Big Three Networks Cover Internet Cats Pics, Lit Trivia, Canadian Clumsiness, But Not Gosnell Trial

-By Warner Todd Huston

Another week has gone by and the Big Three Networks, ABC, CBS, and NBC, again gave scant notice to the “house of horrors” that is the Kermit Gosnell abortion trial. The Nets had time for funny cat pictures on the Internet, a Canadian mayor bumping into a camera, and fun trivia about the book Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but little time for the shocking trial in Philadelphia.

As the week of April 15 came to an end, the prosecution finished presenting its case in the Gosnell trial, but the Big Three Nets still paid little attention to the story. The prosecution’s presentation included shocking horror stories such as parts of fetuses clogging the plumbing in the clinic, that assistants had no medical training or had no licenses to practice, that babies were born alive and breathing until Gosnell shoved scissors into the base of their skulls to kill them, that adult patients were killed by Gosnell and his workers but the nets weren’t interested on Wednesday and Thursday.

What did the Networks cover instead? An analysis by the Media Research Center of the three network’s programming revealed many fun and interesting stories.

On Wednesday April 17, ABC reported that Holly Golightly, the lead character in Truman Caport’s novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s, was originally going to be named “Connie Gustafson.” ABC’s Dianne Sawyer also had time to talk of comic book character Superman’s 75th birthday.

Sunday Shows Go Full Out On Immigration

-By Warner Todd Huston

It looks like the Sunday morning political shows got the same memo that Immigration is the topic of the day for April 7.

The big three networks and CNN are all hosting guests that certainly lean toward amnesty for illegals if not out right in support of the same.

CBS’ Face the Nation

  • Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)
  • Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY)
  • Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State

NBC’s Meet the Press

  • Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)
  • Bill Richardson, former U.N. Ambassador and New Mexico governor (D)
  • Michele Flournoy, former Undersecretary of Defense for Policy

NBC’s Chuck Todd: Is Gay Marriage Issue a Sign the Economy is Coming Back?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Chuck Todd presented an odd premise on last Sunday’s Meet the Press. Since the issue of gay marriage is now before the Supreme Court of the United States, Todd wondered if this meant that the economy is back on track because people’s attention has drifted from the economy to gay marriage?

During the March 31 broadcast, Todd noted that we are suddenly beset by a major debate on gay marriage and abortion. The NBC newser then pointed out that in the past the “big polarizing issues of the last two generations” have benefited Republicans.

Panelist Peggy Noonan of the Wall Street Journal didn’t really think that we were exactly seeing any new focus on social issues because these fights have been going on for half a century. It was just part and parcel to our political climate, she pointed out.

Law & Order: SVU’s ‘Legitimate Rape’ Episode

-By Warner Todd Huston

The next episode of NBC’s Law & Order: SVU will feature another story “ripped from the headlines.” This time, the show that mines controversy will tackle “legitimate rape” ala former Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin.

The promo for the episode clearly gives the gist of the show.

A woman (The Walking Dead’s Lauren Cohan) is raped by a co-worker (David Marciano, Homeland) but she decides to keep the child. The episode features the rapist being tried for the crime. An “expert” witness is then seen uttering the Akinesque line.

The voice over says: “Ripped from the headlines. Words that set off a national controversy.”

A character sitting in the witness box then says, “It’s nearly impossible for a victim of legitimate rape to become pregnant.” This is followed by looks of disgust by the two female lead detective characters sitting in the courtroom gallery.

Clearly the jury accepts the expert’s testimony hence all the grimacing by the show’s stars,

Despite Wide Appeal to Middle America, Jay Leno Out at ‘Tonight’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Despite solid ratings and wide appeal to middle America, NBC is poised to replace Jay Leno with Jimmy Fallon as the host of the Tonight Show as Leno’s contract nears its end.

Leno was off the show for six months between 2009 to 2010 when Conan O’Brien briefly hosted the Tonight Show, but as the news breaks that he’s to be replaced, this time by Fallon, some news outlets are calling Leno the “conservative’s” TV host.

Politico reported on March 22 that the “Right bemoans possible Jay Leno exit,” and asks, “Could Jay Leno become a new conservative hero?”

Politico features a Tweet from Matt Drudge saying, “Left cheering Leno exit typical, he dared to entertain and offer jokes for the other 50% of country. Unacceptable in ‘New America’…”

NBC Was Disappointed That Asian Cardinal Was ‘No Reformer’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Catching up on how the media treated the days before Pope Francis became the new leader of the Catholic Church, as the Vatican hosted its conclave, NBC looked into the work of Asian Cardinal Luis Antonio “Chito” Tagle–a possiblePapal candidate–and came to the sad conclusion that he was just as traditional as any other cardinal. As NBC ruefully noted, Tagle is “no reformer.”

NBC started out on a hopeful note: “On the face of it Philippine Cardinal Luis Antonio ‘Chito’ Tagle has a lot going for him as a contender for pope. He’s young: At 55, the second youngest of the cardinals. He sings and preaches on television, and has 120,000 followers on Facebook.”

He was hip, young, and he’s into technology. And apparently, simply because he’s Asian, NBC wondered if he would toe a liberal line and be one who would institute “social reform” if he became Pope.

But NBC went on to note that Cardinal Tagle is as staunchly against contraceptives as any other traditional cardinal, a stance that is a chief tenet of the Church.

NBC Suits Criticize Jay Leno for Late Night Jokes

-By Warner Todd Huston

Host of the The Tonight Show, Jay Leno, has come under fire from NBC executives for making jokes about the network’s recent slide in the ratings during his monologues.

Reports suggest that Robert Greenblat, Chairman of Entertainment, fired off a series of emails slamming the late night comedian for daring to lampoon the ratings slide. Leno gave back as good as he got, insiders say, and bristled against the PC, company line criticism.

What offended Greenblat? On February 28, for instance, Leno kicked off his NBC ratings segment saying, “For the first time in history NBC is going to finish fifth in the ratings period. We are behind the Spanish-language network Univision — or as we call it here in Los Angeles: Cinco de Ratings.”

He went on to joke that, “It’s so bad, ‘The Biggest Loser’ isn’t just a TV show anymore; it’s our new motto.” And: “It’s so bad, NBC called Manti Te’o and asked him to bring in some imaginary viewers.”

Matt Lauer to Replace Alex Trebek on ‘Jeopardy!’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Matt Lauer, co-host of NBC’s struggling morning news show, Today, may have a new job offer. Reports are the Lauer is being considered as a replacement for Alex Trebek as host of the long-running game show, Jeopardy!.

Trebek has suffered repeated health scares, recently suffering a second heart attack, and is expected to retire from his game show hosting duties sometime in the next few years.

Sources say that Sony Pictures, producers of the lucrative game show, have reached out to Lauer to replace Trebek starting in the 2016 season.

Lauer has experienced steeply falling popularity on the set of Today, after the mishandling of the firing of co-host Ann Curry–an action that many assume Lauer helped initiate. In 2012, Lauer’s “Q Score,” an industry measure of popularity, took a sharp dive.

NBC’s Today has also suffered in the ratings ever since.

Another name under consideration to replace Trebek is CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

Tom Brokaw: Obama Spends Too Much Time Campaigning

-By Warner Todd Huston

Old NBC News hand Tom Brokaw made an appearance on MSNBC’s The Cycle on March 4 and criticized President Obama for campaigning too much instead of governing. Brokaw also castigated Obama for refusing to negotiate with Republicans over the budget impasse and the sequester cuts.

Extremely liberal panel member, Touré, asked Brokaw if the budget impasse was because the GOP is “refusing” to work with Obama because they are “incented” [sic] not to work with him.

Brokaw replied that he didn’t think that Republicans were flat out refusing to work with the President but are negotiating with an eye to the 2014 midterm elections and don’t want to give away too much. Brokaw went on to lament that Obama is doing little else but demonizing the GOP instead of looking for ways to work with them.

Bashing Benedict: Networks Slam Retiring Pope

-By Warner Todd Huston

A new study by the Culture and Media Institute of Pope Benedict’s retirement reveals constant attacks, ridicule, and repeated allusions to scandals as ABC, CBS, and NBC reported on Benedict’s final days.

The survey reveals that the Catholic Church was repeatedly deemed “troubled,” the Church was attacked for not “modernizing,” the real-world Church was constantly compared to the fictitious world of novelist Dan Brown and his Da Vinci Code series of books, and late night TV hosts turned Benedict into a butt of jokes.

On February 11, Pope Benedict announced his retirement due to ill health setting off the big three networks into attack mode.

“From Benedict’s Feb. 11 resignation through the evening of Feb. 27, the day before it took effect, the networks referred to the Catholic Church as a troubled institution 122 times and aired the word ‘scandal’ 87 times in 112 reports. Anchors and reporters suggested that the Church must modernize (32 times) and pressed for change in issues regarding women (7 times) and gays (13 times). At times, they trivialized the first resignation of a Pope since the 1500s as ‘worthy of a Dan Brown novel’ (ABC’s Harris again.) and sensationalized it by entertaining theories about other reasons Benedict might be stepping down.”

On the lighter side, over the two-week period, network morning shows continuously aired jokes about Benedict staged by late night comedy shows such as Jimmy Fallon, David Letterman and Conan O’Brien.

Could CNBC Be Depriving Viewers of Vital Information?

-By Warner Todd Huston

There was once a day when particular media outlets were so dominant that they could essentially make the rules on who they permitted to appear with them whether in print, on the radio, or on TV. Those days are long gone, of course. So, why does CNBC still think it has the power to demand that guests appear solely on its network? And, in so doing is CNBC depriving its viewers of the vital financial information that they need to plan their business days?

CNBC is the most watched financial-centered cable news network, certainly. Though its younger competitor, Fox Business Network, has been making amazing inroads into CNBCs viewer base, the older network is still on top of the heap… for now.

But will that hold if CNBC’s booking practices stay as they are now? One might wonder.

When Indicted, Networks Barely Mentioned Jesse Jackson, Jr’s Misuse of $750,000 in Campaign Cash

-By Warner Todd Huston

A survey of news coverage by the big three networks of the indictment of former Chicago Democrat Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. was sparse to non-existent for the first three days after the indictment was made public. Even when his trouble was reported, the fact that he is a Democrat went unmentioned.

Jackson was indicted on Friday, February 15, but as Friday, then the weekend rolled on, the big three networks didn’t seem much interested in covering the story. In fact, a survey of the coverage found that the big nets gave the story scant attention that Friday and, while there were a few ultra short reports on the indictment on Saturday, there was no coverage at all on Sunday.

On Friday, for instance, NBC’s Nightly News gave the story short attention. By Saturday, Good Morning America gave the story a whole 18 seconds. Worse, even when the network news shows did report the story on Saturday evening, Jackson’s party affiliation was never mentioned.

Interestingly, not one of the Sunday morning politics shows mentioned the indictment at all.

Big Three Nets Slant Overwhelmingly For Obama’s Gun Ban Campaign

-By Warner Todd Huston

A new study of coverage by the big three networks of President Obama’s anti-gun crusade shows an overwhelmingly positive slant toward the President’s policy ideas at an 8 to 1 ratio.

The study conducted by the Media Research Center reviewed coverage from December 14 to January 17, or from the day of the crime at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, to the day after Obama made a speech surrounded by children who purportedly sent him letters pleading for more gun control. MRC reviewed the evening newscasts as well as the three networks’ morning shows.

The results showed that stories that pushed for more gun control vastly outnumbered stories that opposed gun control by 99 to 12, or a ratio of 8 to 1.

ABC Ignores Tim Scott’s Senate Appointment in Dec., By Jan. Hails Mo Cowan’s as ‘History’

-By Warner Todd Huston

In December, ABC’s World News saw no news at all in the historic appointment of African American Tim Scott to the Senate in South Carolina. No mention was made of it during the broadcast.

Only a month later, though, the same program suddenly hailed African American William “Mo” Cowan’s appointment to the Senate as history making.

When Republican Tim Scott was appointed to fill retiring Senator Jim DeMint’s Senate seat he became the first African American from South Carolina to be sent to the Senate since 1881. Further, when he took his seat he was the only black Senator from either party in Washington D.C. But despite all these notable historic facts, ABC’s World News never mentioned Scott’s appointment.

However, this month when the Governor of Massachusetts appointed African American, Democrat Mo Cowan to finish out John Kerry’s term, ABC suddenly found it to be a moment worthy of coverage.

NBC Criticized For Casting Mike Tyson as Victim of Abuse

-By Warner Todd Huston

NBC is taking some flack for casting Mike Tyson–a convicted rapist and accused serial abuser–as a victim of abuse in an upcoming episode of the TV show “Law & Order: SVU.”

In the episode Tyson will portray a death row inmate who was abused as a child and who was convicted of murdering one of his abusers.

The network originally scheduled the episode, which finished filming months ago, to air on February 13 but since rescheduled it to air on February 6 in order to distance its air date from an international, anti-violence event planned for February 14. The international event, the One Billion Rising march, is meant to raise awareness of abuse and violence against women.

The casting was protested by rape survivor Marcie Kaveney who started a petition to have NBC recast the role removing the convicted Tyson. The petition got over 7,000 signatures.

NBC’s Brian Williams Gets Thrill Up His Leg for Michelle O

-By Warner Todd Huston

We all remember Chris Matthews getting that thrill up his leg for President Obama, right? Now Matthews’ NBC colleague, Brian Williams, is apparently ready to join that thrill seeker’s club by declaring that Michelle Obama is the most “fascinating” first lady since Jackie Kennedy.

Talking to NBC correspondent Michael Beschloss during their inauguration coverage on January 21, Brian Williams went into Chris Matthews mode saying, “We can say without hesitation there has not been this much fascination with a First Lady easily since Jackie Kennedy

Williams then made the odd claim that there was “about as much talk about her new haircut on her 49th birthday this past week as much as any other aspect of this inauguration.”

D.C. Attny Gen’s Office Now Investigating NBC’s Gregory Over Gun-Law Violation

-By Warner Todd Huston

The decision over whether or not to charge NBC’s David Gregory for breaking Washington D.C.’s strict gun-banning laws on a December 23 broadcast of Meet the Press is now in the hands of the D.C. Attorney General, authorities reported Tuesday.

The D.C. Police essentially kicked the case upstairs pushing the investigation into a new phase. Chief Cathy Lanier released an email that said in part, that her department had “completed the investigation into this matter, and the case has been presented to the OAG for a determination of the prosecutorial merit of the case.”

The case is now in the hands of Attorney General Irvin B. Nathan who’s office oversees prosecutions of “low-level offenses.” A spokesman for the office said they would not comment until their decision had been made.

David Gregory Still Under Investigation for Breaking D.C.’s Gun Laws

-By Warner Todd Huston

Despite President Obama trying to come to David Gregory’s rescue by granting him a surprise interview, the Meet the Press host is still under investigation by the Washington D.C. police department for violating D.C.’s strict gun banning laws on his December 23 broadcast.

On Meet the Press a week ago, Gregory broke D.C.’s strict gun laws by brandishing a 30-round magazine from an “assault rifle.” Possession of such high capacity magazines is illegal in the District.

There has been conflicting reports on whether or not the staff of the NBC Sunday show was given permission to use the visual aide, but whether they were given verbal permission or not, the law is pretty clear that possessing the ammunition feeding device is illegal.

How Liberals Skew Gun the Debate

-By Warner Todd Huston

Along with a news-free interview with President Obama, this weekend’s Meet the Press on NBC also gave us two fine examples of how the gun-banners in the Old Media establishment skew the debate, not to mention how clear it is that they simply have no grasp on the issues, perhaps purposefully so.

During the panel discussion of the previous week’s news as host David Gregory steered the discussion to gun control, he turned to Jon Meecham, former top man at Newsweek and current contributing editor to TIME Magazine, both flailing magazines.

Meecham gave us a great example of how the far left rhetorically skews the debate to make its own side the “common sense” side while portraying anyone in opposition as outsiders, nuts, and extremists.

I worry that our attention span on these things is so limited. You had to bring up the question of guns as the president was laying out his second term agenda. It is one of these cultural, political issues where you have a ferociously well-organized opposition and a more diffuse common sense broader population and I think that’s where the tension is.

Notice how Meecham paints the “ferociously well-organized opposition” as being separate and distinct from the “common sense broader population.”

In other words, Meecham is saying anyone that supports the Second Amendment is part of a tiny number of “ferocious” and well-organized people while most Americans are “common sense” supporters of gun banning.

David Gregory Fawns Over Obama’s ‘Lincoln Moment’

-By Warner Todd Huston

NBC’s David Gregory hosted the President on Sunday’s Meet the Press but compared to his last notable interview, when he verbally attacked his guest at every turn, Gregory was virtually asleep this weekend. Unfortunately, Gregory’s mostly timid questions and Obama’s rambling answers gave us nothing new.

The only real pointed question that Gregory asked Obama was over Susan Rice. But even there he asked the question in the meekest manner possible.

Gregory asked, “Do you feel like you let your friend Susan Rice hang out there to dry a little bit?”

The equivocation of “A little bit” was far more consideration than the badgering Gregory offered Wayne LaPierre of the National Rifle Association last week.

But all of Obama’s answers were mere talking points. Take his line about what he thinks Republicans priority is.

Obama to David Gregory’s Rescue

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last Friday NBC’s David Gregory announced a surprise visit by President Obama for the weekend’s Meet The Press.

Gregory made the announcement on his Twitter account saying, “Excited to announce that President @BarackObama will be my exclusive guest this Sunday on @MeetthePress.”

This reverses Gregory’s announced vacation. He was not scheduled to be on this weekend.

Host Gregory has been under a cloud of controversy since his December 23 gun stunt. During last Sunday’s broadcast Gregory broke Washington D.C.’s strict gun banning laws when he brandished an illegal 30-round rifle magazine on the air in the D.C. studios.

So what gives? Why did the President suddenly appear on Meet The Press? Could it be to help Gregory out of his troubles? This is obviously a presidential back patting for Gregory so that maybe the D.C. police will back off.

Matt Lauer’s tenure at NBC’s Today show seems destined to end on the most sour note possible. Not only is he finding himself increasingly unhappy on the job, he’s also now being slammed by fans on the street whenever he and his morning show co-hosts try to do on location segments.

Sen. Schumer Says Long Dead Assault Weapons Ban Responsible for Current Falling Crime Stats

-By Warner Todd Huston

On Sunday Senator Chuck Schumer tried to pass off the 1994 assault weapons ban bill that was canceled eight years ago as the reason that today’s violent crime rates have been down.

In a discussion about gun control with Senator Chuck Schumer (D, NY) and Lindsey Graham (R, SC), David Gregory of NBC’s Meet The Press correctly pointed out that past gun banning laws like the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban didn’t work and that is a challenge to Schumer’s anti-gun position. Schumer answered to Gregory with a nice twist of logic saying,

“Well, the amount of gun violence since we passed the assault weapons ban and the Brady law is down considerably,” Schumer said.

This is a twist of logic. Firstly the assault weapons ban has been off the books now for eight years so it is a big stretch to say it factors into what is happening today. Further, since the Assault weapons ban lapsed every state but one (Illinois) has passed some sort of concealed carry law meaning that there are more guns “on the street” in as much as more law abiding citizens are allowed to carry their firearms everywhere they go.

Conflicting Info: NBC Told Rifle Magazine Stunt OK

-By Warner Todd Huston

The story of David Gregory’s Meet the Press rifle magazine stunt is getting a bit more complicated. A new report says that NBC was actually told that waiving the 30-round magazine on TV would not be against the law.

The report says that law enforcement officials at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (BATF) were contacted by staffers from Meet the Press asking whether or not using the 30-round rifle magazine on the air, in the Washington D.C. studios, would be a violation of the law.

After the inquiry by NBC, the ATF contacted the D.C. police and report that the police told them that as long as the rifle magazine was empty, it would not be a violation of the city’s strict gun-ban laws.

D.C. police, however, are now saying quite then opposite.

NBC’s Gregory Mocks NRA Security Guard Idea But Sends Own Kids to Guarded School

-By Warner Todd Huston

On NBC’s Meet The Press over the weekend, David Gregory was quite confrontational with the Vice President of the National Rifle Association over the organization’s idea of putting armed security guards in every school in America. But even as Gregory mocked the NRA for the idea, he seems to see nothing wrong with sending his own kids to a school that has armed security guards each school day.

Introducing the NRA’s security guard proposal, Gregory confronted NRA VP Wayne LaPierre saying, “You blamed Hollywood and the gaming industry. But never once did you concede that guns could actually be part of the problem. Is that a meaningful contribution, Mr. LaPierre, or a dodge?”

Gregory also claimed that security guards don’t work. “But you would concede that, as good as an idea as you think this is, it may not work. Because there have been cases where armed guards have not prevented this kind of massacre, this kind of carnage. I want you would concede that point, wouldn’t you?,” the NBC anchor said.

Armed security doesn’t work? Well, then the question must be asked of Gregory why he sends his own kids to a school with just that sort of protection?

NBC’s Gregory Violates DC Gun Laws on Meet The Press

-By Warner Todd Huston

While attacking National Rifle Association President Wayne La Pierre on NBC’s Meet the Press this weekend, host David Gregory actually violated gun laws in the city where he broadcasts.

During the show, Gregory waved around a 30-round magazine for what he claimed is an AR-15 rifle. But since Meet the Press is taped in NBC’s Washington D.C. studios this is actually a violation of the city’s strict gun laws.

Washington D.C. specifically bans the very ammunition magazine that Gregory bandied about during his discussion.

DC High Capacity Ammunition Magazines – D.C. Official Code 7-2506.01 (my bold)

(b) No person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm. For the purposes of this subsection, the term large capacity ammunition feeding device means a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition. The term large capacity ammunition feeding device shall not include an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with, .22 caliber rimfire ammunition.

Penalties include “a maximum fine of $1000 and/or up to a year imprisonment.”

Appointment of Only African American Senator Unmentioned by ABC, CBS

-By Warner Todd Huston

On Monday, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley announced that she was appointing U.S. Congressman Tim Scott to the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Jim DeMint. When he is sworn in on January 3, Scott will be the lone African American of either party in the Senate but this historic news didn’t seem to interest ABC or CBS as neither mentioned the news that night.

Unsurprisingly, both ABC and CBS had segments on gun control during their respective Monday, December 17 broadcasts. But not a word about Senator to be Tim Scott was uttered.

One would think that the “diversity” of this story alone would be of interest to the big networks. After all, we have a female Governor who is the daughter of Sikh immigrants appointing the only African American to the Senate. We also have a Senate seat that is famed for having once been occupied by Strom Thurmond, a one-time Dixiecrat, segregationist turned repentant Republican. And we have the first black Senator from a southern state since Blanche Bruce of Mississippi in 1881. This is almost “diversity” overload.

Perhaps one mitigating factor for the old networks is that all of this “diversity” was wrought by Republicans?
