Chicago Cops/Firemen Retire as Millionaires

-By Warner Todd Huston

There really is no excuse for any public servant to retire with a pension worth $1.3 million dollars of the people’s tax money. None. But that is precisely what happens in the City of Chicago according to Chicago’s Civic Committee.

Crain’s Greg Hinz reports that the Civic Commission sent an email blast out to its members late last week reporting that the typical Chicago Fireman who retires after 20 years of service will make $1.3 million in pension benefits. Cops make a bit less at $1.2 million.

These public servants can also retire at age 50, almost two decades earlier than the rest of us. This means that these retired city officers can potentially live one third of their lives or more on the public dime. After 20 measly years’ service.

Now, I certainly realize that cops have a high stress job. I also realize that both policemen and firemen can be called upon to put their personal safety, even their lives, on the line (though by no means do all of them do so). But these pensions are an impossible corruption of our system. No one deserves such luxury on the backs of the poor taxpayer.

I have to hand it to the Chico campaign. As Gery Chico runs for Chicago Mayor, they are out of the box in full force and getting to the bloggers, too. Heck, I’m not even a Democrat and am getting their campaign press releases. Good job to the Chico shop! Good media outreach so far.

Here is their latest effort meant to introduce the candidate to those who may not know him.

Mayoral Candidate Gery Chico’s Chicago City Hall Transparency Ideas

-By Warner Todd Huston

When Mayor Richard “King” Daley got himself a one billion dollar infusion of cash by selling the parking meters in the city (yes, I said one BILLION) everyone thought it was such a great deal. Gery Chico tells us that all this money is nearly gone and spent already. He wants city hall to be more transparent and if he becomes mayor that’s what he says he’ll do.

From the Chico Press release:

Congressman Elect Joe Walsh: Let’s Take The Country Back

From Congressman elect Joe Walsh…

I’m pleased that the decision of the people of the 8th District voting on November 2nd has been confirmed. Representative Bean telephoned me earlier this evening and congratulated me for winning the 8th District seat in the United States House of Representatives. I am grateful to each and every individual who cast their ballot for me, and for all of the thousands of volunteers, Tea Party members, regular Republicans, friends and staff people that have made this victory possible. I congratulate Representative Bean on her vigorous campaign and thank her for her six years of public service.

With the voting and counting now complete, we can turn all of our energies to advancing the legislative agenda the people of the 8th District have told me to pursue: more responsive government, less borrowing against our children’s future, and a common sense approach to deal with the economic challenges facing our country. I will be busy here in Washington for several more days before returning to Illinois to personally thank all those who worked so hard to send me to Congress.

We have a lot to do, and I am eager to get at it.

Congressman-elect Joe Walsh will be holding a press conference on Wednesday, November 17 at 11:30 AM Eastern Time at RNC Headquarters.

Blago Calling Emanuel In Next Trial?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Rod Blagojevich is saying he fully intends to bring Rahm Emanuel into court as a witness in the next phase of his corruption trial.

“Rahm is going to be a central witness in this case for us,” Blago told Fox News Chanel commentator Geraldo Rivera.

Geraldo wondered if this would be a major distraction for Rahm Emanuel next year as he runs for mayor as the second Blago trial will be occurring at the same time as the mayoral contest.

This is one thing that could portend trouble for an Emanuel run for City Hall. Of course, Emanuel has to get past the charge of non-residency and the perception that he is a carpetbagger from Washington, too. But… you know…

Anyway, if you want to watch a master of desperate spin, heeeeeeres Rod:

It most certainly will be interesting, though, to have a major candidate for mayor who is in the middle of a campaign for City Hall to be dragooned into a corruption trial. If the other candidates for mayor don’t press Emanuel to answer to just how much of Blago’s corruption Rahm knew about, when he knew it and how much of it he was involved in — and by extension the president himself — they don’t deserve to be on the ballot themselves!

Lastly, there is something amusing about a Chicago Mayor in a corruption imbroglio before he even gets elected, too. If that isn’t a typically Chicago mess, what is?

Chicago Mayoral Contest Begins: Gery Chico Calls for 10 Debates

-By Warner Todd Huston

Well, the field of contenders for Chicago’s mayoral election is taking shape. Hats in the ring currently were tossed by James Meeks, Danny Davis, Miguel del Valle, Carol Moseley Braun, and of course Rahm Emanuel.

Then there is former school board chief Gery Chico. Chico claims that over 50,000 voters signed his petition as he filed them on Monday morning. Chico says “the time to debate is now.”

Mayoral candidate Gery Chico called for at least 10 debates in the neighborhoods of Chicago on Monday, after filing his petition signatures at the Chicago Board of Elections. Chico filed 50,254 signatures and will unveil the first major proposal of the campaign this week.

“I am calling for all the candidates to commit to at least 10 debates in Chicago’s neighborhoods before the election,” Chico said. “The future of our city is at stake and Chicagoans deserve nothing short of a full and vigorous debate of the issues. Let’s debate ways to create more jobs, make our streets safer and fix education and let’s debate them now because Chicago needs a mayor who is ready on Day One.”

My guess is that Rahm will do his best to ignore all contenders and assume the mantle of clear winner. I’d also guess he will refuse all debates until very close to the end of the campaign.

Coalition of Chicago’s Blacks Chose Danny Davis for Mayor

-By Warner Todd Huston

After two months of backroom dealing and secret meetings Chicago’s African American community claims that it has chosen U.S. Representative Danny Davis as its black Democratic candidate for mayor of Chicago in 2011.

Davis beat out such luminaries as Alderman Walther Burnett, the Reverend James Meeks, and long-out-of-view Carol Moseley Braun.

Sources say that Moseley Braun lost because she has been out of the public eye for too long. But I’d guess she lost more because of all the fraud and thievery she’s been involved in over the years. She isn’t called Carol Mostly Fraud for nothing.

Chicago’s Lefty on Lefty Hatin’

-By Warner Todd Huston

This has been an interesting election cycle we are living through, hasn’t it? But another interesting one is soon to unfold in Chicago as the Mayor’s seat becomes up for grabs next year.

The fun has already begun here in Chi-Town. Not long ago, for instance, an amusing little episode of lefty on lefty hatin’ erupted in Chicago between long-time racebaiting activist and Congressman Luis Gutierrez and AFSCME President Gerry McEntee that is simply too delicious to ignore.

Ordinarily, you’d think that a left-wing, Democrat congressman would be fast friends with the president of one of America’s biggest public employees unions. But these two titans of leftism have found themselves embroiled in local Chicago politics.

Dan Patlak’s Second Radio Spot Released‏

From the Patlak for Cook County Board of Review campaign (suburban Cook County)…

On Tuesday we released our second radio commercial which highlights the fact that Commissioner Brendan Houlihan has worked full time at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange for his entire term in office and rarely appears at the Board of Review while collecting approximately $500,000 in salary and benefits in the past four years from county taxpayers. Taxpayers have a right to ask whether this abrogation of responsibility by Mr. Houlihan contributed to:

1. The record delay in issuing tax bills which will now arrive after the election and right before Thanksgiving.
2. His failure to fulfill his campaign promise to provide on-line appeals (for which he was roundly criticized by the Tribune Editorial Board).
3. Whether he could have prevented the scandal involving manipulation of Board decisions on behalf of contributors to a Schaumburg area Democratic state representative.

Dan has pledged to work full-time as a commissioner at the Board of Review and will resign his part-time position as Wheeling Township Assessor.

Please forward this e-mail to anyone you think might be interested in how one of our Cook County elected officials has been performing his duties over the past four years.

Chicago Tribune Calls Out Dan Seals for Misleading Voters‏

From the Dold for Congress campaign (10th District)…

As you probably read today, the Chicago Tribune called on Dan Seals and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to stop the false attack ads against his Pro-Choice stance. The ads, both running on TV and found on flyers mailed to voters across the District, seek to scare and intimidate women claiming Bob wants to criminalize a woman’s right to choose. Bob has always been Pro-Choice and respects a woman’s right to choose.

The editorial stated, “We are not impressed that Seals would give voters false ideas about his opponent’s views on abortion. Not impressed at all. He and the DCCC should drop these very misleading ads.”

(Illinois) Rosemont Center Hosts Anti-‘Islampphobia’ Event

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois is hosting a pro-Islam event that intends to stop the “Islamophobia” going on across the U.S.A.

A coalition of Chicago-area Muslim groups organized the event held at the convention center in order to combat “hate” they see being leveled against Muslims in America. This is interesting in that the FBI “hate crime” statistics (2008 report, table 1) do not show much of that “hate” going on in comparison to the crimes being perpetrated against other religions.

Former ACORN Worker Justifies Preventing Pledge of Allegiance at Illinois Candidate Debate

-By Warner Todd Huston

Thanks to Jeff Dunetz at Yid With Lid we have found out that a former ACORN worker turned director of the League of Women Voters has been heard justifying actions of the debate moderator who tried to prevent the audience at an 8th District candidate debate from reciting the Pledge of Allegiance last week.

As the debate began someone in the crowd yelled out asking if they were going to start the night’s activities with the pledge. The moderator of the debate nixed the idea saying “no we are not.” Then when the crowd expressed its shock and dismay she said “excuse me,” and “it has never been part of…” at which time she was interrupted by the entire crowd reciting the pledge anyway.

For days the controversy has raged since the October 20 debate where debate moderator Kathy Tate-Bradish tried to prevent the people from reciting the pledge. Then on Oct. 22, there was an outrageous story that Executive Director Jan Czarnik of the League of Women Voters was lambasting the pledge controversy as a stunt set up by GOP candidate Joe Walsh and an example of “phony patriotism.”

So the LWV thinks reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is “phony patriotism,” eh?

Disgusting.

Representative Shakowski Again Refusing to Answer Simple Questions

-By Warner Todd Huston

Rep. Jan Schakowski has refused over and over to answer the simple question about just where in the Constitution Obamacare’s insurance mandates appear. What part of our nation’s governing document justifies Congress forcing Americans to buy something? Shakowski consistently refuses to answer this seminal question.

John Ruberry of Marathon Pundit once again asked these questions of Rep. Shakowski and, once again, she refused to answer.

Notice how these were not screamed questions, not raucous, right-wing attack dogs here? These videographers comported themselves professionally, did not name call, and asked their questions in a respectful tone. Yet Rep. Shakowski still refused to answer.

It’s time to get rid of this odious, leftist, monstrosity. Vote Joel Pollak in the 9th District!

10/13 “Moneybomb” for Rev. Hayes For Congress (2nd District)

From the Midwest Regional College Republicans on behalf of Hayes for Congress…

This is the year for GOP pick-ups in [what were once] “safe” Democrat seats! In the last comparable year (1994), Chicago powerhouse Dan Rostenkowski was [shockingly!!] defeated for re-election, by his Republican opponent. [LA Times: GOP ‘David’ knocks off ‘Goliath’]

We now have another situation, in which a scandal plagued Democrat Congressman can be ousted.

Jesse Jackson, Jr. has a 72% UNFAVORABLE rating!

Leading pollster & analyst Dick Morris said that IL’s 2nd Congressional district is now in play due to the amazing effort of GOP nominee Rev. Isaac C. Hayes, and the sex and dirty money scandals of incumbent Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky: The Most Extreme Left-Winger in Congress

According to GovTrack.us, a non-partisan legislative tracking service, Illinois Representative Jan Schakowsky is the most left-wing member of either of the two houses of Congress, based on the bills she co-sponsors. Similarly, the non-partisan National Journal, which measures members of Congress by their voting record, name Schakowsky as the most liberal Democrat in the House of Representatives.

Imagine what this is saying? Jan Shakowsky is even further left than avowed socialist Bernie Sanders who is listed as an “independent” in the Senate. Shakowsky is even further left than the nation’s token socialist!

Another Corrupt Stroger Associate Arrested

-By Warner Todd Huston

Another one of Cook County Board President Todd Stroger’s top aides was arrested for a money laundering scheme on Monday, Oct. 4.

Stroger aide Carla Oglesby is accused of funneling a county no-bid contract to her own privately held public relations firm. The $24,975 contract falls under the “24-9” rule where contracts under $25,000 can be awarded without the County Board’s specific approval.

Oglesby served as Stroger’s chief spokesman during his failed primary bid for reelection.

The contract was first reported by the SunTimes last April at which time President Stroger suspended Oglesby for a week. The story prompted federal authorities to begin an investigation.

At the time Oglesby denied she steered the contract to her own firm, but the Times found paperwork showing that she had signed the contracts over to herself.

This is typical of the cash machine for friends and family that Todd Stroger turned his stint as Cook County Board President into. From handing out contracts to pals and giving all sorts of county jobs to family members, Stroger has been particularly corrupt in office.

The county board has since changed it rule on the under $25,000 contracts.

Illinois Congresswoman’s Out of Control Spending Spree

From the Palatine Tea Party…

Here is what Melissa Bean (D) said when she ran for Congress in 2002, “my primary tactic to reach a balanced budget would be cutting wasteful spending”. 1

Here is what Melissa Bean (D) said when she ran for Congress in 2004, “In the area of the budget, Bean wants to re-establish pay-as-you-go rules requiring tax cuts or spending increases to be covered in current budgets. She also wants to cap growth in pork barrel spending.” 2
