Presidential Character

This essay by Mark Alexander of The Patriot Post is an important resource upon the subject of presidential character and how John McCain and Barack Obama measure up in that respect. It is full of great insight and important links to the candidate’s respective records. Please be sure and have your friends who may be on the fence read this essay. It may help convince them of which way to go.

Presidential Character, By Mark Alexander

“The public cannot be too curious concerning the characters of public men.” —Samuel Adams

In his Inaugural Address on 20 January, 1961, President John F. Kennedy closed his remarks with these famous words: “And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”

With those words, JFK, considered by many to be the most exemplary leader of the Democrat Party in the 20th Century, asked Americans to put country first, a bedrock principle of the Party until the last few decades.

However today, the current slate of Democrats have turned Jack Kennedy’s national challenge on end, essentially proclaiming, “ask what your country can do for you, not what you can do for your country.”

In 1963, Martin Luther King stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and said for all to hear, “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Has his dream been realized, or have Democrat leaders divided us up into constituency groups, where we are judged by all manner of ethnicity and special interests rather than the individual and national character King envisioned?

Kennedy and King had it right, but the Democrat Party has squandered their great legacy, and betrayed us, moreover enslaving many Americans as dependant wards of the state.

Barack Obama has Little History of ‘Reaching Out Across the Aisle’

-By Warner Todd Huston

The mantra from Obama’s supporters — as well as the candidate himself — is that he is the one candidate most likely to “reach out across the aisle to get things done.” Unfortunately for the junior Senator from Illinois, there is no real history of him doing so. On the other hand, John McCain has done so repeatedly during his Senate career. But, let us focus here on Barack Obama’s claims.

The last time Obama made this claim was in an August campaign ad on what he claims are his efforts to secure loose nukes around the world. In this ad, Obama claimed that he “passed a law to keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorists.” Also in that ad he claims to have reached across the aisle to work with Republican Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) to do so and is pictured with Lugar. He is also depicted in the ad as visiting Ukraine and viewing ordnance of all sorts strewn carelessly about. It would appear from the ad that this legislation was Obama’s idea and that Lugar was but a helper in it all.

It is true that in 2005 Lugar and Obama wrote an op-ed (read their staff wrote it and they put their names on it) about the legislation they sponsored to coordinate efforts with other nations to reduce weapon stockpiles and smuggling. The measure was later passed as part of a larger bill. But the ad misleads on Obama’s hand in that legislation.

Obama Pushed on Our Kids in Grade School Lit Textbook

-By Warner Todd Huston

Over at RealDebateWisconsin Fred Dooley was contacted by the mother of a Racine Unified School District 8th grade student in Wisconsin public schools about an outrageous thing she found in her son’s school textbook. Apparently, in this textbook supposedly teaching about literature, one of the books being pushed as a perfect example of that subject is Barack Obama’s memoir Dreams from my Father. That’s right, a book by a current political candidate for president is being pushed on our children as “literature.” It also seems probable from campaign donation records that a principle member of the publishing company is a large Obama donor.

One would think that focusing on the ideology of a politician currently running for president would be a bit over-the-top even for our extreme left leaning system of education in this country. But there it is anyway. The book even presents a photo of the Senator at a campaign rally with signs advertising his campaign website address to help better indoctrinate the kids.

Of course, the very first question that comes to mind is this: how wide spread would this story have become if it were a Republican featured in a kid’s textbook? Would the left-o-sphere stand silent as John McCain appeared in school textbooks? Would the Old Media ignore such a story? Somehow, I doubt it. Who can doubt that the story would be such big news that the school district would have been shamed into taking such propaganda out of their school rooms apologizing for their lack of judgment as they do so. A book like this with McCain included would never even have made it out of the publishing house before stories would have been leaked to the press. Certainly it would be national news. But, in this case, the textbook is manufactured without opposition and is passed out to kids without a peep from the usual suspects.

Toledo Blade Pleads for Obama to Institute Communism?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Maggie Thurber of Thurber’s Thoughts alerted us to an outrageous example of the media arguing for a communist state to replace our patriotic American system. Sadly, this is where we’ve come in the US and Barack Obama is sure to drive it further in the anti-American direction should he win the White House in November.

The Toledo Blade’s lead editorial on Sunday, October 12, is a seeming plea to institute in America a chief communist principle: the “right” to a job. As anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of the Constitution knows, of course, there is no such “right.” Nor should there be. But this hasn’t stopped the Toledo Blade from pushing this anti-American notion and pleading for Barack Obama to take it up anyway.

Basing its article on the failed ides of FDR, our most socialist president, The Blade revisits Roosevelt’s showy, populist idea of creating a “second Bill of Rights” giving Americans a “right” to a job. The Blade calls FDR a “forward-looking president” and extols the unAmerican specifics of his plan as a solution for today’s problems, even making it seem as if U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is calling for the revival of this onerous new “Bill of Rights.”

Newest Left Attack on GOP: Rallies are ‘Inflammatory’ and ‘Violent’

-By Warner Todd Huston

For the last few days various groups like MoveOn.org, and the folks at Huffington Post, DailyKos and DemocraticUnderground have been beating the drum of a new theme to attempt to undermine the McCain campaign among the media. The newest claim from the extreme left is that McCain’s focus on the Obama/Ayers connection is responsible for fostering “threats” and “violence” to be ginned up among Republicans at McCain rallies. The left is pushing the idea that McCain is inciting riots and “hate” among GOP voters and they are pushing this theme in an email campaign to the main Old Media outlets.

On October 9, for instance, I got no less than 25 emails “alerting” me to a particular Huffington Post jeremiad that is amusing in its replication of the same behavior it pretends to condemn. In this childish bloviation the HuffPo writer uses as much name calling, guilt by association, and bald faced lies as he claims to be refuting from McCain. But, the germ of the argument is that McCain is inciting violence.

Indiana: More Registered to Vote Than Eligible, Media Misses Story

-By Warner Todd Huston

If Barack Obama wins this election, there will be absolutely no doubt whatsoever that one of the things that will help push him over the top is massive Democrat vote fraud. It’ll make the Democrats that stole the 1960 JFK/Nixon election for Kennedy look like Pikers. One example of this massive vote fraud is in the amazing fact that there are now more registered voters in Indianapolis than are actually eligible to vote. News at 11? How about no news at all.

Oh, sure, there have been stories in the media in Indiana covering the vote fraud issue. But almost to a report they are covered as mere charge and counter charge and end up making the GOP look as if they are engaged in just the normal partisan bickering. But no one is reporting the true nature of this vote fraud.

WANE, TV 15 out of Fort Wayne, for instance, reported on a visit to that city by Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita (R) who was there to talk about voter fraud. In Lake County, IN, the GOP is accusing the Democrats of vote fraud, but the report does not reveal any further details.

Florida Sheriff SHOULD Be Censured For His Palin Rally Introduction

-By Warner Todd Huston

I may shock some of you with what I am about to say. I agree with the left that Sheriff Mike Scott of Lee Country, Florida should be censured for what he did at the Sarah Palin rally on October 6.

But first the background. On October 6 Sheriff Scott appeared in uniform to introduce Governor Sarah Palin at a rally held at Germain Arena in Estero, Florida. As he introduced Gov. Palin, Scott told the cheering crowd, “On Nov. 4, let’s leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened.”

Naturally the far left is all upset that Scott’s use of Obama’s actual middle name is somehow “racist.”

And now my shocking agreement with the left… well, at least near agreement. I agree that Sheriff Scott should be censured by the Country Sheriff’s department for his actions.

There. I said it.

10 Questions For Mr. Obama

Vets for Freedom

Dear Senator,

The American Legion, Vets for Freedom, Military Families United and Foundation for Defense of Democracies would like to congratulate you on winning your party’s nomination for President of the United States.

This Tuesday, you will participate in the second Presidential debate of the general election where the candidates will answer questions from real Americans in a town hall format. This letter contains 10 questions on national security and foreign policy – questions that should be answered by any candidate seeking the highest office in our land. Our organizations ask that you address and answer these questions in Tuesday’s debate and in a written response.

Many challenges lie ahead of the next Commander-in-Chief: wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, global radical Islamic terrorism, a destabilizing Pakistan, an aggressive Iranian regime intent on building nuclear weapons, a strained U.S. military and energy dependence on Middle Eastern oil.

Truly, there has never been a greater need for strong American leadership.

Our combined organizations represent over 3.5 million constituents, which is America’s largest collection of veterans, gold and blue star families and national security experts. We have joined forces because we recognize the stakes have never been higher – the costs never greater. Our next President must understand the grave challenges we face and be prepared to lead and defend our homeland.

Again, congratulations on your victory and we look forward to your prompt reply.

Sincerely,

Dave Rehbein
National Commander, The American Legion

Pete Hegseth
Chairman, Vets for Freedom

Brian Wise
Executive Director, Military Families United

Cliff May
President, Foundation for Defense of Democracies

  1. Under your administration, what would an American-Iraqi partnership look like? What is your vision for the future of Iraq? Can we win? Are we winning? Must we win?
  2. Dexter Filkins of the New York Times recently reported on the overwhelming reduction in violence and local reconciliation among Sunnis and Shias in Baghdad. Do you agree that the “Surge” achieved its stated goals – militarily and politically – and is the reason for stabilization in Iraq? And, knowing what you know now, would you again support or oppose General Petraeus’ counterinsurgency strategy?
  3. General Petraeus recently reiterated his belief that Iraq is still a “central front” for our enemies, and therefore our country. Do you believe Iraq is, has been, or ever could be “a” or “the” central front against radical Islamists?
  4. Under your administration, will you consider winning in Afghanistan a necessity and will you propose more troops and/or a new strategy?
  5. With a new civilian government in place, unilateral American action against suspected al-Qaeda and Taliban targets has been condemned as a right of sovereignty by Pakistan. Do you support certain military action in Pakistan, despite the government’s warnings of retaliation, if there is credible intelligence of high value terrorist targets?
  6. Do you believe that we are engaged in a global war on terrorism? And do you believe that radical Islam is our generation’s transcendent challenge?
  7. The American military is strained from fighting two wars; under your administration, what would you do to strengthen our fighting force? And what impact would victory or defeat on the battlefield have on our force?
  8. Are you committed to a nuclear-free Iran? If so, what steps would your administration be willing to take to ensure Iran does not get a nuclear weapon?
  9. Should America invest in a comprehensive missile defense system? Or is it safe to assume that our contemporary enemies can be deterred, as were the Soviets, by the prospect of “mutually assured destruction”?
  10. America is sending over $700 billion overseas to buy foreign oil from countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela. Many of our petro-dollars make their way into the hands of terrorist organizations – we are funding both sides in the war on terror through our dependence on Middle Eastern oil. What steps will your administration take to make sure America starts on the path towards energy independence?

Obama’s Kenyan Pal… Killer, Despot

-By Warner Todd Huston

Raila Odinga is well known Kenyan communist, dictator, and despot, and is responsible for genocide. Barack Obama was his biggest American supporter. At taxpayer expense, Obama campaigned for Odinga in Kenya.

Odinga is just one more inhuman cretin in Obama’s orbit.

Obama Nazi Youth Corps Leader/Teacher Suspended

-By Warner Todd Huston

Ooopsie. Looks like the public school teacher that is responsible for turning a group of young black teens into an Obama Nazi Youth Corps has been suspended pending an investigation for posting the video of his mindnumbed paramilitary Obama youth drill team’s little soirée.

Joyce McGautha, superintendent of the Urban Community Leadership Academy, a charter school for students in fifth through ninth grades in Kansas City, Mo., said that the video was probably taken last May during the Junior Fraternity’s morning meeting at the school.

It turns out that this teacher was previously warned by the school’s administration not to pass the video around. But he did anyway.

It’s Easy AND Illegal for a Foreigner to Donate to Obama

-By Warner Todd Huston

There have been quite a lot of stories of late proving that Barack Obama is getting millions of dollars in illegal donations from foreign sources. A fellow I know that posts on one of the websites I am connected with decided to experiment to see if he, as a Briton, could donate to the Obama campaign via the Internet and credit card. We’ll call him Jack for the purposes of this piece.

Of course, it is illegal for a foreigner to donate money to an American political candidate. But there have been many violations of this restriction by the Obama campaign thus far. Obama’s finances have been under fire for well over a year. Have they learned anything after all these illegal donation scandals? To put this to the test, Jack decided to see how easy it would be for him to donate to Obama and MCcain from England.

Jack writes to me about his experiment:

Reporter Fired For Wearing Obama T-Shirt While Covering Obama Rally

-By Warner Todd Huston

15 year Detroit radio reporter was fired for wearing an Obama T-Shirt while on the job covering an Obama rally. As a result of this major breach of ethics, WWJ Newsradio 950 showed reporter Karen Dinkins the door — that’s right, she was fired.

I must say that it is pretty amazing to see a media outlet uphold ethics like this, especially in Detroit. But there you have it.

According to the local Fox affiliate, the radio station issued a press release.

WWJ Newsradio 950 Believes that our credibility with our listeners rests on the independence of our newsroom staff.

WWJ does not favor any candidate, party or issue.

While we encourage employees to exercise their rights as citizens, we expect them to be on guard against any actual or perceived conflict of interest when covering news stories.

Georgeann Herbert
Director of Programming

The TV station quotes a professor to the effect that the reporter should more properly been suspended instead of fired and that she will probably go to the courts and end up getting her job back. And, more’s the shame there. If ethics mean anything at all there really should be consequences.

But, at least the station took a stand.

Obama Gets His Own Wedding Anniversary Wrong

-By Warner Todd Huston

So, The One was in front of his subjects of the Black Congressional Caucus in D.C. and was wowing them with the mellifluous tones of his oratory and there stood the little missus. There was that mean Mama all a flutter over her man — you know, the one that made her proud of America for the very first time? — and the messiah deigned to notice her across the room.

The One thought to bring her before the enraptured crowd and let everyone know that the Dear Leader was having his 15th Anniversary with Michelle the Angry. “She just about has me trained. Almost. I still do stupid things she tells me sometimes,” he jests.

What a wonderful day. A 15th wedding anniversary… well, maybe Barack is a bit late with that celebration? You see, he is supposed to be celebrating his 16th wedding anniversary, not his 15th. From October of 1992 to October 2008 is 16 for most of us.

Oh, these things happen. Especially to men, let’s face it. Many, many men throughout time have forgotten little details like, Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, birthdays… men sometimes don’t have a mind for these dates so important to women. So, to be fair, we cannot do much else but chuckle at this little slip.

But, here is the thing. If John McCain had made such a glaring error the Old Media would be crucifying him over it. He and his wife would be the butt of jokes on every late-might TV talk show, would be portrayed as a doddering, senile old fool by every barely listened to PACIFICA or Air America host, and would be the hottest topic of ridicule from all the partisan pseudo-analysts in every medium from pulp to electronics.

And guess what?

Obama is getting a pass.

It’s hard for the media to even see daylight anymore they are so in the tank.

Obama Campaign Stifles Free Speech At University Rally

-By Warner Todd Huston

The candidate of change, the shining proponent of a “new way” in national politics, says that you aren’t allowed to bring a sign to his rally. So much for the right of free political speech. To add insult to injury, this rally was held at the publicly funded University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. So, now the government is lending the weight of its authority to squelch free speech. So, where is the hue and cry about this unAmerican activity? Did the media even note this heavy-handed policy?

But, it is all true nonetheless. The rally was held and weak-spined school officials bent over and meekly accepted the rules derived from the fascistic penchant of the Obama campaign with its anti-first amendment proclivities. Some few small voices questioned this oppression of American rights, but for the most part no one seems to have noticed that Virginians had their Constitutional rights quashed that day. Shockingly, some even thought it was a good idea.

The Obama campaign, falling back on the oldest dodge in the book, claimed that campaign signs were not allowed because of “security concerns.” Who can doubt, though, that it was instead because of “camera concerns”? The Obama campaign was far more interested in photo ops clear of McCain signs or other unwanted reminders that there are other opinions out there among the unwashed masses than that of sycophancy for The One.

Family Told Obama NOT To Wear Soldier Son’s Bracelet… He STILL Does?

-By Warner Todd Huston

**UPDATE – 09/28/08 PM**

Barack Obama played the “me too” game during the Friday debates on September 26 after Senator John McCain mentioned that he was wearing a bracelet with the name of Cpl. Matthew Stanley, a resident of New Hampshire and a soldier that lost his life in Iraq in 2006. Obama said that he too had a bracelet. After fumbling and straining to remember the name, he revealed that his had the name of Sergeant Ryan David Jopek of Merrill, Wisconsin.

Shockingly, however, Madison resident Brian Jopek, the father of Ryan Jopek, the young soldier who tragically lost his life to a roadside bomb in 2006, recently said on a Wisconsin Public Radio show that his family had asked Barack Obama to stop wearing the bracelet with his son’s name on it. Yet Obama continues to do so despite the wishes of the family.

Radio host Glenn Moberg of the show “Route 51” asked Mr. Jopek, a man who believes in the efforts in Iraq and is not in favor of Obama’s positions on the war, what he and his ex-wife think of Obama continually using their son’s name on the campaign trail.

Kissinger Says Obama Wrong on Kissinger’s Position in Debate Tonight

-By Warner Todd Huston

Here is something that the media should focus on. In the debates tonight, Barack Obama said that even Henry Kissinger agreed with Obama that on a presidential level a diplomatic meeting with as rogue a leader as Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a good idea. McCain immediately said that this was not true, but the issue wasn’t further addressed in the debate.

Well, now Henry Kissinger himself is attempting to set the record straight. Kissinger says that Obama was wrong, McCain was right. Stephen Hayes of the Weekly Standard has a short post to this effect on his TheBlog entry.

Kissinger Unhappy About Obama

Henry Kissinger believes Barack Obama misstated his views on diplomacy with US adversaries and is not happy about being mischaracterized. He says: “Senator McCain is right. I would not recommend the next President of the United States engage in talks with Iran at the Presidential level. My views on this issue are entirely compatible with the views of my friend Senator John McCain. We do not agree on everything, but we do agree that any negotiations with Iran must be geared to reality.”

Well, that about answers to that Obama lie.

This reply by Kissinger should find greater exposure to show that Obama really is out of his depth on foreign policy issues. Let’s hope the Old Media corrects the record.
