Why We Can’t Trust Government on Technology

-By Warner Todd Huston

Free market advocates have for years been fighting the anti-capitalist left over government control of the Internet, a battle that has reached a temporary plateau when Obama’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) arbitrarily decided that it was in full control of the Internet and by fiat implemented the left’s long-sought net neutrality rules. This isn’t the only technology kerfuffle that the federal government is involved in, either.

Another techno-mess has been raging over a contract being considered by the Department of the Interior for its new email/messaging system using a cloud computing solution. The fight has been between Microsoft and Google and the results tends to prove that the government is as tech stupid as a Luddite on steroids. It tends to show that the government simply can’t be trusted with technology issues, whether net neutrality or otherwise.

Union Plan: ‘Forget About the Law, Brand Businesses as Human Right Violators’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Once again we see how lawless the Obama administration and its allies in unions are. By their own admission they don’t care about the law.

In the following video we see Obama’s appointee to his Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations and United Auto Workers President, Bob King, telling attendees at a recent union roundtable discussion that the unions intend to “forget about the law.”

We also see violence prone AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, a close Obama confidante, saying the same thing.

So, their plan is to ignore any actual law and then further to “brand” businesses as “human rights violators” so that they can destroy them.

Unions are entirely un-American. At their core they are socialist, anti-capitalist, destroyers of jobs and success. And remember, folks. THESE are Obama’s people.

Your Taxes Paying Government Union Members NOT to Work

-By Warner Todd Huston

Must be nice to be a government worker in a government union. Heck, some of these government union guys are even paid not to work and paid by the taxpayers to do so, yet!

Vincent Vernuccio, labor policy guy at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, tells us that the Obama administration is even ignoring its responsibility to report on the matter. Obama is over a year late in releasing its Time Usage in the Federal Government Report, a report that tracks all the time that government union members spend working for the union bosses on the dime of the people.

The sad fact is that many government union contracts have a provision in them that stipulates that union members that have duties with the union itself (administrative, recruitment, what have you) can perform these duties while they are on the job and being paid by the taxpayers supposedly to do government business.

Follow Up: Frightened Mexican Business Owners Look To Immigrate to USA

-By Warner Todd Huston

Yesterday I wrote of how stricter immigration laws in the US are scaring away Mexico’s low-skilled, uneducated masses from wanting to come to the USA. I mentioned it was a good thing that the dregs of Mexico are staying in Mexico. Today I celebrate another story that reports that some of Mexico’s business class and members of its upper middle classes are looking to come to the US because of fear of the drug wars raging south of the boarder. They are bringing their wealth and their businesses with them, too. This is also a good thing.

The Monitor of McAllen, Texas reports that Mexicans applying for the federal EB-5 investment program are on the rise as violence and crime rises in Mexico. The EB-5 program is a twenty-year-old federal program created to entice successful businessmen of other countries to immigrate to the US and bring their businesses with them…

Mexican’s Increased Suspicion of USA Over Immigration Laws

-By Warner Todd Huston

According to the Christian Science Monitor Mexicans might be becoming “reticent about taking that midnight train to Georgia” and emigrating to America whether illegally or not. All this because of new, more stringent immigration laws being enacted in the various states, Georgia being only the latest example.

The bill, which Gov. Nathan Deal (R) is expected to sign, is the latest in a wave of immigration reform legislation that is sweeping the US and souring Mexican opinion of America. Prior to the enactment of the Arizona’s controversial SB 1070 one year ago, 62 percent of Mexicans had a positive opinion of the US, compared with 44 percent after the law passed, according to the Pew Research Center.

The Monitor has several examples of Mexicans changing plans and deciding to stay in Mexico. To this all I can say is… it’s about time…

Act Now to Support Workers Comp Reform in Illinois!‏

From Americans for Prosperity – Illinois…

Americans for Prosperity has learned that one of the most comprehensive workers compensation packages (SB 1349) is moving through the State Senate at an aggressive pace.

It’s essential that lawmakers reform the workers compensation system in Illinois. Illinois’ system of workers compensation is one the most generous systems in the nation. For this reason and more, the cost factors of the workers comp laws in Illinois place our businesses and our state at a great disadvantage with other states.

More About Inflation

-By Thomas E. Brewton

Inflation that affects the entire economy originates with government action.

Price increases that arise from temporary imbalances between supply and demand in specific product markets are not examples of general inflation.

If bad weather or other factors reduce the yield of food crops like wheat or corn, the lowered supply (or anticipation of reduced supply) will cause prices to rise in world markets. Higher prices will deter some buyers, reducing demand until prices stabilize at some higher level. Higher prices will induce farmers to increase acreage planted for the next crop season, thereby moving anticipated supplies back up toward normal demand levels, until prices stabilize at reduced levels.

Don’t Blame Business For Our Inflation

-By Thomas E. Brewton

Politicians will always falsely blame inflation on businessmen’s “greed.” But only government deficit spending using fiat money can create inflation.

Inflation consists in increasing the money supply faster than the increase in production of goods that people want, the condition we endure today, in spades.

If it were true, as liberal-progressives and politicians of all stripes tell us, that greedy businessmen cause inflation by raising prices whenever it suits them, why should businessmen stop at increases of 2% or 3%? Why not raise prices 50%. The answer, of course, is that they can’t raise prices whenever it suits them without a consumer rebellion.

Note that the Keynesian concept of cost-push inflation is a myth. The phenomenon of raw materials and food cost increases leading to increased wages starts with over-expansion of the money supply. They are results, not causes, of general inflation.

From Nat’l Journal, One of the Most Biased Reports Seen in Some Time

-By Warner Todd Huston

Once in a while a purported news report is so biased that it simply must be highlighted. Today’s award for the most biased report goes to National Journal for its left-slanted piece on Obama’s warning to the House GOP that he will veto any budget that cancels his FCC attempt to take control of the Internet away from private industry.

In his very first paragraph for the National Journal, Josh Smith dives straight into the left side of the pool — and in at the deep end yet — by accepting the left’s premise of what the FCC’s net neutrality regulations are meant to do.

The White House threatened on Monday to veto any bill from Congress that would scuttle new rules aimed at keeping internet access free and open. (My bold)

Keeping the Internet “free and open”? That is the left’s fanciful contention of what net neutrality does, sure enough, and National Journal parroted that line as if it is a truthful, straightforward description of what the rules do.

Union Chief Tries to Steal Civil Rights Movement

-By Warner Todd Huston

A few weeks ago AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka used the Civil Rights movement as a comparison for his union work. He wanted his audience to imagine that unionism is somehow just like the struggles for equality under the law that African Americans sought in the middle of last century. This is a disgusting attempt by Trumka to steal the mantle of Civil Rights for his money-grubbing, union thuggery.

In Washington D.C. early in March Trumka tried to glom onto Martin Luther King’s legacy and apply it to union efforts to grab luxurious healthcare and pension benefits from businesses and taxpayers alike.

“April 4 [is] the day on which Martin Luther King Jr. gave his life for the cause of public collective bargaining,” he pompously said.

Not only is this simply incorrect factually it is an outrage to say that King gave his life defending unions. We all know that King fought for the basic human rights of an entire people in a nation that had cast them into second-class citizen status, not for rich pensions, unduly high wages, and free healthcare.

Roskam Statement on March Jobs Report

From the Office of Rep. Peter Roskam, (R, ILL)…

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Peter Roskam (R-IL), Chief Deputy Whip, issued the following statement after the Department of Labor released their March jobs report:

“These numbers continue to show that our economy is moving in the right direction but not recovering nearly fast enough. For the millions of Americans still out of work, today is just one more painful reminder that Washington’s rampant borrowing and spending has grown our debt, but not jobs. Yet even as the borrow, tax, and spend policies severely hurt our economy, Senate Democrats continue to put politics ahead of policy – refusing sensible spending cuts – and rooting for a shutdown.

“That spending mentality, coupled with a constant drive to raise taxes, is a recipe for sustained economic disaster. It’s evident in Illinois where major employers – most recently Caterpillar and Jimmy John’s – signal that Illinois’ new job-crushing tax increases may force them to relocate to better business environments. We can’t expect the private sector to create jobs when faced with the highest corporate tax rate in the world, a $14 trillion national debt, and the constant threat of new Washington regulations and taxes. That’s why Republicans are focused on removing barriers to job creation by stopping Washington from spending money it doesn’t have, and implementing policies like fundamental tax reform, no-cost free trade agreements, and reform of harmful bureaucrat-driven regulations.”

Mayor Daley: Failed Mayor of Failing City?

-By Warner Todd Huston

As his last year in office winds down, Mayor Richard Daley is hailed as one of the country’s most successful big city mayors. Yet the 2010 census reveals that the city lost 200,000 citizens, the city’s budget is millions in the red, and businesses are abandoning the city with alarming frequency. How this equates to success is anyone’s guess.

Steve Bartin who writes for newgeography.com, a website that tracks information about America’s demographic statistics, notes that there are only nine U.S. cities that have more than one million citizens and the 2010 census data shows that only Chicago lost population. Yet, as Bartin notes, stories across the Old Media can’t bestow enough kudos on Mayor Daley’s long tenure as Chicago’s mayor.

It isn’t just the loss of population that marks Daley as a failure, though.

Ohio Senator Brown: Card Check is Dead

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Hill newspaper has an interesting quote from Ohio Democrat Senator Sherrod Brown. He says the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), of the Card Check bill is a dead issue in the senate this year.

Senator Brown was being interviewed on WVIZ radio in Ohio when he was asked what he thought about the success of the EFCA in the Senate for the 112th Congressional session. “It’s not going to happen now,” the senator said.

If this is true then Big Labor should be extremely upset with President Obama and the Democrat leadership in congress. Will they take out their anger by withholding their enthusiastic support of Democrats in 2012?

One would think that this singular failure of the Democrats to get Big Labor’s most wished for legislation passed would be a deal breaker for labor. After all, labor has spent over $400 million in the last few years on getting Democrats elected and it seems that all that money went for no benefit to them. Labor’s loss of power has grown commensurately with its expenditure on Democrats, anyway.

Like old dogs that cant learn new tricks, though, it is likely that they will double down and try to pump more money than ever into the pockets of pliant Democrats. Like a beaten wife they keep coming back, it seems.

Rep. Peter Roskam: Want a Fresh Start?

From the office of Congressman Peter Roskam (R,IL)…

The American people gave House Republicans some very clear priorities last November, like focus on creating jobs, stop spending money we don’t have, and work to end the Democrats’ job-destroying health care law.

That is the message I heard from my district, and that is exactly what I am working on in Washington.

When the Democrats failed to pass a budget in the last Congress, House Republicans took the challenge of funding the government as an opportunity to begin our cost-cutting work. We voted to pass a long-term continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year – cutting $100 billion from the President’s budget request.

Nevada Democrats Avoiding Voters, Hiding Actions From Public, Firing People Without Cause

-By Warner Todd Huston

Once in a while a story of the sort of arrogance in government that should make every fair-minded American sick at heart comes out to show how Democrats act when have a lock on power and when they think no one is looking. This time we find an amazing amount of arrogance in Nevada, one that is obviously a violation of Thomas Jefferson’s axiom that men are not born to be ridden “booted and spurred” by government but are free men. This government arrogance is truly as un-American as can be.

There are many instances of Democrat arrogance, of course. Like when North Carolina Democrat Congressman Bob Etheridge Democrat Al Green hectored a Washington Times reporter about the KKK (when it was Democrats that created the terror group in the first place), or when Congressman Charlie Rangel stormed out of an ethics hearing after being convicted on 11 counts because, well, he was incensed that anyone had the temerity to call him on his perfidy. Well, there are just too many to cover fully.

Chuck Muth of Citizen Outreach has the outrageous story of a lowly legislative aide fired for no reason whatever because a public record email was released to the public. Imagine the people thinking that they have a right to see the official emails of their own government officials! The gall of those voters!

Slate Says Detroit ‘Needs’ Anti-Christian, America-Slamming Statue

-By Warner Todd Huston

For some strange reason the left-wing Internet site Slate.com thinks that the City of Detroit needs a statue erected to an anti-Christian, anti-American pop icon. That’s right, Slate thinks that Detroit needs to diss Jesus, slam capitalism, and attack the United States of America as an evil, violent nation. Strange recommendation for a city that literally drove America’s capitalist success story, isn’t it?

Well that is precisely what Slate is suggesting in an entertainment feature about raising a Motor City statue to the Hollywood sci fi movie character Robocop. After all, the Robocop movie was a purposeful slam on the United States and Christianity, not some celebration of her genius. This is exactly what the film’s director has said numerous times. Strange that Slate wants to use a character that presents what it claims is bad about America as something worthy enough to which to build a memorial.

For Slate Patrick Cassels, a 20-something actor, “Internet enthusiast,” and entertainment writer, announced his support of the statue to the violence-soaked movie icon mostly because it is an attack on “Regonomics” and corporations. But, as if supporting a paean to Marxism isn’t grating enough for building a statue in an American city, he spends no time at all on the anti-Christian theme of the movie.

Why Did 17th District’s Schilling Vote For 2 Pro-Union Amendments?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Newly minted Republican Representative Bobby Schilling from Illinois’ 17th district recently voted in favor of two pro-union amendments in Congress and the votes have caused some folks to go scratching their heads in trying to figure out why he did it.

Schilling ran as the business-oriented candidate against long-time Democrat incumbent Phil Hare, so his two pro-union votes are odd in light of his late campaign rhetoric. So, the Quad-City Times contacted Schilling’s office to find out what was going on.

Schilling’s office replied that one of the votes was simply a mistake. But the second vote Schilling stands up for unapologetically.

Just Can’t Win Dept: Unions Honor Traitor Republicans, Dems Call Unions Traitors

-By Warner Todd Huston

Traitors to the right of them, traitors to the left of them, traitors in front of them… behind them, around them within them… in the they-just-can’t-win department, unions held a soiree for the traitor Republicans that voted in favor of some of the pro-union provisions in last week’s temporary budget and their pals in the donkey party were heehawing in rage to beat the band over the whole thing. The news is quite revealing in a number of ways, really.

On March 10 Politico reported that 15 labor groups held a little “thank you” party on Capitol Hill for those Republicans that voted in favor of the few pro-union amendments to the CR. Only those Republicans that voted in favor of the unions were invited.

Of the pro-union amendments, one would have repealed the Davis Bacon prevailing wage law and the second would have prohibited the federal government from observing project labor agreements (PLAs). The latter failed by a 210 to 210 tie vote. Some Republicans claimed that they voted in favor of the PLA amendment by accident due to the flurry of amendments offered in a short space of time before the votes came due.

Democrats on the Hill were not amused by the union’s reaching out to the GOP, though.

Clinton Blasts Obama’s Foot Dragging on Oil Drilling Permits

-By Warner Todd Huston

Interestingly at the end of last week during the IHS CERAWeek conference held in Houston, Texas, former President Bill Clinton said that Obama’s constant delays on issuing offshore oil drilling permits was “ridiculous.” With this one might be able to claim that Bill Clinton is a “drill, baby, drill” booster, just like Sarah Palin!

Politico is reporting that Bill Clinton agreed with fellow speaker former President George W. Bush on many of his points concerning the oil and gas industry and agreed that the hurdles that Obama’s government have been thrown up before them are ill advised.

“Bush said all the things you’d expect him to say” on oil and gas issues, said Jim Noe, senior vice president at Hercules Offshore and executive director of the pro-drilling Shallow Water Energy Security Coalition. But Clinton added, “You’d be surprised to know that I agree with all that,” according to Noe and others in the room…

Clinton said there are “ridiculous delays in permitting when our economy doesn’t need it,” according to Noe and others.

ILL Gov. Quinn Signs the Boot Out Internet Companies Law

-By Warner Todd Huston

Illinois’ Democrat Governor Pat Quinn has signed the so-called Mainstreet Fairness Bill brought to him by the Illinois General Assembly. The bill forces all Internet companies to charge Illinois’ 6.25% sales tax whether they are based in the state or not.

Quinn signed the bill in the last few days before it would have gone into force anyway.

The nation’s largest Internet-based business, Amazon, com, said it would cut ties with all its affiliates in Illinois if the bill became law. No word if they are following through on that threat, yet, but Amazon has cut ties in some states that have instituted similar laws — though it has stayed in other states that have done so, New York in particular.

Several Illinois-based Internet companies have warned the state that if the bill became law they would pull up stakes and leave the state.

Union Abuses in Wisconsin

From the office of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker

Madison— Today Governor Walker’s office released more specific examples and new details to show how collective bargaining fiscally impacts government and how reforming collective bargaining can improve government.

A Year’s Worth of Pay for 30 Days of Work

Under the Green Bay School District’s collectively bargained Emeritus Program, teaches can retire and receive a year’s worth of salary for working only 30 days over a three year period. This is paid in addition to their already guaranteed pension and health care payouts.

At the average annual salary for a Green Bay teacher of $51,355, this amounts to a daily rate of pay of $1,711.83, or an hourly rate of $213.98. Since most retiring teachers receive higher than average salary, these amounts are, in practice, much higher.

Wisc. Democrat Tells Workers Pay Union Dues or Lose Your Job

-By Warner Todd Huston

You can only serve one master and Democrats have chosen unions over the people. Proof of this is once again seen in the post by Bryan Preston of Pajamas Media where we find a Democrat lawmaker from Wisconsin who has announced that if you don’t want to pay dues to his union masters, why, then you should expect not to work in Wisconsin.

State Rep. Nick Milroy is the Democratic state representative from Wisconsin’s 73rd assembly district. He was on America’s Radio News with anchors Chris Salcedo and Lori Lundin. Salcedo pointed out that union membership was split by their votes in 2010, 49% for Democrats and 47% for Republicans, nearly an even split. But unions donated 93% of their total contributions to Democrats in 2010, and 7% to Republicans or others. The question was asked if the assemblyman could understand why Republicans were not in favor of having tax payer funded dues go to fund Democrat campaigns? The assemblyman contended that public employees can opt out of the unions. But when pressed about how even those that opt out must pay union dues, the assemblyman suggested that those people that didn’t want to be part of a union could find other work.

Get that, folks? As far as this union bought and paid for politician is concerned, if you don’t want to support unions expect to lose your ability to work in Wisconsin.

Head on over to Bryan Preston’s page and hear the outrageous audio of this radio appearance.

Why Did Rep. Paul Ryan Vote for Destructive Union Giveaway?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Wisconsin’s Republican Representative Paul Ryan is one of the most well known budget hawks in Congress today. Yet seeming to defy that reputation last week Ryan voted against putting a halt to a budget bloating union giveaway. So what happened?

The amendment was an effort to end project labor agreements on federal construction projects in 2011. This is the sort of thing one would think that every Republican would naturally vote for. Yet the final vote left the tally standing at a tie which meant the measure failed to pass. Twenty-six Republicans voted against this good amendment, Ryan being one of them.

Roskam Urges Democrats to Join in Spending Cuts While Majority of Dems Vote Against Pelosi on Cuts

-By Warner Todd Huston

Significantly 104 House Democrats voted in favor of the GOP led temporary budget plan that is now on its way to the Senate. This majority of House Dems voted against former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D, Calif.) who voted against the cuts. Even Dem. Number two man Steny Hoyer (D, Maryland.) voted in favor of the GOP’s continuing Resolution budget plan.

The remaining moderate Democrats that were not swept from Congress in the 2010 midterms are worried that Pelosi is marginalizing herself by catering to the far left and not trying to appeal to the centrist voters that fled for the GOP.

On Tuesday I spoke to House Majority Chief Deputy Whip Congressman Peter Roskam (R, Illinois) and he said that this vote was an important first step toward a more fiscally responsible budget. It was also important for the legitimacy of the GOP led House, too. “Imagine how the media would be spinning this if we didn’t take this step toward cuts,” he said.
