Pelosi Beats Her Dogs Down

-By Warner Todd Huston

No, blue doggie, bad, bad dog. No deal for you. Speaker Pelosi has now told her Congressional Blue Dogs it’s no deal. The Hill reports that Pelosi is “backing away” from a deal that the conservative Democrat group had thought the Speaker had agreed to.

Apparently, Pelosi only agreed to the Blue Dog’s policy ideas on H.R. 3200 so she could get the bill out of committee and out to the floor for consideration because now she is guiding the bill back toward the extreme left as the bill proceeds.

Pelosi had agreed to downplay the public option in the bill but now that its out of committee she is again pushing that policy back into it despite what Blue Dogs wanted. One aide said that for Pelosi it’s “full speed ahead.”

Pelosi is also pushing for a get-the-rich provision.

Pelosi has also told her fellow leaders she still wants an income surtax on the wealthy, rather than a tax on “Cadillac” health plans, as a means to help pay the $1 trillion cost of the bill. The rest is to be made up with savings in Medicare by eliminating wasteful spending.

If Republicans eying Blue Dog seats are smart they will use this as a hammer to beat down every center left Democrat in the country.

Obamacare Mandates Will Cost Business $49 Billion a Year

-By Warner Todd Huston

It has been estimated that employer mandates forced on businesses by H.R. 3200 and the other legislation barreling through Congress will cost America’s businesses $49 billion a year if passed.

According to the Heritage Foundation the mandates in the bills now under consideration will force employers to buy healthcare insurance for their employees or pay a per head tax to the federal government. This could affect between 95 million to 105 million workers and about 1 million small businesses.

What will this mean to America’s business community?

The mandates will cost businesses at least $49 billion per year and put 5.2 million low-wage workers at risk of unemploy_ment or reduced working hours. The prospect of fewer job opportunities in the future will put another 10.2 million workers at risk of slower wage growth and cuts in other benefits. Up to 382,000 low-wage unskilled workers are likely to lose their jobs.

Worse, these higher costs of doing business will be passed onto customers in higher prices and/or restricted availability of products. It cannot be ignored that higher prices will hurt low-income households the hardest.

This all amounts to a defacto tax increase for all Americans regardless of income level.

Obamacare’s Abortion Fight Heats Up

-By Warner Todd Huston

Steven Ertelt raised the alarm today that Congressional Democrats are looking for ways to sneak federally funded abortion into Obama’s massive take over of one sixth of the nation’s economy by nationalizing our healthcare system.

Senator Chuck Grassley (R, Iowa) is warning of the Democrat’s abortion funding plans, as well. “On abortion, despite commitments made by the President and Secretary Sebelius,” Grassely warned, “this bill does not follow the longstanding principle that federal funds should not be provided for elective abortions.”

But pro-life forces are not sitting idly by.

A Sneak Peek Inside Obama’s Presidential Diary

-By Ann “Babe” Huggett

Just a typical Wednesday, 2009:

6:30 am: Rise and Shine! Push-ups, sit-ups and cinch Michelle into her latest thick leather belt. Man! That woman looks more and more like a plow horse every day! I’ve got to talk her out of those harnesses!

7:00 am: See the girls before they go off to that private Sidwell Friends School of theirs. Those girls deserve the best!

7:15 am: Sneak a cigarette and sign papers killing vouchers for school choice. Who do those parents think they are by keeping their children out of the public school indoctrination into MY Personality Cult like that?

Kooks Now Run The Asylum, Part 2

-By Frederick Meekins

With the Obama agenda, the New Age mindset shares the perspective that you are not so much a distinct individual worthy as such but rather a mere component emanating outward into larger and larger groups. For example, at the lowest level you are part of the COMMUNITY.

Note that the family has been skipped over entirely as the prerogatives of the reactionary fecund union between a monogamous man and woman must be overridden by the preferences of the bureaucracy administering the larger group. At the highest level, all identity is subsumed into an absolutist holism. Obama prophesizes, “…the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself.”

Chesterton, or someone nearly as wise, once remarked that one shouldn’t take down a fence unless you know why it was put up. Ladies and gentlemen (especially ladies), if we are to live as one common humanity, do you really want a Pakistani tribesman with Taliban sympathies to have a say over how you live your life in terms of whether or not you can go outside without a bag over you head, be permitted to drive a car, or even have windows in your home not painted over so that you can look outside.

A Doctor’s Deep Concerns About Obamacare

-By Warner Todd Huston

Woodrow Wilcox, a fellow that operates a Medicare advice and assistance website, was contacted not long ago by a local Indiana doctor that read the entire bill of H.R. 3200. Once he was done he had some deep and troubling concerns about Obamacare. The doctor, Stephen E. Fraser, M.D., then sat down and wrote Senator Evan Bayh about these concerns.

Here is that letter:

Dear Senator Bayh,

As a practicing physician, I have major concerns with the health care bill (HR 3200) before Congress. I spent the last week reading this bill, which at over 1000 pages is quite difficult to get through. Have you read it? I’m shocked by the brazenness of the government’s intrusion into the patient-physician relationship. I’m especially concerned about the creation of a central committee to decide medical coverage decisions.

Obama’s Gov’t ‘Non-Profit’ Insurance ‘Competition’ Idea is Uninformed

-By Warner Todd Huston

In his desire to slander capitalism and impugn the integrity of all insurance companies in order to play up his “public option” idea, President Obama’s main claim has been that those evil insurance companies need “competition” from a government sponsored plan. This purported competition is supposed to “keep them honest.”

Obama presents this idea as if there currently isn’t any non-profit health insurance group keeping those for-profits honest. He acts as if he has some sort of new idea, one that currently doesn’t exist. But the truth is many states already have non-profit health groups. On top of that one of these non-profits is usually one of the largest insurance groups around.

That group would be Blue Cross and Blue Shield. John Lott, economist and author of “Freedomnomics,” gives us some of the facts:

What Mandates Do To Our Insurance

-By Warner Todd Huston

There has been a lot of talk about mandates emanating from the federal government to force each of us to buy healthcare insurance but what do those mandates do to the insurance itself? And are they even Constitutionally justified?

First of all we need to remind everyone that these mandates cannot possibly be Constitutional. After all, the Constitution does not give Congress the power to demand that the citizens buy a certain product. The Constitution only gives Congress the power to tax, not to serve as an arm of any industry. These mandates will essentially make the federal government an insurance salesman and this is most certainly unconstitutional.

Still, even if we are unfortunate enough to be burdened with this new system, what will it do to our insurance companies?

Is it American to be Forced Into a Union? In Obama’s America it is!

-By Warner Todd Huston

Welcome to Obama’s America where you are forced to become a union member even if you had no idea you were being inducted into one. In fact, in Obama’s America you won’t even know you are IN a union until you notice union dues are being withheld from your checks.

This is the case in Michigan where Sherry Loar and Dawn Ives work out of their home talking care of children for low-income families. One Friday the pair realized that union dues were being withheld from the checks they receive from the state for the subsidized daycare they perform for local families.

As it happens, neither woman voted to join a union nor even knew that they’d be forcefully inducted into one. They didn’t even know their job had a union.

Mandates Must be Unconstitutional

-By Warner Todd Huston

Imagine a day when a president could tell you that you have to buy something or become a criminal via federal law if you don’t. Imagine a day when you are not allowed to choose not to buy a certain product. In a land of true freedom and liberty worrying about the arrival of such a day would seem ridiculous. But what was once risible is now a frightening reality if Obamacare gets passed.

Now, if Obamacare passes, any citizen that does not “choose” to buy healthcare insurance will be deemed a criminal that will be penalized under the law. Obama’s IRS stormtroopers will come a’knockin to make sure you fulfill your duty to the state.

So what could stop these anti-liberty mandates? According to David B. Rivkin, Jr., and Lee A. Casey, the Constitution of the United States should. Rivkin and Casey maintain in recent Wall Street Journal piece that Obama’s forced insurance mandates are un-Constitutional.

AFL-CIO Prez Tumka Asked a Few Tough Questions

So what about those union pensions, Mr. Trumka? Your union has severely underfunded your member’s pensions for years. Don’t you care if your members have enough to retire on? Isn’t that what your union promised to them?

Well someone is asking these questions, anyway. Unfortunately, it isn’t the bought-off Obama administration. It’s the Free Enterprise Alliance and they are starting with these billboards in Pittsburgh.

Too bad AFL-CIO bosses don’t care enough about their members to answer such pesky questions, eh?

Of course, the pensions for the bosses and union management are fully funded, so why should Trumka care? Boss pensions are juuuuust fine. As long as he’s getting his, why worry about those foolish, annoying, lowly members?

They are such a bother, youse guys know whot I’m talkin’ about?

A Million People Prove NPR Doesn’t Count

-By John Armor

How many people still listen to NPR (National “People’s” Radio) and take it seriously? Apparently that list doesn’t include the editors and reporters for NPR. Two cases in point, both having to do with numbers.

As I was driving up to D.C. for the Rally on the Mall on Saturday, I heard NPR gushing over (excuse me, reporting on) the President Obama’s speech to a Joint Meeting of Congress. In that speech, the President said that “there are 30 million uninsured Americans.” Notice that the number dropped from 45 million because that part of the uninsured are not Americans. They are mostly citizens of Mexico.

The polling of the American people on health care reform has made it crystal clear they do not want American tax dollars paying premiums for foreign citizens. Remember that Cong. Joe Wilson called out, “You lie,” when President Obama was claiming that health care “reform” did not include the illegal aliens. Joe should certainly apologize for interrupting the President, with a true statement.

Brit Hasn’t a Clue About U.S. Politics

-By Warner Todd Huston

Many elitist American leftists like to go about claiming that it is only Americans that are dunces on foreign matters. There is some truth to the accusation that Americans are not knowledgeable about the rest of the world but if a column in the UK Telegraph is any indication it isn’t much better for Britain’s understanding of American politics. Worse, it is plain that even a British journalist hasn’t a clue what he’s on about when attempting to discuss the differences between a Democrat and Republican in today’s climate.

At issue is the incredibly garbled take on American Democrats and Republicans as posted by U.K. Telegraph writer David Lindsay, who claims himself to be a “freelance writer and tutor at Durham University.” One wonders why he doesn’t get a real job.

In “Why real American conservatives should register as Democrats,” Lindsay’s main point seems to be that Republicans really support what the Democratic Party supports and so GOP voters should resign from their party and join the left side of the aisle. But Lindsay’s reasons prove that he doesn’t know a thing about what he’s talking about.

Recently Investor’s Business Daily published the results of a poll that found that an astonishing 45% of doctors polled would rather quit the medical field than suffer under Obamacare.

This is in stark contrast to recent news that a majority of physicians support Obama’s healthcare “reform” policies. IBD disputes this poll and also points out that a recent L.A. Political Science 101: Power Breeds Corruption

-By Nancy Salvato

Chicago is known as “The Windy City” not because it is windy (although anyone who tries to use an umbrella during a heavy rain in the Loop knows how difficult that can prove) but because of the blowhard politicians it has produced throughout the centuries. Chicago’s scandalous history of political corruption began in the l9th century around the time of the Chicago Fire continuing through today, most notably, Governor Blagojevich’s attempt to “sell” President Obama’s Senate seat. Political malfeasance doesn’t begin and end in Illinois, though. Other states have equal or worse reputations.

The Wall Street Journal, in an article titled, A Swamp of Corruption, noted that “Louisiana ranks third in the nation in the number of elected officials per capita convicted of crimes (Mississippi takes top prize).” Paging through the list of politicians on the take is like reading a who’s who in the society pages. Most recently, former Democratic Louisiana congressman, Rep. William Jefferson, was convicted by a federal jury, “of taking bribes on 11 of 16 counts in a case in which agents found $90,000 in his freezer.” Corruption is not unique to what is referred to the modern era in our history.

Is Union Favored Legislation ‘Racist’?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Professor Harry G. Hutchison of George Mason University recently took a look at the union favored Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) and made a startling conclusion. He believes it will harm minorities.

Saying that the EFCA is “arguably the most transformative piece of labor legislation” since 1935, Hutchinson warns that it will seriously harm the rights of workers and the status of minorities alike.

To start, Hutchinson summed up the provisions of the bill.

One of the newest attempts to transform labor relations is the EFCA. The first to disappear under the EFCA would be a system of union democracy whereby unions could only obtain the rights of exclusive representation for firms if they could prevail in a secret-ballot election. Second, the EFCA would eliminate the necessity of a freely negotiated collective bargaining agreement between management and labor and instead substitute compulsory arbitration.

The results of these provisions, though, would prove disastrous as far as Hutchinson is concerned.

I am Loath to Call Americans Stupid, But…

When I see the elitists on the left hold themselves up as being smarter than everyone they survey I am always offended. My American can-do spirit is assaulted by such an elitist opinion. It disgusts me when leftists assume that Americans are stupid. I refuse to accept such an assessment. But then there are stories like this…

Apparently when the House of Representatives voted to admonish Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), now famous for calling out that Obama was a liar during his recent healthcare speech, Americans all across the country rushed to their computers and did some research.

Were they looking up arcane House rules of conduct? How about the names of various elected officials? Maybe they were looking up political history?

LATimes Finally Finds Graphics Like Commie Propaganda Art… And It’s Glenn Beck, NOT Obama

After the last three years of President Obama’s graphics and poster art that evokes the style of graphics used in communist propaganda someone in the Old Media has finally discovered the similarity between today’s political graphics and communist styled propaganda art. And on top of that another we see another member of the Media calling us all “tea baggers”

So which of Obama’s posters is the L.A. Times saying is like commie art? Is it the “Hope” poster where Obama stares off into the distance like a communist leader attempting to inspire confidence in the viewer? Is it one of the other many posters that position Obama in similar poses to umpteen communist posters of ages past?

Nope, it’s Glenn Beck’s Taxpayer March logo that caused the Times to finally see a similarity with communist art.

Obama’s Healthcare Speech Putting Democrats in a Bind

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Associated Press is reporting that Democratic lawmakers are having trouble adding any of Obama’s prescriptions for the nation’s healthcare troubles after the president’s speech delivered before a joint session of Congress last week.

Not only are they having troubles adding Obama’s ideas at this late date, some Congressmen are even saying it is impossible to do so. Many have no desire to do so.

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D, NY), for instance, is saying that hitting the $900 billion funding target is “very difficult,” because keeping the tab that low would reduce coverage for “poor and working people.” Other Democrats are saying that Obama’s claim that he won’t sign the bill “if it adds one dime to the deficit” because all understand that this will kill anything they try to do with Obamacare.

Pols also mentioned that Obama’s request on Medicare prescription drug benefits would also be “difficult” citing costs.

Lastly, the fact that the administration hasn’t bothered to inform us all of the total costs for all of Obama’s healthcare ideas from last week isn’t helping anyone figure out how to satisfy the president’s policy ideas.

Union Boss Admits to Using Members as Political Activists

-By Warner Todd Huston

An interesting admission by James A. Williams, president of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades in Philadelphia, can be seen in an interview he did with the Philly Inquirer. It is an admission that conforms one of the things that anti-union folks have been saying for years, but one union officials are loath to admit.

While discussing the hard economic times, the Philly Inquirer asked how the recession was affecting the union. In his answer President Wilson admitted that his union uses out-of-work members for “political events.” Wilson mentioned that they lower dues to $1 a month after a member has been out of work for more than six months, but that isn’t just the kind hearted union looking out for its members. No, the union expects something in return for that lowering of dues.

The rude, sexually lewd epithet “tea bagger” is the latest snickering, inside joke the Old Media and the left are playing on the average, everyday Americans that have gone out of their way to join the many thousands of on-going Tea Party protests across the country. It also looks like Senator Chris Dodd’s campaign is utilizing the rude name, as well if a report in the Hartford Courant is correct.

First the Courant itself uses the name calling twice in the same piece and then Dodd campaign spokesman Jay Howser joined the rudeness by doing the same thing.

Howser went even farther calling the millions of Americans that have attended Tea Party events in every state of the union “extreme” and the “far right wing.”

Mayo Clinic Loses Millions Because of Medicare

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Anchorage Daily News has a very interesting editorial that reveals that the celebrated Mayo Clinic has lost millions because of Medicare over the last year.

In its editorial the ADN is warning that the public option is “as unhealthy as Medicare” because of the artificially low payments the government remits to healthcare providers, doctors and hospitals.

President Obama and the left love to point to the Mayo Clinic as one of America’s premier medical institutions and rightfully so. But the ADN reveals that the clinic lost $840 million on it’s $1.7 billion worth of Medicare work. ADN notes that the loses that doctors and hospitals are being hit with because the government refuses to pay market prices for services to patients, many doctors and hospitals are limiting new patients on Medicare.

Obama Dissembles Again About His ‘Responsibility’ For Healthcare

-By Warner Todd Huston

In a new 60 Minutes interview, President Obama made a big show about telling correspondent Steve Kroft that he “owns” healthcare if it goes wrong and that because of this he has “every incentive to get this right.”

But is this true? Will Obama face any real, personal consequences for any possible failures of Obamacare if it gets passed? I would say he doesn’t.

In the interview, Obama sonorously tells Kroft,

“I have no interest in having a bill get passed that fails. That doesn’t work. You know, I intend to be president for a while and once this bill passes, I own it. And if people look and say, ‘You know what? This hasn’t reduced my costs. My premiums are still going up 25 percent, insurance companies are still jerking me around,'” Obama explained.

“I’m the one who’s going to be held responsible. So I have every incentive to get this right,” he added.

This claim that he will face consequences if Obamacare becomes a mess later because he didn’t “get it right” is a bald-faced lie.

California’s Mass Job Loss… Except in Government

-By Warner Todd Huston

A recent report by the Sacramento based California Budget Project shows that two out of five working-age Californians are out of work. The jobless rate has not been this bad since 1977. California’s unemployment rate is one of the worst in the country at 12 percent.

Yet, union membership has grown in California despite the recession. And it’s no wonder when looking at the CBP study. On page three, for instance, we see a notation that reports that unionization in government jobs has grown substantially and is also at a much higher percentage of the total sector workforce in California than it is in the rest of the country.

Unionization rates were consistently higher in the public sector than in the private sector in 2008-2009. As Figure 2 shows, public-sector unionism was especially strong in Los Angeles as well as in California: during 2008-2009, well over half of all workers in the California and Los Angeles public sectors were union members. In the nation as a whole, the unionization rate for public-sector workers was 37.0 percent; much higher than the 7.5 percent rate found in the private sector, but well below the rates for public-sector workers in California (57.4%) or Los Angeles (56%).

So, while regular citizens are losing their jobs by the millions, government workers are in clover, riding the gravy train, on easy street.

Shattered Lives: Victims of Government Healthcare

-By Warner Todd Huston

The National Center for Public Policy (nationalcenter.org) has assembled a compendium of horror stories of the “shattered lives” of 100 victims of government healthcare from all over the western world. This book serves as a warning to every advocate of the “free” healthcare that Obama is trying to sell like snake-oil from a traveling case. If government gets control of our healthcare, our entire system will be worse off for it.

In “Shattered Lives: One Hundred Victims of Government Health Care,” author Amy Ridenour presents us with 100 heartwrenching stories of healthcare victims from Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Japan and other western nations, stories that should serve as a warning against our blundering down the destructive path of nationalized healthcare.

Ridenour regales us with tales of self-dentistry because government healthcare refuses service, deaths over canceled operations or long-delayed treatment, and citizens that had to flee their own country to find lifesaving healthcare in other lands. There are tales of babies born in home toilets because government healthcare refused to see a pregnant mother, diseases undiagnosed, and restrictive and ill-conceived rationing to services causing blindness and other ailments.

Will Obamacare Put Abortion Providers in Schools?

-By Warner Todd Huston

In a section innocuously titled “School-Based Health Clinics,” the House bill, H.R. 3200, seems to set up Democrats to invite groups like Planned Parenthood into our schools to serve as a school “health clinic.” (‘Sec. 399Z-1. School-Based Health Clinics.)

And even more insidiously the bill provides for these “clinics” to be initiated immediately — effective date to be July 1, 2010 — whereas much of the rest of H.R. 3200 does not take effect until 2013. Why the rush? If one were cynical, one might think that the fast tracking of these “clinics” was meant to catch critics off guard. After all, if these “clinics” are slipped into our schools before anyone is aware of them, it will be harder to get them out or to protest the whole deal beforehand.

Here is how Sec. 399Z-1 begins:
