Will Obama Continue to Miss the Target?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post reported on a conference call held by the Obama campaign on Friday. The intent was to roll out the latest attempt by the Obama campaign to say that they were going to “retake the offensive” in this campaign. Cillizza wondered if Obama’s “aggressive new tone” will work?

There is no doubt among politics watchers that the McCain campaign has led repeated news cycles and the campaign narrative has been under his control since just before the Republican National Convention. And the announcement of Governor Sarah Palin as the VP nominee has had the full attention of every politico in the country. McCain is driving the news and the debate. It’s just that simple.

Cillizza reports on the Obama campaign’s various “new” strategies all intended to assuage the ire in Democratic circles that Obama is “letting the race slip away.” But, one thing in particular in the Cilllizza piece drew my attention.

I, Obama

-By John Armor

Remember the PBS series special on the Roman Emperor, Claudius? The title, which captured the style of his governance, “I, Claudius.” It was a 13-part series on Masterpiece Theater. How many of you saw it? Let’s not always see the same hands.

Well, almost all of you remember some of the history of the Roman Emperors. They ranged from mad and murderous, like Nero, to rational and effective, like Augustus. Hold that thought, and we’ll get to today’s subject.

A good friend, Duncan Parham, is a man of eclectic interests. One of those is rare coins. Last weekend he showed me a catalogue of a major New York dealer, which had coins going back to the Ptolemic regimes in Egypt and the Eutruscans in Italy. What particularly interested me were the Roman Emperor coins. They had coins depicting each the Emperors, many at reasonable prices.

Greta Says Media a No-Show in Wasilla, ‘Where is Everybody?’

-By Warner Todd Huston

One would assume that the Old Media would have a phalanx of intrepid mushing, journos swarming about Wasilla, Alaska, Sarah Palin’s hometown. One would think that every single person that lives within 100 miles of Wasilla would have been contacted by at least one journalist by now. That the media’s due diligence would have been dilagenced to death at this point. I mean, it’s been two weeks! Well, according to Greta Van Susteren, the media is curiously absent in Wasilla.

Greta posted a quickie blog entry on September 12 wondering where the heck everyone was?

What surprises me is that almost no journalists covering politics have come to Wasilla to get to learn more about the Governor. You learn a great deal by meeting friends, family, people in the community, business people, people in restaurants, reading the local newspaper etc….I know it is far from home for all of us and expensive for networks but I am delighted Fox sent us here. It gives me a “point of reference” so that I can better (not perfectly, but better) do my job for you…I hope you have enjoyed our coverage so far…

Well, that IS a curious thing, isn’t it?

Yet, the newspapers, cable outlets and the Big Three Nets SURE as heck have been knocking themselves out creating anti-Palin stories, haven’t they?

One wonders where they are getting their info?

Tis a curious thing, indeed.

Judge Agrees, Patriotic Banner OK for Classroom

-By Warner Todd Huston

A Federal judge said that it was OK for a Poway, California school teacher to sue his school district for forcing him to remove a banner that featured well known, patriotic American references to God in an early September ruling.

Math teacher Brad Johnson who teachers at Westview High in San Diego County, California, had the banner on his classroom wall for the last 20 years but only last year was told by school administrators that the banner was supposedly an affront to the principles of separation of Church and State. After two decades without complaint, Johnson was told his banner suddenly offended his students because the banners “were an impermissible attempt to make a Judeo-Christian statement to his students.”

The suddenly banned banner included the phrases “In God We Trust,” “One Nation Under God,” “God Bless America,” and “God Shed His Grace on Thee.”

Teacher Johnson decided to take his school district to court to restore to his classroom wall the common American slogans while the school system sought to have the suit tossed out claiming that Johnson, as a public employee, had only limited 1st Amendment rights and that the principal had authority over what appeared on the walls of the classroom.

Judge Roger T. Benitez sided with the patriotic-minded teacher.

Did ABC & Gibson Use Camera Trickery To Belittle Gov. Palin?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Did ABC use particular camera tricks to make Governor Palin look small and powerless in their Charlie Gibson interview? I’ve been pointed to a blog that makes a compelling case that they did just that. Using still shots of the Gibson interview with Palin compared to similar Gibson interviews with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, it seems this blogger has proven it to be an open and shut case of manipulation of the viewer. The writer shows how ABC used special camera placements and lenses to make Governor Palin seem small and Charlie Gibson seem overpowering and large by comparison.

By now, just about everyone is aware of Hollywood’s special effects and camera techniques. There have been so many TV shows explaining them, so many DVD extras laying out the techniques that most Americans are at least a little familiar with the effects and techniques that filmmakers use to heighten and enhance their work. The anonymous blogger is familiar with these special effects, claims to work in the business in Hollywood himself, and does a great job explaining and pointing out where such effects were used to belittle Governor Palin.

Citing the anti-conservative, Hollywood hatemongering we are all familiar with our blogger remains anonymous. He says he doesn’t want to hurt his career any more than he already has being a conservative in Hollywood. So, with deference to “HollywoodTrench’s blog,” I’ll lay out his argument for you all to decide if he has hit the spot or if he is a bit too conspiratorial for your tastes.

More ACORN Vote Fraud Attempts

-By Warner Todd Huston

The union supporting, Democratic Party pushing, extreme leftist Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) has been caught trying to gerry rig voter applications in Michigan. It is looking like fraud on a massive scale in Detroit as ACORN tries to fill the Democrat voter rolls with fake Democrat voters.

ACORN is being investigated after several Municipal Clerks discovered fraudulent and duplicate voter registration applications.

The majority of the fraudulent and duplicate applications are coming from the liberal ACORN group based in Detroit, Michigan, which now has ACORN investigating the problem once again as well as the Secretary of State’s Office turning over some of those applications to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

And it isn’t just Detroit that has found fraud being perpetrated by ACORN.

In recent years, ACORN’s voter registration programs have come under investigation in Ohio, Colorado, Missouri and Washington, with some employees convicted of voter fraud.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is also reporting that the Obama campaign has been forced to amend a report to reflect over $800,000 of previously unreported ACORN donations to his campaign.

ACORN is at the heart of one of the most massive voter fraud campaigns in American history. ACORN is intimate with Barack Obama and is a major supporter of unions throughout the country and is doing its level best (and illegally at that) trying to assure that Obama wins this election.

Disgraced Ex-Labor Chief Helps Feds Snare Corrupt Pol

-By Warner Todd Huston

What a career move. From top union chief, to convicted felon, to snitch. News emerged this week that disgraced union boss Brian McLaughlin has turned FBI snitch giving information that has led to the arrest of a Queens, New York politician Anthony Seminerio.

McLaughlin faces sentencing for his conviction for stealing $2.2 million in cash, cars and perks, but he isn’t going down alone. The news probably has quite a few New York pols quaking in the boots, wondering if the FBI is about to knock on their door next.

As to Anthony Seminerio, he’s in dutch, big time.

A 17-page complaint says Seminerio’s influence-peddling became so blatant that he twice brought the FBI agent into the Assembly. “Anthony Seminerio put his office up for sale for those willing to pay the right price,” said Manhattan U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia.

In one of Seminerio’s schemes, federal prosecutors said, he collected $310,000 – a huge boost from his $79,500 state salary – from an unidentified hospital that received millions in state funding with his help.

But, always remember, union bosses are only out to help the little guy… and, in an effort to get a lesser sentence on corruption charges, the occasional FBI agent.

Palin’s Religious Beliefs Are The Same As Middle America’s

-By Marie Jon’

As the “drive-by-media” continues to look at every aspect of Sarah Palin’s personal and religious life, they are digging themselves into a big hole, turning what they believe will cause her harm, to work for her good. If you take nothing else from this, remember this quote: Bitter Pennsylvanians “cling to their guns and religion.” (As Barack Obama Says)

Reporters for CNN and other networks are not prepared to write honestly or objectively about matters of faith. These are people who view life from a much different perspective. They are not so naive to overlook that Christians from all denominations are offended by such things as CNN’s hit piece about Gov. Palin’s faith.

The mass media and the Obama camp want to paint a ridiculous picture of Christians who refuse to embrace progressive liberal doctrine. Atheist George Soros ingratiates leftist denominations with his money. The teachings of the “Religious Left” have little to do with the Gospel of the Holy Bible.

The Emergent Church Runs Away from the Bible!

-By Don Boys, Ph.D.

Emergent Church leaders ask the same question Satan asked in the Garden, “Hath God said?” They have no confidence in the Word so they have no compass, chart, or anchor. In my opinion, they are not even on the Boat!

An EC follower will say to another, “I really think that this is true; however, I could be wrong. It might be something very different. What do you think?” They have such “enlightening” conversations as they sit in large rooms, often by candlelight and the smell of incense, hear ringing of bells (Smells and Bells Theology?) surrounded by statues and icons. No one seems to care what the Bible says. It is not what the Bible says that matters to them but how one reacts to what it says. How do you “feel” about what the Bible says? There are “new ways of believing” and “new interpretations” of Scripture and we are to “move beyond religion—particularly Christianity.”

The Bible is not considered an accurate, absolute, authoritative, or authoritarian source but a book to be experienced and one experience can be as valid as any other can. Experience, dialogue, feelings, and conversations are equated with Scripture while certitude, authority, and doctrine are to be eschewed! No doctrines are to be absolute and truth or doctrine must be considered only with personal experiences, traditions, historical leaders, etc. The Bible is not an answer book. (Brian, McLaren, A New Kind of Christianity, p. 52.)

The movement is known for its conversation, candles, coffee, and couches not for biblical convictions!

Obama’s Terrorist Friend a VERY Close Associate

-By Warner Todd Huston

When Obama’s connection to American terrorist William Ayers was first brought up to him for an explanation, he tried to claim that Ayers was just another neighborhood guy, a “mainstream” American, but that he, Obama, didn’t really have much to do with him.

But, since then we have seen that Obama has had intimate and important connections with William Ayers through the Chicago Annenberg Challenge and other initiatives and organizations.

As it occurs, Obama’s claim that he and the terrorist Ayers are not close is simply an outright lie.

Barack Obama is an intimate associate of American terrorist William Ayers as well as many other America hating activists. How have we gotten to a point in American history when a presidential candidate can have a close association with a person who has been responsible for bombing the U.S. Capitol and was part of an outlaw organization that is responsible for murdering American policemen?

Obama has surrounded himself with people that hate this country. Yet Democrats welcome him with open arms? What does that say about Democrats?

And what does it say about the American media when it so thoroughly attempts to cover up or diminish this connection?

The Barack Obama Campaign Store Rip Off — Poor Need Not Buy

-By Warner Todd Huston

He cares about the little guy, Barack Obama does. He’s for all sorts of wondrous new programs and handouts for the benighted poor in this country. He’s like Moses leading them to the Promised Land, isn’t he? Well, if he is, apparently he doesn’t expect the poor to be wearing any Barack Obama gear as they dance off into the sunset with the Pied Messiah marching before them playing his mesmerizing tune of hopenchange.

OK, enough metaphor mixing, let’s get down to brass tacks. Barack Obama is ripping off the public with his Internet Obama gear store on his campaign website theONE.com (well, OK it’s really www.barackobama.com/, but who’s really taking notes here?) His gear is so over priced that a regular guy might find it a bit daunting to deck himself out in messiahgear for the upcoming coronation… sham… er, I mean “elections.”

Let’s just take the most common Barack-a-brac that the average gungho Obamaton might want to wear to show his sycophancy… dang, er, I mean support… for the Obamessiah. Let’s consider that a commoner that stumbles onto the messiah’s webstore would want to buy a hat, T-Shirt (union made of course) and a campaign button. After all, that’s the bare minimum that a supporter could buy, right? The coolers, underwear, and S&M collars will have to come later, I’m sure. First the basics.

UPI Charges ABC With Biased ‘Double Standard’ in Palin Interview

-By Warner Todd Huston

Dontcha ya hate it when Old Media outlets beat up on other Old Media outlets? (Well, maybe you don’t hate it, exactly) It’s like Old Media on Old Media violence. In this case we have the United Press International (UPI), struggling lesser known news wire service, giving the big smack-a-roo to ABC. UPI is warning that Charlie Gibson’s gruff handling of Governor Sarah Palin may “backfire,” and that the interview revealed a “double standard” of harsh treatment for Republicans compared to the softballs they’ve thrown to Democrats in past interviews.

Who can disagree with that assessment?

UPI’s Martin Sieff’s one sentence assessment of the interview seems to be the general consensus of all dispassionate observers. “There were no surprises, no knockout zingers,” Sieff says, “but also no bloopers Thursday night in Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s first TV interview since becoming the Republican vice presidential nominee.”

But, Sieff also noted that Gibson obviously intended to hurt Palin if he could and also noted that “double standard.”

Did Chris Matthews Twist Palin’s Israel Reply to ABC’s Gibson?

-By Warner Todd Huston

On the September 12 edition of Hardball, Chris Matthews so twisted what Governor Sarah Palin said in reply to Charlie Gibson’s question about Israel’s defense decisions that her reply is hardly recognizable in Matthews’ hands. By slyly adding his own additions to Gibson’s question and Palin’s reply, Matthews attempted to make Palin look naive on the foreign policy question. In essence, Matthews lied about what Palin said.

Matthews made a knot out of Palin’s words, like taking a straw and tying it in a knot. It’s still a straw, but it is no longer useful for what it was intended. With his underhanded additions to Palin’s answer, Matthews made her words no longer fit the situation.

Obama Failed With Earmark Attempt, Yet Attacks Others For Taking Earmarks?

-By Warner Todd Huston

This is the pot calling the kettle for sure. Earlier this week, Obama made an early attempt to attack Governor Sarah Palin on the earmark issue. He claimed that Palin is responsible for taking many earmarked funds for her state as she sat in the Governor’s office in Juneau and that her attack on him for earmarks is, therefore, illegitimate.

“I know the governor of Alaska has been, you know, saying she is change and that is great. She is a skillful politician. But when you been taking all these earmarks when it is convenient and then suddenly you are the champion anti-earmark person. That is not change, come on. I mean, words mean something. You can’t just make stuff up. You can’t just make stuff up. We have a choice to make and the choice is clear.”

But, this return fire on Palin’s ridiculing of Obama for his many earmarks is not very effective. While Obama is pointing fingers at Palin, news came out this week that Senator Obama had unsuccessfully tried several times to get multi-million dollar earmarks for one of his biggest Chicago contributors. So, his attack on Palin seems more like smokescreen than cruise missile.

Obama twice attempted to direct more than $3 million dollars in taxpayer funds to the Adler Planitarium Museum in Chicago. It just so happens that the Adler’s chairman is one of Barack’s biggest Chicago fundraisers.

Union’s Troubles Deepen: Child-Porn Case Revealed

-By Warner Todd Huston

The troubled Service Employee International Union (SEIU) in California is seeing yet another explosion of negative publicity this week as one of its Local chiefs is arrested for possessing child pornography. The Sacramento Bee is reporting Local 1000 District Labor Council 784 Jaime E. Feliciano, 49, was arrested Tuesday, September 9.

Authorities on Tuesday arrested the president of a state workers union local on suspicion of possessing child pornography and violating his probation as a sex offender.

Sacramento Country Sheriff’s Dept. also reports that they had received a tip that Feliciano had recently had inappropriate contact with a juvenile.

The Bee’s State Worker Blog had a salient point: how does a convicted pedophile become a union chief? The State Worker Blog asked Jim Zamora of the SEIU what happened?

We are all shocked and disgusted by these charges. No one in SEIU leadership knew that he was a convicted sex offender prior to the media reports of his arrest.

Apparently, the SEIU is now taking steps to get rid of the pedophile chief.

I find it interesting, though, that a union as powerful and large as the SEIU didn’t know that their Local’s leader was a convicted sex offender.

The Final Daze of the Elite Media?

-By Vince Johnson

The inconsistencies we are seeing in the elite news media are disturbing.

Mention of Obama’s connection to Islam is considered lacking in news value and not a factor to consider during the 2008 Presidential Race. Obama has not denied that his father was a Muslim, that he spent time in Mosques, and that his name is more readily associated with Islam than Christianity. Despite the world wide presence of Islam, the elite news media accepted this without further ado and has moved on.

On the other hand, the elite news media has focused upon Sara Palin’s connection with a Pentecostal Church in a small Alaskan town and her degree from the little known University of Idaho. They hint that these realities indicate background might not be appropriate for the office of Vice President of the United States!

Mo Dowd, Matt Damon Repeat NutRoots Lie About Palin

-By Warner Todd Huston

**Video Below the Fold**

As if we needed another reason to think that the excitable Maureen Dowd and the empty headed Matt Damon are… well, excitable and empty headed… we get the newest raindrop in their river of blather as proof that their “research” into a subject seems to consist of hearing an unsupported claim and deciding it represent gospel truth. Our latest proof is that they both seem to have been taken in by a nutrooter lie, a fake quote that claims Sarah Palin said, “dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago.”

Both seem to have fallen for a parody of Governor Palin invented by a blogger whose post seems to have been taken literally. The following self-identified “fake Governor Sarah Palin Quote” was posted on August 30: “God made dinosaurs 4,000 years ago as ultimately flawed creatures, lizards of Satan really, so when they died and became petroleum products we, made in his perfect image, could use them in our pickup trucks, snow machines and fishing boats.”

Damon’s laughable little attempt at political analysis consisted of an interview he recently gave where he ripped into Governor Palin. He claimed he felt she was unqualified, yet then turned around one sentence later to say he knows nothing about her. Isn’t that like claiming to be an expert on something then immediately admitting that you’ve never studied the subject? Near the end of the interview, Damon said. “I need to know if she really thinks dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago, that’s an important… I wanna know that, I really do.”

The Envirowacko Religion… Photo Proof

-By Warner Todd Huston

For the most part, extreme environmentalists are Godless. They often claim to be atheists or at least agnostics on the subject of religion. Many even ridicule religion, especially Christianity, calling it “superstition,” “backwards,” or “archaic.” They often blame for what they claim is the destruction of the world’s ecology on people who are religious and then use that as a basis to call hypocrisy on those same religious people. We’ve all seen it.

But, in general they also claim that their beliefs in humanism and nature are superior. However, they’d scoff at claims that they have merely replaced traditional religion with one of their own creation: environmentalism. They would argue that their beliefs are simply applied logic and does not represent that of religious zealotry.

Well, they say that pictures say a thousand words and the Los Angeles Times published a photo that puts the lie to the claim that environmentalism is not a religion:

Labor Unrest, Ready to Fight… Itself

-By Warner Todd Huston

Andy Stern, president of the Service Employee International Union (SEIU), has an ambitious plan for the future. He imagines the SEIU as the voice of all working Americans, not just that of his union. He feels the SEIU should and will lead the nation in employment policy, essentially claiming a place at the table of power where legally only legislators should sit. In pursuit of this, Stern has earmarked an unprecedented $85 million dollars of his members’ money to go to elect Democrats to Congress and the White House. And, apparently only one thing stands in his way is…

… his own membership.

We have here on the blog been following the endemic corruption scandal engulfing the SEIU offices in California, all of it tired to operatives intimate with and appointed by Andy Stern. In response to these scandals, Stern has begun to make a show of pretending at a clean up. ( see here, here, here, here, and here)

Rising Unemployment and Illegal Immigration

-By Dan Scott

I have been pondering the unemployment issue for a while, especially the El Centro, CA figure of 23.3%… We all know an illegal worker is NOT allowed to draw unemployment benefits. But something here just doesn’t make sense. We keep on viewing the world with a double standard where we as law abiding citizens assume those who draw government benefits and those who give them are doing so according to the Law. I believe this to be a totally false assumption.

We keep finding out via the Sanctuary City movement, people and officials are breaking the law contrary to our assumptions.

  1. It is illegal to cross the border, but millions do it anyway.
  2. It is illegal for a non citizen to work without a permit/green card, but millions do it anyway.
  3. It is illegal to fill out government forms under false pretenses but millions have done so on the I-9.
  4. It is illegal to use someone else’s social security number, but millions do so anyway to get a job.
  5. It is illegal to misrepresent your citizenship status in obtaining a driver’s license, yet we have governors prepared to literally look the other under the guise of bringing them out of the shadows.
  6. We still have police departments directed not to hand over illegal immigrants to ICE and NOT to ask regarding their immigration status in the first place.

Let’s be clear about the above activities, most of them are felonies with prison time in excess of one year:

Scriptural Truth is Unimportant to Emergent Churches!

-By Don Boys, Ph.D.

Some of the Emergent leaders such as Bell, McLaren, Kimball, Burke, Chalke, Jones, and Company are famous preachers, writers, etc., who have led the nebulous movement into deep, stagnant waters of heresy; but then that has always happened when a person, church, college, or a movement gets away from the Bible.

McLaren is very confused about personal salvation as evidenced when he declared, “I don’t think we’ve got the gospel right yet. What does it mean to be ‘saved’? When I read the Bible, I don’t see it meaning, ‘I’m going to heaven after I die.’” (“The Emergent Mystique,” Christianity Today, Nov. 2004, p. 40).

McLaren reveals that they want to “go back and get reconnected to Jesus with all of his radical, profound, far-reaching message of the Kingdom of God” without the institutional trappings and without the doctrine. (Interview with Brian McLaren, Religion and Ethics Newsweekly website, 7-15-2005.) If he wants to be connected to Christ, I suggest he start with John 3 and the New Birth experience! EC leaders don’t seem to understand that Bible doctrine is Bible truth.

Whoopi Thinks Slavery Still In Constitution?

-By Warner Todd Huston

**Video Below the Fold**

On ABC’s “The View” on September 12, Whoopi Goldberg asked Senator John McCain if she should worry about being made a slave again once he becomes president. Newsflash, Whoopi: There was this little fracas we call the Civil War where six hundred thousand Americans died and that resulted in the elimination of slavery from existence. Oh, and Whoopi, it happened nearly 150 years ago! Just trying to help you with that whole “history” thing, Whoopster.

Apparently, Whoopi is unaware that slavery was removed from the Constitution, because during a discussion about the Law of the Land on the TV talk show, Whoopi wondered if she should “worry” about being cast into chattel slavery should John McCain get in office and institute his desires that strict construction of the Constitution be observed by his judicial picks.

The subject of how McCain would handle the Roe v Wade abortion situation is what prompted Whoopi to blurt out her uninformed view of the Constitution.

Conn. Paper: Tired of Attacking Palin, Attacks ‘Angry’ Town of Wasilla Instead

-By Warner Todd Huston

This one has got to take the cake for stupidity and lack of journalistic integrity. The Old Media has been gyrating in ever widening circles to find new and unheard of ways to destroy Governor Sarah Palin and now from the Hartford Courant (Connecticut) we find the most ridiculous one yet. With this Robert Thorson column we have now gone from slandering Gov. Palin herself, to attacking every last member of her family — including her Down Syndrome child, Trig — to this latest stop on the smear Palin express: attacking Palin’s hometown Wasilla, Alaska. Thorson seriously tries to make us believe that Wasilla is an “angry” town! Why? Because of its “geography.” And because of something that happened in 1976.

Yes, Wasilla is filled with “disappointed” and “angry” people and this is what “scares” Thorson about Governor Sarah Palin. And Thorson knows that everyone in Wasilla is foaming at the mouth mad because of his intimate knowledge of Wasilla and it’s people, right? He knows this because of his extensive research into Wasilla’s newspapers, or TV reports, or interviews with citizens all of whom are telling him about their mental perturbation, right? Uh, no. He “knows” this because of an Encyclopedia entry and little else.

Thorson gives us the sad tale of a Capitol move gone wrong and posits that this has made Wasilla a town of crazies, losers, and trouble makers, a dangerous place that he obviously thinks might give us a dangerous vice president. Thorson tells us that in 1974 Wasilla was chosen to be Alaska’s new capital city because the original capitol, Juneau, is not easily accessible. But the big move ended up not happening because by 1976 the voters of Alaska decided not to foot the one billion dollar price tag to pay for it all.

Union Democracy Group Says SEIU’s New ‘Ethics Commission’ a Scam

-By Warner Todd Huston

For those of you following the several recent L.A.Times stories ( see here, here, here and here), the Service Employee International Union (SEIU) has been embroiled in scandal over misuse of funds in California and Michigan. Several SEIU head operatives have vacated their positions of power and all are tied to SEIU president Andy Stern.

Recently Stern announced that the SEIU was setting up an internal ethics commission to look into allegations of fraud and abuse of funds. But, this sham effort to root out corruption is so transparent that even other pro-union groups are skeptical that Stern is seriously trying to stamp out corruption.

The Association for Union Democracy issued a press release scolding Stern for his obvious attempt to cover up, rather than root out, corruption in the SEIU.

Unions Try to Buy Republican Support

-By Warner Todd Huston

Interestingly, several unions have this convention season tried to cross the aisle from their usual Democrat side over to Republicans looking to garner support from the Red States. The National Journal has an interesting little account of the Service Employee International Union (SEIU) and the National Education Association (NEA) and a few others trying to warm up to Republicans soft on worker freedom.

Under Stern, the SEIU is making a concerted effort to build bridges with the GOP, and for the first time ever it helped to finance a Republican convention by giving $50,000 to the host committee. Furthermore, the SEIU wrote a $25,000 check to the Republican Governors Association and gave about $10,000 to the Republican Main Street Partnership.

Money turns heads, folks. If your representatives in Congress or in your home state are suddenly finding their palms filled with union cash, take a close look at why. Unions won’t be just dispensing cash freely and without strings attached, remember.

If your Congressman is suddenly a recipient of union largess, there will be a reason and that reason will probably not be to your liking. Keep any eye on this lest you be supporting a politician that is quietly supporting unions.

Obama’s politics of new ideas

-By Michael M. Bates

Barack Obama maintains he’s the candidate of new ideas. When clinching his party’s nomination, he boasted that it’s “our time to bring new energy and new ideas to the challenges we face.” The senator’s acceptance speech at the convention noted, “Change happens because the American people demand it – because they rise up and insist on new ideas and new leadership, a new politics for a new time.”

A good place to find some of these new ideas is the Democratic platform, which documents the party’s official position on issues.
