CTA Desperation Days in Progress

-By Larry Sand

Cindy Sheehan, Code Pink and a band of fringe groups have joined the California Teachers Association protest in Sacramento

We are now in the midst of California Teachers Association’s desperation week or as they are calling it “state of emergency.” At the crux of the issue is that Governor Jerry Brown will unveil his revised budget on May 16, and deep cuts to the K-12 education budget could mean widespread teacher layoffs as early as next month. Californians are getting heavy doses of union demagoguery this week, as Brown works to forge a deal with Republicans who oppose any tax hikes.

As I wrote recently, there are many other ways to solve educational budgetary problems without raising taxes. However, none of my proposed solutions are acceptable to CTA because the union insists on maintaining the status quo lest its power be threatened in any way.

As CTA was making final plans for their week long protest, someone crashed their party — none other than Cindy I-am-sorry-but-if-you-believe-the-newest-death-of-OBL-you’re-stupid Sheehan decided to cash in on CTA’s event, figuring she could tag on to a group of sympathetic fellow travelers. (Ms. Sheehan, lest you forget, is a peace activist best known for her for obsessive hatred of George Bush, who set up camp near the former president’s Texas home to protest our involvement in the Iraq War.) Then, the radical Code Pink group and a few other fringe groups joined Ms. Sheehan.

Defusing the Illinois Pension Bomb, One Letter at a Time‏

How to reform the public employee pension system is the most crucial question facing Illinois today. The state has an $86 billion unfunded pension liability, and a recent study by the Pew Center ranked Illinois’s pensions as the worst funded in the nation. Bold action is needed to balance the state’s pension funds while keeping Illinois from falling deeper into an economic death spiral.

The public employee pension system is unsustainable. It must be fixed. We need your help now.

As you read this, a pension reform bill is being debated Springfield: HB149. This bill would begin to create equity government workers and the taxpayers who fund their salaries. Legislators on both sides of the aisle are coming together, and with your help, we believe we have a chance at passing one of the most important reforms in Illinois history. That’s why I’m asking you to write to your local newspaper in support of reforming the pension system.

Writing a letter to the editor is an easy way to reach thousands of your neighbors on this important issue.

Union Thug Teacher Hopes Opponents Get Roughed Up by Teamsters

-By Warner Todd Huston

Like any union thug, when confronted by someone that simply won’t bend to union will, why, the first thing they resort to is violence — or at least threats of same — and this union thug in Washington D.C. is no different than any other.

Caught at a protest arranged by unions to attack school choice, the cameras of some Freedom Works folks found a typical unionista that hoped the Teamsters would “kick the asses” of those that dare oppose the unions. She wished violence to descend upon anyone that wants kids to have a better education.

Naturally, this union creep also resorted to foul language.

Typical union thug.

Totalitarianism For Tots: School lunches are just a start

-By Daniel Clark

The prohibition on bagged lunches at Chicago’s Little Village Academy elementary school was not the result of Michelle Obama’s culinary reign of terror, as was widely assumed when it was first reported by the Chicago Tribune. In reality, the ban had been unilaterally enacted six years ago by principal Elsa Carmona. So, although there may be one little tyrant presiding over one little school, it is not indicative of a broader, nationwide campaign. Or is it?

Carmona’s edict has just become newsworthy because of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, signed by President Obama in December. That law has imposed far stricter nutritional standards on school lunches, while at the same time rejecting all standards of edibility. Because the kids won’t want to eat the gruesome grub, Little Village’s forbidding them from bringing lunches from home may lead to their refusing to eat lunch at all.

While touting the new rules, the White House posted a sample of a weekly elementary school lunch menu online. If we fed many of these same items to the terrorist detainees at Guantanamo, the ACLU and Amnesty International would scream brutality, and for once they’d have a point.

Teachers Unions Continue Their Assault on School Choice

-By Larry Sand

CTA and CFT sponsor legislation that imperils charter schools in California.

On April 27, Rasmussen Reports released the results of a poll which addresses American voters’ sentiments about our public schools. Some of the more interesting findings are:

  • 72% say taxpayers are not getting their money’s worth from our schools, while only 11% think we are.
  • By a margin of 41-34 (25% were unsure), those polled said that spending more money on education will not improve student performance.
  • 61% said that public education had become worse over the last ten years.

Given the citizenry’s increasing disaffection with our traditional public schools, charter schools would appear to be a good alternative. Charter schools are public schools which are allowed to operate outside the boundaries of costly multilayered district bureaucracies and piles of restrictive union mandated rules and regulations.

The Intersection of U Street and Main Street Does Not Exist

-By Larry Sand

The teachers unions’ radical agenda alienates them from the American mainstream

As I mentioned in last week’s post, during the week of May 9th, the California Teachers Association and many local unions, like the United Teachers of Los Angeles, will be taking to the streets in an attempt to convince legislators and citizens that cuts to education will not be tolerated by the unions. In other times this would be a winning strategy, but as shown by recent polls, the teachers unions are not the darlings of the public that they used to be.

While unionistas all over the country lament this loss of favor, they only need to look in their collective mirrors to understand why. They have managed to alienate too many Americans who previously had held them in a better light. The unions’ insistence on things like tenure and seniority privileges, which serve to protect only the bad apples, has begun to grate on the public. Additionally, the fact that they are tolerant of, and give outright support to extremist political causes is another reason the public is turning against them.

An example of the unions turn toward extremist politics took place last year in Los Angeles. Santee High School teacher and UTLA union rep Jose Lara took his students to Arizona on a “field trip” to protest Arizona’s new immigration law. In a YouTube video, Lara is seen standing in front of a wall-to-wall mural featuring a who’s who of murderous revolutionaries, including Ho Chi Minh, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, while proudly displaying the motto Patria o Muerte, Venceremos!!! (Fatherland or Death, We Shall Overcome!!!). UTLA, while not a sponsor of the Memorial Day weekend trip, had no comment on Mr. Lara’s attempt to turn his students into an army of radical activists.

Calif Union Chief Says You Taxpayers are Selfish and Full of ‘Envy’

-By Warner Todd Huston

You taxpayers should be ashamed of yourselves, says Art Pulaski, executive secretary-treasurer of the California Labor Federation. You big, selfish jerks should be happy to pay the taxes that gives government employees all healthcare practically for free and allows them to retire at 50 with their comfortable 40-year-long retirement pensions that pay government union members twice what you’ll ever see in your golden years.

I mean, who do you taxpayers think you are, anyway?

Interestingly enough, even the soft-headed, left-leaning voters of California seem to be getting sick and tired of the freebies give government union members at this point.

A recent L.A.Times poll found that Californians are about done with the ritzy government employees sweet deals and are becoming tired of being the union’s sugar daddy. They are in increasing numbers desirous of caps on the spiraling unearned government union pensions.

The Democrat Caused Pension Bomb About to Destroy Our States

-By Warner Todd Huston

A few weeks ago I wrote that unions have driven every state budget into a hole from which it isn’t likely the states can easily dig themselves out. I did not at that time reference the Pew report on the pensions mess and I want to revisit it here.

On April 5, I said, “The worst mess that states are in is because government unions have been handed luxurious and unsustainable pensions and healthcare plans by those very Democrat politicians that unions have paid off to do so. Again all at the expense of the suffering taxpayers.” The Pew report shores this up thoroughly.

In fact, the Pew report from early April 2010 even understates the problem, not because of any bias but because the stats that they used were taken from stats assembled in 2008 because that was the last year where full records had been compiled. Further, we must remember that these stats also came before the market crash ushered in during the age of Obama.

Wisc. Democrats Use Recall Petition Info to Harass Voters

-By Warner Todd Huston

In yet another union-styled outrage, Democrats backed by union thugs in Wisconsin are using the personal information of voters found on recall petitions to harass them because they signed a petition to recall Green Bay Democrat State Senator Dave Hansen.

Over the last few weeks thousands of Wisconsin voters signed a recall petition in Green Bay to recall Hansen and when voters sign such petitions they must give their address and phone numbers so that authorities can verify the voter’s signature in order to approve the petition. Now it seems that the Wisconsin Democrat Party has gotten hold of these petitions and have begun a telephone harassment campaign against the individual voters that signed the petitions.

The Wisconsin GOP has discovered this disgusting campaign and have found that the Democrats are using a fake phone number and a fake caller ID in order to get voters to answer the phone only to be harangued about having signed the recall petition.

CTA Days of Desperation Coming to Your Town

-By Larry Sand

Fearful of taking a financial hit, California Teachers Association will be taking to the streets and declaring a “state of emergency.” But I have some questions for them when the demagoguery begins.

With California in a world of fiscal trouble and many people sick and tired of the unrealistic perks and benefits gained by collective bargaining, the California Teachers Association figured they had to take action. Their first idea was to go on a rampage the week of May 9.
The original plan included such disruptive strategies as…

VIDEO: Kloppenburg Makes Fool of Herself With Wisconsin Recount

-By Warner Todd Huston

So far, other than the 10,000 likely fraudulent Kloppenburg-favoring votes from the Madison area, there doesn’t really seem to be any compelling evidence of vote fraud in the recent election for Wisconsin’s Supreme Court race. David Prosser won by some 7,000 votes. Still, his challenger, JoAnne Kloppenburg, is demanding a recount no matter how absurd her request is.

In fact, she herself revealed how silly her position is with a recent TV press conference. As painful as it is to watch, Kloppenburg was flummoxed when asked if she truly believes she’s still the winner…

$5.4 Million Spent on Wisconsin Supreme Court Race

-By Warner Todd Huston

It is an amazing amount of money to be spent on a mere state supreme court race but this one was for all the marbles in Wisconsin as far as both sides were concerned, so I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised. Wisconsin Democracy Campaign broke out its calculator and came up with a whopping amount of $5.4 million having been spent on the race by forces outside the candidate’s themselves.

“The special interest groups,” WDC says, “spent an estimated $2.7 million to support Prosser and $1.8 million to back Kloppenburg.” Even though two other high court elections outspent the 2011 effort, it is still a major amount of money to go into a state-wide election, to be sure.

I have to say, these final numbers shock me in one respect. I am shocked that unions didn’t put more into this race than they did. The unions sure spent a ton of cash in other areas in the Badger State (like the protests at the state capitol) so maybe they didn’t have the spare cash to throw at Kloppenburg’s race when push came to shove. Whatever the case, I was surprised it wasn’t more.

Indiana Democrat Fleebagger’s Hotel Bill Completely Paid for by Unions

-By Warner Todd Huston

It wasn’t long ago that Indiana Democrats fled the Hoosier state so that they could avoid doing their job in the state legislature. These Democrats self-righteously claimed that they were doing this “for the people” and insisted that they should be considered as heroes. One Indiana Democrat even claimed that his running off to Illinois to luxuriate in a resort hotel was somehow just like being a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan.

Well, after weeks and weeks of patting themselves on the back as working “for the people” we now see just who these fleebagging Democrats were really working for… and it sure as heck wasn’t “the people.”

A recent campaign finance report was released that shows that the entire $84,953.70 hotel bill at the Comfort Suites Urbana was paid for by unions. That’s right, unions.

Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice David Prosser has at last declared victory in the Wisc. Court race. He had a great quote, too:

“I presume this is my last campaign and that my fifteen minutes of celebrity will soon be over. Greta has stopped calling.”

Prosser’s opponent, the union-backed Joanne Kloppenburg has until Wednesday to file for a recount.

This is a great victory for the people of Wisconsin fighting to get their state budget under control. Unions hardest hit.

Judge Prosser Declared Winner, Left Loses BIG In Wisconsin Union Fight

-By Warner Todd Huston

A county canvas of votes for Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice is finished and the result shows that Judge David Prosser, a 12-year veteran of the courts, won reelection over his union-backed opponent.

Judge David Prosser’s total now officially stands at 752,323 votes to challenger Joanne F. Kloppenburg’s 745,007. This spread represents a 0.488% margin and at less than .5% state law provides for a recount effort that does not require a filing fee.

Prosser’s campaign issued a press release saying they were all “very excited” over the results. His challenger said that she will fall back and try to make a decision if they will bother to file for a recount.

When the Anti-Bulliers Become the Bullies

-By Larry Sand

California Teachers Association backs SB 48 – radical legislation that will reinterpret history, hurt children and cost the taxpayers money

As one who tries to keep up with the latest teacher union doings, a trip to the California Teachers Association legislative page is always illuminating. Recently, I found that the powerful teachers union testified in favor of SB 48, a bill introduced by California State Senator Mark Leno. If passed, this bill would alter the way history is taught, could psychologically damage young children while delivering a blow to the taxpayers of California.

The California Education Code as it is now written says, “Existing law requires instruction in social sciences to include a study of the role and contributions of both men and women to the development of California and the United States.” However, according to the legislative counsel, SB 48 would “require instruction (emphasis mine) in social sciences to also include a study of the role and contributions of Native Americans, African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, European Americans, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans, persons with disabilities, and other ethnic and cultural groups, to the development of California and the United States.”

Chicago School Accuses Parents of Poisoning Children

-By Warner Todd Huston

The nanny state in the people’s republic of Chicago rears its ugly head once again where a school principal has accused parents of trying to poison their own children with “unhealthy” bag lunches. And so, in her infinite wisdom, Principal Elsa Carmona had banned all lunches brought from home. I guess it’s just a coincidence that the school gets more federal money for lunches served by the school, eh?

Little Village Academy Principal Carmona, you see, is better and smarter than the vile parents of the children for whom she is the keeper… at least she thinks she is, anyway. She has determined that kids are not getting healthy lunches from parents, so she’s decided that kids can only eat the bland pabulum she serves in her school cafeteria.

Calif. Teachers Show Support For Cop Murderer

-By Warner Todd Huston

What the hell the un-American, murder-loving “teachers” in California should care about a cop-killing scumbag in Philadelphia is anyone’s guess.

Convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal is finding some support in an unusual place – at the California Federation of Teachers Convention.

Last month, delegates there passed a resolution to reaffirm their support for Mumia.

Of course, the former member of the Black Panthers who was found guilty of murdering Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner around 13th and Locust streets back in 1981.

He has been sentenced to death. His supporters argue that his trial was unfair and that he is actually a Civil Rights hero.

This murderous piece of garbage put a gun to a policeman’s head and pulled the trigger coldly and with calculation and in front of multiple witnesses.

Mumia should not be drawing breath. He should be executed and with extreme malice at that.

Yet we have these so-called teachers all the way in California coming to his support decades after his guilt has been established. And they are calling Mumia a “journalist,” worse yet.

Unions are inherently un-American.

Nat’l Teachers Union Chief Steals Reporter’s Story for Speech Without Attribution

-By Warner Todd Huston

I guess being the president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) means not having to do your own homework. Just ask AFT President Randi Weingarten. Weingarten was caught using verbatim and without attribution the work of a journalist from New York in a speech she gave a week ago.

Usually this is called plagiarism and people get fired for doing it. Apparently, though, the president of a national teachers union… a teachers union… isn’t held to the high standard that others (including students her union members supervise) are held to!

When a journalist, politician or student uses someone else’s words without attribution in a speech or a paper, it’s called plagiarism – and it’s often enough to get a journalist fired, a politician embarrassed or a student kicked out of school. In this NY1 exclusive, Education reporter Lindsey Christ reports on what happens when it’s someone who represents a million-and-a-half teachers.

The stolen words in question were part of a New York Channel 1 news report on the problems with ARIS, the New York Department of Education’s $80 million computer system. NY1 writer Lindsay Christ has a few comparisons between Weingarten’s speech and excerpts of the series of NY1 reports and the similarity is unmistakable.

Vote Fraud in Wisconsin Supreme Court Race

-By Warner Todd Huston

The leftists are at it again trying to steal the election to make sure that Judge Prosser firmly loses any recount possibility.

It appears that ballots are being illegally destroyed before they can be put into a recount in at least one county and in another the vote totals are not making much sense.

According to the initial counts, Judge Prosser lost reelection by only 204 votes to left-wing legal activist JoAnne Kloppenburg. There will naturally be a recount with a vote total this close.

BREAKING, BIG Upset: Prosser Finds 7,000 Votes in Wisconsin??

-By Warner Todd Huston

OK, folks, it seems that Waukesha County has discovered a computer error in its vote count which gives Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice David Prosser 7,000 new votes. This completely changes the game to wipe out the 200 some lead that challenger Kloppenburg had giving Prosser a big win.

Now, I am a big, big advocate of quashing voter fraud so I have to say that I think the state of Wisconsin better look at this VERY closely. The state better make 100% sure that this is a legal outcome, here.

Don’t get me wrong, I am loving the idea that Prosser won this election. But the fact is that the county that these new 7,000 votes were found in is a GOP controlled county and I just can’t rest on this until we are sure this is right.

Illinois Teachers Pay Nothing or Little into Their Pensions

-By Larry Snow

Illinois teachers qualify for a full 75 percent pension after working only 27 years. Most adults work for 27 years before they turn age 50.

Democrats want retail and construction workers to think that the majority of Illinois teachers are seriously paying into their pensions. The truth is, ordinary workers are made to do this for them, big time.

First, teachers have no Social Security taken out of their paychecks. Ordinary workers get hit with a 6.2 percent deduction for Social Security. It’s a deduction they have to pay federal and state income taxes on. Democrats gave teachers a huge loophole of not paying income taxes on any of their pension deductions. This enormous no-tax handout to teachers amounts to billions of dollars each year.

Over 51,000 of the total 132,502 teachers in Illinois contribute nothing from their K-12 paychecks into their pensions. Illinois law says it is to be 9.4 percent.

About an additional 32,000 teachers pay little into their pensions. It is 1.81 percent to be precise for these 31,956 teachers. Paying less than 2 percent is little unless you want to bamboozle ordinary working people into thinking the opposite…

NEA: We Are One. We Are Everywhere. We are at War!

-By Larry Sand

National Education Association declares war, but finding allies could be difficult

It’s hardly a secret that the National Education Association is an organization that has had its political way for the past 35 or so years. However, voters are fed up with the union’s attempts to keep a failing public education system from being reformed and having massive debt foisted on them in the form of public employee pensions. In November, the populace voted flinty governors and no-nonsense legislators into state houses all over the country.

Clearly NEA, to maintain its hegemony, must now combat the reform fires that are spreading wildly from sea to shining sea. But according to teacher union watchdog Mike Antonucci, the megaunion is indeed going to war with not as much money as they once had. “… after some 27 years of increases, NEA membership is down in 43 states. The union faces a $14 million budget shortfall, and the demand for funds from its Ballot Measure/Legislative Crises Fund is certain to exceed its supply. Even the national UniServ grants, which help pay for NEA state affiliate employees, will be reduced this year.”

So, what will the war look like?

Union Chief Tries to Steal Civil Rights Movement

-By Warner Todd Huston

A few weeks ago AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka used the Civil Rights movement as a comparison for his union work. He wanted his audience to imagine that unionism is somehow just like the struggles for equality under the law that African Americans sought in the middle of last century. This is a disgusting attempt by Trumka to steal the mantle of Civil Rights for his money-grubbing, union thuggery.

In Washington D.C. early in March Trumka tried to glom onto Martin Luther King’s legacy and apply it to union efforts to grab luxurious healthcare and pension benefits from businesses and taxpayers alike.

“April 4 [is] the day on which Martin Luther King Jr. gave his life for the cause of public collective bargaining,” he pompously said.

Not only is this simply incorrect factually it is an outrage to say that King gave his life defending unions. We all know that King fought for the basic human rights of an entire people in a nation that had cast them into second-class citizen status, not for rich pensions, unduly high wages, and free healthcare.

Indiana Democrat Fleebagger Compares Himself to Our Soldiers

-By Warner Todd Huston

There is nothing worse than some self-interested politician acting as if his partisan political agenda makes him serving his country just like our brave soldiers at war. But here we have it from Indiana’s 69th District Democrat Dave Cheatham, one of the Hoosier State Reps that ran off to Illinois to avoid doing his job at the state capitol.

But what is worse than this cretin claiming that his running off to Illinois to stay at a resort hotel for a week on the taxpayer’s dime is somehow just like being a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan is the fact that the union thugs in the audience applauded for this politician, heartily agreeing with the whole misconception!

Representative Cheatham (and isn’t it just right that his name has CHEAT in it?) was at a union meeting with Indiana’s union-sold teachers in attendance when he told the audience that he was just like our soldiers when he ran off to Illinois. Disgustingly, the teachers in attendance gleefully clapped for the man’s conceit.

So, here you have it, Representative Cheatham saying that his running off to Illinois to sit in a resort hotel is “just like” our soldiers going off to Afghanistan.

Wisconsin Union’s Boycott Likely Illegal

-By Warner Todd Huston

Government union members of AFSCME Council 24 are circulating letters to local businesses in southeast Wisconsin threatening them that if they don’t come to immediate and vocal support of government unions the businesses will be targeted for attack.

The union says it won’t be satisfied with statements of neutrality, either. An AFSCME spokesman told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that only full-throated support would keep the union from attacking businesses.

The union told businesses that if they didn’t put a sign in their store windows proclaiming their support of government unions, then the union would target the business. “Failure to do so will leave us no choice but (to) do a public boycott of your business. And sorry, neutral means ‘no’ to those who work for the largest employer in the area and are union members,” the union said in its letter.

Dane County Circuit Judge Maryann Sumi has gone back to her order to stop Gov. Scott Walker’s union bill and rewritten it in an effort to assist unions and Democrats (including her Democratic Operative son) continue to ride the gravy train at the expense of the taxpayers.

Sumi, whose entire family seems to be up to their necks in union business and Democrat Party politics, issued an order to stop Walker’s efforts to curb the ability of government unions to demand outsized benefits immediately after the bill passed the Wisconsin state legislature.

‘Taxpayer’s Champion’ Censured By Grayslake School Board

Some residents of Northeast suburban Grayslake have called Michael Carbone the “taxpayer’s champion.” But the Grayslake School Board does not ascribe to such accolades. In fact, members of the board have censured Mr. Carbone for allegedly attempting to access a password-protected school district computer without permission.

Carbone has described himself as “a watchdog for the parents and children” but it seems he is also concerned with the school district’s finances. The incident that has drawn the ire of the other board members was when Carbone tried to find out if any Grayslake teachers had called in sick so that they could attend the union rallies up in nearby Madison, Wisconsin.

Carbone told the Chicago Tribune that Superintendent Ellen Correll said 18 teachers were absent, a number Carbone says is low.

Mich. Teachers Assoc. Features Photo of Gov. Snyder as Devil on Facebook Page

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Mackinac Center for Public Policy has a devil of a story. It appears that the Michigan Education Association was hosting a photo of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder replete with bloodspatters and occult symbols making the governor out to be the devil. (See image below)

The Mackinac Center alerted the MEA about the offensive image that had been on the page since March 11 and the teachers group claimed they had no idea it was there and did not put it there themselves.

How it is that such an image can for days be on the MEA’s official Facebook page and the organization not knowing it is rather absurd.

“We do monitor our page — unfortunately, we missed this one (items move down the Facebook feed pretty quickly, so if we miss it, it can get buried fast),” Pratt said in an email. “We’ve deleted the item. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.”
