National Debt Barrels Past $13.5 Trillion

From the Schilling for Congress campaign (17th District)…

Schilling: “The era of deficit spending and unbalanced budgets has to end.”

EAST MOLINE, IL–The national debt exceeded $13.5 trillion as the US Government’s fiscal year came to a close last Thursday. According to U.S. Treasury Department data, the national debt has risen almost $5 trillion during Rep. Hare’s tenure. Four years ago the national debt stood at $8.6 trillion. As of September 30, according to the Treasury’s “Debt to the Penny” web page, the national debt currently stands at $13,561,623,030,891.79.

Rep. Hare recently said (on C-Span), “Every day I have here is going to spent trying to debunk the myth that this country is in debt and we just can’t spend.”

Bobby Schilling, Republican candidate for Congress in the Illinois 17th District, criticized Rep. Hare for his unwillingness to take the national debt seriously and for supporting out of control spending policies that have put our country’s economic security at risk.

“In just four years, the national debt has increased by $5 trillion.” Schilling said. “Rep. Hare just hasn’t exercised any discipline when it comes to spending. He is actually on record saying he believes the national debt is a ‘myth.’ I believe the people of the 17th District deserve a representative who is actually concerned about the economic security of our great nation.”

Schilling argued that stopping wasteful spending in Washington is one of the most important issues our country faces today.

“Our national debt is currently at about 90% of our total GDP,” Schilling said. “We have heard real concerns about our nation’s credit rating being weakened if the national debt increases much more. If this happens, the interest payments on our debt will increase substantially. This just isn’t something we can afford to let happen. The era of deficit spending and unbalanced budgets has to end for the sake of the future of this country.”

Bobby Schilling, a native of Rock Island, graduated from Alleman High School and attended Black Hawk College. Schilling, a local business owner, is the Republican candidate for the 17th Congressional District in Illinois. Bobby is running on a platform of bringing jobs and real representation back to the 17th District. Earlier this year, Schilling conducted a 34-city “Bob’s for Jobs” tour, where he met with voters and employers all across the 17th District. Schilling was recently named an official ‘Young Gun’ by the National Republican Congressional Committee in their Young Guns program of top tiered races.
