Slate: Proving Once Again Why Leftists Don’t ‘Get’ Radical Islam

… and Why Liberals are Our Weak Spot

-By Warner Todd Huston

For the online, left-wing magazine Slate, William Saletan thinks he’s found something that will damage Osama bin Ladden’s reputation in the Islamic world. But what he thinks is such a big deal proves that he doesn’t understand radical Islam or even the Muslim world. Worse, it proves why liberals are our soft spot and why they could be the death of us.

Saletan is all excited over the fact that the U.S. found a large cache of pornography in bin Ladden’s living quarters. This, Saleton is happy to say, will undermine bin Ladden’s reputation as a strictly holy man. This hurts bin Ladden, says Saleton, because, “they’re more upset by porn and hiding behind women than by suicide bombing”

Saleton contends that in our fight against bin Ladden, we’ve found the right “argument” to level against our opponent.

Why is porn such a big idea?

Christians Barred By NYPD From Muslim/ANSWER Sponsored Anti-War Rally

-By Warner Todd Huston

Two Christians were told by Police that they were not allowed to attend an anti-war rally held by a conglomerate of Muslims groups, unions, and Barack Obama’s Organizing for America organization on April 9 in New York City.

About 1,000 people came together at Union Square on Saturday to protest the U.S. military at a rally sponsored by the group Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (ANSWER).

James Simpson reports, though, that two Christians were removed from the scene by police because the jackboots claimed that they were “disturbing people.”

According to a counterprotester on the scene, “Besides the sea of them, there were two Christians peacefully preaching about how Jesus died for our sins, and the police told them to leave because they were “disturbing people.”

This event was co-sponsored by the usual, anti-American suspects, of course. A group calling itself the Muslim Peace Coalition USA was one of the sponsors. So was the Islamic Circle of North America. As well as a host of radical, anti-American groups many with ties to The Worker’s World Party socialists.

As Simpson notes, this rally got much favorable TV time in Iran and acted to assist that murderous regime with it’s anti-American propaganda. It’s great that they could aid and abet our enemies, isn’t it?

Armstrong Williams Duped By Egyptian Hooligans

-By Frederick Meekins

Of the tumult in Egypt, columnist Armstrong Williams posted that America should not be afraid of Egypt’s emerging democracy that “will be different from America’s political system.”

Williams comes to this conclusion because, “Egypt is a Muslim country…It is only natural that their…government will take on characteristics unique to its culture.”

So basically, this alleged conservative is excusing ahead of time the violent persecution of Christians that will likely erupt and the mass slaughter of dissidents that often takes place in Islamic societies undergoing revolutionary upheaval.

It’s All Hillary’s Fault

-By Nancy Morgan

The New York Times is reporting that the mixed messages received from the White House on the Egyptian crisis were the fault of the State Department:

A president who himself is often torn between idealism and pragmatism was navigating the counsel of a traditional foreign policy establishment led by Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Biden and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, against that of a next-generation White House staff who worried that the American preoccupation with stability could put a historic president on the wrong side of history.

Translation: It’s all Hillary’s fault that Obama is now being criticized for his lack of leadership during the 18 days of protests in Egypt that finally resulted in the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak.

Democrazy: Egypt and the Eternal Constitution

-By Selwyn Duke

A little less than a century ago, the West entertained the notion that WWI would be “the war to end all wars.” Insofar as this was seriousness and not just selling point, it was naiveté. Obviously, a military solution cannot solve a moral problem – nor can it change man’s nature. And while we should realize this today, we now fall victim to another flight of fancy. This is the idea that a political solution can solve a moral problem.

As with the “nation-building” efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq, the unrest in Egypt has placed the issue of political change front and center. While longtime American ally Hosni Mubarak no longer clings to power, some Americans risk Iranian revolution redux as they continue to cling to a dream. Thoroughly democrazy, they believe that democracy, a means to an end, is the end itself; they sometimes even behave as if it’s a cure-all. For example, I’ve actually heard liberals say, “You conservatives are hypocritical; you only believe in democracy until it yields an outcome you don’t like. If the Egyptian people vote for the Muslim Brotherhood, we have to accept it.” Ah, what principle.

What consistency.

What bunk.

Islam and the Prospect of World War Three

-By Alan Caruba

“I against my brother, I and my brother against our cousin. I, my brother and our cousin against the neighbors. All of us against the foreigner.”
– Bedouin proverb

Almost from its beginning, Islam has been a religion divided by warring camps. The tragedy of Islam is that Muslims are far more likely to die at the hands of their co-religionists than by those outside their faith. All religions have their sects and divisions, but Islam’s history is particularly defined by the violence that began shortly after the death of its founder, Mohammed.

If the turmoil in Egypt is about freedom than recent history gives little evidence that Arabs have any talent for it. Iran is a prison-nation. Syria is ruled by the son of its former dictator. Hamas rules Gaza. Monarchies. Et cetera.

Closing The Suez Canal

-By Mark Mattingly

What happens to the United States if the Suez Canal closes? What happens if the Suez Canal comes under the control of an Egyptian government that is hostile to the USA and The West?

Instead of closing the Suez Canal, maybe they will just increase the cost of a transit of the canal to an exorbitant level. Maybe the number and type of transits will be limited.

Why should anyone in the US even care? We will be forced to care even if any of the above happens. The reason that we will care is that the cost of gasoline at the pump will increase, and it will increase A LOT.

Newsflash – Obama (Almost) Saves The World!

-By Nancy Morgan

According to media reports, President Obama (almost) resolved the spiraling Egyptian crisis in one “private message” to Hosni Mubarak. AP reports, “Mubarak Promise Comes After Private Obama Message.”

President Obama is firmly in charge and appears to finally be calling the shots. In a bold, presidential moment, Obama said Tuesday evening that he has told Mubarak that a transition to representative government “must begin now.”

For the millions of Americans who only watch CNN, it appears that our president has, once again, saved the day. Only problem is, it’s just not so.

Palin Gives Time A Few Minutes of Her Time About Its False ‘Reporting’

-By Warner Todd Huston

The media is so sure that only the worst about Palin could possibly be true that false stories, out right lies, and even comedy bits are constantly presented as actual news. Time Magazine is the latest to fall into that trap by reporting a satirical Internet posting about Sarah Palin as hard news. It all just goes to prove that Sarah Palin lives in the heads of the Old Media and it must be awfully cramped up there.

Last week on Time Mag’s Celebrity Newsfeed, Nick Carbone reported satire as fact only to make a “correction” days later. Carbone had fallen for a “tongue-in-cheek” Internet posting that joked that in an interview with Fox News personality Sean Hannity Palin said she wanted to deport Christina Aguilera for screwing up the National Anthem at the opening of the Superbowl.

Why Islam is Different and Dangerous

-By Alan Caruba

Imagine that every day of your life begins with a morning call to prayer from minarets around the city or village in which you live.

Imagine that you are required to pray five times throughout the day, every day.

Imagine that the law of the land is based on Sharia, taken from the Koran.

Imagine that you live in a nation where stoning women, beheading criminals, and other draconian, ancient punishments are deemed acceptable.

Imagine being Muslim and knowing that conversion from Islam is punishable by death.

The Middle East, The World, at a Crossroads

-By Frank Salvato

In 2008, former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, was quoted as saying, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.” As stunningly opportunistic as that statement was to many, it was, at least, a transparently honest statement that defined the tactics used by the White House during the first two years of the Obama Administration. And while those of us who are politically aware here in the United States came to see that tactic bring to fruition a sea-change of initiatives, our political and ideological trials and tribulations pale in comparison to what is happening in the Middle East today.

I bring up Mr. Emanuel’s admission regarding crisis because it is cogent to the events happening in Tunisia, Jordan and, especially, Egypt. With pro-democracy and anti-dictatorial movements taking to the streets in protest of what they see as heavy-handed totalitarianism – albeit to a much lesser extent in Jordan than in the other locales, the world is witnessing a level of chaos that can only exist where there is a void in national cohesion; a void of accepted leadership. It is this void that serves as the opportunity for nefarious forces to exploit the “crisis.”

Perhaps most notably in Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood is calculating its actions carefully; waiting in the wings but for their call to take to the streets in support of the protesters. The Muslim Brotherhood, one of the quintessential organizations within the realm of radical Islam, was the organization that gave birth to al Qaeda. In fact, al Qaeda’s number two, Ayman al Zawahiri, was a high-level member of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood before embarking on a reign of terror, murder and oppression with Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda.

Obama’s 3 am Moment

-By Nancy Morgan

One of the issues raised in the run-up to our last presidential election was the question “Which candidate is best qualified to handle a ‘3 am moment’?” America now has a partial answer. It isn’t President Obama.

Last Friday was Day 4 of the ongoing protests in Egypt, where tens of thousands Egyptians took to the streets to demand the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak. As the situation reached a flash point, with a mounting death toll and Egyptian tanks in the streets of Cairo, President Obama maintained his silence. Well, not quite. He did Twitter, by proxy.

Around noon Friday, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs issued a 22 word statement on Twitter: ” Very concerned about violence in Egypt – government must respect the rights of the Egyptian people & turn on social networking and internet”. The White House also informed the media that Obama had received a 40 minute briefing on the situation. Phew!

The Next Iran

-By Dan Scott

The chaos in Egypt as presented by the MSM is one of an oppressed population fed up with years of totalitarian rule using the Internet to spontaneously cry for their freedom. The MSM from the beginning has been characterizing President Barack Obama as the one calling for peace, reason and restraint from the demonstrators and the Egyptian government. The MSM for it’s part is playing the Egyptian government’s efforts to protect itself and calm civil unrest as the efforts of an oppressive government attempting to crush the people’s aspiration for freedom.

As usual, the MSM doesn’t tell the facts that aren’t convenient to the narrative. Chris Matthews curiously began dissembling for the Obama Administration by claiming that this unrest was all George W Bush’s fault. Now why would Chris Matthews claim it’s Bush’s fault when he’s been out of office for two full years? Why indeed? Could it be that he knows full well that the Obama Administration since taking office has worked with opponents of Egypt’s lawful government and instead instigated this uprising? By making the ridiculous charge that it was George W Bush’s fault, Chris Matthews is attempting to create the moral equivalence of absurdity to cover for Barack Obama when it is finally exposed that he was the one who helped destabilize the government of Egypt. That’s right, the Obama Administration has been interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign country that is our ally.

Waiting and Watching Egypt

-By Alan Caruba

It took several weeks for word of the British defeat at Yorktown to reach the king and parliament. Not long after the end of the American Revolution, the government led by George Washington dispatched diplomats to London to negotiate a trade treaty.

Today we watch events unfold in far off places often in real time. What we lack, however, is context. Most Americans and, I suspect, others in Western nations are frequently at a loss when it comes to knowing anything about the culture and history, past and recent, of nations in the Middle East, Africa, or Asia.

What we do know about the Middle East is that, since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran along with the rise of al Qaeda and other jihadist organizations, things have not gone well for American and Western interests.

Losing Egypt

-By Alan Caruba

Those of us around at the time of the 1979 Iranian student revolution that deposed the shah are having strong feelings of déjà vu because that uprising was swiftly co-opted by Ayatollah Khomeini who hated the Great Satan, America, as much as he hated the Little Satan, Israel.

The U.S. lost a major ally in the Middle East. The Shah may have been a bastard, but he was our bastard. The CIA had put him on the Peacock Throne.

The uprising in Egypt, if taken over by the Muslim Brotherhood, will severely endanger American interests that have largely been coasting along in the belief that Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak would engineer a smooth transition of power to his son. This was the scenario in Syria when its dictator, Hafiz al-Assad, passed away.

That scenario just went out the window. Given the depth of opposition to Mubarak, it is unlikely power would pass to his son, Jamal who, with his wife and daughter have fled to Great Britain. Moreover, since Mubarak has no vice president, there is a major power vacuum.

Movie Review: Newt Gingrich’s America At Risk

-By Warner Todd Huston

In Washington D.C. on Sept. 12 I attended the star studded premiere of the new film America at Risk: The War With No Name, featuring Newt and Callista Gingrich and a dozen well respected experts on the subject of the War on Terror. The event was held at the Newseum, a block or so from the National Mall.

America At Risk clearly reveals the dangers that radical Islam still presents to American security and safety. We are still at war with radical Islam and it is a war we are at best treading water on and at worst actually losing. The biggest problem, according to the film, is our current president. Obama refuses even to recognize that we are at war and is constantly undermining our past efforts and leaving us open for future attack.

In fact, the movie makes a strong case that the U.S.A. doesn’t even have a serious global strategy to fight radical Islam and that the only reason we haven’t had a new major attack is because we’ve been lucky more than we’ve been good at preventing them. The film says that it isn’t a matter of “if” we get hit again, but when.

A Brief History of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict

-By Nancy Salvato

It was around 1400 B.C., when Moses led the Hebrew slaves out of Egypt into Palestine, the “promised land”. After the Romans destroyed Jerusalem in 70 A.D., the Jewish state came to an end and the Hebrew (Jewish) people were dispersed. In the 1890’s, Jews driven by Zionism to establish a modern Jewish nation-state and flocking back to their ancient biblical homeland in British controlled Palestine, eventually became embroiled in a modern day conflict between themselves and Palestinian Arabs.

During WWI, British Foreign Secretary Lord Balfour issued the Balfour Declaration; Britain would view establishing a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine, favorably. Thus, Palestine was carved into “Emirate of Transjordan” (later simply “Jordan”); the area east of the Jordan River, where Britain installed a Saudi Arabian Bedouin tribal chieftain, Abdullah ibn Hussein, to rule over Bedouin and Palestinian Arabs, and the western half; between the Mediterranean Sea and Jordan River, where Palestinian Arabs and Zionist Jews wrestled for control.

Britain handed responsibility over the western half of Palestine to the United Nations; which partitioned it into two states, one for the Jews; which would consist of the Negev Desert, the coastal plain between Tel Aviv and Haifa, and parts of the northern Galilee, and the other for the Palestinian Arabs; which would consist primarily of the West Bank of Jordan, the Gaza District, Jaffa, and the Arab sectors of the Galilee. Jerusalem would stay under UN control. Led by David Ben-Gurion, Zionists accepted this partition plan while Palestinian Arabs and surrounding Arab states rejected the proposal.
