Anti-Gun Argument, Always Pure Hysterics

-By Warner Todd Huston

The anti-gun argument is always built solely upon emotional excess. It’s all about “feelings” and “fears” and almost never built on any facts or reality. In another example of the kind of hand-wringing, excessive, faux compassion that ignores the real statistics we are so used to, the Charlotte Observer has given space to one of their propagandists… I mean writers… to vent against the evil gun, once again.

The Observer’s Dannye Romine-Powell (God save us from another hyphenated named, female liberal) gets all amush over the “unruffled thinking” of her gun hating husband and tries her hand at citing statistics to such poor effect that it is embarrassing. But her empty argument very much embodies that which lies at the heart of the anti-Constitutional crowd.

Those Deliberately Playing In Traffic Should Get Run Over

-By Frederick Meekins

Commonsense teaches that, if one deliberately with aforethought puts oneself into oncoming traffic, one is going to get run over. As such, that is what you deserve.

To some, such a sentiment brings to mind elderly grandmothers crossing the street and young children absentmindedly chasing after an errant ball. However, that is not what I am referring to.

Those I am referring to are protestors and self-appointed revolutionaries thinking that they are so important and much more better than you that they somehow have the right to literally bring your life to a screeching halt to compel you to listen to their juvenile tantrums by impeding the flow of oncoming traffic

Two incidents in recent months hint that this tactic may become more prevalent in the future as leftists ratchet up their propensity towards mayhem and violence in an attempt to intimidate the American people into acquiescing to their socialistic demands.

What IS Wrong With Ron Paul?

-By Warner Todd Huston

I have been watching with interest the candidacy of Libertarian Ron Paul. Like many, I’ve been wondering what the heck he is doing in this race in the first place. Let’s face it, even in the GOP field of candidates he doesn’t fit in well. Naturally, he is a whipping boy for the GOP establishment… well, maybe just a laughing stock, would be more accurate. But, there is real substance to Mr. Paul, a substance that is all too easy to gloss over by focusing on his quirks. And he does serve a very important purpose; he helps bring the debate to the right, a necessary pull with Mitt the Malleable and Rudy the lefty in the race.

Being of a libertarian bent myself, I see a lot of merit in Mr. Paul’s focus on taking government out of things as opposed to trying to find new and expansive (not to mention expensive) ways for government to meddle in our lives. His voice is a welcome change in this direction.

However, his chief flaw is his overly simplistic approach to the war — and this is the single most important issue of our day. This is the main reason he is uncredible as a possible president one who, should he be elected, would have to deal far more with foreign threats and diplomacy than that of other, past presidents.

Last Sunday’s debate was a prime example of the unsuitability of his candidacy for our times. From his constant and easily ridiculed use of the word “Neocons” in practically every answer he gave, to his policy suggestion that we “just leave” Iraq as if it were merely a bad movie we could walk out on with no consequences, made him look… well… off his nut.

Hacker Proves How MSM is Fooled by al Qaeda Photochopped Images

-By Warner Todd Huston

At the Black Hat computer Hacker’s conference held in Las Vegas last week, Neal Krawetz of “Hacker Factor” showed how easily the MSM has been tricked into believing the fake images that al Qaeda has offered to further their propaganda. Krawetz specifically referred to two images, one the July 27, 2006 image of al Qaeda second in command al-Zawahiri supposedly sitting in a modern television studio. It was an image that had the tongues of the MSM and pundits alike wagging. How is it, they clucked, that al-Zawahiri could be sitting in a modern television studio yet still could not be found?

Krawetz demonstrated how the elements of the two images, however, are special effects and not real.

Krawetz showed another image of al-Zawahiri from July 27, 2006, showing him seated in what appears to be a television studio. Krawetz said many people who saw this video were outraged that he could sitting in a television studio somewhere, yet the U.S. government couldn’t find him.

Image analysis suggests that the studio and the various pictures positioned in the studio around him were added later. Again, a halo around al-Zawahiri suggests that he was shot in front of a monochromatic screen and pasted into a new background.

The fake TV studio image sure fooled Tucker Carlson of MSNBC’s The Situation Room. On January 30th Tucker said:

Of justice and the fullness of hearts

-By Michael M. Bates

When Charles Schumer speaks, people laugh. Sadly, some folks also listen, possibly because he’s the third ranking member of the Democratic Senate leadership. In that lofty capacity it’s the New York solon’s right, nay, responsibility, to chatter inanely.

Schumer recently warned that, unless there are what he deems extraordinary circumstances, he’ll try to block any future Supreme Court appointments made by this president. So we have yet another reason to be thankful that Chief Justice John Roberts appears to be OK.

The Chief Justice and Justice Sam Alito, both of whom were nominated by the current President Bush, are the cause of Mr. Schumer’s threat. He now says the Senate was “hoodwinked” by them. He’s particularly miffed about Justice Alito. In addressing the American Constitution Society last week, Schumer said:

“Without question, my greatest regret in the 109th Congress was not doing more to block Alito. Alito shouldn’t have been confirmed. I should have done a better job; my colleagues said we didn’t have the votes, but I think we should have twisted more arms and done more.”

Twisted more arms. Yep, definitely he’s affiliated with the right party.

AP Legitimizes Generbender With Idaho Inmate Who Castrated ‘Herself’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Is it so hard to tell a male human being from a female one? I guess to the AP it is because in a story from the 31st, the tale they told of a male inmate castrating himself with a broken disposable razor blade became the story of a male inmate castrating “herself” with a razor blade. One wonders what the AP Stylebook says about that little gem?

BOISE, Idaho – An inmate who castrated herself with a disposable razor blade after prison officials refused to treat her for gender identity disorder should have female hormone therapy paid for by the state, a federal judge said.

Someone should inform the AP that a female cannot castrate herself. It is a physical impossibility. If’n ya gots something to castrate, you ain’t no woman in the first place!

Journalist’ Shield Law to Protect Bloggers, too!

-By Warner Todd Huston

Here is a bit of good news from the House of Representatives that affects all of us here on the blogosphere. As reported by J.A. Dlouhy of the Hearst Newspapers, new “legislation that would protect journalists from being forced to reveal confidential sources” has passed the House Judiciary committee. The good news is that this legislation will also cover bloggers.

The bill would cover all journalists, and it broadly defines that group so that in some cases, bloggers and other nontraditional members of the Fourth Estate would get protection.

The Department of Justice is trying to fight this legislation, but so far it has wide bi-partisan support.

Only one thing worries me. That it might have been watered down too far to please the Justice Dept.

I Don’t Dislike Democrats, I Oppose the Progressive-Left

-By Frank Salvato

Too often those who opine on political matters make the mistake of directing their criticism – or accolades – toward a generalized group when in fact the comments are meant for a more specific faction commingled within that group. I, at least on a few occasions, stand guilty as charged. This type of generalization has contributed to the coarse ideological divisions in our country and has become the modus operandi of politicos and pundits alike, from all avenues of political thought. At a time when our nation is embroiled in a critical struggle for survival and in an effort to realize a more cohesive American political and social culture, I believe it may behoove those of us who scrutinize and maintain a comprehensive understanding of politics and events surrounding the elected-class to start correctly identifying the groups with which we take issue.

For the record, the Progressive-Left is an aggressive faction currently ensconced within the Democrat Party. Where most Progressive-Leftists are Democrat (some of the more extreme are Green and even Socialist or Communist), most Democrats are not Progressive-Leftists. In fact, where mainstream Democrats and Republicans are concerned, we, as thoughtful Americans, have much more in common than not, explaining why an overwhelming majority of the American public considers themselves moderate or mainstream in their political leanings.

I do not dislike Democrats. The realty of the matter is that I have many friends who are Democrats. While I have many differences with their ideology and their views for how best to execute the caretaking of our government and country, I don’t dislike them as people. In fact, I embrace and appreciate the opportunity to engage in thoughtful and intellectual debate on issues important to our nation with those of differing opinions. When two or more patriotic and sincere parties set out to express their ideas and concerns regarding the stewardship of our government and the path forward for our nation it can only be described as the quintessential American political experience.

In many cases, when the elected class engages in honest debate, where the true goal of the matter is the well-being of our country and our people, it produces a positive and quality product. Honest, impassioned debate is what established the floors of the US House of Representatives and the US Senate as two of the greatest debating platforms in history.

Media Highlighting Republican ‘Culture of Corruption’ Ignoring Dems Troubles

-By Warner Todd Huston

Well, the L.A.Times certainly followed the Democratic National Committee’s stylebook for reporting the News with this one, it is obvious. In a story about the new “sweeping ethics bill” making its way through Congress this week, they mention all the Republican corruption they can dredge up, but somehow miss every single Democrat example of the same. They also misreport a Nancy Pelosi rules change that makes it seem as if she is a corruption fighter when the truth is that she backed off from the very rule the Times cites as an example of how “ethical” the House is! This one is a perfect example of partisan, agenda driven “reporting,” for sure.

So, the L.A.Times gives us the hero Democrat Party who has quashed that “culture of corruption” and cleaned up Congress’ “sullied image.” Yaaa, Democrats and boo Republicans who are so “corrupt.” Read on for some fair-and-balancedness that’ll curl yer hair!

New York Times Inadvertently Damns Democrats

-By Thomas E. Brewton

The problem is that the Times can’t recognize economic cause and effect.

Today’s New York Times editorial page opines, in A Factory Farm Near You:

Once upon a time, only a decade or so, it wasn’t hard to know where factory hog farms were because they were nearly all in North Carolina. But since those days, the practice of crowding together huge concentrations of animals — hogs, poultry, dairy cows, beef cattle — in the interests of supposed efficiency has spread around the country.

Wherever it appears, factory farming has two notable effects. It threatens the environment, because of huge concentrations of animal manure and lax regulation. And it threatens local political control. Residents who want a say over whether and where factory farms, whose stench can be overwhelming, can be built find their voices drowned out by the industry’s cash and lobbying clout.

Ironically, the ill complained of by the Times is the creation of their very own liberal-Progressive-socialist confreres, dating back to 1933. A considerable element in what the Times calls “supposed efficiency” is the large-scale production subsidized by Federal hand-outs.

Slate Attacks Plagiarizing Journalists

-By Warner Todd Huston

Slate is no tool of the “vast right wing conspiracy,” for sure (and neither is its parent company the Washington Post), so it is pretty amazing to see a Slate contributor take his fellow liberal journalists to task in so stark a manner. But, for once, Slate is dead right on this one, folks. The “Journalism” biz never takes their plagiarizing miscreants to task and never makes them pay, but Jack Shafer sure did last Friday.

This time Shafer’s ire is leveled at writer Michael Finkel who is famous for having invented a story that appeared in National Geographic about the slave labor of a small boy purportedly living on an Ivory Coast cocoa plantation. Yet here he is getting work once again in the MSM as if he was a trustworthy and professional writer even after an admission of his lies.

Shafer rips Finkel to pieces saying at one point, “If I had the constitution of a hanging judge, which I don’t, I’d have sent Finkel directly to the gallows for his [slave story] lies.”

But, more important than his ripping of writer Finkel, Shafer gives us a great reference to a study that proves that hardly any writer caught stealing others’ words or making stories up out of whole cloth ever gets held to account in the MSM.

Liberals Ratchet Up the Violence Meter

-By Thomas E. Brewton

Christopher Hitchins and Richard Dawkins, in their violent attacks on spiritual religion, sound very much like Adolph Hitler and Joseph Goebbels.

Herr Hitler and his propaganda minister needed a scape goat to explain the collapse of German militarism in World War I and the German Empire’s wallowing into fecklessness under the socialist Weimar Republic. As the world knows to its sorrow, they found the scape goat.

Messrs. Hitchins and Dawkins see a terribly disordered world that they blame upon religion. Mr. Hitchins, in god is not Great, repeats every few pages: “Religion poisons everything.” Mr. Dawkins, in The Blind Watchmaker, wrote:

It is absolutely safe to say that, if you meet someone who claims not to believe in evolution, that person is ignorant, stupid or insane (or wicked, but I’d rather not consider that).

Rather than accepting that the evils they recount are products of inherently sinful human nature, they choose to blame spiritual religion for human nature. Rather than recognizing that Judeo-Christianity strives to turn human nature toward moral conduct, they blame spiritual religion for failing to do so in all cases.

Is Immigration Really an “All American” Idea?

-By Warner Todd Huston

The plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty sums up the general assumption most people have about where immigration fits into American principles. “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore,” the famously inscribed tablet goes. “Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

For most people that about settles it. We are a “nation of immigrants.” It’s as American as baseball and apple pie. Not very long ago, I made this very claim in a discussion about the anchor baby issue. It seemed to me that since this was a nation of immigrants, we couldn’t be intellectually honest and exclude people of foreign birth from having their children born on US soil being given automatic citizenship as set forth under the 14th Amendment. It was a natural assumption to make, but not one entirely informed. It was a matter that several letter writers quickly took me to school for seeking to disabuse me of my naive notions.

Since then, and after further study, I have reassessed my view on the matter. I have seen that the issue of immigration is not as cut-and-dried as it might seem, either currently or historically.

Now comes Thomas E. Woods, Jr. to try to simplify the anti-immigration point even further in a new book titled “33 Questions About American History You’re Not Supposed to Ask” (Crown Forum, 2007, $25.95). One of the “33 Questions” Woods asks and then answers is that of the immigration issue as far as the Founding Fathers were concerned with it. Fittingly, since it’s one of today’s most pressing issues, the immigration question starts the book off with chapter one; “Did the Founding Fathers Support Immigration?”

About immigration, Woods says, “… many people still assume that the right of immigration is a hallowed American principle that no loyal citizen can consistently oppose.” He claims, though, that “this assumption is false.” He also says, “The Founding Fathers were generally wary of immigrants, and many of them warned about the consequences for the United States if immigration levels were not limited.”

So, that’s basically a “no” as far as Woods is concerned. The Founders were not for untrammeled immigration and wanted limits to it. Woods focuses on the Founders anti-immigration points and clearly wishes the reader to feel they were generally against it.

SFChronicle: Helping Clinton Make Up With the Nutroots of Daily Kos

-By Warner Todd Huston

It is well known that Hillary Clinton is not the most well-liked Democratic candidate with the Nutroots and the kids at the Daily Kos. She is often excoriated for not being enough of an anti-war candidate and many feel she betrayed the “cause.” Still, most left leaning Americans assume that she will be the Democrat Party’s nominee and some, like the San Francisco Chronicle, are interested in smoothing the differences between the assumed powerful Internet lefties and candidate Hillary Clinton. Today we get the SFChron acting in the role of mediator, trying to get readers to believe that Hillary is seeing a “thaw” in the hate the nutroots has shown her thus far. They sure hope so, anyway, and here is their bid to help that “thaw” along.

On top of hoping to help smooth the waters for Hillary Clinton, the Chron also goes ga ga over the YearlyKos convention being held in Chicago.

The second annual gathering of the Daily Kos political blog starts this week in Chicago, and here’s all you need to know about how influential the YearlyKos convention has become: Five top presidential candidates are going — including front-runner Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, even though the Kos bloggers don’t like her that much.

Analysts say the community of liberal online activists — the “netroots” — has become not only a coveted constituency for the left but a legitimate threat to conservatives, who trail Democrats in online campaigning and fundraising.

I have but one question to ask of how “influential” the nutroots has been: What candidate have they gotten elected by flexing that “influence?”

Answer: So far, no one.

Encroaching Demands from a “Religion of Peace”

By Marie Jon’

America and the world at large are facing a threat that could impact our ways of life in many aspects. In America, the freedoms we enjoy — and our very lives — could well become just a memory in the near future.

Our Judeo-Christian beliefs are up against the tyrannical mindset of extremists within Islam. Some call it radical Islam. However, that is up for debate in the minds of many. Could it be that Islam itself is the inherent problem?

Islam’s holy book, the Koran, puts forth a message of hate and total intolerance. Those who are partakers of the faith of Islam are vehemently taught that all people who are not Muslim are infidels. Some within their differing Islamic faith often suffer at the hands of other practicing Muslims. All one has to do is look at Iraq to see the death toll of citizens come from Islamic people who kill their own — other Muslims — in the name of Jihad.

Who are the people who practice this faith living within our cities and towns? Are we in a state of dangerously naïve denial?

Excerpts from The Christian Science Monitor:

“In Europe, skylines reflect the rise of Islam”
By Isabelle de Pommereau, Correspondent

“After decades of worshiping in basements and courtyards, Muslims are building hundreds of new mosques across the continent.

“Where steeples once reigned: In Germany alone, 184 new mosques are under construction, including this one in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district.

“Wiesbaden, Germany — In the Rhine Valley city of Mannheim, the glittering minaret of Germany’s biggest mosque overshadows what was once the region’s most vibrant church, testifying to Muslims’ new confidence as Christian churches are closing down.

“Years ago, 180 sisters of the Catholic order of the Sisters of the Divine Savior were the pulse of the city. Today, eight remain. Every weekend, roughly 150 Roman Catholics attend mass at the Liebfrauen Church, while up to 3,000 Muslims throng the Yavuz-Sultan-Selim mosque. Since the mosque was opened in 1995, Muslim shops and youth centers have become a magnet for the Muslim community.

“Mannheim is not unique. Across Europe, the Continent’s fastest-growing religion is establishing its public presence after decades in basements and courtyards, changing not only the architectural look of cities, but also their social fabrics.

“Hailed by many as a sign of Muslim integration, the phenomenon is also feared as evidence of a parallel Islamic world threatening Europe’s Christian culture.

MSM Consensus: ‘Just an Actor’ it is for Thompson

-By Warner Todd Huston

A few months ago, when Fred Thompson first began to ruminate about running for the White House, I wondered aloud about just what line of attack the MSM would settle upon when they began going after Thompson in earnest. There were several candidates, but the one I thought would be their favorite charge would be that of the “he’s just an actor” meme. And it looks like this is, indeed, the winning MSM charge against Thompson, as since my first article, the line has been used in many more Thompson hit pieces promulgated by the MSM.

Here Mr. Thompson is in good company, though. Who else but Ronald Reagan was and is still being called “just an actor” by denizens of the leftist MSM? But, I don’t think I’d worry that the charge will gain any more legitimacy with Fred Thompson than it did with Ronald Reagan, the man who won the Cold War. In fact, as each decade passes, Reagan gains more and more credibility as his legacy is reassessed by less partisan thinkers as the media of his own day passes mercifully from the scene.

Do not mistake me to be saying that Thompson is a new Ronald Reagan, though. It is too easy to fall into this misleading mode of thinking. Reagan was a one of a kind, to be sure. But many of the qualities that made Ronald Reagan the man for his age can be found in one Fred Thompson. While calling Thompson the next Reagan is not helpful, calling him a Reaganite, however, is more accurate.

Still, it seems that the “he’s just an actor” line is the bat the MSM will use the most as they come after Fred Thompson.

Ed&Pub: Only 13% Say Journalism a ‘Prestigious’ Job

-By Warner Todd Huston

Under the category of “WELL DUH!,” Editor & Publisher had an amusing little blurb on August 1st about a Harris poll “measuring public perceptions of 23 professions and occupations.” It’s hard to imagine that anyone would need to go to all that work to create the poll, however, at least as far as answering the question of where the occupation of journalism would rank with the American people. All they had to do was to take a peek at this site to get that easy answer: at the BOTTOM of the pile!

The lowly journalist ranks right down there with Union Leader, actor, and entertainer in the last ten least prestigious occupations.

Harry Potter’s Lesson in Mudslinging

-By Nancy Salvato

It is utterly fascinating how a traditionally anti-war left-leaning movie industry can release such incredibly produced, blockbuster “good vs. evil” fantasy epics – such as Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter series – yet demonstrates complete denial about how these hit movies actually mimic the world around us.

I suspect just as Tolkien never acknowledged at the time of writing his trilogy that it was an allegory for WWI – he couldn’t help but be subliminally influenced by events around him – the left-leaning movie industry can only accept the reality of what is happening in the world today if it is couched in make believe settings where there they can take a stand without acknowledging that their comfortable lifestyle comes courtesy of the good guys, the ones willing to fight (as brutal as need be) for their freedom.

This sort of Hollywood mentality is epitomized by an exchange between Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men, when Cruise’s character demands the truth and Jack Nicholson responds, “You can’t handle the truth!”

AP Says U.S. Imperialism Cause of ‘World’s Gravest Problems’ – But AP Loves Gorbachev

-By Warner Todd Huston

Once again, and engaging in perfect Soviet styled historical revisionism, our glorious MSM presents the “truth” of how failed Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev was really the one who “helped” the U.S. win the Cold War. AP claims Gorby brought about the fall of the Soviet Union but this “ushered in an era of U.S. imperialism,” which the AP claims is responsible for “many of the world’s gravest problems.” So, according to the AP Gorby helped the U.S. win the Cold War, but his good deed is now the cause of all the world’s ills? How losing the game can equate to an assist to the winners is anyone’s guess.

Every couple of months the left leaning western MSM dusts off this old loser to beat up the United States. And with this one the AP mixes their hero worship of Mikhail Gorbachev with their hatred of the U.S.A. in a crescendo of far left double speak that is just incredible for its cluelessness. The very mind boggling leftist dogma of their first two sentences is head spinning.

Signs and Assignments

-By Thomas E. Brewton

For those with ears to hear, God gives intuitions of what we should do to help others.

Captain Brian Thomas, leader of the Stamford Salvation Army unit, preached Sunday’s sermon at the Black Rock-Long Ridge Congregational Church in North Stamford, Connecticut. His subject was Signs and Assignments.

In the Old Testament God frequently provided signs to the Israelites to confirm his commands. One such is recorded in the Book of Judges, which chronicles the period between gaining the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership and the Israelites’ first king, Saul.

As all too frequently happened, the Israelites periodically became too wealthy and contented, shifting their worship from God to pursuit of worldly goods and pagan gods.

A Review Of “Dark Lord: The Rise Of Darth Vader” by James Luceno

-By Frederick Meekins

“Dark Lord: The Rise Of Darth Vader” by James Luceno follows the exploits of the legendary Sith Lord as he hunts down a band of Jedi escaping the fate of their brethren as a result of a regiment of clonetroopers that refuse to implement order 66.

Towards the end of “Return Of The Jedi”, Darth Vader turns on the Emperor and hefts the villain to his fate at the bottom of some kind energy reactor. However, from “Dark Lord: The Rise Of Darth Vader“, readers learn that this was not necessarily the result of a sudden change of heart upon seeing Palpatine hurl lightening from his fingertips at little Luke.

Are Media Misreporting Thompson Addition of Spencer Abraham to Campaign?

-By Warner Todd Huston

A lot of people are atwitter over this addition to the Thompson advisory team of former Senator Spencer Abraham. But, it is starting to look to me like a story incorrectly reported by the MSM and rolling off track from there. It just seems that there are too many conflicting reports on Abraham’s role with the AP reporting that he is a new “campaign manager” but others saying Randy Enwright is.

The website IsraelToday, for instance, has posted a story full of alarm over the addition of Spence to the team. Their reaction is similar to many Israel supporters here in the states, too. “Fred Thompson names anti-Israel ex-senator as campaign manager” their headline screams. They are very worried over Spence’s past slights to Israel and for being “soft on Islamic terrorism.”

Israel Today isn’t the only one. Many bloggers and MSM news sources have been reporting that Abraham is the new “campaign manager” for the Thompson campaign. But, there seems to be a major misconception over Spencer’s position with the Thompson campaign here. Many reports are calling Abraham Fred’s “campaign manager” but this does not seem to be a truthful description of his role.

CNN to Air God’s Warriors, Equating Christians to Muslim Jihadists?

-By Warner Todd Huston

With great fanfare, CNN is announcing the broadcast over three nights in August of a “Worldwide TV event” hosted by Christiane Amanpour titled “God’s Warriors.” But some fear that these three nights, each night focusing on a particular religion, will equate Christian political activists in America (the so-called “Christian Right”) to Muslim suicide bombers and radical Jihasists the world over. And after reading the CNN press release announcing the “event,” it’s hard to doubt that those fears will be accurate.

In the press release, Amanpour claims that people all over the world are questioning her about the “rise of religious influence on political power in the US.”

“As I report around the world, people often ask me about the rise of religious influence on political power within the United States, but in fact this is true worldwide,” Amanpour said. “Wherever I go, what the believers do all have in common is that they want to bring the politics of faith into the very center of public life – we are seeing this now on almost every continent.”

I wonder what credentials Amanpour has to make these judgments, anyway? It also seems odd that people would ask such a thing because if religion is being felt “on almost every continent” why would it seem so odd to foreigners that it might be happening in the USA, too, so odd they would ask about it?

Naturally, the show will feature disgraced ex-president, Jimmy Carter (the man who renounced his association with the Baptists in 1980), assailing the “Christian Right.”

Newsweek of McCain’s Implosion: America ‘Won’t Listen to a Military Man’ Anymore (Attack on Thompson Included)

-By Warner Todd Huston

One of the chief reasons that Republicans in general and Conservatives in particular were always wary of John “the maverick” McCain is the slobbering love that the MSM so constantly lavished upon him. The MSM is so distrusted that their love for McCain relayed to the country that there must be something wrong with him. As his campaign descends into ever lower depths of disarray, we may begin to see the MSM fall to the floor in abject lamentations over his demise. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth now that their favorite Republican looks to be a goner, at least if Michael Hirsh of Newsweek is any indication. In “Why McCain’s Collapse Matters”, Hirsh not only laments McCain’s diminishment of influence, but blames the American people for not listening to military “heroes” on how evil this war is. Hirsh also uses his piece as an excuse to repeatedly bash Fred Thompson using the media’s “He’s just an actor” mantra. Naturally, Hirsh learns all the wrong lessons from his review of history and displays it in this little tsk tsking tirade aimed at the American people for their gall in not fawning over McCain like the MSM does.

Hirsh starts out bashing Fred Thompson by reminding us that Thompson was still playing his “tough D.A.” role on TV as McCain was supposedly living that role in real life while he was giving Donald Rumsfeld a piece of his mind during an appearance on the Hill by Rummy early in the Iraq war. Hirsh rightfully bemoans the fact that Donald Rumsfeld was not listening to McCain’s correct advice at that time. McCain was calling for more troops at that early stage but Rummy thought the Administration’s own strategy of fewer troops and quicker “Iraqification” was better. Hirsh is mistaken to imagine that Bush was led by the nose by Rummy, however. It was Bush’s strategy, not just Rumsfeld’s. Hish is correct that McCain’s ideas of a “surge” before there was one was dead on. But, from this point Hirsh flies off track and runs wildly into the tall grass.

Free Enterprise and Government Regulation

-By Thomas E. Brewton

Lawmakers can dismount from their soak-the-rich hobby horses. Reality curtails business excesses; no need for help from Congressman Barney Frank.

The free marketplace has chastised hedge fund managers more effectively than any taxes or regulations Congressional socialists might have concocted.

The Wall Street Journal in its July, 27, 2007, edition reports:

As flagging debt markets bring the private-equity boom to a halt, the likelihood that Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. will have to postpone its initial public offering is increasing.

Jeff Arricale, who runs a financial-stock mutual fund for T. Rowe Price Group Inc., said he doubts KKR will be able to find enough investors to pull off an IPO if current market conditions continue. “Sure, at some price it is possible to do it, but I’d be shocked if they end up doing this IPO.”

Stirring the Flames of Race Baiting Over School Segregation

-By Warner Todd Huston

Reuters seems to be jumping into the fray over the Supreme Court’s latest decision on the issue of racial diversity in our schools. At least, it seems so because their latest story on the decision seems an advocacy piece against the Supreme Court and for forced “diversity” policies in our schools. In fact, Reuters seems only too happy to claim that the Supreme Court is causing “fear” in our innocent children in their piece titled, “Students, schools fear end of racial diversity.”

Reuters is obviously giving voice to this forced “diversity” and giving the bussing crowd the thumbs up in a report that also seems to say that black kids only “get in fights” when they go to predominately black schools.

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Reuters) – Seventeen-year-old Quantae Williams doesn’t understand why the U.S. Supreme Court struck down his school district’s racial diversity program.

He now dreads the prospect of leaving his mixed-race high school in suburban Louisville and returning to the poor black downtown schools where he used to get in fights.

That seems vaguely racist, doesn’t it?

Emphasis on US Mideast Policy Should Be Liberty, Not Democracy

-By Frank Salvato

The recently released Benchmark Assessment Report mandated by the US Troop Readiness, Veterans’ Care, Katrina Recovery, and Iraq Accountability Appropriations Act, 2007 (HR2206/PL110-28) states that the common goal for both the US and Iraqi governments is a democratic Iraq that can govern, defend, and sustain itself, and be an ally in the War on Terror. All of these goals are achievable. The problem is, while some are achievable within a reasonable amount of time, where US intervention is concerned, at least one goal should be considered lofty: the goal of achieving a functional, democratic Iraqi government.

There are myriad reasons why US troops should not be prematurely withdrawn from the Iraqi battlefield. Two of the chief reasons revolve around genocide and the overall war against Islamofascism.

Embracing the reality that history has provided us, the premature withdrawal of US & Coalition Forces would create a perfect opportunity for nefarious forces to initiate the genocide of millions of purple-fingered Iraqis who braved death for democracy. Foreign terrorist entities, such as al Qaeda, along with encroaching foreign governments and Ba’ath Party loyalists, would take the opportunity of a US withdrawal – the chief stabilizing force committed to the region – to cull Western leaning Iraqis in one of the worst genocides since Hitler’s campaign to eliminate Jews from the face of the earth.

AP: Sells Moore’s/Cuba’s Propaganda, 8 Americans Graduate from Cuban Med School

-By Warner Todd Huston

The AP did a fine job for Cuba’s ministry of propaganda the other day by highlighting the 8 Americans who broke U.S. law and traveled to Cuba to attend a medical school, free of charge to the students. Castro offered this free medical training as a propaganda tool to create good PR for his oppressive regime and the AP is more than willing to help him advertise it. In the same story, they also gave free advertising for the newest Michael Moore leftsploitation flick, “Sicko.” So we get a double whammy of leftist agitprop in one story.

In a story filled with kind words to Cuba’s murderous dictator of 45 years, the AP finds not one line to waste on any such thing as his political gulags, the many thousands who have precipitously fled his country or the many thousands who have died at his hands since his successful Marxist coup overtook the island nation.

Not only is the AP story filled with wide-eyed wonder at how nice Castro is to give these students of “minority backgrounds” a free medical education, AP helps them give voice against capitalism, too.

“I’ve learned that medicine is not a business, it’s social, it’s humane,” said Toussaint Reynolds, a graduate from Massapequa, New York. “I will be a better doctor in the United States for it.”

And, after we are regaled on how great the schooling was and how the students will have a “great advantage over American students” we are told that the mean, mean US government won’t guarantee that these propagandists will be allowed to practice in the USA.

Stalin Lives – In England

-By Thomas E. Brewton

British PC education follows American lead, wipes out Western history.

Read Lisa Fabrizio’s article, Not Their Finest Hour, on the Intellectual Conservative website.

The pull-quote summarizes the thrust of PC education in Britain:

The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority in Britain has dropped Winston Churchill from its list of key historical figures, in order to make room for “modern” issues.

This is straight out of the Soviet Union, where those out of favor with Stalin were liquidated and all records of their existence were expunged. Documents were destroyed or altered and photographs were retouched to remove individuals who had became non-persons.

Stalin took his cue from V. I. Lenin, who, in 1923, instructed the Commissars of Education:

We must hate — hatred is the basis of Communism. Children must be taught to hate their parents if they are not Communists.

More or less the same sort of thing has happened in the United States.

More of Thompson’s Federalist Philosophy – Great Analysis

I mentioned in my report on where Fred Thompson stands on the abortion issue that his was a Federalist’s interpretation of what role the Federal government has and what it should and shouldn’t take upon itself to do with it. I pointed out that Fred Thompson correctly understands that the Federal government has no role in regulating abortion and that this includes eliminating the anti-constitutional Supreme Court ruling that is Roe v. Wade.

Recently, Ed Morrissey over at Captain’s Quarters posted another great and revealing report on another of Thompson’s commitments to the Federalist ideology. This time it is one where Thompson had turned his attention to the 10th Amendment.

Ed references the Imwithfred blog where Thompson discusses the issue. I’d suggest reading that along with Ed’s commentary here. Thompson On Federalism.

This may seem like a dry issue, not as sexy and high profile as abortion or what have you. But this is an extremely important issue for conservatives to take into consideration when thinking about a candidate. If Thompson truly commits a presidency to the concept of Federalism, we have the best evidence yet of a candidate who will truly try to REDUCE government interference in all our lives.

So, here is Ed Morrissey’s post…

Everyone Talks About The 10th Amendment …
Captain’s Quarters

One of the themes that recurs in Republican politics is federalism, which its proponents use to move power back towards the states and closer to the electorate where it belongs. The 10th Amendment forms the great touchstone of federalism, in which all powers not expressly delegated to the federal government in the Constitution should remain with the states. Small-government advocates argue that the 10th Amendment got overrun by FDR in the New Deal and has never recovered its proper place in limiting federal power.

However, the 10th Amendment has much in common with Mark Twain’s observation about the weather: it gets plenty of discussion, but no one does anything about it. Fred Thompson says he’ll do more than just talk if elected President:
