Politco’s Full Court Press to Destroy Paul Ryan

-By Warner Todd Huston

Politico seems to have decided where it stands on Paul Ryan. On its main page on the afternoon of August 15, the news site seemed to carry a single message: Paul Ryan is a bad, bad man and Romney made a big mistake picking him as his wingman.

Ryan is slammed in a dozen stories on Politico’s main page. He’s either personally bad, reflects badly on Romney, or he makes his Party look bad. In fact, on this day there was only one sort of positive story about Paul Ryan that appears on Politico’s main page.

One story even ridicules him for having appeared too many times on the campaign trail dressed almost the same as Mitt Romney. Seriously. Politico is even now trying to attack Romney and Ryan over how they dress!

Here is a listing of the Ryan is bad stories:

  • How Ryan spurned deficit commission
  • Ryan no help to Romney with Hispanics
  • Romney’s VP pick lays out a road divided
  • Obama attacks Mitt-Ryan on Medicare
  • Tom Reynolds warns on Medicare (Ryan pick is bad for publicity)
  • Romney and Ryan: Fashion twins
  • Boehner tries to calm House GOP (Over Ryan’s budget ideas)
  • Beneath ‘Mediscare’ talk, who’s right?
  • Press restrictions on Ryan trail (whining about how bad Ryan’s aides are)
  • GOP pros fret over Ryan
  • Romney/ Ryan Medicare plan (Jay Leno slamming the GOP)
  • Obama hits Romney/Ryan on Medicare (Video)

And the Positive Ryan Stories:

  • Poll: Small post-Ryan bump for Mitt

On the purported positive story, note that the headline goes out of its way to call the polling bump “small” as if it is inconsequential? Yeah, we don’t want people excited that Romney/Ryan got a bump in the polls, do we?

So, Politico has decided. Paul Ryan brings nothing good to the ticket and there just isn’t a single thing out there to report that puts him in a positive light. Imagine that?

Long After Romney-Killed-My-Wife Ad, Politico Finally Ready to Compare Claims Of Romney and Obama?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Now that Mitt Romney has picked Paul Ryan for his running mate, Politico finds itself finally ready to compare the stump claims and campaign ads of the two campaigns. But instead of looking at gutter ads like Obama’s claiming Mitt Romney killed a steel worker’s wife, Politico thinks it’s better to compare ads and rhetoric focused on Medicare.

Calling it the “Mediscare” campaign, Politico’s piece is a long comparison of Obama’s and Romney’s claims of how each other would treat Medicare. This is certainly a useful discussion, to be sure, but where is Politico’s piece comparing Romney’s mild campaign thus far to the cynical, lie-filled attacks that Obama and Joe Biden as well as all their minions have launched at team Romney over the last few months?

Wouldn’t it have been useful to compare Romney’s issues-based campaign claims to Obama’s claiming that Romney killed a man’s wife or even this week’s claim from Biden who told an African American audience that Romney and Ryan want to bring back the black slave trade? (And worse, Biden even resorted to “black dialect” to do it!)

NBC Nightly News: Ignores Republican Delight About VP Pick, Says Ryan Got ‘Not So Warm Welcome’

-By Warner Todd Huston

On Tuesday’s broadcast of NBC’s Nightly News, anchor Brian Williams and reporter Peter Alexander made to look at Rep. Paul Ryan’s first few days on the hustings as Mitt Romney’s new VP pick. And what did they see? They didn’t see the almost universal praise by conservatives and Republicans alike, no, what they saw instead was a “not so warm welcome to the Big Leagues” for Paul Ryan.

There have thus far been few, substantive complaints about Paul Ryan from the GOP rank and file or from conservative leaders or conservative commentators. Ryan premiered to solid positive poll ratings, the first major poll featuring the VP pick sees Ryan at 50% approval, a very solid debut rating, and a past poll even found that Ryan is doing well with seniors — exactly the voters that Obama is trying to frighten to death with his obscene campaign rhetoric.

But praise and excitement for Ryan is not what NBC wants people to believe about the Paul Ryan pick. NBC wants people to fear Ryan, to feel he’s “controversial,” and unpopular.

Obama’s Iowa State Fair Visit Costs Small Businessman $25,000

-By Warner Todd Huston

It’s always nice to have a visit by a sitting president, I suppose, but these days security concerns are so overwhelming that it is often very uncomfortable for those residents and businessmen that live nearby and with Obama’s visit to the Iowa state Fair one small businessman ended up losing $25,000 in income as a result.

Small businessman Mike Cunningham runs the Bud Beer tent at the state fair but saw the Secret Service shut him down for several hours at a peak sales time when the President came to town.

The Bud Beer tent is known as the center of the evening festivities at the state fair but as Obama visited the fair, the beer tent was shut down to accommodate the needs of the Secret Service sent there to protect the President. Mr. Cunningham is a third generation owner of the tent which has been a fair staple for 65 years.

Zak is Back! TIME & CNN Reinstate Fareed Zakaria

-By Warner Todd Huston

Both TIME magazine and CNN have finished their internal review of Fareed Zakaria and have come to the conclusion that his plagiarism was an “isolated incident.” Hence, the Zak is back!

TIME announced that Zakaria’s obvious — and admitted — plagiarism was an “isolated incident” and that Zakaria did not mean to do the deed. It was an “unintentional error,” magazine execs decided.

“We look forward to having Fareed’s thoughtful and important voice back in the magazine with his next column in the issue that comes out on September 7,” Time said in a statement.

As for CNN, the news cabler concluded that they saw nothing that “merited continuing” Zakaria’s suspension.

“Zakaria has apologized for a journalistic lapse. CNN and Zakaria will work together to strengthen further the procedures for his show and blog,” CNN said. It said Zakaria’s public affairs program “GPS” will return on August 26.

So, all has been forgiven. Fareed Zakaria has escaped any prolonged or permanent damage to his career, unless you think plagiarism is a hanging offense unlikeTIME and CNN do.

An Open Letter to Toure of MSNBC

-By Warner Todd Huston

MSNBC’s Toure suggested that Mitt Romney was engaging in the “niggerization” of Obama. This ignorant, assinine , cretinous, stupidity from this race-baiting piece of crap drew a very thoughtful reply from conservative African American named Kira Davis from California.

Davis said that Toure’s comment made her “sick to my stomach” and she goes on to lambaste Toure’s race baiting and his “watering down” a term of hate.

“Toure says Romney’s tactics are the ‘niggerization’ of Obama. I take HUGE issue with that term and accusation, as someone with intimate knowledge of racism,” says Miss Davis.

This is the hatemongering that liberals like Toure and his liberal comrades engage in just to get votes for Democrats.

This is an eloquent and important video. Please watch it.

Raging Debate: Fareed Zakaria Is Innocent of Plagiaism… Or IS He?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last week, CNN and TIME Magazine correspondent Fareed Zakaria got in hot water for plagiarism by lifting a few paragraphs from another writer for one of his articles. Now the debate rages aout whether Zakaria is guilty or not despite his admission of guilt in the original instance (he officially apologized for the theft).

A second charge of plagiarism has been lodged against Zakaria this week, a charge that has tongues wagging and the pro-Zaks coming out in full force to defend their man.

Zakaria himself complained to the Washington Post’s Paul Farhi that it has become open season on one Fareed Zakaria. “People are piling on with every grudge or vendetta. The charge is totally bogus,” he said.

Family Research Council Shooting: Suddenly Media Not Ready to Blame Politics for a Mad Gunman’s Crimes

-By Warner Todd Huston

Curiously enough, the August 15 shooting of a security guard at the Washington HQ of the Family Research Council perpetrated by an unhinged gay rights activist didn’t spark the same hyperbolic claims from the Old Media establishment that politics is at the root of this violence, a claim that permeated reportage of past violence. No calls for investigations were made, no individual politicians were accused of fostering a “violent atmosphere,” and no particular ideology was blamed as the cause of this crime.

Quite unlike every recent shooting that happened before it, crimes that were immediately blamed on the evil, evil Tea Party, or conservatives, or even Rush Limbaugh, this shooting was treated in a subdued manner by Old Media and was practically ignored by the ignorati and talking heads of the lefty establishment.

The coverage was downright muted, for certain. It got so absurd that Jonah Goldberg had to come back from vacation to make a post at NRO’s The Corner to point out one of the most egregious headlines in the Old Media. It came from the Washington Post whose headline on iPad read, “Police: Suspect disagreed with Family Research Council.”

Heartbreak: Obama Disses White House Press Corps

-By Warner Todd Huston

The sycophantic press has once again been given the back of The One’s hand as the President took time out from his busy schedule of golf and fundraisers to give some interviews to the entertainment press, all the while ignoring the White House press corps with whom he hasn’t spoken in more than two months.

Several conservative voices have wondered why the President has been skipping the press for weeks now and finally someone in the world of “real” journalism has begun to carp about the lack of interaction with the President. After Obama took pufball interviews with Entertainment Tonight and People Magazine, ABC’s Jake Tapper could take it no more.

Tapper says the President is “dissing the White House press corps” even while taking non-confrontational interviews with the entertainment press and small local affiliates while on the campaign trail.

The last time Obama gave the WH press corps the opportunity to ask him some questions was when he took a grand total of six questions from them in June.

Paul Ryan: Most Talked About Pol on Facebook

-By Warner Todd Huston

CNN reported this week that Rep. Paul Ryan has become the king of Facebook by knocking President Obama off “the most talked about” list of US politicians.

CNN recently entered into a partnership with Facebook to track things political on the social sharing network and according to the new “Facebook-CNN Election Talk Meter,” in the 54 hours after presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney introduced Rep. Paul Ryan as his choice for the vice presidency, Paul Ryan became the star of social media.

Facebook-CNN talk meter scores

  1. Rep. Paul Ryan 5.21
  2. President Barack Obama 4.84
  3. Vice President Joe Biden 4.01
  4. Gov. Mitt Romney 3.74

In fact, Ryan became such a hot topic on social media that he almost matched Olympic swimming star Michael Phelps on the Talk Meter and that is pretty impressive considering how badly politics typically shows up on Internet “top” lists compared to pop culture and sports. As CNN measured it, in the days after he won all his most recent Olympic medals Phelps rated a 6.51 to Ryan’s 5.21 on the 1-10 scale.

NBC’s Lauer Knocks Down Obama Flack Stephanie Cutter With President’s Own Words

-By Warner Todd Huston

Obama flack Stephanie Cutter appeared on NBC’s Today for what she likely assumed would be a softball interview but got a few hardballs from host Matt Lauer instead when the morning talker used President Obama’s own words to slice Cutter down to size.

Cutter came on to act the attack dog for team Obama as one more flack out there trying to tear down Rep. Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney’s pick for Vice President.

Like so many of her fellows, Cutter refused to engage in any actual debate preferring instead to fearmonger, name call, and essentially lie about Ryan’s past policy proposals. But this time, NBC’s Lauer wouldn’t let Cutter just blather on without being pressed on the facts.

Lauer started the segment reminding Cutter that the President himself said that Paul Ryan was “absolutely sincere about wanting to reduce the deficit.” He went on to ask Cutter if the President still felt that Ryan was an honorable, serious Republican who sincerely wanted to offer solutions to America’s problems.

Instead of responding to the question, Cutter went into her rote attack on Ryan saying he isn’t “bold” because he didn’t “buck” his own party and that Ryan wanted to hurt the middle class by not asking “anything from the very wealthy.”

Reuters Goes After That ‘Wealthy’ Mormon Church

-By Warner Todd Huston

As the race for the White House heats up, Reuters suddenly realized that the massive Mormon Church has a lot of money in its bank accounts and sought to needle the Church saying if it were a business “wealthy adherents like Mitt Romney would count as its dominant revenue stream.”

Reuters took the if-it-were-a-business theme even farther in its opening paragraphs.

It would also likely attract corporate gadflies protesting a lack of transparency. They would call for less spending on real estate and more on charitable causes to improve membership growth — the Mormons’ return on investment.

Of course, a religion is not a “business” proposition. A religion does not operate like a company does. It has far different goals. But assessing a religion wasn’t Reuters’ goal, here. Making Mormons out to be “rich” elitists that act suspiciously and are pushing a snobbish presidential candidate on the nation was Reuters’ goal.

DNC Chair Wasserman Schultz Demolished by… CNN’s Wolf Blitzer?

-By Warner Todd Huston

The most unkind cut of all is when your paper thin understanding of the facts is shredded by someone you think is on your side. This is what happened to Democrat National Committee Chairperson Debbie Wasserman Schultz when she kept trying to tell CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that Ryan’s Medicare reform plan took Medicare away from everyone even though, as Blitzer repeatedly pointed out, the truth is that Ryan’s reforms only altered the entitlement for those 55 and younger.

It was painful to watch Schultz being eviscerated by her own CNN mouthpiece.

Of course Blitzer was correct. When Paul Ryan introduced his budget reform plan, the Roadmap For America’s Future, he did suggest that reforms for Medicare would kick in for those 55 and under. But thefact is, and it is a fact that Blitzer kept trying to pound into Wasserman Schultz’ head, that Every American over 55 would not see any changes at all in the entitlements that they always thought they’d get.

Assoc. Press: Stop Whining About Soc. Sec., America. It Isn’t as Expensive as Europe’s!

-By Warner Todd Huston

Social Security is as close to insolvency as you can get and not be completely belly up. Government watchdogs warn that Social Security will see a $7 trillion shortfall by 2086. But the Associated Press says, don’t worry about all that, America. Why, the Social Security system isn’t as bad as Europe’s public pension mess, so everything’s just fine. Move along. Nothing to see here.

In the article, AP sets about comparing Europe’s public pension systems to Social Security. In so doing AP is apparently trying to quell fears that Social Security is in crisis. Why, Europe’s is in worse shape, so Social Security is “downright frugal,” The AP says.

Not only is the AP apparently trying to make Americans forget all about the mess that our entitlements are in, but the venerable wire service goes on to note that Europe’s benefits are far more generous than our miserly Social Security.

AP points out that those lucky Europeans can retire earlier than Americans and also informs readers that this Nirvana was created by high taxes. See, Europe is better.

DNC Chair Says She Doesn’t Know if Obama’s Super PAC is a Democrat Group

-By Warner Todd Huston

Democrat National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a recent interview that she had “no idea” about the political affiliation of the super PAC that is endorsing Barack Obama. Asked if the group was a Democrat group, she feigned that she didn’t know whether or not they were Democrats despite that the front man for the group, Bill Burton, was once Obama’s White House Deputy Press Secretary.

Fox Host: Should the Democrats be releasing an ad that accuses a presidential candidate of being responsible — through inference — of being responsible for a woman’s death?

Debbie Wasserman Schultz: First of all, that’s a Priorities USA ad.

Host: I understand…

DWS: It’s not a Democratic ad, it’s a priorities USA Super PAC ad…

Host: Correct

DWS: … which we have nothing to do with it.

Host: Do you deny that they’re Democrats?

DWS: I have no idea of the political affiliation of the folks associated with that Super PAC.

Host: So, Bill Burton, who used to work in the White House, who worked for the Obama campaign in 2008? They are clearly Democrats?

DWS: That is a Super PAC ad, not affiliated with our campaign or with the party.

She doesn’t know? Come on. She has to know. She is either lying here or she really is a stupid as most people assume she is.

Buzzfeed Buries Story of Obama Supporter Punching Romney/Ryan Volunteer

-By Warner Todd Huston

Now, if you had a story about GOP veep candidate Paul Ryan’s first Iowa rally and an Obama supporter rushed the stage after punching a Romney/Ryan volunteer, would your headline read, “Ryan Heckled At First Solo Event“? Or would you maybe want to rather highlight the whole punching thing?

Well, to Buzzfeed’s Zeke Miller “heckling” is far more newsworthy than punching, I guess. In fact, it was so low on the list of important points that Buzzfeed threw it away a few paragraphs into the story, with a lone line, effectively giving it little notice.

It seems that some wild-eyed, violent Obama supporter rushed onto the stage upon which Ryan was speaking on August 13 and was snared by the police who were on hand as security. As she charged the stage, police are reported as having yelled, “She just punched a volunteer.”

One might think that an Obama supporter violent enough to punch people on the way to rushing the stage where an opponent of the President is speaking would be the focused aspect of this story of Ryan’s fist visit to Iowa. But, no, the headline goes for “hecklers” instead.

Barack Obama: Hey Media, Stop Reporting What The Other Side Says!

-By Warner Todd Huston

According to The New York Times, President Obama is a “voracious consumer of news.” But he’s not at all happy with a media that has been apparently engaged this whole time in a one-sided love affair with The One. He has harsh words for the media establishment.

Times writer Amy Chozick herself seemed quite star struck by the prez giving us paragraph after paragraph filled with evidence of how impressed she is with Obama’s reading habits and media interaction. But for the President, the feeling isn’t mutual.

You see he’s mad that the press keeps giving the other side so much coverage.

While Mr. Obama frequently criticizes the heated speech of cable news, he sees what he views as deeper problems in news outlets that strive for objectivity. In private meetings with columnists, he has talked about the concept of “false balance” — that reporters should not give equal weight to both sides of an argument when one side is factually incorrect. He frequently cites the coverage of health care and the stimulus package as examples, according to aides familiar with the meetings.

See? The Me-Myself-and-I President says that the press should just stop giving that “factually incorrect” side all that darn coverage. Only he is the right one, so that is all the press needs to report. There is no “other side” to an issue. Just Obama’s.

New York Times: Gosh, Remember Obama’s ‘Jaw-Dropping’ Crowds?

-By Warner Todd Huston

For The New York Times, reporter Jackie Calmes must have found Chris Matthews’ leg tingle as she penned a story dreamily reminiscing about Obama’s “jaw-dropping crowds” he used to garner at campaign stops back in 2007-08.

Calmes also wondered why Obama isn’t getting those great crowds anymore?

Oh, she was filled with all sorts of reasons to explain away Obama’s smaller crowd sizes, mind you. The most amusing one is her regurgitation of the campaign’s claims that Obama wants smaller crowds. Yes, Calmes says he meant to do that.

Still, she doesn’t think it matters that The One is drawing stadium-sized crowds these days. Why? Because Mitt Romney is a racist, naturally. When she turned to slash Mitt Romney, she describes his crowds saying, you guessed it, they are racists.

USA Today’s Olympic Fantasy of an All Female Country

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Olympics is usually a time of a country to express pride in its athletes, all its athletes. But not for USA Today. No, USA Today thought it would be interesting to imagine if our female athletes were “their own country.”

In its post Olympics coverage, USA Today wasn’t happy enough that America’s female Olympians were big winners in London. For USA Today, Kelly Whiteside went to fantasy land.

U.S. female athletes have done more than their fair share, winning 27 of the team’s 41 gold medals so far. To put that accomplishment in perspective: If the U.S. women were their own nation, they would be third in the gold medal count.

“I’ve been thrilled to see how well U.S. women have done,” said Kayla Harrison, a gold medalist in judo. “It feels amazing to be a part of something so much bigger than myself; I definitely feel connected. To be able to say I’m a strong confident young woman and an Olympic champion is amazing, and I hope we have a million young girls inspired right now.”

The same holds true for China, as women have won 20 of that country’s 37 gold medals.

We are in such a politically correct era that a major newspaper can’t be happy that a nation’s athletes, both its male and female athletes, did well at an international sporting event without separating the sexes.

Shouldn’t Jesse Jackson Jr. Have His Gun Rights Revoked by Ill. State Police?

-By Warner Todd Huston

We all know that Representative Jesse Jackson, Jr. is a huge anti-gun activist. It is also public knowledge in Illinois that he is a holder of an Illinois Firearms Owner ID (a FOID card). This state-issued ID that allows Illinois residents to legally purchase firearms and ammunition is supposed to be revoked for people that have been admitted to a mental health facility. So, will the state revoke Jackson’s FOID card?

Rep. Jackson was admitted to a mental health facility last month claiming “exhaustion” but it has since been learned he suffers from a more serious mental condition such as depression. His own wife said that he’s been “completely debilitated by depression.”

In fact, on August 13 it was reported that Jackson is suffering from a bipolar disorder.”

So, What DOES It Take to Get Fired By CNN, Fareed Zakaria?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Just before Mitt Romney’s pick of Wisc. Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate, CNN commentator Fareed Zakaria got himself in a spot o’ trouble when it was discovered that he had plagiarized a piece he wrote for TIME magazine. He also posted the same plagiarism at CNN.

As Friday wore on, CNN and TIME both went from “no comment” to suspending Zakaria, a journalist praised for his perspective on foreign policy. But why was he not fired outright? What does it take to get fired in the lefty media?

In any case, as we await Zakaria’s final journalistic fate this is a good time to remind readers of just how far left Zakaria is. As a journalist he’s always been a reliable left-winger and he is most especially known for his anti-Jewish sentiment.

Business Owner Wants Her Deli Removed from Obama Campaign Ad

-By Warner Todd Huston

The owner of Krause’s Deli in Cincinnati, Ohio is extremely upset with Barack Obama for showing the front of her business in one of his TV commercials. It is causing her to lose customers and she says she was lied to when the video of her shop was taken. Now she wants the video removed from Obama’s TV spot.

Krause’s Deli as it appears in the Obama ad

Debra Krause-McDonnell, owner and operator of Krause’s Deli, tells the Cincinnati Enquirer that she is most upset because she was not told that the video crew that appeared before her shop one morning earlier this year was filming for an Obama ad. Not only that but she says they lied saying they were filming for a business security gate company.

The small business owner told the media that after the ad began running in the Queen City some of her customers had told her they will no longer shop at her establishment because she has taken sides with Obama. If she had done this, though, she would likely be prepared to accept the consequences over her support for Obama. But the fact is she has not chosen sides.

Newsweek’s Asparagus Fail, Recycling Tired Cover Illustrations

-By Warner Todd Huston

In 2010, stereo equipment magnate Sidney Harmon bought Newsweek for $1. This year his surviving family members ended their support for the magazine. It may have been a good decision since Newsweek can’t even seem to keep its own cover image fresh and original as is witness with an August cover sporting an image and theme that has been used several times before on other magazines.

The August issue of Newsweek features the cover story “101 Best Places to Eat in the World,” and is illustrated with a close up of a pretty lady, head tilted back, and with asparagus spears dangling seductively toward her red, parted lips.

If that seems familiar, you may have caught a 2008 cover of Observer Food Monthly in Great Britain that featured the exact same image. Not just a similar one, but the exact same stock photo.

MSNBC’s Maddow Divines ‘Racism’ In Romney Ad

-By Warner Todd Huston

Rachel Maddow of MSNBC is sure that Mitt Romney’s recent campaign ad is “racist.” How does she know? Well, she can’t point to anything substantive that proves it, so she has to feel that it’s racist and since she feels it, it must be so.

The ad under Maddow’s cross-eyed microscope, titled “Right Choice,” speaks to Obama’s quiet and quasi illegal gutting of the welfare reform law that was signed into effect by Bill Clinton back in 1996.

Transcript

In 1996 President Clinton and a bipartisan Congress helped end welfare as we know it by requiring work for welfare. But on July 12, President Obama quietly announced a plan to gut welfare reform by dropping work requirements. Under Obama’s plan, you wouldn’t have to work and wouldn’t have to train for a job. They just send you your welfare check. And welfare to work goes back to being plain old welfare. Mitt Romney will restore the work requirement, because it works.

But to Maddow this is all “racism.” How is an ad that talks about the gutting of a law duly passed by Congress and signed by a Democrat President a “racist” ad? Well, it just, you know, like totally is and stuff.

Here is how, on her August 7 show, Maddow explained… or tried to explain, her racist feelings.

Big Three Networks Ignoring Lie-Filled Obama Ad Portraying Romney as Murderer

-By Warner Todd Huston

For two straight days, now, neither ABC, CBS, nor NBC have bothered to mention the roiling controversy over the lie-filled ad that Obama’s Super PAC put out intimating that Mitt Romney killed a steel worker’s wife. The ad is being called the nastiest, most misleading ad of this election cycle by newspapers, talk radio and even the cable news stations — CNN and MSNBC both, yet — but thus far the big three are ignoring the whole story.

Despite the growth of the Internet and cable news, more Americans still get their news from the three traditional TV networks and these organizations are run almost exclusively by liberals, so it isn’t too surprising that none of them seem willing to report the truth about this despicable Obama ad. It is, however, still a breach of their responsibilities not to report the news of the day.

The cable stations, on the other hand, have been eviscerating Bill Burton, the spokesman for Obama’s super PAC Priorities USA Action, over the obvious lies in his campaign ad.

Abandoned Newspaper Buildings Mirrors Decline in Industry

-By Warner Todd Huston

For the Minneapolis Post, columnist John Reinan has a very interesting piece noting that many once powerful city newspapers are being forced by industry loses to abandon their palatial, decades old headquarters buildings.

Many of these buildings are grand, often classically built, downtown mainstays that once told a city that the newspaper contained within was a vital part of a city’s life, but newspapers just can’t afford to run these huge places anymore. This, Reinan feels, is another symptom of an industry shrinking away to nothing.

Reinan looked around the country and found that many once big time daily newspapers have been forced to move to digs definitely less high-end. Among the many downscalers, he found the Oakland Tribune, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Philly Inquirer, the Philly Daily News, the Des Moines Register, the Indianapolis Star, and many more have left the buildings that were once known as centers of power and prestige only to seek refuge in lower rent buildings in a possible last ditch effort to remain viable.

White House Spokesman Disses Drudge Report

-By Warner Todd Huston

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney dismissed The Drudge Report, one of the most popular news aggregation websites on the net, as an unworthy source of news.

During the August 7 Press Briefing, Carney said “be mindful of your sources” when a reporter cited The Drudge Report as the basis for her question.

Carney didn’t just tell the reporter to “mind” her sources once, either. He did so twice.

The reporter prefaced her questions saying she saw on Drudge that President Obama himself was the source for the story that GOP candidate Mitt Romney was considering current CIA Director David Petraeus for his vice presidential pick.

After Carney warned the reporter to be mindful of sources and then replied, “I can say with absolute confidence, such an assertion has never been uttered by the president. And again be mindful of your sources.”

Lefty Attack: Paul Ryan is a Follower of Ayn Rand

-By Warner Todd Huston

It was only minutes after news broke that Paul Ryan was Romney’s likely pick for Vice President that leftwingers on Twitter began to needle Ryan as a follower of that mean ol’ Ayn Rand, the famed objectivist philosopher of the middle of last century most famous for writing Atlas Shrugged and for being a proponent of what the left says is a less than compassionate philosophy on humanity.

There is a mistaken belief on the left that Paul Ryan was somehow programmed by Ayn Rand and that his entire budget plan, his Roadmap For America’s Future, is somehow one great Randian, or worse Darwinian, exercise in the survival of the strongest. The left also chides him for later turning his back on Rand and pretending his ideas really aren’t driven by what they consider to be Ayn Rand’s mean-spirited philosophy.

Neither claim is true.
