NY Daily News Misleads About Bush Linking Iraq and 9/11

-By Warner Todd Huston

The New York Daily News perpetrated an interesting, yet subtly misleading headline about president Bush’s Charleston, South Carolina speech on Al Qaeda in Iraq today in theirs titled “W still ties Iraq, 9/11.” Following the left’s playbook of claiming Bush has illicitly linked Saddam’s Iraq to 9/11 their headline made it seem as if Bush, indeed, “still ties” 9/11 to Iraq.

It is, of course, a false claim that Bush linked Iraq to 9/11 either then OR now, but the New York Daily News doesn’t seem too interested in the truth. And for the headline to say “still ties” they are certainly saying that Bush is using past tense verbiage. But, for the most part, Bush is clearly talking present tense in his speech and he still never linked “Iraq” to “9/11” in the way the Daily News headline seems to claim.

The defeatist’s of the left have always claimed that Bush said Saddam Huessein was responsible for 9/11 and that he used that claim to invade and pursue regime change in that oppressed nation. But, there is no speech in which Bush claimed that Saddam was responsible for 9/11… he just never said it. This is a lie that the left has promulgated since Bush announced we were going into Iraq. As the saying goes, “A lie will go round the world while truth is still pulling its boots on”, and this “Bush lied” lie has practically won the footrace with the truth.

Contrary to what the Daily News is trying to mislead everyone into thinking, if one actually reads Bush’s July 24th speech he still did not really link “9/11” to “Iraq.” What Bush really did was link al Qaeda, the al Qaeda that is in Iraq today, to the same network controlled by Osamma bin Ladden, the very same bin Ladden that did take credit for perpetrating 9/11. Bush’s entire focus in his speech was on al Qaeda in Iraq today, not the Iraq of 9/11/2001.

In the Daily News’ phrasing, though, Bush is talking about the Iraq of 9/11, not the Iraq of today.

Green Acres: Welfare for the wealthy – and dead

-By Michael M. Bates

We in the Land of Lincoln have many matters about which to fret. Will the budget impasse between the Democratic governor and the Democratic General Assembly get resolved? Will Illinois ever join the 48 states that permit concealed carrying of weapons, thereby giving law-abiding citizens a fighting chance against the bad guys? What week of September (or possibly August) will the Cubs choke this year? Will Gov. Milorad Blagojevich try sticking taxpayers with another $600 makeup bill?

There’s so very much for us to ponder. Happily, we don’t have to worry if our fair state is getting its “fair share” when it comes to Federal farm subsidies. The answer is yes, yes, yes! Illinois ranks third in the Nation.

We know this because the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has a Web site, mulchblog.com, compiling Agriculture Department (USDA) subsidy records. The EWG is extremely liberal; I don’t subscribe to many of its objectives. One thing I do endorse, though, is cutting giveaways in general and giveaways to folks who don’t need them in particular.

Illinois received well over $3 billion in commodity program payments for USDA program years 2003-2005, according to the database. All figures reflect that period.

Chicago generally isn’t known for its farming. Nevertheless, there are over 1,600 subsidy recipients in the city. In zip code 60611, home of Michigan Avenue’s Magnificent Mile, 92 gentleman/gentle lady farmers availed themselves of aid from Washington.

Islam America’s ‘Greatest Strength’?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Outrageously, Newsweek has published a so-called “special report” in which Muslim Americans are called “one of this country’s greatest strengths,” but, Newsweek worries, that they are now ” vulnerable as never before.” Yes, America, as far as Newsweek is concerned it is YOU, not Islam, that is the problem and therein lies the main reason why the west seriously misunderstands the war in which we are engaged, and why we could lose it.

As to the first claim, Newsweek offers not a single reason in their report why Muslims might be one of our “greatest strengths,” but of the claim of how “vulnerable” they are, Newsweek drones on and on endlessly. Naturally, Newsweek puts the onus on Americans to bend over backward for Muslims, but doesn’t once take Muslims to task for their barbarities and radicalism.

This “special report” starts out with a Muslim American from Cleveland, Ohio demanding of George W. Bush at a meeting in that city that the US take stronger measures to stop anti-Muslim sentiment from spreading in this country. “It’s the young people I’m concerned with,” Fareed Siddiq gravely claims.

Yes, Mr. Siddiq. I agree. It is the young Muslims who we are all concerned with as they are the ones that are most liable to wage Jihad on their fellow Americans in answer to your Muslim causes across the globe as was seen with the Lackawana Six. So, yes, Mr. Siddiq, we worry about the Muslim youth, too… but for a different, more legitimate reason than you.

Siddiq’s bloviation is especially hypocritical in light of the fact that Pakistan, the country of his birth, is nearly as radical and supportive of Jihad across the world as Saudi Arabia with Pakistan ranking as one of the world’s most active terror exporting and supporting countries.

Newsweek goes on to claim that Muslims in the USA consider themselves “Americans”, not radical Muslims. But, Newsweek fails to bother balancing their report with so many easily found anti-western speeches by Muslim Imams across this country. From the Nation of Islam to the common Muslim Mosque radical speeches are far more common than Newsweek wants to let on. Granted the anti-western ranting here is not yet nearly as bad as it is in Europe, still, like elsewhere in the world, we see few Muslim Imams forcefully standing against terrorism and radical Islam.

Thompson’s Waiting Strategy On Target for GOP Governors

-By Warner Todd Huston

As I was saying on the 24th in the post titled ”Some reasons why Thompson’s waiting is a good thing!”, the idea that Thompson is wasting too much time by not jumping in the race right this minute is not the correct way to look at his current strategy of waiting. Now, it looks like the GOP Governors at the National Governors Association agree with me, and Team Thompson. In support of my contention we get an AP report on the NGA meeting in Michigan this past weekend reveals some evidence that Thompson’s wait is not hurting him at all.

In “GOP governors: too early for favorite”, the AP reports that many of the GOP governors are saying that it’s too early to worry about who’s in and who they will endorse.

Republican governors say it’s too soon to worry about the absence of a clear favorite for the GOP presidential nomination. The muddled picture could even be a blessing, some said in interviews during the weekend meeting of the National Governors Association.

And it seems some are waiting to assess the field once Thompson announces.

The candidates’ scramble to break from the pack and speculation about possible new entries such as former Sen. Fred Thompson are keeping the race in the headlines.

But, whether support from these governors is contingent on Thompson or not, few seem too worried about it all.

Taking Risks

-By Thomas E. Brewton

To become messengers of the Gospel, we have to move outside our comfort zones.

Eric Lubbert, one of our church’s Elders, preached the sermon Sunday at the Black Rock-Long Ridge Congregational Church, in North Stamford, Connecticut.

Speaking of his own experience, Mr. Lubbert noted that it’s too easy in our Christian lives to become comfortable, to settle into a routine of going to church on Sunday, and going little farther than that. If, however, we are to heed Jesus’s command, we must break out of those comfort zones and take risks to bring the Good News to our family, friends, and co-workers.

Abortion – Where is Fred Thompson? Where Should Conservatives be?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Probable Presidential candidate Fred Thompson has recently been caught up in an imbroglio on abortion at the very start of his nascent run for the White House. He has been “caught” working as a lobbyist for a pro-abortion group and, when running for the Senate and while a newly minted Senator, Thompson filled out a questionnaire or two that could lead one to imagine he isn’t staunchly against the procedure. In this piece, I would like to address Thompson’s voting record and positions, show that they are consistent from the beginning, and juxtapose them with those for which a real Conservative, Federalist should advocate.

Thompson’s Political Record – 1994 to current

When he first began to run for the Senate, Thompson gave an interview for the newsletter of the Tennessee Republican Liberty Caucus in which he said of his views on abortion, “(The Federal) Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The women must make the ultimate decision. Government should treat its citizens as adults capable of making moral decisions on their own.”

This was in response to some Tennessee critics of his who claimed he was pro-choice on abortion but it would seem more to be a libertarian, Federalist view point, than a strictly pro-abortion view.

In 1994, Thompson filled out a survey for Project Vote Smart about his views of abortion. He placed his mark next to the box that said: “Abortions should be legal in all circumstances as long as the procedure is completed within the first trimester of the pregnancy.”

Thompson’s views show, however, that he thinks many restrictions should be placed on the procedure as opposed to being just free and easy to get. On the questionnaire he was for the following restrictions:

If You’re Fat, So are Your Friends?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Here is another reason why people look askance at University “researchers” and wonder why for smart guys they seem so stupid? Reuters passed on some stupid smart guy “research” that posits that if someone is fat, so will their friends and family become fat just the by association with that fat person.

Your best friend can make you fat: researchers

“This is the first (study) to show how obesity spreads through the social network from person to person to person,” James Fowler of the University of California, San Diego, who worked on the study, told a telephone briefing.

Writing in the New England Journal of Medicine, the researchers said their findings show that obesity is contagious — not like a virus is contagious, but in a social sense.

Maybe it’s the “first study” because it is so stupid that no one else would have bothered with it before?

So what is the idiocy they have miraculously “discovered”?

THE AD YOUR KIDS SHOULD TAKE TO SCHOOL

-By Vince Johnson

It is a full-page ad designed to appear in such papers as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, or USA Today. The headline is in 72 point type and appears over a photo of 12 Middle School students in a classroom:

WILL YOU SEND US TO PRISON IF WE
REFUSE TO MAKE PAYMENTS ON YOUR DEBTS?

We are talking about your federal debt. You keep borrowing money from our future to finance wars, build billion dollar bridges between Alaskan villages, and “little” things like the multi-million dollar Indoor Rainforest Project in Iowa. You blame this continual borrowing on the politicians and do nothing except complain about it whenever you get tired of yakking about the weather.

If you were truly responsible adults, you would tell us the truth. You would tell us that you do not have enough money to pay for all the things you want, so you borrow from us. The amount is now around nine trillion dollars and increasing everyday. That’s Nine Thousand Billion Dollars you have borrowed from us!

How would you like it if we borrowed that kind of money directly from your future? How would you like it if we did it without your permission? How would you like it if we passed laws authorizing the courts to send you to prison if you refused to make payments on money we borrowed from you?

That is exactly what your generation is doing to our generation. If you want to discuss this further, please wait until we graduate from high school. These next four or five years may be the few remaining where we can be kids and never have to worry about our nation going bankrupt or how we can survive with what we have left after paying taxes.

This ad concept designed by Vince Johnson, Reality Consultant

I am a veteran of WW II and the Korean Conflict. I believe it is unconstitutional to force our children to make payments on a debt we created without their knowledge or approval. If you agree, print this article and have your kids use it at school for “Show and Tell.”

Democrats NOT ‘Fiscally Responsible’ as Claimed in ‘06 Elections

-By Warner Todd Huston

SINK THE EARMARK

Contrary to the claims that the voters’ “war weariness” was the reason the Republicans lost their majority in Congress in the 2006 midterms, the real reason that Republican and moderate voters lost their zest for supporting the GOP is because of the lie that the GOP majority made of their long standing plank of fiscal responsibility. The earmark frenzy and Congressional pork spending that the GOP indulged in, with the Democrat Party gleefully joining in, is what lost them the 2006 elections. Disenchantment with the war, the media’s favorite claim, is not the chief reason the GOP lost the confidence of the American people. After all, the president, not Congress, is the face of this war.

The right of center American voter looked to a GOP controlled Congress that seemed indistinguishable from what we would have with a Democrat controlled legislature and wondered: “why not vote in a real Democrat if what we have are just like them anyway?” So, the American people thought to give the Democrat Party a shot at proving their claims of newfound responsibility. The Republican’s hypocrisy was just too much for conservative voters and the centrists just saw no reason to stick with the GOP.

So, as a result we got the Nancy Pelosi House of Representatives and Harry Reid as majority leader in the Senate.

“Democrats will not disappoint… We pledge to make this the most honest, ethical, and open Congress in history…With integrity, civility, and fiscal responsibility as our guide, Democrats intend to move forward with the agenda for change on which we were elected.”– Incoming Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, Nov. 14th, 2006 as published in the Christian Science Monitor

But, since their embarrassing loss in the last midterms, the GOP has been endeavoring to regain their status as the Party of fiscal responsibility. It hasn’t been easy, mostly because their own voters are so skeptical that their efforts have the ring of authenticity. But, still, it is good the Republicans are at least trying.

NYTimes’ ‘Warped’ Language Against the Constitution

-By Warner Todd Huston

It amuses and gratifies a supporter of the 2nd Amendment to see The New York Times, the so-called “paper of record,” so constantly reduced to sputtering, fools over their constant loss of the battle for draconian gun control measures and the July 17th editorial from the Times is yet another example of how they just don’t understand why the average American would pressure their Congressional representatives to support the U.S. Constitution and its 2nd Amendment.

The Times is famous for claiming to be the intelligent side of the debate on any particular issue. They claim to represent the sane or “real” American argument on the issues of the day and it is generally assumed by their supporters that they only use the highest professional standards in language and the tools of persuasion. They call themselves the “paper of record” and congratulate themselves on their status as the grown-ups of political discourse. But, they come apart at the seams whenever the 2nd Amendment is brought up, that supposed high level of discourse lowered to the sputtering, gibberish of any common extremist, the logic drained out of their efforts.

It is even more amusing that they are so shocked that their beloved 2006 Democratic Congress is thus far no better at eliminating an important part of the law of the land than any past Congress has been.

Injudicious Religious Activism

-By Thomas E. Brewton

Left wing churches ignore the law, engage in the equivalent of judicial activism.

The Wall Street Journal, in its July 20, 2007, edition printed an article based on a Time Magazine story in the July 30 edition. The first two paragraphs are the following:

Sanctuary Drive Could Bolster Religious Left
TIME — JULY 30

A movement to give sanctuary in churches to illegal immigrants threatened with deportation might bring new firepower to the long-quiescent religious left, writes David Van Biema in Time.

Inspired by churches who offered sanctuary to Central Americans fleeing civil wars in the 1980s, members of a range of religious faiths have launched the New Sanctuary Movement in cities around the U.S. The effort has been small-scale, housing eight undocumented immigrants in churches in five U.S. cities. (While immigration authorities legally can raid a church, they rarely do.) NSM activists say four more congregations will house immigrants in August, and the mainline Protestant United Church of Christ has resolved to work with it.

A few observations:

Some Reasons Why Thompson’s Waiting is a Good Thing!

-By Warner Todd Huston

Getting Edgy Waiting for Thompson?

I know what you’re thinking; “WHY can’t he just announce and get it over with?”

There have been a few scattered reports that Thompson supporters are getting tired of waiting, getting edgy over it all, or otherwise are wondering what the hold up might be? I think there are some excellent reasons why waiting doesn’t materially hurt Thompson, the impatience of some of his supporters aside.

First of all we have the polls that are consistently in the candidate-to-be’s favor. Here is just the latest report:

ROCHESTER, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–In the Republican nomination race, former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson, while still not a declared candidate, has edged marginally ahead of Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Three in ten (29%) of those who expect to vote in a Republican primary or caucus would vote for Thompson while 28 percent would vote for Giuliani (and a one percent difference is not statistically significant).

Without spending a penny, without having to involve himself in pointless debates and peeing contests with other candidates, Thompson is consistently either leading the field, or close behind the leader of the polls.

Mitch McConnell, Hero of the GOP in the Senate

-By Warner Todd Huston

We Republicans and Conservatives (not always one in the same thing, necessarily… hello Linc “leftie” Chaffey) have been eyeing the Senate with disgust for many years, now. But we finally have a Senator who knows what to do with power. Mitch McConnell has rode in from the Blue Grass state — um, that would be Kentucky for those unaware — and taken control of the Senate, even though his Party is in minority status.

Frist was a useless addition to the Senate in the role of Majority leader. He did squat for the Party, the country or even his home state of Tennessee in that position. His best service was stepping aside. Yet, for as ineffective as Frist was, Trent “the mouth” Lott was even worse. Lott was, though, a great Democrat as the GOP majority leader. He helped their cause immensely so they should give him massive congrats on his work for them.

But, finally, we’ve got a man that knows what to do as a Party leader. Mitch McConnell has had the supposed majority Party running in circles and he isn’t done yet. Last week he did a masterful job of confounding the chief Defeat-o-crat, Harry Reid, during their showboat all night Senate session.

Iraq: Reid’s Political Opportunism Is Showing

-By Frank Salvato

If you needed anymore proof that Democrat leaders in Congress are playing politics with the war against Islamofascism all you had to do was listen to a recent Capitol Hill press conference where Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) was fielding questions. When asked repeatedly whether the Iraqi people would be safer as a result of the anti-war/troops-out-now lobby getting its beloved US retreat, Reid responded by asking if there were any more questions. The Democrat Party that championed freedom, liberty, honesty and civil rights for the everyman, everywhere, is dead. The Progressive-Left has killed it and buried it in an unmarked grave somewhere in the deserts of Iraq.

As stunningly callous as Reid’s elitist response was, that wasn’t the half of it. In fact, the short exchange between Reid and ABC News correspondent Jack Tapper could very well serve as the defining moment for the 110th Congress’s Democrat leadership.

New York Mayor Personally Hires Illegals for City Work… Where is the Media?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Mayor George Darden, of Spring Valley, New York, is a Democrat who has been caught hiring illegal immigrants to work for his suburban village but you wouldn’t know he is a Democrat by the coverage his story is getting. In fact, of the several stories thus far, not one even mentions his Party. But, an even bigger mystery is why this story isn’t getting wider notice?

On the 17th this story of a Mayor of a New York city personally approaching illegal immigrants on street corners and hiring them to work for the village was first reported in local papers. It seems awfully shocking that an elected official would personally violate so many US immigration and work laws all at one time, yet no mention of the man’s Party has surfaced nor have we heard much from this story on a national level. How much hype would this story get from the AP, do you imagine, if this Mayor had been a Republican? And why has several days gone by with so few MSM outlets picking this story up? Perhaps that this Mayor isn’t a Republican the national media finds it less than compelling?

In any case, here is the meat of the thing:

Darden spoke after The Journal News reported that Felix Sandoval, an undocumented day laborer from Guatemala, identified Darden as the man who hired him and several friends for demolition work.

“He came on Sunday in his suit,” Sandoval said. “He came and he said to me, ‘Do you work?’ … He gave me a paper with how much he was going to pay us” _ $10 an hour.

Asked if he was sure it was Darden, Sandoval said yes and produced one of the mayor’s business cards from his wallet, the report said. The Journal News had first reported on Tuesday that illegal immigrants had been hired by the village for the project.

Seriously, imagine if this was a Republican Mayor?

The Associated Press Says America has ‘Faded’ Since WWII

-By Warner Todd Huston

The AP will use just about any excuse to say that the USA isn’t what it used to be, or what it should be. Yes, they will use any excuse to tear down this great country. Today’s example is predicated on the dodgy research of another America bashing “economist” who is saying Americans are too short — as in too short in actual, physical height — because we are “gradually falling behind the rest of the world” in everything.

Lamenting that in the 1850’s the people of the USA averaged 2 and 1/2 inches taller than folks in western Europe, the AP goes on to rip the USA because other nations have caught up to us and, in some cases, surpassed us in height. But it isn’t just height that the AP says makes us losers.

Without explaining, the AP says that we have faded in “so many other arenas.”

The Poverty Campaign

-By Thomas E. Brewton

John Edwards’s campaign mantra should be, James Carville-style, “It’s the capitalists, stupid!”

Today’s Wall Street Journal says that John Edwards may be trailing Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, but his Johnnie-One-Note hammering on poverty and “the two Americas” is forcing all of the Democratic Party hopefuls to include it in their own campaign promises.

We should remind ourselves about two aspects of Mr. Edwards’s program.

First, it comes out of the fundamentals of socialism. Second, it has been tried many times, both at the state and national levels, always with very bad results. The poor wind up in worse shape than before they started.

Look at the pathetically helpless people in New Orleans, still unable to deal with the results of Katrina, because their society has been victimized by the welfare-state mentality started by Huey Long in the 1920s and institutionalized by Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal in the 1930s.

The Future of the Conservative Cause – Reno, NV Oct. 12,13,14 – BE THERE

-By Warner Todd Huston
A Conference of Conservative Bloggers in October, Reno, Nevada

Well, you’ve seen the banner at the top of this page now for the last few months. The CLC, Conservative Leadership Conference, is the next step in organizing a vital and useful Conservative web presence, so if you want to have anything at all to do with the Conservative movement on the bold, new frontier that is the Internet, you’d better attend!

We have already seen the Internet as the fulcrum of change. With the exposure of Rathergate, Reutersgate, and any number of efforts to expose media lies, not to mention the recently successful efforts to kill the illegal alien amnesty bill, the Internet is proving a powerful tool. If you are interested in taking your conservative message to the people, this is the medium by which to do so.

But, how? That is the question. After all, there are millions of webpages out there. How can you make a difference if you aren’t even being heard? Networking is one of the answers to that dilemma and, attending the CLC in October will help you achieve that networking solution.

You’ll meet thousands of people just like you. People from big name blogs and small, people with the ability to help you get the conservative word out there. People such as Grover G. Norquist; Congressman John Shadegg (Honorary Chair); Bob Barr; Dick Armey; Adrian “Good Morning, Vietnam!” Cronauer; David Avella (GOPAC); Chris Simcox, all are confirmed speakers and guests. Many more will be announced in the near future. So, as you can see, some great guests are in the offing.

As I said, of the future of the conservative movement, no single aspect than the Internet is more important or far-reaching. The power of this medium is virtually untapped, but it is just starting to become a sought after entity for political change. Not every politician has yet “gotten” the power of the Internet, but it won’t be long before not one corner of this country is untouched by its reach.

Now is the time to join the efforts to continue Reagan’s America, no other single method of communication is as effective. And, it is no longer just the written word that we can wield over the Internet for the conservative cause. Audio and video is fast becoming an important tool. And all of it is on the Internet.

So, don’t just sit there, join us in October in Reno for the Conservative Leadership Conference. It is the ground floor of the Conservative movement and you can join there!

And, who knows… perhaps you’ll catch me there? I can’t wait to meet you.

Tammy Faye Bakker passes, is the MSM Attacking Her Still?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Upon the passing today of famed 1980’s televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker-Messner, it is easy to recall that the MSM loved to attack her as a “symbol” of all that is wrong with America.

Liberal MSMers of the past loved to portray the woman as the “very model of Reagan’s Decade of Greed,” but this news made me wonder how the media is reporting her passing, at least during this early morning time as the country wakes to the news.

Tammy Faye has been reviled for many years by the MSM, though recently seems to have gained a sort of kitschy popularity. So, I admit that I went in assuming that the MSM would unleash their worst comments on her passing and, as I set out to search the reports, I was thinking that the MSM would use her death as just another excuse to attack her in their prosaically common, mean-spirited fashion. But, I was surprised upon finding that most of these early reports have shied away from the “decade of greed” tagline to her life and have refrained form gauche personal attacks.

All except for the Associated Press, that is.

Arrogant Politician Says Our Taxes are His Money

-By Warner Todd Huston

Don “bridge to nowhere” Young (R, Alaska) shows his arrogance again by verbally attacking fellow Republicans who were questioning his latest grab for earmarked, pork spending cash.

Taking “strong exception” to the proposal by Scott Garrett (R, New Jersey) to strike Young’s pork spending on educational programs for native Alaskan and Hawaiians, Young threatened to “bite back” at his opponents.

“You want my money, my money,” Young stridently declared before warning conservatives that, “Those who bite me will be bitten back.”

According to Politico.com, however, it was Garrett, not Young, who got the appreciation of Republican colleagues.

Members of the conservative Republican Study Committee gave Garrett a standing ovation later in the day during the group’s weekly meeting, an aide to one conservative member said.

And this had better be the case. Young is one of the worst offenders of pork spending in the Congress. As Politico reminds us…

And lest we forget, Young, who used to chair the House Transportation Committee, is responsible for the so-called “Bridge to Nowhere,” a proposed span connecting Ketchikan, Alaska, with the tiny island of Gravina that would have cost $315 million – and eventually came to symbolize profligate spending under Republican rule.

Oh, and he has spent more than $250,000 on legal fees so far this year at the same time that federal investigators probe some of his campaign’s biggest contributors.

Young, with his wasteful spending and bloated budget busting, is the poster child for why Republican and moderate voters turned away from the GOP in the 2006 midterms. His sort of arrogance is the kind that makes people wonder why they shouldn’t just vote for a real Democrat if their Republican guy in office is going to act like one anyway.

This guy is the worst kind of Republican.

Larry Flynt: Democratic Moralist

-By Michael M. Bates

Viewing Larry Flynt merely as a pornographer who’s made a lot of money exploiting people’s vices doesn’t do him justice. He’s also the conscience of the Democratic Party.

Flynt pays money to procure salacious information about members of Congress and high-ranking government officials. Last week, he took credit for outing Louisiana Senator David Vitter. The Republican admitted using the services of prostitutes.

In a press conference, Flynt claimed he currently is looking at more than 20 similar cases. He takes particular delight in exposing Republicans. He’s quoted in The Hill:

“They’ve (Republicans) been living a repressed life all their life. Democrats are liberal — they wear it on their sleeve. Their sex life is what it is. They don’t spend their whole life trying to cover it up.”

Really? Perhaps that explains Democrats like former New Jersey Gov. James “I’m a gay American” McGreevy, the late Congressman Gerry Studds and current House committee chairman Barney Frank.

Dark Ages Of Broadcasting Looms On The Horizon

-By Frederick Meekins

Don Imus’ comments that the Rutger’s ladies basketball team were a bunch of tattooed nappy-headed hoes might not have been the kindest thing to say about these athletes, though one must note the claim has not been entirely refuted as interestingly in appearances before the press the players have decided to conceal themselves behind jumpsuits so the American people can’t determine for themselves whether or not the team at least merits the tattooed classification. However, the response to these remarks, especially on the part of renowned rabblerousers such as Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, has gone far beyond the momentary discombobulation such a guffaw might elicit from more balanced people.

Not content to enjoy his victory, Al Sharpton now seeks to enshrine himself in a position as some kind of grand inquisitor with power greater than any elected office as from such a station there would be little way for the American people to drive him from his position of power as Sharpton plans to “…have a broad discussion about what is and is not permitted in terms of the airwaves.”

Observers astute enough to translate such verbal sludge oozing from the lips of politicians and similar human debris know that what Sharpton really means is that any White person that dares tick off rampaging Black leftists and their cowardly Caucasian sycophants are fair game for what Clarence Thomas categorized as an electronic lynching during his confirmation back in the early 1990’s.

MSM Highlight GOP ‘Defections’, Ignore Dems Voting Against Their Own

-By Warner Todd Huston

We are seeing all over the MSM the reports highlighting the Republicans in the House and Senate who are turning away from the Party line and voting against — or at least seeming to vote against — the President’s Iraq war policies. The MSM is presenting this revolt as a momentous thing, unprecedented and presenting it as a loss for the President’s ideas. Yet, even as a small number of Republicans have, indeed, voted against the Party line, an even larger number of Democrats are voting against their Party, too. Yet, somehow, we are not hearing this being brought up by the tongue waggers and controversy-mongers in the MSM.

In a July 12th vote in the House of Representatives to mandate a certain date to pull out of Iraq, for instance, the fact that four Republicans broke ranks is treated as a stampede of GOP defectors. Yet, in that same vote, 10 Democrats did not vote with their Party — in effect “defecting” to the GOP side of the argument. Of this fact, the MSM seem strangely quite.

Why is it that four Republican votes against the President’s plans is some sort of landslide, yet 10 Democrat votes against their Party line is ignored?

Scans of the 44-year-old man’s brain showed that a huge fluid-filled chamber called a ventricle took up most of the room in his skull, leaving little more than a thin sheet of actual brain tissue.

“He was a married father of two children, and worked as a civil servant,” Dr. Lionel Feuillet and colleagues at the Universite de la Mediterranee in Marseille wrote in a letter to the Lancet medical journal.

French Civil Service – Geniuses need not apply.

Ok, ok. It was a funny story. But, I have to step back and say one serious thing about it. This story does prove that the human body can do amazing things to make up for serious short comings.

Making a Difference

-By Thomas E. Brewton

If Christianity hasn’t made a positive difference in your life, you haven’t fully embraced it.

The question posed by Sunday’s sermon at Black Rock-Long Ridge Congregational Church (North Stamford, Connecticut) was “How Can I Be a New Creation?”

Rev. Josh Feay’s main text was:

Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience. We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. If we are out of our mind, it is for the sake of God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! (2 Corinthians 5:11-17)

Sun-Times Writer ‘harassed by Irate Republicans’ Over ‘Staunch Republican’ for Dems Story

-By Warner Todd Huston

Jennifer Hunter, the Chicago Sun-Times writer and wife of Sun-Times publisher John Cruickshank, who wrote the recent story I skewered a few days ago revealing a supposed “staunch Republican” from Philly who has suddenly decided to support the Democrats in 2008, has written a new piece today claiming she is being “harassed by a group of irate Republicans” because of her badly researched column. (The interviewee in her piece claimed to be a “staunch Republican” even as his cash donation records prove he almost exclusively supports Democrats) Her follow up, however, seems more like the kid caught with her hand in the cookie jar while blaming everyone around her as opposed to a satisfactory explanation of a failure to fully investigate her story.

Complaining… no, more like whining… that she has been flooded with “daily emails” calling her a liar and demanding that she be fired, Hunter-Cruickshank blames the headline writers instead of her own poor investigative work for the firestorm of criticism.

True Grit: Winning the Hearts and Minds of Al-Qaida

-By Lee Culpepper

I wonder if John Wayne is glad to be dead. If he were alive, I imagine our impotent politicians’ apologizing to the public about Iraq would kill him. Seems like America’s once-triumphant spirit endured through our unrelenting grit and hunger to prevail. Such perseverance remains a prerequisite to all success. Sadly, our new breed of representatives has no familiarity with the hunger necessary to win a war. Do you think our barbaric enemies suffer the same dilemma?

Have we simply grown used to life being too easy? Today 76% of the entire Congress has never served in the military (source: Military Officers Association of America). The 24% of Congress that has served should appreciate the perils inherent to military duty. People die during basic military exercises – danger is in the job description. The fact that warriors kill and also die is not romantic. Military victories come at high prices. Victory requires considerable pain and sacrifice. There was a time when Americans refused to consider defeat. However, the painful sacrifices we have endured in the past are now being polluted by nauseating, limp-wristed politicians who are folding to the insolence and intimidation of an enemy who rejoices in fear and death. Perhaps more telling of our politicians’ moral fiber appears in their cowering to opinion polls.

Three Good Reasons to Become a Teacher: June, July & August

-By Nancy Salvato

“Oh, to live on Sugar Mountain, With the barkers and the colored balloons . . .”
– Neil Young

In the July 9, 2007 Issue of National Review is a short piece on “Workaholics”. In it, the author makes the argument that Americans are preoccupied, actually obsessed, with work. He comes to this conclusion based on a number of factors. First, he points out that any increase in leisure activities over the past four decades is due to electronic appliances making our lives easier. Secondly, people living in Italy, France, Germany, the UK, Canada and Japan can take advantage of 10-28 more vacation days than the average 14 allotted to Americans. Most remarkable is that, on average, Americans, don’t even take advantage of three of their vacation days.

Reading the aforementioned article, I couldn’t help but feel that the author, Kevin Hassett, could have explored this subject much further. Although interesting in and of itself, this tidbit of information was just the jumping off place for something more central in understanding what a cross section of Americans are willing to do to maintain a particular standard of living, forge a career, or keep a roof over their heads. Something else he doesn’t explore is the idea that there are people who do enjoy working, who find it feels a need in them to be doing something useful, perhaps for the betterment of society. But his most egregious omission is something that I, an education reformer, noticed straight away. What about teachers?

NYTimes Wants us to Feel Sorry for an Illegal Immigrant’s Deportation

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last week, the New York Times ran an article feeling sorry for an illegal immigrant turned immigrant’s “rights” activist who was discovered by a random immigration check on an Amtrak train and subsequently slated to be deported back to Chile, his homeland. The Times tried to massage readers into feeling bad for the man because he had been here since 1984 when he illegally crossed the Mexico/US border — apparently the Times imagines that time bestows legality as opposed to obeying laws serving that purpose.

An axiom has resonated throughout the country that the NYT doesn’t seem to grasp; “What part of illegal don’t you understand?”

Nobel Laureate Calls for Bush’s Death at ‘Peace’ Conference

-By Warner Todd Huston

Before I tell you how the Dallas Morning News is breathlessly reporting that Nobel laureate Betty Williams called for the death of President Bush at the “International Women’s Peace Conference” in Dallas on the 11th, I must remind you all that peace activists on the left are far more “civilized”, “Humane”, “tolerant”, and “intelligent” than the rest of us. OK? I just wanted to get that straight before further relating this story.

James Hohmann of the News reports that Williams, who is Irish and not a US citizen by the way, “came all the way from Ireland to Texas to declare that President Bush should be impeached.”

I suppose we should be flattered… or not.

Interestingly, Burying the obvious leade, the News decides to avoid mention of the violent intent of the speaker who later says “Right now, I could kill George Bush” with a title that belies her serious hypocrisy. “Irish peace activist’s speech at Dallas event gets standing ovation”, it says in sunny, innocent language.

Yet the content of this woman’s rant is far more insidious than the sunny title portends.
