Roskam to Deliver Economic Speech At City Club of Chicago Tuesday

From the office of Congressman Peter Roskam (Ill., 6th District)..

BLOOMINGDALE – Majority Chief Deputy Whip Peter Roskam (IL-6) will deliver an economic speech at the City Club of Chicago this coming Tuesday, February 1st, at 12:30 pm CT. Roskam, a member of the influential Ways & Means Committee, will outline what House Republicans are doing to ensure the 112th Congress is a “cut-and-grow” Congress that eliminates wasteful spending and cuts harmful regulations, enabling private sector job growth. Roskam will offer a clear alternative to the job-destroying policies that Democrats are implementing both in Washington and in Illinois – on taxes, healthcare, trade and more.

Chico Blasts Rahm Tax at Local Barbershop

From the Gery Chico for Chicago Mayor campaign…

(CHICAGO) Visiting a Hyde Park barbershop that could potentially be hit by Rahm Emanuel’s haphazard plan to raise taxes, mayoral candidate Gery Chico again criticized the Rahm Tax as one of the largest expansions of the sales tax in city history at the absolute worst time.

“Need a plumber? Pay the Rahm Tax. Need a taxi? Pay the Rahm Tax. Need to park your car? Pay the Rahm Tax,” Gery Chico said. “If Rahm Emanuel gets his way, we will all pay the Rahm Tax.”

Chico pledges 2,000 new police officers by end of first term

From the Gery Chico for Chicago Mayor campaign..

(CHICAGO) Mayoral candidate Gery Chico rolled out a five-point plan to crack down on crime today that would strengthen police presence in Chicago neighborhoods, expand community policing and tackle gang violence. At a press conference in Marquette Park, within Chicago’s 8th Police District where the city’s index crime rate is the highest, Chico vowed to put 2,000 more officers on the street by the end of his first term in office.

Noting the increase in violence against police officers as an indication of a dangerous indifference to the law, Chico said protecting the citizens is the mayor’s most important job.

Rahmin’ It Home, Emanuel Stays on the Chicago Mayor Ballot

-By Warner Todd Huston

At last, the question of whether Rahm Emanuel should stay on the ballot has been settled once and for all. The Illinois Supreme Court has unanimously ruled that the Appellate Court’s decision to throw Rahm off the ballot was a “novel standard” without “any foundation in Illinois Law.” Therefore, Rahm Emanuel is eligible to run for election in the Chicago Mayor’s race.

The question arose when attorney Burt Odelson charged that Rahm Emanuel did not satisfy the residency requirement for a candidate. Chicago election law requires that a candidate for office must have lived in Chicago for a year before appearing on an election ballot.

Odelson claimed that since Emanuel lived in Washington for the last two years he did not satisfy the one year residency requirement. Two courts disagreed with the charge but the third, the Appellate Court, agreed throwing the whole city into a tizzy for the last several days.

Gery Chico for Chicago Mayor Ad: ‘Proven’

From the Gery Chico for Chicago Mayor campaign…

(CHICAGO) Mayoral candidate Gery Chico began airing a new TV ad today highlighting his plan to crack down on crime and fight gang violence in Chicago neighborhoods. The new ad – “Proven”- is Chico’s third to air as part of a robust television campaign. The ad features Chico’s recent endorsement by Chicago police officers and Chico’s pledge to put more police on the street and expand community policing.

In the past week, Chico was endorsed by Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2 in addition to the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge 7. Chico has also been backed by the Mexican American Police Organization, the Latin American Police Association, and the Chicago Police Sergeants Association.

Quinn’s Pension Mess

From John Bambenek…

Last night the Governor’s office confirmed what many have suspected, that the Illinois pension systems are the subject of an SEC investigation. You can read the Wall Street Journal article on the subject.

With our pensions systems not only falling below 50% funding, but selling assets to keep the lights on, this is disturbing news. The best guess estimate I have is that the pension debt for the state alone is around $140 to $150 BILLION dollars. And despite the massive tax hike, no real work has been done to stabilize these funds. At this rate, they will be insolvent and unable to pay benefits by 2015.

Like many of you, I was appalled at the job-killing tax hikes that were passed in the final hours of the last legislative session. What was worse is that not only was spending not cut, they actually expanding state spending. The so-called “spending caps” are illusory at best for two reasons: it does not limit spending out of “special funds” and the spending caps are set higher than even the most optimistic estimates of the revenue that we will have.

Roskam Discusses No-Cost Job Creation At Ways & Means FTA Hearing

From the Office of Congressman Peter Roskam (Ill., 6th District)…

Roskam: “We need to make decisions moving forward that try and create an environment where worldwide American companies – or little American companies – are in the best possible footing to be competitive and dynamic. And that is no cost job creation.”

WASHINGTON – The Ways & Means Committee held a hearing today on the pending Free Trade Agreements with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea and how they will create U.S. jobs. Below are the highlights of Rep. Roskam’s remarks at the hearing. Chief Deputy Whip Roskam is a leader on efforts to spur no-cost job creation through free trade, including having made visits to all three nations — Panama, South Korea and Colombia — with pending trade agreements.

Poetic Justice for Rahm

-By Dan Proft

First Keith Olbermann was taken off the air and now Rahm Emanuel has been taken off the ballot. It has been like an infusion of vegetables into the diet of a body politic suffering from left-wing induced acidosis.

In the Rahm case, it is up to the seven members of the Illinois State Supreme Court to maintain our newfound homeostasis.

The state’s high court should end Rahm’s fraudulent candidacy.

Chicago Firefighters Endorse Chico for Mayor

From the Gery Chico for Chicago Mayor campaign…

(CHICAGO) Mayoral candidate Gery Chico was endorsed today by Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2. Standing with Chico at a union hall on the southwest side, Chicago Firefighters Union President Tom Ryan said Chico’s proven track record of delivering city services and balancing city budgets make him the best candidate to be the next mayor.

“After examining the entire roster of candidates and their respective track records, we determined that nobody in this race has the relevant experience of delivering essential city services that Gery Chico possesses,” said Tom Ryan, president of Chicago Firefighters Local 2. “Gery is a strong, capable leader who understands the critical work that Chicago’s firefighters perform. We are confident he will be a fair mayor and he will be a mayor who puts the safety of Chicagoans first.”

Chico has made public safety a top priority as a candidate for mayor. As mayoral chief of staff, Chico worked to ensure Chicago’s firefighters had a strong voice at City Hall. Chico is the only candidate with executive leadership experience in various municipal governments, having balanced more than 15 budgets during his public service career.

“Chicago has the best fire department in the United States of America. I am humbled to receive the support of the heroes who put their lives on the line to protect Chicagoans every single day. Our firefighters personify what public service should be about – hard work and helping people,” Gery Chico said. “As mayor, I will work with our firefighters to ensure Chicago is safe and our citizens are protected.”

Firefighters Union Local 2 represents more than 5,000 active members. Chico has also been endorsed by several other public safety groups such as the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge 7, the Latin American Police Association, the Mexican American Police Organization, and the Chicago Police Sergeants Association.

Latest on Emanuel’s Quest to be Chicago’s Mayor

-By Warner Todd Huston

Two pieces of news in the storied quest by Rahm Emanuel to get on the ballot to run for mayor of the City of Chicago.

First of all the courts have stopped the City of Chicago Board of Elections from printing the election ballots. The City said that it had no choice but to go forward and print ballots without Rahm Emanuel’s name on them. But the courts have said that they cannot print any ballots at all until Emanuel’s case is settled.

Secondly, the Illinois Supreme Court has announced that it will, indeed, hear Rahm’s case.

Emanuel has appealed the Appellate Court’s decision that he is ineligible to run for mayor because he did not satisfy the residency requirement by living in the city over the last year.

So this story is still ongoing. We have yet to learn if Rahm will actually be on the election ballot on February 22.

Rahm May Have until Feb. 15 To File as Write In Candidate

-By Warner Todd Huston

As reported earlier, Rahm Emanuel has been thrown off the ballot by a decision by an Illinois Appellate Court stating that Emanuel did not satisfy the residency requirement since he did not live in Chicago over the last year. This presents several major problems for Emanuel’s candidacy.

First of all, it seems pretty sure that his name will not be actually printed on the ballot no matter what the Ill. Supreme Court does with this case. The ballot printing deadline is supposed to be next Monday, January 31 and it is highly doubtful that the Ill. Supreme Court can hear the case and make a decision in time to get his name printed on the ballot.

But, while it seems highly likely that his name won’t actually be printed on the ballot, Emanuel might just have enough time to register as a write-in candidate.

BREAKING: Rahm Emanuel OFF The Chicago Ballot for Mayor

-By Warner Todd Huston

An appellate Court has decided that Rahm Emanuel did not satisfy the residence requirement in order to qualify to run for Chicago mayor. The court has ruled that Emanuel be removed from the ballot in the coming election which is only a month away.

Emanuel will certainly take this case to the Illinois Supreme Court with the hopes that they can get an expedited case.

Rahm had won two other cases in lower courts. The Chicago Board of Elections and a Cook County court sided with Emanuel in previous decisions.

This will make the mayor’s race a very different animal at this point. This gives Gery Chico and Carol Moseley Braun the room to really ramp up their campaigns.

UPDATE

The Gery Chico camp has released a quick statement on this news:

“From day one, Gery Chico’s campaign has been about putting Chicagoans back to work, making our neighborhoods safer and giving our children the education they deserve.

“Today’s news is a surprise but it will not impact how we run our campaign. Gery will continue to work for every vote and lay out his plans to take Chicago in a whole new direction.”

Chicago Media Ignores African-American Rally Against Same-Sex Marriage

-By Warner Todd Huston

I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised that a rally held by a coalition of Chicago-area black pastors that gathered to warn Illinois against same-sex marriage and civil unions was ignored by the Old Media in Chicago. Still, as unsurprising as it it, it’s a bit galling that this event went unreported on.

The Illinois Family Institute posted a January 19 article on the snubbing by the Old Media that charges the Chicago media with an anti-Christian bias. It’s nearly impossible to deny the charge, too.

The press conference was held to call upon Illinois to oppose SB 1716, a civil unions bill now being considered 9n the state capitol in Springfield. But their conference was completely ignored. Worse than ignored, some media outlets were there yet all stories were killed by the bosses back at the studios and newspapers from which they came. So, this story was not just ignored, it was suppressed.

John Garrido is currently a Chicago Policeman but he wants to be your 45th Ward Alderman. He is running against long-time Alderman Pat Levar. (Skip to the bottom of this entry to see his current schedule of appearances)

Garrido’s basic platform is as follows:

  • Actually read city ordinances and raise common sense questions before voting on them;
  • Demand resources for public safety by properly staffing and equipping the Chicago Police and Fire Departments;
  • Speak out against selling off any more of our precious assets like they did with our parking meters and the skyway;
  • Be an advocate for small businesses who can bring jobs and revenue to our neighborhoods;
  • Never vote for a tax increase, but instead demand we properly manage our resources;
  • Welcome citizen interaction and work closely with neighborhood associations to rebuild and develop our Ward.

Rahm Emanuel ignores Hard Truth about Freddie Mac

An ‘Open Letter to the DuPage County GOP’ Protesting Sen. Scott Brown Visit?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Here is an interesting note from Frank Napolitano of the DuPage Conservatives. Apparently, the DuPage Conservatives are none too happy that a mushy-middleman like Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown is coming to speak to the conservative heart of collar counties.

I’d certainly agree with Mr. Napolitano that Scott Brown is in no way a conservative. I can’t imagine anyone mistaking him as one, either. He’s no more conservative than, say, oh, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney happens to be. I guess the main difference between Brown and Romney is that Brown admits to being a mushy-middleman whereas Romney is one, but won’t admit it. But… well… back to the subject…

Mr. Napolitano is wondering why Brown is speaking before an otherwise pretty conservative area of our fair state? I have to say, I wonder the same thing.

Rahm’s Operative and Union Each Trying to Buy Chicago City Council

-By Warner Todd Huston

A political operative tied directly to Rahm Emanuel has raised $1 million to back Emanuel friendly candidates for City Council, reports The New York Times. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is investing over $2 million also to buy candidates that favor their issues. Both are struggling to buy a City Council loyal to them in hopes of emulating outgoing Mayor Daley’s lock on power.

The Emanuel effort is being led by former Daley aide and Emanuel congressional campaign manager Greg Goldner. Goldner is grandiosely calling his fundraising effort For a Better Chicago. By “better” he means for a Chicago that will be at Rahm Emanuel’s beck and call.

Amusingly — nay perhaps insultingly — Goldner is insisting that his new effort has no connection with Rahm Emanuel. Emanuel’s campaign has also said that For a Better Chicago is not connected to his campaign.

… And I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

Roskam Votes To Rescue Economy From Job-Destroying Healthcare Bill

From the office of Congressman Peter Roskam (Ill., 6th Dist.)…

Rep. Peter Roskam: “[Americans] understand that what has to happen is that businesses have to be able to thrive, and to hire, and to grow and be dynamic. If we repeal this and replace this with the type of thoughtful healthcare initiative that is going to be forthcoming, I think we will do a world of service to everybody that we’re trying to help, and that is to change this economy so that people want to hire again.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tonight, the House of Representatives voted 245 – 189 to pass H.R. 2, repealing the Democrats job-destroying Healthcare bill. Earlier today, Congressman Peter Roskam (R-IL), the Chief Deputy Whip of the House Republican Majority, released the following video of him speaking on the House floor, and in his office, in favor of repealing the healthcare bill:

“I’m Congressman Peter Roskam, and I’m in my office here in the United States Capitol getting ready to go upstairs to the House floor.

“It’s a historic day in Washington D.C. It’s a day that is a reflection of all of the work, all of the energy and all of the speaking out that’s happened for the past year essentially. Without question the American public have said, ‘we don’t want this healthcare law jammed down our throats because it’s having an adverse impact on job creation, it’s making healthcare costs go up – let’s drop this thing.’

Newspaper Ignores Facts in Teacher’s ‘Vagina Dance’ Song Controversy

-By Warner Todd Huston

It isn’t just national issues that the Old Media misreports. As we focus on the “big” stories of the day, we often overlook the local scene and the left-wing excuse for “reporting,” therefrom. This is a perfect example of that.

Imagine you are a sophomore in high school and your sex ed teacher forces you to prance about your classroom singing and dancing to “The Vagina Dance” in a puerile attempt to teach the parts and functions of the female sex organ. Worse, imagine you are a male student in a classroom of such an unhinged teacher? Well, we don’t have to imagine it too hard because this exact situation has happened in a classroom in the Chicago, Illinois suburbs. But don’t worry. Chicago’s Old Media is all about reporting this incident honestly. Well, if honestly means to ignore relevant facts and shore up support for the out of control teacher and smooth things over for the school, that is.

Early this month, parent Robert King, whose son goes to Crystal Lake’s Prairie Ridge High School, complained to school authorities over the inappropriate teaching methods of health teacher Jacqulyn Levin. As a teaching tool Levin used “The Vagina Dance,” a song replete with dance steps and arm movements, and required her entire co-ed class to participate in it – all to the tune of The Hokey Pokey, no less. As it happens King’s son was uncomfortable being required to prance about the room, arms emulating fallopian tubes, and singing about vaginas, so the parents complained.

Update on the Tax Increase

From the Raise Your Hand for Illinois Public Education Coalition…

Thanks to all of you who helped to send over 5,500 emails via our “No Taxation Without Education” campaign. Unfortunately, we got taxation without education and just a “promise” from our Governor to include $250 million for education in this year’s budget. Of course, we won’t believe that until it’s in writing. There was some support for increased money for education in the state senate, led by the Black Caucus, but we were told in Springfield that Mike Madigan and the House were not supporting additional money for education or anything else and wanted new revenue to go towards paying off our roughly $15 billion in debt and $8 billion in late bills, and that’s what we got. There was another opportunity for education money through the cigarette tax which would have generated $377 million for education but this was voted down in the House as well with only 51 legislators in support, and 60 votes needed to pass. While this isn’t the outcome we wanted, this $6 billion in new revenue to pay down our debt will likely result in fewer cuts to CPS next year. Clearly, we can’t be content with this and we need to continue to do everything we can to advocate for improved and sustainable funding for education in Illinois.

As you all know, we are currently 49th in the nation in terms of state spending on education. Our state covers roughly 30% of the cost of educating a child, as compared to about 50% on average. Local municipalities are left to fund the rest through property taxes, resulting in unsustainable and inequitable funding.

Ex-Black Panther, Current Politician Bobby Rush Uses MLK, Giffords to Call for Gun Control

-By Warner Todd Huston

Bobby Rush always did have a lot of stones. He went from being an outlaw and criminal member of the Black Panthers in Chicago to being a legitimate, elected Congressman from the self-same city. Now Rush is hiding behind both the crime in Arizona and Martin Luther Kin, Jr. in order to push his anti-constitutional gun grabbing agenda.

Yep, a lot of stones.

Rush’s office published a blog post on The Hill’s Congressional blog section for January 16. It isn’t likely that Rush himself wrote the thing, of course, but it is published under his name and carries his imprimatur, so it doesn’t matter who wrote it. What matters is that Rush is using MLK for cover for a gun grab. What matters is that he, like so many other left-wingers, is using Gabrielle Giffords’ shooting to serve his political agenda.

Happy New Years from Downtown Chicago Democrats

From the office of State Senator Chris Lauzen (25th District)…

Majorities in 99 out of 102 counties voted for his opponent, however Governor Pat Quinn declares that he has a mandate to raise our taxes. If the State of Illinois spent what we currently sacrifice in taxes prudently and ethically, the Governor and his enablers in the Legislature might be able to make their case against my assessment that we are “taxed enough already”.

Illinois Medicaid eligibility levels substantially higher than averages, grants for favorite pork projects like Oswego Park District’s purchase and bulldozing of perfectly good and property-tax-paying homes, and unsustainable public employee pensions are all examples of cuts to unnecessary government spending that have not been made. It is no secret that public employee unions provided the money and manpower to get Quinn elected; now “to the victors to the spoils” . . . at your expense . . . during already difficult times for most taxpaying families in Illinois.

During the election, Pat Quinn claimed that he had cut state spending by $3 Billion. This is false – – some people would say it is a deliberate campaign lie. According to a report (that I would be happy to provide you) that his own Budget Office sent last summer to New York bankers and bond rating agencies, Quinn has actually increased spending $1 Billion. I would think that he would be embarrassed by a $4 B error, and that the Establishment Press would scold him every time he lied. Did you know that Quinn promised the state’s employee union that there will be no layoffs for them for the next two years? He did accept their endorsement and did cash their campaign contribution check.

Crook County, Illinois: Fake State Rep Casts Deciding Vote to Raise Our Taxes

-By Warner Todd Huston

She didn’t know anything about the bill. She never read it. She hadn’t been given any cheat sheets, facts sheets, talking points, or mass emails on the bill. But in true, corrupt Chicago fashion, she voted “yes” on it just as she was told to do by her corrupt party bosses.

Even worse, she was only a “state rep” because someone told her to drive to the state capitol for a week to “be” one. As Andy Shaw joked, Williams became the “somebody that somebody sent.”*

It is business as usual for Illinois, the most corrupt state in the Union.

You see, fake State Rep Kathy Moore of Lincoln Park was drafted by Illinois Democratic Party bosses to fill out the last week of elected State Rep John Fritchey’s term in office. Fritchey was elected to a spot on the Crook County Board and left his state rep seat to take that chair last November. So, Democrats fretted that Fritchey’s 11th District seat would be empty during this important vote to wildly raise everyone’s taxes.
