10 Questions For Mr. Obama

Vets for Freedom

Dear Senator,

The American Legion, Vets for Freedom, Military Families United and Foundation for Defense of Democracies would like to congratulate you on winning your party’s nomination for President of the United States.

This Tuesday, you will participate in the second Presidential debate of the general election where the candidates will answer questions from real Americans in a town hall format. This letter contains 10 questions on national security and foreign policy – questions that should be answered by any candidate seeking the highest office in our land. Our organizations ask that you address and answer these questions in Tuesday’s debate and in a written response.

Many challenges lie ahead of the next Commander-in-Chief: wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, global radical Islamic terrorism, a destabilizing Pakistan, an aggressive Iranian regime intent on building nuclear weapons, a strained U.S. military and energy dependence on Middle Eastern oil.

Truly, there has never been a greater need for strong American leadership.

Our combined organizations represent over 3.5 million constituents, which is America’s largest collection of veterans, gold and blue star families and national security experts. We have joined forces because we recognize the stakes have never been higher – the costs never greater. Our next President must understand the grave challenges we face and be prepared to lead and defend our homeland.

Again, congratulations on your victory and we look forward to your prompt reply.

Sincerely,

Dave Rehbein
National Commander, The American Legion

Pete Hegseth
Chairman, Vets for Freedom

Brian Wise
Executive Director, Military Families United

Cliff May
President, Foundation for Defense of Democracies

  1. Under your administration, what would an American-Iraqi partnership look like? What is your vision for the future of Iraq? Can we win? Are we winning? Must we win?
  2. Dexter Filkins of the New York Times recently reported on the overwhelming reduction in violence and local reconciliation among Sunnis and Shias in Baghdad. Do you agree that the “Surge” achieved its stated goals – militarily and politically – and is the reason for stabilization in Iraq? And, knowing what you know now, would you again support or oppose General Petraeus’ counterinsurgency strategy?
  3. General Petraeus recently reiterated his belief that Iraq is still a “central front” for our enemies, and therefore our country. Do you believe Iraq is, has been, or ever could be “a” or “the” central front against radical Islamists?
  4. Under your administration, will you consider winning in Afghanistan a necessity and will you propose more troops and/or a new strategy?
  5. With a new civilian government in place, unilateral American action against suspected al-Qaeda and Taliban targets has been condemned as a right of sovereignty by Pakistan. Do you support certain military action in Pakistan, despite the government’s warnings of retaliation, if there is credible intelligence of high value terrorist targets?
  6. Do you believe that we are engaged in a global war on terrorism? And do you believe that radical Islam is our generation’s transcendent challenge?
  7. The American military is strained from fighting two wars; under your administration, what would you do to strengthen our fighting force? And what impact would victory or defeat on the battlefield have on our force?
  8. Are you committed to a nuclear-free Iran? If so, what steps would your administration be willing to take to ensure Iran does not get a nuclear weapon?
  9. Should America invest in a comprehensive missile defense system? Or is it safe to assume that our contemporary enemies can be deterred, as were the Soviets, by the prospect of “mutually assured destruction”?
  10. America is sending over $700 billion overseas to buy foreign oil from countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela. Many of our petro-dollars make their way into the hands of terrorist organizations – we are funding both sides in the war on terror through our dependence on Middle Eastern oil. What steps will your administration take to make sure America starts on the path towards energy independence?

Long Depression was FDR’s Fault

-By Warner Todd Huston

I have for years been saying that Franklin D. Roosevelt prolonged the Great Depression with his anti-capitalist, anti-American New Deal polices. Looks like some professors at UCLA agree with me.

“President Roosevelt believed that excessive competition was responsible for the Depression by reducing prices and wages, and by extension reducing employment and demand for goods and services,” said Cole, also a UCLA professor of economics. “So he came up with a recovery package that would be unimaginable today, allowing businesses in every industry to collude without the threat of antitrust prosecution and workers to demand salaries about 25 percent above where they ought to have been, given market forces. The economy was poised for a beautiful recovery, but that recovery was stalled by these misguided policies.”

Many people have been fooled by left-wing hortatory (or maybe whore-atory is closer) biographies for years. FDR was our savior, they claim. In truth, FDR was a failure in everything but the prosecution of the war. If there was no WWII FDR would have gone down in history as an utter failure.

FDR was the closest thing we’ve ever had to a socialist in the White House and has an utterly undeserved reputation. In any case his reputation for saving the economy is pure bunk.

“The fact that the Depression dragged on for years convinced generations of economists and policy-makers that capitalism could not be trusted to recover from depressions and that significant government intervention was required to achieve good outcomes,” Cole said. “Ironically, our work shows that the recovery would have been very rapid had the government not intervened.”

I’m glad the university set are finally coming to the side of reality and truth on this at long last.

Brian Williams: McCain/Palin Shunning Him Because of Olbermann/Matthews

-By Warner Todd Huston

In the Actions have consequences department, Brian Williams recently told David Letterman that the McCain camp is punishing him by not allowing him to interview Sarah Palin because the McCain camp is mad at MSNBC’s extreme leftism as evinced by Chris "Thrill up my leg" Matthews and Keith Olbermann. Is Brian crying? There’s no crying in broadcasting!

During his visit on The Late Show with David Letterman, Brian Williams admitted that he is the only network anchor that has yet to be granted an interview with Governor Palin but that he “cannot wait” to interview her.

As to why he has yet to be granted that interview, Williams thinks it’s because the McCain camp is “unhappy” with the far left editorial leanings of NBC’s cable outlet MSNBC.

“I’ve put a general invite out to the campaign,” Williams told Letterman. “I’ve asked them about it. We think it’s because they’re unhappy with our cable programming. But I’m here. I’m waiting.”

Obama’s Kenyan Pal… Killer, Despot

-By Warner Todd Huston

Raila Odinga is well known Kenyan communist, dictator, and despot, and is responsible for genocide. Barack Obama was his biggest American supporter. At taxpayer expense, Obama campaigned for Odinga in Kenya.

Odinga is just one more inhuman cretin in Obama’s orbit.

Newsweek: Obama Just like Lincoln?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Howard Fineman has no knowledge of history. In fact, it would not surprise me if we should find out some day that, in his original draft of this absurd comparison of Lincoln to Obama, he even spelled Lincoln’s name wrong. It is just that obvious that Fineman knows nothing of what he speaks. You see, Howard Fineman has decided that Barack Obama is somehow just like Abraham Lincoln. This is hero worship at its worst without being weighed down by any facts. It’s so bad that one wonders if Fineman had a Matthewsian “thrill up his leg” when writing this sycophantic slop?

In pondering if he should write a story about Obama’s connections to Chicago, Illinois, Fineman found his mind wandering to Abraham Lincoln — “the only president ‘from’ that city,” as Fineman says.

And right there we have the first stretch of reality to fit Fineman’s gauzy feelings. Lincoln was neither from nor “from” Chicago. Lincoln certainly visited the city during his lifetime but he never lived in Chicago and was never considered “from” there. His political machine was also not “from” there. His was very much a down state machine centered in Springfield, the State Capitol. So right off the top we have a tenuous connection between Lincoln and Obama whipped up to absurd proportions in Fineman’s mind.

The Reid-McConnell Bailout Bribe

-By Frank Salvato

Let me see if I have this right. We the People express our overwhelming disdain for a government manufactured, taxpayer-funded bailout of semi-coerced greed merchants on Wall Street and the Senate’s answer is to leave the offending legislation intact and entice weak politicians into voting for the package by adding sweetheart tax legislation to it. Can this possibly – in the most incredible of circumstances – be correct?

Just as I finished setting up my new television I found myself clearing away the debris and dust from a bazooka shot that destroyed it. You see, I felt the destruction needed to be that much more definitive as the cause for the need to do so was that much more offensive.

It is one thing to watch a political charlatan like Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) lie through his teeth about his role in constructing the financial catastrophe in which we are now mired; that warrants an “Elvis Episode.” But when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and – incredulously – Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) stand before the nation, on national television, and congratulate themselves for: a) working together in a bi-partisan manner, and b) working in a bi-partisan manner to achieve something an overwhelming majority of their bosses (the electorate) oppose, well, that calls for a response ala Gen. George S. Patton; therefore the bazooka.

Obama: His Ambition Has Outrun His Ability!

-By Don Boys, Ph.D.

Face it; if another candidate as inexperienced as Obama suggested that he was considering a run for the U.S. presidency, he would be laughed off the stage. Why is Obama the exception? Why are not Americans rolling in hilarious laughter at his presumption? It is not because he is a Democrat or radical liberal or part of the corrupt Chicago political machine. It is because he is black; however, color (or race or religion) is not a qualification or disqualification for any office.

The thought that such an “empty suit” could even become a U.S. Senator is itself appalling and atrocious but a tribute to the effectiveness of the corrupt political system in Chicago. But for him to think he is qualified to take the gargantuan step to the Oval Office is arrogant, asinine, and audacious. Have Americans lost their minds to think this phony savior can actually fill the shoes of former Presidents like Ronald Reagan or Harry Truman?

When I was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives, some of my very enthusiastic supporters said, “Representative Boys, you should run for the presidency.” One of America’s top Baptist pastors called me and suggested that I run for Governor. Whenever those events happened, I was so embarrassed that I cringed. The thought that I would even consider such a thing caused me to blush.

Obama Nazi Youth Corps Leader/Teacher Suspended

-By Warner Todd Huston

Ooopsie. Looks like the public school teacher that is responsible for turning a group of young black teens into an Obama Nazi Youth Corps has been suspended pending an investigation for posting the video of his mindnumbed paramilitary Obama youth drill team’s little soirée.

Joyce McGautha, superintendent of the Urban Community Leadership Academy, a charter school for students in fifth through ninth grades in Kansas City, Mo., said that the video was probably taken last May during the Junior Fraternity’s morning meeting at the school.

It turns out that this teacher was previously warned by the school’s administration not to pass the video around. But he did anyway.

Theaters Defrauding Ticket Sales From ‘An American Carol’ Film?

-By Warner Todd Huston

An American Carol debuted this past weekend and there have been some disturbing reports that ticket sales for the film have been fraudulently credited to other films in cineaplexes all across the country. The rumors are so persistent that the American Carol folks have added a section to their website for movie-goers to report the fraud. The filmmakers are reporting that at least 10 theaters are being investigated for this fraudulent practice.

So, if you have attended this film and happen to still have you ticket stubs, take a look at them to see if you were credited with having paid to attend the right movie.

There has also been a few reports by Eric Odom that some venues have incorrectly identified the rating for the film as sporting an “R” rating instead of the proper “PG-13” that the film rating board actually gave it.

We’ll have to keep an eye on this situation, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it turned out that certain people are trying to doom this film.

It’s Easy AND Illegal for a Foreigner to Donate to Obama

-By Warner Todd Huston

There have been quite a lot of stories of late proving that Barack Obama is getting millions of dollars in illegal donations from foreign sources. A fellow I know that posts on one of the websites I am connected with decided to experiment to see if he, as a Briton, could donate to the Obama campaign via the Internet and credit card. We’ll call him Jack for the purposes of this piece.

Of course, it is illegal for a foreigner to donate money to an American political candidate. But there have been many violations of this restriction by the Obama campaign thus far. Obama’s finances have been under fire for well over a year. Have they learned anything after all these illegal donation scandals? To put this to the test, Jack decided to see how easy it would be for him to donate to Obama and MCcain from England.

Jack writes to me about his experiment:

Charlie Gibson: ‘It’s Important to Expose’ Sarah Palin

-By Warner Todd Huston

So, instead of merely reporting the news, now reporters are the news? Apparently Charlie Gibson thinks he is, anyway. He gave an interview to the Toledo Blade on October 5 as if his opinions of the race for the White House are somehow more important than the news of the candidates. You remember the candidates, don’t you Chuck? You know, those guys who are actually going to be elected, the ones that you are supposed to be reporting on?

Gibson spoke to the Toledo Blade’s TV beat reporter Kirk Baird about an upcoming visit to Ohio’s Bowling Green State University and he said a few pretty revealing things to the Blade about how the media are treating the campaign.

Like many of his ilk, he appears in this interview to show a disdain for small town America, he obviously pretends not to see any bias among his comrades, he excuses that bias he does see and interestingly he claimed it was the duty of the media to “expose” Sarah Palin — an interesting choice of words, for sure.

Union Illegally Gets County Worker’s Contact Info

-By Warner Todd Huston

Government workers from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania have been finding unwelcome visitors at the doorsteps since mid-August. Union organizers from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) mysteriously found themselves in possession of the home addresses of every government worker in the county. This is, of course, illegal… yet, magically, the SEIU has the contact info anyway.

Naturally, every department head in the county is saying their agency is innocent of leaking the information. But, regardless who which inside operative of the union was helping them, it is not legal for the union to accept such information. The law states that only if the union receives a 30-percent yea vote for unionization is such information supposed to be provided to the union.

Commissioners’ Chairman Jim Matthews, Montgomery County Chief Deputy Solicitor and acting Human Resources Director Carolyn Carluccio, and Commissioner Joe Hoeffel all deny that they had anything to do with leaking the info, but some suspect Hoeffel, a Democrat that is a big union supporter.

The Obama Youth

By Selwyn Duke

It really does seem that the more evil a movement is, the more likely it is to enlist children in its cause. (Well, they really do make beautiful little human shields.) In the above video, 22 young, impressionable victims of misguided parents are singing a song in homage to Barack Obama as if he’s a god . . . or an extremely good imposter.

Interestingly, the way the story behind this has developed provides an excellent example of how leftists have absolutely no courage of their convictions. The Drudge Report had linked up to the video on Tuesday (9/30), giving it exposure to millions of ears, including many unsympathetic ones. Thus, some of those who responded to it in the YouTube comment section entered negative responses. So, lo and behold, what did these activist-minded leftists do? They turned the original version into a private video, meaning, only those they invite may now view it (here is the YouTube page of the original poster). Fortunately (or unfortunately – no exposure is almost always worse than criticism), though, other Web users had already posted it, which is why it’s still available.

Days Such as These: Wall Street Uncertainties

-By Marie Jon’

Our people in Congress who contributed to the Wall Street uncertainties must take their share of the blame. They have been exposed by new media pundits and conservative talk radio. The old drive-by-media will not be able to spin the culprits out of this problem. American voters have sufficient time to learn the truth before Election Day.

The people responsible for the fiscal mess lack good judgment, trustworthiness and character. We must extricate them and not allow their ilk into power again.

It is obvious that the Democrat party is not capable of exercising stewardship of our country in any capacity. They have become impacted by their own mean-spiritedness. Their intellect is stunted by an extreme liberal ideology; they are no longer able to aid their own country in time of war or peace.

Emergent Church Leaders: Wolves in Shepherds’ Clothing!

-By Don Boys, Ph.D.

Ken Blanchard, an Emergent Church leader wrote, “Does Buddha have anything to offer non-Buddhists in the work place? My answer is a wholehearted, ‘Yes.’” (Ken Blanchard, co-author of the One Minute Manager, from the foreword and front cover of What Would Buddha Do in the Workplace?) Ken also wrote, “Our folks get to hear words of wisdom from great prophets and spiritual leaders like Buddha, Mohammed…Yogananda and the Dalai Lama.” Rick Warren, David Jeremiah, Chuck Swindoll, and many others endorse contemplative leaders such as Blanchard, Foster, Willard, Henri Nouwen, and other mystics.

Rob Bell had a Dominican “sister” from the Dominican Center of Grand Rapids to speak at his Mars Hill (MI) Church. The Dominican Center at Marywood specializes in a wide variety of weird new age-type “opportunities” such as contemplation, labyrinths, and Celtic Spirituality. These “opportunities” reach back to the Roman Catholic mystics of the Middle Ages to make their mysticism relevant to us today. It is Roman Catholic heresy! Why would an evangelical preacher promote something like that? I think that Bell is cracked!

AP Says Palin is a Racist

-By Warner Todd Huston

Talk about an idiotic assertion, but the Associated Press just claimed that Governor Sarah Palin is a racist for saying that Obama used to “pal around with terrorists.” According to the AP’s Douglass K. Daniel, Palin is a racist because the word “terrorist” is construed now-a-days to mean a “dark-skinned radical Muslim” so that makes her a “racist” in his blinkered view.

See, it isn’t overt, according to Daniel, but there is a “subtext,” don’t you know? And, yes, he’s serious with this absurd claim, sadly. This Olympics award winning back stretch has to be seen to be believed.

Palin’s words avoid repulsing voters with overt racism. But is there another subtext for creating the false image of a black presidential nominee “palling around” with terrorists while assuring a predominantly white audience that he doesn’t see their America?

In a post-Sept. 11 America, terrorists are envisioned as dark-skinned radical Muslims, not the homegrown anarchists of Ayers’ day 40 years ago. With Obama a relative unknown when he began his campaign, the Internet hummed with false e-mails about ties to radical Islam of a foreign-born candidate.

Whether intended or not by the McCain campaign, portraying Obama as “not like us” is another potential appeal to racism. It suggests that the Hawaiian-born Christian is, at heart, un-American.

The FACT that Obama has close ties to an AVOWED American domestic terrorist has absolutely nothing whatever to do with race. It has everything to do with Obama’s terrible judgment. Obama isn’t being at all attacked for being “black” with this exposure of his ties to Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers.

There is also nestled in this story another bit of spin that has become the media’s excuse making for Obama’s ties to Ayers. (My bold for emphasis)

Examiner.com Attacks Gov. Palin’s Unborn Grandchild

Ben Kamin: In Year 2024 Palin’s Grandchild a ‘Bastard,’ Loser Palin Operates a ‘Lenscrafters,’ Hates Grandson

Apparently, Rabbi Ben Kamin thinks he’s a funny guy. Yes, he must be auditioning for SNL with his latest column on the Examiner.com, a Denver based, Internet news service. You see, to devise the newest way to smear Governor Sarah Palin, the “Rabbi” thought it would be hilarious to wonder what the life of Palin’s grandchild, son-to-be of Palin’s daughter Bristol, will be like in the year 2024. This odious attack piece imagines the boy being called “bastard” by everyone, imagines Palin to be a washed up, loser who fakes her love for the boy, presents Todd Palin as distant, disgruntled, loveless and depressed, and pits the boy in the role of a downtrodden, suicide risk without a father. All these smears against a child not yet even born!

Despite his obscene attempt at political analysis, this Kamin fellow somehow achieved the title of “Spiritual Life Examiner” with the Internet news outlet. I guess this so-called Rabbi is the Jewish version of Jeremiah “God damn America” Wright, because it just goes to show that claiming to be a man of God and actually living that charge are not necessarily one and the same.

LA Mayor Caught by Jilted Hubby, Flees Leaving Paramour in Dangerous Situation?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Sounds like a headline from a tabloid tattle sheet doesn’t it? Sadly, its more tabloid political campaigning too.

The story is that Mayor Kip Holden of Baton Rouge, Louisiana was “involved” with a white woman somewhere deep in the night in Baton Rouge when her hubby walked in on them. Things supposedly got heated and the jilted hubby popped the mayor in the eye. Well, the puff-eyed mayor ran out to his police bodyguard/driver and demanded the officer arrest the enraged man on the charge that he was a threat to the well-being of the wayward wifey. But, the officer reminded the pounded mayor that an official report would have to be filed if the man was arrested. With that, the mayor supposedly told his cop/driver to speed from the scene leaving the woman stranded in that possibly dangerous situation.

Naturally, everyone denies the tale. But, the focus is on who sent out the letter making these charges against the mayor instead of if the mayor was really IN that situation in the first place. Is it possible obfuscation by the mayor to hide his guilt, or justifiable outrage over a dirty political trick?

Were I a citizen of Baton Rouge, I’d want to be assured that the erstwhile mayor was NOT actually involved with another man’s wife and using a state paid police officer as his look-out before I worried too much about who sent out the letter disgorging the story!

Ohio Opens Election Precinct in Islamic Center that Hosted Extremist’s Visit

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Board of Election for Franklin County, Ohio opened the first election precinct in an Islamic Center in the state this year during the primaries and will do so again during the upcoming general election. Yet, this same Islamic center sponsored an appearance of an avowed supporter of the terrorist group Hamas and a group cited as an un-indicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land terror financing plot.

The Noor Islamic Cultural Center at Wilcox Rd., Dublin, Ohio, featured a visit by Hamas terror supporter Salam Al-Marayati who spoke in conjunction with an event put on by the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) held at Noor Islamic Center, a group connected by the government with the Holy Land plot.

Al-Marayati made news when he refused to meet the Pope, but also has said that the terrorist bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut in the 1980s was not a terrorist act.

It is a little hard to fathom why the Franklin County Election Board would allow an election precinct to be opened in such a place isn’t it?

Prices, Politicians, and Common Sense

-By John Armor

I’ve watched the stock market go up and down lately like a giant yo-yo. I’ve followed the details of how and why the so-called bailout failed in the House early this week, and will probably pass the Senate on Wednesday, and possibly the House a day later. In revised form, of course.

But there’s an aspect of this situation which applies to the bad mortgages, whose failures led to the collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. And applies to the failures of Lehman Brothers, Washington Mutual, AIG, Wachovia, the House of Representatives, the Senate, the White House, and both presidential campaigns.

What is the common denominator of all these failures? It is rapid decline in prices of mortgages, bundled mortgages, and businesses which trade on bundled mortgages, and finally, politicians who are rented by such businesses. The part of these related disasters which no one in the press has bothered to discuss, is basic.

What are prices?

The politics of the bailout

-By Michael M. Bates

So how did they come up with that $700 billion bailout figure? A Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com last week: “It’s not based on any particular data point. We just wanted to choose a really large number.”

That they did and, in so doing, scared a many Americans. Watching cable news after the House sensibly defeated the bill ratcheted up anxiety. When the markets closed with a record drop in the Dow Jones, the media mavens were shooting for their own personal best in high dudgeon.

How dare House Republicans fail to approve the bailout, particularly after Speaker Nancy Pelosi persuaded Democrats to – as one CNN anchor asserted – overwhelmingly back it? An undoubtedly innocent lapse kept him from reporting that almost a hundred Democrats voted against the measure.

THIS TOPIC IS OFF LIMITS!

-By Vince Johnson

cc: The Jump$tart Coalition for Financial Literacy for Youth – 919 18th St. NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, DC 20006

The “topic” that no one in America will discuss has to do with what we adults are doing to our children. We are doing it without their approval or consent. Politicians are careful to never mention it. We have devised all kinds of gimmicks to divert their attention. We spend billions developing games and movies of the most violent nature we can conceive. We have loosened discipline in schools in a manner that encourages kids to engage in perverse diversions like drugs, edgy tattoos, body metal, too much teen pregnancy and disgusting fads that focus attention on belly buttons and snuggy jeans worn far too low.

Whether or not this laxity in discipline is by design or the result of overwhelmed school systems does not matter. What matters is that we are all aware of it and we are not sufficiently motivated to do anything about it. We have led the kids to believe that the teachers answer to the principal. That the principal answers to the superintendent. That the superintendent answers to the Board of Education. That the Board of Education answers to the parents. That the parents answer to their children. And therefore, the kids are not required to be answerable to anybody!

Give Us Our Money Back. We’ll Fix It!

-By Frank Salvato

The ultimate example of opportunistic politics before good government was displayed in Washington over the past several days. Political operatives from both sides of the aisle did everything in their power to create a government-based solution to the financial crisis facing our country; a government-created problem. In the end the US House of Representatives voted down the highly contentious Wall Street bailout bill mostly due to the fact that we are within the 30-day window when voters do not forget actions taken by their elected officials. If only the public’s attention were always so focused.

In the end 90 House Democrats joined with 133 House Republicans in an effort to stop a measure that would have seen the biggest expansion of government in US history. In effect, it would have placed the coyote in charge of the hen house.

Many in our citizenry viewed the now-dead proposal as a “no fault” measure that would have allowed those responsible for this financial malfeasance to escape culpability and with good reason. Watching US Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) and US Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) – along with their leadership, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Harry Reid (D-NV) and Senior Senator from New York, Charles Schumer – harangue about how Democrats were taking the lead in crafting “bi-partisan” legislation to “rescue” the average American from the evils of Wall Street was the ultimate exercise in political hypocrisy .

False Rumor on CNN’s iReport Causes Apple Computer Stock Price Dip

-By Warner Todd Huston

One of CNN’s citizen reporters on their new iReport service caused a bit of panic for Apple’s stock prices this week when one of those reports featured a false claim that Apple CEO Steve Jobs had suffered a heart attack. With rumors swirling the stock price fell until official news from Apple quashing the rumor calmed investors’ fears.

Apple shares, which have in the past been shaken by the question of Jobs’ health, climbed more than 5 percent in early trade but retreated as the rumor gained momentum on Internet blogs. The stock at one point was down more than 2 percent, and hit a 17-month low of $94.65.

After Apple denied the report, the shares recovered, climbing to $104.04, up 3.9 percent on Nasdaq.

This particular incident is a result of a new effort by several news services offering citizens the opportunity to become local reporters by submitting their own stories on the Internet. CNN, the AP and Reuters all offer such an outlet for first hand news reporting by the public at large. It is all an effort for news agencies to get the edge on reporting breaking news.
