Do Viewers Know About “Knowing”?

-By Frederick Meekins

Viewers wanting to see “Knowing” staring Nicholas Cage might expect a film not all that different from his “National Treasure” series or even perhaps “The Da Vinci Code” as from advertisements the story appears to center around an aged parchment with a series of numbers scribbled across it that seemingly predicts a series of disasters. However, by the film’s conclusion, the apocalyptic symbolism alluded to is much more complex and potentially confusing than one might initially suspect.

After a series of catastrophes Cage’s astrophysicist character witnesses as a result of deciphering the cryptic document, one begins to get the impression that the transcendent presence guiding events is more of a tangible one rather than a force in the background. Hints of this are introduced when mysterious figures reminiscent of less than normal looking versions of Men In Black begin to stalk Cage’s son as well as the granddaughter of the character who wrote down the prophetic string of numbers in a flashback set fifty years in the past.

In most films one usually gets a distinct impression as to the forces overseeing mankind’s eschatological destiny. Usually they are traditionally supernatural or more in the vein of what moviegoers would consider extraterrestrial or interplanetary. Seldom do I remember a film where the distinctions were blurred or melded to such a degree as in “Knowing”.

Four Videos Serve as Dose of Reality on Obamacare

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Heritage Foundation has four excellent videos each taking on an injurious and troublesome aspect of Obamacare that are a must view for those looking for ammunition with which to shoot down the president’s policies.

Rather than debate the substance, the White House is in full campaign mode in order to label any opposition to its government-heavy health reform agenda as “misinformation” or “myths you’ve heard.” Case in point: The White House now has a taxpayer-funded Web site to “reality check” credible criticisms and arguments. Problem is the videos “debunking” each “myth” are low on facts. See our response below.

First up is a video addressing the many millions that will lose their health insurance quite despite what the president keeps telling us. Far from being able to keep our insurance “if we like it,” the truth is that 88 million will lose their policies whether they like it or not upon the passage of Obamacare.

AP Doesn’t Report Whole Fox News Success Story

-By Warner Todd Huston

On August 16 the Associated Press published a story on the growing ratings success that Fox News is enjoying in this age of Obama. While all the facts that the AP reported are completely accurate, one key aspect of the Fox News ratings story was left out and it is an aspect that can materially affect the reader’s understanding of the story.

The headline sets the tone for the slight misinformation that can easily mislead: “With Obama in office, Fox News finds its stride.” The piece goes on to reveal that Fox is having a “strong year” in the ratings and quotes a former Fox News host as saying, “Fox is much more firmly established than it has ever been.”

Throughout the article, though, the AP continually pegs Fox’s ratings to Obama and healthcare and if one weren’t well informed of the history of Fox News one could easily get the impression that the cable newser was only having success because of opposition to Obama.

Headline Potpourri #3: Jackson Clones, Radical Profs, & Eldercide

-By Frederick Meekins

Barack Obama has taken on the role of chief booze peddler. Hoping to smooth over the controversy that has erupted over the arrest of Henry Louis Gates, the President has invited the professor and the arresting office to the White House for a beer. Given the professor’s temper, is it really a good idea to get him all liquored up?

Henry Louis Gates is hardly the harmless professor the media is making him out to be. Frankly, Gates is to the Ivy League what Jeremiah Wright is to ecclesiastical circles.

At Harvard, Gates is the director of the W.E.B Du Bois Institute for African & African American Research, named after a known Communist. According to a WorldNetDaily profile of this academic subversive, Gates has lured other leftist rabble rousers to campus such as Cornel West and advocates Afrosupremacist positions such as Affirmative Action, reparations, and liberation theology. If one is known for the company one keeps, Americans should be very concerned about what they have let into the White House.

Liberals Love to Write Conservatism’s Obituary

-By Warner Todd Huston

Did you know that the election of Barack Obama means that conservatism is dead forever more? The New Yorker thinks it is anyway. Its recent piece on the authors of the “Little House on the Prairie” series not only pronounces conservatism likely dead but also imagines the same fate for capitalism itself. This is just another example of how the self-congratulatory, isolated left constantly announces the death of capitalism and conservatism as it has been doing since FDR, our second most socialist president ever, came to power.

So how does one get from talking about the beloved children’s classic of rugged individualists eking out a living in the wild, wide-open wilderness to the announcement that capitalism and conservatism are dead? It’s the sort of trick that only a left leaning publication like the New Yorker can do and it does it well here.

As it happens, the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder and co-author of the “Little House” series, Rose Lane Wilder, was in her later life a high profile conservative or libertarian who hobnobbed with the likes of Ayn Rand. In the middle of the 20th century with their history of self-reliance, Rose and mother Laura shied away from the Democrats when FDR was elected because of he advocated statism. Rose Lane called FDR a “dictator” and decried the generous welfare programs that the Democrats were sponsoring.

Amid All the Celebrity Deaths, A Reality Check

-By Frank Salvato

Some have labeled the summer of 2009, the Summer of the Celebrity Death Watch, and one could successfully argue the point. Ed McMahon, Karl Malden, Farrah Fawcett, Billy Mays, David Carradine, Koko Taylor, Fred Travalena and, most notably, Michael Jackson – to name but a few off the top of my head – have all passed away over the course of June and July. While the mortality of a generation is always catalyst for priority re-evaluation and reflection, it is the caliber of “the catalyst” – those we have elevated to iconic status – that exposes just how superficial our American culture has become.

This is not to say that I don’t appreciate the successes and contributions, the talents and the prowess those who have passed over the last month and a half have shared with the world. As someone who was part of the entertainment industry in my youth, I certainly appreciate the talents of pitchmen, actors and musicians passed. And even though a few of those who are now celebrated had colorful and sometimes disturbing personal lives or political views that differed from mine, I am able to divorce the ugly flaws of man and political ideology (within reason) to appreciate the talents they shared with the world.

Harry Potter Fan Group Promotes Gay Marriage

-By Warner Todd Huston

Orlando Sentinel movie reviewer Roger Moore was excited to report on the efforts of some Harry Potter fans that want to “change the world” based on their interpretation of Potter character Dumbledore’s philosophy of life. He was happy, you see, because the group is all about “global transformation” and spreading global warming fears, gay marriage and the Employee Free Choice Act.

Moore writes abut a group called the Harry Potter Alliance whose website is a sort of Potter fan message board where fans write about what they are doing with their ideas on Potter philosophy. But, it goes “beyond the personal,” Moore approvingly says.

The Kicker of St. John’s Wood: A Book Review

-By David M. Huntwork

A rational person in a rational world should be able to say that the premise and storyline of the latest book by author Gary Wolf is silly, ridiculous, and prone to flights of fancy. Unfortunately, in the first decade of the 21st century the subject matter and conjecture found in the pages of The Kicker of St. John’s Wood is not so far-fetched and is indeed instead a remarkably accurate and reflective look at the forces, feelings and mindset of the modern-day Left.

It is a world in the not so distant future where the forces of the Left have saddled professional sports with quadriplegic referees, transgendered concessionaires and stuttering sportscasters. Now the festering forces of radical feminism have decided to launch a direct assault upon the blatantly oppressive, misogynist and patriarchal world of “maleness” that is professional football.

WaTimes writer Jennifer Harper gave me a ring the night that Michael Jackson died and asked for some reaction to the media coverage. I have no interest in Michael Jackson specifically. But, Harper’s angle was interesting. Read on music lover…

Death video, photos radiate as media, Internet go viral

By Jennifer Harper

It is shades of paparazzi past.

A photo of Michael Jackson, engulfed by an oxygen mask and lying in an ambulance, was made public Thursday afternoon, even before his death was officially announced. Footage of Mr. Jackson’s body being moved from hospital to morgue was trailed overhead by a TV station helicopter, as if the crew were following a police chase or tracking a celebrity wedding.

“It’s truly the coarsening of our culture. It’s the Princess Diana syndrome. Can you remember a time in the past when morbid photos of celebrities were spread all over the place for all to see?” said Warner Todd Huston, a media analyst with Newsbusters.com and publiusforum.com.

“It is driving us down the road of bad taste and poor judgment. Some of it has to do with our culture of communication. You have to know things right this minute. Now. On Twitter, or on the screen. People are not willing to be reflective at a time like this, which deserved solemnity,” Mr. Huston said.

Robert Lichter, director of the Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Mason University, said he “wouldn’t be surprised if we see the autopsy photos….

This Isn’t The Future We Were Promised

-By Ann “Babe” Huggett

Way back when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, way back before personal computers, way back before cyberspace became the new frontier, there was Science Fiction and I was addicted to it. I read everything that I could get my hands on. I cut my baby teeth on Jules Verne and H.G. Wells but came to love all of Isaac Asimov’s works, read Heinlein until dizzy, lingered over Ray Bradbury’s prose-poetry, consumed A. E. Van Vogt, enjoyed Kurt Vonnegut’s quirky extrapolations, got into compare-and-contrast mode between Aldous Huxley and George Orwell’s dystopias, fantasized my way through Tolkein and C.S. Lewis and always made a beeline for anything written by Theodore Sturgeon, Philip K. Dick, Fritz Leiber, Harlan Ellison and Larry Niven. I was the first in line at the local news agent for the latest monthly editions of Amazing Adventures, Analog, and Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine.

At Disneyland, while other kids raced up Main Street to enter Fantasyland or Adventureland, I would always hit Tomorrowland first. Specifically, I headed straight for the “Rocket to the Moon” ride with its imaginative walk-through area showing an audio-animatronics mock-up of NASA’s Houston Control Center, where my father had been responsible for the real-life computer installation and set-up. Then it was into the ride’s circular rocket chamber amphitheater with in-the-middle movie screens on floor and ceiling “showing” your out-of-this-world flight to around the Moon and back. The seats were on a hydraulic system so that when you “blasted off”, you would “sink down” from the force of acceleration then lightly “lift up” to simulate a floating feeling of anti-gravity.

Michelle Obama: First Lady Of Fashion Victims

-By Ann “Babe” Huggett

While U.S. President, Barack Obama, is back from apologizing to our enemies for America’s existence, First Lady, Michelle Obama, toured London’s Westminster Abbey on Tuesday in an outfit so outlandishly silly that it appeared she wanted to go that one step further and hold up America as an object of ridicule. The Drudge Report has a cropped picture of her in a childish and unflattering beribboned and 3-D flowered tunic nipped in at the waist with a black checked belt, topped with two sweaters and wearing what can only be described as a retro-nod to 80’s tapered pants. Under this picture of a fashion disaster on the hoof are such glaring headline links as London Shock Fashion and Michelle and the Orange Snake.

They mercifully go to less harsh articles at the UK news sites Mail Online and Times Online respectively but if you want to read what the Brits call a real load of codswallop, check out the breathless fashion reporting touting “Mrs. O” as, “…First Lady of Fashion.”, and “Wide stripes sound like a neurotic fashion no-no, but again the First Lady knows exactly what she is doing.”

Well, if the angry glare Michelle Obama gave to France’s chic First Lady and former fashion model, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, at the 65th anniversary D-Day ceremonies they both attended in Normandy on June 6th is anything to go by, the Brits got the neurotic part right.

Alright, all you conservative fashionistas out there; I know you are reading this because the title caught your attention. So, please raise your manicured hands if you are sick of First Lady, Michelle Obama, being held up as some sort of Fashion Icon because she runs around London looking like a bad Mary Englebreit illustration. That same slavish, sycophantic liberal media that finally elevated President Barack Obama to a living Marxist god king status last week has also been falling all over themselves since before the 2008 election to convince us that Michelle Obama is the ne plus ultra of fashion sense and style.

NBC’s Medium: Not the TV of Old

-By Warner Todd Huston

I like the NBC series Medium starring Patricia Arquette. It’s about a psychic that helps the Phoenix, Arizona police catch criminals, usually murderers. Well, I say NBC because that is where the season finale ended this week and in a cliff hanger yet. Next fall it will pick back up on CBS because NBC dropped the show. Of course, it’s only natural that CBS would pick the show up for the next season because the CBS Television Studios division produces the show in the first place… um, even though it was first aired on NBC.

This is what I mean that this isn’t the old days of TV. In the old days CBS would not produce shows for NBC and any network that dumped a show that another network rescued — a rarity in and of itself — would not have allowed a cliff hanger for a season finale that would send viewers to the competition!

So, what of this odd show? Well, the whole series can be summed up by the word “consternation.” There’s consternation by the hero, Arquette’s Allison DuBois, who is always churned up about catching a criminal, the consternation of her boss trying to figure out how to actually bring in a criminal found through a psychic’s visions, the consternation of always suffering husband Joe who can’t figure out how to be a good father when he doesn’t know what crazy situation his wife will next get into, and the consternation of the three young DuBois daughters that are struggling both with growing up and growing up with certain annoying psychic powers of their own that they can neither control nor understand.

NYT Sees ‘Obama’s Face’ Everywhere, and is Loving it

-By Warner Todd Huston

In another nearly orgasmic tribute to The One, in its Arts section The New York Times published a May 30 story buoyantly jubilant over the fact that Obama’s face “rules the web.” The story is in glee over how the Obammessiah’s portrait fills the web and that some folks are even making a bit of cash off the deal.

To my mind, though, the amusing thing about the piece is that, if read closely, it appears that only schlocky Obama art can bring any sales as any serious artistic efforts are going unsold. I don’t know what that says about Obama art aficionados, but there you have it. Obama schlock rules.

This Chick Does Flicks: Terminator Salvation

-By Ann “Babe” Huggett

Directed by Joseph “McG” McGinty Nichol and starring gritty, post apocalyptic warriors, Christian Bale and Sam Worthington, Terminator Salvation, is a fine way to start off Summer 2009’s rollercoaster of action films. Now right from the start I thought that The Terminator was scary and amazing. Then along came the even more satisfying and hair raising Terminator 2: Judgment Day followed by the somewhat forgettable Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. However, Terminator Salvation opens up a whole new dystopic Terminator future world of man-munching special effects determined to obliterate human kind.

Terminator Salvation starts out calmly enough in 2003 when death row inmate, Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), signs over his pre-lethal-injection body to dying-of-cancer Dr. Serena Kogan (Helena Bonham Carter), who promises Wright that, “You will live again!” but doesn’t go into details. Fast forward 15 crazy years and it’s now the fried and crispy critter post-nuclear world of 2018 run by that Deux-et-machina wannabe, the self-aware Skynet, doing its level best to make sure that what few surviving humans are left go completely carbon neutral before their time.

Connecting Some Dots

-By Ann “Babe” Huggett

As the American Main Stream Media, public in general and conservative talk show hosts in particular lose interest in the on-going saga of bumptious talk show host, Michael Savage, being banned from Great Britain because of his political beliefs, a small news article and a newsletter alert popped up today that may seem disparate but added together form a troubling pattern. Blame it on the twelve-day shelf life of news stories when fickle public attention finally wanders away but Michael Savage’s story may soon segue from one man’s struggle to every man’s struggle to preserve their freedom of speech, thought and political beliefs within and without their own country.

Currently the only ones in America still making a major flap over Michael Savage’s unfair treatment by British Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith’s, arbitrarily placing him on the UK’s “Least Wanted” list of banned travelers is Michael himself. He, of course, is rightly obsessed with it and no can blame him. He thunders daily on his show, excoriating Smith, England and the Limbaughs, Hannitys and Levins of his radio genre that are doing nothing to support him.

Obama Says He’s Spock Then Misuses English Language

-By Warner Todd Huston

Remember how the left always asserted that George W. Bush was stupid? Remember how they were so thrilled to have the Obammessiah that spoke so well, a president that was perpetually the smartest man in the room? Well, after the many stammering TelePrompter free stump debacles during the campaign, many began to doubt this claim of his superior intelligence. Certainly by itself this is no big deal. But added with the whole here is another small dent in the perception of Obama’s overrated superiority.

Newsweek conducted a Q and A with the president at the end of which appears a few questions concerning his recent choices of entertainment. During the Q and A The One admitted he watched the reboot of Star Trek in the White House movie theater claiming that everyone was saying he was Spock. But two other things he said clanged badly: one arrogant and the other somewhat ignorant.

If you Don’t Like Your Uncle Sammy… Get OUT!

1915 was about the last time America had the right idea about its immigrants and this song from that era is emblematic of that: assimilate or get lost. Don’t Bite the Hand That’s Feeding You, words by Thomas Hoier and music by Jimmie Morgan, first became popular in 1915 and expresses just that theme. This version was recorded on Edison Records by Walter Van Brunt aka Walter Scanlon.

The basic theme of the tune tells ungrateful immigrants that if they’ve come to hate the United States, their adopted home, then they can get the heck out and go back to the armpit nation from which they came. We don’t need them here.

Unfortunately, too many Americans are afraid to tell ungrateful whiners that want to complain about the U.S.A. to take a hike these days. It’s all about being afraid of immigrants, now. Well, I say we should play this song and takes its message to heart.

So, here it is Don’t Bite the Hand That’s Feeding You.

The sad thing is one of our national parties has built itself on refashioning its members as American ingrates. If this theme were to be applied every Democrat in the country would have to leave!

Girls Had Enough of Being Called ‘Hos’ In Rap Music, Organize High School Ban

-By Warner Todd Huston

Three energetic young girls from Arcadia High School have been successful in having 20 offensive Rap songs banned from their high school prom dance. The trio got 1,000 other students to sign a petition excoriating Rap tunes that employ against women derogatory terms such as “bitches” and “Hos.”

With their campaign the girls of the Arcadia High Women’s Health and Issues Club convinced school administrators to drop the songs from the prom music playlist.

Club members were not advocating for replacement songs nor for any particular genera of music, just to eliminate songs that featured abusive language toward women, presented women as objects, or treated women as “animals.”

Naturally, these girls are catching all manner of guff from other students. This junk Rap music is very popular with kids despite the misogynistic lyrics, the low level of intelligence celebrated in them, the bad language, and the low-class, thug lifestyles often pervading them.

The America Hating Kids Enviro Video Coming Soon to Your School

-By Warner Todd Huston

A new propaganda video created by an extreme environmental activist is making its way into America’s classrooms and The New York Times loves the whole idea. Enviro obsessive Annie Leonard, Greenpeace member and activist, has created a 20 minute video filled with anti-capitalist, anti-American propaganda to encourage kids to eschew “stuff,” calling the presentation “The Story of Stuff.”

Leonard’s propaganda piece is so anti-American she even begins her video by saying that her “friends” say she should describe the United States by using the symbol of a military tank because “it’s true in many countries and increasingly in our own.” And why is a tank “increasingly” the symbol of the USA? Because “more than 50% of our federal tax money is going for our military.” Naturally, this misleading propaganda doesn’t mention that a large portion of that federal military spending ends up going to the weekly pay and health care of our soldiers, something apparently Ms. Leonard is against. She goes on to say that a government’s job is to “take care of us, that’s their job.” Here she is trying to promote dependency and proves that she has no clue what a government is really for — especially in the U.S. system.

ABC Radio News Break: Sykes Slams Oba… Oh, I Mean Cheney

-By Warner Todd Huston

This year comedian Wanda Sykes was given the spotlight for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. This made everyone wonder if she’d throw a barb or two Obama’s way as is customary. All past hosts have spared no opportunity to skewer the current commander in chief and his administration. That is what the thing is for, after all. But with the kid gloves that the Old Media and Hollywood have handled Obama with thus far, the question reamained: would Sykes slap Obama?

Well, even if comedian Sykes did give a lighthearted whack or two to The One, we wouldn’t know about it by listening to the ABC Radio news break at the top of the 10PM hour (central). During the radio news break a report was aired on the dinner that featured one of Sykes’ jokes.

Was it about Barack? Michelle? Even an Obama staffer? Nope. ABC couldn’t find its way clear to air any of those jokes. No, what ABC aired was Sykes’ joke about… Dick Cheney. Isn’t he out of office?

Noblesse Oblige? The One Wants His OWN Star Trek Showing

-By Warner Todd Huston

I Know Spock, Mr. Obama. You are no Spock.

I suppose if I was the ruler of the free world, I’d want it too. I mean, if I controlled all I survey, if the nation bowed before me, if the illiterati gave an obedient chuckle at my every quip, yet paused thoughtfully at my pretensions at seriousness, if the world placed me on my rightful pedestal, I’d imagine that the producers of the hottest new movie premiering this month would be similarly overawed that I’d like to see their little film.

Certainly, were I the Übermensch-in-chief, I’d also imagine that these same film producers couldn’t possibly expect me to go to a public theater and be forced to sit with the “people” to see this flick, of course. I’d know that the film’s creators and stars would have the good sense not to expect me to have to sit among the sweaty, loud, unschooled masses, that great unwashed. These filmmakers are smart folks, after all I would know.

So, were I the king of the world, I too would give Paramount Pictures a call and demand that they set up a free, personal screening in my super cool movie house built especially for the president.

Palin Derangement Syndrome Engulfs Baltimore Sun’s TV Guy

-By Warner Todd Huston

Baltimore Sun TV critic David Zurawik should check into a clinic somewhere to have his delicate mental balance checked. Maybe they might have some nice medication he can take to temper his Palin Derangement Syndrome? His is so bad he can’t even write about a little reality TV show without indulging unnecessary vitriol and hate.

It’s interesting that critic Zurawik gets so filled with hate in such a short space. In fact, the tiny four paragraph “review” spends more time name calling and attacking Governor Palin than it does in discussing the TV show on which she is about to appear; TLC’s American Chopper.

Certainly professor Zurawik’s contribution to society is above reproach, of course. Long known to be the bastion of American intellectualism and culture, TV has always been considered one of our most important institutions. So, Zurawik’s work as a critic is sure to have the sort of cultural staying power as that of the great philosophers, I am sure. And his review of Palin’s appearance on American Chopper is sure to remain a standout example of the sort of tour de force work he’s long been known for.

I was on CNN.com Today

-By Warner Todd Huston

Well, I had an interesting afternoon. Got a call from CNN that they needed a second righty blogger for their 12:30 Blogger’s Call segment on their livestream CNN.com show. (I know, enemy territory, right? Ha, ha)

So, they called me at about 10:45 and I had a little time to get my video and audio all set up before I went live with them. It was a segment with four bloggers (two rightys, two leftys) and we talked with anchors Reggie and Mam about Obama’s first 100 days.

We were all asked to grade Obama. Of course, I gave him a “D.” My chief complaint was how badly he’s bungled foreign policy by giving Chavez such a great propaganda moment at our expense and his cockup with the Brits. I also said his socialist policies are going to be bad for the long run. Etc., etc.

I don’t think there is video of it as it was all live, but I had a good time and look forward to being called back sometime in the future.

Pianist Cancels All U.S. Concerts Over Foreign Policy

-By Warner Todd Huston

I respect Polish concert pianist Krystian Zimmerman’s moxie. Oh, he hasn’t a clue what he is talking about, but he has the courage of his convictions at least, which is more than I can say for all those wild-eyed, half-informed, hypocrites in the American entertainment industry.

You see, a few days ago, pianist Zimmerman announced in the middle of a concert that he would no longer be playing concerts in the U.S. because he is against U.S. foreign policy. If you truly want to know this loon’s political complaints, there is a long, pointless and boring story about it in the L.A. Times on April 28.

Me, I couldn’t care less about this half-wit’s gripes. But I do applaud him for having the backbone to do something about it. He will forgo his money, cancel his concerts and leave this country. I say good for him. It’s about time one of these pampered “stars” in the entertainment industry finally has the stones to live up to the blather.

Chavez’ Penn, Or How Santa Monica High Should Hang Its Penn in Shame

-By Warner Todd Huston

Someone needs to sue Santa Monica High School for education malpractice on behalf of the ill-educated Sean Penn. I mean, the man is nearly illiterate and he certainly has no grasp on history, philosophy, or statecraft. But his wacko left-wing inanities aside, it is his illiteracy that seems the most lamentable. Oh, it isn’t Rosie O’Donnell illiterate, hers is a special class of insensibility all by itself, but Penn’s brand is proof of the lowest quality of education. I mean the man can barely put two words together sensibly much less exhibit a grasp of grammar and syntax. It really is a crime how badly he’s been educated.

Take for instance his latest Huffington Post blathering where he seems to be saying that all we need to win the day in international relations is to give a “smile.” Aside from being childishly simplistic in concept, it has some of the worst word usage and syntax I’ve seen for a long time in what is supposed to be a leader of opinion (again, Rosie aside).

Now, I don’t claim to be the king of grammar, myself. But, if I had millions of dollars as he does I’d at least be smart enough to hire an editor so that I don’t end up looking like a complete moron. Unfortunately, I am one of the po’folk, so I have to muddle through as best as I can.

His wind up is amusing for its utter lack of introspection.

Guest: Thousands Protest Lifetime TV’s New Father-Bashing Reality Show ‘Deadbeat Dads’

-By Glenn Sacks

Thousands of protesters have called and written Lifetime Television this week to protest Lifetime’s new father-bashing reality show Deadbeat Dads. Last year, similar protests drove the show—originally called Bad Dads–off of Fox.

According to Reuters, in Deadbeat Dads Jim Durham, director of the National Child Support Center, “functions as a sort of ‘Dog the Bounty Hunter’ for tracking deadbeats.” Durham targets dads by “making their lives miserable — foreclosing on their house, repossessing their car. He will squeeze them… It’s ambush reality TV.”

The program’s depiction of divorced dads is a horrendous distortion. Research clearly shows that most divorced dads pay their child support and strive to remain a part of their children’s lives, often under very difficult circumstances. The Federal Office of Child Support Enforcement’s own data shows that two-thirds of “deadbeat dads” earn poverty level wages—only 4% earn even $40,000 a year.

Jon Stewart Cows Another Lefty – Did Matthews Change Book Title Over Stewart Mockery?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Back in 2007, lefty comedian Jon Stewart mercilessly mocked lefty talk show host Chris Matthews over the title of his book when Matthews appeared to flog the tome on Stewart’s The Daily Show. The ribbing was so unexpected and so mean spirited that Matthews later said it was a “book interview from hell.”

Now Matthews is releasing the book in paperback but amazingly there is a tiny difference between this version of the book and the original. The pulper was originally titled, “Life’s a Campaign: What Politics Has Taught Me About Friendship, Rivalry, Reputation, and Success.” But now, all of a sudden the paperback version of this thing is heading to stores as, “The Hardball Handbook: How to Win at Life.”

So, what gives? Is Matthews afraid of Stewart’s renewed attack on his book? Did Matthews change the book’s title for fear of a comedian?
