Entertainment Weekly: Stone’s ‘W’ Flick Disappoints… Because of ‘Tough’ Economy?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Entertainment Weekly’s Joshua Rich reported on the weekend’s box office returns for the latest releases on October 19 to let us all in on Hollywood’s successes and failures, because, you know, Hollywood is important and all. We find that the Chihuahua movie is still going like gangbusters ($70 million in three weeks) and the horrid movie “Max Payne” led the weekend’s receipts with $18 million. Oliver Stone’s slamfest “W,” though, earned a disappointing fourth place on its debut weekend.

So, what was EW’s excuse for this disappointing finish? According to Rich, “W” is failing at the box office because of “tough economic times.” It’s curious, though, that people have spent $70 million on the Chihuahua movie in these same “tough economic times” — and let us not forget that the latest Batman movie has made over $300 million. Still, the excuse for the fourth place finish for Stone’s pseudo-biopic is “tough economic times,” just the same.

But, Rich’s excuse is a claim that even Entertainment Weekly itself has recently disputed, at least as far as the box office goes. Only a few weeks ago, the weekend that right-wing comedy “An American Carol” debuted, the same Box Office Report column said that the “economy may be tanking, but the box office remains healthy, with probably the only year-on-year metric that’s seen an uptick.”

Amazingly, but a few weeks later, EW’s Joshua Rich suddenly finds that these “tough economic times” are responsible for the failure of the movie that maligns nearly everyone in the Bush family?

An American Carol: Filmmakers are NOT Saying there is a Conspiracy

-By Warner Todd Huston

Once again, we see the long knives sharpened against the right by employing innuendo and outright lies. This time it is against the movie An American Carol. On Tuesday, I reported that there was some concern that ticket sales for the movie were being diverted to other movies at certain theaters across the country. But, I never said there was a “conspiracy” to do so. The filmmakers also attempted to do some detective work to find out the veracity of the claims. But they didn’t call it a conspiracy either. Apparently simply asking the question, though, is too much for Wonkette and Huffington Post to handle. They had to gin it up as some wild-eyed claim of a “conspiracy” on our part.

In her inimitably profane and unprofessional style, Wonkette claimed the filmmakers are saying some great, leftist conspiracy is destroying the movie. The next day, an entry at the Huffington Post asserted the same thing. From there the lefty blogs took over to add to the din. Unfortunately for their hyperbole, the movie folks never asserted any such thing (for that matter, neither did I).

Theaters Defrauding Ticket Sales From ‘An American Carol’ Film?

-By Warner Todd Huston

An American Carol debuted this past weekend and there have been some disturbing reports that ticket sales for the film have been fraudulently credited to other films in cineaplexes all across the country. The rumors are so persistent that the American Carol folks have added a section to their website for movie-goers to report the fraud. The filmmakers are reporting that at least 10 theaters are being investigated for this fraudulent practice.

So, if you have attended this film and happen to still have you ticket stubs, take a look at them to see if you were credited with having paid to attend the right movie.

There has also been a few reports by Eric Odom that some venues have incorrectly identified the rating for the film as sporting an “R” rating instead of the proper “PG-13” that the film rating board actually gave it.

We’ll have to keep an eye on this situation, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it turned out that certain people are trying to doom this film.

Brokeback ‘Irritation’

-By Warner Todd Huston

The author of the famous gay cowboy story that the movie Brokeback Mountain was based on says the story is a “source of constant irritation” in her life. Apparently her porn addled fans keep sending her re-writes of the lurid tale made even more lurid with amped up porn scenes added.

To many in the gay community, Brokeback Mountain is insufficiently “gay” enough. Apparently, these people want it to be a wild tale of cowboy queens in everyone’s face infused with wild abandon. Instead of what the author wanted it to be, these people want it to be more akin to some San Francisco Gay Pride parade writ literati.

Author Annie Prouix told the Wall Street Journal that she is sick of the whole thing.

Mo Dowd, Matt Damon Repeat NutRoots Lie About Palin

-By Warner Todd Huston

**Video Below the Fold**

As if we needed another reason to think that the excitable Maureen Dowd and the empty headed Matt Damon are… well, excitable and empty headed… we get the newest raindrop in their river of blather as proof that their “research” into a subject seems to consist of hearing an unsupported claim and deciding it represent gospel truth. Our latest proof is that they both seem to have been taken in by a nutrooter lie, a fake quote that claims Sarah Palin said, “dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago.”

Both seem to have fallen for a parody of Governor Palin invented by a blogger whose post seems to have been taken literally. The following self-identified “fake Governor Sarah Palin Quote” was posted on August 30: “God made dinosaurs 4,000 years ago as ultimately flawed creatures, lizards of Satan really, so when they died and became petroleum products we, made in his perfect image, could use them in our pickup trucks, snow machines and fishing boats.”

Damon’s laughable little attempt at political analysis consisted of an interview he recently gave where he ripped into Governor Palin. He claimed he felt she was unqualified, yet then turned around one sentence later to say he knows nothing about her. Isn’t that like claiming to be an expert on something then immediately admitting that you’ve never studied the subject? Near the end of the interview, Damon said. “I need to know if she really thinks dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago, that’s an important… I wanna know that, I really do.”

Whoopi Thinks Slavery Still In Constitution?

-By Warner Todd Huston

**Video Below the Fold**

On ABC’s “The View” on September 12, Whoopi Goldberg asked Senator John McCain if she should worry about being made a slave again once he becomes president. Newsflash, Whoopi: There was this little fracas we call the Civil War where six hundred thousand Americans died and that resulted in the elimination of slavery from existence. Oh, and Whoopi, it happened nearly 150 years ago! Just trying to help you with that whole “history” thing, Whoopster.

Apparently, Whoopi is unaware that slavery was removed from the Constitution, because during a discussion about the Law of the Land on the TV talk show, Whoopi wondered if she should “worry” about being cast into chattel slavery should John McCain get in office and institute his desires that strict construction of the Constitution be observed by his judicial picks.

The subject of how McCain would handle the Roe v Wade abortion situation is what prompted Whoopi to blurt out her uninformed view of the Constitution.

Larry King Live: Jesse Ventura, Actor D.L.Hughley Call Republicans ‘Nazis’

-By Warner Todd Huston

It always comes down to this one, doesn’t it? Leftists and fringe politicos calling Republicans “Nazis.” Well, the “N” word was once again unleashed against John McCain’s Republican Convention on September 2 during CNN’s Larry King Live show. Actor D.L. Hughley and Independent former Governor of Minnesota Jesse Ventura both went for that shopworn epithet as King discussed the Convention.

Along with Hughley and Ventura, King had on former Clinton Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers who claimed that Republicans were saying with their convention theme that “only Republicans put their country first” ridiculously saying that Independents shouldn’t vote for the GOP because they are insulted so much. “I don’t understand why any independent or Democrat would consider voting for the McCain/Palin ticket,” Myers partisanly intoned, “after being called all night that only Republicans put their country first.”

Only a true sell out, though, would see it that way. Certainly the convention was cheerleading for its own members and saying that Republicans do, indeed, put their country first. But no one was saying that no one else does. Still, isn’t this what conventions are for? To cheerlead and buck up the troops? And tell me, Dee Dee, why should anyone outside the Democrat Party go over to their side of the aisle after the Democrats so monotonously claim that only they care about people? Isn’t that just as insulting?

Anyway, that partisan foolishness aside, it was left to Hughley and Ventura to get really into stupid by calling Republicans “Nazis.”

CNN Graphics Flub: McCain ‘Officially Wins Democratic Nomination’

-By Warner Todd Huston

For a Thursday funny, the grown-ups at CNN must have been napping when they allowed a half informed intern to type up their screen graphic on Wednesday. As the CNN “Sky View” camera roamed the audience during the Republican Convention the screen graphic helpfully informed the viewer that McCain “Officially wins Democratic Nomination.”

Psst, CNN. It’s McCain wins the Republican nomination. Just tryin’ to help ya out, there.

Sad Passing of a Hollywood Icon

-By Warner Todd Huston

On Monday, voice artist Don LaFontaine died. You may not know his name but you absolutely have heard his work. Think of yourself settling into a movie. The theater goes dark. The trailers begin. Dramatic music fills the room and the mellifluous sound of a baritone voice emerges to coo: “In a world where…”

That’s right, the movie trailer guy. He has given the dramatic reading for over 5000 movie trailers over the decades. His voice is now stilled. By all accounts he was one of the truly nice guys in Hollywood, too. No ego trip, full of mirth and good humor.

Here is a Geico commercial he did so you can hear and see him…

And here is a nice little video about his work…

RIP, Don… In a world where there is no Don LaFontaine… will we ever enjoy movie trailers as much again?

Kid Rock: Entertainers Should ‘Keep Their Mouths Shut on Politics’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Read it and weep, Dixie Chicks. Shove it Bruce Springsteen. Put a sock in it Johnny Cougar Mellencamp. Because, in a refreshing change of pace for the entertainment industry, Kid Rock is telling CMT Insider via People Magazine that entertainers should stay quiet on matters political.

How many times have you seen the uninformed blather of some goof from Hollywood, or some crank from the music industry filling your TV screen or oozing from your radio? How many low brow maestros have had your eyes rolling when they imagine themselves to have some prescient insight into matters of politics? Apparently rock singer Kid Rock is signing onto your piquancy because he has said that singers should just shut up about politics.

How This Music Flew WAAAY Over my Head at First

-By Warner Todd Huston

A few weeks ago, I published my first review of Tony Carey’s new Planet P album titled “Levittown.” In that review I made no bones about the fact that I hated it. I felt it was entirely anti-American, especially in context with today’s tumultuous times. I felt the political ideology underlying the lyrics was a sad, boring holdover from 1960s hippie culture, a blast from the past that seemed to have missed everything that has happened in the last 30 some years and one that certainly ignored the war that “radical” Islam had launched against America and the west since its biggest victory on 9/11. But since I wrote that review I have had cause to doubt my initial interpretation. In fact, I have realized that my reaction was based more on my own prejudices than in a closer examination of the album on its own merits.

So, here is my mea culpa. I have to admit that the true context and purpose of the album might have flown right over my head and I allowed my prejudices take over to fill in the blanks.

First of all, I have to say that I was not very proactive in linking “Levittown” with the previous album, “1931” (from 2003). I vaguely knew they form two parts of a trilogy, but I just didn’t take enough time to study the progression from one to the next. Taken together, they present a sort of history lesson of human made misery (is there any other kind?) and, of course, a warning of human stupidity. That, I did get, but what I didn’t get is that Carey wasn’t positing that this was only a fault found in western civilization. His is a story of human failings, not solely western ones. This trilogy was also supposed to be semi-autobiographical, so it is natural that it be set in the west of his experience. I was not aware of the semi-autobiographical intention with this project until now, though.

Before I go on with my changed impression, I feel compelled to reveal the prejudices that caused me to break bad on this one the first time ’round.

Singer Randy Newman on McCain’s Music List: ‘Then Again, Hitler Liked Some Good Music, You Know?’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Blender Magazine, self billed as “the ultimate guide to music and more,” is famous for compiling “lists” of music for one thing or another. This month they’ve gone politics with the candidate’s top ten favorite songs as reported by the campaign offices of John McCain and Barack Obama. To make a mountain out of this mole hill, they also invited as commentators on these lists aging funnyman Randy Newman and exhibitionist Gregg Gillis who goes by the stage name “Girl Talk.”

For the most part, it is all pointless gibberish that these two “experts” are blathering concerning the two candidate’s music picks. But two things stand out… but first the Blender lists:

Doctor Who Tackles Transgenic Menace

-By Frederick Meekins

As culture passes through various stages of technological development, the science fiction of a particular point in history often reflects the concerns regarding the horrors discerning intellects at the time feared could possibly be inflicted upon the earth should what is then considered new knowledge get out of hand. For example, throughout the 50’s and 60’s, speculative literature often focused on the impact of radiation as embodied by the origins of Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, and the Fantastic Four.

Though these characters still remain at the forefront of popular culture, in some instances their origins have been slightly reinterpreted to reflect the concerns of the new generation of authors putting their own creative spins on them and to capture the imaginations of a contemporary fan base. For example, in the Spider-Man films, the arachnid conveying its abilities to an unsuspecting Peter Parker is no longer just an average one accidentally bombarded with radiation but rather one deliberately tinkered with at the genetic level that somehow escapes lab captivity.

Is Amazon.com Deleting New Conservative Book Reviews?

-By Warner Todd Huston

(Important notice! I have radically changed my mind about the review of this music. See the new review.)

So, here is a curious thing. I have been reviewing books at Amazon for a few years now and never had the occasion to have one censored by Amazon.com. But, I just had two reviews in a row deleted by Amazon and it has caused me to wonder how often other conservatives have their reviews summarily eliminated from the Amazon site?

I have noticed, of course, that leftists use Amazon quite well to give conservative books a bad Amazon rating. In the past, whenever I wrote a positive review of a conservative book, for instance, I would be loaded up with negative votes on the review by Amazon visitors. But whenever I wrote a review of a non-political book, I got favorable votes on my review.

But, up until now, I’ve never had a review completely deleted by Amazon.

Is Warner Todd Huston a Mythical Creature?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Well, is this Warner Todd Huston fellow a myth? Is “he” really just a pen name for several writers from that vast right-wing conspiracy circling the web in their black helicopters?

Just ponder that question for a minute. Seriously, who has time to write two, three even four full opinion editorials a day? Who can appear on up to 15 websites or more daily? Who can be in Der Spiegel Magazine in Germany one day, the Washington Tmes the next, and then The New York Times? Who is able to have his work noted on the Air by the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Neil Bortz, Michael Savage, and countless other radio hosts across the country? Who is one of the most prolific writers on NewBusters.org?

Well, it seems that at least one of the fellow travelers on NewsVine thinks that this WTH is not a real person! NewsViner Joseph Caligiuri has a theory, you see:

Samuel & Mike, it has been my contention for months now that there is no such person as warnertoddhuston Mike as you seem to notice his many articles? I have figured that for the past 5 months it has averaged 2 a day. Its line is always bull and condescending to the Repubs. No insult will get you a reply and how on earth could one person seed, clip, and post on such a clock work basis. Call me Paranoid or call me left but in reality I am the retired Vietnam vet in your neighborhood who’s kids played with yours and my real name is joe caligiuri, With a smile and a grain of salt, Joe

Now I might be a little afraid for the kids in his neighborhood, but… you know.

Now surely you can trust Mr. Caligiuri’s conspiracy. After all, he has such levelheaded, and thoughtful articles on his main NewsVine page that his opinion must be unassailable. Important articles such as “Are YOU One of the 8 Million Targeted for Roundup by US Govt?,” and “Is A Complete Economic Meltdown Just Around the Corner?” grace his personal collection. He also features a nice poster called “Fascism – You really think it’ll be this obvious?” that features a double line of Star Wars Storm Troopers on the march down an inner city street.

Well, let me assure you, this guy — me — is a real person. I am not a myth or a figment of some right-wing conspiracist’s imagination.

OK, stop it with the silly conspiracy theories. It’s me, WTH (and no that doesn’t stand for What The H _ ll) I’m just an average American Joe that is interested in politics, philosophy, and fostering American exceptionalism at home and abroad.

There is no conspiracy. Many have met me in person. I have two goldfish, three sons (one in the Army), a wife whose patience I seriously and continuously tax on a daily basis and an extended family that I love dearly.

Sometimes I spell things wrong, sometimes my grammar is questionable. I have no staff and no editor — and some may think that’s painfully obvious, ha, ha. I’m just a work-a-day guy with a big mouth and more to say than anyone will listen to! I read too much history, watch little TV, and argue way too much with my coworkers. I like walks on the beach and an occasional pina colada…. or a beer.

Anyway, I just thought that this NewsVine reply was hilarious and that some of you out there might get a laugh out of it, too.

Lefty WaPo Columnist Quits Olbermann’s ‘Countdown’ Over Dispute With Host

-By Warner Todd Huston

It appears that Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank has dumped his appearances on MSNBC’s “Countdown with Keith Olbermann.” Host Olbermann issued a DailyKos diary explaining the dust up on Monday, August 4. According to Olbermann, the problem came in when Milbank violated Keith Olbermann’s well-known journalistic standards. Of course, I jest about that… not that there was a disagreement but that there are any journalistic standards in the Olbermann camp.

Now, for a man that is supposed to make his mark with words and for a man the left constantly claims is eloquent, Olbermann’s diary explanation is quite badly written. But, the gist of the matter is that Olbermann has supposedly been asking Milbank for “nearly a week” if an Obama quote in one of his Washington Post stories was sourced and reported accurately. Apparently Milbank took exception to having his own journalistic integrity questioned by a sports guy.

Intellectually Excavating Indiana Jones Unearths Epistemological Artifacts

-By Frederick Meekins

As a discipline, archaeology examines the artistic and technological remains of various cultures in the attempt to learn more about them. Often from these objects, students learn about more than the subject’s material nature but also insight into the beliefs and paradigms important to the human species at a particular time.

Probably the most prominent representative of the discipline in public culture is none other than Indiana Jones, with Stargate’s Dr. Daniel Jackson coming in at second. As a narrative itself created at a particular point in time, the Indiana Jones movies themselves can be placed under investigation to unearth what our own culture has believed at various points in recent history as well as the ideas shaping those having such influence over our own society.

Parson Moyers’s Prevarication

-By Thomas E. Brewton

Bill Moyers’s PBS presentation on Cleveland’s real estate foreclosure problem was a product, either of economic ignorance, or of deliberate distortion for political purposes.

Friday night’s Bill Moyers’ Journal on PBS placed the blame for Cleveland’s very real foreclosure problem on financial institutions’ greed, along with the Bush administration’s indifference to human suffering.

Applying the same analysis to the spread of AIDS, Parson Moyers might conclude that AIDS became a scourge because manufacturers of condoms were greedy. He would demand new Federal regulations to prevent AIDS, when, in fact, the root cause is immoral individuals’ rampant sexual promiscuity. If everyone had practiced sexual abstinence outside marriage, AIDS would be a minor footnote in medical journals.

New BBC TV Series Has ‘Extremist’ Christian Beheading ‘Moderate’ Muslim

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last week, the BBC aired a new TV series titled “Bonekickers” touted as a “groundbreaking” show where “history comes alive,” and a series that is “Based in fact.” The premier episode, though features an odd thing if “fact” is the aim of the Beeb’s new TV series: a Christian beheading a Muslim. Yeah, THAT is really a “fact” based premise, isn’t it?

Of course, the few remaining Christians in Britain have found themselves a bit put out by this “fact based” show where it is a Christian beheading a Muslim instead of the other way ’round.

And it isn’t just a beheading, the entire episode turns our current “fact based” reality on its head as the plot gives us a group of “right wing Christians” bent on purging England of its immigrant population, a group the TV series is fictionalizing as the “White Wings Alliance.” In a day when extremist Muslims the world over are killing people for not being a Muslim, this show features the exact opposite situation. Christian “extremists killing innocent, moderate Muslims. For what reason? Only the Beeb knows for sure.

The whole premise is so ridiculous that Andrew Anthony of the Guardian newspaper said, “A Martian watching TV drama of late would probably conclude that the country is crawling with homicidal Islamophobes, desperate to kill those few Muslims who have not already been interned by the government or shot by the police.” In his droll way, of course, Anthony is saying that none of that is happening despite the outrageous plot line that appears in this “fact based” series.

Andrew Breitbart: ‘Something’s Desperately Wrong’ in Hollywood

-By Warner Todd Huston

Andrew Breitbart, CEO of Breitbart.com, had a great op ed in the Washington Times yesterday about how Hollywood oppresses Republicans and conservatives in La La Land. Detailing the travails of Republicans in Hollywood — including destruction by Hollywood’s liberals of personal property owned by identified Republicans — Breitbart laments the “bullying” the self-proclaimed tolerant lefties mete out to those who walk the Republican side of the street.

Breitbart says of this ideological inbreeding:

But Los Angeles is a one-company town. And because of bullying (or what Democrats would call blacklisting or “political discrimination” if the shoe were on the other foot), Hollywood has become a one-party town. History will show this dynamic hurt both the creative and the political processes. In the absence of checks and balances we end up with a system that creates a mainstream film about Ronald Reagan — written, produced and directed by narcissistic and myopic partisans who only viewed the Gipper through the lens of partisan AIDS activism. Like anyone would watch an epic movie about America’s victory in the Cold War.

Hollywood is so left-wing that it hurts its own bottom line by constantly producing films that no one wants to see. Especially their current crop of dreck about the war in Iraq. Breitbart mentions the many failures of these left-wing, anti-Iraq war films.

More than a dozen box office failures vilify the troops without a single counter-perspective seeing the light of day. Yet one impactful and heartfelt pro-war film, Brothers at War, dares to tell the story of a noble and patriotic American family yet can’t find a distributor.

But there is another way to see how little America cares for these anti-American bombs. It is instructive to take a quick look at the box office takes for these unmitigated disasters to see how Americans have reacted to these films.

New Hollywood Film Casts Old West Cowboys as ‘Imperialists’

-By Warner Todd Huston

What’s history for if Hollywood and our other entertainment industries can’t take it and warp it to fit a current, partisan political agenda? In yet another example of Hollyweird’s foolishness, we have a new Robert Downey, Jr. vehicle that casts the American Cowboy as an “imperialist”. Of course, they will dress it up and try to hide this absurd message by having an alien invasion occur during a skirmish between Cowboys and Indians in the late 1800’s, forcing the two human enemies to unite to fight the aliens. This is supposed to be an “allegory.” Yes, with this “pulpy mix of the sci-fi and Western genres,” we have “allegory” in the fact that the space aliens are trying to invade and conquer the Earth just like the cowboys were doing to the poor, benighted natives. Just once I’d like to see a movie present Indians as real, three dimensional people instead of infantilized, victims.

After Downey’s great success with “Iron Man,” it is now reported that he is in talks to join “Cowboys and Aliens,” from Imagine Entertainment, a film based on a so-called graphic novel of the same name.

The story centers on an Old West battle between the Apache and Western settlers, including a former Union Army gunslinger named Zeke Jackson (Downey), that is interrupted by a spaceship crashing into the prairie near Silver City, Ariz.

Sounds “B” movie-like, but here is where we get the preachy “allegory.”

The story draws a parallel between the American imperialist drive to conquer the “savage” Indians with its advanced technology and the aliens’ assault on Earthlings, who must join together to survive the invaders’ attack.

Great, another example of a movie trying to be “relevant.”

Hollywood Miscasting: Danny Glover as President of the U.S.!

-By Warner Todd Huston

In a movie role miscasting that would be akin to picking Michael Moore to portray George W. Bush, a new flick that is starting production soon will feature an unlikely actor as the president of the United States of America. Leftist activist, and virulent anti-American Danny Glover has been tapped to star as a U.S. president that will be confronted with a “global cataclysm” in the film “2012.”

There’s a “cataclysm” alright. That such a U.S. hater would be picked to star as the occupant of the White House is as big a disaster as can be imagined. It is just amazing how Hollywood likes to stick their fingers in the eyes of the American public. Of all the actors in LaLaLand that they could pick to take the role of POTUS, they have to pick Glover, one of the worst anti-Americans in the business. And in a business over flowing with folks with anti-American ideas, that is really saying something.

The film is being written and directed by Roland Emmerich the director responsible for the recent stinker “10,000 BC.” After finishing up with her role as Condi Rice in Oliver Stone’s Bush’ debacle, super cute Thandie Newton is also reported to be in talks to play another part she is utterly unsuited for, Danny Glover’s daughter!

So, why do I say that Glover is the least likely actor to portray an American president? Let’s review just a few of Glover’s greatest hits, if you will.

Variety Hates Religious Theme of Movie Because…Well… it’s Religious

-By Warner Todd Huston

Robert Koehler of Variety is upset at Director Mark Pellington over his new film, “Henry Poole Is Here.” He can’t believe the audacity of a movie with religious themes actually having religious themes in it. Why it’s a crime, you see. Koehler is so upset that he blurts out the memorable critique of, “not since ‘The Passion of the Christ’ has a mainstream Hollywood product insisted so firmly in faith”!

Wow, “insisted” firmly in faith? Oh, the humanity. Why there oughtta be a law!

You can just feel the anguish that Koehler has that this director dared to feature religious conversion, religious discussions, and a serious attempt to legitimize faith in his film. Of course, to Koehler, that fealty to faith absolutely must be at the expense of science. In fact, he sees “jabs at science” at every turn in the flick. Koehler is entirely incensed that anyone dare make a movie that presents belief in God in a positive light as a force that can affect “growth” in people. The outright hostility that Koehler has for religion is shocking. It has to be seen to be believed.

Chris Matthews Holding Long Time Grudge Against Arianna Huffington?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Let’s take a little time off of more serious matters for some juicy gossip. Over at gawker.com there is a somewhat humorous little tale of an MSNBC photo shoot that saw TV yaker Chris Matthews of “thrill going up my leg” fame storming out after being told he might be required to share the camera frame with blog maven and born again lefty arianna Huffington. Apparently Chris is still mad at her for supposedly having hired a private investigator to stalk Tim Russert after an unflattering 1994 article written by Russert’s wife, Maureen Orth.

Matthews is reported as having said, “I will not be in the same f_ _ _ing picture as Arianna Huffington!! Not a chance of that!”

Apparently, Tucker Carlson was also in the shoot and the witness made the following comments about what was said:

“I want you to know that she hired a Private Investigator to spy on one of my colleagues; someone in the media.” Tucker walks in at that point and I’m literally writing down what he just said on a paper towel so I’d remember that quote. Oh yeah, so Tucker walks in and says, “Yup, he’s right, she did hire someone and nobody really talks about it, but I really like her so it doesn’t bother me.”

Well, it’s all rather interesting and certainly based on the claims of only one witness as reported by gawker.com. But, I agree with gawker that it all has a ring of authenticity to it. And the original posting of this little tale had at least one photo that made it seem as if the writer really was at the photo shoot.

But, what makes this story even more interesting to me is that the original blogger pulled down his posting of the photo shoot incident. It looks like John LaCroix pulled his post after gawker got hold of it and in place of the original post left this message:

Actress Dern: ‘Loved’ Making Katherine Harris Look ‘Clueless’ in HBO Film

-By Warner Todd Huston

It’s not often that a denizen of Hollywood is so crass as to admit that they enjoyed using their film work as a bludgeon with which to beat up a living person, but Reuters is reporting that the folks that made the upcoming HBO film “Recount” — and actress Laura Dern in particular — really relished making at least one person look like an idiot. Apparently Dern really enjoyed skewering Katherine Harris, the former Florida Secretary of State responsible for certifying the 2000 general election results.

Reuters helpfully informs us that actress Dern is a “self-described liberal” who “loved portraying (Harris) in the new HBO movie.” And, why was it so fun for our “self-described liberal” to portray Representative, then Florida Sec. of State Harris? Because they made her look “clueless about the workings of her office,” of course.

So, how is Harris depicted?

Hollywood Feud: Clint Eastwood vs Spike Lee

-By Warner Todd Huston

In this corner, Clint Eastwood, Dirty Harry himself. And in that corner, the self-appointed guardian of America’s black population, Spike Lee. It’s shaping up to be a battle royale, folks, with Lee rabbit punching the aging action star while Eastwood uses his smarts and experience to deliver a knock out blow.

In round one, Lee came out swinging at Director Clint Eastwood’s WWII films, “Flags of Our Fathers” and “Letters from Iwo Jima,” claiming that Eastwood “erased the role of black GIs from history.” Lee tried on his self-righteous air of moral certitude and labeled Eastwood a racist. “Many black veterans who fought in Iwo Jima were hurt that there was no representation of them in both of those films,” Lee said in an interview in Rome last year.

But not to fear for Eastwood losing the bout, as he is about to show us all that Spike Lee doesn’t have what it takes to go toe to toe with a master.

Round two began as the blow fell upon Eastwood in an interview with Focus magazine. Why was Eastwood such a racist, they wondered? Eastwood, momentarily rocked on his heels, came back with a knock out blow showing the world that, aging or not, he was still faster and smarter than the bespeckled, racemongering Lee.

“Does he know anything about American history?” Eastwood told Focus when asked about Lee’s criticism. “The U.S. military was segregated til the Korean War, and the blacks in World War Two were totally segregated. The only black battalion on Iwo Jima was a small munitions supply unit that came to the beach.

“The story was about the men who raised the flag and we can’t make them black if they were not there. So tell him: Why don’t you go back and study your history and stop mouthing off!”

Looks like Lee is on the ropes and being shown for the palooka he really is. The decision goes to Eastwood for showing us all that Spike Lee has no idea what he is talking about. Not that anyone suspected otherwise, mind you.

Dontcha just hate all this actor on actor violence?
