Governor Bobby Jindal gives a speech at the Rally For Economic Survival in Lafayette, Louisiana. Over 11,000 people gathered at the Cajun Dome to protest what they say is an assault on Louisiana’s economy by President Barack Obama.

“The fact that the federal government can’t do its job shouldn’t cost thousands of Louisianans OUR jobs.”

Boycott The Boycotters

-By Frederick Meekins

Most Americans are no doubt aware of the tragedy of the oil slick coating the Gulf Coast from the damaged petroleum rig. What they might not be aware of is the attitude among elites of how we as citizens and consumers are simply to go along with whatever position they craft as a response regarding the matter.

A headline from the 5/25/10 online edition of the Washington Post bemoans “For Some Washington Drivers, Convenience Outweighs Calls For BP Gas Boycott”. The story laments the tendency of certain consumers who “…prioritize convenience over taking a moral or political stand.”

For starters, in this day where it is constantly pounded into our heads that no one is to impose their views on any one else or to even dare to suggest that certain values might be superior to others, on what grounds are we expected to do something because someone with no real binding authority over us tells us to?

Obama Wants to Talk Energy… Well, Except for BP Spill

-By Warner Todd Huston

On one hand the administration and its cohorts in the Democrat majority want to use the BP oil spill as an excuse to wildly raise taxes on energy, to instill cap and trade, and to excuse more regulations in order to take control of as much of our national economy as possible, yet on the other hand when he called leaders of both parties together to talk energy Obama forbade any discussion of the BP oil disaster.

Obama obviously wants his cake and wants to eat it, too. He wants to be able to use this “good crisis” — in Chief of Staff Rham Emanuel’s words — to excuse all his attempts to grab more power and raise taxes to further hamper our economic recovery, yet when it’s time to discuss energy he doesn’t want to be bothered with questions about why his administration has failed so miserably to find solutions to the BP spill. Obama contends that the oil spill has nothing to do with energy policy, except when it does, apparently.

During the bipartisan meeting of 20 Senators Obama dismissed any injection of the BP spill into the discussion with a wave of his hand and his usual upturned nose saying, “That’s just your talking point” when Republican Senators brought up the matter.

Tax Hike Fever: Obama is ‘Arresting the Victim After He’s Been Mugged’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Steve Everley has a piece at TownHall.com that is one of those “of course they are” moments. As we all know, White House Chief of Staff claimed that he and his comrades would never let a good crisis go to waste and Everley reminds us that the BP oil spill is just another “crisis” to be used as an excuse to raise taxes as far as Democrats are concerned.

Naturally, the BP spill serves as a “reason” for Obama to try and impose new energy taxes that will help further crush our economy into the dust. “By their economic logic,” Everley says, “an accident that is already costing jobs and millions of dollars of economic losses in the Gulf requires imposing more taxes that will cost even more jobs and billions of more dollars in economic losses in both the Gulf and across the country.”

In a clever turn of phrase, Everley says that Obama’s big tax hiking plans is “tantamount to arresting the victim after he was mugged.” Sad but true, sad but true.

Obama’s Drilling Moratorium a Sop to Unions?

-By Warner Todd Huston

The president of the Seafarers International Union’s Gulf Coast District, Dean Corgey, recently penned an op ed in which he noted an interesting fact: deepwater oil drilling rigs are “100 percent non-union.” With this in mind one of union bought president Barack Obama’s major decisions — in fact, one of his few actual decisions — in the BP Oil mess was to shut down the very oil rigs that unions have been trying to organize for decades with a six-month moratorium.

Naturally, as is evident by Corgey’s op ed, unions are claiming the whole BP incident is a result of non-union workers and with Obama trying to shut down these platforms he lends credence to the union claims. Unions are sure to try and use the moratorium as a reason to convince skeptics against organizing workers of deepwater rigs.

But unions or no, Obama’s moratorium will potentially cause 120,000 jobs to be lost in the Gulf area just when the economy of the Gulf states is at its worst.

Obama Fail: Hundreds of Oil Skimmers NOT Being Used in Gulf

-By Warner Todd Huston

Ken Marrero alerted me to this video of Florida Senator George LeMieux alerting the world that there are hundreds of oil skimmers across the country and the federal government has refused to allow them to be transferred to the Gulf to help in the cleanup because — get this — there may be an oil spill somewhere else and they might be needed there.

As LeMieux says, that this “logic” is like not sending a firetruck to a house fire because some other house might catch fire and the truck might be needed for that possible fire.

The folks at The Shark Tank conducted this interesting interview.

BP and the Unmitigated Disaster

-By Alan Caruba

The Gulf of Mexico could turn into a giant dead zone if some means cannot be found to staunch the flow of oil and toxic gases emerging from the damaged well beneath the Deepwater Horizon. Industry insiders who understand the engineering of wells are beginning to speak openly among themselves of an unmitigated disaster.

It is essential to understand that the oil business is like no other. Oil companies that drill too many dry holes go out of business. Oil is too often in places run by despots and gangsters that would make Hollywood villains seem tame by comparison. Oil companies must deal with them even at the risk they will renege on their promises; something they do a lot.

The oil business depends on technology that attempts to give geologists an idea of what is hidden way below the surface of the land or water. It often means having to team up with your competitors to finance an operation such as building a pipeline so both can move their crude oil to refineries.

Trouble on Oiled Waters

-By John Armor

At most times and in some circumstances presidential speeches carry weight far beyond the actual words spoken or written. A President’s verbal gaff can start a war, rather than prevent one. A slight mistake by a President can cause American, or even international, markets to collapse, rather than stabilize.

There is a second point of great importance. Even if a President uses the best words and concepts to address any issue or crisis, those who hear those words – Americans or foreigners, friends or foe – must take his statements seriously. To be effective, a President must be believable, at least to most of the people whom he seeks to influence with his comments.

With those points in mind, we turn to President Obama’s speech Tuesday night from the Oval Office on the subject of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Atlanta Journal Columnist Tucker Says USA is ‘The Enemy’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Columnist Cynthia Tucker of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a 2007 Pulitzer Prize winner, has found the enemy and he is us. During a recent episode of the Chris Matthews show, Tucker decided that because we are “addicted to petroleum” we are our own enemy just as much as communism was our enemy during the Cold War.

Tucker characterizes our “addiction” to oil as an “external threat” — just like communism was — and presents oil as an enemy that we should defeat. Tucker also makes excuses for Obama saying that it’s “harder” for him to call on Americans to sacrifice because of this addiction.

Leave it to a member of the Old Media to construe capitalism, progress, a growing standard of living, and even our own fellow citizens to be as great an enemy as an antithetical foreign system that was sponsored by those that promised to destroy us. Leave it to a member of the Old Media to pinpoint our own system as the enemy.

Oil Spill in Gulf Maybe Godsend After All

-By Kevin Roeten

Eleven dead. Hundreds out of work. Thousands of wildlife coated with oil and likely will not survive the night. The pessimists continually talk about the leak size from the Deepwater Horizon. Nature is guaranteed to hurt for months—much more so for the gulf residents dependent on wildlife for a living.

The ‘forgotten’ part is 3 separate leaks from Deepwater piping are overcoming a mile of seawater pressure (2250psi) from the Gulf without any pumping, pushing, or prodding. That’s not including the pressure it takes to overcome 18,000 ft of rock and sand before traversing the 5000 ft depth of the gulf waters.

About 40-100 million gallons have exited so far. We know the 2006 Assessment of Undiscovered OCS Oil and Gas Resources results …(from DOI) using seismic oil discovery, shows enough recoverable oil in the US outer continental shelf (OCS) to make us oil independent from Persian Gulf imports for almost 60 years.

Kinzinger Says BP Should be Held Accountable (11th District)

-By Warner Todd Huston

11th District Republican candidate for Congress Adam Kinzinger has come out with his stance on the BP oil mess down in the gulf. But while Kinzinger offers his ideas on BPs culpability, his opponent incumbent Democrat Congressman Debbie Halvorson is less interested in serious discussion and more interested in turning the BP oil mess into a personal fund raising device.

For his part, Kinzinger says that the full force of the U.S. government should be used to focus on the clean-up and to stop the leaking well.

If he were in Congress, Kinzinger said he would press President Obama to basically use the full force of the federal government to cap the gushing well. Also, to support oil well owner British Petroleum in what it has to do.

“And to open dialog with other oil companies and say, ‘What do you guys have,’ and to other nations and say, ‘What kind of boats can you guys bring down here to help us skim the oil off,'” he said.

Kinzinger also notes that Obama has yet to waive the Jones Act so that foreign companies and governments can offer us assistance. Currently Obama has only accepted a very few of the dozens of foreign companies and nations that have offered us their expertise.

Even George W. Bush knew enough to waive the Jones Act when we need it in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Obama’s Non Sequitur

-By Dan Scott

President Obama’s recent speech on the progress of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico seems to have come up short for many people. While insisting he was in charge of the whole oil spill clean up and oil well plugging operation, he still didn’t take responsibility for the incoherence of the clean up process. It goes without saying that if you can’t take responsibility for the failure, you can’t take credit for the success much less engage in corrective action.

Near the end, President Obama turned to his campaign promise, the enactment of Cap & Trade as a means to reduce or eliminate the need to drill in deep water. Furthermore, he pushed wind generation and solar panels as the implied solution. There is only one wee little problem with Obama’s solution; oil for the most part isn’t used to produce electricity. Wind and solar are not alternatives to oil but to natural gas, coal and nuclear power in order to produce electricity. Now as President of the United States surely Obama has access to the EIA (Energy Information Agency) which publishes on the internet for everyone to see how the US uses oil, natural gas, coal, nuclear, wind, solar, etc.

Please take a moment to review the facts as presented by the EIA.

Success, But Not in the Gulf

-By John Armor

When you’ve been writing weekly for 16 years, occasionally the question comes up: what on God’s green Earth am I going to talk about now? I was going to write about the Jones Act.

That Act requires that ships operating in American waters be American-owned with American crews. Not stated in the law is its real purpose. The maritime unions have a headlock on American shipboard workers. So, the Jones Act requires, in reality, that all ships operating in American waters generate dues for the unions which translate into funds to elect Democrats.

Skimmer ships are sitting idle in foreign ports though they were offered at the beginning to help us. They could be on the job weeks ago, if the Administration had “waived the Jones Act,” which other Administrations have done in other emergencies. But not this one. This Administration remains loyal to the unions, while beaches, fish and birds die by the day from oil that was not skimmed away at sea.

There’s an old saying in Maryland politics, “An honest politician is one who, once he’s bought, stays bought.” But that’s not what I came to talk about.

OPEC Wins Again!

-By Vince Johnson

While destroying retirement plans in the U.K.

Barack Obama has inspired OPEC to boost the price of oil!

By requiring PB to cancel dividend payments to all shareholders (including U.K. retirees) and drastically limiting oil production in the U.S., he has created political diversions that will make it irresistibly expedient for OPEC to increase the price of oil to rates substantially higher levels than they are today.

The fact that the DNC openly supports Obama’s strategy is strong evidence that their first and foremost concern is focused more upon OPEC objectives than they are upon the needs of taxpaying citizens of the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

‘Oil Addiction’ Lies

-By Alan Caruba

Next to the huge international hoax about global warming allegedly caused by carbon dioxide, the biggest lie being told to Americans these days is that we are “addicted” to oil and that we must convert our economy and society away from its use.

The first time I recall hearing this was during George W. Bush’s 2006 State of the Union Speech and, frankly, I was astounded to hear it from the son of a former President who made his fortune in oil. The latest to repeat the lie is President Barack Obama, but he is allied with environmental organizations that are anti-energy no matter what form it takes.

Americans and everyone else around the world are not “addicted” to oil or other forms of energy sources such as coal and natural gas. They are used to maintain and enhance modern life.

Data from 2006 makes it abundantly clear that 85.5% of the electricity we use comes from carbon-based fuels. Nuclear and hydroelectric energy add over 20% of the rest. All that magical “clean” energy, solar and wind, provides 3% or less of the electricity the nation requires.

Unions Preventing a Timely Cleanup of Oil in the Gulf?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Joseph Carafano of the Heritage Foundation has made an interesting observation and wonders if President Obama is allowing unions to make it harder to effect a timely and effective cleanup of the BP oil spill in the Gulf?

The offer of aid from foreign companies has been refused by the Obama administration and the Jones Act is cited as the reason why Obama will not allow foreign ships to enter our waters to assist in the cleanup.

The Jones Act is a 1920s protectionist law put in place to assure that boats and crews working in American waters are American crews and union members. Carafano thinks that Obama is using the Jones Act as a sop to unions despite what it is doing to slow the cleanup.

“Cause this is a big thing for unions,” Carafano said. “The unions see it as … protecting jobs. They hate when the Jones Act gets waived, and they pound on politicians when they do that. So … are we giving in to unions and not doing everything we can, or is there some kind of impediment that we don’t know about?

Once again, just as with car manufacturing and education, we see unions getting in the way of best practices, safety, and the creation of the optimal American lifestyle. In this case, we see President Obama paying unions back as wildlife dies and the livelihood of millions of American is destroyed for decades to come.

Lead, Follow or Get Out of the Way

-By Dan Scott

President Obama during his news conference took great pains to impress upon the public and notably the MSM that he was in charge and was so since day one. He proclaimed on the very first day he had put together a special situational awareness group just to track the progress of the oil spill. So let’s take President Obama at his word that he was in charge since day one and that the buck stopped with him. Let’s look at three of his decisions since the major oil leak turned into an ecological catastrophe of historic proportions.

The government for some years now had worked out a contingency plan for just such an oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. The well-researched protocol called for a burn off of the fresh crude oil reaching the water’s surface to prevent it from dispersing and drifting to the Gulf Coast. In the event of a massive spill there were only two alternatives, burn it off OR disperse it. The problem with dispersants and why ships in port normally ban its use is it contaminates the water column making it potentially poisonous to all marine life. This is on top of the potential poisonous nature of the dispersant itself. Once the magnitude of the spill became clear, only a few days were available to burn off the crude before it dispersed too widely for an effective burn off. President Obama, the man who claims to be in charge in essence made the fateful decision to disregard the oil spill protocol and dither thus forcing the use of dispersant to mitigate the damage to the estuaries. You may want to defend him to say, people in the various agencies made these decisions such as the EPA, NOAA, USCG, Army Corps of Engineers and MMS. However, as the man in charge, the buck stops with him and as such not only is he responsible for their actions because he hand picked most of the department heads, he was fully apprised every step of the way. The insight here is President Obama’s management style of decision by committee, where he, the President gets the credit for all the correct decisions and anytime a wrong decision is made someone gets thrown under the bus. Hence Elizabeth Birnbaum (hand picked by Obama) of MMS falls on her sword, resigning because she was responsible for the lack of monthly inspections of the oilrig that never took place while Obama was in office. Yes apparently inspections didn’t occur under George W Bush’s watch either, however, missing 15 months worth is still way too many to claim Bush did it when Obama’s hand picked leader was running the show.

Energy Policy? What Energy Policy?

-By Alan Caruba

When the government controls the provision of energy, it controls the lives of all citizens and the growth or failure of the nation’s economy. Everything else, including national defense, runs second when it comes to this single factor.

Recently the fourth annual survey of more than a hundred executives in the U.S. and Canadian electric and natural gas industries was released by Platts and Capgemini. Platts is a global provider of energy and metals information and Capgemini is a leading provider of consulting, technology and outsourcing services. The objective of the survey was to determine the opinion of energy industry executives regarding the first year and a half of the Obama administration’s energy policies.

The Obama administration’s energy policy is to have as little as possible.

Silver Lining of Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

-By Kevin Roeten

In one of the worst oil spill disasters of the century, you can always count on the creme rising to the top. True, 11 riggers lost their life when the BP Deepwater Horizon blew up and caught fire. President Obama is under the impression that no more oil drilling can be done offshore for fear of an environmental catastrophe. Why does he ignore what becomes crystal clear from the accident? The fact that crude is seeping through the ocean floor, and is especially pronounced in the Gulf, indicates it’s in the Gulf in vast quantities.

The failed blowout preventer in the Deepwater Horizon leaking the oil is under 5000 feet of water, and we know a foot of water provides 0.4335 lbs/in2 at 1 foot deep. Therefore, at 5000 feet of water, there is ~ 2000 lbs/in2 of water pressure the oil has to overcome at the blowout preventer. Bottom line, the oil wants to escape its entrapment—badly. That does not include the 18,000 additional feet the oil must traverse through earth before it even gets to the 5000 ft ocean depth. At a 22,000 foot depth, the oil could easily be abiotic, instead of biotic.

Trans. Sec LaHood: Forget Your Car, Ride a Bike

-By Warner Todd Huston

Apparently Sec. of Transportation Ray LaHood thinks he lives in France, or maybe Amsterdam, or some such tiny, closed-in country. That is the only conclusion I can come to with his idiotic statements recently given to CNSNews. On May 3, LaHood announced a snazzy, wondermous, neato and momentous “sea change” in American transportation, a great idea whose time had come. And that great idea was: Everyone should ride a bike to work.

Most Americans live between 10 and 25 miles away from their places of work so Americans spend at least a half hour one way in their cars going to work. In 2005, for instance, it was estimated by the federal government that the average drive-time for America’s workers was 24.3 minutes. Adding the rest of the day’s traveling needs, a University of California study found that we spend some 101 minutes a day driving.

Obama’s Biggest Lobbyist Winners from Left-Wing Advocacy Organizations

-By Warner Todd Huston

On the campaign trail, now President Obama regularly excoriated lobbyists. He said he’d make the government “open and transparent” and said he’d make it hard for lobbyists to “curry favor” with his administration “based on how much they can spend on a fancy dinner.” Once elected, John Podesta, a member of his transition team, said that Obama would be implementing the “strictest ethics rules ever applied” to those scoundrel lobbyists. In his 2009 State of the Union address Obama puffed up his chest, proud of himself that he “excluded lobbyists” from important jobs in his administration.

With all that bombast and populist wind from Obama and his cohorts, then, one would expect to see a dearth of lobbyists in important positions in Obama’s Washington. One’s expectation, however, would easily be dashed by the truth.

Remember the rarefied air of Obama’s campaign for president? Wanna see some, shall we say, “broken promises”?

GOP’s Hayes: Coastal Drilling Long Welcomed News

From the Hayes for Congress campaign (2nd District)…

CHICAGO: The following statement was released today by Isaac Hayes, GOP Nominee for Congress in Illinois’ 2nd district, in response to President Obama’s announcement to open American coastlines to oil and natural gas drilling.

“The President’s announcement to allow drilling along America’s coastline is long welcomed news. The off shore drilling ban has been an unwanted and unneeded moratorium on energy exploration. For years, Republicans have pushed for energy independence by utilizing the vast resources God has blessed our nation with. While I am pleased that America’s plea for freedom from dependence on sponsors of terror is finally being heard, I am cautiously optimistic that this is not a smoke screen for a soon to come cap-and-trade bill jammed down our throats.”

What James Madison said about Hope and Change

-By Dan Scott

What would the Founding Fathers say about our handling of the country if they were able to comment on the current state of affairs? It is easy to put words in their mouths but fortunately, we have for posterity recorded their words and intents to refer to for clarity in times of need. Some may say that this is a new day and age, therefore what the Founding Fathers had to say is simply not relevant to our current circumstances. Those who say this do so in ignorance of human nature and for self-serving reasons. Humans over the past 5000 years of recorded history may have advanced in terms of knowledge; however, their motivations and emotions are still no different now then they were in the past. It is motivation and emotion that govern human character, not knowledge and the Founding Fathers knew well the passions that influence those in power.

We were warned 200+ years ago against fickle governments. In fact, we were warned that the point of fickleness in government was for the few to gain an advantage at the expense of the many. Here is what James Madison had to say about Hope and Change as espoused by Barack Obama when he said he wanted to remake our society:
