CNN Anchor Criticizes God for Sandy Hook Massacre

-By Warner Todd Huston

Trying to figure out how to deal with the massacre of children at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newton, Connecticut is no easy task. For reporters, “dealing” isn’t supposed to be the goal, reporting is. But for CNN’s Ashleigh Banfield, reporting is of less interest than placing blame even to the point of blaming God for the crime.

On December 19, the CNN anchor interviewed Rabbi Shmuley Boteach ostensibly to discuss the lack of reverence for God in American schools. Banfield reported that some blame this lack of reverence for setting the stage for these sorts of crimes.

During the segment, Banfield quoted the head of the American Family Association, Bryan Fischer, who said that one reason this massacre happened is that “we’ve kicked God out of out of the public school system.” This, Banfield editorialized, was an outrage.

Chris Matthews: ‘Outlaw Semi-Automatic Weapons’

-By Warner Todd Huston

On the December 18 broadcast of his MSNBC show, Hardball, Chris Matthews gave us a perfect example of the outright ignorance about how firearms work that the left media exhibits on a daily basis. Matthews thought he had a brilliant point when he said we should “outlaw semi-automatic weapons.”

In a discussion with a U.S. Senator, Matthews proposed his brilliant “solution” to the ills of the Second Amendment.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: It’s not hopeless, though. You talked about the Second Amendment. But, look, back in 1934 we had Machine Gun Kelly and all the guys out in Chicago. We had the whole Prohibition era encouraging a certain kind of crime; rum-running, etc. Here’s the question. Back then, the Congress had the guts to outlaw automatic weapons, machine guns, basically they did. They’re heavily regulated, heavily regulated, almost to the point of you don’t find them around. Here’s the question: why can’t Congress do the same thing to semi-automatics? I know we’ve got millions of them, whatever. Can’t we start to regulate? We don’t have to regulate a shotgun or a regular pistol with a revolver or anything. But if you go into the semi-automatic level, why don’t we say, that’s like the automatic weapon. Just go for that. Courts would have to approve it. Cause they approved the earlier one, didn’t they? Isn’t there a precedent?

The problem is, of course, that a “semi-automatic” weapon does not really make a gun more powerful or necessarily more dangerous than any other weapon. The thing is, a small caliber, less powerful weapon can be just as fully “semi-automatic” as a larger caliber weapon. It isn’t solely the mechanism that makes the gun more powerful.

A semi-automatic weapon is designed to eject an empty or fired shell casing and automatically load another cartridge into the firing chamber. But a semi-automatic also calls for the user to pull the trigger to fire it every time he wants to fire a shot. In other words, all it does is load the cartridge. It doesn’t fire the thing until the trigger is pulled again. Only a fully automatic weapon continues to fire with one pull of the trigger. A semi-automatic does not spew bullets everywhere with a single pull of a trigger.

Appointment of Only African American Senator Unmentioned by ABC, CBS

-By Warner Todd Huston

On Monday, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley announced that she was appointing U.S. Congressman Tim Scott to the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Jim DeMint. When he is sworn in on January 3, Scott will be the lone African American of either party in the Senate but this historic news didn’t seem to interest ABC or CBS as neither mentioned the news that night.

Unsurprisingly, both ABC and CBS had segments on gun control during their respective Monday, December 17 broadcasts. But not a word about Senator to be Tim Scott was uttered.

One would think that the “diversity” of this story alone would be of interest to the big networks. After all, we have a female Governor who is the daughter of Sikh immigrants appointing the only African American to the Senate. We also have a Senate seat that is famed for having once been occupied by Strom Thurmond, a one-time Dixiecrat, segregationist turned repentant Republican. And we have the first black Senator from a southern state since Blanche Bruce of Mississippi in 1881. This is almost “diversity” overload.

Perhaps one mitigating factor for the old networks is that all of this “diversity” was wrought by Republicans?

Ohio Progressive Radio Station Fails, Blames Obama?

-By Warner Todd Huston

WVKO, a left-wing radio station in Columbus, Ohio, is going under. Even after being the dutiful soldiers for team Obama the station can’t pay its bills. And as the station goes down the tubes they are pointing fingers. At Obama!

Talkers Magazine recently posted the announcement that WVKO, Ohio’s Progressive Radio, will cease operations for 2013. The station will replace the progressive shows with a new Gospel format.

“In a post at the station’s website, Richards spreads the blame around to everyone from the Obama campaign to local advertisers,” Talkers says.

Boy did WVKO’s Richards “spread the blame,” too. On the station’s website, it is a veritable whinefest.

The Many Sandy Hook Mistakes of The New York Times

-By Warner Todd Huston

As we mentioned early on December 15, the Old Media have done a poor job relating the facts about the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newton, Connecticut. Finally, some four days after the crime occurred, The New York Times is issuing corrections on a multitude of garbled reports.

Some of the corrections are updating the sort of “facts” that most of Old Media establishment got wrong; such as who the shooter actually was and whether or not the killer’s mother worked at the school. But many of the “facts” that The Times had to correct don’t even stand the test of logic.

For instance, The Times originally reported that the guns being used were .10 and a .9 millimeter guns. This would be about the size of a pencil lead! Of course what the paper of record really meant to say is that 10 and 9 millimeter sized bullets were used, not a .10 and .9.

In another case The Times misquoted New York Governor Michael Bloomberg. And so, the correction reads,

Indianapolis Religious Radio Host on Tim Scott: ‘Black Only in Skin Color’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Tim Scott has been appointed to fill the South Carolina Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Jim DeMint and immediately the racebaiters jumped in with both feet to attack him. One of the early hatemongers was Amos Brown, a host on a religious radio station in Indianapolis, Indiana. Brown resorted to his Twitter account to claim that African American Tim Scott isn’t really a black man.

It has been reported that South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley will appoint Tim Scott, an African American, to fill DeMint’s seat. Scott is, of course, a Republican just like Governor Haley. All one need be is a black man in the GOP and the hatemongers come out in force with their racist name calling and radio host Amos Brown rose early to the rote attack.

On his Twitter account (@Amoswtlcindy), Brown wrote,

Mr. Amos Brown calls himself a man of God and works for AM 1310, “The Light,” a religious station that caters to the African American community in Indianapolis, Indiana.

NBC’s Chuck Todd Calls More Gun Restrictions ‘Middle Ground’

-By Warner Todd Huston

NBC White House correspondent Chuck Todd feels that the crime at Sandy Hook school in Newton, Connecticut should give rise to a new “middle ground with the National Rifle Association,” meaning that more gun control is somehow in the middle.

Of course, this is nothing else but a rhetorical trick as the basis of the phrase assumes that the NRA must come toward more gun control because that is what would make such a compromise the “middle ground.”

Todd did not note that the issue of firearms is a Constitutional question and instead focused on the debate as if gun control issues were merely an act of legislations or regulations as opposed to a civil rights issue.

That isn’t the only trick Todd employed. Another one of those rhetorical tricks is to focus on “assault weapons” as the problem, but the truth is there is no such thing as an “assault weapon,” at least not legally. The term is general and does not define any particular weapon or any particular type of weaponry. Using the phrase “assault weapon” does not inform the news consumer, as it is practically meaningless and is little but emotionally tinged rhetoric.

Todd employed these rhetorical tricks on MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews during the December 17 broadcast.

Dereliction: A Constant Stream of Media Misinformation in Conn. Shooting

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Old Media establishment has done a disservice to an American public heartbroken over the murders at a Connecticut grade school by reporting untrue “facts” over and over again and by using emotionally tinged phrases that do not relay fact but instead push an agenda.

Here are just a few of the badly garbled “facts” in this story that the media rushed to “report” before any truth was put to them.

Of course, the very first major mix up was the shooter’s name. All across the Old Media the shooter was reported as “Ryan Lanza.” However, within hours we discovered that Ryan was the killer’s brother and the killer’s name is Adam.

Also from the beginning, the murderer was reported as having strode through the school with a .223-caliber rifle, often referred to by the media here as an “assault weapon.” This also turned out to be untrue. In fact, he only had handguns with him in the school, not any “assault rifle.” He did have a rifle but it was left in his car and not carried into the school.
(Addendum: And the “news” is still shifting back and forth about what guns this murderer had, what he used, what he left in the car… they still can’t get it right.)

Libs Immediately Politicize Conn. School Shooting

-By Warner Todd Huston

In their practice of “never letting a serious crises go to waste,” liberals didn’t even wait for the full story to be reported before using today’s shooting at a Connecticut school for political reasons.

CNN talk show host and British citizen Piers Morgan immediately took to his Twitter account to inject politics into the criminal actions in Connecticut demanding that the U.S. Constitution be altered to his satisfaction and urging President Obama to implement strict gun laws.

Some of Morgan’s tweets:

  • No more weasly words of ‘comfort’ Mr President. This is the latest, and worst, gun outrage on your watch. Time to act.
  • This is now President Obama’s biggest test – will he have the courage to stand up to the American gun lobby?
  • White House spokesman Jay Carney’s right – today’s not the day to debate gun control. YESTERDAY was the day to debate it.
  • Don’t just mourn these poor dead children America – get angry and do something to stop these senseless shootings happening.

Showing he doesn’t really understand any of what he’s talking about, Morgan also compared today’s shooting to the massacre in Dunblane, Scotland.

Success: Ted Turner Declares Wars ‘Over With’

-By Warner Todd Huston

In his best Fukuyama-like fashion, CNN founder Ted Turner has pronounced the end of war. Not only that, but he implies that the U.S. is the stupid country for refusing to abide by his prognosticating powers.

During a December 13 broadcast of CNN’s Newsroom, Turner made the sweeping pronouncement about the end of war assuring viewers that, “the big, intelligent, well-educated countries have already quit war.”

Proving he doesn’t know much about recent history, Turner even claimed that Russia doesn’t go to war any more because they are so “smart.” Say, Ted, don’t you remember when Russia invaded Georgia and killed so many citizens and soldiers from that former Soviet Republic? That was only four years ago, Ted.

Turner went on to indulge several more somewhat childlike proclamations. One was that either no one should be allowed to have nuclear weapons, or every country should have them — that’ll work well, eh?

In his brilliance, Turner said that if every country had nuclear weapons that would end proliferation. What can one say to that?

Silver: Pundits Are ‘Fundamentally Useless’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Nate Silver, who shot to political media stardom for successfully parsing the election polls, has been on a bit of a tour of various media outlets since his successful prediction of November’s election results. One of his recurring themes is that “journalism” is important but “punditry is fundamentally useless.”

Silver’s latest appearance was at the Wednesday, December 12 D.C. Talks event sponsored by Google where he discussed media and media bias.

Silver told the crowd that he felt that the term “momentum” in reporting electoral politics was necessarily a biased term because it was essentially meaningless. When reporters use the word, Silver said, they aren’t really describing anything real. “They’re talking about some tangible concept to assert that more is happening than really is happening,” he said.

Wash. Post Year in Cartoons: Majority Ridicule Romney/Republicans

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Washington Post has its year in review of the best political cartoons of 2012 posted this week. A review of the 56 cartoons shows that a majority of them attack Mitt Romney, Republicans or conservatives while only a small sampling make fun of Obama, members of his administration, or liberal ideas.

Many of these political cartoons are quite good for what they are, of course, a skewering of a shibboleth, left, right, or cultural. But out of the 56 cartoons presented, the vast majority of them attack the right.

Out of 56 cartoons, 28 of them hit at the right. 9 attack Mitt Romney directly, 6 attack the GOP or other GOP candidates — such as Newt Gingrich — and an additional 13 attack conservatives or center right cultural ideas.

Grudge Match: Reporters Asked to Decide Which Will Keep Job

-By Warner Todd Huston

It will be a merry Christmas for one of two reporters at the Kansas City Star. One of them will get to keep her job. The other? Welcome to Obama’s unemployment line. But there’s a twist. The KC Star has told both reporters to decide between the two of them who will stay and who will go.

The Star apparently told reporters, Karen Dillon and Dawn Borman that only one will still be employed into the new year. Management further informed the scribblers that they’d have to decide between them which will get the ax. Looks like it will be Christmas to the tune of Should I Stay Or Should I Go, by The Clash at the paper.

Dillion corroborated the unique personnel management technique but refused further comment. For her part, Borman completely refused to talk about her plight to her brethren in the media and it looks like she is the one hitting the bricks.

David Frum: 2nd Amendment Supporters ‘Enable Shootings’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Like all of us, David Frum of The Daily Beast was angered by the shootings in a Connecticut Grade School today. He was also angered by those 2nd Amendment supporters Tweeting him about the incident saying that he “won’t accept lectures” from “those who enable the shootings in the first place.”

Frum’s despair and anger over the incident is, of course, the proper emotional response to this crime. But, like many in the media, he also took this incident as an opportunity to discuss gun control.

The Daily Beast writer took to Twitter upon learning of the incident and his response was to needle concealed carry supporters saying,

Shooting at CT elementary school. Obviously, we need to lower the age limit for concealed carry so toddlers can defend themselves.

The author’s initial Tweet brought him the ire of conservatives when the Twitter-watching site Twitchy noticed his entry.

Buzzfeed: With Rice Out, Benghazi Scandal Now Over?

-By Warner Todd Huston

U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice came before the American people and served up the untrue story that the attacks on our embassy in Benghazi, Libya that killed four Americans was the result of some Youtube video. This false story seems to have helped torpedo her chances of being the next Secretary of State as today Rice pulled her name out of the running for the position. But, does her pulling her name from consideration somehow “end” the Benghazi scandal? Buzzfeed thinks it does.

According to Buzzfeed’s Zeke Miller, Rice pulling herself out of contention for the nomination as Obama’s next Secretary of State “effectively caps a three-month administration scandal over the Benghazi terrorist attack.”

Miller goes on to say that because the Republicans found “the scalp they’ve been seeking,” why, the whole thing is basically over.

Over? So, all the lies, the deaths, the lack of support for our embassy and support personnel that were killed is now all erased simply because Rice quit her hunt for Sec. State and the GOP “got a scalp”?

Miller does note that Republicans are vowing to continue the investigation into the major failures at Benghazi, but he feels that it will now continue “without the bloodthirst.”

Of course, Miller is viewing the Benghazi massacre that Americans suffered as merely some political witch-hunt as all Democrats do. This is little else but an effort to give Obama a pass on his disastrous foreign policy failure by dismissing the whole Benghazi affair as nothing but mere politics.

NBC’s Chuck Todd: Susan Rice a Victim of Conservative ‘Advocacy Media’

-By Warner Todd Huston

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice announced today that she was taking herself out of the running to be considered the next Secretary of State. To explain why she took herself out of the running, NBC’s Chuck Todd blamed it on “conservative advocacy media.” To Todd, it was nothing but a right-wing witch-hunt.

Todd appeared on MSNBC on Thursday and proclaimed that Rice was a victim because she didn’t have a “consulting team or a full PR team” at her disposal. I guess the White House wasn’t enough of a mega phone for her.

Todd basically claimed that Rice being lost to the President as a nominee for State was a conservative witch-hunt.

Media Ignores Union Violence: Flashback to Palin’s 2008 ‘Target’ Outrage

-By Warner Todd Huston

As unions again run amuck, this time in Michigan, the Old Media establishment has steadfastly refused to report on the union’s violence, not to mention the “violent rhetoric” coming from their advocates. But this is in stark contrast to the Summer of 2011 when the Old Media was hot to condemn the supposed “violent rhetoric” of Republicans such as Sarah Palin, Andrew Breitbart, and talk radio hosts.

In Michigan this week unions have once again shown why the term “union thug” is no misnomer by beating up people and engaging in property destruction, intimidation, and violence all in order to turn back Michigan’s right-to-work legislation passing through the state’s duly elected legislature.

During the day on Monday union goons attacked a tent set up by members of Michigan’s chapter of Americans for Prosperity. The tent was staffed with women and men, Michiganders who came out to support the Republican’s effort to pass worker’s rights legislation that would make The Wolverine State the 24th right-to-work state.

Also in attendance was occasional Fox News guest and comedian Steven Crowder. The young Crowder was actually physically attacked, punched at least four times, by one union criminal. Crowder’s crime? He dared to ask unionistas the simple question: “what is it about right-to-work that you oppose so much?”

The union thugs then swarmed AFP’s tent and tore it down with the women, and a few children, still inside.

500 Victims: Shocking BBC Sex Abuse Scandal Ensnares New York Times Chief

-By Warner Todd Huston

In a shocking tally, up to 500 people have come forward claiming to be victims of former British Broadcasting Corp. TV and radio star Jimmy Savile, British police have reported. The scandal has reached from the 1960s to today but has also reached across the ocean to the newly hired CEO of The New York Times, himself a former BBC executive.

New Times executive Mark Thompson was the most recent top man at the BBC of any long standing having served for eight years ending his tenure only this past September. Thompson resigned from the Beeb to come to America to take the helm of The New York Times just as the Jimmy Savile sex abuse scandal was developing.

In his pre-employment interviews, Thompson swore he had no knowledge at all about the decades of sexual abuse cases perpetrated by BBC TV star Jimmy Savile, many of which the BBC aided in covering up and hiding from both the police and the license-paying public.

But the latest news from the investigation into the Savile scandal raises questions about what Thompson knew and when he knew it and that timeline brings suspicion that he knew about the mounting scandal long before he told The New York Times that he did.

Huffington Post Misquotes Union Violence Victim, Steven Crowder

-By Warner Todd Huston

Huffington Post is being accused of purposefully misquoting Steven Crowder, the victim of violence perpetrated by union thugs during protests over Michigan’s worker’s rights legislation, and blaming Crowder for being attacked.

In a December 11 piece by Dave Jamieson, Huffington Post’s “workplace reporter,” Crowder is misquoted at least once. Worse, instead of having Crowder explain himself, his actions are “explained” by a union tough that was on the scene.

The whole story was “reported” from the union perspective and painted Crowder as a “provocateur” who’s main goal was “to get punched.”

The whole of the story was originally presented from the perspective of union member Ken Spitzley, a state agriculture department employee, who claimed he witnessed Crowder’s actions that day. According to Spitzley, Crowder was only there only to “provoke” the union thugs. “There was no question he was there just to start a fight, to start some kind of trouble,” Jamieson reports.

Deep Discussion: Barbara Walters Calls Chris Christie Fat, Slams Patraeus, Praises Hillary in Interview ‘Special’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Once again cultural lightweight Barbara Walters splashed across ABC with another one of her year-end Most Fascinating People interview extravaganzas. This time she enriched the public debate by talking about Chris Christie’s weight, tsk tsking David Patreaus and skipping the hard questions to slobber over Hillary Clinton and urge her to run for President. Cutting edge stuff.

In her segment with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, for instance, Walters spends the interview needling him on getting his own supporters mad for his blubbering embrace of President Obama who’s response to Hurricane Sandy sent the Governor into loving rhetoric just before the late election. Walters also brought up the important issue of Christie’s weight wondering if he was too fat to be a successful politician.

Calling her, “One of the most acclaimed Secretaries of State in modern history,” in her interview with Hillary, Walters skipped all those tough questions about Benghazi and instead star gazed into Hillary’s eyes and dreamily asked if she’ll run for president.

What was another one of Walters’ important questions to Hillary? “Your hair,” Walters said, before launching into and important, in depth discussion about Hillary’s coif. No, really.

Naturally, Walters went into former General David Petraeus and his year end troubles because he had a scandalous end to a once lustrous career. So, Walters spent her whole segment looking down her nose at the General.

MSNBC: An Unprofessional Excuse for the News

-By Warner Todd Huston

The violence that unions perpetrated in Michigan as the state legislature passed its new right-to-work legislation was hailed by lawless Democrats and union supporters alike showing that neither unions nor Democrats are much interested in morality of legality, but the incident also revealed yet another perfect example of how illegitimate MSNBC is as a source for reliable news.

During the union thugs’ protest outside the state capitol in Lansing, union criminals beat up a pro-worker’s rights advocate and destroyed a tent set up by the conservative activist group Americans for Prosperity. Multiple videos show that it was a spontaneous, criminal action by the union members but MSNBC’s coverage tended to run counter to the truth.

On the evening of December 11, Ned Resnikoff took to the cabler’s webpages to “report” on the incident for MSNBC’s The Ed Show. But instead of observing journalistic practice, instead of doing his job as a reporter, Resnikoff outrageously lied through his teeth and claimed that the AFP tent was really torn down by its own people!

Resnikoff posted the mere claims of a biased union member pretending that he knew that the AFP folks had torn down their own tent just to get publicity out of it all.

Weekly Standard’s Kristol Throws Up Hands, GOP Should ‘Acquiesce’ to Obama

-By Warner Todd Huston

William Kristol, Editor of the Weekly Standard, seems to have decided that retreat is the way forward for the Republican Party. In a new editorial that approaches a meltdown, the Fox commentator and consummate Washington insider essentially advised the GOP to just throw in the towel on these fiscal cliff talks and more or less accept Obama’s terms.

In the piece, a dour Kristol detailed all the shock and depression that Republican insiders feel after losing an election they’d all thought was in the bag for team Romney and then went on to complain that the GOP’s legislative scene isn’t any better than its failed electoral scheme.

Even the fact that the Republicans still control the House is cold comfort for Kristol.

Worst of all, Kristol grouses, the GOP has no “proposal for averting the fiscal cliff.”

So, what to do, what to do? Maybe just “acquiesce” to Obama and be done with it?

TIME’s Best Places to Live Does Not Include Any in the USA

-By Warner Todd Huston

TIME has one of those lists that we always start to see as the year comes to a close. This one is the top ten best and worst places in the world to live. Sadly, there isn’t a single place in the U.S.A. on that list.

The worst place to live on this list is, unsurprisingly, the disaster-prone (both man-made and natural-made) country of Haiti. Neither Yemen nor Iraq fare much better than Haiti. The rest of the top ten worst list is filled out with African nations — again, unsurprisingly.

But it’s the best-places list that disappoints the red, white and blue as not one of the best places in the world in which to live are in the good ol’ U. S. of A.

The “Best Quality of Living” list is:

  1. Vienna, Austria
  2. Zurich, Switzerland
  3. Auckland, New Zealand
  4. Munich, Germany
  5. Vancouver, Canada
  6. Dusseldorf, Germany
  7. Frankfurt, Germany
  8. Geneva, Switzerland
  9. Copenhagen, Denmark
  10. Bern, Switzerland

What is the deal? Why does this list diss the United States? In fact, the USA doesn’t even appear in the top 25 best places.

Old Media Fear Obama Excluding Them for 2nd Inauguration

The Old Media establishment is worried that Barack Obama is going to cut them out from his second swearing-in ceremony. As Politico reports, rumors abound that this time ’round Obama is going to hold a private ceremony, one not open to the media.

On Sunday, January 20, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts will perform the President’s swearing-in ceremony then Monday Obama will hold his public inauguration where he will be sworn in a second time in a symbolic gesture.

But Politico reports that some members of the inaugural committee have privately signaled to the press that Obama intends to exclude them from the Sunday ceremony — the one that really counts.

The White House Correspondents Association has already formally urged the Obama administration not to hold such a secretive swearing-in ceremony through a statement by issued Ed Henry, Fox News correspondent and the president of the White House Correspondents Association.

Pethokoukis was astounded by a Times article chronicling the steadily falling tax burden Americans have experienced since the 1980s.

Pethokoukis points out that some tax hike advocates think this means that America’s tax burden is too low and time has come for a hike. But Pethokoukis disagrees.

Obama Secretly Meets With His Old Media Propagandists

-By Warner Todd Huston

There was a secret, off-record meeting between President Obama and a passel full of extreme-left, so-called media folks last week. No, this isn’t black helicopters stuff. It really happened as the Washington Post admits.

None of these Old Media leftists are reporting what happened at the meeting, but none that have been outed, so-to-speak, for having been at the meeting are denying that they were there. They are just giving a “no comment” about what went on.

In attendance was the entirety of the MSNBC line-up. Matthews, Schultz, Maddow, the whole crew. Now, granted, these MSNBC people aren’t in any way journalists. They are pure propagandists that entertain with left-wing spin, not facts and truth. Ditto for Ariana Huffington and extremist activist Markos Moulitsas, both have admitted to being at the meeting. But many of the other participants are supposed to be real journalists.

Two of the so-called “real” journalists were Greg Sargent and Jonathan Capehart of the Washington Post. There were others but Whemple doesn’t list them by name in his Washington Post piece.

So, that raises many questions: What was said in that meeting? What was done? What assignments did the President hand out to his propagandists?

WaPost: Next Struggling Paper Planning Paywall

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Washington Post is poised to initiate a paywall in 2013. The Post is one of the last major American papers to look into putting some parts of its publication behind a subscriber only Internet screen.

The Wall Street Journal reports that The Washington Post is preparing a “metered paywall” for its Internet site. A metered paywall allows readers to see a few articles per month before blocking any more access and informing the visitor that he must pay to read further.

But ahead of this new attempt to improve revenue, ThePost has been seeing a steep decrease in earnings.

The Post is dealing with a steep decline in its core business of print advertising. Its newspaper division reported an operating loss of $56.3 million for the first nine months of the year, reflecting a 14% decline in revenue to $160.7 million. The company lost its chief revenue officer in the spring, and the search for a replacement continues.

The Post has seen quite a lot of trouble recently with a shake up in leadership as publisher Katherine Weymouth canned executive editor Marcus Brauchi and replaced him with the former editor of the Boston Globe, Marty Baron.

The Hill: No GOP Opposition to Speaker Boehner’s Turnabout on Tax Hikes

-By Warner Todd Huston

In a myopic report on the GOP’s half of the Fiscal Cliff debate, The Hill claimed there was no opposition to Republican House Speaker John Boehner’s sudden caving in to President Obama’s demand that tax hikes accompany any solutions to the budget mess.

The Hill reported on December 4 that the GOP was “moving reluctantly toward a debt deal that would increase revenues” and that Speaker Boehner had offered some $800 billion in new taxes in his most recent fiscal cliff proposal.

How could Boehner achieve this flip flopping away from the Party’s until-now stated principles? The Hill says it’s because there aren’t any Republicans opposing the tax hikes.

The lack of immediate backlash within the conference is a key early sign for Boehner, who has made intraparty unity a priority as he seeks the strongest possible hand in negotiations over the “fiscal cliff” with President Obama.

Of course, there could be a reason for this that The Hill doesn’t mention. Boehner is purging all conservatives from his power structure.
