Instead of Understanding, Liberals Feel

-By Warner Todd Huston

My recent flap with the extreme leftists in the comics community brought home once again the simple fact that liberals don’t understand the definitions of words, cannot think logically, and don’t have the tiniest ability to understand complex concepts. Despite their mental incapacities, though, they are sure they are smarter, more civilized, and more tolerant than those they hate and all this they assume while they name-call everyone that disagrees with them. To top it all off there is a surfeit of self-esteem, no doubt instilled in them boy our liberal, and failed, public school system.

Last week I wrote a critical analysis of a Marvel Comics comic book that sent these unhinged lefties off the deep end. The criticism thrown at me by these poor, Peter Pan Syndrome suffering folks is, however, a great object lesson in how badly educated, how illogical, and how distempered the left truly is.

These emails and replies to my comic book analysis really brought it home that to be a liberal you must make assumptions of your enemy so that they fit neatly into your preconceived notions of the world and you must never try to ask them any questions to determine if they really do fit into the box you’ve constructed for them. You must assume you are more grown up than those you attack. You must assume that you are more intelligent. You also must assume that people that like the same sort of things that you like must think just like you do. In other words, to be a liberal you must begin every discussion, every consideration of ideological premises, with the base assumption that all good people are just like you. Everyone else is venal, mean, stupid or low. Not just wrong, but evil.

Captain America’s Tarnished Shield Rolls On

-By Warner Todd Huston

Well, looks like this Captain America business is still rolling ever onward. I have been quite amazed at the wide reach this article of mine has found. When I hit the enter key to post my analysis of Captain America #602 I never imagined that I’d be on The Keith Oblermann show (even though few saw it as he only has about 20 viewers!), in the New York Times, the Washington Times, and a million webpages across this great land.

My piece was picked up by the whole of the U.S. Old Media and has forced Marvel Comics to apologize to the Tea Party movement and promise to delete the offending references in later editions.

Well, today’s development. Apparently Carla Hoffman, known in comics circles as a reviewer and commentator on the comics scene, has penned an “open letter” to me hosted on The Comic Book Resources website.

Little Miss Hoffman tried for a hip snarkiness in her open letter to me but her efforts led to failure because she violated the main journalist’s rule: at least TRY to contact your subject. She made the fatal assumption that I had no connection to comics, that I’d never read a single book in my life (perhaps excluding a child’s fascination with them).

Time Magazine: Hummer, Model T Some of ‘Worst Cars of All Time’

-By Warner Todd Huston

When you are asked what is the “worst car of all time,” what first runs through your head? The Le Car, the Corvair, maybe the Edsel? Cars that had horrible sales records, bad safety or engineering records or were just all around failures? Aren’t these the sort of cars that first runs through your head? Doesn’t worst equal failure or unsafe?

Well apparently a common, sensible thought like that doesn’t run through the heads of the folks at Time Magazine when arranging the list of the “50 Worst Cars of All Time.” Time has its own special criteria to determine what a “worst” car is and it isn’t just sales or safety records like one would expect.

Oh, Time did have the Edsel, the Corvair, and the AMC Pacer on its list. Certainly failed vehicles, for sure. Time even had an amusing vehicle invention from 1899 where a fake horses head was attached to the front of an auto so as not to scare the other horses on the road. Fail, big time.

But there was one aspect that Time included in its criteria for determining what was a “worst car” that wouldn’t occur to a sensible person. Oddly, it seems that modern, leftist politics was one of Time’s rules of thumb. That’s right, Time decided that its own leftist politics was a proper reason to proclaim that a car belongs in the “worst” category.

The Intellectuals What Ain’t

-By Warner Todd Huston

There is no better example of how low intellectuals have fallen than the case of Bernard-Henri Lévy, intellectual, provocateur, member of the well-regarded French nouveaux philosophes and, it seems, all around gullible fool.

Bernard-Henri Lévy, better known to those in the know as BHL, has become a laughing stock of modern inteleckshoouls everywhere with the publication of his much anticipated book on philosopher Immanuel Kant.

Oh, there’s sharp criticism in Lévy’s new Kantallope, there’s bomb thrown name calling, and nose-up-turning galore. Kant, according to Lévy, is a “raving lunatic” and a “fake.” And to prove his case Lévy uses the anti-Kanti words of the famous 20th-century philosopher Jean-Baptiste Botul — known as the father of the philosophical school of Botulism.

Yeah. Big problem for BHL, though. Jean-Baptiste Botul is a fictional character made up as a joke in 1999 by a journalist. I mean, come on, if you didn’t see the joke in “the school of Botulism” what sort of bat do you need upside your head to see the truth?

Marvel Comics: Captain America Says Tea Parties Are Dangerous and Racist

-By Warner Todd Huston

** UPDATE ** BELOW Marvel Apologizes

Marvel Comic’s Captain America is the mightiest soldier with the super powerful secret soldier formula that makes him a super man. Sadly, this muscle bound hero that took on the whole Nazi army during WWII seems to be afraid of those American people who’ve joined the Tea Party movement. Not only is Cappy quaking in his little red booties, but he’s sure that the Tea Party folks are dangerous racists, too.

Isn’t it wonderful that a decades old American comic book hero is now being used to turn readers against our very political system, being used to slander folks that are standing up for real American principles in real life — and one called “Captain America” at that?

In issue number 602 of Captain America, a new story line has begun called “Two Americas.” In it the current Captain (there have been a few of them, apparently) is on the trail of a faux Captain America that is mentally deranged and getting chummy with some white supremacist, anti-government, survivalists types going by the name of “the Watchdogs.” While investigating this subversive group, Captain America and his partner The Falcon — a black super hero — have decided to try and infiltrate the secretive organization.

In preparation for the infiltration, Marvel Comics depicts the two super heroes out of costume and observing from a rooftop a street filled with what can only be described as a Tea Party protest. The scene shows crowds of people in city streets carrying signs that say, “stop the socialists,” “tea bag libs before they tea bag you,” and “no to new taxes.” Naturally, the people in these crowds are depicted as being filled with nothing but white folks.

Culture in the Rye

-By Selwyn Duke

Many years ago, I was told a story by a woman I knew whose son had been diagnosed with “A.D.D.” She said that she finally had to take from her boy a book a therapist had given him about how an A.D.D. child acts. The problem? Her son was reading it and then imitating the behavior of the child in it!

Then I remember when someone I know well told me about her 13-year-old’s reaction to being confronted about his misbehavior. He said something to the effect of, “Well, mom, you know, I’m at that age.” But how did he know he was at “that age”?

There is also all the anxiety adolescents are supposed to feel over the “changes in their body,” and we’re told about how tough it is to be a teenager. I don’t know, but I remember my teen years well, and I experienced no such thing. I knew I was moving toward manhood and was happy about it. And whenever the topic might have arisen, it was apparent that my friends were happy about it, too. Why wouldn’t we have been? If you think it’s tough becoming bigger, stronger, faster and better each and every day, try the other side of that hill, when you have to trade in the rollerblades for a Rascal scooter.

Hitchens Says Sports Suck… And I Agree

-By Warner Todd Huston

Well, Christopher Hitchens has finally written something with which I can whole heartedly sign on. In his latest Newsweek piece Hitchens decries the sham that is sports — especially international soccer tournies. He slams the supposed benefits of sports and rightly pinpoints the singular truth that sports brings out the worst in everyone.

Hitchens eviscerates the lie that sports “brings people together,” lays low the lie that sports is good in schools, and obliterates the idiotic babble that sports are in any way filled with good role models — or that they even could present good role models.

I loved this delicious paragraph, delivered after delineating the “shock” that one sports dolt had when another dissed him:

CT Senate Race Gets ‘Retarded’ Over Wrestling Queen’s Shows

-By Warner Todd Huston

Retard-gate is growing, apparently, and it’s coming to the Connecticut Senate race over the mistreatment of a developmentally disabled wrestling character that Senate candidate Linda McMahon’s entertainment company created in 2004.

For those of you unaware, wrestling queen Linda McMahon, former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, is running for the Senate in Connecticut against conservative Rob Simmons.

As it happens, starting in 2004 McMahon’s wrestling shows once featured what was presented as a mentally handicapped wrestler who was stage named “Eugene.” Through the course of this character’s story arc he was savagely beaten in a “cage match,” and was regularly verbally abused by other characters.

For her part, McMahon claims that the character was written as a “hero” that was supposed to inspire “other people with disabilities to strive to achieve their dreams.”

However, McMahon’s opponent Rob Simmons begs to differ. He thinks that the wrestling show mistreated what was presented as a developmentally disabled adult and used him as the butt of jokes. Simmons is calling for McMahon to be held to account for using the developmentally disabled story line.

CATO on Brown: This is like Ted Kennedy being elected in Utah

-By Warner Todd Huston

There’s a lot of analysis out there on why Scott Brown defeated nearly 50 years of Democratic rule of the Massachusetts Senate seat, but the CATO Institute has some cogent, logical points that we should all carefully consider.

But before I give you the CATO video, remember this…. it’s time to get serious, get to work and NOT time to get too cocky. Yes we won Virginia, yes we won New Jersey and now Massachusetts. But let’s make no grand assumptions, let’s not let down our guard, and let’s hear and learn these electoral lessons.

This is a formula that can be used in every state. Yes some of the issues that Scott Brown ran on are local, Massachusetts issues. But since the Democrats have been pretty successful in making the American political scene a national scene and not merely a local one, Brown’s campaign can serve as a successful template for every Republican campaign across the country.

Chgo Alderman Knocks Movie Avatar

-By Warner Todd Huston

Channel 2 News is reporting that Eleventh Ward Alderman James Balcer is railing against the new movie Avatar because it portrays U.S. Marines as murderous villains.

Bachler is a decorated Marine that served in Vietnam and is outraged how the Corps is treated in James Cameron’s film.

Balcer says the film makes Marines “look like lunatics.” In reality, he said, “We are a good, generous country that helps people.”

Of course Ald. Balcer is right. This movie is a technical wonder, certainly. But the story line could have been written by a 10-year-old from Berkeley. It is blatantly anti-capitalist, anti-American, anti-Marine, and anti-military. In fact, it is anti-human. Worse it is based on the simple minded “White man saves the natives” storyline where a white guy discovers the simple, noble natives and turns himself into one of them then turns around to oppose his own people in order to “save” the natives.

This story has been done a thousand times and been done better. Dances With Wolves is that story, the Tom Cruise movie The Last Samurai is that story, to a degree Lawrence of Arabia is that story and all were done better than Avatar.

So good for Ald. Balcer.

This Chick Does Flicks: Sherlock Holmes

-By Ann “Babe” Huggett

Blame it on my British husband for turning me into a fan of Guy Ritchie as a director but I just love his movies! Sure, they’re violent but so is the news and if what is being done to the US Constitution by our ruling elites doesn’t qualify as excessively brutal, I don’t know what is. So, what can a maturing director, whose movies have convoluted plots and Dickensian characters, do but combine 1892 Victorian London and the greatest fictional detective of all, Sherlock Holmes? The mix works and it is magic. Sherlock Holmes is director Guy Ritchie’s masterpiece of grit, grime and gigantic characters all grinding together in an exciting mystery adventure film complete with ersatz occult magic hinting at New World Order trickery.

Sherlock Holmes is a feast for the eyes and a real workout for the educated. You’ve got clues galore, fantastic urban archeology, great costuming, your usual satanic cult, your “dead” rising from the grave, your decadent aristocrats, your gruesome deaths, bare knuckle fighting, scenes in slaughterhouses, crazy contraptions ala Jules Verne, allusions to Cecil Rhodes’ desire to reunite America to Great Britain, the disastrous and premature launching of a sailing vessel, the construction detailing of London’s Tower Bridge being turned into a rough justice gibbet and Escher moments on stairwells.

Why This Conservative Wants To Be Like Al Gore

-By Warner Todd Huston

I have to admit it. I am jealous of former Vice President Al Gore. I want what he’s got, at least in a generalized way.

It isn’t that I envy him for having been vice president. The number two spot has traditionally been one not well regarded and only a few VPs have made the position an important one, if only in a fleeting way. Thomas Jefferson did some excellent work fashioning the procedure of the Senate while he was the veep, Nixon became an important part of Ike’s foreign policy team, and Dick Cheney became, well, Dick Cheney! But Al Gore was not in that class. He, like most other vps, was a seat warmer without much of import to his stint in the junior chair.

The office has been chided as “not worth a warm bucket of spit” (though I am fairly certain VP Garner said the “s” word and not spit), been called “the most insignificant office ever the invention of man contrived or his imagination conceived” by John Adams, and at least one occupant of the office spawned such trenchant bits of philosophy as, “what this nation needs is a good 5-cent cigar.” (That last bit of philosophical legerdemain uttered by vp Thomas Marshal. In other words, the office has not been very consequential on its own merits.)

So, it isn’t Al’s rather pointless stint as VP that I admire. No it’s his almost universal acceptance as a man of great expertise because he once narrated a movie script. Not unlike how so many graying old TV news readers have been hailed as men of substance because they can read aloud with conviction, Al Gore has been hailed around the world because he can read and talk at the same time.

Brilliant!

New Rule of Thumb: History Only Happens in Our Lifetime

-By Warner Todd Huston

It’s a new rule of thumb, apparently, that history doesn’t matter. Fall of Rome? Who cares? WWII? What’s it matter? The Great Depression? Just a blip. It’s NOW that we care about, man. All that history stuff? Pffft. If it isn’t happening now, it doesn’t matter.

This notion that history is for the stuffed shirts of academe and that it doesn’t mean anything to modern, common folks always screams out when these woeful “Top Ten” lists start showing up in the media.

Today we have another example of this historically illiterate sort of list at Time Magazine’s website. There you’ll see history’s “Top 10 Mistresses,” but if you have even a cursory knowledge of history, you’ll also see that there is no sense of history in this list of “history’s famous mistresses.”

Cook Commissioner Tim Schneider: Cut Cook County Film Office

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last month Cook County Commissioner Timothy O. Schneider (R, western suburbs) co-sponsored a budget amendment to axe the Cook County Film Commission from fiscal year 2010.

Quoth Schneider, “The creation of the Cook County Film Commission stands as a prime example of government spending run amok.”

The Film Commission is budgeted at $251,611 for 2010. Schneiber pointed out that there is already a Chicago Film Commission as well as an Illinois Film Commission, s the existence of a Cook County version is unnecessary redundancy.

Earlier in the year, Schneider sponsored and saw passed a campaign finance bill that lowered the personal political contribution allowance from $1,500 to $750 per person for those that have done business with the county, including registered lobbyists.

“This legislation can begin the process of restoring confidence and ensuring that influence peddling is eradicated from Cook County,” Schneider said in his recent newsletter.

Those DVD ‘Special Features’ Rarely that Special

-By Warner Todd Huston

When DVDs first began to contain those now ubiquitous special features, those mini documentaries, series of interviews, or behind the scenes shoots, it seemed like such an exciting idea, especially for film buffs (or series fans). But now that they have become fairly common and now that I’ve seen a lot of them, I have to say that they are almost entirely worthless for anything other than time-wasting, disc stuffers.

Did you know that JJ Abrams is a great camera shaker and is “the life” of the new Star Trek movie? Did you know that no one worked harder than Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy? Isn’t the newest Punisher movie as fun as a real live comic book? Didn’t the actors on Silverado have fun? Wasn’t Patton intense? Aren’t all these films as brilliant as Shakespeare?

Do you care at all?

Is FCC Declaring ‘Open Season’ on Internet Freedom?

-By Scott Cleland

The FCC, in proposing to change the definition of an “open Internet” from competition-driven to government-driven is setting a very dangerous precedent, that it is acceptable for countries to preemptively regulate the Internet for what might happen in the future, even if they lack the legitimacy of constitutional or legal authority to do so, or even if there is the thinnest of justification or evidence to support it.

How can we ever hope to influence China, Iran and other undemocratic regimes to provide more Internet access and freedom to their citizens and businesses when our FCC is proposing a radical take back of existing Internet freedoms without legitimate authority or justification?

The grave mistake the FCC is making in the broader international context is claiming that private companies are the primary threat to Internet freedom and free speech, and not governments. History and common sense tell us only Governments have the effective coercive power to dictate real censorship.

The FCC is effectively declaring “open season” on well-established Internet freedoms.

This Chick Does Flicks: 2012

-By Ann “Babe” Huggett

I’m not given to laughing at inappropriate moments in movies, especially when it’s literally the end of the world, but no one warned me that within the current disaster mega hit 2012 there lurks such utter and impossible physical lunacy that all you can do is laugh. When 2012’s sneak peek trailer was released earlier this year, it went viral on the web precisely because the trailer defied belief what with it’s violent upheaval special effects, star John Cusak’s crazy limo driving and Tom McCarthy’s sudden ability to segue from inexperienced student pilot to a Millennium Falcon flight jockey thanks to a massive overdose of adrenalin form which he probably is still recovering…recovering that is if his character hadn’t gone into the meat grinder gears of a later day Noah’s Ark right towards the end.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. The official 2012 web site has a synopsis so it’s worth quoting if only to get the minimal divorced-daddy-who-still-secretly-loves-his-wife-and-kids-saves-them-against-all-the-laws-of-physics-and-current-boyfriend-of-ex-wife-and-lives-happily-ever-after human interest subplot. To wit: Never before has a date in history been so significant to so many cultures, so many religions, scientists and governments. “2012″ is an epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors.

New Hollywood Movie Says Islam Destroyed by 2012!

-By Warner Todd Huston

Roland Emmerich’s new end-of-the-world disaster film 2012 has a rollicking good time destroying every monument to man’s architectural genius in the world. The Sistine Chapel goes kablooie, as does the Vatican and the giant Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. The White House gets flattened, too. All man’s most well known landmarks get turned to dust by Emmerich’s over-the-top movie effects team.

But by the time the year 2012 rolls around, director Roland Emmerich is obviously saying that Islam has already been wiped off the face of the Earth before the end came. There are no Saudi scenes of mayhem and destruction in his film. No Iranian landmarks get caved in, no destruction of Mecca and Medina are shown in Emmerich’s mashup masterpiece.

One can only conclude that Roland Emmerich has decided that Islam has been whipped out by an enraged western civilization before the year 2012. Emmerich is obviously saying that all Muslims have been put to death and all Muslim holy sites will have been erased from the earth long before 2012 comes to end all of civilization.

Why Google Is Not Neutral

-By Scott Cleland

After discussing whether Google should buy The New York Times, Google decided against it because it “would damage its ‘neutral’ identity,” per Ken Auletta’s just-published book “Googled: The End of The World as We know It.”

Google has long claimed to be neutral. Their corporate philosophy statement claims: “We never manipulate rankings to put our partners higher in our search results and no one can buy better PageRank. Our users trust our objectivity and no short-term gain could ever justify breaching that trust.”

As the world-leading corporate proponent of an industrial policy to mandate net neutrality for all its potential broadband competitors in cloud computing, and as the beneficiary of “The Google Loophole” in the FCC’s proposed open Internet regulations (para 104), it is fair to stress test whether Google’s claim of a “neutral’ identity is true or just cleverly-executed PR.

Union Violates Free Speech, the Right to Vote and Smashes Common American Democracy

-By Warner Todd Huston

There’s not much that union supporters and I can agree upon. But here is one incident where I can wholeheartedly support the aggrieved members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) who have found themselves victims of their own union.

The SEIU wanted to renegotiate a contract with officials of Sonoma County, California for its in-home healthcare workers supported by county funds. SEIU representatives met with and crafted a new contract with the assistance of County officials. This was all done behind closed doors without the general knowledge of or the assistance of the workers themselves.

But that isn’t the main problem here. It’s how the contract was approved that shows how little the SEIU cares for democracy, member’s rights, and the American way.

A Great Halloween Website: Bob Burns’ Hollywood Halloween

-By Warner Todd Huston

Folks, you just have to set a side some time to go visit a great site that will help get you in the mood for Halloween.

Bob Burns is best known as a movie effects guy, actor, sci-fi and horror movie props collector, and all around horror movie enthusiast, but starting in the late 1960s he also began to turn his California bungalow home into a Halloween horror show for the neighborhood kiddies.

But, as the years rolled on and as Burns’ Hollywood effects maker friends began to get involved the shows grew to some amazing, effects laden spectaculars that began to draw people from hundreds of miles away to see the show.

Anyway, Burns is offering four half hour videos about the shows they did and the videos are really fun to watch. Really nostalgic.

So far, three of the webisodes have been posted with one more coming next week. You just got to see them.

So, check it out at Bob Burns’ Hollywood Halloween.

Chessboxing Latest Addition To Competitive Sports

-By Ann “Babe” Huggett

One thing that I love about the British is that when they take a cultural idea, no matter how off-the-wall from another nation, that idea somehow morphs into something far grander than the original concept before it hits our shores. And so it is with Chessboxing, the latest hybrid competitive sport gaining popularity in the UK. Originally theorized in a comedy routine by Serbian comic, Enki Bilal, and first staged before a crowd of 800 in a church in 2003 by Dutch artist, Iepe Rubingh, Chessboxing consists of 11 rounds of alternating speed chess and boxing with the chess segments four minutes long and the boxing segments three minutes long. The winner is determined by whoever knocks out their opponent first either through checkmate or a finishing punch, the judge’s decision or if one of the opponents exceeds 12 minutes of chess time.

Famous Leftist Michael Moore Snubs Union in Flimmaking

-By Warner Todd Huston

Michael Moore fancies himself a man of the left. He’s many times claimed to be the best friend to all unions. He’s claimed to be a man of the people… well, one that’s a mutli millionaire that rides about in limos, anyway. He’s even trying to advertise his new film by giving free tickets to union members. But, one union is refusing to accept those free tickets. Why? Because Moore somehow forgot to hire union stagehands when he made that film.

Like most of what he does, Moore’s lefty rhetoric is made the lie by his actual actions.

Moore did not hire any members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees for his newest film and because of that the American Federation of Teachers has officially turned away his offer of free tickets to his new film, “Communism, a love story” (I think that’s the title… isn’t it?).

Ooops. Looks like Moore is as “real” as the MGM backlots!

Once again, Hollywood Jabs Sarah Palin

-By Warner Todd Huston

We’ve seen it before. Hollywood seems to need to find a way, any way, to jab Governor Palin as much as possible. Case in point we have the soon to be released movie titled “Did You Hear About The Morgans?” starring Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Right in the trailer for this new laugh riot film is a jab at Palin. But it is a typically illogical jab, one that makes no sense at all. But it IS a jab and I guess logic isn’t necessary to the good folks in Hollyweird if it results in a jab at Palin.

The premise is that Hugh and Jessica are a married couple from New York that witness a Mafia hit and end up in witness protection in Wyoming. The jab comes in when Parker sees her first woman in a cowboy hat and worriedly says, “Oh my God it’s Sarah Palin.”

Guffaws all around, eh?

Of course, the whole thing is idiotic. Sarah Palin is not known for cowboy hats. Sarah Palin is not from Wyoming. Sarah Palin is not a south westerner at all. I would suggest that even idiot New Yawkers are aware that Palin is Alaska personified, not Wyoming!

It is also a little incongruous that the movie is portraying Hugh Grant as a married man. I thought all he cared about was prostitutes?

I also have to say that Sarah Jessica Parker is looking very old in this trailer. This woman is not aging well, to be sure.

That’s Hollyweird for ya.

Deluded Restaurateur, Bigoted Anti-White Environmentalist & Montel Bong Hits: Headline Potpourri #8

-By Frederick Meekins

Michael Savage has been dropped from a station in his hometown of San Francisco. As the Bible says, a prophet is without honor in his own land. It is claimed the move was made because the station wanted to go in a different philosophical direction with more contemporary content. In other words, the station managers were actually hoping to propagate leftwing debauchery.

Because they don’t want to listen to Glenn Beck, a group of Michigan leftists believes no one else should be allowed to either. From the story, one gets the impression that the group of rabblerousers aren’t even members of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce who invited Beck. Does the Chamber of Commerce go and protest whatever leftwing dregs address the socialist conclaves? Did conservatives rampage outside this annual event when serpent man James Carville addressed the event in years past?

Socialistic anti-White bigot Cornel West is scheduled to address a prominent environmentalist conference in Washington. Pluralists will yammer that this organization should have the liberty to invite anyone they want to address their convention. Quite true. However, I am not among these tolerancemongers who are picketing the Michigan Chamber of Commerce for daring to invite Glenn Beck. It must be remembered that, unlike those at 9/12 rallies and Tea Parties, leftists usually destroy property at their protests.
