Patlak: Questions For The Cook County Board Of Review & Tax Facts Video 5 Released‏

From the Patlak for for Cook County Board of Review…

There has been an ongoing State’s Attorney investigation regarding influence pedaling at the Board of Review for the benefit of properties within Commissioner Brendan Houlihan’s 1st District. Commissioner Houlihan has been tight mouthed about this matter and has some important questions to answer regarding his competence, culpability and lack of oversight. This is further evidence that we need greater transparency and balance on the board and Dan Patlak will provide the necessary ethical leadership. Please read the News Release from the Cook County Republican Party.

With less than one month to go before early voting begins on October 11, we are releasing our fifth Tax Facts video. This video describes the three most commonly received property tax exemptions as well as the venues available for appealing your assessment.

We are still looking for new yard sign locations as well as heavily traveled locations for our 4X4 signs. Click here to request a yard sign and write a note if you have an appropriate location for a 4X4.

Conservative to Seek Daley’s Emptying Chair? R. Emmett Tyrell, Jr. Thinking of running for Chicago Mayor?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Our friend Pat Hickey has caught wind of some potentially interesting news on Chicago’s soon to be roiling Mayoral election now that Richard “King” Daley has decided he no longer wants the big seat. Conservative publisher R. Emmett Tyrell, Jr. has reportedly said he might be interested in taking a run at City Hall.

Pat reports that through the grapevine he heard of Tyrell’s possible campaign:

R. Emmett Tyrrell, the founder of The American Spectator is interested in running for Mayor of Chicago. Bob Tyrrell, like Governor Pat Quinn, is a proud Alumnus of Fenwick High School.

It sure would be interesting to see a man of high education and one so well spoken for the conservative cause throw his hat into the right, wouldn’t it?

$75 million in federal disaster assistance to victims of July flooding‏

From the office of Cook COunty Commissioner Tony Peraica…

The late July flooding that ravaged much of Cook County was salt in the wounds of many individuals and employers who are already fighting to recover from the economic downturn.

Those of us in the bipartisan contingent of local elected officials who fought for the federal “disaster area” declaration were pleased when that declaration came last month. So far, upwards of $75 million in federal disaster assistance has been distributed.

Thank you to all the residents, businesses, municipalities and townships that helped distribute and gather the data collection forms which helped us in our effort to garner this federal declaration.

BREAKING: Chicago Mayor Richard Daley Announces Retirement, Will Not Run Again

-By Warner Todd Huston

In a surprise announcement Chicago Democrat strongman Mayor Richard M. Daley has today said that after 21 years as Chicago’s mayor he will not run for another term.

“This is purely a personal decision, purely personal,” he told reporters as his whole family looked on.

Daley, the son of the famous Richard R. Daley, said that the reason he’s leaving the big chair is to be with his family. Interestingly, his famous father also served 21 years as Chicago’s mayor.

Daley has been under increasing pressure with multiple scandals over the last few years making a dent in his popularity, but few expected he would have had too hard of a time in yet another reelection campaign.

This opens up the floodgates of those who will vie for the job. Foremost of which may be Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel who recently said he’d be interested in running if Daley was not in the race.

Hayes Calls for Strength and not Weakness on War on Terror

From the Hayes for Congress campaign (2nd District)…

CHICAGO: Republican nominee for Illinois 2nd Congressional District Isaac Hayes released the following statement in response to President Obama’s Oval Office Speech announcing an end to combat operations in Iraq.

“Jesse Jackson Jr. supports a cut-and-run strategy in our War on Terror. He has voted multiple times against funding our troops, including under President Obama. He has also voted in favor of requiring a timetable for withdrawal from Afghanistan, discouraging our troops and encouraging our foes to mark their calendars.

“This type of weakness puts our troops in harm’s way as they valiantly continue the fight against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban. I am appalled at how soon Mr. Jackson has forgotten that the September 11, 2001 attacks were planned in Afghanistan. I am equally appalled that he would use the safety of our troops for political posturing. As President Obama stated yesterday in his address to the nation, we may disagree on strategy but we can still support the troops.

2 Governors, 2 Crooks. What’s Wrong With Illinois?

You have to admit, it’s a pretty bad indictment against the voters of Illinois as well as their politics…

-By Christopher Wills, AP

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Two Illinois governors from two different parties, two generations, two regions of the state. Both convicted of felonies.

Is there something about Illinois that encourages governors to go bad? Or is it just coincidence that two in a row have ended up as criminals?

A jury convicted Rod Blagojevich of lying to federal investigators about mixing political fundraising with his government work, but deadlocked on whether his other actions crossed the line into corruption. That should be resolved early next year, when the former governor faces a second trial.

Still, his troubles share a common denominator with those of already-imprisoned George Ryan: access to a river of political money. Illinois law let them accept any amount from any donor, including people who had something to gain from a friendly governor. The two also have something else in common – Illinois voters put them in office despite serious questions about their honesty…

John Garrido for 45th Ward Alderman

Think about the opportunity to have an Alderman on the city council who will:

  • Actually read city ordinances and raise common sense questions before voting on them;
  • Demand resources for public safety by properly staffing and equipping the Chicago Police and Fire Departments;
  • Speak out against selling off any more of our precious assets like they did with our parking meters and the skyway;
  • Be an advocate for small businesses who can bring jobs and revenue to our neighborhoods;
  • Never vote for a tax increase, but instead demand we properly manage our resources;
  • Welcome citizen interaction and work closely with neighborhood associations to rebuild and develop our Ward.

This is our chance to add to the growing independence on the city council and give true representation to the citizens of Chicago.

As to the ex-gov, Judge Zagel says that his re-trial should begin in the first week of January, 2011.

No news if the father and son team of lawyers will continue to represent the deposed governor. The Adamses continue to say they are Blagojevich’s friends, but Judge Zagel has given the pair until October to decide i they will continue as a part of Blagojevich’s legal team.

Rep. Melissa Bean’s Jackbooted… Librarians?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Last week a shocking video of a townhall of sorts held by Chicago, Illinois area Congressman Melissa Bean (D, 8th District) was released that seemed to show that she’d hired a couple of thugs to intimidate attendees from asking her questions that she didn’t want to answer.

The video kicked up a bit of controversy on both sides of the aisle. Conservatives pointed out that Rep. Bean was not only avoiding questions from her constituents, but sending her thugs to discourage those questions. Liberals said that the video was heavily edited and that the thugs were really merely “security guards” hired by the library, not Bean’s thugs.

But the liberal’s protest that these guys were “just” security guards hired by the library that was hosting the meeting does not explain why these guys walked over to the audience members to tower over them as they attempted to ask the Congressman a question. If these guys were not hired by Bean and if they were just there to assure that the townhall went without violence, they would more likely not have been interested in what participants were saying but only should they have gotten out of hand. None of the videos, not the admittedly edited one, nor the uncut one, shows anyone getting out of hand. No one attending this meeting was in need of the intervention of library “security” agents.

Govt Officials Take Day Off To Raise Campaign Cash for Bosses

-By Warner Todd Huston

Must be nice to be a boss at the Cook County Board of Review. While there are 436,000 appeals for property tax appraisals sitting in its offices, the bosses of the Cook County Board of Review took a day off in the middle of the week to attend a fundraiser for Cook County Democratic Chairman Joe Berrios. And they invited their employees to join them.

It’s all fun and games working for government, we all know.

A dozen Board of Review employees and many of those lawyers and tax attorneys that make their living dealing with the Board attended the golf outing fund raiser for Berrios.

But who cares about work when there’s fundraising to be done?

Dan Proft: Adam Antics Won’t Change Blago’s Fate

-By Dan Prof

You know how I know I’ve been in Illinois politics too long?

The comedy troupe of Sam Adam Sr. and Jr. was starting to make some sense to me.

For example, during his post-verdict floor show, Sam Adam Sr. said that US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald thinks Illinois is a banana republic.

Isn’t it?

A banana republic is marked by a politically unstable government ruled by a small and corrupt elite who use the power of the state to collude with favored monopolies in order to line their pockets.

If the fruit fits…

Ill. Dem. Senate Candidate Being Funded by Terror Connected Financier?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Daniel Halper asks a whopper of a question, one that could cause quite a lot of trouble for Democrat Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias of Illinois. Halper reveals that one of Giannoulias’ donors is a man connected with a foundation with link to terror organizations.

Sahloul is the former president of the Mosque Foundation, a Bridgeview mosque that has numerous links to terrorist organizations. The Mosque Foundation contributed roughly $400,000 to four Islamic charities that were later shut down by the federal government for links to terrorism. According to the Chicago Tribune, the organizations receiving funds were: the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, the Benevolence International Foundation, the Islamic American Relief Agency, and Global Relief Foundation.

Apparently the Mosque Foundation’s Imam led an effort to raise $50,000 to help with the legal costs incurred by Sami Al-Arian, a University of South Florida professor who was convicted of raising money for terrorism in Palestine.

So what about this? Is Alexi Giannoulias taking money from a group with certain connections to terrorism?

Is the what Illinois wants as their representative in the Senate?

Congressman Melissa “No Questions Please” Bean And Her Intimidating Enforcers

-By Warner Todd Huston

It is interesting to watch this video of a recent townhall held by Chicago area Congressman Melissa Bean (8th District). First she does her level best to avoid actually answering any questions and then when a constituent gets tired of the tap dancing she sends a guy that looks like a bar bouncer over to that person to stand over them in a threatening manner.

Notice that the enforcer comes over to intimidate not just the guy making the video here but another constituent, a middle aged woman.

Also I love the part about the questions. The congressman is right there for everyone to ask questions of her, yet she tells them to email her? Really? Email!?

If you’d like to contact the Round Lake Area Library where this happened, Lake County Tea Party has the contact info.

Upper Middle Class Now Seeing Higher Foreclosures in Cook County

-By Warner Todd Huston

As the housing bubble began to burst the lower middle class and poor areas of Cook County were immediately hit with mounting foreclosures. But now the upper middle class is seeing a higher rate. This only stands to logic.

As the Obama depression widens, as home prices stay in a slump, and as more and more people lose their jobs it makes sense that the upper middle classes are beginning only now to lose their homes at a higher rate than before. After all, these people have been likely living off savings they had that the lower classes and poor didn’t have to tide them over. But now those savings are being depleted. That and the job losses are reaching up into their income brackets and status.

What all this shows is that the Obama economy is still in horrid shape and getting worse.

The Daily Herald has all the stats in its recent, disheartening article from August 15.

And if you are one of those home owners facing foreclosure or financial troubles, there is a Cook County program that might help.

The program, which got $3.5 million from the county board, is open to county residents who have received a foreclosure summons from the Cook County Court and live in a single-family home, single-family condo or apartment building with four or fewer units. There are no income restrictions.

Those who are eligible can call (877) 895-2444 or use the new web features on cookcountyforeclosurehelp.org to set up an appointment with a housing counselor.

New Father Pfleger Reality TV Show: Blessing The Mayor’s Office

-By Warner Todd Huston

Those chickens have come home to roost… or at least they will during the upcoming mayoral election in the Windy City if the new reality TV show being shopped by Chicago’s incendiary Father Michael Pfleger is concerned.

Chicago’s gadfly Father Pfleger, close friend of Minister Louis Farrakhan, outspoken anti-gun crusader, sanctuary city supporter, and liberation theologist is the Southside religious leader who once openly wished for the death of a local businessman and also once said, “America is the greatest sin against God.” Pfleger has been the subject of many “reviews” by the Catholic Church and was once suspended after attacking Hillary Clinton as a “white person” who felt privileged because of her race.

New show producer, Bud Billikin of Chicago’s South Side Productions, Inc., has announced that the new show will follow the Father Pfleger as he embarks on the adventure of a lifetime, a run for Mayor of Chicago.

On Friday Pfleger is expected to announce his run against long-time Democrat strongman Richard Daley whose father, a Mayor before him, was famed for having “helped” JFK win the White House in 1960.

New Chicago Teachers Union Head is Same-Old-Same-Old

-By Warner Todd Huston

New Chicago public teachers union chief Karen Lewis could have come into office as a visionary that would bring some sanity to teachers union bloated demands in this era of the worst economy since the Great Depression. She could have seen the good sense of lowering expectations. She could have taken the stance of refusing to take pay raises for Chicago’s teachers as a motion of good faith in negotiating. Unfortunately, Lewis has proven herself to void of vision and stuck in the 1990s by continuing obscene union demands of constant raises and ever greater perks for union members.

In a day when unions are losing the last shred of good will that they once enjoyed in the public, Karen Lewis stood stiff-necked and refused to compromise with Chicago School head Ron Huberman. Lewis rejected giving up an automatic 4% raise in exchange for preventing layoffs.

She’d rather grab for the cash than save teacher’s jobs.

Illinois Congressman Dan Rostenkowski, 1928 – 2010

-By Warner Todd Huston

Disgraced former Congressman Dan Rostenkowski of Illinois passed away today at his summer home in Wisconsin. He was 82.

It says something about American politics that a corrupt influence peddler and ultimately an inmate and ex-con like Rostenkowski had a “summer home,” doesn’t it?

Being part of the corrupt Richard J. Daley Democrat political machine, Rostenkowski was in it up to his neck for his entire adult life and well did he wield that insider power built on deals made in smoke-filled rooms, by under the table agreements, and through influence peddling. He was a true “Chicago way” pol.

For folks our age (those over 40-years-old) Rostenkowski is best remembered as the pol that went to jail over the House Post Office scandal of the mid 1990s. In the end, in 1996, he pleaded guilty to two counts of mail fraud serving 17 months at the Oxford Correctional Facility in Wisconsin.

Temporary Senator Burris Challenges Special Election for Temporary Senator

-By Warner Todd Huston

It seems like a story written by a bad Hollywood script writer, but Illinois Senator Roland Burris is today challenging a federal judge’s decision to block any more candidates from being added to the ballot of the special election that has been ordered to fill the last few weeks of this Congressional session. Burris wants to be on that ballot but the judge said that only party nominees from the primary are allowed to be on the special election ballot.

First of all the whole thing is confusing. When Barack Obama vacated his Senate seat to take the White House, disgraced Governor Rod Blagojevich underwent a decision process to fill that seat that ended up getting him indicted. Blago gave the seat to long-time Illinois politico Roland Burris. Burris’ appointed term is up on election day but that would leave Illinois without a second Senator for the last 60 days of the legislative session. So, a federal judge declared that Illinois would have to vote on both a special election to seat a Senator for 60 days as well as the regular election for the full term starting after that in 2011.

Peraica: Today’s Taxing (and Troubling) News‏

From the office of Cook County Commissioner Tony Peraica….

There were two tidbits in today’s headlines that further support my push to fully repeal the Stroger sales tax hike in Cook County.

First, despite rising taxes and fees, tax collections are actually down in the state (again). As the Champaign News-Gazette reports, overall state tax collections are down 9.5% in July.

The reason for this decline? Simple: people are out of work. When they are out of work, their incomes drop (obviously). That leads to a drop in income tax revenues. They also consume less, which leads to a drop in sales taxes. It is for that reason that increasing the income tax and keeping sales taxes high will only further decimate our economy.

The workers, Anish Epsen, 40, and Armando Ramos, 36, were given 364 days and 270 days respectively, convicted of attempted absentee ballot violations, a misdemeanor. The pair faced several felony charges, but the judge only sentenced them on the misdemeanor charges.
