Walsh to Bean on Health Care Vote: Vote Your District Not Your Party

From the Joe Walsh for Congress campaign…

(Lake Zurich, Illinois) – 8th District Republican congressional nominee Joe Walsh today called on his liberal Democrat opponent Rep. Melissa Bean to swallow her pride and vote “No” on the Obamacare federal takeover of health care legislation nearing a vote in the House.

“For the first time in a long time Melissa Bean needs to listen to her constituents and vote her district,” said Walsh. “A government takeover of health care is absolutely the wrong approach to fix what ails with health care in America- and 8th district voters know it. Melissa Bean was not elected to represent public sector unions and march in lockstep with her party. She was elected to represent the interests of 8th district families and support policies that speak to their very real economic insecurities. This legislation will worsen the quality of care we have access to and increase unemployment,” Walsh said.

Rep. Lipinski Dem. of Illinois Says He’s a ‘No’ On Obamacare

-By Warner Todd Huston

Illinois Congressman Daniel Lipinski has confirmed to John McCormack of the Weekly Standard that he is now a “no” vote on Obama’s healthcare debacle.

Lipinski is a pro-life Democrat that is associated with the block that Bart Stupak (D, Mich.) says will vote “no” over the fact that the Obamacare plan has public funding for abortion in it.

Add Congressman Dan Lipinski of Illinois to the coalition of pro-life Democrats standing firmly with Bart Stupak in the fight over taxpayer-funding of abortion in the health care bill. Asked if the congressman is “open to voting for a health care bill that lacks the Stupak amendment,” Lipinski’s spokesman Nathaniel Zimmer replied in an email to THE WEEKLY STANDARD: “No. Congressman Lipinski will not vote for a health care bill that provides federal funding for abortion.”

Lipinski represents the 3rd Congressional District which is situated in a south central part of Cook County.

Dear Chicago Taxpayer, You Owe Us a Pension so Pay Up

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Civic Federation is reporting that every Chicago resident is on the hook for 444 percent more in unfunded retirement pension benefits to city workers than they were a decade ago.

The watchdog Civic Federation said Monday that the funding deficit for the 10 largest Chicago-area public pension funds soared from $3.4 billion in 1998 to $18.5 billion in 2008, the last year for which figures are available.

This is the fault of both politicians for spending the money instead of investing it as well as unions for “negotiating” ever higher and undeserved benefits with each new contract.

But no matter who is at fault, I’d guess that all the perpetrators imagine that the federal government should bail them out when the inevitable collapse arrives.

That way neither the unions nor the profligate democrat politicians will ever have to pay any substantive price.

Only one problem: the US government doesn’t have the cash or credit, either.

I foresee the collapse of pensions all across the county and millions of people that thought they had retirement available for them will find out that it doesn’t exist. A major mess will soon come to town and no one can prevent its arrival.

Both rank and file Democrats and their unions and politicians deserve all the pain coming their way, too.

‘Unofficial Roster’ Of the New Slate of Ill. Republican State Central Committeemen

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Illinois GOP released a list of the presumed slate of State Central Committee Members for the 2010 election cycle. they are “unofficial” because all results have yet to be certified officially but these are the results as reported by the various counties.

For those unaware, the State Central Committee is the deliberative body that decides party goals, rules, and handles the day-to-day operations of the Illinois Republican Party. It is chaired by the Ill. GOP Chairman, currently Pat Brady. (See info at the Ill. GOP website.)

2010 State Central Committee County Conventions were conducted on March 3, 2010. Results for the State Central Committee positions were unofficially reported to the State Party and these may be viewed below. Individual counties will provide their results to the Illinois State Board of Elections for certification.

Corruption in Will County, Ill. GOP, ‘That’s What Democrats Do!’

-By Warner Todd Huston

ChampionNews.net has a sad tale to tell of the recent meeting of the Will County, Illinois Republican Party. It is an example of why the Illinois GOP is not accountable to the voters in any way. In fact, it proves that many parts of the Illinois GOP isn’t even accountable to the elected committeemen!

It is the story of Committeeman Mark Batinick of Plainfield, an elected member of the Will County GOP. In this tale of woe, Batinick details how even the votes of the committeemen are ignored by the “combine” styled, powermongers of the moribund Illinois GOP.

He reveals the events surrounding the crushing defeat of Will County Central Committee member Bobbie Peterson who in a straight up vote of the Will County committeemen voted Perterson out and voted challenger Cory Singer in. The lopsided tally was around 9,000 votes for Singer and 4,000 for Peterson according to Batinick.

That seems like a pretty convincing win for Singer, right? Well, hold the boat. It seems that Will County Chairman Dick Kavanagh (just returned to his spot himself earlier this same meeting) and his pals in the combine didn’t want Mr. Singer to take his seat as the 11th District State Central Committee Member no matter how lopsided Singer’s vote was.

Illinois Dangerous ‘Presumed Consent’ Organ Donor Bill

-By Warner Todd Huston

Illinois State Senator Dale Risinger (R, Peoria) has offered a bill in Springfield that drives our society further along the path of making parts of the human body a commodity, undercutting the sacred status of human life.

SB 3613, the Presumed Donor bill, amends the Illinois Anatomical Gift Act to define all Illinois patients as “presumed donors” unless they specifically avail themselves of the opt out clause. In other words, unless you tell the government that in the case of your presumed brain death you don’t want your body parts cut out and donated to other patients, they will be cut out and given to others.

As the law stands now a potential donor has to opt in to the organ donor program in order to allow the government to authorize usage of organs in case of brain death. One must inform the state ahead of time that one will agree to donate his organs. This bill would reverse that process of consent. If SB 3613 passes all patients will be assumed to be fodder for transplants unless they’ve specifically told the state that they do not want their body parts to be parceled out to other people.

As the synopsis of the bill states: This bill, “Provides that, on and after July 1, 2012, each resident of Illinois who is of sound mind and who has attained the age of 18 years is presumed, by operation of law, to have given all of his or her body for any organ donation purposes.”

Proponents of this bill say that it will help alleviate the desperate need for donor organs and will help hundreds of patients live that might otherwise die due to their disease and lack of donor organs.

It does sound like a great idea until one begins to look at it all with a bit more logical eye. Laws like a “presumed donor” law could easily cause doctors to care less for the injured when looking to harvest organs for patients waiting transplants. And since the criteria for a transplant includes the donor’s “brain death” one is struck with abuse that such a designation could lead to.

Conservative Bob Cook Takes Lake Co. GOP Boss Slot

-By Warner Todd Huston

Congratulations goes to Bob Cook of Wauconda for being elected as the new Lake County Republican Party Chairman.

Former chair Dan Venturi withdrew his bid to keep his position after it became clear that he’d likely have lost to Cook. Venturi said withdrawing was an act of unity so that Cook could be elected unanimously.

Some grumbling about Venturi occurred when he backed Maria Rodriguez for Congress in the recent GOP primary. Instead candidate Joe Walsh handily won the 8th District primary. Venturi was considered “out of touch” by some and a pawn of House GOP leader Tom Cross by others.

For his part, though, Cook says that picking candidates in a primary is a mistake that he won’t make. As chairman, Cook says he’ll never endorse candidates in a primary.

The Daily Herald claims that Cook’s elevation to party boss “represents a growing conservative trend among party members.” I am not sure there is any state-wide evidence for that, but it is good to see conservatives finally being represented in the Illinois GOP nonetheless.

So, congratulations to Bob Cook, Lake County GOP Chairman.

8th District Walsh: Dirty Rangel Money Should Go to Charity Not Bean for Congress

From the Walsh for Congress campaign…

(Lake Zurich, Illinois) – Apparently, ‘I already spent it’ is a good enough reason for keeping dirty money, at least for Rep. Melissa Bean.

Bean is refusing to give back or to charity the $28,000 she received from Rep. Charlie Rangel who is under investigation from the House Ethics Committee for accepting lavish vacations from special interest groups with business before the powerful House Ways and Means committee while serving as chairman. He is also being investigated for failing to report assets, including his interest in a Dominican Republican guest unit, according to the Daily Herald.

Service Employees Inat’l Union Gives $1.7 Mil to Ill. Gov. Quinn

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Service Employees International Union wants YOU to pay more taxes, Illinois. And, in order to get their wish, they’ve donated $1.7 million to the one candidate that has since the beginning promised to raise everyone’s taxes, Governor Pat “Mighty Taximo” Quinn.

Oh, it’s a cozy arrangement, of course. The SEIU represents many of Illinois public employees. These greedy folks want YOU to pay their way in life, you see? So, big cash goes to Quinn the Mighty Taximo so that he’ll force higher taxes so that, in turn, these public employees will get even greater pay and even more undeserved benefits that other, private sector citizens don’t get. It’s a Faustian bargain, but it is a fact, nonetheless.

As everyone else in the state is losing his job, these trough-feeders want you to pay more taxes for their comfort. Nice work if you can get it, right?

CHICAGO: After spending more than a year to pass a major overhaul of the American health insurance industry, the White House released its latest in a series of new health reform bills.

“This administration’s push to jam a bill that the majority of Americans oppose through reconciliation begs the question, who does this country belong to,” said Republican Nominee for Illinois 2nd District Isaac Hayes, “the people or politicians in Washington D.C.? Attorney General Lisa Madigan Punts on Important Transparency Issue

From Adam Andrzejewski, founder of For The Good Of Illinois…

On February 17th , 2010, for the first time in Illinois history, the Illinois Senate met in a secret budget meeting defined as a “joint caucus”. The Chicago Tribune editorial board used the term “probably illegal” to describe the meeting.

“The Illinois Senate used the statehouse as their personal private meeting hall, abusing the state constitution, the open meetings act, and the spirit of open and transparent Government. Discussing the severity of and solutions to the Illinois budget crisis, a topic that is negatively impacting every Illinois citizen and business, the Senate Sergeant at Arms held order and barred entry to the press under threat of arrest,” Andrzejewski related. “The people of Illinois pay for the lights, heat, building, and the salaries of the every state employee and legislator; yet, the people of Illinois were locked out of the discussion.”

Weekly Standard on Illinois Rebels

-By Warner Todd Huston

Fred Barnes, editor of the Weekly Standard published a piece that 8th District candidate Joe Walsh referenced this week. Barnes didn’t just talking about Walsh, though. Here is the except of what Barnes had to say about several other Illinois Republican “Rebels on the Right.”

The grass-roots revolt in the Illinois primaries was all the more telling because it was a near-total surprise. Ethan Hastert’s name, rather than an asset, “actually worked against him,” says a Republican official who supported him. The Chicago Tribune and the Sun-Times endorsed his opponent, Hultgren—another surprise.

For Hultgren, the key to winning was staying to the right of Hastert. “I believe we need real conservatism in Washington,” he declared. “I’m proud to call myself a real conservative.” He won, 55 percent to 45 percent. He faces Democrat Bill Foster, who won a special election after Hastert’s father resigned, in the general election on November 2.

The success of Dold in the House seat being vacated by Representative Mark Kirk “came out of nowhere,” Representative Aaron Schock of Illinois told me. Schock had endorsed the favorite, Coulson. Dold defeated Coulson, 39 percent to 30 percent, in a multiple candidate race.

Once again, the winner ran against Washington and excessive spending. Dold labeled Coulson “a Springfield insider” as a legislator and one who voted for “tax and spend” bills. As a social moderate, Dold nicely fits the district, which President Obama won with 61 percent of the vote in 2008. Kirk, by the way, won the Republican primary for the Senate seat once held by Obama.

What distinguished Walsh’s victory was the role of tea party activists. Without them, he would have had little chance of winning. After his victory—Walsh got 35 percent in a six-way race—he traveled to Nashville to speak at the National Tea Party Convention. “I ran as a tea party candidate in the primary, and I’m going to run as a tea party candidate in the general,” he said.

When Melissa Bean, the Democratic incumbent, learned that Walsh would be her opponent, she expressed relief, regarding him as the weakest of the Republicans in the primary. Her reaction was reminiscent of how pleased aides of President Carter were in 1980 when Ronald Reagan emerged as his Republican opponent. They were happy to have escaped the awesome juggernaut of a Howard Baker campaign.

Please do go on over to Barnes’ piece and read what he had to say on races in other parts of the country.

Gov’t Waste: $250,000 for Green Roof for DuPage County Bldg (Illinois)

-By Warner Todd Huston

It’s stimulus, dontcha know? It’s gonna help us all, ya see? It’ll save the economy, of course. What is it? It’s $250,000 of wasted federal money going to plant some pretty foliage on top of the DuPage County, Illinois Administrative building to erect a “green roof” there.

That’s right, Illinois, your federal tax dollars are being wasted to plant some weeds on top of the DuPage County government building, plants that are supposed to save the county money in energy bills. Well, in about 20 or 30 years, that might actually be true when factoring in the $250,000 initial price tag.

Of course, one can easily assume that the DuPage County facility will have been torn down and a new boondoggle of a government building program will be stated to replace it long before that 30 years is up, right? In other words, the energy savings that might occur some 30 years from now will not likely be realized.

But, is it stimulus? Will it help anyone? Not really. This is money going to government from government. It is not money going to the private sector so that it can do something that will earn a return on investment. This helps no one but simply adds more tax money spent on more government.

And we all know that the most likely outcome of this whole “green roof” project will be a whole cadre off union louts hired to hold a rake or a watering hose for 7 hours a day, a cadre that will then retire at 50 with $50,000 a year pensions all paid courtesy of the Illinois tax payer.

Thank you Big Government Obama.

8th District: Statement by Joe Walsh Regarding Personal Financial History

From the Walsh for Congress campaign…

Our country faces critical challenges. I’m running for Congress to address those challenges. It is incredibly disappointing to me – and to the majority of voters in the Illinois 8th Congressional District – that the news media has focused not on these issues that matter to the future of our nation, but instead has consistently sought to ridicule, demean, and condescend to anyone who tries to challenge the status quo.

The politics of personal destruction is the reason we so seldom see legitimate “change agents” running for office.

I won the Republican primary by a large margin, despite being outspent because voters identified with my message. I feel like I’m losing my country and too few we’ve sent to D.C. are doing anything about it.

22nd District State Senate: Rauschenberger Slams Democrat’s Video Gambling Law

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Daily Herald is reporting on a pointed exchange between 22nd District incumbent State Senator Mike Noland and GOP challenger Steve Rauschenberger over the Democrats reliance on revenue from video gambling to fund state pork projects.

Noland was desperately trying to make the GOP out to be the bad guys because some Republicans were for the video gambling law when it was implemented last year but now some of them are balking at the spending that Democrats want to do with the money they think they are getting from gambling.

Noland whined that “now it’s largely Republicans who are trying to create a roadblock,” to use of the money. Noland is trying to claim that state Republicans are merely trying to prevent people getting jobs from the capital bill just before an election, intimating that state jobs on Quinn’s attach would bring Democrat the votes that the GOP wants to prevent.

In reply Rauschenberger made some excellent points.

“In still another district near Chicago, venture capitalist Joe Walsh, 48, moved back to his hometown of Barrington to run for Congress. Republican party leaders believed Walsh would finish third in the primary to two candidates better known in the district. Walsh won.

“In these three primary elections on February 2, we saw something new. The conservative, anti-Washington, antispending backlash against President Obama and congressional Democrats had spread. It affected the outcome of Republican races. And this phenomenon has become a major factor in other Republican contests.”

Southtown Star Mad that Candidate is Against Socialism?

– By Warner Todd Huston

Southtown Star columnist Phil Kadner tried on his high dudgeon at 11th District GOP Congressional candidate Adam Kinzinger in his March 2 editorial headlined, “A different battle for Adam Kinzinger.”

Why was Kadner so upset at the 32-year-old candidate? What caused Kadner’s tsk tsking to fly? What low-end sort of campaigning evil did candidate Kinzinger perpetrate?

Well, it seems at a recent rally Kinzinger held up a T-Shirt given to him by a member of the audience. And on that T-Shirt was, *gasp*, the word “socialism” with a circle and a line through it.

That’s right, folks, Phil Kadner is upset with Republican Adam Kinzinger because the candidate held up an anti-socialism T-Shirt at a rally. Imagine, an anti-socialism T-Shirt at a tea party styled rally… with Republicans around and about… held up by a Republican candidate! And imagine any American standing against socialism! What have you heard about the Tea Parties?

This is a new video from the Sam Adams Alliance

Most of us have had some experience with the Tea Party movement over the past year. Maybe you attended or organized a rally, watched one on t.v., or saw the media coverage given to these protests. You may have formed an opinion of this group of people through experience, or through the lens of others’ opinions, good or bad.

Recent attention to this movement has again revived, with the election of Scott Brown and growing media attention.

In January, SAM had the opportunity to conduct extensive market research with leaders of the Tea Parties, both through questionnaires and through in-depth one-on-one interviews.

What we found challenges much of the information currently on the market.

Now see what the activists themselves had to say about the Tea Parties: their motivations, their fears, and who they support for president in 2012.
