Obama Unhappy Global Warming Was Missed at Debates

-By Warner Todd Huston

Obama has for the most part stayed away from the subject of global warming during his campaign for re-election. The President has only infrequently broached the subject on the campaign trail, but on Friday, October 26, in an interview with MTV, Obama delved into climate change more than at any other time to date during the campaign.

The President told MTV that he was “surprised” that global warming didn’t come up during the debates and warned that “we’re not moving as fast as we need to” in order to head off the problems he perceives will soon befall the planet.

Obama said global warming is a “critical issue” and that the subject presents a “huge contrast” between himself and GOP nominee Mitt Romney. “I am surprised it didn’t come up in one of the debates,” the President said.

As The Hill notes, however, even as the President assured the MTV audience that he felt the issue was important and that he wanted to talk about the subject during the debates, he never took the time to mention the issue himself during his encounters with Romney.

Looking Back: Jobs Down, Poverty Up Over Last Four Years‏

From the office of Rep. Peter Roskam (R, Illinois 6th District)…

This week, I’d like to share a chart with you that details the national decline in employment and prosperity the United States has experienced since 2008. In the last four years, the number of Americans out of work, living in poverty, and receiving food stamps has grown at an alarming rate.

The numbers are stark: the policies of the last four years have not worked, but the good news is this does not have to be the “new normal.” The House has passed multiple bills to create an environment where small businesses can grow and hire, and our economy can get back on track.

FactCheck.org: Obama’s False Jobs Creation Claims

-By Warner Todd Huston

President Obama has lately been touting the amazing claim that he’s created 5.2 million new jobs as President. His fantastic claim is featured in a new TV. But FactCheck.org says, not so fast. Those claims are “inflated,” to say the least.

FactCheck notes that the 5.2 million claim is accurate, such as it is. But what makes it “inflated” is that the jobs number refers only to jobs created after 2010 and does not include the 4.3 million that were lost earlier in Obama’s term.

Further, according to FactCheck, Obama’s number counts only private-sector jobs and does not include the “continuing losses” of jobs in the government sector as state and local jurisdictions find their budgets so over spent that pink slips have resulted.

FactCheck goes on to note that far from an actual gain of 5.2 million, once earlier losses are removed, Obama has in fact only realized some 967,000 jobs which includes a credit of 453,000 private-sector jobs which will be added through the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) benchmarking process.

Ohio: Sen. Sherrod Brown is Stifling Big Government’s Best Friend

-By Warner Todd Huston

Hey, Ohio, Senator Sherrod Brown is just not working. He’s one of the most extreme, left-wing Senators in Washington and his constant rubber stamping of Obama’s worst, big government boondoggles is hurting the Buckeye State’s economy, not to mention the country.

I have to say, that ad is pretty funny.

Senator Brown has been awarded the dubious distinction of being the most liberal Senator in the nation. Even the left-leaning National Journal said that Brown is on a “liberal crusade.”

Magnum TI and the Case of Illinois’ Fiscal Crisis

It’s been a tough year, 2012. This state economy is in the tank. It’s got something to do with that income tax hike from a year ago: 67%. A ball and a chain for a guy like me. The boys in Springfield said it’d be temporary, that it’d expire in 2015, but I’m betting otherwise—they need taxpayers to bankroll their gold plated pensions.

It’s a hell of a gig, these pensions. The cats meow. Put in your due as a public servant and you’re retired early, living on easy street. Meanwhile, I just had to lay off my secretary Susie. It’s too bad, she does good work. But we can’t all put it on taxpayer tab, keep kicking the can down the road. And that’s all you’re gonna get from Springfield: a bait and switch, smoke and mirrors. You want real solutions? Voters better make some changes this November, starting with the big cheese at top: Speaker of the House Mike Madigan.

He’s been Speaker for three decades, he’s got more power than Mike Tyson’s left hook. The income tax hike, pension policy—nothing gets passed him without his 10-4. And voters have taken notice. Now, I’ve looked at it two ways to Tuesday and there’s no chance in voting the big cheese out of office. But listen up, if we knock out enough Springfield Democrats—six by my count—he’ll lose his leadership role and he’ll no longer be speaking for you and me. Sounds pretty nice, eh? Just remember, vote out the Springfield Democrats and this case will be closed.

MITT ROMNEY: “There are two very different paths the country can take. One is a path represented by the President, which, at the end of four years, would mean we’d have $20 trillion in debt, heading towards Greece. I’ll get us on track to a balanced budget. The President’s path will mean continuing declining in take-home pay. I want to make sure our take-home pay turns around and starts to grow. The President’s path means 20 million people out of work struggling for a good job. I’ll get people back to work with 12 million new jobs. I’m going to make sure that we get people off of food stamps not by cutting the program but by getting them good jobs. America’s going to come back. And for that to happen, we’re going to have to have a president who can work across the aisle.”

Softening The Blow: NPR Edits Word ‘Tax’ Out of Democrat Debate Performance

-By Warner Todd Huston

Voters do not like taxes. So, National Public Radio in New Hampshire seems to have thought it would be nice to help Maggie Hassan, the Democrat candidate for Governor, by doing a little editing work to take the word “tax” out of one of her answers at a recent candidates debate. The radio folks claimed it was a “mistake,” but eliminating the word sure does tend to soften the blow of her policy ideas.

The September 19 debate featured Republican candidate Ovide Lamontagne and Democrat candidate Maggie Hassan both vying to take the seat being vacated by sitting Governor John Lynch. The edited remark concerns Hassan’s answer to a question about a state program called the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), another left-wing cap and trade-style boondoggle.

In the actual debate, Lamontagne and Hassan were asked if they would keep the RGGI program. Unsurprisingly, the Republican said no, he’d put an end to it. Just as unsurprisingly, Hassan, the Democrat, said she’d keep it. (My bold for emphasis)

I was proud to be a sponsor of that tax, eh, the energy efficiency program because it has saved businesses millions and millions of dollars and created over 400 jobs.

Now this is exactly how Hassan answers in the video of the debate that Hew Hampshire NPR posted.

NH NPR, however, decided to replay the audio of the debate several more times after the September 19 event. In so doing, the taxpayer-supported radio folks did some selective editing to the program in order to get it down to more air-able timing.

Biden Lies Saying Planned Parenthood Can’t Legally Perform Abortions

-By Warner Todd Huston

Vice President Joe Biden has done it again, unleashed an outright lie on the campaign trail. This time Joe told an audience at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse that the abortion provider Planned Parenthood was prevented by law to perform abortions. And yet, Planned Parenthood itself has claimed it committed 985,731 abortions in just the last three years alone.

In front of that crowd, Biden said, “And now these guys pledge that they are going to defund Planned Parenthood, which under law cannot perform any abortion” The fact is, though, Biden simply lied (again).

There is no law at all that prevents Planned Parenthood from committing abortions whenever and whereever it likes.

Now, there is a law that prevents PP from using any of the 66 million dollars a year in federal tax money that Democrat politicians hand over to it, granted. The law states that the federal subsidies cannot be used for abortions.

National Journal Gets Romney Cap Gains Cut Wrong

-By Warner Todd Huston

On October 10, the National Journal slammed Mitt Romney for “favoring the wealthy” with his capital gains tax cut plan. The plan, NJ claims, won’t help middle-income Americans because they “don’t have investment income.” But, apparently Nat’l Journal didn’t bother to look at Romney’s actual plan because their assessment is simply wrong.

Reporting on a Romney rally in Ohio, Nat’l Journal claimed that Romney’s tax plan is one-sided.

But Romney’s proposal as he described it — eliminating tax on interest, dividends, and capital gains — would largely help those living on investment income, which does not include many people in the middle class. The tax break would likely help senior citizens, however, many of whom do live on investment income.

…The wealthy are the major beneficiaries of low taxes on capital gains, dividends, and interest; many middle-income Americans don’t have investment income.

Apparently Nat’l Journal isn’t big on doing its research. The fact is, Romney isn’t proposing lowering capital gains taxes on “the rich.”

Book: Top 10% in US Pay 45% of Federal Taxes, More Than European Counterparts

-By Warner Todd Huston

Why does anyone imagine that “the rich” don’t “pay their fair share” of federal taxes in the U.S.? Stephen Moore, sure doesn’t and he proves it in his new book, Who’s The Fairest of Them All: The Truth about Opportunity, Taxes and Wealth in America.

While doing research for his book, for instance, Moore discovered that a mere 10 percent of Americans pay nearly half the federal taxes in this country.

With this fact at hand, Moore elaborated further in a recent interview saying that there is “no case on economic grounds” to vote for President Barack Obama, a candidate whose main “solution” to our economic woes is to raise taxes only on the wealthy.

Illinois’ Quinn Gets ‘F’ in U.S. Governors Fiscal Report Card

-By Warner Todd Huston

Illinois ranks at the bottom of the nation in nearly every single category of rankings of successful states and now the Land of Lincoln can rack up yet another great failure. Illinois’ Governor, Pat Quinn, has received the grade of “F” in a new “fiscal report card” of the 50 states’ fiscal health.

Congratulations once again, Illinois. Your almost unbroken record of failure goes practically unchallenged. You are pretty much the worst of the worst in all of the country.

Oh, happy days.

So, once again Illinois rates at the bottom of the pile with a governor that gets a well-deserved failing grade. This time joined Quinn is joined at the bottom by four other guvs. Chris Gregoire (Washington State), Neil Abercrombie (Hawaii), Mark Dayton (Minnesota), and Dan Malloy (Connecticut), each received the grade of “F” for their monumental failure as their state’s chief executive.

Economist Says Obama Misrepresented his Study on Romney Tax Plan

-By Warner Todd Huston

Princeton economics professor Harvey Rosen wants everyone to know that he didn’t say what Obama’s reelection campaign is claiming he said about Mitt Romney’s tax plan, namely that it would necessarily raise taxes on the middle class.

On the evening of October 7, team Obama mass emailed another one of its ever present campaign press releases and the topic du jour was how Mitt Romney’s plan will raise taxes on the middle class.

“Even the studies that Romney has cited to claim his plan adds up still show he would need to raise middle-class taxes,” the press release said. “In fact, Harvard economist Martin Feldstein and Princeton economist Harvey Rosen both concede that paying for Romney’s tax cuts would require large tax increases on families making between $100,000 and $200,000.”

The Desolate Wasteland of Post-Apocalyptic Television

-By Warner Todd Huston

Many TV critics and commentators like to say that you can judge the way this nation is feeling about itself and its times by looking at the sort of shows that are playing on television. They say that our mood and our outlook about our present and our future can be understood through the collective programming on the TV.

Well, a look at some of the popular shows now playing or those about to debut on the boob tube might make you wonder if TV has noticed that the country ain’t feeling so great? In fact, it’s downright post-apocalyptic.

That’s right, we’ve gone from 2008 and hope-n-chngiesness to the depths of post-apocalyptic cynicism.

Woman Objects to Obama Campaign’s Misuse of Her

-By Warner Todd Huston

Lisa Morrison of Fulton, Iowa is not very happy with the Obama campaign’s “misrepresentation” of her in a campaign statement. “I am outraged that my question is being misrepresented and used as a political tool against the Romney/Ryan campaign by both media and the Obama camp,” Morrison wrote to the Quad-City Times.

Obama attempted to claim that Mrs. Morrison attacked Paul Ryan at an Iowa campaign stop on Friday. But she says that wasn’t the case at all

“I was not calling Ryan out,” she insisted referring to the Obama campaign’s characterization of her question.

On October 5, Paul Ryan appeared at a campaign rally in Clinton, Iowa where Morrison called on him to explain a bit more about his plan for the nation should he and Romney be elected in November.

As soon as the event was over the Obama campaign highlighted Morrison’s question to Ryan and characterized it as an antagonistic confrontation. An Obama campaign statement was issued saying that Ryan, “can’t attend his own campaign rallies without being called out for failing to provide specifics about what Mitt Romney would do if elected.”

Morrison, however, vigorously disputes that portrayal of her question. In fact, she says she is a hearty supporter of Romney/Ryan.

Debate Dissembling: Obama’s Own Budget Proves His Deficit Reduction Claims Wrong

-By Warner Todd Huston

As political pundits delve into Obama’s very poor debate performance, not as much attention is being bestowed upon what he actually said on Wednesday evening. In the case of his claims about his budget, few are noticing that the President repeated his thoroughly debunked deficit reduction claims, claims even his own budget plan proves to be false.

During Wednesday’s debate, the President again told the American people that he has a $4 trillion deficit reduction plan that cuts $2.50 for every $1.00 in new revenue. “I’ve put forward a specific $4 trillion deficit-reduction plan,” he said before urging people to go to his website. “You can look at all the numbers, what cuts we make and what revenue we raise.”

The President has made this claim over and over again, but few that agree he is truthfully laying out his plan.

Certainly Republicans have pointed out the fallacies in Obama’s claimed deficit reduction plan. In a recent press release Senator Jeff Sessions (R, AL) said that Obama’s claims are “near-universally discredited.”

Crisis at the American Dinner Table‏

This mornings job numbers report is further proof that President Obama’s big-government agenda is failing Americans. This has been the most sluggish economic “recovery” in recent history. More Americans are unemployed under President Obama than there have been under the past 11 presidents combined. With a 7.8% unemployment rate, only 114,000 jobs were created in September. At this rate the Great Recession job gap won’t be closed until 2025. There are still over 12 million Americans unemployed today! With 4.8 million of those Americans having been unemployed for more than 27 weeks. For many, the American Dream is disappearing. Our economy is being stifled by the big spending and over-regulation of the Obama Administration’s policies.

All around the country, American families are suffering under policies that put the brakes on economic growth and leave millions jobless. Many American families are coming to grips with a crisis at the dinner table that is rarely expressed in statistics or campaign style rhetoric. That’s why AFP is launching a gripping new ad, called “The Dinner Table.”

If you are ready to fight back against Obama’s failing agenda and terrible economic policies, join Americans for Prosperity this Saturday for our 2nd National Prosperity Action Day. There will be 52 door-knocking events held in 16 states in an effort to educate American citizens on the failing economic policies Obama has implemented, and call on him to embrace policies that result in more economic freedom. This day of action will build on the incredible success of a similar event last week, when AFP activists made over 400 thousand calls at the 100+ phone bank locations using our state-of-the-art Freedom Phone technology. We hope you’ll join us for another great National Prosperity Action Day tomorrow!

After Slamming Palin, NY Times Excited for Up Coming Obama Death Panels

-By Warner Todd Huston

For The New York Times, Steven Ratner had to admit last month that he was pretty darned excited for those Obamacare death panels to get started. “WE need death panels,” he said on September 16. This from the same paper that in 2009 attacked Gov. Sarah Palin for her rhetoric and an Old Media establishment that gave Palin a “lie of the year” award for her claim that Obamacare death panels were coming.

The Times sudden appreciation of death panels isn’t the only bit of hypocrisy revealed in Ratner’s article. His very first paragraph wallows in rank hypocrisy.

Well, maybe not death panels, exactly, but unless we start allocating health care resources more prudently — rationing, by its proper name — the exploding cost of Medicare will swamp the federal budget.

So, not only is Ratner suddenly looking forward to the very death panels his paper mocked Palin for alerting us all to back in 2009, but he’s now openly admitting that the costs of Obamacare will skyrocket unless we start rationing care and telling some people they aren’t allowed to have health saving procedures!

Doesn’t this paragraph prove out what conservatives have been saying about Obamacare since day one? That there will be rationing, that some government agency will be deciding who will live and who will die, that the costs will be ruinous, and that the Democrat’s claims that “everyone will get care” is an outright lie — this is what we’ve been saying from the beginning.

Fact Checking False Claim Obama Budget Plan ‘Reduces Deficit by $5.3 Trillion in a Decade’

-By Warner Todd Huston

New York Times reporter Jackie Calmes recently made the outlandish claim that the President’s budget will reduce the deficit by $5.3 trillion over a ten-year period. But a closer look at this claim proves that it just isn’t true.

Don’t look behind that curtain!

Firstly, Obama and his surrogates don’t even claim a savings of $5.3 trillion, so it is a mystery where Calmes got this number. At the late Democrat convention, for instance, Bill Clinton claimed that Obama’s plan would save $4 trillion, not $5.3. But even Clinton’s mythical savings was deemed untrue by the Washington Post’s fact checker.

Worse, all those supposed savings in the Obama proposal is from tax hikes, not any actual cuts in spending. On top of that, most of the supposed savings are mere accounting gimmicks, not true savings.

If You Work for Government, You Deserve to be Fired

-By Warner Todd Huston

Yes, that title, If You Work for Government, You Deserve to be Fired, is meant literally. I really don’t care what you do for government I think you deserve to be fired.* In fact, I think that you need to be fired to save this republic. Not only do I want you fired, I want your pension negated. You don’t deserve one.

I’ll let that sink in a bit.

Of course, conservatives have the reputation of wanting to oust everyone in office and for wanting to “vote the scoundrels out.” But, I am not just wallowing in a trope, here. In fact, I’d like to add one more level to the throw-them-out-of-government concept. Let’s fire every government worker from the smallest village receptionist or sewer worker to the staffers of the highest Senator and every menial clerk and recalcitrant paper shuffler in between.

I am, here, indulging a little bombast, of course, but only a little. A very little.

It’s not just pique at the famous laziness of government workers I’m talking about. I’m also not only deploying that stereotype contending that the only reason government workers get their jobs is because they are pals with a politician — or another government worker, for that matter. It’s not just that they are better paid than just about any real American in the private sector — whether they deserve it or not — and it’s not because they are impossible to fire, nor is it because they get a better pension and health care than anyone who really contributes to society… well, OK, it is because of that stuff. All that stuff and more.

VIDEO: The Future Is Brighter With School Choice

This weekend’s release of Won’t Back Down has helped shine the spotlight on school choice. Heritage would like to keep it there, which is why we produced a short new video about the importance of parental choice in education.

Frustrated by the status quo and failing schools, more and more parents are demanding a choice for their children. That’s the plot of “Won’t Back Down,” which showcases how two committed parents take on the establishment. It’s based on actual events that stemmed from the parent-trigger law in California. The law allows parents to organize and, with the support of at least 50 percent, implement reform measures such as converting to a charter school or changing leadership.

>> Q&A: “Won’t Back Down” Producer Brings School Choice to Big Screen

With a cast of stars, including Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis, the movie has already prompted protests from union leaders like Randi Weingarten and opponents of school choice.

Education reformers appear to be winning. Last year was dubbed “The Year of School Choice” by the Wall Street Journal. More than a dozen states enacted school-choice legislation, empowering parents to choose a safe and effective education for their children. Heritage defines those choices as public, private, charter, online, and home school opportunities.

The video runs about two-and-a-half minutes. It was produced by Ben Howe of Mister Smith Media. For more videos from Heritage, subscribe to our YouTube channel.

Known Thug Alec Baldwin Claims U.S. ‘Will Never Be Great Again’ Under Romney

-By Warner Todd Huston

Alec Baldwin is warning the country. “America will never be great again under a Romney administration,” the volatile actor sonorously intoned in a recent, rambling Huffington Post screed.

If Mitt Romney is elected, Baldwin tells us, only “rich people” will find the country great. “Everyone else will be asked to dial down their [sic] expectations of what it means to be an American, again,” he warns.

It is clear that Mr. Baldwin isn’t paying attention to his fellow Americans because as a nation we are already lowering our expectations for the future. We are doing so right now, under Barack Obama.

Let’s see how Americans feel under Obama’s regime:

Chevy Volt Battery Plant Floundering Despite $151 Million from Obama

-By Warner Todd Huston

Another in a long list of Obama-touted and tax-supported “green energy” companies is on the verge of going out of business, this time in Michigan.

Two years ago, President Obama visited the LG Chem battery plant in Holland, Michigan. Obama then hailed the plant saying, “You are leading the way in showing how manufacturing jobs are coming right back here to the United States of America.”

But today, those LG Chem jobs Obama claimed were “coming back” are seeing intermittent layoffs instead of growth.

Media Blasts Ryan, Acts as if AARP is Non-Partisan

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last week the media was all over Paul Ryan’s visit to an event with the American Association for Retired People gleefully reporting that he was booed. The media treated the whole affair as if the AARP was some non-partisan organization. But, the truth is, the AARP is no more non-partisan than any organization carrying water for the Obama administration.

Take The Hill, for instance. In its report the inside Washington newser noted that the boos Ryan received was “a clear sign of just how big a challenge Medicare poses to the Romney campaign.”

This characterization is absurd. It presents the AARP as a venue that might not boo any proposal of the reform of an over taxed government program! AARP is solidly on the side of big government – it was a leading proponent of Obamacare — and will brook no truck with anyone talking of reforming anything. Of course they’ll boo Paul Ryan.
