Senator Ron Johnson on The Budget and the Debate in Wisconsin

-By Warner Todd Huston

Recently I was part of a conference call with Senator Ron Johnson (R, Wis). Johnson is a member of the GOP wave that over took Washington in the 2010 midterms. In a surprise to many, Johnson defeated long-time Wisconsin Senator, Democrat Russ Feingold.

My first question was one that I have also asked Chief Deputy Whip of the House Peter Roskam. I wondered what Johnson’s position was on the idea of states declaring bankruptcy.

Johnson said that he agrees with Roskam that state should not be allowed to declare bankruptcy. “I totally agree with Peter Roskam. There’s no way the federal government should be called upon to bail out states that have been irresponsible in terms of their spending, that haven’t made the tough choices in their jurisdictions… I would definitely oppose the bailing out of any states”

2012 GOP Hopefuls: Herman Cain

-By Warner Todd Huston

For most Americans the question isn’t whether or not Herman Cain would make a good president but is, rather, “who the heck is Herman Cain?” Well, let this serve as your introduction to the businessman, turned radio talk-show host, turned 2012 GOP hopeful.

Cain has been a Tea Party mainstay since the early days of the movement and can give a heck of a rally speech. He’s able to easily invoke good business sense, low taxes, Tea Party principles, and highly patriotic themes in speeches that always brings conservatives to their feet in applause. But outside the Tea Party circuit he’s not as well known.

Cain is a little beter known in Atlanta, Georgia, at least by 300,000 listeners of WSB radio where he hosted a radio show for several years (until Feb. of 2011). From this platform Cain got involved as a Tea Party speaker.

His earlier life, though, is what he points to as his proving grounds making him qualified for being president…

The Arrogance and Hate From Congressional Democrats

-By Warner Todd Huston

My friend Kerry Picket of the Washington times was involved in a little tête-à-tête with a foul-tempered, arrogant Democrat member of congress that is just so typical of how these hatemongers on the left attempt to shut down debate, call conservatives racists, and act like petulant children in general that it must be highlighted.

Picket interviewed Democrat Al Green of Texas after a recent Homeland Security committee meeting last week. At that meeting, Green absurdly claimed that the KKK was just as dangerous at al Qaeda and insisted that all this worrying over radical Islam was misplaced.

Picket tried to engage this distempered fool on the subject after the meeting and his hectoring, overbearing, dissociative reply was something to behold.

Clinton Blasts Obama’s Foot Dragging on Oil Drilling Permits

-By Warner Todd Huston

Interestingly at the end of last week during the IHS CERAWeek conference held in Houston, Texas, former President Bill Clinton said that Obama’s constant delays on issuing offshore oil drilling permits was “ridiculous.” With this one might be able to claim that Bill Clinton is a “drill, baby, drill” booster, just like Sarah Palin!

Politico is reporting that Bill Clinton agreed with fellow speaker former President George W. Bush on many of his points concerning the oil and gas industry and agreed that the hurdles that Obama’s government have been thrown up before them are ill advised.

“Bush said all the things you’d expect him to say” on oil and gas issues, said Jim Noe, senior vice president at Hercules Offshore and executive director of the pro-drilling Shallow Water Energy Security Coalition. But Clinton added, “You’d be surprised to know that I agree with all that,” according to Noe and others in the room…

Clinton said there are “ridiculous delays in permitting when our economy doesn’t need it,” according to Noe and others.

Chicago Tea Party: We Won The Ronald Reagan Award

From the Chicago Tea Party…

We are very proud and humbled to tell you that the Chicago Tea Party Patriots were honored with the Ronald Reagan Award at CPAC 2011 in Washington, DC. The Ronald Reagan Award is CPAC’s highest honor and we’re one of only four tea party groups in the entire country to receive it. This is a group award recognizing all of your efforts over the past year. Congratulations to everyone.

CPAC says of the award: “From the beginning, the annual Ronald Reagan Award is given not to the generals of the movement, but to the soldiers, the men and women working in the trenches who sacrificed, and in so doing set an example for others. In past years, the award – which is our highest – has gone to grassroots organizers, taxpayer advocates, and those whose names may not be household names, but whose work has affected us all.” The American Conservative Union is the nation’s oldest and largest grassroots conservative organization and their CPAC conference is the largest annual gathering of conservatives.

Obama Doubles Down on Socialist Appointee

-By Warner Todd Huston

Democratic leadership has been reported to have “cooled” on support of Dr. Donald Berwick, Obama’s appointee to run Medicare and Medicaid. The Senate has decided not to take up Berwick’s appointment because of Berwick’s controversial, socialist ideology. But Barack Obama has doubled down on his support of the Euro-loving Doc and given Berwick another recess appointment despite his far left, out of touch policy ideas.

Berwick is now well known for saying that the U.S. “must redistribute the wealth” in its administration of government healthcare systems. His sentiment is far, far outside the mainstream of American opinion. Statements such as this have caused even Democrats in the Senate to shy from his appointment. But not Obama…

ILL Gov. Quinn Signs the Boot Out Internet Companies Law

-By Warner Todd Huston

Illinois’ Democrat Governor Pat Quinn has signed the so-called Mainstreet Fairness Bill brought to him by the Illinois General Assembly. The bill forces all Internet companies to charge Illinois’ 6.25% sales tax whether they are based in the state or not.

Quinn signed the bill in the last few days before it would have gone into force anyway.

The nation’s largest Internet-based business, Amazon, com, said it would cut ties with all its affiliates in Illinois if the bill became law. No word if they are following through on that threat, yet, but Amazon has cut ties in some states that have instituted similar laws — though it has stayed in other states that have done so, New York in particular.

Several Illinois-based Internet companies have warned the state that if the bill became law they would pull up stakes and leave the state.

VIDEO: Interview With Chief Dep. Whip, Congressman Peter Roskam

-By Warner Todd Huston

Illinois Congressman Peter Roskam (R, 6th District) has really climbed the ladder of leadership since the 2010 elections. He went from Congressman in the minority party in DC to the Chief Deputy Whip of the majority Republican Party riding the GOP wave that overtook the Hill last November.

Roskam is the go-to man for the budget debate. He handles this like an expert and, with his role of Chief Dep. Whip, is part of the leadership team. But I peg him as one of the best guys on that team where it concerns the budget.

Some of the things he’s talking about here are already in play, but the one thing I’d like to focus on are his comments on regulations and the idea of states trying to file for bankruptcy.

Illinois GOP Amends Bylaws on SCC Elections

From the Illinois GOP

The State Central Committee of the Illinois Republican Party amended their bylaws yesterday to resolve a long-standing issue with regard to voting open precincts in the election of State Central Committeemen.

The amendment addressed the issue of allocation of votes from precincts that do not have elected Republican Precinct Committeemen. Prior to the amendment, Republican Party County Chairmen had the ability to cast the votes of the vacant precincts however they pleased. The amendment changed this rule by mandating that upon the election of State Central Committeemen, the weighted vote of the vacant precincts “shall be allocated to each candidate based on the proportion of weighted votes they received from the elected Precinct Committeemen.”

What Do You Think? Gas Prices – Caused by Libya? Boutique Fuels?‏

From the office of Senator Mark Kirk (R, ILL…

Gasoline prices are up 50 cents per gallon just this month, now averaging $3.65 in Illinois. Why are prices so high?

While much of the price rise is caused by instability in Libya, another cause is an obscure federal rule that mandates little gasoline monopolies in Chicagoland and Metro East, called the “Boutique Fuels Rule.”

The federal government divides the nation’s gasoline market into 17 separate zones, each with their own recipe for gasoline. While we can buy regular gasoline in Peoria, only “N RFG with Ethanol” is available in Chicago and in Metro East, we can only buy “7.2 RVP” gas. If one region runs short, it cannot borrow from another region – is it any wonder that gas costs 10 cents less per gallon in Green Bay?

This map illustrates the isolated pockets of the country where the federal government mandates the use of the complicated boutique fuel rule. This balkanization of fuel distribution leads to supply problems and high prices. Conversely, some say the regulation is necessary for compliance with the Clean Air Act.

Study: Tea Partiers, Unions Share Common Core Values

From the Sam Adams Alliance

insightsLab Reports from Protest in Madison

CHICAGO — Today, insightsLab, the research arm of Sam Adams Alliance (SAM) released a new study showing that both Tea Partiers and a segment of Madison, WI, union protestors share similar core values. The study, which is the first of its kind, was conducted during the height of the Wisconsin budget battle and delved into the values and motivations of union protestors. The research determined two core segments of people among the Madison protestors, “Operatives” and “Idealists,” based on qualitative in-depth market research interviews conducted with “brand champion” protestors.

“This study is significant because it shows where the Tea Partiers and unions can meet in the middle and find common ground,” said Yvonne Ralsky, executive director of SAM. “The research team at insightsLab didn’t expect to discover that the passions of the Tea Partiers and Unions transcend policy positions or politics, and motivate people to activism.”

URF Releases 2010 Scorecard

From the United Republican Fund of Illinois…

WINFIELD, IL – The United Republican Fund (URF) has released their 2010 Scorecard for members of the Illinois Legislature, and it shows a disappointing drop in URF LIFT Leaders compared to 2009 with four fewer LIFT Leaders in the House and two fewer in the Senate. However, the URF is optimistic for the future of Illinois with the election in 2010 of several strong conservatives and with the improvement in the lifetime scores of a number of legislators.

“This past session saw several bills passed, including a massive tax hike on families and businesses, that run contrary to our LIFT principles and are bad for the people of Illinois,” said Mike Uremovich, President of the URF. “We call on the Ninety-Seventh General Assembly to heed the growing voice of conservatives in Illinois and across the country. We will be watching and encouraging legislators to vote accordingly.”

In Face of Death Threats, Wisc. GOP Passes Curb on Unions

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last night we reported that the Wisconsin State Senate separated from the budget bill the curbs on government unions that Governor Scott Walker campaigned on achieving and passed it out of committee for a vote by the full Senate. Today, in a smashing success for Wisconsin Republicans, the senate voted on the union curb bill and passed it. And all this in the face of death threats and attempted mob rule by Democrats and their union thug masters.

The final vote count was 53 in favor and 42 opposed. Four Republicans broke ranks with the leadership and voted with the Democrats, but the bill still goes to Gov. Walker’s desk for his signature and will then become law.

In a statement, Walker said, “I applaud all members of the Assembly for showing up, debating the legislation and participating in democracy. Their action will save jobs, protect taxpayers, reform government, and help balance the budget. Moving forward we will continue to focus on ensuring Wisconsin has a business climate that allows the private sector to create 250,000 new jobs.”

Lack of Leadership: France Takes Lead in Libya While Obama Fiddles

-By Warner Todd Huston

You know that an American administration has proven useless and ineffective for supporting liberty and freedom in oppressed countries when even France… France… takes the lead in recognizing a struggling, independent liberty movement. Such is the case in Libya where French President Nicolas Sarkozy has recognized and supported the Libyan rebels struggling to over throw Libyan dictator Gaddhafi.

For his part, President Obama, the man that is supposed to be fulfilling the role of the “leader of the free world” is attending school bullying pressers and secretly supporting fleebagging Democrats in Wisconsin while practically turning a blind eye to the Libyan rebels fighting for their lives.

So France takes the lead in coming to the aid of freedom.

At least the GOP has been civil during this whole debate. This is not something that the wild-eyed, hatemongers on the left of the union thugs can say. Unions: Losing friends all around
By Nina Easton, Fortune/CNN Money

As Barack Obama stood on that frigid inaugural stage in 2009, labor leaders could envisage the glorious future awaiting them. Here, at last, was a President determined to help unions rebuild their sagging ranks by supporting a “card check” bill that would change the way unions are allowed to organize workers. Here was a President who openly criticized fellow Democrat Bill Clinton for signing the North American Free Trade Agreement. And here was a President who would put government health care for the uninsured at the center of his agenda.

Two years later card check is dead, Obama is out promoting free-trade deals, and his health care reform plan — passed without a government option — faces an uncertain future in the courts. And now a costly new front has opened in labor’s struggles: the states, where budget-cutting governors are targeting union salaries, benefits, and even collective-bargaining rights.

Not even the most union-friendly President in three decades can soften this harsh political terrain — a problem sure to vex his 2012 reelection bid…..

Dueling Union Bills in DC

-By Warner Todd Huston

First Congressional Democrats offered a national forced unionzation bill, and now Republicans have countered by putting forth a national worker’s freedom bill. With the luck breaking against unions in Wisconsin and the issue in an uproar in Ohio and Indiana it is now surprise that Congress has come to loggerheads with the same issue.

On Tuesday eight Republicans introduced the National Right to Work Act. Senator Jim DeMint says that he hopes it will, “reduce workplace discrimination by protecting the free choice of individuals to form, join, or assist labor organizations, or to refrain from such activities.”

Unions are less than 8 percent of the work force at this point yet those states that have more union members than others are doing less well. DeMint says that having unions is part of the problem.

Wash. Post’s Ezra Klein Absolves Radical Islam, ‘Young Christians’ Perpetrate ‘School Shootings’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Journolister and Washington Post writer Ezra Klein is another one of those liberals in the elite Old Media trying to pretend that there is no Islam in terrorism these days. He’s also another one of those who, in the face of reality, hyperbolically say that Christians are somehow just as prone to terrorism as Muslims. If only he could find any of that terrorism, he might have some veracity on the issue.

Oh, Klein is desperately trying to find that Christian terrorism no matter how wild a stretch it is, sure enough. Like President Obama and his Deputy National Security Advisor, Denis McDonough, Klein is trying to take criminal acts unconnected to religion perpetrated by Americans and morph them into “Christian terrorism.”

On MSNBCs Morning Joe for March 7, Klein tied himself into knots of illogic in order to absolve radical Islam for the thousands of acts of terrorism perpetrated over the last 50 or so years.

Roskam: Senate Continues The Status-Quo

From the Office of Illinois Congressman Peter Roskam (R, 6th District)…

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Peter Roskam (R-IL), Chief Deputy Whip, issued the following statement after the two Senate votes on the Continuing Resolution:

“Today’s votes show a great contrast between those willing to do something meaningful for long-term job creation and those committed to Washington’s status-quo. House Republicans have already passed a serious proposal to responsibly fund the government while cutting back spending to pre-stimulus, pre-2008 levels. In contrast, Senate Democrats created a status-quo spending bill and then ‘drew a line in the sand’ against negotiating any more cuts. We need to find common ground to keep the government running while meaningfully cutting spending – it’s long past time Democrats settle their internal divisions and join the discussion with a serious proposal.”

Union Abuses in Wisconsin

From the office of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker

Madison— Today Governor Walker’s office released more specific examples and new details to show how collective bargaining fiscally impacts government and how reforming collective bargaining can improve government.

A Year’s Worth of Pay for 30 Days of Work

Under the Green Bay School District’s collectively bargained Emeritus Program, teaches can retire and receive a year’s worth of salary for working only 30 days over a three year period. This is paid in addition to their already guaranteed pension and health care payouts.

At the average annual salary for a Green Bay teacher of $51,355, this amounts to a daily rate of pay of $1,711.83, or an hourly rate of $213.98. Since most retiring teachers receive higher than average salary, these amounts are, in practice, much higher.

Congressman Kinzinger Supports National Ground Water Awareness Week

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-11) today expressed his support of the Illinois Ground Water Association and National Ground Water Association’s National Ground Water Awareness Week (March 6th-12th).

Ground water makes up more than 90 percent of accessible freshwater in the world, making it the primary water source for nearly half of all Americans. In addition, ground water provides 53.5 billion gallons of water per day for agricultural irrigation needs.

“Often times, we take our clean drinking water for granted,” said Kinzinger. “I applaud the Illinois Ground Water Association for their work on behalf of National Ground Water Awareness Week. Safe ground water requires effort on everyone’s part and is imperative in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle for our families and the conservation of our environment. Republicans In Wisc. Pass Curbs on Gov’t Unions

-By Warner Todd Huston

After all the huffing and puffing, we find that Wisconsin’s Republicans have a spine after all. They have taken a step that they have many times threatened and divvied up the budget bill with the provisions to scale back some of the collective bargaining “rights” once had by the state’s government employees and gone ahead and passed the thing.

On Wednesday night, the Wisconsin Senate — minus the fleebagging Democrats that have run off to Illinois — separated from the budget bill the part of the previous legislation that eliminates some, but not all, of the collective bargaining capacity of government workers.

Even though the past legislation could not be passed without a quorum because of the fleeing Democrats, the Senate Republicans utilized a work around to pass the parts of the legislation that affected unions. By separating the union parts out of the budget bill, they got around the quorum requirements that are necessary to pass bills that concern spending. With the part that didn’t spend money in committee legally and properly and without the need for a quorum the Republicans passed the union provisions.

Ill. Gov. Quinn Repealing Death Penalty

-By Warner Todd Huston

Claiming that “It is impossible to create a perfect system, one that is free of all mistakes,” Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed a bill that would eliminate the death penalty in Illinois, despite a campaign promise that he would keep it.

In signing the order, Quinn also commuted the sentences of 15 death row inmates converting the sentences to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

During his recent campaign to take his own full term as Governor (Quinn filled out disgraced Gov. Blagojevich’s last term), Quinn claimed that he’d keep the death penalty, but he also said he’d keep the moratorium in place as the system is reviewed. His opponent at the time, State Senator Bill Brady, said he would end the moratorium.

‘Atheists for Islam’ Happy to Support Religion?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Sometimes a single picture is enough to put the left’s folly in crystal clear terms and we have one for you today.

The current crop of militant atheists have been parading about the country wailing about how the evil, evil Christians are oppressing them by having non-sectarian things like “In God We Trust” on our money or allowing a manger scene on city property. That’s some oppression, there, eh?

Well, last weekend a photo was snapped that shows exactly what militant atheists really mean behind their rhetoric. Oh, they aren’t against religion. They don’t likely think they are being oppressed, either. No their real goal is rather simple. They are enemies of Christianity exclusively.

Today’s militant atheists aren’t looking for “equality” or “fair treatment.” They only want one thing: the destruction of Christianity. The total elimination of it in public.

Why do I say that? Witness the photo below snapped at the March 6th “I Am A Muslim Too” rally held at Times Square, New York, organized by rap music mogul Russell Simmons.

This is a stark contradiction in terms, is it not? Atheists are spending every waking minute telling anyone that will listen that religion is the root of all evil — and by that they mean Christianity — yet here they are helping to support Islam at an “interfaith” rally?

How does that track? How does it make any sense at all?
