Chicago’s and Suburbs GOP Primary Results, And More….

-By Warner Todd Huston

Here are a few of the results of last night’s primary race in Chicago and the surrounding areas. Unfortunately, for a city of millions, less than 30,000 dragged themselves to the polls to vote. Even more to Chicago’s shame, there are only just over a million people even registered to vote in a city of just under three million citizens!

Anyway, results can be found at the Chicago Board of Elections for the city and for the suburbs at Cook County Clerk’s Office.

First Congressional District
Donald E. Peloquin will face Democrat Bobby Rush (incumbent)

Second Congressional District
Brian Woodworth will face Democrat Jesse L. Jackson, Jr. (incumbent)

Third Congressional District
Richard Grabowski will face Daniel William Lipinski (incumbent)

Republicans did not put up a candidate in the Fourth District, Luis Gutierrez will continue in the Fourth

Fifth Congressional District
Dan Schmitt will face Democrat Mike Quigley (incumbent)

Republicans did not put up a candidate in the Seventh District, Danny Davis will continue in the Seventh

Eighth Congressional District
Joe Walsh (incumbent) will face Democrat Tammy Duckworth

Ninth Congressional District
Timothy C Wolfe will face Democrat Janice D. Schakowsky (incumbent)

Tenth Congressional District
Bob Dold (incumbent) will face Democrat Brad Schneider

Eleventh Congressional District

Other Congressional Seats

As to the other Congressional races, the big fight was between Don Manzullo and Adam Kinzinger for the reconfigured 16th District. Kinzinger beat long-time incumbent Manzullo and will be taking the nomination (and likely the Nov. election) for the 16th District.

Tom Weber, Republican for Lake County Board

From the Tom Weber campaign…

Through leadership and common sense, my goal is to set the standard for what being a good steward of the taxpayers’ trust is all about. I will be forward thinking, work to eliminate senseless regulations, and work towards eliminating wasteful spending.

I will be honored to represent my friends, neighbors and small business.
I am a small business owner and have been part of this community my entire life, and I want to help our community thrive once again.

The 3rd District is not only part of my history, but part of my family’s history as well. The Webers have lived and been employers in this community for over 100 years. As I walk the district and speak with people, many are not earning what they did 4 years ago. Many more are having a difficult time managing their own budgets. Any way that we can give the taxpayers relief will help. Its time to get creative to help them. As stewards of taxpayer money we need to learn how to do more with less.

Biden Gaffe: Condones Atrocities Against Women, Lake Co. Group Supports House Bill HR 2121 in Response

From Lake County Right to Life…

(Grayslake, IL – August 24, 2011) Speaking before an audience in Chengdu, China on Sunday, August 21, Joe Biden said he “fully understands” China’s One-child Policy and would “not second guess” it. Biden’s comments produced an immediate firestorm of criticism from other elected officials, women’s rights advocates, and pro-life groups, because the policy is widely considered one of the greatest human rights abuses in modern times. Biden spoke about the policy’s drawbacks only in demographic terms, comparing it to the US problem of too few younger workers to provide a safety net for retirees.

Instituted by the Chinese government in 1979 to deal with population growth, the policy has been widely condemned. Punishments include forced abortions and sterilizations, fines, and beatings. Both violators and those who help them are sent to prison and forced labor camps.

Reggie Littlejohn of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers (WRWF) states that “Chinese women are literally dragged out of their homes, strapped to tables and forced to abort.” She adds that the policy promotes gendercide—since the 400 million “prevented” births are mostly girls, “this gendercide gives rise to human trafficking and sexual slavery.”

Debt Ceiling Increase Shows Failed Leadership Lake County Tea Party Calls Increase Irresponsible and Hypocritical

From the Lake County Tea Party…

(Round Lake, IL – August 2, 2011) Lake County Tea Party today called the deal to raise the U.S. debt ceiling and any increase in deficit spending “a failure in leadership.” The Lake County Tea party maintains that the administration will not be able to successfully stabilize the economy through greater debt.

Tea Party Chairman Lennie Jarratt recalled a statement by then-Senator Barack Obama in March, 2006, during a previous debate on raising the debt ceiling. “Senator Obama stated that “the fact that we are here today to debate raising American’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.’” Jarratt pointed to the irony that the country’s debt has multiplied under the Obama Administration. He noted that the Tea Party is committed to educating voters on the virtues of fiscally responsible government at all levels and that “robbing Peter to pay Paul” is irresponsible.

Obama’s Media Passover: Rep. Walsh Takes it To The Media

-By Warner Todd Huston

Joe Walsh (R, 8th District), a Tea Party backed Congressman from Illinois, slams the Old Media on why Obama has been allowed to present not one, but two budgets without the media saying a word about it.

Exactly right, Joe. If any Republican president had issued a budget that failed to win any support and then was forced to make a second run at it, the media would be talking about nothing else but “the president’s first failed budget plan.” The media would be repeating this drumbeat over and over until even the second budget would be DOA because the president would have been so undermined.

But in this case, Obama failed miserably with his first budget offering and has come back to the table with a second one and the media has been wholly silent on the first failure, giving Obama a total pass on the debacle and treated as if his second proposal is the only one he’s ever presented.

Rep Joe Walsh on a Gov’t Shut Down

Newly minted Republican Congressman Joe Walsh of the 8th Illinois District recently spoke to CBS News about the possibility of a government shut down due to the Democrat’s reticence to come up with their own budget policies.

It should be remembered that the Democrats never DID pass a budget in 2010 and the House of Representatives newly taken over by the GOP is playing catch up.

Grayslake: Insider Deal Gets Plum Job for Retiring School Board Member

-By Warner Todd Huston

It must be nice to be School Board Member Michael Linder of Grayslake, Illinois. He seems awfully lucky to have landed a plum new job, paid for by the taxpayers of Lake County. Awfully lucky, indeed. In fact, he’s so lucky that one suspects an insider deal was made to get him that plum job.

Could it be? An insider political deal in Illinois?

As it happens, Linder was an elected member of the Grayslake School Board, District 46. But he suddenly found that he could no longer serve in that capacity. He resigned his term on November 10 of last year in the middle of a meeting. Then he up and left mumbling something about not wanting to be a lame duck.

Walsh will discuss his first week in Congress, the upcoming House agenda, and the events in Arizona over the weekend. Walsh looks forward to answering constituent questions on these and any topics.

All are welcome. The town hall will be held at the Wauconda Township Hall, located at 505 W. Bonner Road from 7-8:30pm Wednesday night.

Congressman Melissa “No Questions Please” Bean And Her Intimidating Enforcers

-By Warner Todd Huston

It is interesting to watch this video of a recent townhall held by Chicago area Congressman Melissa Bean (8th District). First she does her level best to avoid actually answering any questions and then when a constituent gets tired of the tap dancing she sends a guy that looks like a bar bouncer over to that person to stand over them in a threatening manner.

Notice that the enforcer comes over to intimidate not just the guy making the video here but another constituent, a middle aged woman.

Also I love the part about the questions. The congressman is right there for everyone to ask questions of her, yet she tells them to email her? Really? Email!?

If you’d like to contact the Round Lake Area Library where this happened, Lake County Tea Party has the contact info.

Good News: Big Money to be Made in Illinois. Bad news: it’s in Government

-By Warner Todd Huston

With recent revelations that the city manager of the small, mostly low-income Hispanic community of Bell, California makes nearly $800,000 a year and that its police chief makes almost $500,000 yearly, the spotlight might be leveled at city employees all across the country. Illinois, as it happens, is no better for the squandering of such cash, it appears.

On July 31, the Chicago Tribune reported that the an executive of the Highland Park, Illinois park district makes $435,203 a year. And then there were the big bonuses.

For All Teachers’ Whining, Almost Half of Chicago Area Teachers Make $100K a Year

-By Warner Todd Huston

As the Obama economy tumbles farther and farther down into depression, as states begin to face the reality of a budget crunch that can only be solved by layoffs of public employees, and as teachers find they are open to those layoffs, we commonly hear teachers claim that they are perennially underpaid and don’t deserve layoffs. Yet the Chicago Tribune has found that nearly half the teachers in many of Chicago’s ritziest suburbs are making over $100,000 a year in salary.

The Tribune reviewed the salary information of 132,000 Illinois teachers and in Highland Park, Deerfield, Park Ridge, Hinsdale, and other Chicago area suburbs it found that in some cases half the teachers — and in other cases over 40% — make $100K yearly (not including benefits) even as the educational system in Illinois crying poor and cutting staff.

Lake County: Another Fake Republican Running in Local Race?

-By Warner Todd Huston

These are the kinds of underhanded games played on voters that really make me despair that the is a single honest Democrat in the world — or maybe even a single honest politician in general. Nancy Thorner writes of the fake candidacy one Mike Clark in the 58th State Rep. District which is mostly in Lake County, Ill.

As it happens Clark’s original filing papers identify him as a Democrat as well as a resident of Cook County, yet he’s running as a Republican/independent. Thorner surmises that Clark is just another one of those dirty tricks, another one of those oh-so-common Democrat fake candidates foisted on voters to confuse them and to get them to split up the vote in order to help a particular candidate.

In this case, the Democrats want the Republicans to split their votes between fake candidate Clark and legitimate Republican candidate Lauren Turelli — who ran unopposed in the GOP Primary — so that incumbent Democrat Karen May will again win in November.

10th District: GOP’s Bob Dold on Jobs

From the Dold for Congress campaign (10th District)…

Our National unemployment rate rose to 9.9% last month and the unemployment rate in Illinois is even higher, now at 11.5%. There is some good news in these numbers as our country created 290,000 net new jobs in April, and there is evidence that workers who had given up seeking work reentered the search for employment.

There remain, however, an unacceptable number of people unemployed. We must not accept this as a “new normal” and herald an economy that leaves millions of people without work. Our Federal government deserves much of the blame for the slow recovery of our jobs market.

Why are the Collar Counties Going GOP? Fiscal Responsibility

-By Warner Todd Huston

Over at Chicago’s NBC blog The Ward Room, Edward McClelland posits that the reason both Mark Kirk and Bill Brady are winning in current polls in the collar counties — those counties surrounding Cook, Chicago’s home — is because Quinn can’t balance a budget and Giannoulias was a failed banker. It’s about fiscal responsibility, says McClelland.

McClelland quotes a poll from the extremist left-winger website the Daily Kos that finds that Republican Kirk leads Democrat Giannoulias 41-38 in the hunt for Obama’s old Senate seat. Anecdotally interesting, yes. Proof of actual numbers, I’m not so sure. There is little of any worth to anything on the Daily Kos, but if even that wholly slanted website is showing Giannoulias down one might take that as a sign that it is true that Kirk is leading at this time.

Conservative Bob Cook Takes Lake Co. GOP Boss Slot

-By Warner Todd Huston

Congratulations goes to Bob Cook of Wauconda for being elected as the new Lake County Republican Party Chairman.

Former chair Dan Venturi withdrew his bid to keep his position after it became clear that he’d likely have lost to Cook. Venturi said withdrawing was an act of unity so that Cook could be elected unanimously.

Some grumbling about Venturi occurred when he backed Maria Rodriguez for Congress in the recent GOP primary. Instead candidate Joe Walsh handily won the 8th District primary. Venturi was considered “out of touch” by some and a pawn of House GOP leader Tom Cross by others.

For his part, though, Cook says that picking candidates in a primary is a mistake that he won’t make. As chairman, Cook says he’ll never endorse candidates in a primary.

The Daily Herald claims that Cook’s elevation to party boss “represents a growing conservative trend among party members.” I am not sure there is any state-wide evidence for that, but it is good to see conservatives finally being represented in the Illinois GOP nonetheless.

So, congratulations to Bob Cook, Lake County GOP Chairman.
