Hard to Believe That Alexi Giannoulias ‘Didn’t Know’ Of Mobster’s Crimes

Alexi Giannoulias is well known as the “Mob Banker” for the fact that his family bank lent $20 million to two mobsters while Alexi was an officer of the bank. The Illinois Democrat’s Senate candidate has finally answered to this loan a bit more directly than he has in the past and his answer is simply a bit hard to take.

On NBC’s Meet The Press on Sunday, October 10, Giannoulias uttered the laughable claim that he “didn’t know the extent” of the criminal activities of his mobster borrowers at the Broadway Bank.

This is a bit hard to take. Giannoulias seemed to act as if the two mobster’s activities were not as well known in 2005 as they really were at the time his bank gave these ne’er-do-wells multiple loans. Both Michael “Jaws” Giorango and his pal Demitri Stavropoulos were well known criminals by the time they were being served at Broadway Bank.

According to GovTrack.us, a non-partisan legislative tracking service, Illinois Representative Jan Schakowsky is the most left-wing member of either of the two houses of Congress, based on the bills she co-sponsors. Similarly, the non-partisan National Journal, which measures members of Congress by their voting record, name Schakowsky as the most liberal Democrat in the House of Representatives.

Imagine what this is saying? Jan Shakowsky is even further left than avowed socialist Bernie Sanders who is listed as an “independent” in the Senate. Shakowsky is even further left than the nation’s token socialist!

Ill. Gov: GOPs Bill Brady 9 Points Up Over Incumbent Dem Quinn

The Sun-Times is reporting on a new poll showing Republican Bill Brady up nine percentage points over incumbent Democrat Pat Quinn for the race for Illinois Governor. The same poll finds the Senate race deadlocked.

The survey polled 1,000 registered voters:

Brady, of Bloomington, was favored by 38.4 percent of those polled, to 29.8 percent for Quinn.

In the race for the Senate, Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk was ahead in the poll by a negligible margin — 37.3 percent to 36.8 percent for Democrat Alexi Giannoulias.

Naturally, the poll also found that third party candidates have figured little in the race.

New The Hill Poll: 12 Freshman Democrat Held Districts Show Major GOP Gains

On Wednesday The Hill reported on a new poll it has conducted of the 2010 midterms with initial focus on 12 districts held by freshmen Democrats and the news isn’t good for those incumbent Dems scrutinized. On the other hand, the poll seems to show that it isn’t pat that Republicans will necessarily run away with it all either.

On Wednesday The Hill reported that in 11 of the initial 12 races polled, Republicans are leading Democrat incumbents. In the 12th, the candidates are tied. While this may seem good for the GOP the downside is that none of the Republicans are polling over 50%.

However, a long held axiom states that an incumbent that can’t reach at lest 50% in the polls generally is in major trouble for re-election and if these polls show GOP leads in each case with not one of these incumbent Dems reaching the 50% mark, that says quite a lot about these midterms.

According to The Hill, the poll also shows that Obamacare is hurting Democrats. “A majority of voters in key battleground districts favor repeal of the legislative overhaul that Congress passed this year.”

To the question of repeal of Obamacare, 56% agreed with repeal and only 32% said no to repeal.

Alexi Bails on Senate Debate

Illinois Democrat Senatorial candidate Alexi “The Mob Banker” Giannoulias has withdrawn from a scheduled debate that was to be held October 21 at the WSIU studios in downstate Carbondale.

Giannoulias said that he was pulling out because the Libertarian candidate, Michael Labano, was not invited to participate.

“It’s disappointing, but these things happen in politics,” Yepsen said. “The rules we put together were that we would invite any candidate of an established political party. We’re not going to change the rules for one candidate.”

Independent candidates would only be invited to the debate if they had received at least a 5-percent vote in neutral polls, Yepsen said, and no independent candidates met the requirements.

The debate was to include Republican candidate Mark Kirk, Democrat Giannoulias, and Green Party candidate LeAlan Jones.

One wonders what Giannoulias is afraid of. After all, the rules for entry into the debate was known by Giannoulias when he initially accepted the invitation.

As for the tea party rallies and organizations, Bean bristled at calling it a “movement”. 1

Bean went on to mention Obama’s inauguration, “I remember being on the (National Mall), there being 1 million people for the inauguration. That is a movement, Bean said. I don’t see a comparison.”1

Alexi Tells Voters He Was No Banker, But Claims to IRS He Was

It’s almost like a bad Riddler quip from TVs Adam West Batman show: When is a banker not a banker? Well, apparently the Illinois Democrat candidate for Senate, Alexi “the Mob Banker” Giannoulias, is trying his hand at the riddle. He’s constantly told the voters that he was not employed by his family bank during the year that it met so much trouble, yet on his tax returns Alexi took deductions for his bank work during that same year.

So when IS a banker not a banker? Apparently when he’s trying to run for Senate and get out from under the mess his bank ended up in.

Giannoulias has claimed that he had left his family bank in 2005. But as the Chicago Tribune reports, “Giannoulias was able to take a $2.7 million tax deduction last year because he reported working hundreds of hours at Broadway Bank in 2006.”

Statement On Two-Year Anniversary Of Foster’s Government Bailout Vote

ST. CHARLES – Randy Hultgren, Republican candidate for Congress in the 14th District, issued the following statement on the two-year anniversary of Democrat Congressman Bill Foster’s disastrous vote to bail out Wall Street.

“Two years ago today, Congressman Bill Foster disregarded the concerns and views of his constituents to support Nancy Pelosi’s Wall Street bailout bill,” said Hultgren. “Unfortunately, that was just the first of Foster’s many votes for bailouts; since then he has voted repeatedly to bail out the private sector using scarce taxpayer dollars while exploiting any opportunity for government intrusion into the marketplace.”

“I’ve spoken to people all across the 14th District and what I’ve consistently heard is they want and expect a more accountable Congress, one that spends responsibly and adheres to a budget,” said Hultgren.

CHARLES – State Senator Randy Hultgren issued the following statement today regarding Congress’s pending failure to pass an extension of expiring tax cuts; Congress is scheduled to adjourn Thursday, part of an effort to give Democrats more time in their districts as they desperately try to save their jobs.

“Taxpayers and small business owners across the 14th Congressional District of Illinois continue to fear what the federal government will do to them while the economy sputters,” said Hultgren. “Rather than going along with efforts to postpone a vote on taxes till after the election, Bill Foster should urge his close, personal friend Nancy Pelosi to hold an up-or-down vote on the extension of all expiring tax cuts prior to this week’s adjournment.”

Rep. Roskam on The ‘Pledge To America’ (Answers to Earmarks Question)

Last week the House Republicans issued their update of the 1994 “Contract With America.” They have labeled it the “Pledge To America,” and it was launched to a standing ovation from House Republicans. On Friday I spoke to Representative Peter Roskam (R, Ill.) and asked a few questions about this new effort.

Roskam said that the preamble of the pledge, “which is really, I think, moving,” was met with a standing ovation when it was presented to all the Hose Republicans and the representative was pleased that the National Review said that the new pledge was bolder than the original 1994 contract.

He also threw out a little taunt to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi saying, “our members are game on and ready to go… if the Speaker wants to mock this stuff then the best way for her to deal with it is to call us out, which of course she won’t.”
