Roskam and Kinzinger Applaud House Passage of Energy Tax Prevention Act

Bill prevents EPA from instituting job-crushing energy taxes

Congressman Peter Roskam, Chief Deputy Whip, and Congressman Adam Kinzinger have issued statements after the House passed the Energy Tax Prevention Act, 255 – 172, to block the EPA from imposing cap-and-trade by regulation:

Congressman Peter Roskam

“I applaud the House for blocking new job-crushing energy taxes on families and employers. Americans have already overwhelmingly rejected a national energy tax by cap and trade, and the EPA’s proposal is just a back-door effort to accomplish exactly that by regulation. Unilaterally regulating greenhouse gases would increase energy costs in every home and every business, meaning higher bills and less jobs. It would cripple manufacturers – job creators – who use roughly one-third of our nation’s energy. For my manufacturers in the western and northwestern suburbs of Chicago, I’m glad the House acted to stop this job-crushing regulation.”

Congressman Adam Kinzinger

“Twenty-one months ago, Washington Democrats forced passage of the controversial cap and trade legislation through the House of Representatives. While cap and trade failed in the Senate, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is still attempting to enforce a backdoor cap and trade system on the American people.

“Today, the House approved the Energy Tax Prevention Act of 2011. Without this legislation, we are simply stepping to the side while the EPA imposes a cap-and-trade agenda which could mean even higher gas prices, increased utility rates, manufacturing jobs being sent overseas, and hampering our overall economic recovery.

“The Energy Tax Prevention Act is an effective, bipartisan approach to stop the EPA’s cap and tax agenda. It takes necessary steps to protect jobs and restores the Clean Air Act to its original purpose by repealing action already taken by the EPA to impose a bureaucratic climate change agenda.

“Manufacturers and energy producers at the local and national level, such as Edison Power in the Eleventh Congressional District and the National Association of Manufacturers, have made it clear that the Energy Tax Prevention Act is necessary in order to curtail the EPA’s overreaching regulations and create the certainty job creators need to grow their businesses and get more folks back to work here at home.

“Congress must focus on removing these regulatory obstacles in order to create long-term economic growth.”

Rep. Peter Roskam: High Taxes Have Consequences

-By Illinois Congressman Peter Roskam, GOP Chief Deputy Whip

Note: Caterpillar CEO Doug Oberhelman will testify before the Ways & Means Trade Subcommittee today.

Illinois and other states have recently made headlines for their declining populations. Whether they realize it or not, what states like Illinois are learning the hard way is that over-taxing and over-regulating has consequences. And Illinois is now learning that one painful consequence is job loss.

Caterpillar, a Fortune 500 company that employs 23,000 workers in Illinois, currently finds itself dealing with a new tax increase in an already over-taxed state. Their CEO, Doug Oberhelman, sent a warning shot on March 21st with a letter to Illinois’ new Democrat Governor Pat Quinn:

38 Days Later: Senate Has Failed to Act:

“We’re 38 days away from when the House acted an d passed something over to the Senate and we haven’t seen any substantive Senate action in that entire time. So before the House is asked to come back and take another position, the Senate has to act, and we’ve seen absolutely nothing.”

Ohio Senator Brown: Card Check is Dead

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Hill newspaper has an interesting quote from Ohio Democrat Senator Sherrod Brown. He says the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), of the Card Check bill is a dead issue in the senate this year.

Senator Brown was being interviewed on WVIZ radio in Ohio when he was asked what he thought about the success of the EFCA in the Senate for the 112th Congressional session. “It’s not going to happen now,” the senator said.

If this is true then Big Labor should be extremely upset with President Obama and the Democrat leadership in congress. Will they take out their anger by withholding their enthusiastic support of Democrats in 2012?

One would think that this singular failure of the Democrats to get Big Labor’s most wished for legislation passed would be a deal breaker for labor. After all, labor has spent over $400 million in the last few years on getting Democrats elected and it seems that all that money went for no benefit to them. Labor’s loss of power has grown commensurately with its expenditure on Democrats, anyway.

Like old dogs that cant learn new tricks, though, it is likely that they will double down and try to pump more money than ever into the pockets of pliant Democrats. Like a beaten wife they keep coming back, it seems.

For Nancy Pelosi It’s Lonely at the… Bottom

-By Warner Todd Huston

Politico has a sad tale to tell about former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (I just love that: former. Say it with me, FORMER House Speaker). The once powerful California Representative held a big one-year celebration of Obamacare to show off her keystone legislative victory and like the kid nobody likes, her invites to the party were ignored by all the top Democrats. Not just some of them, ALL of them!

This is a far cry from the power she wielded only months ago. Back in the old days when Pelosi sent out an invite to a press availability, like she did this week with her Obamacare celebration, the entire leadership would dutifully drop anything they were doing and they’d show up to Pelosi’s little show and they’d do it with bells on.

These days, not so much.

We Won Wisconsin – But the Fight Goes On

-By Warner Todd Huston

We may have won a small victory in Wisconsin with the brave work of Governor Scott Walker and his state’s Republican leadership but there is a greater battle looming. There is a bigger crisis coming for the states as the major troubles of pensions/unfunded liabilities/debts come to a head and the unions are pushing hard to force us all to pay them off instead of reform it all.

House Votes to Defund NPR

-By Warner Todd Huston

On Wednesday morning the GOP led House of Representatives voted to end federal funding for National Public Radio. Saying it made good fiscal sense it is also safe to say that the GOP was catering to its base, a group that has been against funding for NPR for some time.

The bill passed in a 228-192 vote mostly along party lines and will prohibit local NPR stations from using federal funds as well as cut all current funding. This eliminates almost $5 million in federal funding that NPR receives. The bill would not prevent the use of federal funds for producing programs by private firms and individuals…

VIDEO: We Need Less Talk, More Action From President on Debt

Here is the latest video shown to Republican senators on Tuesday. It highlights how our enormous national debt is one of the greatest threats facing our country and highlights the need for swift, serious action to address it. Republicans are urging the president to match his actions to his rhetoric and work with Republicans to develop long-term solutions to our nation’s debt crisis.

Kinzinger Statement on Three-Week Continuing Resolution Vote

From the office of Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL, 11th District)…

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-11) today issued the following statement on the House passage of the three-week Continuing Resolution (CR) that will cut additional spending, while keeping the federal government running:

“Last November, the American people sent a clear message to Washington — cut spending. I came to Washington to do exactly that.

“House Republicans passed a long-term CR with $100 billion in cuts. The Senate rejected this proposal, refusing to side with the taxpayers to get our fiscal house in order – leaving Congress to pass a short-term CR with another $4 billion in cuts over two weeks. Today, we passed an additional $6 billion in cuts over the next three weeks. If the Senate passes this short-term CR, it will be a total of $10 billion in spending cuts. This achievement of permanently cutting $10 billion is a good start, but the cuts will not stop here.

Senate News: McConnell Introduces Amendment To Stop EPA’s Back-Door National Energy Tax

From the office of Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (KY)…

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell introduced an amendment Tuesday to the pending small business bill that would stop the Environmental Protection Agency’s back-door national energy tax from taking effect.

“Imposing a backdoor national energy tax through the EPA is a strange way to respond to rising gas prices,” McConnell said. “Fourteen million Americans are looking for work. Gas prices are approaching $4 a gallon. And the Obama administration wants unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats to impose new regulations that will destroy even more jobs – and drive gas prices even higher.”

Dueling Union Bills in DC

-By Warner Todd Huston

First Congressional Democrats offered a national forced unionzation bill, and now Republicans have countered by putting forth a national worker’s freedom bill. With the luck breaking against unions in Wisconsin and the issue in an uproar in Ohio and Indiana it is now surprise that Congress has come to loggerheads with the same issue.

On Tuesday eight Republicans introduced the National Right to Work Act. Senator Jim DeMint says that he hopes it will, “reduce workplace discrimination by protecting the free choice of individuals to form, join, or assist labor organizations, or to refrain from such activities.”

Unions are less than 8 percent of the work force at this point yet those states that have more union members than others are doing less well. DeMint says that having unions is part of the problem.

Denial: Obama Nat’l Sec. Advisor Says ‘Many Different Faiths’ Turn to Terrorism

-By Warner Todd Huston

What do they say about denial, that it isn’t just a river in Egypt? That old quip constantly is brought to mind as President Obama and his administration prove over and over again that they are in complete denial about the danger we are facing in radical Islam.

This time it is the woefully absurd claim made by Denis McDonough, Obama’s Deputy National Security Advisor, who said that members of many different religions “succumb to terrorist ideologies.” McDonough said this in an address given on March 6 at the Islamic ADAMS Center in Sterling, Virginia.

With his remarks at the headquarters of this Muslim organization, McDonough proved that he simply refuses to recognize reality concerning radical Islam and is even willing to minimize that threat by pretending that all religions contain “terrorists.”

CPAC 2011: Ron Paul’s Last Straw With YAF (Time for Paulies to Grow Up)

Ron Paul may have won the CPAC straw poll but he’s lost Young Americans for Freedom, a conservative, college Republican-style organization to which he used to belong. Just as the results of the straw poll were revealed YAF announced they were kicking Paul out of the organization.

This is a pretty big deal, too. If you aren’t aware, Paul served on YAF’s board of advisors for more than two decades, he’s commented positively about YAF on the floor of the House in the past, and was once awarded the Guardian of Freedom award, YAF’s top honor.

This break is a hard one, indeed, and it’s mostly over Paul’s simple-minded foreign policy ideas.

Union Boss Says Advocates for Spending Cuts are ‘Mentally Retarded’

-By Warner Todd Huston

In a perfect example of why unions are the biggest problem for government budget reform, John Gage, President of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), has just pronounced anyone that wants to cut the overly generous pay, benefits, and pensions of government employees are “mentally retarded.” This is the to-the-hilt fight that the unions will go to, not only to keep their cushy remuneration, but to enlarge it still more all on the backs of the working poor taxpayers that don’t have luxurious government jobs.

Gage made the statement during a Feb. 8 march on Washington, DC.

When people say well we just have to pay less in wages whether it’s private sector or public sector, I think they’re mentally retarded to say something like that.

Senate’s Repeal Healthcare Vote Failure Further Makes Lie to Term ‘Conservative Democrat’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Newly minted West Virginia Senator, Democrat Joe Manchin, ran for office denigrating Obama’s take over of our national healthcare system with his Obamacare law. Tonight he and other so-called “conservative Democrats” in the Senate got a chance to prove that they were, indeed, as conservative as they claimed to be by voting to repeal Obamacare. Not one of them made that vote, however.

In a vote strictly down party lines, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R, KY) repeal measure lost in a 51 to 47 vote. It needed a 60 vote super majority to pass.

McConnell did not likely expect his measure to pass, to be sure. His aim was meant at the very least to put everyone in the Senate on record as to where they stood on Obamacare. This isn’t the last word on the debate, either, as Republican Senator John Cornyn (Texas) vowed that this fight was not nearly over.

Within minutes after the vote, on the GOP’s Senate Twitter feed, Cornyn talked of the battle to come. “These are the first steps in a long road that will culminate in 2012 where we will continue to expose the flaws in this bill,” he said.

A Note on My Trip to Washington D.C.

Some of you are aware that I was in Washington D.C. on swear-in day for the 112th Congress. I spent Jan 5 running around to many Congressional Offices leaving info on the desks of congressional staffers and having meetings with folks in government.

But one thing is sure. Trying to get something done on swear-in day is almost impossible. With the hundreds of extra visitors, family members, media and tourists there to see their favorite member of Congress being sworn in, The Hill is a madhouse.

I met quite a few politicians, bloggers, and newsmen, of course. It was hectic enough that I did not get many photos, but here are the few I took of those I met:

Obama’s Attny Gen. Says Americans More Dangerous Than Al Qaeda

-By Warner Todd Huston

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder told ABC News that he has “sleepless nights” over his worry about domestic terrorists. He thinks that Americans, natural born are far more dangerous than foreign terrorists.

At some level he has a point, but the way he phrased the whole issue once again proves that neither he, nor his president by extension, really have any logical grasp of the evil we face in radical Islam. In fact, they are philosophically resistant to even see Islam as the enemy.

“It is one of the things that keeps me up at night,” Holder told ABC News. “You didn’t worry about this even two years ago — about individuals, about Americans, to the extent that we now do. And — that is of — of great concern.”

Surrender our Liberty for a Little Security?

-By Don Boys, Ph.D.

Now I know where all the perverts go after a short stint in prison or with ACORN: they work for the Federal Government, specifically for TSA. All sane people agree that safety must be a major concern in this day of Muslim terrorism, but the fools, fanatics, and fascists have taken control at various levels of government. A virus seems to have infected people in power: it results in a loss of common sense, self-respect, modesty, and gratitude for the privilege of working for the American people.

Just the thought of a stranger, even one with a badge, gun, and in uniform running his or her hands up a ladies’ dress (“until resistance is reached”) or grabbing a man’s genitals is indicative of the spiritual, mental, and political condition of the American public. Moreover, it is staggering that any sane person would defend such molestation of anyone especially helpless children.

Janet Napolitano (who has her job because of her support for Obama) says that we must put up with this “inconvenience” for the sake of safety, but that is outrageous. Moreover, it is not an inconvenience but a power grab by the U.S. Government. For a TSA supervisor to say that we have a choice not to fly is appalling, arrogant, and asinine. Americans have a right to travel (not a privilege) without being harassed, hassled, or humiliated by Federal thugs. Federal thugs need to be reminded that we pay their salaries, and they are not being paid to irritate, intimidate, and insult innocent people. That does not go with the badge, gun, and uniform.

A Hollywood-Like Casting Call for Obama’s Oct. ‘Townhall’ in D.C.?

What is this? Obama is sponsoring a Hollywood-like casting call for a “diverse” audience for his upcoming October 14 townhall to be held in D.C? But, I thought everyone loved The One and would fall all over themselves to turn out in droves for an Obammessiah “townhall”? Why do they have to resort to a manufactured casting call to fill his audience?

The ad appears in the casting call section of an entertainment jobs board called BackStage.com. There Obama and his handlers, agents, writers, re-inventors, and fantasy-stylists are asking for an audience of “diverse interests and political views.” And if you believe that last bit, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell ya!

Lefty Rally at Lincoln Memorial Gets Glad Handed By Old Media, But Event a Bust

-By Warner Todd Huston

**UPDATED WITH VIDEO of communist and socialist participants**
**UPDATED 10/03/10 PHOTO of rally from Wash. Memorial**

Naturally the Old Media is doing its level best to pump up the “One Nation” rally. The lefty protest is gathering in front of the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall in Washington D.C. today, Oct. 2. But despite the glowing reports by the media there is no denying the fact that few people have turned out for the anti-Tea Party event sponsored by some 400 of America’s most extreme left-wing organizations and their associates in uniondom.

Despite months of planning the event seems like a bust. Sponsored by dozens of unions and groups such as the Communist Party USA, various socialist organizations, Code Pink, the racist Latino group La Raza and other extremist groups, organizers hoped to energize the left just ahead of the midterm elections just one month away. But the numbers that have turned out — even with the streets full of union-sponsored buses — pale in comparison to the Glen Beck rally that many feel the lefties were trying to emulate.

This is a screenshot of the live Ustream video just as clearly showing that the crowd attending the ‘One Nation’ rally does not extend very far down the reflecting pool at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial.

Here is a shot that jut came out on Sunday showing the rally from the Washington Memorial showing how few there were compared to the Beck rally above.

Still, the Old Media is putting a sunny face on this debacle. The Washington Post, for instance, says that the One Nation rally is “energizing Liberals,” despite that few have turned out to participate.

Tearful Emanuel Leaves WH Job, Says Obama Leads in ‘Toughest Times’ in History?

-By Warner Todd Huston

In the worst kept secret in D.C., White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel officially left his post in a tearful press conference on the morning of Oct. 1.

Most of what Mr. Emanuel had to say was your normal, average, everyday puffery that a junior member of a team says when he is leaving his position. Emanuel’s thanks-for-the-memories address was all perfectly innocuous… except for one thing.

Early in his remarks Emanuel issued some hortatory for his boss, President Obama. “I want to thank you for being the toughest leader any country can ask for in the toughest times any country has ever faced,” Emanuel said.

Now, some may think that this is just glad-handing of the sort that one might expect of an underling leaving his beloved boss. But this is far more revealing than that.

Just think of what Emanuel said, here. He claimed that his president has led through the “toughest times any country has ever faced.” Tougher than the Revolution when we weren’t even sure we’d make it as a nation? Tougher than what Madison faced in the War of 1812 when the White House was nearly burnt to the ground? Tougher than the Civil War that Lincoln faced? Tougher than WWI, the Great Depression, WWII?

Leftwits Try to Top Beck With October Rally in D.C.

-By Warner Todd Huston

The leftists are trying to emulate both Glenn Beck and the Tea Party movement by having their own march on D.C. and it is coming in but a few days. They are claiming that “hundreds of thousands” of their extreme leftist compatriots will gather at the Lincoln Memorial on October 2 for a left-wing bacchanalia at our nation’s capitol.

They are calling it “One Nation Working Together,” and it is yet one more left-wing, extremist attempt to employ Orwellian language to name an event because, Lord knows, they don’t include the millions of conservative Americans in that “one nation” title!

Here is what they are saying of their poor attempt to emulate Beck:

News Anchorman Fired for Being Conservative?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Was Washington’s WJLA TV anchorman Doug McKelway fired because he dared appear too conservative to suit the station’s left-wing news director and general manager? It sure is hard to escape that conclusion after reviewing the incident, in any case.

McKelway had a run-in with general manager Bill Lord last month that resulted in his being fired for “insubordination.” At issue was a July piece on the BP oil spill disaster in which the anchor seemed to go against the station’s liberal grain.

McKelway was sent for a stand up report near where a small protest against “dirty oil money” was held at Capitol Hill, Washington D.C. The anchor rightly pointed out that the protest was small and was peopled by little else but a group of far left fringies that are, as McKelway said, “largely representing far-left environmental groups.” The anchor went on to say that this might be a “risky strategy” because the one politician that took more BP Oil money than “anyone in history” is President Barack Obama himself.

Apparently that was all left-wing station manager Bill Lord could take and it wasn’t long before McKelway was called on the carpet for his truthful portrayal of the tiny protest. The result was that McKelway officially “resigned,” but GM Bill Lord is still claiming that McKelway was fired because of “insubordination” and “misconduct.”
