Obama: Country Would Be ‘Better Off’ If More Worked for Government

-By Warner Todd Huston

President Obama loves him some big government policies, we all know, but now he’s saying that just about everyone should work for the government and if they did the economy would be “better off.” So, who would pay all the taxes if everyone made a living FROM those taxes? He doesn’t seem to have an answer to that one.

In a July 29 speech on the economy, President Obama claimed that the country would be better off if the federal government and local city, county and state governments would hire more people.

Obama made these absurd comments at the Amazon.com Shipping Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a speech that is part of his re-re-re-pivot to the economy and jobs. You know, because he’s been soooo successful with those efforts in the past.

Obama carped that cities like Chicago laid off “700,000 workers at the federal, state and local levels of government lost their jobs.” But this is no less because those cities and governments face a budget doomsday over all the undeserved union demands in pay, pensions and benefits they were doused with in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. Now that those undeserved bills forced on taxpayers by government union thugs is coming due, many cities around the country have laid off workers and put a freeze on more hiring. Obama is upset at this.

Democrats Want to Give the IRS Even More $$ in Budget!

-By Warner Todd Huston

Even after the IRS has proven to be a tool of the left-wing attack machine instead of merely being a non-partisan taxing agency like it should be, after we’ve all learned that the IRS is a giant bottomless pit of wasteful spending, and after we’ve learned that the IRS has essentially become a satellite office of the Obama perpetual campaign machine, NOW we fid out that the Democrats want to make the IRS budget even bigger!

Well, I guess it makes perfect sense since it is the Democrat Party using the IRS like a part of its war machine aimed against the business sector, Republicans and the Tea Party, right?

So, according to The Hill newspaper, Democrats are pushing a Financial Services subcommittee bill to raise IRS funding to $12.07 billion. This is an increase of 276.6 million buckaroos.

U.S. Post Office Looking to Stop Mail-to-Your-Door Delivery

-By Warner Todd Huston

The U.S. Post Office is loosing money every day it operates, but one cost-cutting measure being proposed is to end having mail delivered to American homes.

The Post Office is proposing “centralized delivery,” instead of to-your-door delivery. Here homeowners would go pick up their mail at a bank of P.O. boxes, or “cluster boxes,” instead of having a mailman deliver mail to each individual home.

These cluster boxes where mail for a housing development could be delivered to a central location is similar to the way apartments receive mail with boxes located in the building lobby.

This system of mail delivery is already growing at industrial parks and the Post Office is urging all new industrial parks to adopt cluster box delivery at the outset.

The Postal Service is losing upwards to $25 million a day as more communication goes to the Internet and it is estimated by 2016 that the Post Office will have a debt of over $92 billion unless something is done now to prevent that. The service lost $16 billion in 2012 and exhausted its $15 billion line of credit from the U.S. Treasury.

Anti-Obamacare Ad to Air During ‘Saturday Night Live’

-By Warner Todd Huston

A new ad slamming Obamacare will air during NBC’s long-running comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live, says YG Network, a conservative advocacy group.

YG Network is calling its ad “The Sell” and portrays an advertising team trying desperately to find way to sell the “really unpopular” law to the American people. “We’re supposed to sell this junk?” one character laments.

The piece ends with the team exultant that no matter what they do they’ll get millions of taxpayer dollars to fund their work. A voice over at the end tells viewers to “Tell President Obama to stop the sell. We’re not buying it.”

The ad campaign features the Twitter hashtag, #stopthesell.

YG Network says its ad will also air during NBC’s Meet the Press and several prime-time programs such as America’s Got Talent.

In part, these ads are in response to the big ad push that Obama has initiated, too. Obama is spending billions of our tax dollars to push Obamacare. Of course, this all raises the question: if Obamacare is so great, why is Obama still spending billions of our tax dollars to sell it to us?

Obama-Created Healthcare Call Center Hires for Part Time, Pays no Healthcare Benefits

-By Warner Todd Huston

So, here is an amusing one: Obama created a call center for Americans to call in and find out about how Obamacare will “help” them out. But the call center is stocked with mostly part time jobs and isn’t paying any healthcare benefits to its employees.

As Eliana Johnson notes at NRO’s The Corner, “Obama administration announced last month that it is setting up a call center that will be accessible to Americans 24 hours a day” so that Americans could call in with questions about the President’s government takeover of our healthcare system.

But contrary to what the President has said he wants–more full time jobs and healthcare for everyone–the new jobs in his call center will have neither.

Obamaphone Company Launches Ad Blitz to Sell Obamaphone Program

-By Warner Todd Huston

A new advertising campaign meant to save the reputation of the much-derided “Obamaphone” is underway.

Some of you may recall the 2012 video of that wacky woman ebullient that President Obama was giving out free “Obamaphones” to minorities and that, she said, is why we should all vote for him?

Well, since then the real program this woman was babbling about has come under fire.

Tracfone, one of the companies that gets hundreds of millions from the federal government and phone companies to run the program, is now launching an advertisement campaign to help protect the program.

Texas Planned Parenthood Abortion Mill Defrauded Medicaid to Tune of $1.4 Million

-By Warner Todd Huston

In Texas, abortion mill operators Planned Parenthood has been found to have defrauded Medicaid to the tune of $1.4 million and is being ordered to repay the stolen money.

In 2012, a former employee of Planned Parenthood’s Gulf Coast offices filed a whistleblower’s complaint with the Attorney General of Texas and the U.S. Department of Justice. The whistleblower alleged that Planned Parenthood engaged in an elaborate Medicaid fraud scheme.

The whistleblower, Karen Reynolds, submitted internal memos and other records to prove that PP engaged in a “systemwide scheme to bilk Medicaid, Title XX, and the Women’s Health Program of tens of millions of dollars over the course of at least a decade.”

Reynolds charged that PP indulged a long running practice of billing for medial services that were never performed. PP also altered records to make it seem as if abortions provided were actually other medical services and not abortions.

The whistleblower also said that PP would load visitors up with condoms, vaginal film, and other give-aways and would then charge Medicaid for the products.

Video: A Test Case That Is Proving Free Markets Beat Government Regulations

-By Seton Motley, Founder and President of Less Government

Fire Island is a tiny New York hamlet of about 200 full-time residents. Whose 1930s old-school land line phone connections were wiped out by Hurricane Sandy.

So wireless companies are — rather than rebuilding the very expensive, woefully outdated connections they had — switching them to a brand new, cutting edge Internet Protocol (IP) system.

This format is much, much better than the old-school system — in large part because it is far less regulated than the old-school system.

So the Left — which relies on regulatory regimes to impose their failed worldview and for their very existence — are freaking out.

All of this, and more, is explained in this guerrilla video.

Please, enjoy.

Joint Statement by Illinois House GOP Caucus on President Obama’s Jobs Speech in Galesburg

Illinois House Republicans Peter Roskam (IL-6), Rodney Davis (IL-13), Randy Hultgren (IL-14), John Shimkus (IL-15), Adam Kinzinger (IL-16), and Aaron Schock (IL-18) issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s speech in Galesburg, IL:

“Today, President Obama made his 19th pivot back to what has always been most important to Americans, jobs and the economy. With its 9.2% unemployment rate, full-blown budget crisis and sky-high taxes, our shared home state of Illinois is an example of government making all the wrong economic choices. However, no amount of presidential pivots and speechmaking will change the fact that too many Illinoisans are out of work. It doesn’t have to be this way.

“House Republicans have never strayed from our focus on creating jobs and strengthening our economy. We are developing a tax reform package for individuals and businesses that would increase American competitiveness in the global economy. We have passed a jobs and skills training package, approved the Keystone XL Pipeline, acted to protect families and individuals from a costly healthcare law and put forth a plan to permanently fix our student loan crisis. These proposals would immediately and demonstrably boost the economy, and set the foundation for long-term growth. We agree with the president, too many Americans are struggling in today’s economy, and we stand ready to work toward real, bipartisan solutions, not listen to another stump speech.”

Rocker Ted Nugent Rips Democrats for Fall of Detroit

-By Warner Todd Huston

Rock legend and conservative gadfly Ted Nugent told TMZ that he is “shattered but not at all surprised” that the liberals have destroyed his beloved city of Detroit.

As we all know, Detroit is filing for bankruptcy after 5 decades of Democrat Party rule.

Meanwhile, our bailed out auto industry is now outsourcing to China! Nice, eh?

Of course, Ted is called “the Motor City Madman,” so he has long ties to that once powerful American metropolis. But the liberals have reduced the city to a pile of burning rubble befitting as a backdrop for a WWII movie set in Dresden, Germany, as opposed to a great American city.

One Way Liberals are Just Like Radical Islamists

-By Warner Todd Huston

With the bankruptcy of Detroit in the news, a recent compilation of the many failures of the Motor City reveals one stat that shows how liberals are similar to radical Islamists at least in as much as they want to keep their people illiterate, stupid and easily controlled.

Tyler Durden of Zero Hedge blog has a very disheartening post titled, “25 Facts About The Fall Of Detroit That Will Leave You Shaking Your Head,” and aside from giving us a perfect example of how liberal policies are an abject failure in every case, it also shows one stat that proves an essentially evil aspect of liberalism.

His point number nine is this: “An astounding 47 percent of the residents of the city of Detroit are functionally illiterate.” (Durden cited CBS Detroit for his stat.)

Correspondingly, upwards to 70 percent of the Muslim world cannot read.

Detroit Bankruptcy: Motor City Becomes Tap City

-By Warner Todd Huston

Ruins of Detroit after decades of Democrat control

Well, the bills have come due and Detroit has gone from Motor City to Tap City declaring bankruptcy, the largest U.S. city to ever do so. This is what Barack Obama wants to turn the whole country into, folks.

Not long ago the state of Michigan passed a law to give power over troubled city budgets to what is called “an emergency financial manager” and Detroit had been under the guidance of EFM Kevyn Orr for some time. But Orr has essentially admitted defeat by recommending that the former auto-making powerhouse file for Chapter 9 protection.

Orr reported to the state legislature that the city was upwards to $20 billion (yeah, “billion” with a “b”) in debt and that it wasn’t possible to make good on that debt.

(Meanwhile, our bailed out auto industry is now outsourcing to China! Nice, eh?)

In a letter appended to the filing, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder said, “The citizens of Detroit need and deserve a clear road out of the cycle of ever-decreasing services.”

New York Times Attacking Messenger Over Anti-Obamacare Ads

-By Warner Todd Huston

All the mud-slinging that’s fit to print is apparently The New York Times’ revised motto if a recent editorial attacking a pair of video ads that raise questions about Obamacare is any indication as the Times decides to spend half its editorial attacking the character of some donors to the group that put out the ads instead of sticking to the issues.

The ads were put out by Americans for Prosperity, a group that counts as donors a pair of famous conservative brothers that serve as the left’s biggest boogiemen: the Koch brothers.

The Times spends its first four paragraphs attacking the Kochs on a personal level. Calling them liars, employing class warfare against them, and saying–get out your tinfoil hat, here–they hide their real agenda because it is just soooo evil.

In fact, I almost feel compelled to spell Koch Brothers with a capital “B” in brothers as the phrase has become a noun to the left in their effort to demonize the pair. And, interestingly, as the Times spends so much energy on excoriating the conservative philanthropists it must be noted that the pair are not in control of the ads or their content. The ads were put out by Americans for Prosperity, a group to which the Kochs are but donors–major donors, sure, but not wholly controlling donors.

Oh, the paper does finally get to refuting some of the points in the two AFP ads, but even there they unleash liberal trope instead of cogent analysis.

But as the “paper of record” falls all over itself to take Obamacare’s promises at face value without spending much effort to really looking at the facts, even President Obama’s own administration has lost confidence in the federal takeover of our healthcare system.

One Photo Shows The difference Between Failed Gov’t & Successful Businesses

-By Warner Todd Huston

Illinois Congressman Peter Roskam (R,IL) recently posted a photo on his Facebook page that really highlights the failure of government.

Roskam posted the photo with the headline “Government monopoly vs. private sector. Just sayin’.”

And take a look to see how right he is…

Here we have a dilapidated, rusting U.S. Post Office Box standing in a line with a gleaming new Fed Ex drop off box and a UPS drop off box.

The difference between a hidebound, failing U.S. Post Office as evinced in its rusting hulk of a post box compared to the bright, shining boxes from the privately run delivery companies is stark, indeed.

Rep. Bachmann: Finish Border Fence Before Immigration Reform

-By Warner Todd Huston

USA Today recently put a negative spin on Minnesota Republican Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann’s position about the so-called “Gang of Eight’s” immigration reform bill, characterizing her point as a mere attempt to “kill the immigration overhaul,” yet her points were more nuanced than that.

The paper claims that Bachmann “contends immigrants who came to the United States illegally shouldn’t be rewarded with legal status” and went on to note that she opposes any of the current ideas being floated for immigration reform.

But Bachmann has not said that she doesn’t ever want to deal with the millions of illegal immigrants in the U.S., but that she simply wants to secure the border before any further discussion on what to do with those immigrants is had.

Networks Do 92 New Global Warming Stories, Don’t Mention Lull in Temp Trends Once

-By Warner Todd Huston

The news departments at the Big Three TV networks have done 92 new stories on the global warming debate recently, but, curiously, not one of those stories informed viewers that there has been decade-long lull in rising temperatures.

A new Media Research Center review of network news coverage shows that ABC, CBS, and NBC have each completely ignored the 10-year “mystery plateau” in global temperatures in favor of alarmism about rising sea levels, allergies, and extreme weather.

The MRC review found that no network climate change story thus far for 2013 has reported the slowdown in global warming. It also discovered that “experts” that promote alarmism were quoted or featured in network coverage eight times as often as those critical of global warming. It also found that links between extreme weather and global warming were made nearly one-fourth of the time despite that scientists disagree with that notion.

Washington’s ‘Newseum’ to Host Al Jazeera Studios

-By Warner Todd Huston

Media broadcaster Al Jazeera is owned by the Nation of Qatar, a Muslim country whose legislature operates mainly upon Sharia law. Since the mid 19th century Qatar has been entirely controlled by the monarchical Al Thani family. Today, Al Jazeera’s new American cable news network will broadcast out of the “Newseum,” an organization dedicated to freedom, liberty, and the First Amendment situated only blocks from the capitol building in Washington D.C.

“Is there anything wrong with that picture?” asks Claudia Rosett in a recent Weekly Standard piece.

When it opened in 2008 in downtown D.C., the Newseum celebrated its focus on Americanism, the Constitution, the history of journalism, and the First Amendment. Now it is hosting a network from a nation that holds to no such niceties. Al Jazeera, as it happens, is entirely owned by the Qatari state and is not a free media outlet.

Since the oil-rich nation bought out environmental guru Al Gore’s cable TV network to host Al Jazeera’s new American outlet, we have been told it will be “independent” and allowed to follow the news anywhere it take them.

That remains to be seen, of course. We cannot know what the future will hold for the sort of journalism that Al Jazeera will practice.

Bank Insecurity: Your Money is at Risk Through Cyber Theft

-By Warner Todd Huston

We all, individuals and businesses alike, have this basic assumption that when we put our money in a bank it is safe. But is it? Apparently not so much as the experience of small business TRC indicates when hackers reached into the company’s California-based bank account and drained it of nearly $300 thousand. Worse, the bank and CEO Dennis R. Woods is claiming no responsibility for the security in their own bank!

Jon Fleischman of California’s premier political blog The Flash Report recently updated his readers to the ongoing lawsuit in this tale of cyber theft.

In 2011 cyber hackers out of Eastern Europe broke into the accounts of California’s United Security Bank (USB) and drained almost $600 thousand from the accounts of TRC Operating Company (TRC) out of Kern County, California. It happened over a weekend when the bank was shutting down for Sunday and nobody noticed for days.

Poll: Words Like ‘Incompetent’ and ‘Liar’ Most Used to Describe Obama

-By Warner Todd Huston

Pew Polling firm has found an interesting change in the way President Obama is being described with the use of words like “incompetent” and “liar” on the rise.

The latest Pew poll finds that one-word impressions of Obama are turning negative more often than they have in the past. Until now, Pew says, these wholly negative one-word impressions were “rare.”

The survey finds that the one-word impressions people have of Obama have changed a great deal throughout his presidency. Terms like incompetent and liar now are among the most frequently used words to describe Obama. In April 2009, when his job approval was at 63%, these words were rare.

Pew also found that the word “socialist” is used in nearly the same proportion as it has been used since he first took office, showing that the President has not succeeded in knocking down the perception that he is a socialist.

The President is also viewed negatively on civil liberties.

Report: Top IRS Aides Visited White House 300 Times

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last month many were questioning why Internal Revenue Service chief Douglas Shulman had visited the White House so often. Now, despite claims that there was no coordination between the White House and the IRS, a new report indicates that Shulman’s top aide visited the President’s residence perhaps as often as 300 times.

In May after news broke that the IRS had intimidated conservative and Tea Party groups trying to obtain an official tax status, reporters began to look into the activities of IRS chief Douglas Shulman. It wasn’t long before news emerged that Shulman appears on the White House visitor logs nearly 200 times.

This high number of visits occurred despite that the fact that both Shulman and President Obama claimed to have no knowledge of the IRS intimidation tactics. Both also said there was no coordination between the IRS and the White House.

Officials at the IRS and President Obama still maintain that there was no coordination between the White House and the IRS, of course, but this latest revelation makes that still harder to believe.

Buzzfeed Sued Over Unauthorized Use of Photo

-By Warner Todd Huston

It is one of the dangers of the Internet age and Buzzfeed is only the latest website to find itself being taken to court, sued for $3.67 million for using a photograph without the permission of the original owner of the image.

While perusing the Internet, photographer Kai Eiselein stumbled across one of Buzzfeed’s ubiquitous photo essay lists, one titled “The 30 Funniest Header Faces.” The entry from 2010 gathered 30 images of soccer players caught by the camera lens making funny faces while butting heads against a soccer ball.

Eiselein was perturbed, though, to find one of his own photographs featured as one of the 30 amusing images Buzzfeed used. The photog was perturbed because he had uploaded the image to his Flickr feed and taken the time to note on all his images that his photos were “All Rights Reserved” in an effort to keep people from stealing them. As it happens, Buzzfeed simply took the image and never contacted Eiselein for permission to use the image.

Eiselein sent Buzzfeed a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown notice and the site quickly acceded to his demand. So, upon visiting the Buzzfeed page in question now, visitors are greeted with “The 29 Funniest Header Faces.”

One American Farm Bureau Federation Official’s Trouble With English

-By Warner Todd Huston

Everyone is talking about the bloated, money-wasting farm bill that failed to pass the House last week. But Dale Moore, one interested party, is all about the discussion being the “penultimate”… something or the other.

Moore is the executive director of public policy at the American Farm Bureau and one must hope he got to that exalted position because he knows farming because he certainly doesn’t seem to know anything about the English language.

In a report in the D.C.-based newspaper The Hill, Moore made to add his oh-so-important contribution to the discussion of the failed farm bill.

Moore was talking to the paper about whether or not the GOP can make another stab at passing the bill. Amusingly, the newspaper quoted this dunce verbatim:

“There’s the penultimate question, and candidly I’m not sure” of the answer, Moore said.

What? “Penultimate”?

Mr. Moore, do you even know what the word “penultimate” means? It means “second to last.” But here Moore uses it like it is the word “ultimate.”

Moron.

Dale Moore is typical of the hapless know-nothings we have in D.C. But Mr. Moore’s ill-educated attempt to sound important aside, this whole debate is proof of exactly what is wrong with the fetid swamp we call Washington DC.

A bill goes down in flames? The people stand against it? Votes are impossible to come by? No worries, just figure out how to “salvage” it and pass it anyway in a different form and when no one is watching. No bad idea ever dies in D.C. It just gets passed under a different name.

This monstrosity parading as a farm bill should not just be retooled. It should be thrown in the trash and not revisited.

Politico Uses Glenn Beck Against GOP On IRS Protest

-By Warner Todd Huston

For Politico, the news about the hundreds of Tea Party protestors in Washington DC on Wednesday, June 19, wasn’t so much about why the protesters were upset, but how it affected the “bipartisan approach” to the House IRS probe. And Politico seemed to blame Glenn Beck for the strain.

Politico reported that hundreds of Tea Party supporters took to the U.S. Capitol lawn Wednesday to protest the IRS in a rally sponsored by conservative activist and radio host Glenn Beck, but the Internet newser quickly turned its attention away from the protests and to the House Ways and Means Committee’s IRS probe.

Politico reported that Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.) was one of those invited by Beck to address the protest and this, they worried, would “upend the bipartisan approach” to the IRS probe.

Public Trust in Newspapers Falls to New Lows

-By Warner Todd Huston

A new poll on newspapers and television news shows that Americans’ confidence in the news industry continues to erode in this era of mass communications, reaching a low not seen since 2007.

The Gallup polling firm finds that trust in newspapers has fallen to 23 percent. This is down from 25 percent in 2012 and 28 percent in 2011.

The previous low was recorded in 2007 when trust in newspapers reached 22 percent.

Trust in newspapers has undergone steady erosion since its 1979 high of 51 percent, Gallup reports.

Television news fares no better in the estimation of those polled by Gallup. Trust in TV news tied that of newspapers with 23 percent saying they trust TV news sources. This is down from a 1993 high of 46 percent–when Gallup first began asking about it.

CBS’s Scott Pelley Thinks Fox News Has Few Viewers

In a recent interview, CBS Evening News host Scott Pelley said that he thinks that Fox News really doesn’t have very many viewers–underestimating the network’s actual ratings by about 90 percent.

Pelley told Deadline Hollywood that Fox might have perhaps as few as “200,000 viewers.”

Deadline asked Pelley what he thought of the cable news outlets that cater to “just one segment of the political spectrum in their reporting.”

“Certainly. It’s no surprise,” Pelley replied. “Fox is associated with the right and MSNBC is associated with the left and they’ve done that because it is a business model. It’s a strategy. They’ve decided to bite off one small part of the viewership and be happy with that 200,000 viewers, 300,000 viewers that they have.”

Obama Claims He Doesn’t Want to ‘Tax All Businesses Out of Business’

-By Warner Todd Huston

During a recent fundraiser, President Obama told an audience that he and the Democrats don’t want to tax all business out of business. He also said he doesn’t believe in “top down” government.

The President made these comments at a private residence in Palo Alto, California during a Democratic Senatorial campaign fundraiser in the first week of June.

“I know that there are a few Republicans here in the audience,” he said to those gathered. “If you talk to us, it turns out, you know, we’re pretty common-sense folks.”

“We don’t think government can do everything. We don’t think that top-down solutions are the right way to go. We believe in the free market. We believe in a light touch when it comes to regulations. We don’t want to tax all businesses out of business. But we do think that there’s a role to play for government.”

Barack Obama has made this claim many times on the hustings, but his actions have often been at odds with this campaign rhetoric.
