.
The idea for Cooking With the Troops grew out of a joint event between Bob Miller and C. Blake Powers. Bob Miller began doing barbecues at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 2005, and Blake Powers began doing food events as a result of his first embed in Iraq in 2007, working through the charity Soldiers’ Angels. Bob suggested doing a joint event at Malogne House at Walter Reed, with Bob and his volunteers doing a barbecue and to be followed by a dessert bar afterwards.

It has been a tough few decades for high-end military procurement, for sure. Promising projects, hardware, weapons systems, trains, planes, and automobiles — not to mention numerous boats — have been started, millions spent on them, only to be unceremoniously cancelled due to those pernicious political whirlwinds. Our nation has an aging military infrastructure and we are losing ground to other nations.
But one project looks to have weathered those whirlwinds. That would be the F-35 Lightening II fighter jet. And this one is a must for national security, too.
I was happy to have been invited to a presentation of the F-35 in Rockford, Illinois put on by Lockheed Martin. There I heard about the F-35 from its development team, I heard from two Illinois congressmen, and was fortunate enough to have had a chance to fly the cockpit simulator (very fun, by the way).
As it happens, Illinois supplies quite a few parts and computer systems for the F-35, so a demonstration in Illinois was a very apt locale.
The new F-35 is already undergoing flight tests at various bases across the country and the military is training pilots to fly them as we speak. I keep saying “the military” and not the Air Force for a specific reason. This is not just a Navy plane, nor is it solely an Air Force or a Marine fighter. In fact, one of the reasons this project has survived the budget cutter’s axe is because it satisfies more than one role of a new fighter required by our military.
