WaPost: Slams Older Workers as ‘Lumbering,’ Less Talented

-By Warner Todd Huston

Looks like Washington Post Editorial Page Editor Fred Hiatt sort of put his foot in his mouth — or his pen as the case may be — in an April 27 editorial where he as much as called America’s older workers “lumbering” and less talented than “younger, nimbler” employees. In a nation that has one of its largest blocks of citizens in the “older” category, those over 40, it seems like Hiatt just insulted the largest number of Americans. Not the best way to sell newspapers, eh?

In his headlined “600,000 Bad Hires? Making Federal Jobs Cool Once Again,” Hiatt seems to be urging The One to come to the rescue of the jobs market. Well, not real jobs, but government jobs, anyway.

Here is how he jabs workers over 40.

Specter: An Opportunist Guilty of Political Treason

-By Frank Salvato

US Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) announced this week that he was switching political parties. Initially he said that he was doing so because he didn’t want to be “judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate,” the same electorate he courted in his last election. But later, after he realized his statement depicted him as an ungrateful political opportunist, he said his decision was based on the idea that the Republican Party – which has moved more to the center in recent years – has “moved too far to the Right.” The truth is that Specter is a political opportunist who has literally thrown his constituency under the bus just to save his political career. In the political sense, he is a traitor.

The element of surprise surrounding this announcement comes in that he chose a time when the Republican Party can least afford to lose even one from their ranks. With anti-American, neo-Marxist Al Franken likely to be seated as the junior senator from Minnesota and the two Independent senators, Joseph Lieberman (CT) and Bernie Sanders (VT), voting with Democrats on social issues, President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have their “last man needed” to advance social programs that will redefine the authority of the American government and literally cripple the economy. Arlen Specter has handed Barack Obama the total of his agenda for at least the next two years and there isn’t a damn thing the Republicans can do about it.

Homeland Security’s Unsecure Secretary

-By John Armor

Today comes news that the Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, is replacing Roger Mackin with Phillip Mudd. Who? What? So?

Roger Mackin was the undersecretary for intelligence and analysis. He was responsible for the memo issued just before the 750+ Tea Parties attended by 1 million+ Americans. You know that memo, which said people who oppose abortion, attend church, and own legal guns are potential terrorists. And don’t forget that it also said veterans returning from Iraq or Afghanistan are risky, too.

Before talking about that appalling memo, let’s back up a minute. What is the purpose of the Homeland Security Department? It is to protect Americans in their homes, businesses, schools and shopping malls from being slaughtered by (mostly) Islamofascists who have announced their intentions to keep killing Americans, as they did on 9/11.

Chavez’ Penn, Or How Santa Monica High Should Hang Its Penn in Shame

-By Warner Todd Huston

Someone needs to sue Santa Monica High School for education malpractice on behalf of the ill-educated Sean Penn. I mean, the man is nearly illiterate and he certainly has no grasp on history, philosophy, or statecraft. But his wacko left-wing inanities aside, it is his illiteracy that seems the most lamentable. Oh, it isn’t Rosie O’Donnell illiterate, hers is a special class of insensibility all by itself, but Penn’s brand is proof of the lowest quality of education. I mean the man can barely put two words together sensibly much less exhibit a grasp of grammar and syntax. It really is a crime how badly he’s been educated.

Take for instance his latest Huffington Post blathering where he seems to be saying that all we need to win the day in international relations is to give a “smile.” Aside from being childishly simplistic in concept, it has some of the worst word usage and syntax I’ve seen for a long time in what is supposed to be a leader of opinion (again, Rosie aside).

Now, I don’t claim to be the king of grammar, myself. But, if I had millions of dollars as he does I’d at least be smart enough to hire an editor so that I don’t end up looking like a complete moron. Unfortunately, I am one of the po’folk, so I have to muddle through as best as I can.

His wind up is amusing for its utter lack of introspection.

An Intolerance for Southern Culture

-By Warner Todd Huston

In July of 2008 a national hotel chain manager had a man arrested for displaying a Confederate flag in his hotel room window in Concord, North Carolina. It happened that Concord’s Wingate Inn had booked guests that had come to participate in the annual convention for an organization known as the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV), a group that celebrates family ties to that Confederate service of 145 years ago. To be sure the hotel manager knew full well that every guest would be displaying Confederate flags everywhere they went. On shirts, on book bags, on posters, on their cars these dozens of guests had Confederate flags on display. Little flags, medium sized flags, and big flags filled the hotel.

Yet hotel management called the cops on this one guy.

So, what happened? Why did this hotel manager imagine he had the right to force just this one guy, Basil D. Childress of Kentucky, to pull down his flag while ignoring all the others? Why were the police idiotic enough to actually arrest the non-violent and perfectly compliant hotel guest instead of telling the hotel manager that he was acting foolishly?

Harry Reid’s Arrogant Obama

-By Warner Todd Huston

Harry Reid made a mistake. I know that is over generalized so I’ll narrow it down to a specific mistake because there are far too many from which to choose. The mistake I am taking about is in the addendum to his book titled “The Good Fight,” ghost written by Mark Warren, that is about to come out in paperback.

Reid added a 15-page epilogue to the paperback version that confirms Obama’s arrogance. In it, Reid claims to have approached Obama after a speech on Bush’s war policies that Reid heard Obama give just after becoming the Junior Senator from Illinois. After congratulating Obama on the speech, Reid recounts that Obama replied, “I have a gift, Harry.”

Well, that wasn’t too self-congratulatory, too arrogant, what it now?

The Fiduciary Trust

-By Dan Scott

Everyone who is responsible for financial transactions and decisions that effect the wellbeing of others understands the term, fiduciary. There is a code of ethics and duty which governs that relationship. I will quote the on line Business Dictionary to help you understand this idea of fiduciary so you may see how essential it is in the conduct of business affairs: (bold is mine)

Special relationship of trust and confidence which, in the words justice Benjamin Nathan Cardozo (1870-1938; US Supreme court judge from 1932 to 1938) is “something more than the ordinary honor of the marketplace … the very punctilio of honesty and forthrightness.” Fiduciary relationships exist between an agent and principal, testator and trustee, testator and executor, ward and guardian, customer and bank, client and attorney, patient and doctor, partner and partner, stockholders (shareholders) and directors, etc. In these relationships law demands a higher than ordinary degree of care and responsibility from the dominant or trusted party.

A Week for the Earth; A Day for the Constitution

-By Frank Salvato

Each morning, as I drive my wife to the train, we listen to our local news talk radio station, WIND AM560 in Chicago. Their morning team, John and Cisco, offer a solid discussion on most issues presented, much more balanced and cerebral than the other talkers in Chicago. On this day, and, in fact, for most of the week, they have been addressing “Earth Week.” Today, as we made our way to the train, Cisco said something that struck a chord with both of us. To paraphrase, he said that he was a bit annoyed that Earth Day had morphed into Earth Week. To which my wife, Nancy, said, “You know, they have a week for the Erath but just one day for the Constitution.”

Nancy’s statement is true, not only for Earth Week but for a multitude of celebratory causes and events. We have Arthritis Week, Eating Disorders Week, Contraceptive Week, Celebrate Your Name Week and Let’s Talk About Sex Week. We even have entire months that are dedicated to causes and ideologies. There is National Prune Breakfast Month, Black History Month, Boost-Your-Self-Esteem Month, National Social Workers Month, National Salsa Month, Gay Pride Month, Lasagna Awareness Month, National Hispanic Heritage Month, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender History Month, Wear Brown Shoes Month and National Toilet Tank Repair Month.

But when it comes to the study and appreciation of the document that allows us all to celebrate and expand our awareness of these “important” issues we halfheartedly designate one day in September. US Constitution Day is September 17th.

About Dick Cheney: How the Old Media Creates a False Attack

-By Warner Todd Huston

The newest false meme invented by the Old Media is this claim that ex-presidents and ex-vice presidents have some sort of “tradition of silence” where it concerns commenting on those that take residence in the White House after they leave. The reason the Old Media is pushing this false claim is because Dick Cheney has been commenting on Obama’s security mistakes and the Old Media wants to scold Cheney for his efforts to get the truth to the people.

Certainly it is true that some ex-chief executives have maintained silence after they left office. Still, it isn’t really true that there has been any long tradition of staying silent out of some sort of respect for the new president. But, no matter how many past presidents/vice presidents have remained quiet, the one glaring exception to that so-called tradition is the vp just before Cheney: Al Gore. And this man has been absent in the Media’s attack on Cheney.

Obama Reverses Rule, Gives Unions Cover for Corruption

-By Warner Todd Huston

Well, we can’t say no one saw this one coming, but Obama has turned back rules that had been put in place to force unions to be more transparent in their financial reporting. These rules were meant to stop union fraud, theft, and embezzlement but in an effort to pay back his supporters, Obama has turned these rules back so that unions can find it easier to hide illicit financial transactions.

Naturally, one of the chief opponents to union transparency that fought the Bush administration, Deborah Greenfield, is now in the Obama administration. It was Greenfield that fought the financial reporting rules when she was a lawyer for the AFL-CIO. She was against forcing unions to account for all their illicit cash and secret accounts then. Now that she is in charge of implementing such rules she has been a major part of eliminating them so that unions could more easily hide their financial dealings from union members and the government.

Americans who reject Marxist socialism are castigated as ‘right-wing extremists’

-By Marie Jon

It could not be nearer to what you suspect. Under his new regime, President Barack Obama’s Department of Homeland Security sent an intimidating message to law enforcement agencies nationwide calculated to silence any American who does not agree with the president’s social notions and political agenda.

It is obvious that Rev. Jeremiah Wright is the driving force behind Obama’s paranoia. What the future president took away from Rev. Wright’s sermons contributes to Obama’s outlook and resultant policies, both at home and abroad. We have become a weakened country. Our enemies see a president who is ready to cozy up to any unscrupulous dictator who wants to inflict harm against our country, while Obama calls it a meaningful dialogue.

AP Barf Alert: Obama Has no ‘Rookie Jitters,’ is ‘Extraordinarily at Ease’ as President

-By Warner Todd Huston

I am not a doctor, but I play one on the Internet. So, take the following as a prescription for what ails you. Now, if for some unexplainable reason you have been feeling queasy since November of last year, if you have felt like you want to throw up but just can’t seem to get that bile to overflow, well I have a little something here that will surely cause that gag reflex to result in a healthy expulsion of bubbling acids. The Associated Press would call it a “news story,” but it serves a far better purpose as syrup of ipecac than anything else.

Anyway, if you need a ready emetic, try giving a read to our pal Liz Sidoti’s doting portrayal of President Obama as a “no jitters” expert that is “extraordinarily at ease” sitting in the big chair. He’s a fellow that has mastered the office even though he has “youth and inexperience,” and he’s Confident almost to a fault.” Obama is the greatest story ever told as far as Liz is concerned… and after only four short months in office to boot.

But, wait. There’s more puke inspiring sycophancies yet to come… read on if you dare.

Obamaphiles Enjoy That Which They Would Deny You

-By Frederick Meekins

The Obama progeny are well into their studies at Sidwell Friends School. As their parents, Barack and Michelle have every right to enroll their daughters in the school they think best for their children. Ironically, this is one of the many prerogatives the President’s most enthusiastic supporters would frown upon should you, the average American, decide to exercise them.

For decades now, liberals and secularists have argued that those pursuing nonpublic education for their children ought to be held in suspicion for exhibiting insufficient devotion to the COMMUNITY. Some might try to obfuscate the matter by claiming that that they do not oppose private education as much as they support the public alternatives.

Obamideal: Magazine Photoshops Prez Image for Cover, Is It Ethical?

-By Warner Todd Huston

A few days ago Noel Sheppard brought to us the story of yet another example of how the star struck media is fawning over President Obama. But, when the story first broke of the photo of that lean, swimsuit wearing Obama gracing the cover of the next issue of Washingtonian Magazine, it wasn’t immediately realized that the photo itself was a photoshoppped image of the president and not in its original form.

But not soon after the image of the cover was released folks began to realize what had happened. It turns out that Washingtonian Magazine made several photoshop alterations to the Obama image to enhance it to make it more pleasing to look upon. So, the main question centers on whether it’s ethical to photoshop the image of the president for a news story?

I suppose, though, if you want your Obammessiah to look his best, why not use all the tools at your disposal… even if they are a tad unethical.

Race Baiting Alabama Councilman Plies Faux Outrage Over Confederate Flags on Graves

-By Warner Todd Huston

The cool thing about attacking someone that’s been dead for over 100 years is that they can’t fight back. The other cool thing is that you can use them to fuel your race baiting so that you can get some cheap publicity, get noticed, or play the faux “civil rights leader” on TV.

Such is the case in Auburn, Alabama where a city councilman decided to get noticed by ripping tiny Confederate flags from the graves of long-dead Confederate veterans buried in a local cemetery. Shockingly those flags were placed there on Confederate Memorial Day. Who wouldda thunk it, eh? Confederate flags on Confederate graves on Confederate Memorial Day! Shocking, I know.

Despite that this has been going on for well over 100 years, this councilman puffed himself up to being “offended” because he claimed he was a “civil rights leader.” He said that the tiny flags made him feel that the cemetery was “like a Klan rally or a skinhead rally.” He put on his showy high dudgeon claiming that the tiny flags are “intimidating to black folks.” Yes, he, an elected official, is “intimidated.”

A Jackboot at Home, an Olive Branch Abroad

-By Thomas E. Brewton

President Obama seems intent upon cramming stifling socialist programs down our throats domestically, while he relies upon pretty-word diplomacy with foreign nations that have vowed to destroy us.

Reportedly the President’s chief of staff Rahm Emanuel stated that an economic crisis is too good an opportunity to be wasted on economics, when it can be used, as Franklin Roosevelt did in the Depression, to revolutionize the nation’s social and political structure, in effect to amend the Constitution without the bother of submitting amendments in accord with the Constitution’s Article V.

This connotes a domestic jackboot approach evident in many recent Federal actions and policy initiatives. For example:

There Never Were Any ‘180 Waterboardings’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Once again, we see the truth take a back seat to the best spin by Democrats. NRO’s The Corner blog has an exclusive report on the supposed “180 waterboardings” that the US government conducted on terror suspects and it appears that the truth is a bit different than the spin.

You see, it seems that there weren’t “180 waterboardings” but were instead 180 “pours.” In other words, water was poured on the suspects 180 times. Further, the rules were quite specific. No more than two sessions could be conducted on any suspect within a 24 hour period and no more than 6 “pours” of water were allowed per session.

This means that instead of 180 sessions on the waterboard there was a much lower 30.

But, as Cliff May notes on The Corner blog, all the carefully crafted rules for how to conduct waterboard interrogations reveals a far different situation than the Torquemada-like, torture loving Bush administration that critics are trying to advance.

Why Eggheads Are Sometimes Bad for America

-By Warner Todd Huston

I will admit it. I am a subscriber to the Claremont Review of Books. Whatever you make of that, don’t imagine that I am one of those pointy-headed, University types that sit about in tweed jackets with leather elbow patches, drawing on a pipe, and pontificating about the Greek Classics. On the other hand, I ain’t no anti-intellectual neither. Just consider me one of those fellows that knows just enough to be dangerous.

In any case, one thing that always strikes me about The CRB is that I always find at least one article that proves to me that while eggheads might make for wonderful support for policy, that they may be ideal for an intellectual underpinning of ideas, they would be horrible implementers of it should they be the ones in charge– yes even those ostensibly on our own side of the issues. As it happens, the Winter issue of the CRB did not disappoint me in this area.

Jon Stewart Cows Another Lefty – Did Matthews Change Book Title Over Stewart Mockery?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Back in 2007, lefty comedian Jon Stewart mercilessly mocked lefty talk show host Chris Matthews over the title of his book when Matthews appeared to flog the tome on Stewart’s The Daily Show. The ribbing was so unexpected and so mean spirited that Matthews later said it was a “book interview from hell.”

Now Matthews is releasing the book in paperback but amazingly there is a tiny difference between this version of the book and the original. The pulper was originally titled, “Life’s a Campaign: What Politics Has Taught Me About Friendship, Rivalry, Reputation, and Success.” But now, all of a sudden the paperback version of this thing is heading to stores as, “The Hardball Handbook: How to Win at Life.”

So, what gives? Is Matthews afraid of Stewart’s renewed attack on his book? Did Matthews change the book’s title for fear of a comedian?

The ‘Youth’ Have Failed The Messiah

-By Warner Todd Huston

Obama was supposed to have energized “the youth” of this country like no other presidential candidate ever. We were assured that with Obama as president we’d see a revitalization of “the youth” that would respond by streaming to volunteer for public service. And, in expectation of this avalanche of volunteers, and in build-it-they-will-come mode, Obama had passed through Congress his brown-shirt-like Serve America Act that pumped some $6 billion of our tax money into an upgraded national and community service program.

But the youth have failed him. According to Peter Levine, director of Tufts University’s Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning & Engagement (CIRCLE) youth volunteering has dropped for the first time sine 9/11.

Of course, I am making light of the situation, here, admittedly. But, let’s look at something that goes against the Obama line of mythology as far as his real support among America’s youth goes. Let’s face it, it isn’t just Obama. The vaunted youth vote has been in steady decline since 18-year-olds were given the vote by a mistaken act of Congress in 1972.

‘Getting Around Congress?’ — It’s Much Worse than That

-By John Armor

The Treasury Department announced today that it would “convert its preferred stock in the nation’s largest banks into common stock.” The stated advantages were that this would allow Treasury to aid more banks without going back to Congress for more money than what was already approved. Some Administration officials even said that this would “get around Congress.”

That alone would be bad enough. But the actual meaning of this action subverts the entire Constitution and is an assault on the American people. It is a take-over of American government, similar to the take-overs that occur every month or so, in tin-pot dictatorships around the world.

Not The Change They Were Expecting

-By Ann “Babe” Huggett

The International Monetary Fund’s, World Economic Outlook, report may be squealing about how the Globalist economy contracting by a measly 1.3% makes it the worst recession since World War II but they haven’t seen anything yet. Governments can do all the economic stimulus packages they want but you can not force people to buy when they don’t want to. All those chickens from outsourcing of jobs to cheaper workers in emerging nations and insourcing of H1-b and L-1 workers, not to mention illegals, to flood the labor pool with cheaper labor is coming home to roost. Big corporations in collusion with big governments thought that they could fascistically enrich themselves through the socialistic manipulation of Market Forces but they forgot that the Market is ruled by the Law of Supply and Demand. Demand has dropped off because the very people, who were driving the economic engine of success, have become impoverished. They were stripped of their jobs and work because corporations did not want to pay prevailing First World wages or benefits to First World workers.

These same First World workers, who were once congratulated as the best and most productive workers in the world, have been told to, “Go out and reinvent yourselves.” for years by either starting their own businesses or switching careers. Striking out on your own when your schooling system has trained you to be nothing but a cog in the machine? Switching careers when one is over 50? Starting a business when federal, state and local governments do everything they can to make life difficult with red tape? The effects of this callous employment policy are cumulative; ruination and starvation don’t adhere to party lines, deadlines or properly filled out forms.

Another Purported ‘Conservative’ Goes on Attack… on OTHER Conservatives

-By Warner Todd Huston

Apparently Ross Douthat’s buddy Reihan Salam doesn’t like former VP Dick Cheney. Salam’s recent TheDailyBeast.com column calls Cheney “America’s surliest pundit,” and moans that the ex-vp hasn’t “graciously kept his mouth shut” in retirement like Bush has. Like many of these circular firing squad leaders (think Douthat, Kathleen Parker, the McCain clan or David Frum) Salam is far more interested in shooting at folks on his own side than in trying to move ahead for the future of the conservative movement. It’s obviously some sick bid to be “liked” by the Old Media establishment.

Salam charges that Cheney is too busy “mugging for the camera” and attacking Obama with his “macho snarl” to see that he should just go away. Blah, blah, blah, and such and so forth. In truth, Salam offers nothing worth debating and nearly everything he says in this screed is simply erroneous, so I won’t bother with his self-hating blather against Cheney whose information is a must hear for any conservative looking to see where Obama is going wrong on homeland security and foreign policy.

But, the one issue that moves me to discuss Salam’s carping is simply this: why should a former president or vice-president go off into the night never to talk in public again? Even more to the point, how often has it happened, anyway?

KC Star: Republicans Afraid of Limbaugh, Uses Democratic Press Release to ‘Prove’ It

-By Warner Todd Huston

Yael T. Abouhalkah is all excited to let the readers of the Kansas City Star know that he’s found another Republican politician that has had to grovel at the feet of Rush Limbaugh, apologizing to the radio giant for a slight cast his way. And to “prove” it Abouhalkah used a press release from the Democratic National Campaign Committee that said so. Yeah, nice unbiased source there, Abouhalkah.

Seriously, does Abouhalkah imagine that a Democrat Party press release is an unbiased source about what is happening between a Republican lawmaker and Rush Limbaugh? No wonder newspapers are falling on such tough times. If Abouhalkah is any indication, the definition of common words aren’t even any longer understood in the Star’s newsroom. Words like “source,” “unbiased,” “legitimate,” and “veracity” seem to be foreign to the folks at the Star. With such a failure to understand the very basics of journalism, its no wonder readers are abandoning newspapers in droves.

Just a Tiny Example of Government Waste

-By Warner Todd Huston

On April 22, the Associated Press published a short report about the fact that the Department of Homeland Security has decided to stop paying for employee subscriptions to newspapers and magazines “to save money.”

Upon reading this, some may initially shake their heads in hearty agreement and congratulate Obama’s DHS for trying to save money. I, on the other hand, see this as a perfect example of a typical waste of the taxpayer’s money, though one finally rectified.

After all, what does this cancellation of subscriptions mean? It means government employees were getting FREE personal subscriptions to their favorite entertainment publications… well, free to themselves, anyway. We must realize that we the people have been saddled with the bill all along for who knows how many thousands of magazine and newspaper subscriptions for who knows how many years?

Card Check: Seeing Unicorns and Rainbows in Hades

-By Warner Todd Huston

The New York Times is attempting to spin gold from straw, telling us unicorns are real, expecting the Tooth Fairy to bring a windfall. At least, that is what it seems if we are to believe the Times’ fantasy card check union story from April 20. You see, the Times believes that an overwhelming anti-union vote held via secret ballot is proof that card check is necessary.

This pretzel logic insists that the employer in question was so underhanded that even a secret ballot was corrupted by the efforts by the employer to scare off employees from supporting the union. But, here is the thing that makes no sense: if the ballot is secret, since no employee’s name was connected to the vote, and if the employer was that mean to the workers, WHY did they still vote against the union?

The Left Is Making a Mistake in Ridiculing the Tea Parties

-By Frank Salvato

The political Left in the United States is making a grave mistake in diminishing and dismissing the anger of the American people. Where it may be common place for liberals, Leftists, neo-Marxists and Progressive-Leftists to take to the streets over anything and everything, including a change of wind direction, it is entirely a different story with conservatives and Republicans. Conservatives and Republicans don’t march in the streets for anything. The fact that they have now taken to the streets in protest of massive government spending and government’s encroachment into our liberties speaks volumes to those who would listen.

“Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!”

An amazing thing happened on the way to America’s socialistic demise…a revolution has fomented. Born of a righteous anger centered on wasteful and special interest government spending, lack of honest representation in government, a move toward transforming the United States Constitutional Republic into a Socialist Democracy, excessive taxation and many more constitutionally based grievances, conservatives, traditionalists and Republicans, as well as centrists, independents and Democrats, took to the streets of just about every congressional district to protest a behemoth runaway government run by an elitist and opportunistic political class. From Chicago to New York, St. Louis to San Francisco, St. Paul to Austin and Miami to Portland, hard-working, taxpaying Americans, who aren’t too often moved to taking to the streets in protest, took to the streets to redress their government.
