Rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd Denounce Then Support The Confederate Flag

-By Warner Todd Huston

After forty some years of prominently featuring the Southern Cross flag of the old Confederacy as part of its schtick, suddenly the southern rock band Lynyrd Skynrd is denouncing the banner claiming it is a symbol of racism.

Sole surviving original band member, Gary Rossington, explained why the band was dumping its long-time use of the Southern Cross flag (often mistakenly called “The Stars and Bars”) in an interview with CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield in an episode of the cabler’s Face to Face entertainment segment.

It became such a issue, you know, about race and stuff, where, we just had it, in the beginning because we were southern and that was our image back in the 70s and late 60s because they kinda branded us from being from the south so we showed that.

But I think through the years, you know, people like the KKK and skinheads and people have kind of kidnapped the Dixie or Rebel flag from the southern tradition and the heritage of the soldiers, you know, that’s what it was about. And they kinda made it look bad in certain ways. So, we didn’t want that to go to our fans or show the image like we agreed with any of the race stuff or any of the bad things.

Bandmate Johnny Van Zant went on noting that they all grew up “loving the old Blues artists,” and other black musicians and they “just didn’t want to be associated with that particular (racist) thing.”

New Song, Video: Obama Gotta Go

LYRICS:

© 2012 Glen Shulfer Obama Gotta Go

I been trying not to say anything,
but I been waiting for the end of his fling.
And I can’t wait to hear the Fat Lady sing.

I’m so tired of all the money he spent.
And I wonder where the heck it all went.
But now we got to get a new president.

Glen Shulfer Video: Blame Someone Else

The latest from musician Glen Shulfer…

Lyrics
© 2012 Glen Shulfer
You blame someone else for what you’ve done.
You said it’s not your fault for leaving us undone.
Oh, but you promised everything…delivered nothing,
and blame someone else.

No, you can’t blame George Bush, cause it’s been four years ago.
And you can’t blame the Tea Party, when all they want is to end your debt.
And you can’t blame it on the rich; cause who the hell’s gonna pay your tax?
And you can’t blame the Military, because they keep this country strong.
We gotta take back America! Cause we’re at the tipping point.

You blame someone else for what you’ve done.
You said it’s not your fault for leaving us undone.
Oh, but you promised everything…delivered nothing,
and blame someone else.

No, you can’t blame America, and all the good that she stands for.
And you can’t blame it on the church, just because you don’t believe.
And you can’t blame Talk Radio, cause it’s the Freedom Voice we hear.
And you can’t blame the Constitution; it’s meant to stop someone like you!
We gotta take back America! Cause we’re at the tipping point.

You blame someone else for what you’ve done.
You said it’s not your fault for leaving us undone.
Oh, but you promised everything…delivered nothing,
and blame someone else.

New Rock Band, Madison Rising Shows Our Country Finally Heading Into The Right Direction?

News from the band Madison Rising…

Could a pro-American and openly conservative rock band charting in the top 100 on both iTunes and Amazon.com be a sign that our country is starting to move in the right direction? Maybe so, given the fact that Madison Rising, a phenomenal new band lead by a Navy veteran Dave Bray is climbing rock charts while promoting the principles of liberty, independence, smaller government and personal responsibility.

It used to be that younger people only listened to music about sex, drugs, rock n roll and rebellion. But Madison Rising is showing us that this demographic will in fact listen to music with a message if that music is good and worth listening to. By singing about topics such as media bias, taking action to create a better future for ourselves, the damage alleged “peace” protestors do, and actually supporting our military, the band gets everyone thinking instead of simply accepting what they hear or see from liberal media.

By sticking to their core principals, Madison Rising is well on their way to becoming a successful rock band like so many of their predecessors. The group recorded its debut album with a multi Grammy winning producer Ron Saint Germain (who worked with artists such as Creed, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Muse) and is receiving incredibly strong support from their fan base like so many other popular bands that seem to come out of nowhere to suddenly become a house hold name. The big difference is that Madison Rising is doing this while spreading a positive message and getting people to think about issues that matter while the other artists continue to focus on negativity, vulgarity, entitlements and self-congratulatory posturing, achieving nothing except continuing to add to what is wrong with popular culture today.

Dancing With The Haters: DWTS Slam on Tea Party

-By Warner Todd Huston

Even Dancing is not safe from left-wing attacks on Tea Partiers, sadly. Tonight on the venerable dance show, fashion makeover maven Carson Kressley thought it would be a hoot to make fun of over half the voters in America with an attack on how he thinks Tea Party activists smell.

On tonight’s Dancing With The Stars, funny guy Carson Kressley hit the screen wearing a gorilla mask. Taking it off he snarked, “It still smells like a Tea Party.”

So, what are we to make of this nonsense? Is Kressley saying that Tea Party activists smell like gorillas?

Are we supposed to be laughing at that, now?

So, what do Democrats smell like? Maybe Europeans? How about reds?

I wonder what dance partner Anna Trebunskaya, who was born in Russia, thinks about that? I wonder how ABC will take attacking so much of its audience?

Whatever Anna or ABC thinks of it the bigger questions is, what do you Tea Partiers think? Maybe you can ask ABC yourself?

Eleanor Mondale Passes, Aged 51

-By Warner Todd Huston

Eleanor Mondale, the precocious daughter of Vie President Walter Mondale, passed away at her home in Minnesota. Mondale, aged 51, had been diagnosed with brain cancer in 2005 and finally succumbed to the illness.

Mondale made a name for herself in radio and TV after her father’s failed 1984 run for the White House against Ronald Reagan. But she was also the talk of the town, if you will before she launched her entertainment career.

She was a known “party girl” and again became notorious after her fling with rocker Warren Zevon was revealed in a book by Zevon’s widow published in 2007.

Mondale had several parts in TV shows, became an entertainment reporter, and went on to become a successful radio personality in Minnesota. Her radio career touched Chicago briefly in 1986 when she did a stint on WGN-720 (AM)

She was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2005 but had thought that the cancer had gone a year later. But by 2008 the cancer that eventually took her life had returned.

Hollywood’s Next Rape Fantasy: 13-Year-Old Raped, Held As Sex Slave in New Film

-By Warner Todd Huston

It looks like Hollywood has not learned the lesson that a graphic rape of a teen girl is not the best recipe for box office sales as this year, yet another rape fantasy film has emerged from the muck and mire of Hollywood in the hopes to assault audiences everywhere.

You may remember back in 2007 when upcoming actress, then a 13-year-old Dakota Fanning, starred in Hounddog, a film in which her character was raped. When the film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, the rape scene elicited actual boos from the audience. Still, the scene was not explicit and the rape itself was not shown on film.

This time, however, Hollywood went from the implied rape of a 13-year-old Dakota Fanning, to the graphic rape, bondage, and enslavement of a 13-year-old Chloe Grace Moretz in a new film hitting Sundance titled Hick.

Actress Mila Kunis: Middle America Stupid for Not Loving Obama

-By Warner Todd Huston

It is always amusing to hear actors and actresses venture into the unfamiliar territory of politics when interviewers are cruel enough to broach such issues. Sadly, actress Mila Kunis is no exception to that Hollyweird tendency toward guffaw inducing political bloviating. Naturally and in keeping with most of the rest of the industry, in a new interview she’s disgorging that prosaic, ill-conceived, left-wing trope that she heard somewhere or another that serves as the basis of her “opinion.”

Of course she’s all a gush over The One. “I love Barack Obama, I voted for him and I will forever be proud of my vote,” she is reported as saying to Britain’s Stylist magazine.

Kunis, it appears, considers herself highly informed about politics and most especially on how wonderfully she thinks Obama is doing in office. Conversely, she seems blissfully unaware of the zero job growth we just experienced not to mention the highest unemployment this country has experienced since The Great Depression. She seems also completely ignorant of the trillions of dollars of debt that Obama has piled up.

Still, she is sure that the compromises that she thinks Obama made in recent economic policies are going to hurt us.

You know It’s Bad When Even Leftist British Comedian Says England ‘No Longer English’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Wow. You know it’s gotten bad in the U.K. when a left-wing actor and British icon is now saying that his country has lost its essential Englishness. It looks like Monty Python alum John Cleese has “funny walked” his way into a bit of a controversy over his remarks, and this time from the left for a change.

Last week the 71-year-old comedian told a Sydney, Australia TV audience that London was “no longer an English city.”

You could see the steam come from the left’s ears over that one.

According to The Sun, Cleese was asked about what he felt about the yob riots that plagued England in August. Cleese apparently wasn’t very sanguine of the state of things in jolly old England.

Chicago’s Marilyn Monroe Stature: From the Windy City to the Tacky City

-By Warner Todd Huston

I finally made it downtown to see the absurd Marilyn Monroe statue that sits in Pioneer Court, the public mall area next to Tribune Tower on Michigan Avenue near the Chicago River. I have to say it is as tacky in person as it seems in photos. Moreso, maybe.

The paean to Marilyn Monroe’s famous sewer grate scene in the movie “The Seven Year Itch” went up in early July. It was created by New Jersey artist Seward Johnson and portrays Monroe as she stood above the sewer grate, dress flying in the air, face in that patented Monroe look of ecstasy.

To me, however, it resembles not so much a sculpture as it does a cheap kewpie doll-like, carnival prize. Unfortunately, it isn’t kewpie doll sized but is so big at 26-feet-tall that you can’t simply dismiss it as mere kitsch.

Coming Soon A George Harrison BioPic from Martin Scorsese

-By Warner Todd Huston

I have to say, I am very interested in this project. It’s a Harrison biopic movie. No, not William Henry Harrison. Not even Benjamin Harrison. It’s George Harrison, the Beatle.

I have always been more fascinated by “the quiet Beatle,” George Harrison, than the others. I also like his music far better than John Lennon’s. I have most of Harrison’s solo albums, but not many of John’s solo work.

Harrison’s music was much more complex than both Lennon’s and McCartney’s, I have always thought. And Harrison developed a very distinctive sound, too. His last album, “Brainwashed” is very fun.

2010: The Entertainment Industry’s PC Year in Review

-By Warner Todd Huston

For the entertainment industry’s practitioners of political correctness, 2010 was another banner year. Even as conservatives have made deserved headway in La La Land and other areas of the industry, there still aren’t enough conservatives to bring much needed patriotism, logic, and common sense to the scene. Sadly, the industry is still filled with those slavishly dedicated to anti-American tropes, left-wing blather, and self-hatred. From comic books, to music, to radio, TV and movies, PCism still runs rampant.

Without further ado, here are just a few examples of PCism from 2010 in music, TV, movies, and publishing. Certainly there are many more and these are not necessarily a “top ten,” but these examples do serve to show that PCism is not dead despite the Tea Party uprising, the growth of the conservative new media, and the resulting Republican tsunami from the midterm elections.

(In no particular order…)
Movies and Actors

Who could forget the film Machette, starring Danny Trejo and directed by Robert Rodriguez? This one was a sort of pastiche of 1970s exploitation movies with a Mexican twist. The film was replete with White sherifs ruthlessly murdering pregnant Mexican immigrants, American businessmen working to keep Mexicans down, overpowering racism against Mexicans by white Americans and it all seemed intended to inflame militant Mexican nationalism and to goad illegal immigrants in America to put all the blame on white America. The creators claimed it was supposed to be just good, over-the-top fun but in the climate of racial tensions in America today it was as funny as a militant Mexican flavored attempt to start a race war.

RIP Captain Beefheart

-By Warner Todd Huston

Back in the late 70s and early 80s I got into a band called “Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band.” Really great, wacky, seemingly improvised, music. Strange, haunting, exuberant. Did I say strange?

The Captain was one Don Van Vliet. He was a friend and contemporary of Frank Zappa (hence the “strange” part). Well, I missed the news a few days ago, but I just found out that the Captain has passed away on Dec. 17th. He was 69.

If you’d like to learn more about Don Van Vliet, here is a great profile of the man written by Lester Bangs of Village Voice.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Vliet’s odd musical excursions inspired many later hit makers. Johnny Lydon, Devo, PJ Harvey, Joe Strummer, the Residents, Tom Waits, Pere Ubu and the Fall all claimed to have been inspired by Captain Beefheart.

Even though his musical career was never a giant financial and popular success, he did have critical acclaim. Still, where he made an even larger mark was in the world of abstract painting.

I never did go back and try to get any of the Magic Band’s work on CD. All my albums are still on vinyl! I haven’t listened to them in years. Now that the Captain has passed on, maybe I’ll break them out again.

It’s The End of Days: A Hanna Montana Tribute Act??

-By Warner Todd Huston

For a Sunday headshaker, My Chicago friend Pat Hickey has alerted us to a catastrophe of Biblical proportions. The Seventh Seal is broken, he says. Why is it the end of days? Because there is now a Hannah Montana tribute Act out there plying your local Summerfests and carnivals.

Seriously. A Hanna Montana tribute band? If it isn’t the end of days it’s at least the end of entertainment. Here we have a young girl recreating a fake girl, in fake hair, doing a fake act, for a non-existent band. It is so many levels of manufactured “entertainment” that it boggles the mind.

I’m Quoted in the Washington Times

-By Warner Todd Huston

WaTimes writer Jennifer Harper gave me a ring the night that Michael Jackson died and asked for some reaction to the media coverage. I have no interest in Michael Jackson specifically. I’ve never purchased his music and likely never will. I used to switch stations when I heard his stuff hit my radio.

But, Harper’s angle was interesting. Read on music lover…

Death video, photos radiate as media, Internet go viral

By Jennifer Harper

It is shades of paparazzi past.

A photo of Michael Jackson, engulfed by an oxygen mask and lying in an ambulance, was made public Thursday afternoon, even before his death was officially announced. Footage of Mr. Jackson’s body being moved from hospital to morgue was trailed overhead by a TV station helicopter, as if the crew were following a police chase or tracking a celebrity wedding.

“It’s truly the coarsening of our culture. It’s the Princess Diana syndrome. Can you remember a time in the past when morbid photos of celebrities were spread all over the place for all to see?” said Warner Todd Huston, a media analyst with Newsbusters.com and publiusforum.com.

“It is driving us down the road of bad taste and poor judgment. Some of it has to do with our culture of communication. You have to know things right this minute. Now. On Twitter, or on the screen. People are not willing to be reflective at a time like this, which deserved solemnity,” Mr. Huston said.

Robert Lichter, director of the Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Mason University, said he “wouldn’t be surprised if we see the autopsy photos….

If you Don’t Like Your Uncle Sammy… Get OUT!

1915 was about the last time America had the right idea about its immigrants and this song from that era is emblematic of that: assimilate or get lost. Don’t Bite the Hand That’s Feeding You, words by Thomas Hoier and music by Jimmie Morgan, first became popular in 1915 and expresses just that theme. This version was recorded on Edison Records by Walter Van Brunt aka Walter Scanlon.

The basic theme of the tune tells ungrateful immigrants that if they’ve come to hate the United States, their adopted home, then they can get the heck out and go back to the armpit nation from which they came. We don’t need them here.

Unfortunately, too many Americans are afraid to tell ungrateful whiners that want to complain about the U.S.A. to take a hike these days. It’s all about being afraid of immigrants, now. Well, I say we should play this song and takes its message to heart.

So, here it is Don’t Bite the Hand That’s Feeding You.

The sad thing is one of our national parties has built itself on refashioning its members as American ingrates. If this theme were to be applied every Democrat in the country would have to leave!

Girls Had Enough of Being Called ‘Hos’ In Rap Music, Organize High School Ban

-By Warner Todd Huston

Three energetic young girls from Arcadia High School have been successful in having 20 offensive Rap songs banned from their high school prom dance. The trio got 1,000 other students to sign a petition excoriating Rap tunes that employ against women derogatory terms such as “bitches” and “Hos.”

With their campaign the girls of the Arcadia High Women’s Health and Issues Club convinced school administrators to drop the songs from the prom music playlist.

Club members were not advocating for replacement songs nor for any particular genera of music, just to eliminate songs that featured abusive language toward women, presented women as objects, or treated women as “animals.”

Naturally, these girls are catching all manner of guff from other students. This junk Rap music is very popular with kids despite the misogynistic lyrics, the low level of intelligence celebrated in them, the bad language, and the low-class, thug lifestyles often pervading them.

Kid Rock: Entertainers Should ‘Keep Their Mouths Shut on Politics’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Read it and weep, Dixie Chicks. Shove it Bruce Springsteen. Put a sock in it Johnny Cougar Mellencamp. Because, in a refreshing change of pace for the entertainment industry, Kid Rock is telling CMT Insider via People Magazine that entertainers should stay quiet on matters political.

How many times have you seen the uninformed blather of some goof from Hollywood, or some crank from the music industry filling your TV screen or oozing from your radio? How many low brow maestros have had your eyes rolling when they imagine themselves to have some prescient insight into matters of politics? Apparently rock singer Kid Rock is signing onto your piquancy because he has said that singers should just shut up about politics.
