Big Investor Bailing From Support of Newsweek Daily Beast

-By Warner Todd Huston

You may recall the big publishing story of 2010 when stereo equipment magnate Sidney Harman bought financially troubled Newsweek Magazine for $1 in the hopes of revitalizing the venerable old publication into the “thought leader” it once was. Now, since Mr. Harman’s death, his family seems poised to bail on the old man’s publishing charity case and the left-leaning Daily Beast website it is coupled with.

Since Sydney Harman bought Newsweek and took controlling interests in the Daily Beast, neither has become a profitable venture. This has caused the Harman family to re-think their position.

Now, the Harman family has announced that it is pulling back and has stopped investing in the Newsweek Daily Beast joint venture with Barry Diller’s InterActiveCorp (IAC).

For Team Obama, Old Media Goes on Attack Against Small Businessman Featured in Romney Ad

-By Warner Todd Huston

The message from the Old Media to Romney backers is that anyone daring to oppose Barack Obama better be prepared for the full weight of the Obama-friendly press to come down upon you. This is what small businessman Jack Gilchrist discovered after appearing in a Mitt Romney for President TV ad.

Gilchrist owns a small business in New Hampshire called Gilchrist Metal Fabricating, a company run by himself, his father and his son.

The small businessman agreed to be in Romney’s ad because he feels that President Obama is simply against the business sector.

After a clip of Obama’s now notorious Continue reading

NPR’s Totenberg Says Bankers and Businessmen are ‘Super Crooked’

-By Warner Todd Huston

National Public Radio’s Nina Totenberg appeared on the July 20 episode of PBS’s Inside Washington when the discussion turned back to Obama’s attack on American businesses and those successful enough to become a target of the his ire. But Totenberg wasn’t going for any blame being assigned to Obama. To her the problem isn’t Obama’s attack on the business sector, but that bankers and businessmen who are “super-crooked.”

When asked if she thought Obama’s tax-the-rich election ploy was going to work, Totenberg thought it would, saying the problems we face are not the President’s fault and his attacks on the business sector are justified.

BBC Chief Admits He ‘Got It Wrong’ For Lack of Coverage of Murders of Jewish Family

-By Warner Todd Huston

BBC Chief Mark Thompson admitted openly that his network “got it wrong” in its initial dearth of coverage of the mass murder in the West Bank of a Jewish family, killed by Palestinians.

When the massacre of five members of the Fogel family happened back in March the captive British audience that tax-supported BBC sometimes deigns to cater to were left practically uninformed about the incident. As more Brits every week began to discover news of the murders from foreign news sites criticism of the BBC began to mount.

Murdered was Udi and Ruth Fogel, sons Yoav (age 11) and Elad (4), and daughter Hadas (only three months). The family was slaughtered in their beds as they slept in their home. Their throats were cut, they had been stabbed through their hearts, and father Udi was decapitated. The incident was discovered later by a daughter who wasn’t home at the time.

Naturally, Palestinians were elated by this vicious act and were reported to have celebrated by passing out candies to children.

Tax Supported NPR Hires Lobbyists to get More Tax Money

-By Warner Todd Huston

This may sound like a contradiction, but tax-supported National Public Radio is hiring more lobbyists to help get more tax dollars sent its way.

In what many see as a parasitic relationship, NPR is using tax dollars to hire the big lobbying firm of Navigators Global charging them with the duty of keeping the spigot of federal funds open in the face of the spending cuts being talked about in Washington.

NPR feels the need to look out after its interests as House Republicans are advancing a spending bill through committee that would defund the public broadcasting service.

NY Daily News: Second Amendment Supporters Guilty of Murder in Colorado

-By Warner Todd Huston

In a July 21 column by the editorial board of the New York Daily News, there is fault assigned for the massacre in a Colorado theater. The fault is not just assigned to killer James Holmes, but absurdly to Obama, Romney, the NRA and every American that wants to protect the Constitution of the United States. That’s not too much hyperbole, is it?

This extreme, even silly, piece can be considered no less than a screed, an attack on nearly everyone but the man who pulled the trigger on that horrible night. The blame is cast so broadly as to seem idiotic, making the whole editorial something to dismiss instead of something to ponder.

To the editorial board of the NY Daily News, not only is Obama “standing at Holme’s side” as he “sprayed bullets and buckshot into a crowded movie theater” but so was Mitt Romney, the NRA and its President, and every American “zealot” for the Second Amendment.

“In a vain claim of innocence,” the NY Daily News accuses, “the fanatics will say Holmes is a monster and a maniac, that he fired and fired and fired as a man possessed. Each protestation clamps their fingers with his around the trigger.”

Any American interested in the Constitution and the Second Amendment is a gripped by “conscienceless extremism” that dismisses mass killings as if they are but a “fatal highway pileup,” the editorial cries.

MSNBC Denounces Fox Criticism of Al Sharpton

-By Warner Todd Huston

Execs at MSNBC recently attempted to refute Sean Hannity’s claim that their host Rev. Al Sharpton “rushed to judgment” in the case of George Zimmerman who was arrested in April for the shooting of Florida teen Trayvon Martin.

During his July 18 interview of the accused Zimmerman, Sean Hannity said that Al Sharpton and others rushed to judgment, spreading “misinformation” about the case before anyone could even ascertain any facts about the incident.

Look at what happened in this case because it became so public. Spike Lee is tweeting out what he thinks is your home address, the Reverend Al Sharpton and NBC News tries to use this case to bring up the issue of racial profiling. What do you say to Spike Lee? — didn’t know the facts of the case, they hadn’t been revealed — what do you say to Al Sharpton and those who rushed to judgment? What do you think their motives were?

For his part Zimmerman felt that those that made accusations and assertions about the case before any facts could emerge owed him an apology.

But on Friday, July 20, MSNBC announced that there would be no apology because their man, Al Sharpton, didn’t rush to judgment.

After Days Big Networks/CNN Finally Notice Obama’s ‘You Didn’t Build That’ Remarks

-By Warner Todd Huston

Strangely enough it took four to five long days for CNN and the big three networks to notice that Obama told his audience at a Virginia campaign rally that business owners and other successful Americans aren’t responsible for their own success. Worse, it took advisors for Mitt Romney to comment before these news organizations deigned to report on the incident.

In Roanoke, Virginia on Friday, July 13, the President said to business owners, “If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen,” causing an uproar on both sides of the aisle as Republicans expressed shock at Obama’s comments and liberals defended the President’s anti-business remarks.

Obama’s off-script comments, alternately considered a gaffe and his true feelings emerging, quickly became the talk of the Internet and talk radio. But ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN don’t seem to have uttered a word about the controversy until days later.

Roger Ebert Tries to Exploit Colorado Crime for Gun Control Purposes

-By Warner Todd Huston

Dear Mr. Ebert, the Colorado theater was a ‘gun free zone’

Jumping on the gun-ban band wagon and to take political advantage of the murders in Colorado, film critic Roger Ebert immediately ran to his keyboard to decry our “insane” gun laws in an Op Ed in the New York Times. His goal was to invalidate concealed carry laws by noting that no one in the theater shot back at the murderer in black. But, Ebert misses an important point. The Cinemark theater chain has a “gun-free zone” policy.

In the NYT, Ebert decried America for its gun laws (my bold).

That James Holmes is insane, few may doubt. Our gun laws are also insane, but many refuse to make the connection. The United States is one of few developed nations that accepts the notion of firearms in public hands. In theory, the citizenry needs to defend itself. Not a single person at the Aurora, Colo., theater shot back, but the theory will still be defended.

Of course, if Ebert had bothered to check before trying to use this murderous crime for his own anti-Second Amendment purposes, he may have found that no one could have shot back because the theater chain does not allow its customers to carry guns in its theaters.

TNT Series: Motherhood, Marriage is ‘Miserable’

-By Warner Todd Huston

TNT Cable network chose to ridicule motherhood, motherhood activism, marriage, and large families all at once on its latest episode of the cop-dramaedy series Rizzoli & Isles. The episode showed once again the disdain with which traditional motherhood and marriage is viewed in the entertainment industry.

On the July 17 episode two well-known psychologists are murdered setting the stage for the investigation. The heroes of the show, Rizzoli, a police detective, and Isles, a medical examiner, discover that the victims are advocates of childless families and had a history of activism against childbirth. Naturally, the first suspect the police in the show light upon is a woman that featured the anti-child psychologist on her pro-motherhood website.

The police look over this motherhood advocate’s website to find that her organization is called, Women Are About Kids. Yes, the acronym is WAAK, because, well, you know, anyone that is pro-family is whacked, right? The website also features a cross-hairs targeting symbol over the face of the murdered anti-child psychologist. Because, well, you know, all those violent conservatives use crosshairs on their enemies.

Shock: CNN’s Gay-Supporting Panel Agrees, Gays Should Attack the Boy Scouts

-By Warner Todd Huston

Well, here’s a shocker. Soledad O’Brien’s gay-supporting panel on her CNN morning show, Starting Point, all agreed that gay advocates should attack the Boy Scouts of America for its recently renewed decision to exclude gay men from serving as scout leaders.

On its July 18 show, the entire CNN panel fell all over themselves to hero worship guest gay activist Zach Wahls, telling him how great he was and openly encouraging him to go after the Boy Scouts for its decision.

Panel member Margaret Hoover cooed, “I’m a big fan. I’ve followed you for a little while. You’re a wonderful spokesman for the effort for equality.” Democrat strategist and gay rights advocate Richard Socarides — who incidentally is never called a Democrat strategist and consultant on the show — was star struck telling Wahls that he’s “done great work.” Soledad herself quickly agreed with Socarides when he said Wahls has done great work. “Yeah, he certainly has,” she interjected.

Seeking “balance” on this panel, O’Brien had Hoover, noted above, and Will Cain, but both these folks are known as gay rights advocates. Hoover is even active in the gay conservative group GoPoud.

In other words there wasn’t a single member of the Starting Point panel that would have felt themselves disposed to come to the support of the Boy Scouts.

Obama Tells Audience ‘Paralegals’ Will Help Fainters, Media Mum

-By Warner Todd Huston

Remember how they were all too stupid to know what they were talking about? Not like Obama, right? Why he’s the smartest guy in the room… any room. Why he even knows that “paralegals” are on hand to help those who might faint at one of his campaign appearances. Well, that is what he said.

So what did Obama do? Well, he was at a campaign stop in Roanoke, Virginia and, as so many Obama-struck attendees are wont to do, there was fainting. From the podium, Obama said that he’d get some “paralegals” to come help.

Does Obama not know the difference between a “paralegal” and a “Paramedic”?

Brian Ross of ABC ‘News’ Politicizes Colorado Shooting, Illicitly Blames Tea Party

-By Warner Todd Huston

The awful crime in Colorado was only hours old when Brian Ross, a so-called “journalist” from ABC News, immediately began to politicize the shooting attempting to blame the crime on the Tea Party, conservatives, Republicans, and anyone from the right side of the political aisle with whom he disagrees quite despite the fact that he really had no information that might point to his political enemies.

On ABC’s Good Morning America, anchor George Stephanolpoulos took a “report” from ABC’s Chief Investigator Brian Ross who was supposedly investigating the crime. Here is what Ross said,

There’s a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado, page on the Colorado Tea party site as well, talking about him joining the Tea Party last year. Now, we don’t know if this is the same Jim Holmes. But it’s Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado.

First of all the name James Holmes is not a very exotic name. Many, many James Holmes live in the Aurora area. A quick search of the White Pages online finds at least five James Holmeses in Aurora and at least a half dozen in Denver and over thirty in the state.

Yet, Brian Ross immediately stampedes to a Colorado Tea Party webpage in hopes of finding the name James Holmes, then, finding one, he runs to the camera to blame the Tea party without taking even a second to ascertain if the James Holmes on the Tea Party website is, or even could be the Colorado theater murderer.

This is how the left-wing, anti-American, anti-truth Old Media works. Lies pass for “facts,” political agendas replace the news, and hate for anything they disagree with guides their every thought and action. You go out, you lie about your enemies allowing the narrative to take hold in order to hurt your political opposites, then, when it inevitably turns out that your supposition is wrong, you put a “correction” somewhere in the back of a newspaper where no one will ever see it. Your lies are now out there and believed by many apparently to spite the truth. That is how Democrats and the left work.

AP Misleads: Perry Did NOT Call for Romney to Release Tax Returns

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Associated Press does it again, falsely reporting something that might tend to make Mitt Romney look bad. This time, with a headline that screams, “Perry calls on Mitt Romney to release tax returns,” the AP garbles the story of Texas Governor Rick Perry’s comments about Romney’s tax returns. Contrary to the AP, Perry made no such call on Romney, however.

We should be suspicious of the initial AP report right off because it doesn’t contain a single, actual quote from Gov. Perry. Here is how the AP report begins:

Texas Gov. Rick Perry is calling on fellow Republican and former rival Mitt Romney to release his tax returns.

Perry said anyone running for office should make public as much personal information as possible to help voters decide.

The report goes on with a bit of padding but also notes that “Romney has come under increasing pressure” for not releasing more tax return information, a demand that itself is nonsense.

Chicago Tribune Journalism Offshoring Scandal Ends

-By Warner Todd Huston

For months the Chicago Tribune has been suffering the slings and arrows of local critics for having hired a web-based company called Journatic (pronounced Jer-naa-tik) to write many of its small, “hyper local” stories for its Trib Local newspapers.

Critics lambasted the stories after it was discovered they were written by writers in the Philippines for 35 cents per piece — people that had never even heard of the Chicago suburbs they were writing about. Another big reason the Trib was so mercilessly mocked is because the stories often carried fake bylines with American names instead of the names of the Filipino writers that really wrote them.

It seemed to be a matter of integrity, to be sure. Stories written by foreigners but with fake American bylines seemed too much like calling a computer troubleshooting call-center in India and getting a thick-accented phone tech claiming to be “Linda in Omaha.”

Washington Post Falsely Claims Rush Limbaugh Said Batman Movie Bad Guy is ‘Liberal Attack’ on Romney

-By Warner Todd Huston

It’s another case of newspaper columnists claiming someone they’ve never listened to in their lives is talking trash against them. This time it is Paul Farhi for the Washington Post who on July 17 claimed that Rush Limbaugh said that the super villain in the new Batman movie is a “liberal attack on Romney.”

Farhi’s headline reads, “Rush Limbaugh claims ‘Dark Knight’ movie is liberal attack on Romney,” but the truth is, of course, that Rush, did not say that the terrorist character Bane in the soon-to-debut Batman movie is meant as an underhanded slap at Mitt Romney. He just didn’t.

My guess is that Farhi only briefly scanned the transcript of Rush’s comments about the Batman movie made during his July 17 show because tone is telling when you actually hear the Rush’s comments as I did when the show was going on. Rush was not saying that the movie was planned as an attack on Mitt but that some pundits were making such a claim that day. He was also ambivalent on the whole thing, not claiming to have fully accepted the idea himself.

Hey, Media, The House Did NOT Vote to Repeal Obamacare 33 Times

-By Warner Todd Huston

By the way, we missed this last week when the House voted to repeal Obamacare, but you may recall that the Old Media went bonkers to tell everyone that the July 11 vote was the “33rd time the Republicans voted to repeal Obamacre.” Only there is a little problem with that claim. It isn’t true.

The fact is, the House has only voted twice — not 33 times — to repeal Obamacare in its entirety. And the two times includes the July 11 vote.

Regardless of the truth, though, we were treated to media outlet after media outlet parroting the “33rd vote to repeal” narrative and acting as if it were the truth.

One example is Daniel Akst of Newsday, who scolded Republicans for this repeal attempt. “Despite a host of pressing national problems, House Republicans today voted for the 33rd time to repeal President Obama’s health care law,” Akst scornfully wrote.

Akst’s partisan, skewed those-evil-Republicans narrative was the one most media outlets went with.

Disgraced NPR Chief Picked to Head New NBC News Digital

Proving that no misdeed goes unrewarded on the left, reports have it that once Microsoft and NBC News break up housekeeping and put an end to MSNBC.com in its current form, the resulting new Internet outlet will be getting a new chief. And that new chief will be none other than Vivian Schiller, the disgraced former head of National Public Radio (NPR).

You may remember Vivian Schiller for her bungled firing of the NPR commentator Juan Williams back in 2010.

The Juan Williams mess wasn’t the only thing that Schiller mishandled while chief of NPR. She was also involved in the tap dancing the publicly funded radio outlet performed when independent citizen journalists Shaughn Adeleye and the anonymous “Simon Templar” plied an undercover camera that caught NPR execs agreeing to take millions in donations from what they understood to be the Muslim Brotherhood, as well known terror outfit from the Middle East.

HBO’s ‘Newsroom’ Being Programmed by Soros-Funded Think Progress?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Left-wingers are hailing HBO’s new series The Newsroom happily proclaiming it as The West Wing for the 2010s. Like The West Wing, this new show is penned by liberal activist and TV producer Aaron Sorkin. But, wait. Who is writing it? According to Sorkin’s writing team, it seems as though the George Soros-funded, extremist website Think Progress is doing the heavy lifting for team Sorkin.

The episode for Monday, July 9 was a Tea Party bashing extravaganza filled with all sorts of smears of Tea Partiers, of Rep. Michele Bachmann and all things conservative. During this same episode one of the characters favorably mentions Soros-funded Think Progress. This caused TP operative Adam Peck to take to his Twitter account to thank Sorkin and his writers for giving his website a plug.

In reply, the co-author of that night’s episode, Gideon Yago, replied to Peck’s Tweet saying that the website’s “reporting and archiving was vital to the research we did.”

I like how he put that. “Research.” In other words, they merely did a word search on the Think Progress website and that served as their “research.” The TV writers essentially allowed Think Progress to do the work for them.

NY Times Gives Obama a Pass on Outrageous Claim That Romney’s a ‘Felon’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Once again The New York Times lends its “paper of record” as a vehicle for Obama’s reelection campaign by leaving out important parts of a story, parts that mitigate in favor of GOP candidate Mitt Romney.

Specifically, the Times is repeating the Obama claim that Romney committed some sort of fraud (team Obama says he’s a “felon”) for his work at Bain Capital, a charge that is false by any reading of the facts.

Yes, once again, The New York Times gives only one side of the story.

In a July 12 piece in The Caucus blog, Times reporter Michael D. Shear once again gave credence to the smear against Romney seen in the deeply flawed reporting of the Boston Globe, a story that appears to be little else but retaliation by the Globe against Romney.

New York Times Slams Romney on Foreign Finances, Ignores Democrats’

-By Warner Todd Huston

The New York Times is aghast that Mitt Romney won’t succumb to demands from Democrats and the Old Media that he release enough of his financial records to suit them. In particular, the Times worries over Mitt’s Swiss bank account and foreign investments. But while the paper beats Romney up for his finances they ignore recent reports of all the Democrats that have similar financial holdings.

The Gray Lady begins claiming that Romney has “upended” the tradition of Presidential candidates releasing their financial records and goes on paragraph after paragraph raising suspicions over Romney’s finances. The Times focuses especially on Mitt’s foreign interests — yet the Times hasn’t even a modicum of proof to support the fears.

But while the Times attacks Mitt for having financial investments and accounts in foreign nations, there is no sense of that well worn phrase that so many journalists claim is one of the Old Media’s most important charges: balance.

The Times slams Romney for his Swiss bank account, but there isn’t a peep of all the high profile Democrats that have similar foreign financial interests. I guess the Times doesn’t feel a need to “balance” any report that is taking Republicans to task.

Reuters Touts Obama’s Faux Tax Cuts

Reuters has apparently singed up on Obama’s communication team if its latest lovefest over his plans to favor America with “tax cuts” just in time for the January election campaign is any indication. It took four, count ’em four, Reuters reporters to come up with this one!

Reuters was pleased to note that Obama and the Democrats have now “plotted their legislative priorities for the months leading up to November’s elections” and, happy days, its tax cuts for the middle class. Of course, by that you can read “class warfare to continue to be used as a cynical campaign tool,” not that Reuters points out this truth.

Not only is Reuters pumped up about the beneficence of Obama and the Democrats who are so kind as to offer us those “middle-class tax cuts,” but the venerable news service also points out that those mean, dastardly Republicans “will not go along with” Obama’s kindness.

Buzzfeed Misleads on Job Loss of U.S. Merchant Marine, Blames Tea Party

-By Warner Todd Huston

Now that Congress passed and the President signed the highway bill, Buzzfeed has jumped in to decry the loss of as many as 10,000 jobs in the U.S. overseas shipping sector. Naturally, since it’s Buzzfeed we’re talking about here, only the left side of the story is being told. Worse, Buzzfeed tries to pin this “job loss” on the Tea Party — as if millions of Tea Partiers nation wide are dead set on causing job loss to our Merchant Marines.

For Buzzfeed, former The Hill employee John Stanton seems to have simply rejiggered a Democrat Party press release to cry about the “jobs loss” he and the left think they see in the Highway bill. He spends no time at all worrying about any Republican response, quotes only Democrats, and also seems to be just regurgitating press releases from lobbyists for the Merchant Marine. Of course, there really isn’t any explanation of what really happened.

One of the claimed “unexpected” results of the highway bill, Stanton tells us, was the reduction in federal funding of the shipping by sea of foreign food aid. Until this bill, 75% of this food aid was shipped aboard American ships. The new bill cuts that to 50% for a savings of some $108 million a year in taxpayer’s funds.

This, Buzzfeed says, is a result of those darn Tea Partiers being so staunchly against earmarks.

Buzzfeed’s Hastings Slams Dinesh D’Souza as ‘A Hack’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Apparently Buzzfeed’s Michael Hastings has trouble understanding the discourse of the deeper philosophical concepts in which author Dinesh D’Souza has engaged over the years and, like many people that don’t understand something, he just waves off D’Souza’s work as “loony tunes” stuff.

On a recent appearance on the little seen Current TV show The Young Turks with host Cenk Uygur, Hastings attacked best selling author D’Souza as a “hack” writer, one that “lives in a fantasy world” based on his various books on such high concepts as the existence of life after death and how the cultural left bears some responsibility for the attacks on Sept. 11. Hastings so ridiculously and childishly over simplified D’Souza’s points that one might wonder who is the real hack, D’Souza or Hastings?

Hastings slammed D’Souza for not only being a graduate of Dartmouth, but for being crazy enough to believe in religion and for thinking that the cultural left might be a bad influence in the U.S. (Transcript below)

Fmr Media Matters Hack Says Romney Too White for Black Voters

-By Warner Todd Huston

Now we have to ask, who is using the race card in this presidential campaign again? Is it Republicans? Is it Governor Romney? Nope. You got it, it’s the left as we see again with the efforts of a former operative of Soros-funded Media Matters and some of his Old Media pals who have created a video saying that Mitt Romney is too white to appeal to black voters. So much for that new tone, eh?

Just in time to diss Romney before he speaks to a gathering of the NAACP, a liberal advocacy group made up of four long-time left-wing media operatives is attempting to turn blacks against Romney apparently because being white somehow makes it impossible for them to vote for him.

Set up as a faux meeting of Romney’s advisers, the video goes on to bash Mormonism, to claim that Republicans want to disenfranchise blacks and young voters, and that Republicans are perpetrating racism against Obama, not to mention holding birtherism against the Massachusetts Governor despite that Romney has never agreed with the birth certificate questions.

The video begins with a faux advisor who is presented as the guy that created the Willie Horton ads in 1988 for George H.W. Bush. This character tries to advise the Governor how to talk to the NAACP. Eventually he ends up saying that Romney is so white that he “makes Wonder Bread look like pumpernickel.”

“Let me be clear about something, this is not about the blacks. Now Governor you are a very nice man, you are a very nice white man. You are so white, you are extremely white. You make Wonder Bread look like pumpernickel,” the pretend Romney advisor says.

-By Warner Todd Huston

The journalist Buzzfeed assigned to cover Barack Obama for this campaign season, Michael Hastings, recently took to his Twitter account to claim that “neocons” are gay. I guess accusing people of being homosexual is what passes for serious journalism these days.

Hastings was responding to a Tweet by Richard Grenell, who was taunting the Buzzfeed journo. You may recall that Grenell is an openly gay Republican who served in the George W. Bush administration and for a time was on Mitt Romney’s advisory team.

In his Tweet, Grenell said, “Aren’t u covering Obama for BuzzFeed? Put your big boy pants on & get to work. MT @mmhastings: a “duck call” for trolls.”

In reply, Hastings went for the very name calling tactic that liberals say should never be used: he called Grenell and “neocons” gay.

@RichardGrenell ric, your tweets often appear to reveal insecurities about your own masculinity. is that a neocon thing?

Hastings’ Tweet has caused eyebrows to raise.

Boston Globe Lifts Bad Info From Other Sources on Romney’s Bain Tenure

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Boston Globe wanted readers to think it had a scoop on its Bain Capitol story on July 12. But in the story claiming Romney is lying about leaving Bain in 1999, the Boston Globe not only used the work of other publications and did so without attribution (we call that plagiarism) but, on top of that, the sources used are simply wrong in the claim that Romney stayed at Bain three years after he said he left. It’s all around newspaper fail.

The Boston Globe was excited to push its story (subscription required), a tale of gotcha journalism where the GOP candidate was “proven” to have lied about saying he left Bain Capitol in 1999. The Globe claims they “found” evidence that he was actually there, actively managing the company until as late as 2002. If this were true, Romney wouldn’t just be a liar but he’d also be in trouble with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Says the Boston Globe,

Mitt Romney has repeatedly sought to distance himself from some business dealings at Bain Capital by asserting that he left the firm in February 1999, but a review of public records shows that his authority lingered for three more years as Bain repeatedly listed him on government filings as the man in charge. Until 2002, when Romney and Bain Capital finalized a severance agreement, he remained the firm’s “sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer and president,” according to SEC documents. The description was applied even to the creation of five new Bain partnerships a full three years after Romney has said he relinquished all control.

If this were all true, it would be a pretty bad thing for the candidate. Fortunately for Mitt and unfortunately for the screaming headline of the Boston Globe, it isn’t true. Mitt really did stop managing Bain Capitol in 1999 when he left the company to take over the struggling Winter Olympics.

Even FactCheck.org, no friend to Republicans, has debunked claims that Romney was actively controlling Bain after 1999. The Obama campaign has repeatedly claimed that Obama managed Bain after 1999, but FactCheck says Obama is all wet.
