Hultgren Statement On President Obama’s Address To Congress

From the office of Rep. Randy Hultgren (14th District)…

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (IL-14) tonight released the following statement regarding President Barack Obama’s address to a joint session of Congress.

Tonight, I attended President Obama’s address to Congress because, although I expected partisan rhetoric but little in the way of new ideas, I felt that it was my constitutional responsibility to do so. Unfortunately, despite his premise of bipartisanship, the President’s prescriptions for our economy were political and wholly inadequate. Once again he urged more scattershot ‘stimulus’ spending, at a time when we should be husbanding our constituents’ hard-earned tax dollars and ensuring that they are spent as wisely as possible.

I agree with President Obama that investing in our nation’s infrastructure is needed and will create jobs. But we cannot do so blindly. We must ensure that our investments are targeted and timely, and we must work hard to cut red tape and limit the permitting delays that currently plague our investments in infrastructure improvement.

While I also believe that tax reform is long overdue, I was disappointed to hear him resurrect his calls on increasing taxes. It is absolutely the wrong time to be raising taxes on Americans that Main Street often calls small business owners, entrepreneurs, or job creators.

Irrelevant Jobs Speech: The Presidential Speech No One Attended

-By Warner Todd Huston

President Obama gave his much delayed “jobs” speech on Thursday, one he’s been promising since 2008. Unfortunately for this president, few people much cared. In fact, the most damning indictment about how irrelevant this speech and this president is was seen during the speech in the House gallery, a space that was, unlike any other presidential address, nearly empty.

So, what if a president gave a speech and no one came?

Dana Milbank reveals the most damning indictment of how unimportant this president has become by reporting the sparse attendance for Obama’s speech.

Eric Holder: Fast & Furious? What is that, a Movie?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Remember that old 60s TV show Hogan’s Heroes? If so you’ll remember Sgt. Schultz’ catch phrase, “I know nothiiiing!” Well U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder isn’t quite as fat as good ol’ Sgt. Schultz, but he sure has the catch phrase down pat because Holder now says he knows nothiiiing about Obama’s arming of Mexican narco-terrorists with the policy called Operation Fast and Furious. Or did he?

I’ve always wondered how Hogan’s Heroes was ever greenlighted for a TV series. I mean, can you imagine the pitch meeting? “So, it’s a half hour comedy about hilarious Nazis. Get it? Funny Nazis!” How the heck did that get sold only twenty years after WWII ended? But, imagine the same scenario for Operation Fast and Furious. “See, we’ll give murderers and narco-terrorists a bunch of guns and hand grenades. It’ll really work to help us stop them from getting guns and hand grenades. No I really mean it!”

But Sgt. Eric Schultz knows “nothiiiing”! Yeah, right…

Actress Mila Kunis: Middle America Stupid for Not Loving Obama

-By Warner Todd Huston

It is always amusing to hear actors and actresses venture into the unfamiliar territory of politics when interviewers are cruel enough to broach such issues. Sadly, actress Mila Kunis is no exception to that Hollyweird tendency toward guffaw inducing political bloviating. Naturally and in keeping with most of the rest of the industry, in a new interview she’s disgorging that prosaic, ill-conceived, left-wing trope that she heard somewhere or another that serves as the basis of her “opinion.”

Of course she’s all a gush over The One. “I love Barack Obama, I voted for him and I will forever be proud of my vote,” she is reported as saying to Britain’s Stylist magazine.

Kunis, it appears, considers herself highly informed about politics and most especially on how wonderfully she thinks Obama is doing in office. Conversely, she seems blissfully unaware of the zero job growth we just experienced not to mention the highest unemployment this country has experienced since The Great Depression. She seems also completely ignorant of the trillions of dollars of debt that Obama has piled up.

Still, she is sure that the compromises that she thinks Obama made in recent economic policies are going to hurt us.

Lefty Protesters: Here’s a Poll to Help Us Find Out What We are REALLY Mad About

-By Warner Todd Huston

I had to laugh when I found out about the left’s newest protest du jour. They are hopin’ mad, don’t cha know? So mad that they are busy organizing marches, protests, civil disobedience, and all sorts of activities to protest it all. But amusingly they aren’t even sure what it is they are mad about.

So, like all good citizens in the age of technology, they’ve created a Facebook poll to find out what they should protest!

Now, let me say this: if you are being oppressed by someone, if your life is so bad that you need to organize protests, usually “the problem” is pretty obvious in its seriousness. I mean, if things are so bad that you need mass resistance, you shouldn’t need any Facebook polls to discover what the problem is. It just should be pretty darn obvious.

Other folks in our modern age don’t need polls to find out what to protest. The so-called Arab Spring has its dictators to oppose. The Chinese Falun Gong have that whole being tortured and murdered by Chinese authorities thing going on — a pretty good thing to protest, I’d say. Heck, even though I don’t agree with them, many in the Eurotrash set have something to protest in that their governments are finally wising up and cutting entitlements. It’s all some pretty obvious stuff to oppose, murder, oppression, and entitlement cuts is.

From the Office of Illinois State Senator Kirk Dillard…

State Senator Kirk Dillard (R-Westmont) called upon his local volunteers and precinct committeemen to suspend political petition passing and other political activities this weekend in observance of the September 11th terrorists attacks 10th year anniversary. Live Tweeting Obama’s Jobs Speech: More Big Government Boondoggles

-By Warner Todd Huston

As I often do, I live Tweeted Obama’s address to the joint session of congress, but for sure this speech was little else but yet another plea from Obama for giant piles of government money to be thrown around in a bacchanalia of Keynesian spending. He may not have used the newly verboten word “stimulus,” but that is really all he was offering; another giant stimulus program.

His “jobs” program was nothing but a sop to government unions. Worse his claim that it is “aid for” by attacking the eeeevil rich is as absurd as can be. Even worse still, it’s the same failed ideas he’s been offering for seven years since he first began to run for president (you know when he was pretending to be the junior senator from Illinois).

As to the attacks on the rich — and who is going to make all those new jobs if the rich are destroyed — any sensible look at the stats of who is paying taxes will show the rich already do pay their fair share.

Is Society Breaking Down? Or Are Kids Just Being Kids?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Society is breaking down all across the western world. Unfortunately, it is bands of youths doing the breaking, literally. So, what should be done? How do we regain a level of respect for others, a respect of the rule of law and private property in our increasingly out of control youth? And what and or who is at fault?

A recent attack of a store clerk in Dallas, Texas reveals a disrespect for the law, an immediate resort to violence, and a hatred of simple civility that too many young Americans are mired in these days. Similarly, in Europe we’ve seen for several years, now, a series of riots by young people (or Yobs, as the Brits call them) variously over Muslim issues, implementation of austerity measures, and simple thuggery. All of these “reasons” utterly illegitimate…

USA Today Hit Piece on Christian Defense Attorney, Jay Sekulow

-By Warner Todd Huston

USA Today published a story recently by Bob Smietana of the Nashville newspaper The Tennessean attacking the integrity and work of well-known Christian First Amendment defense attorney Jay Sekulow that is shocking for what is left out.

Sekulow is the head man of the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), a Washington D.C.-based organization that takes on attackers of Christian’s First Amendment rights to free exercise of religion, a tempting target in some corners of America’s political establishment.

In fact, writer Smietana didn’t just write one piece attacking Sekulow and the ACLJ but in the space of only a few days wrote two. In one piece Smietana accuses Sekulow and his family of making too much money from the charities they represent and in the second he claims that the ACLJ might be improperly pursuing cases not in its tax exempt charter.

In both cases Smietana employs the “some say” style of indictment by writing innuendoes backed up by little actual evidence, but the piece in USA Today is by far the worst example of the tactic.

Obama Hypocrisy: From ‘Talking to Each Other in a Way That Heals,’ to Dismissing ‘Kabuki Theater’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Barack Obama is nothing less than a hypocrite on his admonitions over public discourse and the latest example of this truth lies in his refusal to condemn the violence-tinged language of Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa not to mention his similar silence on the obscene rhetoric of many of the leading members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

While Obama has tsk tsked folks on the right like Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin and told the nation that we need to start “talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds,” he has turned a blind eye to his own vice president calling political opponents “terrorists,” members of Congress saying that Republicans and Tea Partiers can “go straight to hell,” and just this week walked on stage grinning like a Cheshire Cat immediately after Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa told a Detroit crowd that they intended to “take those sons a bitches out.”

Obama loves to sound as if he’s somehow above old fashioned, boilerplate rhetoric or the mudslinging that is associated with down-and-dirty politics. He not only claims to avoid such rhetoric himself but acts the national scold and wags fingers at others that do indulge such tactics. Well, he does if it happens to be his political opponents indulging that sort of rhetoric, that is. When his side does it, the scold in chief is suddenly silent.

Taxpayer Advocate Dan Patlak Announces Bid for Re-Election to Board of Review

From the office of Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Dan Patlak…

Wheeling – Commissioner and taxpayer advocate Dan Patlak today announced his intention to run for re-election to the Cook County Board of Review. Patlak, the only Republican on the three member Board was first elected in 2010. He is the first Board commissioner in history to devote full time to the position. In his first campaign for the mostly suburban (1st District) seat Patlak ran on his qualifications having previously worked at the Board as an analyst for eight years, serving as a local township assessor, being a Certified Illinois Assessing Officer and holding a real estate license since 1986. Commissioner Patlak’s re-election campaign will stress his record of accomplishment since his December 2010 swearing in.

“The Cook County Board of Review is more than just a body that adjudicates assessment appeals,” said Patlak. “It is also an office that has a responsibility to empower taxpayers by educating them about how the property tax system works. That’s why the seminars I’ve conducted throughout my district focus not just on the appeal process but also explain the role of exemptions and some of the intricacies about why tax bills are what they are. Taxpayers have a right to expect that their elected officials will focus their energies on serving the public. That’s why I work every day side-by-side with the employees of the Board to make it a more efficient and taxpayer friendly body,” concluded Patlak.

Ron Sandack Announces Candidacy 81st House District

From the Sandack for State Rep…

Downers Grove, IL – State Senator Ron Sandack announced today that he will run for State Representative in the 81st House District. Sandack was appointed to the State Senate in November of 2010 to replace State Senator Cronin, now DuPage County Board Chairman, in the 21st District.

“It is time to restore Illinois to its rightful place as the best State in the Midwest and the economic engine of America. I am introducing my prescription to restore our State to its inherent greatness. I call it “Five to Revive Illinois.” These initiatives are based on principles I championed as Mayor of Downers Grove,” said Sandack.

“We must return to a job-friendly environment where businesses can flourish and families can thrive; leaner government focused on the basics; ethics reforms to clean up Illinois’ tainted culture; fiscally prudent management to finally stop Illinois’ continued descent to the basement in every economic category and open government to provide access to the public and accountability for officials,” said Sandack.

Palestinians Use Obama’s Own Words to Support Their Efforts

-By Warner Todd Huston

A new radio ad being played in Palestinian Authority controlled areas uses Obama’s own words to support an independent Palestinian state even as the administration’s actual policy is to discourage just such a thing. This incident really does show how little Obama thinks before he speaks. It also shows how poor he is at foreign policy.

In a 2010 speech, Obama delivered some very conciliatory words about the possibility of a new Palestinian state saying, “When we come back here next year, we can have an agreement that can lead to a new member of the United Nations, an independent, sovereign state of Palestine living in peace with Israel.”…

AP Editorializing in the ‘News’ Again

-By Warner Todd Huston

In a recent article on the dissatisfaction of Big Labor once again we see making its way into what is otherwise supposed to be a normal, everyday “news” story, the Associated Press indulging its penchant for using biased labels and left-wing “definitions” in order to push a left-wing agenda on its readers. Even while presenting straight “news” the AP can’t resist swinging all terms and discussions to the liberal side of the fence, a tactic that it employs to push every story to the left.

In an article headlined, “Labor Unions Adjust to New Reality Under Obama,” AP writer Sam Hannanel reports the dissatisfaction that Big Labor leaders are increasingly expressing about their Obammessiah. Even though he’s been the most union-friendly president in American history their grumbling is rising as they see Obama “failing” them.

The complaint is that Obama hasn’t done enough for unions — an astounding claim for what he has done for them in comparison to what past presidents have done.

You know It’s Bad When Even Leftist British Comedian Says England ‘No Longer English’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Wow. You know it’s gotten bad in the U.K. when a left-wing actor and British icon is now saying that his country has lost its essential Englishness. It looks like Monty Python alum John Cleese has “funny walked” his way into a bit of a controversy over his remarks, and this time from the left for a change.

Last week the 71-year-old comedian told a Sydney, Australia TV audience that London was “no longer an English city.”

You could see the steam come from the left’s ears over that one.

According to The Sun, Cleese was asked about what he felt about the yob riots that plagued England in August. Cleese apparently wasn’t very sanguine of the state of things in jolly old England.

Illinois GOP State Central Committee Meeting: Sound and Fury Signifying No Changes

-By Warner Todd Huston

In one of the most well attended yet contentious State Central Committee meetings for some time, the movers and shakers of the Illinois GOP met on Tuesday evening to attempt to decide if the system for certifying delegates for GOP presidential candidates should be changed. The short answer is that there was a lot of sound and fury from party members lower on the food chain, much debate from those on top, and questions all around all of which resulted in a failure of the proposal to make the change. In the end a resolution was passed to keep it all the same as it was in 2008.

Beginning at 5 PM the meeting at the Boilingbrook Country Club was well attended by both SCC members, concerned party members, a few county party chairs, committeemen, and Tea Party activists. House leader Tom Cross made an appearance as did long-time conservative activist Jack Roeser. Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford was also there, like many of the others, to speak about the proposed rules change.

I should note that one reason this rules change was contemplated is that the national Republican Party is trying to get every state to change their system into one of proportional representation of delegates to the convention. The RNC gave Illinois the leeway to change its process and several activists took this opportunity to propose a major change to the system, a change that meets the law as well as state and national party rules.

Certainly the change being contemplated was extensive. Currently, the presidential candidates are awarded delegates via the ballot box, a method only three other states favor. Campaigns come to Illinois, build their Illinois machine, and solicit for delegates. These delegates then have to stand for election on the primary ballot. To do so they must each get 600 signatures of voters in their district so that they, the delegates, can get on the election ballot. Then, those elected are considered official delegates to the GOP nomination convention.

Illegal Hand Grenade Dealer Let Slip by BATF & Indiana Joins Gunrunner Scheme

-By Warner Todd Huston

Now that Operation Fast and Furious has been finally getting some media coverage — though still not nearly enough for how bad it is — we are seeing other major failures of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATF) in offshoots of Fast and Furious. In one instance, the BATF indulged a failed attempt to use a hand grenade dealer as a way to track Mexican narco-terrorists and in Indiana the BATF also used the ideas of Fast and Furious to track guns in Indiana.

In the case of the hand grenades, we find that the same office in Arizona responsible for so many lost guns through Fast and Furious also allowed to escape a guy selling parts to make hand grenades to Mexican narco-terrorists. And they didn’t just lose him, either. They actually had arrested the guy but let him go imagining they could follow him to his Mexican connections… THEN lost him. Total incompetents…

Illinois GOP to Change How Presidential Candidate Delegates Chosen

-By Warner Todd Huston

In a follow up to my post last week on the proposed changes on how Illinois selects the delegates for GOP presidential candidates, more needs to be said about this as on the evening of Tuesday, September 6, the Illinois GOP State Central Committee will meet to discuss whether or not the changes will be accepted.

My points made last week about the State Central Committee endeavoring to take away even more ability of Illinois GOP voters to influence the milieu of Republican politics in Illinois was written before I had seen the final wording of the resolution in question. From the old language I had seen up to that time, it seemed pretty clear that the GOP State Central Committee was trying to take even more power unto itself. This was intolerable, especially after so much GOP failure over the last decade in the Land of Lincoln.

However, I have now seen what is up to now the full proposal, the one that will be discussed at the Tuesday SCC meeting. The most recent proposal mitigates my fears somewhat… but not entirely.

Colorado School Places Saudi Arabian Flag Above U.S. Flag

-By Warner Todd Huston

An elementary school in Fort Collins, Colorado came under fire last week for having placed in the school a smaller sized Saudi Arabian flag in a higher, more prominent position that the flag of the United States. Many locals called this a disrespectful display and even wondered if it was part of some effort at anti-American indoctrination.

Colorado blog Greeley Report first noted the flag controversy by posting a photograph of the lobby display calling the positioning of the two flags “an outrage” and saying how the disrespect to the U.S. flag “shows how the indoctrination process continues without your consent or knowledge.”

Bauder Elementary School Principal, Brian Carpenter, told the Greeley Gazette that this was simply a careless mistake. Not only was nothing meant by the placement of the flags, but the matter was quickly corrected to have the U.S. flag hang higher than the others in the lobby.

Arie Friedman Announces Candidacy for Ill. State Senate

From the Arie Friedman for 29th District Ill. State Senate campaign…

Over 100 supporters march with candidate in Buffalo Grove parade

Touching off what will likely be a referendum on last winter’s state income tax hike; Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman announced his candidacy for the State Senate as over 100 supporters gathered about him just before stepping off as Team Friedman in the Buffalo Grove Labor Day weekend parade.

Friedman, 45, is the only announced Republican candidate. West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison of Deerfield, a former Republican, is the sole Democrat to have announced thus far for the 2012 race in the newly drawn 29th District, which takes in the southeast corner of Lake County and parts of Wheeling, Palatine and Northfield Townships in Cook County. Incumbent State Sen. Susan Garrett (D-29th) recently announced her retirement.

In speaking to his volunteers, Friedman called for repeal of the state income tax hike and declared repeal would be a centerpiece issue in his campaign. He noted the income tax increase would be a defining issue between him and Morrison, should she become his opponent after the March 20 primaries.

That Old Recipe for Success

-By Warner Todd Huston

I wrote this for our monthly newsletter for HHH Consulting, thought I’d share it with everyone…

People have made millions on self-help books telling people how to take their first steps down that road to success. Whole aisles in the bookstores are stuffed with the things. 101 Ways to Succeed, if only one! But, really, what is a recipe for success? The truth is, the real recipe for success has never changed since the first human began to think farther than just his own immediate needs.

We here at HHH strive to observe the only true set of rules for success: Excellence, perseverance, and graciousness. But let’s face it, there is no secret to success. The three words above offer the only real path to a worthy success.

Those three words are not exclusive to any particular sort of success. They don’t make you successful at business, or the military, or politics. It’s a recipe for every walk of life, really.

Dear American, You Owe the U.S. Gov’t $31,871

-By Warner Todd Huston

Thanks to the profligate spending in Washington D.C., each American citizen’s share of the debt is now up to $31, 871, as you can see by the chart below…

But that is nothing compared to where it will be in just a few short years. As the chart shows if things continue the way they are now, by 2032 each American’s share of the debt will soar to over $100,000. And by 2050 each American’s burden will be closing in on $300,000.

These are the result of Washington’s drunken spending sprees and the unfunded mandated spending that politicians continue to push. Without entitlement reform and a way to cut spending, the United States of America will default. There simply is no way to maintain these wild levels of spending.

This chart can be found in the Heritage Foundation’s 2011 Budget Book which features charts on federal spending, revenue, debt and deficits, and entitlement programs.

Illinois Policy Institute: That is SO Illinoying!‏

From the Illinois Policy Institute…

Many of you are familiar with FOIA requests: they allow engaged citizens to request public documents. State requirements ensure governments provide these documents in a timely manner.

But on Friday, Gov. Quinn signed a bill that weakened these rules. Now, governments will be allowed to characterize citizens as “recurrent requesters.” If a citizen requests more than 15 documents in a month or 50 in a year, government entities no longer need to respond promptly.

This law punishes citizens who pay close attention. Instead of creating new obstacles for the very people who are most engaged in holding our government accountable, we should be celebrating their efforts.

Obama’s Gun Running: White House Officials Knew More Than They Claimed, Also More Guns Showing Up at US Crime Scenes

-By Warner Todd Huston

The details of Obama’s illicit gun running program to arm Mexican narco-terrorists get worse by the day, it seems. Not only have we now discovered that at least three White House national security officials were briefed about Operation Fast and Furious, but it also looks like BATF officials tried to cover up the fact that their illicitly sold guns were being found at U.S. crime scenes after the death of border agent Brian Terry.

The L.A.Times reports that three White House national security officials had received emails about the progress of Operation Fast and Furious. This seems to contradict past claims by the White House that no one in Obama’s administration was aware of the program…
