Boston Herald Calls Male Cross-Dressing Prisoner ‘She’ Throughout Story

-By Warner Todd Huston

Apparently the Boston Herald has taken up the PC line if its story on cross-dressing prisoner Robert “Michelle” Kosilek from August 12 is any indication because the Herald decided to call Kosilek “she” throughout the article.

Robert Kosilek is in prison for the 1990 murder of his wife and has been living “as a woman” in the male correctional facility since 1993. Kosilek has not undergone a sex change operation but had until recently been enjoying the benefit of state paid electrolysis in order to eliminate unwanted hair so that his appearance as a woman could be enhanced.

The current controversy over Kosilek’s claims to being a woman trapped in a man’s body is over the recently halted payments by the state for the electrolysis and Kosilek’s lawsuit demanding that the state pay for a sex change surgery.

Assoc. Press Downplays Townhall Anger

-By Warner Todd Huston

In an August 17 piece on former DNC Chair Howard Dean’s appearance on a morning news show, the Associated Press did its best to downplay the high passions and anger showed by thousands of average citizens at townhall meetings across the country.

Dean was heard insisting that Obama not back down from including the “public option” in any healthcare bill, saying that such a feature is “indispensable” to its success at reforming our healthcare system. After the opening paragraphs, the AP characterized the possible removal of the public option by emphasizing Republicans and downplaying the outrage seen by citizens themselves.

Dean appeared on morning news shows Monday amid increasing indications the Obama White House is retreating from the public option in the face of vocal opposition from Republicans and some vocal participants at a town-hall-style meetings around the country.

“Some vocal participants at town-hall style meetings,” AP? Anyone watching the news accounts of the townhall meetings over the last three weeks will see far more than merely “some vocal participants” displaying their disagreement with Obamacare policies. The outrage being seen at these meetings has been the hottest news item around for weeks. There is far more than “some” vocal participants.

Most Bankruptcies Because of Medical Debt? Uh, no.

-By Warner Todd Huston

Early in June The New York Times was all aghast that overwhelming debt from medical bills will cause “nearly two out of three bankruptcies” in the US. Since then the White House has also used the statistic as a way to sell Obamacare policies and frighten voters into accepting a nationalized healthcare system. But is it true? Are medical bills the culprit of more than 60% of American bankruptcies?

The stark claim that medical debt is the scourge of citizens everywhere comes from a study published in The American Journal of Medicine. Its findings are certainly alarming with an outrageous rate of 62% of bankruptcies being caused by medical bill debt, such debt supposedly having risen 49% between 2001 and 2007. If true, this is a disastrous finding.

But is it true? Not according to the American Enterprise Institute’s Aparna Mathur. Mathur finds a very different story when looking over the available studies and statistics. In testimony before the House Committee on the Judiciary in July, Mathur finds a far less threatening picture.

National Review Posts One of Mine

-By Warner Todd Huston

Well, I am happy to announce that the National Review Institute (of NRO magazine fame) has posted one of my media bias stories.

And now we must ask the age old question…. is my writing improving to a higher level…. or did NRO just lower itself to publish one of my scribblings?! Ha, ha.

USA Today Hides Left Wing Sources of ‘Church’ Effort for Min. Wage Push

-By Warner Todd Huston

USA Today is attempting to pass off an effort to push a higher minimum wage law as an effort by “churches” when in reality it is a left wing effort sponsored by ACORN, unions and the extremist group American Progress headed by former Clinton front man, John Podesta.

With a misleading headline and an artfully vague first paragraph, USA Today tries to make this effort seem to be headed up by churches and religious figures. The headline, “Churches push for $10 minimum wage by 2010,” pins this effort squarely on churches even as the first paragraph walks that claim back in an artfully vague way.

Religious leaders and advocates, not satisfied with the 70-cent rise in the federal minimum wage that went into effect on Friday, are calling on congressional leaders to hike it up to $10 by 2010.

Notice how the headline doesn’t quite match up to the “Religious leaders and advocates” of the first paragraph. Notice that it goes from “churches” to “advocates.” We all know that churches and advocates are not necessarily one and the same. And when it comes to left wing “advocates,” actual churches are rarely anywhere involved.

Right in the first paragraph we must realize that it isn’t really “churches” that are involved in this effort but it is more likely the advocates of the first paragraph that is heading this min. wage movement.

Lincoln Mitchell’s Disingenuous Huffington Post on Healthcare

-By Warner Todd Huston

On Huffington Post, Lincoln Mitchell bills himself as the “Assistant Professor in the Practice of International Politics” at Columbia University but I think he’s better suited to a job as a minion in a ministry of truth in some Orwellian dystopian fantasy novel. In any case, his latest screed on the evilness of evil Republicans and their Nazi-like attack on those peace-loving, kind, and pure Obamacare policies certainly serves as a perfect sample of his propensity to propagandize. Truth be damned because here comes Linc Mitchell to the rescue of Obamacre.

In his HuffPo piece Mitchell attacks anyone that opposes Obamacare casting them as evil monsters yet in this perfect example of propaganda offers not a shred of proof or a single example to prove out his claims of the evil machinations of anti-Obamacare protesters. In his sycophantic support of Obama he makes all sorts of charges about the motives and organizations supposedly behind the healthcare townhall protests yet offers nothing to connect the dots. He just says it’s so and moves on as if it is all a matter of obvious fact.

Mr. Mitchell also makes several pronouncements about the kindness and soft-spoken nature of the American left and makes to compare their supposedly more intelligent and mature form of debate to that of those loud, crass Republicans. Again, he simply states this nonsense as it if is true regardless of the last 100 years of loud, crass liberal riots, bombings, murders, and protests that prove his claims an outright lie.

Now CNN Reporting on What Sarah ISN’T Doing

-By Warner Todd Huston

To show how obsessed the Old Media is over Governor Palin, now CNN has a story on its website ruminating over what Sarah isn’t doing. It seems that she can’t get away from the Old Media even by doing nothing. First they lose their minds over what she is doing, and then when she stops doing something, they go ga ga over that, too.

This time Eric Kuhn, CNN’s “Audience Interaction Producer” — what ever the heck that is — is all caught up over if and when Sarah will re-launch her Twitter account. “Is Palin getting ready to tweet again?,” Khun breathlessly asked on the 13th.

Listen, we all love Sarah, but is this actually news?

Journo Asks Why Can’t ‘Progressives’ Win?

-By Warner Todd Huston

The L.A.Times’ Dan Neil is confused. He thinks that the so-called progressive movement is right on all the issues, but he just cannot understand why they can’t win the public debate, especially on healthcare. Neil laments that they have all the “English majors” on their side but cannot win “any war of words.” Just what is going on here, he wants to know? He’s so frustrated that he took to his keyboard to ask these questions in a Pittsburgh Gazette article from August 9.

In his piece, Neil wonders why the “progressives” are so inept at debate and cannot convince the lowly voters of the merits of their argument even though they are obviously right? He goes on to bemoan that the “progressives” are trying, but are just too darn nice, too “anti-inflammatory” in their rhetoric. He concludes that it’s time for the “progressives” to take off the gloves and fight dirty like the “insurance companies” have been doing.

Now, Mr. Neil seems like a smart fella. All his words are spelled correctly, and all. But for all his moaning and gnashing of teeth about why the “progressives” just can’t seem to win he misses the elephant in the room. “Progressives” can’t win because they are liars. And, as his blather in the Gazette shows, Neil is a liar, too.

Newest Obama Smoke Screen: ‘Gives’ Drug Lobby ‘Seat at Table’

-By Warner Todd Huston

The LATimes is once again trying to sell another Obama healthcare fairy tale to an unsuspecting public. This time, ABC is reporting that Obama has “given a seat at the table” of the healthcare debate to former Louisiana congressman Billy Tauzin who now represents some powerful drug companies. The Times is reporting this as if it is meaningful news. Unfortunately for all concerned it is not.

For the Times, Tom Hamburger starts off mentioning how Obama lambasted Tauzin and his lobbying interests during the recent presidential campaign but that he’s done an about face by inviting Tauzin to the White House on numerous occasions to discuss his industry’s needs concerning the healthcare policies Obama is trying to ram down everyone’s throat.

Gingrich Defends Palin on ‘Death Panels’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Obviously ABC’s George Stephanapoulos tried to get former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich to trash Sarah Palin, but the wily former Speaker wasn’t having any of that noise.

After Stephanapoulos read Governor Palin’s comments about the “evil” of a government system that would tell its patients to die instead of helping them live, Speaker Gingrich reminds us all that Obama is asking us to “trust the government” on communal standards which will set up a system where bureaucrats decide what healthcare we are “allowed” to have. The former Speaker also reminds us that these standards are a dangerous road down which to travel and that euthanasia is a likely outcome of bureaucrats deciding who is worth getting healthcare and who isn’t.

New York Mag Sees Palin Under Bed at Night

-By Warner Todd Huston

New York Magazine is so afraid of Palin that it cannot help but imagine grand, wild conspiracy theories even in her choice of New York restaurants. Seriously.

The now ex-guv was in New York this week to meet with her publisher and decided to take a little time from business for a nice dinner at the well known eatery Michaels. The restaurant is a hang out for denizens of the publishing industry so it might seem a natural thing that her publisher would take her to a place where publishers hang out… right?

Not according to New York Magazine. To the scandal inventors of this rag, Palin could only have ulterior motives for daring to go to a restaurant that serves as a hang out for journalists.

Guess she just couldn’t have been hungry, right?

Liberals Love to Write Conservatism’s Obituary

-By Warner Todd Huston

Did you know that the election of Barack Obama means that conservatism is dead forever more? The New Yorker thinks it is anyway. Its recent piece on the authors of the “Little House on the Prairie” series not only pronounces conservatism likely dead but also imagines the same fate for capitalism itself. This is just another example of how the self-congratulatory, isolated left constantly announces the death of capitalism and conservatism as it has been doing since FDR, our second most socialist president ever, came to power.

So how does one get from talking about the beloved children’s classic of rugged individualists eking out a living in the wild, wide-open wilderness to the announcement that capitalism and conservatism are dead? It’s the sort of trick that only a left leaning publication like the New Yorker can do and it does it well here.

As it happens, the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder and co-author of the “Little House” series, Rose Lane Wilder, was in her later life a high profile conservative or libertarian who hobnobbed with the likes of Ayn Rand. In the middle of the 20th century with their history of self-reliance, Rose and mother Laura shied away from the Democrats when FDR was elected because of he advocated statism. Rose Lane called FDR a “dictator” and decried the generous welfare programs that the Democrats were sponsoring.

The American Left and a Fear of Rabbits

-By Warner Todd Huston

Remember back during the Carter years when that good ol’ president from Georgia was frightened by a killer rabbit? Remember how real men everywhere ridiculed the Man from Plains for being afraid of rabbits? With that incident in mind, I cannot help but feel that the entire, unhinged left is currently in a state of a fear of rabbits. The left is collectively unmanning itself over fear of “the right,” a political grouping that is essentially harmless when compared to the level of faux alarm on the left or even when compared to themselves in years past.

Examples are everywhere, but I will suffice with two for our purposes here. The first is a column by James Zogby in The National. Muslim apologist and lefty alarmist Zogby had his killer rabbit moment in his ridiculously headlined, “Anti-Obama Fringe Scarier Than Ever,” in which he purports to detail how frightening the American right wing is. Sadly for Zogby his efforts end up seeming absurd with his over-the-top concern of the rabbits on the right.

Zogby is all worried over the “scary fringe” of the right as they worry themselves over Obama’s place of birth and his Muslim heritage. Zogby tries his best to spin fear out of some misinformed folks on the right but he fails to prove that anything “scary” is going on in the American right wing. It isn’t for lack of trying, of course — he uses the word “scary,” “nutty,” and “fringe” over and over in a valiant attempt to cajole the reader into becoming alarmed.

Unfortunately for his fearmongering, Zogby doesn’t really give any example of anything “scary.” There is no violence described, no oppression, no powerful discrimination, in short nothing he mentions coming from the right wing is truly scary. Off color? Perhaps. Annoying? Probably to some. But “scary”? No.

Old Media Bending Over Backwards to Excuse Obama’s Ratings Fall

-By Warner Todd Huston

Derek Thompson over at the Atlantic seems to be a perfect example of blaming everyone and everything but Obama for the fact that the president’s ratings on his prime time TV pressers have steadily fallen since the first one. It can’t be Obama’s fault! It has to be other reasons. Why, Obama is da schnizzle,The One, the Obammessiah, dontcha know?

Here is what Thompson says of the low ratings that Obama got for his last TV appearance to push his healthcare plan:

Since Obama’s health care press conference notched the lowest ratings of his presidency, the word is growing that talking about health care is sure-fire way to kill your ratings. Health care, after all, is really complicated, and reforming it is even more complicated. What’s more, cable’s preferred method of discussing policy is to bring in two sides and have them “debate” for two minutes, which is a bad way to cover anything simple and a tortured way to explain anything complicated.

Michael Calderone of Politico spoke to a couple studio and radio people and comes away with the distinct sense that everybody considers health care reform very importantly, very complicated, and very tricky to pull off.

Oh, no, it isn’t that the president is losing his appeal. It couldn’t be that people are beginning to realize that the man is an out right liar. It couldn’t be Obama’s fault that his ratings are steadily falling with every new TV appearance. It couldn’t be that he is foolishly over exposing himself and making people sick and tired of him. Why, it MUST be that the healthcare debate is just too darn complicated for the dumb, stupid, lowly people to understand so they are turning off their TVs.

Thompson blames everyone but Obama for Obama’s falling ratings.

Reuters Attacking Joe the Plumber… STILL!

-By Warner Todd Huston

What is with Reuters and “truth”? Apparently truth is something with which Reuters is wholly unfamiliar. The wire service proved this point once again by yet another attack on Joe the Plumber, that stalwart Ohioan that asked Obama a tax question during the campaign causing then candidate Obama to utter his gaffe about government “spreading the wealth.”

Here is what Reuters said of Joe on July 25:

Reporters later learned that Wurzelbacher did not have a plumbing license, was behind on his taxes, had a real first name of Sam, and was unmarried with a teenage son.

These things are basically lies against Mr. Wurzelbacher, lies that the left has been promulgating since Joe became the subject of smear campaigns because he helped unveil Obama’s socialist outlook on government power.

Shoddy Journalism at Wash. Post Claiming RIght is ‘Frightening Seniors’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Recently in the Washington Post Ceci Connolly did a wonderful job proving that she is a member of the vast left wing conspiracy trying to protect Obamacare but didn’t do such a good job proving her legitimacy as a journalist. At issue is her story about the meanies in talk radio that she is claiming is trying to “frighten seniors” about Obama’s healthcare policies.

The main problem with Connolly’s story is that she offers little proof that talk radio is trying to “scare seniors.” But she did spend an inordinate amount of space explaining away the very Obama policies that are responsible for scaring seniors, namely the end-of-life counseling and healthcare rationing in the bill.

Connolly uses an activist’s rhetoric as if she is confronting “the enemy” right at the outset of her “report.”

The Media’s Constant Palin Hyperbole

-By Warner Todd Huston

A recent CBS report by Scott Conroy and director of political coverage Steve Chaggaris is typical of the hyperbole to which the Old Media is prone when “reporting” (by that you can read dramatizing) Sarah Palin’s political doings.

This report is not as chock full of it as some others that have utilized over-the-top phrases and rhetoric to beat down Palin, but there are a few here that ring typical of the sort of backdoor slams that the Old Media constantly over use in its Palin coverage.

We start with the opening line:

APs Babington Misleads That Gates Arrested Because He’s Black

-By Warner Todd Huston

In an “analysis” on how President Obama is dealing with the race issue, AP writer Charles Babington seems to have based his take on what happened to Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. on the assumption that Gates was arrested for being black in his home, not that he was arrested for disorderly conduct and for his outrageous disrespect for a police officer — something to which other police officers involved attest, officers that are themselves minorities.

Babington so soft peddles Obama’s gaffe against the police officers, leaving out so many details that, after reading the story, one finds it difficult to understand why Obama’s words were so controversial. And it’s all in a seeming effort to cover for the president and try to help him reclaim the high ground on race in America. The whole Babington piece appears to be far more of an effort to smooth the waters for Obama instead of provide any actual analysis of the incident.

Part of Gates Gate Not Getting Much Media Attention

-By Warner Todd Huston

A recent New York Post story brought up a point about the arrest of Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. that few in the Old Media have paid much attention to. Apparently, Gates has since the arrest announced he is in the early stages of involvement in a PBS TV series on civil rights in America. It is odd that this single fact has not been a focus of much discussion.

After all, if Gates is about to start a TV show about civil rights, what better way to punch up that participation than to “suddenly” get mixed up in a national civil rights “abuse” case? What better way to highlight America’s civil rights problem than to become a nationally known victim of so-called racism?

Why is no one asking how long Gates has been in the planning stages of this TV show? Was he planning it since before the arrest? It all leads one to wonder if Gates saw an opportunity to gin up interest in his TV appearance by becoming a victim? Instead of experiencing any actual racial tension, did Gates invent his own ready-made, sensational incident to turn his scholarly civil rights discussion into the quintessential TV reality show extravaganza? Was all this just a TV stunt in Gates’ mind? Was it mere opportunism?

CNNs Resident Whiner, Rick Sanchez

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last week, CNN’s Rick Sanchez decided in his infinite wisdom (yes, that’s sarcasm) that any “Hispanic” that works for Fox News is a “sellout.” Apparently Sanchez imagines that any person of Latin heritage that works for any network other than CNN is an Uncle Thomas.

First of all, I’d say anyone that identifies himself as an “Hispanic” in the first place is a “sellout.” A sellout to the politically correct. You see, the word Hispanic is a manufactured word invented to lump together so many South American, Central American, and European nationalities, cultures, languages and genetic profiles that it really has no logical meaning. There really is no such thing as an “Hispanic” person when you get right down to it. It’s a meaningless construct.

Anyway, our resident CNN whiner is apparently feeling a bit of heat from all those “Neocons” (another meaningless construct, by the way) and conservatives whose tongues he set to wagging because of his idiotic comment about sellouts. Lil’ Ricky is so put upon that it sent him to Twitter again to bemoan his being all beat up by the conservatives.

Naval Cmmdr Sues Journalist for ‘Sexual Harassment’

Over at Media Bistro, we find an odd story that has it all: foul language, boorish behavior, sexual harassment, a male U.S. Navy officer, and a female journalist. Only the story isn’t what you might think it would be considering the ingredients. In this case it is the naval officer filining a complaint aganst the female reporter for sexual harassment.

Media Bistro has learned that US Navy Commander Jeffrey D. Gordon has filed a sexual harassment complaint against the Miami Herald’s Carol Rosenberg with Gordon claiming that Rosenberg made comments about Gordon’s “sexual orientation,” repeatedly showered foul language upon him, and made comments of a sexual nature to him in the presence of others.

L.A.Times Still Calling it the ‘So-Called War on Terror’

-By Warner Todd Huston

In the L.A. Times on July 22, writer Catherine Lyons again revealed a bit of her Bush Derangement Syndrome by calling the war on terror a “so-called war on terror.” What is with these people that simply cannot accept terms of reality? It’s like this every time they use the word terrorism, or “terrorism” as the Old Media so often terms it, and the war on terror. The Old Media simply refuses to understand that terrorism exists, that it is a problem, and that we are at war with terrorists.

This usage of the “so-called” remark was doubly amusing because Lyons threw in her “so-called war on terror” comment into a story about U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s visit to a closed meeting of Muslims held in Los Angeles on July 18. Her scoffing at the war on terror seemed geared to let Muslim readers in on the fact that she didn’t believe there was terrorism or that Bush was really fighting a war on terror… wink, wink.

Why Did MSNBC Edit Hillary’s CFR Speech?

-By Warner Todd Huston

On July 15, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appeared before the Council on Foreign Relations, the much maligned organization often at the center of many global conspiracy theories.

We won’t talk about the merits of the CFR itself, here, but what made me curious is the treatment that MSNBC gave the Clinton speech. It appears that MSNBC edited out Clinton’s opening statement thanking the CFR for having her. When reading what she said at the outset of the speech one might become suspicious that MSNBC was trying to provide cover for the Secretary of State whose comments opened her up to the tongue wagging of conspiracy buffs.

The ebullient, effusive, gobstoppery about the life and times of Walter “the most trusted man in America” Cronkite is getting a little too thick around the Old Media landscpe and the latest slobbering love-in by Roger Simon of Politico has at last driven me to say “enuff’s enuf.”

Simon’s saccharine memorial oozes from my computer like syrup and it is just as oversweet, and just as unhealthy. Natives Getting Restless: HuffPo Blogger Wants to be Paid

-By Warner Todd Huston

In How The Huffington Post Can Pay Its Bloggers, HuffPo blogger Michelle Haimoff seems to have gotten a tad miffed at how Arianna Huffington is making millions on the backs of her bloggers without “paying it forward,” as it were. Consequently, Haimoff has developed a prototype scheme on how Arianna can pay her long toiling bloggers to help fulfill her “responsibility” to journalism.

I think that Haimoff, however, misses the point of the Huffington Post. It isn’t now and never was about “journalism.” It’s about left-wing advocacy and advertising sales. Journalists need not apply. As we discussed early in July, journalism isn’t what HuffPo does.

Campbell Brown: ‘CNN Only One Still Doing Journalism’

-By Warner Todd Huston

On an interview show called “Give and Take,” hosted by sometime TV pundit Julie Menin, CNN’s Campbell Brown patted herself and her network on the back for being “the only one that is still doing journalism” in cable land.

Menin asked Brown if she felt odd being a “political independent” in this world of cable pundits and lamented that journalism seems to be scant these days. Menin told Brown that at one time, “obviously journalists were independent.” Brown replied by assuming the truth of that “independence” and stated that she and CNN are the only ones “doing journalism” any more.

Menin’s odd assumption, though, that journalists are “political independents” is interesting because of the pervasive left-wing bias that is seen throughout the business. Does Menin think “independent” just means free of conservative ideology but otherwise free to be a liberal?

NYT Decries ‘Partisan Divide’ in Healthcare, Never Mentions Democrat Opposition

-By Warner Todd Huston

Here’s another one of those wonderful examples of how the Old Media will use a headline that makes a stark claim about how rotten Republicans are for opposing a Democratic plan while at the same time conveniently ignoring the opposition to the same idea among Democrats.

This time it is the “partisan divide” in the healthcare debate. The Times tsks Republicans for solidly lining up to oppose Obama’s wild grab for nearly 20 percent of the nation’s economy through his healthcare plans. Yet not once does the Times mention the many areas in which Democrats are disagreeing with Democrats on Obamacare. The Times makes it seem as if there is no dissent among Democrats and it is only those meanie Republicans holding up the wonderfulness of Obamacare.

Journalist Tells of Harrowing Protest Experience in… Israel?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Over the last few weeks dozens of Iranians yearning for a more democratic government, striving to beat back the oppressive Mullahs, desperate to live free, have been killed in the streets of Iran during democratic protests. In China Uighurs and members of the religious sect Falun Gong are constantly attacked, imprisoned, tortured and killed for their ethnicity or beliefs by Chinese officials. Not long ago Buddhist Monks were killed by police for their protests in the streets of Myanmar. And on a nearly daily basis, members of the Taliban are killing villagers for not observing their oppressive rule in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

We live in times of violent protests tearing at some of the most oppressive governments in the world. And so, Australia’s ABC fielded a report about one “violent” protest experienced by one of its own reporters. Was it murderous Islamists attacking villagers? How about Chinese thugs killing ethnics? Perhaps it was an Iranian Mullah ordered massacre of citizens wanting democracy that frightened her so much?

Uh, no. It was Orthodox Jews that spit on her.

CNN’s Analysis, Sotomayor a ‘Cautious and Careful Liberal,’ is Left Rhetoric Exemplified

If you want to see how liberals in the media “do” their thing, nothing has been a better example than the analysis by CNN’s Jeffery Toobin. We’ve highlighted some on-air work of his Sotomayor coverage, but he also has a written piece on CNN.com that is a perfect example of how the left spins rhetoric to legitimize leftist precepts.

In his July 13 piece, for instance, Toobin calls Sotomayor a “cautious and careful liberal” like Ginsburg and Breyer. So, it makes one wonder, has Toobin ever called anyone on the right a “cautious and careful conservative”?
