Happy Veterans Day and thanks again for your support of Cooking with the Troops

300x250

The idea for Cooking With the Troops grew out of a joint event between Bob Miller and C. Blake Powers. Bob Miller began doing barbecues at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 2005, and Blake Powers began doing food events as a result of his first embed in Iraq in 2007, working through the charity Soldiers’ Angels. Bob suggested doing a joint event at Malogne House at Walter Reed, with Bob and his volunteers doing a barbecue and to be followed by a dessert bar afterwards.

Thank You Veterans

-By Warner Todd Huston

America is a singularly different nation where it concerns our military veterans. We love them. We even have a national holiday to honor them. This is not so in most of the rest of the world. Elsewhere military veterans are not so loved as they are here.

Is that because the United States is the Sparta of the world, loving war more than anything else? Hardly. In fact its because our soldiers bring peace wherever they go, not perpetual war.

In other countries, soldiers are usually the dregs of society, living off the people while at the same time lording over them with machine guns and violence.

NYPD Police Union: Another Example of Why Public Employee Unions Need to be Outlawed

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last week 16 dirty New York cops went on trial for all sorts of criminal behavior. From dealing drugs, to assault and grand larceny, and “unrelated corruption,” these cops are proving to be some very crooked characters. But fellow officers don’t care about that. They have ginned themselves up to act like the punks and scumbags they are supposed to be putting behind bars all due to their police union and its agitation over the trials.

Even The New York Times seemed shocked by the venomous treatment these union thugs cops were delivering to the District Attorneys handling the case. Certainly these crooked cops are innocent until the prosecution proves its case, but these union toughs don’t care to let the law take its course. They want to storm the gates like the barbarians they are.

These so-called police officers even began to accost the media as the defendants left the courtroom. Says the Times, “The assembled police officers blocked cameras from filming their colleagues, in one instance grabbing lenses and shoving television camera operators backward.”

A 2012 World View: What is the End Game?

-By Nancy Salvato

Having a world view and understanding how that perception influences our choices is important to knowing ourselves, being able to take or defend a position, and set goals and work to meet them. Sharing perspective helps us to understand and communicate with those who do not share the same belief systems but allows us to get along if we can find some commonalities or on what we can agree to disagree. When people holding a world view do not have the awareness to understand why they hold their position or are unable to comprehend that different experiences allow for a different outlook, this is when conflict can occur. This holds relevance for the 2012 election cycle.

Conflict is not confined between strangers. It can arise within family units; it can happen in the workplace, on the playing field, or even at a party. On such a smaller scale, it might be considered a personality conflict. A person can even be conflicted inside one’s own head. It is how potential conflict is addressed that makes all the difference in the world.

Within our own country, the Founders and Framers understood that there has to be a balance between individual rights and the rights of the community. They were under no illusions that in a country this large that everyone could hold the same beliefs and goals. They wanted to create a place where to the largest extent possible, people could be free without imposing on others. You could say their end goal was freedom. In creating the U.S. Constitution, they created a document that would maximize freedom and minimize conflict. For example, rather than elevate one religion over others by sponsoring it by the state, they included the First Amendment, which reads:

An Example of Why Radio Host Michael Medved is No Conservative

-By Warner Todd Huston

Michael Medved is touted as a “conservative” radio host from the Salem Radio Network. But just how conservative is he? One has to wonder with his constant dismissive attacks against any and every conservative politician. But this week he revealed another reason why he is less conservative than he pretends.

Medved started his political life working for the Kennedy’s in the 60s, so like many young people he started out as a liberal. But from his radio show yesterday it seems pretty plain that he never really turned the corner from a big government liberal to a true conservative. He obviously still has a ton of far left beliefs in the wondermentatudenousness that is government.

The subject of Obama’s tax on the Christian Christmas icon, the Christmas tree came up on his Tuesday radio program. Obama floated the idea that a 15 cents per tree federal tax should be put on Christmas trees this year to fund another bloated boondoggle government agency.

Video: Walsh Gets a Bit Testy With Constituent

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Internet tubuals have been heating up with a video showing 8th District Republican Congressman Joe Walsh getting — shall we say — a bit testy with a constituent at a recent townhall.

The townhall was held in North Suburban Gurnee at Uno Bar and Grill and Walsh was being grilled about a lack of banking regulations by at least one voter.

Walsh was having none of it, as you saw. He’s exactly right about his point, too. It was Congress that was the problem, not any lack of banking regulations. I stand with Joe on the idea of getting government out of the economy not, as the voters on the video was trying to urge, get government more involved in the economy.

However, I feel Joe’s comportment was over the top and inappropriate. I support his passion on that issue, but he was simply too harsh in reply.

Contact Super Committee: REAL Debt Reduction MUST Include Entitlement Reform

-By Warner Todd Huston

American Action Network has created a Facebook application to help you contact the liberal members of the Super Committee to urge them to include entitlement reform in the budget negotiations now going on in Washington.

American Action Network’s effort to put pressure on super committee liberals to include entitlement reform in the debt deal can be seen at their new Contact the Super Committee Facebook Page.

This allows users to tweet, Facebook and email the super committee liberals with the messaging, “Real debt reduction must include entitlement reform! Do not play politics with our children’s future.”

It Begs the Question: Who Lost?

-By Frank Hyland

In the coming days, you will hear much about candidates for public office who won their elections. Those races are not trivial, not unimportant. They are less important, though, than the big losers in the contests. The big losers are union members. That may be difficult to grasp given the TV coverage of AFL-CIO head Richard Trumka in Ohio grinning at the results like Buddha himself. When you consider it in greater detail, however, it becomes considerably clearer.

Taking this one step at a time, the Ohio ballot initiative called for overturning a state law aimed at reducing an eight-billion-dollar budget deficit. The law did away with the unions’ authority to collect dues from members even if the members did not want to contribute that money. Unlike other locales, members of police forces and firefighters were included in the law’s provisions. In addition, all public employees were slated to contribute 10% of their income to their pensions and 15% to the cost of their health care plans. The morning after the election, many union members are grinning as broadly as Richard Trumka. The grins will not last long, however, and will be replaced with frowns and grimaces as reality sinks in, a reality concealed from them by union leaders. Why? The defeat of this measure means that other, different steps will need to be taken to reduce the deficit. What steps? Governor Kasich has stated that taxes will not be raised in order to reduce Ohio’s deficit and that there simply is no money to pay for all the budget needs. Since the amount of money available will be reduced, the only solution left will be layoffs of public employees. Union rules already prescribe how their members will be chosen to be laid off – it’s called seniority. So those of you union members in Ohio who are 40 years of age and under, it is time to begin looking for another job and/or filling out the paperwork for unemployment benefits. Local towns, cities, and counties in Ohio will not be able to sustain the cost of their present workforces. The timing of this impending disaster for you younger union members could not be worse, coming as it is in the run-up to the holiday season.

Obama intended to initiate this tax of fifteen cents per live tree so that he could take that money and fund an advertising project for, uh, selling live Christmas trees. Yes, it’s that idiotic…

A Proposal on Personhood

-By Warner Todd Huston

Yesterday a measure failed in the Mississippi elections. The measure would have declared that life begins at conception and therefore what liberals like to call an “unviable tissue mass” deserves to have the rights of a human being.

I agree to a small degree that if the measure would have passed that a whole lot of maybe unintended consequences would have emerged. But that is, I feel, a discussion worth having. Why shouldn’t we argue from the position that human life is precious?

But many leftists said it is “madness” to say that life begins at conception because it would impinge on liberal’s love affair with infanticide. Certainly, some might say “the madness” is all the babies getting killed that liberals conveniently don’t accept as “human,” but, well, you know.

So, what is a human, anyway?

Essentially left-wingers have no logical argument about what is and isn’t a “person.” They argue to kill babies merely out of convenience. They just don’t want the bother of having a baby. About time they admitted it.

Ripping Off California at the Speed of High Speed Rail

-By Warner Todd Huston

One of President Obama’s favorite go-to items to “stimulate” the economy is building new rail lines, especially high-speed rail. Many states have been smart enough to cancel the high-speed rail projects, but oh, not California. California’s project rolls inexorably onward. Still, California does help show the rest of the country why high-speed rail is a boondoggle that should be avoided.

The high-speed rail line that is being built between San Diego and San Francisco was initially sold to California voters as a $40 billion project with Prop 1A back in 2008. That’s a lot of cash, certainly, but its proponents said if it brings jobs to build it and improves the jobs situation in both cities after it’s built, it would be a good investment.

Prop 1A passed with just under 53% of the vote and was supposed to begin ferrying passengers by the year 2020. But now it has been found that the completion date and the $40 billion estimate both are, well, a bit off.

The Tax Plan that’s Better than Cain’s, Perry’s or Gingrich’s

-By Selwyn Duke

Bold tax reform is front and center this campaign season. First Herman Cain made waves and poll headway with his 9-9-9 tax plan, which involves national 9-percent taxes on personal and corporate income and a 9-percent national sales tax. Now Rick Perry has followed suit with a 20-percent flat-tax plan, and Newt Gingrich has gone 5 better, with a 15-percent flat proposal. And these ideas certainly haven’t fallen flat: tax reform is immensely popular among the Republican base.

Yet there has been criticism, too – at least of Cain’s plan, the only one around long enough to be criticized. Many are concerned about giving the feds another vehicle – a sales tax – through which to fleece us. Sure, 9-9-9 sounds good, but what is to stop it from becoming 10-10-10, then 11-11-11 and ending up as 30-30-30? Yet, national sales tax or not, this threat looms with any plan; what is to stop Perry’s 20 percent or Gingrich’s 15 from becoming 40? Remember, the one-percent income tax sounded good, too, in 1913, but consider what it has morphed into.

So, yes, this threat exists with any plan.

That is, except one.

Panama President’s Commitment to Drug Mafia Very Clear

(A friend of mine asked me to post this for her, and so…)
-By Mauro Zúñiga Araúz

When a President is placed in that position by drug trafficking, an inescapable commitment is acquired by the two parties. That is what is currently happening with the President of Panama, Ricardo Martinelli Berrocal. It is a well-known secret, both nationally and internationally, that Mr. Martinelli Berrocal is linked to the drug mafia, be it through money laundering and through drug trafficking. His million dollar campaign was funded largely by drug trafficking. His cousin, Ramon Martinelli Corro, Treasurer of the ruling party, as well as one of his mistresses, Ninoska Escalante, are imprisoned in Mexico for drug trafficking. Colombian citizen David Murcia Guzman, arrested in the USA for money laundering, was one of his campaign contributors.

The President’s commitment to the drug mafia was very clear. Once sworn in power with full control of the Legislature and the Judiciary, the Comptroller’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office, he intended to approve in the National Assembly, a law on Public Private Partnership (PPP), which would entitle him exclusively to give the international underworld all services provided by the State, such as concessions to exploit natural resources and the ability to perform the necessary expropriations. Indeed, Martinelli Berrocal sent Bill 349 (PPP) to the National Assembly. Articles 3 and 4 of the Bill define what can happen to the private sector: all of it, except financial institutions. They can privatize: the Panama Canal, the Social Security Agency, Public Hospitals, Education, the water utility, rivers, beaches, the National Police, the mines, the Primary Health Care, Tourism, the Institute of Culture, Protected Areas, the National Land Authority, roads, the borders, the National Lottery, the Public Registry; in short, all services provided by the State. Articles 6 and 7 stipulate what the governing body is: the President and the officials he can appoint and fire. The decisions of this body are absolute, final and not subject to any control whatsoever. We are talking about the most harmful bill that has ever been submitted to the National Assembly in 108 years of our country’s life as a republic.

Intolerable Acts

Do you wonder why France recently voted to let the Arab occupiers (“Palestinians”) become “members” of UNESCO, as if they are a nation? Did you wonder why President Obama opposes the construction of Jewish homes in the Jewish capital city?

The truth is out, and it’s ugly. At a meeting in Europe Obama and Sarkozy were caught with open mics complaining bitterly about the Prime Minister of Israel. Sarkozy was more blunt, saying that he can’t stand the Jewish leader while Obama more or less followed his lead, adding that “you don;t have to deal with him every day.”

So much for Obama’s efforts to win over Jewish voters in America who seem him as anti-Israel…

From most appearances, the Senate will this week vote on Senate Joint Resolution (S.J.Res) 6 – the Congressional Review Act Resolution of Disapproval of the Obama Administration Federal Communications Commission (FCC)’s illegal Internet Net Neutrality power grab.

Only 51 votes are required for passage – which means only 4 Democrats are needed. There are 23 Democrat Senate seats up for reelection next year. A few of these folks aren’t running. The rest are – many in center or center-right states. Additionally, there are a few other Senators that should also be subject to Constitutional reason, and thusly contacted.

Defeat of OH Issue 2 Means $1,468 More Per Taxpayer By 2015

-By Warner Todd Huston

Matt Mayer of the Buckeye Institute has done the math on what a defeat of Issue 2 will cost Ohio’s taxpayers. Turns out it will cost taxpayers $1,468 more a year by 2015.

Mayer made a simple calculation by taking the $8 billion tax hike that a defeat of Issue 2 will usher in by 2015 and dividing that by the 5,448, 500 state tax returns filed in Ohio. He also took the initial $1.4 billion tax hike that will result if the unions win on Tuesday and found that each taxpayer will be stuck with an immediate $257 more in taxes next year.

The annual savings we calculated from SB5 once all contracts are negotiated would be nearly $1.4 billion per year (for details, see www.buckeyeinstitute.org/getthefacts).

In 2007, Ohio had 5,448,500 [tax] returns filed, so that would equate to a “tax” of $257 per return… That is [merely] the savings from SB5 enactment.

An additional wrinkle is that Big Labor/Democrats have essentially gone all in on higher taxes; meaning, if SB5 is repealed, that removes one option to reducing local government costs, which leaves two options–program/staff cuts and/or raising taxes… For example, Ohio’s 613 school districts currently project a collective deficit by 2015 of [approximately $8 billion]…

[Thus, without] SB5, taxes will have to go up … [at least] $8 billion just for [Ohio’s] 613 school districts by 2015, which is $1,468 per return.

So, Ohio, you have a choice. Vote Issue 2 down and stick yourself with needlessly higher taxes and give unions the ability to stick it to you further, or give your legislature — not union bosses — the power to control your state’s budget like they should.

Abe Lincoln and His Convicted Felon Pal, Bill Cellini?

-By Warner Todd Huston

This is the kind of nonsense that we get with political influence peddling and corruption. A painting that now hangs in the new Lincoln library and museum in our state capitol has a ridiculous tie to long-time Springfield corruption king Bill Cellini, who was just last week convicted on charges of extortion and bribery.

Standing behind Lincoln whispering in his ear is a person that looks suspiciously like the corrupt Cellini.

According to The Southern, Bill isn’t the only Cellini memorialized in paint at the museum. His wife, Julie, is also in a scene depiction Civil War era Washington D.C. Mrs. Cellini is a key benefactor of the museum.

Unions Continue to Swindle the Public

-By Larry Sand

Unions are still treacherous, but with a generous helping of legislative malfeasance, their tactics are more subtle.

“On the Waterfront” portrayed union power at its rawest. In the 1950s, the unions typically got their way with nothing less than brute force. But today the tactics are different. In “Pretty Boy Floyd,” Woody Guthrie sang, “Some will rob you with a six-gun, and some with a fountain pen.” The unions are well entrenched in the “fountain pen” camp and recently, Illinois has been in their crosshairs.

In September, the Chicago Tribune broke a story about Dennis Gannon, a former sanitation worker who became a president of the Chicago Federation of Labor. He went back to work for the city for one day, then took a leave of absence and was legally allowed to collect a $158,000 pension, about five times the average sanitation worker.

One Chance That a President Mitt Romney Wouldn’t Be So Bad

-By Warner Todd Huston

I cannot support Mitt Romney in this coming GOP primary. The one reason why can be summed up simply as this: he flip flops. Romney has more flip flops than a California beachfront. Mitt has been proven a man without anchor adrift in a sea of issues that push him and pull him with the tides. Even worse, maybe, is that he jumps from one ship to the other on those political tides with the sole purpose of scoring a political win. So, how could I say that such a rudderless sailor could be an OK president?

Well, there is one way that a shiftless Mitt Romney might be good for both the country and the conservative cause but it certainly isn’t because he cares at all about conservative issues. It isn’t that he’ll champion them himself, either. But think about this. What does an unmoored boat do but drift with the tide? This is where, if played correctly, Romney could actually work for conservatives.

In fact, a President Romney could be good for Congress no matter which side of the political divide is in control. And control is the word, too.

For far too long Congress has been slowly giving away its Constitutional powers to legislate. Through sloth and selfish re-election needs Congressmen have been allowing the courts to take an unconstitutional role in determining our legislation as well as standing aside as one president after another grabs power unto the executive branch that he wasn’t supposed to have — the latter of which both left and right have complained about for decades.

Death By Regulations: Has Obama Lost Senator Blanche Lincoln?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last year for the 2010 midterms Arkansas Senator Blanche Lincoln was in trouble with her reelection. Up until 2010 most felt her seat was a safe one but Democrat challengers pushed the sitting Senator to a runoff that she barely won. 55% of her constituents opposed her.

Lincoln welcomed the support of President Obama who cut an early ad for the Senator portraying her as a “populist crusader.” Still, Lincoln lost her her reelection bid to Republican John Boozman.

Obama may have come to Lincoln’s aide in 2010, but it doesn’t look like Blanche is returning the favor in 2012. Lincoln is leading a charge against the Obama administration’s regulatory orgy by taking the chairmanship of a new group called Small Businesses for Sensible Regulation.

Will Newt Gingrich Win the Republican Nomination?

-By Selwyn Duke

If slow and steady really does win the race, Newt Gingrich could well end up being the Republican nominee for president.

Thus far, this campaign season has been defined by flash-in-the-pan fortunes. Michele Bachmann was first out of the blocks and won the Iowa straw poll, but this seemed much like a house of straw when Texas governor Rick Perry entered the fray and became her Big Bad Wolf. But then he blew his own house down with a series of disastrous debate performances, allowing the Cain Train to pull into the station. This brings us to where we are now, with Herman Cain holding on to a slim lead over Mitt Romney – with a lot of voters still undecided. And should the bold businessman’s stock crash, where will a plurality of his support go?

The answer may surprise you. If polling is any indication, it’s not Tea Party caucus chairman Michele Bachmann or staunch states-rights standard bearer Rick Perry.

It’s Newt Gingrich.

An avowed communist, like so many of these people are, he feels that America is the chief evil of the world and needs to be destroyed.

This man wants America destroyed. He is not an outlier at these Occupy events. He is quite typical. And always remember, the U.S. Democrat Party is supporting these people. People that hate America are an important constituency as far as Democrats are concerned.

Eight Reasons Why Today’s World Despises and Resists Christianity

-By Rev Michael Bresciani

All references to Christianity here are referring only to Bible based or scripturally centered faith unless otherwise stated. In politics the term RINO has emerged of late, meaning Republican in name only. Borrowing from that acronym the religious counterpart of a RINO would be CINO. (Christian in name only) We are in the throes of the biggest apostasy (Falling away) of the Christian faith in the last twenty centuries and many churches and organizations that spearhead this apostasy are certainly, CINO.

1. The indisputable number one reason real Christianity is despised is because it declares that man’s greatest problem is sin. We have for centuries seen the problems of man as a lack of knowledge, economics, race problems, politics and dozens more. The Bible recognizes none of these things as the root problem of man. Rather the scriptures declares that the fallen condition of man drives us all to a propensity to sin that ultimately causes the problems of all mankind. Wars, economic disparities, race problems and all else is a result of man’s willingness to sin and live out lives of sin without recognizing that they are sinners.

The Bible has many things to say about sin but the central focus is that Jesus Christ came into the world mainly to deal with the problem of sin once and for all. His death on the cross was no accident or untimely thwarting of his goals and ministry. It was the primary reason he came and the ultimate goal of his life. (Jn 18: 37)

When is ‘Art’ Just a Stain on a Bowl?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Apparently “art” is just a stain on a bowl when a janitor thinks that a piece of junk that the intelligentsia call “mah-dren arht” needs to be cleaned up a bit. That’s what happened to a piece by “artist” Martin Kippenberger at a museum in Dortmund, England.

A janitor from Germany came across the display built of stained slats of wood featuring a plastic bowl at the bottom painted to look as if it had been stained by water. Apparently the cleaner took the faux stain for a real water stain and decided he’d better clean that thing up so the bowl looked nice and shiny.

Extra points for the cleaner so keen about his job that what looked like a long-time stain was cleaned up. I call that initiative.

New York Billboard Campaign: ‘Congress Must Cut $1.5 Trillion’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Bankrupting America has started a new billboard campaign in both New York City and Washington DC urging the so-called “Super Committee” to cut $1.5 trillion from the federal budget this November.

As the supercommittee continues to meet behind closed doors, it’s important they remember what is at stake. Millions of Americans sit out of work, cost of living is rising, and uncertainty continues to hamstring a recovery. They must keep in mind that they’re not working in a vacuum. The policies enacted within the halls of Congress send ripples throughout the country and the world.

So we decided to place some high-profile reminders for the the members of the supercommittee – that Americans are still watching. We placed billboards in Times Square in New York City and in Washington D.C. telling the supercommittee we remember your promises of fiscal responsibility and commitment to place the federal government’s spending back on a sustainable path.

Keep your promise. Check out the billboards below.

The Second Man: Libs Reveal Their Anti-Truth Bias

-By Daniel Clark

You can tell a liberal is trapped when he pulls out the trusty fill-in-the-blank evasion that White House press secretary Jay Carney used when discussing the “Occupy Wall Street” demonstrations: “One man’s mob is another man’s democracy.”

This time-tested rhetorical tactic has often been used by liberals to shield their positions from examination, by denying the very existence of an objective reality. “One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom-fighter,” they’ll say. “One man’s pornography is another man’s poetry.” Simply by asserting that there are differing opinions, they declare the issue to be effectively nullified.

The fundamental flaw in these arguments is that the theoretical Second Man in each example is demonstrably wrong. Considering his track record, one would have to conclude that he’s either a liar, or else an ignoramus unable to discern fact from fiction, or right from wrong. An Islamic terrorist who wants to force the rest of the world to submit to his beliefs is not a freedom fighter. Larry Flynt is not just a modern-day Robert Frost in a puddle of drool. The fact that somebody might take contrary positions on matters like these does not elevate those contentions to equal footing with the truth.

DOJ Bosses Must Have Approved Fast And Furious Wiretapping

Recently we’ve been introduced to what appears to be the Obama administration’s sacrificial lamb for Operation Fast and Furious; Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer.

One of the interesting questions that arises over how high into the Dept. of Justice knowledge of F&F went concerns the approval of the wiretaps used during some of the F&F operations. For his part, Breuer says that anyone higher than he that had to approve these wiretaps could not have known exactly what F&F was all about because they had no knowledge of the total operation and so could not have put two and two together…
