Muslims Forcing London Girls to Convert to Islam, Face Violence

More from the “religion of peace” is a story out of London, Police protect girls forced to convert to Islam.

Extremist Muslims who force vulnerable teenage girls to convert to Islam are being targeted by police, Met chief Sir Ian Blair has revealed.

Police are working with universities to clamp down on “aggressive conversions” during which girls are beaten up and forced to abandon university courses.

The Hindu Forum of Britain claims hundreds of mostly Sikh and Hindu girls have been intimidated by Muslim men who take them out on dates before terrorising them until they convert.

Ramesh Kallidai, of the Hindu Forum of Britain, said: “Some girls are petrified because they are constantly being phoned up, having their door knocked.

“One girl was beaten up on the street and others have been forced to leave university.”

The very essence of western civilization is education and here we have what is purportedly a western city, one of the premier cities therein, seeing defenseless young women having their very ability to join in the benefits of our civilization being threatened.

Lieberman Says it Well

Again, Joe Lieberman — the Democratic party’s 2000 presidential candidate — said it well on Friday:

The non-binding resolution before us is not about stopping a hypothetical plan. It is about disapproving a plan that is being carried out now by our fellow Americans in uniform, in the field. In that sense, as I have said, it is unprecedented in Congressional history, in American history. This resolution is about shouting into the wind. It is about ignoring realities of what’s happening on the ground in Baghdad.

It proposes nothing. It contains no plan for victory or retreat. It proposes nothing. It is a strategy of “no,” while our soldiers are saying, “yes, sir” to their commanding officers as they go forward into battle.

And that is why I will vote against the resolution by voting against cloture.

Iran feels a Nuclear War is no Big Deal

Too many today assume that Iran getting a nuclear arsenal might not be so bad. There are various reasons they posit for this position, from Iran being sovereign and, therefore, unstoppable — and so it is none of our business, anyway — to the idea of equating Iran with the U.S.S.R. of the Cold War resulting in an assumption that a basic stalemated safety will result from a policy of containment (and a return to MAD) which will work to prevent the fanatics in charge of Iran from using them.

In the former, the sovereign position is one that stands on its own and one must either take it at face value assuming that no nation has a right or a place to attempt to interfere in any other nation’s business, or one must accept that all governments have a right or a moral duty to attempt to interject their interests in other nation’s affairs when said nation becomes a danger to others after some fashion or another. It’s either stay out (the Utopian libertarian ideal) or realize that things are more complicated than that. After all, the world left Hitler on his own without interfering much during that perceived era of “peace in our times”, but a healthy dose of George W. Bush’s doctrine of intervention would have, in retrospect, been a good idea in response to Hitler.

In the later, pundits assume that Iran understands the concept of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) and that they would not be so stupid as to launch a nuke for fear of their own destruction in retaliation. This theory relies on a basic assumption that the Iranians are as “reasonable” as the Soviets were.

But, those who imagine that Iran is run by people who are “just like us” in that they are sensible people who just want to make a living and live their lives like “normal people” should be stunned by what now former Iranian leader, Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, a so-called moderate, said in a Qods day speech given in 2001.

Jack Murtha: The Britney Spears of Congress

The worst thing about pop culture celebrities is their ever downwardly spiraling behavior. To get noticed they feel they must indulge in ever more outrageous behavior until they end up dead like Anna Nichol Smith or a drunken, debauched mess like the empty-headed Britney Spears. Sadly, the media and the gossip rags eat it up.

This pathology to attention mongering isn’t, though, exclusive to these so-called celebrities. In fact, such “notice” can sing a siren song for politicians, too. Especially those who imagine themselves populists.

It isn’t enough to have a principle and fight for it. That “principle” must be expanded ever more and the targets that the principle is applied against must be ever more extreme. Jack Murtha fits this political definition to a tee.

Jack Murtha is the Britney Spears of Congress. And his anti-war stance is the avenue to his pathological need to be noticed. And he isn’t alone.

Utah’s Teenage Killer, the Muslim Connection Ignored

I have been watching the “reportage” on the regrettable incident of a teenaged killer’s rampage in a Utah shopping mall with mounting interest. In nearly every story of this crime the fact that this youngster is from a Muslim background is either muted or ignored altogether.

The AP, for instance, avoids identifying the boy as a Muslim in all their stories that I saw. In one, they merely identify the region in Bosnia in which he lived as the “northeastern enclave where up to 8,000 Muslim men and boys were slaughtered in 1995” but do not even speculate as to the boy or his family being Muslims. It is all rather dutifully avoided. In another story, the AP doesn’t even use the word Muslim at all.

Even in the local press, like the Utah Desert News, the issue of his background is ignored or made entirely incidental. The Desert News, in fact, makes just one mention that the “family are Muslims from Bosnia who had lived in the vicinity of Sarajevo” in a rather lengthy and otherwise complete story of the incident.

Worse, the New York Times is making the wild assumption that it is “Bosnian immigrants”, not the rest of America, that should be afraid for their lives in theirs titled “Anti-Bosnian Backlash Feared in Utah”.

The Evil of Carter Strikes Again

With his ever spiraling downward reputation as a Jew hater, Jimmy Carter has done it again. This time, Brandeis University has seen its donors announce that they will no longer send their money to the University because they hosted a visit from the racist ex-president.

How much more will it take for people to slap their heads in realization that Carter is a wild-eyed, Jew hater and should be relegated to the same scrap heap of history his disastrous presidency was relegated to in 1980 when Ronald Reagan destroyed him at the polls?

The Brandeis campus is reeling in the wake of former President Jimmy Carter’s visit.

Major donors to Brandeis University have informed the school they will no longer give it money in retaliation for its decision last month to host former President Jimmy Carter, a strong critic of Israel.

The donors have notified the school in writing of their decisions — and specified Carter as the reason, said Stuart Eizenstat, a former aide to Carter during his presidency and a current trustee of Brandeis, one of the nation’s premier Jewish institutions of higher learning.

Unrest in Middle East is all USA’s Fault… or it isn’t

In keeping with their constant quest to saddle the USA with the fault for the growing unrest in he Middle East, the Washington Post has unleashed another article, replete with some efforts to blame-the-USA-first, titled “Across Arab World, a Widening Rift”.

In the first paragraph, writer Anthony Shadid illustrates the traditionally intertwined nature of Egypt’s Sunni and Shiite communities showing us how they have so easily coexisted in the recent past but quickly gets to the warnings of the danger of the Shiites “rising”.

Naturally, this is the fault of the USA who has left Arabs with a sense of “powerlessness and a persistent suspicion of American intentions.” The rise of unrest is also blamed on the “United States and others for inflaming it”.

Later in the piece, Shadid takes further aim at the USA in particular and the West in general.

“There’s a proverb that says, ‘Divide and conquer,’ ” Mohammed said. “Sunnis and Shiites — they’re not both Muslims? What divides them? Who wants to divide them? In whose interest is it to divide them?” he asked.

“It’s in the West’s interest,” he answered. “And at the head of it is America and Israel.” He paused. “And Britain.”

That sense of Western manipulation is often voiced by Shiite clerics and activists, who say the United States incites sectarianism as a way of blunting Iran’s influence. In recent years, some of the most provocative comments have come from America’s allies in the region: Egypt’s president questioned Shiites’ loyalty to their countries, Jordan’s king warned of a coming Shiite crescent from Iran to Lebanon, and last month King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia denounced what he called Shiite proselytizing

This illustrates the prosaic penchant for Muslims to resort to overarching and mostly absurd conspiracy theorizing. Blaming everyone but themselves is epidemic in Islam. After all, they are “God’s people” so they couldn’t be wrong, it is presumed.

Kicking The Habit (Oil Isn’t As Slick As Bureaucrats)

Of late all we seem to hear about is the need to kick the oil habit. Before I address this I want to comment to those who seem to say this so often. Do you really think that the radical Muslims will stay away from you just because we leave their benighted land? Get a grip. All cowardice ever receives as payment is more hostility by an emboldened attacker. If I injured the sensibilities of any of the liberals out there I would like to say I’m sorry. But I won’t.

What is needed now is another Republican Revolution. I mean the kind that we almost had when Gingrich and company took Congress back in the very first election held after Bill and his significant other were in office. Here are a few things that did get done. For the first time in years private business owners were actually able to write off their own medical insurance costs. Didn’t hear much about that did you?! All of those really neat herbs and supplements you can now get in the store — they weren’t available until the Republicans took Congress back from Moscow West. And eventually the Republicans also let the stupid assault weapons ban die a quiet death. They never did get to do all of the things they wanted to do. In spite of what the media said, little has changed as far as taxes except for Bush’s tax cut. The flat tax went the way of the pterodactyl but it is about to return as the Democrat albatross. I will enjoy watching them pitch their totally original and awesome idea of tax increases for everyone. Some people just don’t learn.

TV Turns Soldiers Into Torturers

The AP has found a new way to attack TV’s 24. They say that because of the depiction of character Jack Bauer’s, shall we say, short-cuts in interrogating prisoners his ways have now infected the US Military. Absurdly, the AP is advancing the case, in “Does Jack Bauer Influence Interrogators?”, that “there are indications that real-life American interrogators in Iraq are taking cues from what they see on television.”

Are they indeed? Says who?

Predictably the AP reports these claims are from the “advocacy group Human Rights First”.

No surprise there, eh?

Extricate by 2008-Politcal Poker

Hillary may not be so smart after all or else she is betting that the rest of us are stupid. Her long anticipated announcement as a serious presidential contender was followed quickly by this revealing bombast against President George Bush and Commander in Chief in the war with Islamofacism. “I think it’s the height of irresponsibility and I really resent it – this was his decision to go to war, he went with an ill-conceived plan, an incompetently executed strategy, and we should expect him to extricate our country from this before he leaves office.”

She also admitted to being fooled into voting for the war before she voted against it. “So he took the authority that I and others gave him and he misused it…And if we had known then what we know now, there never would have been a vote and I never would have voted to give this president that authority.”

She “really resents it!” What she really is unhappy about is the prospect that if she ever achieves the object of her ego-mania, she will inherit a preemptive militaristic foreign policy against terrorist domination of the Middle East.

No doubt she had envisioned for herself another cakewalk administration modeled after the one she had partnered in with her husband where the threat of a brutal warring dictator in Iraq was ignored. For his two terms in office, now remembered as the “holiday from history”, our draft-dodging playboy president office steadfastly and repeatedly chose not to protect this country against terrorist attacks but rather to project the façade of a “peace and prosperity” administration.

Democrats in Aid to Insurgents – It Finally IS Vietnam all Over Again

It is a shocker, but the AP actually let loose a kernel of truth about the situation in Iraq in one of their reports for a change. To wit, if Iraqi insurgents wait long enough, the USA will leave and they can come back on the scene with guns blazing and knives sharpened for decapitations.

In the streets of Sadr City, the strategy of Muqtada al-Sadr, the Shiite militia leader, is clear: Lie low, avoid a showdown and hope to emerge even stronger after the Americans leave.

This must have been a mistake. The AP would never knowingly give opponents of a pullout such ammo for discussion.

Naturally, they do not develop the reason that al-Sadr has come to this strategy, but the fact that they revealed that strategy at all is a refreshing change from their steady and nearly unwavering support for the anti-USA crowd on the left that is the usual AP fare.

Chicago Sun-Times: Warning About Christian Fascists

Wash Post: Democrats Forgot How to be ‘Ferocious’

Dana Milbank is mad at Democrats for somehow letting Former Iraq Chief Paul Bremer off the hook today in the Washington Post’s ”Rusty Democrats Unable to Pin Anything on Bremer”.

I guess to show he is a real meterosexual, Milbank starts his piece off with an observation on Bremer’s choice of footwear and draws the wild conclusion that it must say something about his mental state.

Jerry Bremer wore black dress shoes instead of his trademark combat boots yesterday as he testified before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. But except for that concession, the former American viceroy of Iraq had lost none of his swagger.

That observation lacks so much on substance that it is laughable. Does wearing combat boots in a desert, while walking around battle-damaged buildings, or in areas where nearly everyone is so shod somehow speak to Bremer’s arrogance, his “swagger”??

If a fan wears gym shoes to a basketball game, would that speak to the fan’s assumptions that he is as good as Michael Jordan or those players on the court?

With that weak attempt to scold Bremer for his arrogant choice of footwear done, Milbank goes on to insinuate that he is guilty of malfeasance during his time in Iraq.

We’ve Been Here Before (Grow Up Or Get Out of the Way)

In the early part of this nations history we can find the first echoes of what we are currently attempting to grasp and deal with. There we can also find the answers to our current problems. There has been a lot of cheering about inclusiveness from the left lately. It has to do with the swearing in of a certain Islamic Congressman who is unsurprisingly from Minnesota, a state that is not only on the outskirts of the nation but also on the outskirts of reality.

The swearing in of this particular congressman was performed on the copy of the Koran once owned by Thomas Jefferson. Many have questioned why Jefferson would have owned a copy of that book. Well, if the truth be told, he had copies of just about any book on any religion. This was one of the few books that survived the burning of his library. I for one am quite pleased that it did. I’m also quite pleased that someone who is ignorant of history, I assume, suggested that Ellison use that book.

At the very start of this nation we were dealing with the Pirates of Barbary. They were capturing our ships and impeding commerce with other nations. Once the United States was free of Britain we were also free of her protection. The British had been paying the demanded tributes. Tripoli had demanded $225,000 in cash and annual payments of $25,000. Adams was inclined to follow the model of the British but Jefferson wasn’t. Jefferson tried to form an international coalition to fight them but that failed because then, like now, everyone decided it was easier to give the bully their lunch money.

Democrats Invite Radical Muslim to Speak at Nat’l Committee Meeting

Unbelievably, the Democrats invited a radical Muslim Imam to give an invocation at their Democratic National Committee Winter Meeting today. His name is Husham al-Husainy and he is Imam of the Karbalaa Islamic Foundation in Dearborn, Michigan (a Shi’ite sect). – VIDEO LINK.

During this “prayer”, al-Husainy said:

We thank you, god to send us your messages through our father Abraham, and Jesus and Mohammed, through you, god, we unite, so guide us to the right spot we wish for peace, equality and help us to stop the war and violence, and oppression and occupation.

At first thought and to the western mind, that almost sounds benign. After all, didn’t he invoke Jesus and Abraham there? However, as Robert Spencer notes in Islam ” all of these (Jesus, Mohammed, and Abraham) were prophets who taught Islam, and that the followers of Moses and Jesus corrupted their teachings to create Judaism and Christianity. So what seems to be a gesture of ecumenical generosity is actually a declaration of religious imperialism and the delegitimization of other religions.”

Spencer goes on to say:

Also, imagine if a Christian priest or minister had prayed at a DNC meeting that those attending be guided away from the path of those doomed by God. In this, in any case, the Imam is echoing the Fatiha, the first sura of the Qur’an and most common prayer of Islam. It asks Allah: “Show us the straight path, the path of those whom Thou hast favoured; not the (path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray.” The traditional Islamic understanding of this is that the “straight path” is Islam

Leave it to Democrats to allow what they would term “hate speech” were it a Christian utilizing similarly inspired rhetoric to basically denounce other religions.

Successes and Setbacks in the “Long War”

A year ago the Pentagon released its Quadrennial Defense Review. It was essentially a strategy for a 20-year “long war” and a generational battle plan designed to prepare the military for a Cold War type struggle against the forces of militant Islam. According to the official unveiling:
“Since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, our nation has fought a global war against violent extremists who use terrorism as their weapon of choice, and who seek to destroy our free way of life. Our enemies seek weapons of mass destruction and, if they are successful, will likely attempt to use them in their conflict with free people everywhere. Currently, the struggle is centered in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we will need to be prepared and arranged to successfully defend our nation and its interests around the globe for years to come.”
It is apparent that the United States and its assorted allies are still seeking to adequately define its enemy, reach a consensus on tactics, and achieve some sort of victory in (or graceful exit from) Iraq. In this age of round the clock news and information it is easy to get caught up in the crisis of the moment. But it is also important that we examine the big picture in the War on Terror and take the time to look back at some of the successes and setbacks experienced since 9-11.

England: One Law for Muslims, one for the Rest

England is fast becoming but simple a plot of land floating in the sea instead of a nation of culture guided by a rich legal tradition. It is a tale of warning for the USA, the moral of which is don’t allow minorities to set up a parallel culture or you will cease to be a nation of laws. You will, in fact, cease to be a nation at all.

England is on the verge of having a bifurcated legal system, one for their various religious peoples and one for the rest of the native population. Two recent stories show the degradation of the British legal system and the inequities that it creates.

The end of one law for all?, the question is asked: “Ethnic and religious courts are gaining ground in the UK. Will this lead to different justice for different people?”

How could this be that hard to answer?

The initial Obama obstacle is relative

Barack, you got some ‘splainin’ to do. Or so it seems as Senator Obama, a leading Democratic candidate, recently devoted time he could have spent on important stuff like fundraising to deny he was educated at an extremist Muslim school.

Maybe Mr. Obama is kicking himself for writing “Dreams from My Father” a dozen years ago. That book provided numerous details that Team Clinton otherwise would have had to hire private detectives to unearth.
Obama reveals in his book that for two years he attended a Muslim school in Indonesia: “In the Muslim school, the teacher wrote to tell my mother that I made faces during Koranic studies.”

Young Barack appears to have been an equal opportunity skeptic. He went to a Catholic school for two years and “when it came time to pray, I would pretend to close my eyes, then peek around the room. Nothing happened. No angels descended. Just a parched old nun and thirty brown children, muttering words.”

Palestinian Family ‘Locked Up’ For Immigration Violations

WFAA TV in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas market has been touting a story that they obviously think is some sort of tragedy. So bad, in fact, that the first words of their story are, “‘Inhumanity’ and ‘atrocity’ are just two words being used to describe news…”

One would think that the world was ending, wouldn’t one?

The TV station is wracked up in high dudgeon over a family of Palestinians who are in the country illegally and were scooped up by Immigration officials and remanded to a rather posh housing center to await the outcome of the machinations of government officials trying to determine their fate.

US Reaction to 9/11 Just a ‘Massive Overreaction’?

Nearly 3,000 Americans killed in a series of attacks on one single day — the most American civilians ever killed in a single day with coordinated attacks — was no big deal as far as David Bell writing for the L.A. Times is concerned.

The attacks were a horrible act of mass murder, but history says we’re overreacting.

See, they know this because Russia had a bad time of it during WWII.

…imagine that the attacks had continued, every six hours, for another four years, until nearly 20 million Americans were dead. This is roughly what the Soviet Union suffered during World War II, and contemplating these numbers may help put in perspective what the United States has so far experienced during the war against terrorism.

Such a ridiculous comparison. WWII, a standard, symmetrical war, bears little resemblance to this threat we face today. The Russians were under arms facing Hitler. It wasn’t a “nice” war, surely, but it was a standard war none-the-less. Hitler invaded and the Russians resisted.

Standard war stuff, really.

CBS Report Uses al Qaeda Propaganda Film, Claims it’s ‘CBS Obtained’

So, here is a question: Why is CBS using propaganda film originally posted on an al Qaeda website and claiming it is merely “CBS obtained” with no mention of the actual source for Lara Logan’s report on The “Battle of Haifa Street”?

The anti-Iraq website called Iraqslogger posted a story about how CBS reporter Lara Logan is crying that CBS seems to have spiked her “Haifa Street” story . Logan has sent out a mass email to all her friends and colleagues in the world of journalism in hopes that they will pressure CBS to show her report that has not yet made it to TV. It has, though, appeared on the internet.

In her email, Logan claims that this story is “largely being ignored” and she asks for her pals to email CBS to get them to air it. But she urged supporters not to mention her “request” to pressure the network to air the piece if they did so. I guess she feels like begging is unseemly…. even though she is doing it anyway.

But, Iraq watcher, Nibras Kazimi a Visiting Scholar at the Hudson Institute in Washington DC., noticed something strange about Logan’s piece.

CBS News Radio: ‘Nation Says No to War’, Protests Exaggerated

On a long drive home from a Indianapolis this weekend, I had the dubious pleasure of listening to a CBS news break at the top of the hour on a talk station and in one of their reports on Saturday’s anti-War protests the verbiage used to report the gatherings was so slanted that it was startling and was so obviously intended to make it seem much greater than it really was that it wasn’t even funny.

Reporter Jim Taylor started his report saying “A nation says no to war …” as an introduction to the story of the goings on in Washington.

A “nation” says no? A few protests equates the the whole nation, CBS?

Senate Hypocrisy on Anti-Iraq Resolution

Even as the Senate is falling all over itself to seem like they are being stern with president Bush, even as they are puffing themselves up as populists and hearing “the people’s ” dislike of the war, the Armed Services committee voted unanimously to approve the nomination of Army Lieutenant General David Petraeus to command U-S forces in Iraq.

So, while members of the Senate want to pretend they are against the war, they quietly approve the a general who has vocally and forcefully advocated Bush’s troop surge plans!

Just one more example of the smoke screen the Senate has thrown up on this issue. Cynically acting as if they are heeding the anti-war call while approving the warrior that will put what amounts to a sort of escalation.

The Senate trying to have it both ways with the sole goal to undercut Bush.

Stopping the Republican Senators Who Support Anti-Iraq Resolution

As I post this, it is apparent that several Republican Senators are supporting a non-binding resolution that will express no support of president Bush’s new direction in Iraq and will directly denounce the raising of troop levels in Baghdad.

The non-binding resolution sponsored by Senators Chuck Hagel (R, Neb), Joe Biden (D, Del.) and Carl Levin (D, Mich) passed the Senate Foreign Relations committee 12-9. The whole of the Senate will now get a chance to weigh in.

Worse news is the trio of Republican Senators who offered their own anti-Iraq resolution in the committee.

Republican Senators John Warner of Virginia, Susan Collins of Maine and Norm Coleman of Minnesota as well as Democratic Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska offered a resolution of their own concurrently with the initial attempt to attack Bush’s policy offered by Hagel.

Media: Bush’s ‘Flawed’ Portrayal of ‘The Enemy’ in State of the Union Address

In response to president Bush’s State of the Union Address, the Washington Post’s main criticism seems to be that Bush doesn’t understand who “the enemy” is in the Global War on Terror. Yet as the Post proceeds to knock what they perceive as Bush’s simple minded rhetoric with today’s news article they only reveal it is they, rather, that has no idea who our enemies are.

In his State of the Union address last night, President Bush presented an arguably misleading and often flawed description of “the enemy” that the United States faces overseas, lumping together disparate groups with opposing ideologies to suggest that they have a single-minded focus in attacking the United States.

The Post’s conception of “flawed” is just as ill considered as they imagine the president’s to be and their analysis adds up merely to mirror the conception held by many Europeans.

Once again, a National U.S. paper “arguably” chooses sides with Europe’s interests over that of America.

Soft People, Hard People

If the 1976 western The Last Hard Men has it right, we Occidentals metamorphosed into jellyfish sometime around the early twentieth century. Although this title is more movie marketing than historical statement, there may be something to it. After all, Robert Baden-Powell, a lieutenant general in the British Army, was motivated by the belief that western boys were becoming too soft when he originated the Boy Scouts in 1907.

Regardless of the origin and rapidity of our transition from he-men to she-men, one thing is for certain: We have become a very soft people.

When pondering this, I think about how it is now common to see men cry publicly. Just recently George Bush Sr. broke down while rendering a speech, something unthinkable a generation ago. Why, presidential aspirant Edmund Muskie saw his campaign scuttled by a few inopportune tears in 1972. And before you score me for not embracing the metrosexual model, remember the impression this gives the rest of the world. Feminization may be fashionable, but it doesn’t engender respect among the more patriarchal peoples.

Internet Store Tells Ordering US Soldier ‘Pull Out of Iraq’

Resa LaRu “Warchick” Kirkland, one of our correspondents here on Publius’ Forum, has been trying to clear up a wretched email that was sent to one of our boys in Iraq refusing him service and telling him he should “pull out of Iraq”.

Fox News has picked up this story that I have been watching for a few days. I’ve been trying to ascertain if it was real or another example of an internet hoax — sometimes it isn’t easy to tell these days — but I think I can safely say it is real at this point. It has been rather hot news in Wisconsin over the last 48 hours, too.

The question is, will we see it farther and wider? Will the MSM pick up this story of our solder being ill treated by Discount-Mats.com, a Muslim owned, Wisconsin based floor mat company?

Army Sgt. Jason Hess, stationed in Taji, Iraq wanted to purchase a few floor mats form use in his station in Iraq and emailed the Wisconsin based floor mat company to ask if they would ship to an APO address in Iraq?

CBS News: We Report From the Middle, No Bias Here

When CBS launched their blog Public Eye in Sept. of 2005 they claimed it would give us “the journalists who make the important editorial decisions at CBS News and CBSNews.com” and that those journalists “will now be asked to explain and answer questions about those decisions in a public forum.”

While the jury might be out on the success of their task, we can certainly wonder at their ability to step away from themselves to render balanced judgment. Especially in the case of their recent story, “Biased In Both Directions”, where they declare that the MSM is reporting “in the middle” where it concerns stories about Iraq.

Viewers from the left and right might occasionally be annoyed by the tenor of the coverage, but they gravitated to the evening newscasts anyway, since … they remained more or less in the middle…

Paper: Conservatives Have ‘No Qualms About Torturing’ Prisoners

Are you a Conservative who likes the TV show “24”? If so, then Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writer Eugene Kane has divined why you like it so much. It’s because you have “no qualms about torturing” prisoners.

In a gratuitous insult to all intelligent Conservatives everywhere, Mr Kane has declared you all to be slobbering Neanderthals who would rather beat your enemy to death with a club than use diplomacy and that the law obviously means nothing to you.

Some speculate one reason “24” is such a favorite of the Bush crowd is that Bauer is presented as a guy with no qualms about torturing his prisoners in order to get information as quickly as possible. In light of criticism the Bush administration gets for its torture policies, it doesn’t take a think-tank expert to see why some hail the show as a breath of clean air.

Anti-war Conservatives vs. Foreign Policy Realists

Reports indicate that Bush will advocate an increase in troop strength in Iraq when he publicly announces his new policy for Iraq. This policy has been dubbed “surging” and is also supported by Sen. McCain and other hawks. Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Reid have already spoken out against a surge. How this will all play out from a public relations and political standpoint remains to be seen.

Planning for a surge may well have been in the works for some time, but the timing of Bush rethinking the policy in Iraq was clearly precipitated by the unfavorable results (.pdf document) of the Iraq Study Group (ISG). Ironically, if the ISG was suggesting a de-escalation and eventual withdrawal, they may end up precipitating the opposite. In the name of “doing something” or “changing tactics” the findings of the ISG arguably give Bush some political cover for increasing troop numbers that he might not have had otherwise.

The liberal media celebrated the ISG’s findings as a severe blow to the Bush administration and its policies in Iraq. Predictably the conservative punditry reacted indignantly to the report and cried that the recommendations were tantamount to surrender. An apparent RNC talking point is that the Commission should be renamed the Iraq Surrender Group, an admittedly catchy but obviously simplistic formulation.
