Say No To The Illinois Recall Amendment

-By Warner Todd Huston

The idea of a recall of elected officials was and is a good idea, especially in this, the most corrupt state in the union. Just think if we had a good recall amendment during this past mess with Governor Rod Blagojevich.

Well, we did get a recall amendment on the ballot here in 2010. Unfortunately, the language in this recall amendment makes the whole thing useless.

There are two major drawbacks to this amendment. First it only affects the position of Governor. Instead of applying to all elected officials (as it should) the language of this particular amendment is limited only to the governor. This is a bad limitation and if this passes would make Illinois the only state that has a recall amendment that limits the recall just to the position of governor.

Hard to Believe That Alexi Giannoulias ‘Didn’t Know’ Of Mobster’s Crimes

-By Warner Todd Huston

Alexi Giannoulias is well known as the “Mob Banker” for the fact that his family bank lent $20 million to two mobsters while Alexi was an officer of the bank. The Illinois Democrat’s Senate candidate has finally answered to this loan a bit more directly than he has in the past and his answer is simply a bit hard to take.

On NBC’s Meet The Press on Sunday, October 10, Giannoulias uttered the laughable claim that he “didn’t know the extent” of the criminal activities of his mobster borrowers at the Broadway Bank.

This is a bit hard to take. Giannoulias seemed to act as if the two mobster’s activities were not as well known in 2005 as they really were at the time his bank gave these ne’er-do-wells multiple loans. Both Michael “Jaws” Giorango and his pal Demitri Stavropoulos were well known criminals by the time they were being served at Broadway Bank.

EAST MOLINE, IL–Bobby Schilling, Republican candidate for Congress in the Illinois 17th District, called on Rep. Hare to accept responsibility for his failed record on jobs and spending. In the four years Rep. Hare has represented the 17th District, the unemployment rate has doubled and the national debt has increased by $5 trillion.

Video: Chicago Park Dist. Worker Mad At Unions Political Spending

-By Warner Todd Huston

A Chicago Park District employee is seen on this video attacking his union for spending his dues on political causes that he doesn’t support.

This Park District employee works for the Service Employees International Unions (SEIU) and was asked his thoughts on union spending at the Palos Tea Party’s American Voter Rally in Tinley Park, IL on Oct. 10, 2010.

One has to wonder how many other union members are upset like this — not just of the SEIU but all unions across the country? Over the last few decades unions have spent billions of their member’s dues money on extremely left-wing causes. Why, just a few weeks ago dozens of unions got together to spend their member’s dues money supporting a rally sponsored by actual, hardcore communist and socialist groups.

And unions are spending millions this term, too. They desperately want to keep overspending, socialist-leaning Democrats in power. And all this money being spent comes right out of the pockets of the rank and file union members.

95,000 More Jobs Lost in September; Unemployment 9.6%

From the Schilling for Congress campaign (17th District)…

Schilling: “These numbers remind us why we need a clean break from the failed liberal policies of Washington.”

EAST MOLINE, IL–The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released the jobs report for September. Total nonfarm payroll employment dropped by 95,000 jobs, and the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 9.6%. Bobby Schilling, Republican candidate for Congress in the Illinois 17th District, released the following statement regarding the report:

“14.8 million people in this country are unemployed, and the unemployment rates among youth (26%), African-Americans (16.1%), and Hispanics (12.4%) are disturbingly high. These numbers remind us why we need a clean break from the failed liberal policies of Washington. Over the past two years, Rep. Hare has consistently voted for more spending and higher taxes while refusing to promote policies that would create jobs. As a successful small business owner, I understand that our biggest priority right now is getting people back to work. While Phil Hare spends every minute he has ‘debunking the myth’ that our country faces a $13.6 trillion national debt, I’ll be fighting for jobs by advocating low taxes, less spending, and limited government.”

Hare Desperate to Take Focus Off Record Uses Debunked Attacks on Bobby Schilling and ATR Pledge

-By Adam Radman, Americans for Tax Reform

The recent attacks by Rep. Phil Hare’s campaign against Bobby Schilling and the Taxpayer Protection Pledge lack credibility. Democrats like Rep. Hare have made these false and misleading claims over and over again across the country. A number of news sources have reviewed the charges and discredited them. Starting in April, FactCheck.org’s Brook Jackson condemned the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for making similar claims calling the attacks “blatantly false.” Jon Ralston, during his television show Face to Face, called similar claims against the Pledge in NV-03 “thoroughly misleading.” Even the DSCC and Democrat Senate candidates have attempted to distort the meaning of the Pledge. Democrat Sen. Patty Murray’s attempts were called “a stretch” by King 5 TV in Washington State.

Rep. Phil Hare has attempted to distract voters from the important issues this election cycle: jobs and economic growth. Voters should demand to know from Rep. Hare just how tax hikes on individuals and/or businesses create jobs. In fact, voters should also ask him why he left Washington before putting a stop to one of the largest tax hikes in U.S. History. By taking the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, Schilling has made a clear pledge to the taxpayers in IL-17 that he will oppose and vote against any and all tax increases on working families and employers

EAST MOLINE, IL–Congressman Phil Hare has released another baseless attack ad against Bobby Schilling. The claims in the commercial are so misleading one might call them “factually bankrupt.”

The commercial cites the Project Vote Smart survey to claim “Bobby Schilling refuses to let Medicare negotiate volume discounts on prescriptions. Maybe he thinks it’s not fair to the drug companies.”

Mass. Democrat DA Took Campaign Donations from Lawyer of Man his Office is Prosecuting

-By Warner Todd Huston

The race in the Massachusetts 10th District has recently been determined by political handicapper Charlie Cook as a “lean Democrat” race and others have declared it a dead heat. But news is now emerging that just might help the few undecided voters left out there to chose the Republican over the Democrat.

Democrat candidate and current Norfolk District Attorney Bill Keating seems to be in a spot of ethical trouble. The AP is reporting that Keating took campaign donations totaling $1,545 from the lawyer of a man that the DA’s office Keating heads is prosecuting for murder.

Alexi Bails on Senate Debate

-By Warner Todd Huston

Illinois Democrat Senatorial candidate Alexi “The Mob Banker” Giannoulias has withdrawn from a scheduled debate that was to be held October 21 at the WSIU studios in downstate Carbondale.

Giannoulias said that he was pulling out because the Libertarian candidate, Michael Labano, was not invited to participate.

“It’s disappointing, but these things happen in politics,” Yepsen said. “The rules we put together were that we would invite any candidate of an established political party. We’re not going to change the rules for one candidate.”

Independent candidates would only be invited to the debate if they had received at least a 5-percent vote in neutral polls, Yepsen said, and no independent candidates met the requirements.

The debate was to include Republican candidate Mark Kirk, Democrat Giannoulias, and Green Party candidate LeAlan Jones.

One wonders what Giannoulias is afraid of. After all, the rules for entry into the debate was known by Giannoulias when he initially accepted the invitation.

Ill. Ranks Second After California for Worst Financial Shape in Country

-By Warner Todd Huston

According to Bloomberg News, “Meredith Whitney, the analyst who correctly predicted Citigroup Inc.’s dividend cut in 2008, will release a report rating California’s financial condition as the worst among the 15 largest U.S. states.” Illinois ranks second in the worst category.

After California, New Jersey, Illinois and Ohio tie as the second-worst, followed by Michigan, Georgia, New York and Florida, Fortune reported. Pennsylvania, Maryland and Massachusetts garnered neutral rankings. Her report ranks Texas, Virginia, Washington and North Carolina as the best states, according to Fortune.

The final report was the result of two years of work made more difficult by the fact that few states are very transparent in their budgeting, said Whitney.

Alexi Tells Voters He Was No Banker, But Claims to IRS He Was

-By Warner Todd Huston

It’s almost like a bad Riddler quip from TVs Adam West Batman show: When is a banker not a banker? Well, apparently the Illinois Democrat candidate for Senate, Alexi “the Mob Banker” Giannoulias, is trying his hand at the riddle. He’s constantly told the voters that he was not employed by his family bank during the year that it met so much trouble, yet on his tax returns Alexi took deductions for his bank work during that same year.

So when IS a banker not a banker? Apparently when he’s trying to run for Senate and get out from under the mess his bank ended up in.

Giannoulias has claimed that he had left his family bank in 2005. But as the Chicago Tribune reports, “Giannoulias was able to take a $2.7 million tax deduction last year because he reported working hundreds of hours at Broadway Bank in 2006.”
