The Veracity of Karl Rove’s Political Analysis is Suddenly Suspect

-By Warner Todd Huston

During Delaware’s primary night Karl Rove was one of the analysts that sat with Sean Hannity on Fox News hashing out the results of the polls in several states. During his comments on Delaware’s winning candidate Christine O’Donnell, Rove eviscerated her as a loser even as she had just won the primary.

Rove claimed that O’Donnell is “nutty” and came straight out saying that O’Donnell cannot win the election in November.

Now, Rove is certainly entitled to his opinion and if he truly believes that O’Donnell cannot win in the general, then he should feel free to say so and we should accept it as such. But in this case we have a problem believing that Rove’s analysis is simply his honest opinion when we find out from The Freedomist that Rove was trying to cut a pre-primary deal to help Mike Castle to win the primary.

Conservative to Seek Daley’s Emptying Chair? R. Emmett Tyrell, Jr. Thinking of running for Chicago Mayor?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Our friend Pat Hickey has caught wind of some potentially interesting news on Chicago’s soon to be roiling Mayoral election now that Richard “King” Daley has decided he no longer wants the big seat. Conservative publisher R. Emmett Tyrell, Jr. has reportedly said he might be interested in taking a run at City Hall.

Pat reports that through the grapevine he heard of Tyrell’s possible campaign:

R. Emmett Tyrrell, the founder of The American Spectator is interested in running for Mayor of Chicago. Bob Tyrrell, like Governor Pat Quinn, is a proud Alumnus of Fenwick High School.

It sure would be interesting to see a man of high education and one so well spoken for the conservative cause throw his hat into the right, wouldn’t it?

9/12 Rally At D.C.’s Capitol Hill

-By Warner Todd Huston

(I am finally back home where I can get to my photo editing software, so this report is a few hours late, but…)

Over 50,000 patriotic Americans attended the 2010 edition of Freedom Works’s 9/12 March on the Capitol. Americans from all over the country attended and I below have a few particularly interesting stories you need to hear. But after an exhausting yet exhilarating day on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C., I finally have a few minutes to sit down and relate to you some of the things I saw this day.

The day started out drizzly and overcast and the clouds looked socked in. By noon we were beginning to worry that we’d be damp throughout. Fortunately, the Good Lord took favor on us and stopped the drizzle and even bestowed his glorious sunshine upon us not long after the program began.

On the other hand, our benevolent Metro transit authority wasn’t as benevolent and had fewer trains, delays and tracks shut down for repair. So, getting to downtown D.C. from and back to Crystal City in Virginia was no bright spot of the day.

I arrived at 11AM to pick up my press credentials and spent the next few hours roaming through the crowd asking about their trip to D.C.

One woman from New York told me that she had been to seven Tea Party events thus far and that she used to be a Democrat. “Not all of us are crazy left-wingers in New York,” she told me.

An elderly gentleman from Massachusetts told me of his service in the Army in the 1950s and was happy as a clam to have been able to make the trip to the 9/12 March this year.

But one story in particular was very compelling. I met a woman born in Cuba who said that she came to the 9/12 March because she understood communism and was dearly afraid that it was coming fast to the last place on earth that could fight its evils.

Schilling: “Hare Being Ranked 404th Out of 435 is Unacceptable’

From the Schilling for Congress campaign (17th District)…

The Knowlegis Power Rankings ranked Rep. Hare 404th out of 435 members of the House in terms of effectiveness

EAST MOLINE, IL–Bobby Schilling, Republican candidate for Congress in the Illinois 17th District, recently spoke about the Knowlegis Power Rankings. Knowlegis rates the effectiveness of each member of Congress based on various criteria including position, indirect influence, legislative activity, and earmarks. Rep. Hare ranked 404th out of 435 members of the House. Schilling said the people deserve someone who will work tirelessly for them.

When Did Calbuzz Become Jerry Brown’s Personal Communications Shop?

-By Warner Todd Huston

The widely read California website Calbuzz bills itself as a site offering political news, analysis, commentary, “and more about California and beyond.” During this election cycle, though, the “and more” seems to indicate that Calbuzz is operating as the publicity shop for Democrat Jerry Brown’s campaign for Governor because so far they’ve spent little time offering straight news about the race. Instead the site is constantly offering flattering Brown stories while just as constantly savaging Meg Whitman’s Republican campaign for that office.

Calbuzz gets a lot of respect from California’s Old Media and political establishment and that should come as no surprise. It isn’t necessarily because it is such a hard-nosed news service but because the website’s chief cook and bottle washers are members of that Old Media establishment.

Jerry Roberts is a journalist and former managing editor of the San Francisco Chronicle and Phil Trounstine is the former political editor of the San Jose Mercury News as well as a Democrat operative from former Gov. Gray Davis’s office. These two fellows have the inside track with both the Old Media establishment as well as the Democrat Party. This should make clear why they can’t write a positive story about Meg Whitman, too. It’s no wonder they can’t write a positive story about Whitman. It just isn’t in their DNA.

I guess the big question here is where does Jerry Brown send his check for all the hard publicity work that Calbuzz does for him?

The Fall Campaign Starts Today with Reforms & Respect

From Illinois GOP Chairman Pat Brady…

The Illinois Republican Party’s slate of candidates will work to reform Illinois state government, restore the state’s sinking economy and return respect and integrity to Springfield in November.

There is hope for our state, and as bad as it’s been under the Blagojevich and Quinn Administrations, we must not lose heart.

This campaign is about what Republicans will do to erase our deficits, get our state’s economy moving and put people back to work. Voters have a real choice this fall: more of the same Democratic control or real, honest reforms that Republicans will fight for if given the opportunity.

Hultgren (14th District):8 Weeks Until Election Day‏

From the Hultgren for Congress campaign (14th District)…

As we enjoyed this labor day long weekend I wanted to thank you personally for your support and enthusiasm. I spent much of the last week on the road, and will be traveling across the 14th District again for the next two weeks to talk to voters about jobs and the economy.

Our representatives in Washington think they know best how to get our economy moving again, but the reality is that they’re just making things worse. We know that the private sector needs to create jobs and put people back to work, and for that to happen, Washington needs to cut the taxes and red tape that are holding us back.

This November, I believe the people of the 14th District will recognize that Washington is broken, our current Congressman is part of the problem – not the solution – and will support our campaign to get our economy back on track.

Lt. Col. Allen West: A Voice for the Leavenworth 10

Paul A. Ibbetson

Is somebody watching over you today? Is there someone somewhere that is willing to put your well-being ahead of theirs? Those are powerful questions that we seldom ponder here in America. Why? The answer is that safety, security and most importantly freedom, the delicacies sought in so many places in the world, are things we in America nonchalantly pile upon our plates daily like hungry diners at an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord. Say what you will, but the reality is that even in the worst of times we really have it good. However, America, the magnet for so many people of the world, has been maintained and has flourished by the blood of the American soldier. The soldier’s willingness to fight and if need be, die on foreign soils against vicious enemies for the nation’s survival is often underestimated.

The war on terror brought a realization to most Americans through the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, that we had to take a stand against radical Islamic extremism. In one of President George W. Bush’s best moments as the leader of the free world, Americans took an overdue offensive stance against terrorism. American fighting forces, along with others across the world, have been fighting a brave battle against the scourge of Islamic terrorism. Unfortunately, the battle to defeat terrorism has been as much a battle within as on the outside. In a political environment not seen since Vietnam, the American soldier has been placed in the very untenable situation of being charged with finding victory in the battle zone, without being able to incorporate the normal tools by which victory is attained. Political correctness on the battlefield handed down by those in government without the belly for war or simply American victory, has threatened the lives of American soldiers in more ways than one.

A Candid Talk with Allen West

-By James Simpson

Freelance writing doesn’t pay much, but a compensating benefit is the opportunity one finds to meet and speak with really interesting people. Congressional candidate Lt. Col. Allen West (USA, Ret.) is one such person, and I interviewed him for this article recently.

Col. West is one of the most promising candidates on the GOP horizon for this election. He is a genuine conservative, unafraid to speak his mind and more importantly, take action to demonstrate his commitment.

His candidacy has gone national on the strength of his inspiring speeches like this one, this one, this great Tea Party speech here, or his challenge to Democrats here. But many forget, or are not aware of the controversy that first put him in the national spotlight.

Conservatives Still Fighting to Get on Illinois Ballot

-By Warner Todd Huston

Doug Ibendahl of Republican News Watch reminds me of something I should have mentioned previously. There is an entire party, one officially recognized by Illinois, that is fighting to get its slate recognized and on the 2010 ballot. The Constitution Party of Illinois was thrown off the ballot but still might have some juice left to reverse that decision.

I hadn’t posted on the struggle that the Constitution Party was going through before because frankly I expected that they wouldn’t end up having enough petition signatures to make the ballot. Turns out they did. Yet the state election board threw them off the ballot anyway and really for no legitimate reason.

The whole petition challenge aspect of Illinois politics is its most venal form of good-old-boyism. Both the GOP and the Dems work hand-in-hand to destroy anyone they don’t want on the ballot. It is disgusting, gutter politics at its worst. Not to mention that it is wholly un-American to deny the voters their choice of candidates.

Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) on Obamacare

Last week, Congressman Peter Roskam was a guest blogger for The Heritage Foundation

If at first you don’t succeed, change the message. That’s the lesson learned when it comes to the new trillion dollar health law passed this spring.

One of the central advocacy groups who pushed for the Obamacare recently held a confidential ”messaging” conference call with the progressive movement where they revealed the results of extensive polling on the new law. Remember when the left was confident their controversial health care vote would soon be cheered by the public? The thinking was that Jane and John Doe simply needed more time to understand the two and half thousand page bill, because the year-long health care debate wasn’t enough time for them to get a grasp on it.

Labor Day Message from Bill Brady‏

From the Brady for Illinois Governor campaign…

As we head into Labor Day, I wanted to send my personal thanks to every one for coming out and supporting our campaign as I traveled across Illinois outlining my plan for creating real jobs, and for putting Illinois back to work.

In Illinois and across America, Labor Day celebrates not only the traditional end of summer, but also the historic legacy of labor, and of the generations of working men and women who built our great nation.

But this Labor Day, as we celebrate with family and friends at hometown parades and back yard barbecues, we also remember that too many of our fellow citizens are struggling, and out of work.

ILL. GOP Chair Pat Brady: A Republican Tidal Wave‏

From Illinois GOP Chairman Pat Brady…

On November 2nd, Illinois will elect a Republican to the United States Senate and a Republican as the next governor of Illinois. Don’t take my word for it – that’s the latest prediction from one of America’s top political prognosticators. According to Stuart Rothenberg, “This cycle is bad for the Democrats and particularly bad for Illinois Democrats.”

Hayes Calls for Strength and not Weakness on War on Terror

From the Hayes for Congress campaign (2nd District)…

CHICAGO: Republican nominee for Illinois 2nd Congressional District Isaac Hayes released the following statement in response to President Obama’s Oval Office Speech announcing an end to combat operations in Iraq.

“Jesse Jackson Jr. supports a cut-and-run strategy in our War on Terror. He has voted multiple times against funding our troops, including under President Obama. He has also voted in favor of requiring a timetable for withdrawal from Afghanistan, discouraging our troops and encouraging our foes to mark their calendars.

“This type of weakness puts our troops in harm’s way as they valiantly continue the fight against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban. I am appalled at how soon Mr. Jackson has forgotten that the September 11, 2001 attacks were planned in Afghanistan. I am equally appalled that he would use the safety of our troops for political posturing. As President Obama stated yesterday in his address to the nation, we may disagree on strategy but we can still support the troops.

Paul Ryan: Obamanomics Has Failed

-By Warner Todd Huston

Congressman Paul Ryan (R, Wis) and former Congressional Budget Office Director Doug Holtz-Eakin came together early this week to lambaste Obama’s failed economic policies.

In a conference call to supporters and the press, CBO Director Holtz-Eakin said that there is “no evidence” that “the stimulus has really worked” and that Obama’s Keynesian fixes simply won’t work.

There is nothing about Keynesian stimulus that is going to fix those problems. The spending by the government has gotten worse, has not solved the housing problem, and has also not been successful. Instead, the key to more rapid economic growth is going to have to be the business sector and international trade.

Representative Ryan echoed that assessment, saying:

BREAKING: Murkowski Concedes in Alaska

-By Warner Todd Huston

Another one of Mitch McConnell’s favorites just went down in flames as Senator Lisa Murkowski just bowed to Alaska’s new GOP candidate for Senate, Joe Miller.

Miller is far more conservative than Murkowski who was vying for the Ted Stevens award for pork.

As the New York Times says

Mr. Miller shocked the political establishment here and in Washington last week when he emerged with a narrow lead, 1,668 votes, after the primary vote, on Aug. 24.

Chalk up another win for a Palin pick, too, as Miller got former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s support in this primary.

At first tongues were wagging that Murkowski was doing better than expected in the absentee ballots but as the night wore on it became clear that she was never going to be able to make up the lead that Miller had going into the counting.

That she conceded is a very good thing for the race in Alaska because it means that the bruising primary is over and Miller can spend his time and money on his Democrat opponent and not on a recount battle.

I am pleasantly surprised that Murkowski did concede, too, because yesterday an RNC hired gun lawyer was quickly flown up to Alaska and that could have portended a hard fought recount battle.

But it isn’t to be and that is a good thing.

Now let’s shake hands in Alaska, Republicans, and get to the job of putting Joe Miller in Washington D.C.!

Schilling Insists on Debates in Quincy and Macomb, Suggests opening debate broadcasts to all media outlets

From the Schilling for Congress campaign…

EAST MOLINE, IL–Bobby Schilling, Republican candidate for Congress in the Illinois 17th District, released the following statement in response to Rep. Hare’s recent demands regarding debates:

“The 17th District consists of over 650,000 people and five media markets. I don’t think that two debates carried by just two TV stations is fair to the voters. Quincy and Macomb encompass large areas of the district with thousands of voters. It makes no sense to exclude these two cities from having debates, especially when Rep. Hare agreed to have a debate in Springfield, which only encompasses 4% of the district. I also believe there is a major conflict of interest by keeping these debates exclusive to public television. Rep. Hare has direct campaign ties to the President of Network Knowledge, a company that licenses public television stations in Springfield, Macomb, and Quincy. I believe we should open the debates to all media outlets that want to broadcast them. I also believe the debates should be held in front of a live audience with each campaign getting an equal amount of tickets for attendance. This will create a fair environment with complete transparency for the voters of the 17th District.”

Frank Rich’s Tea Party Lies

-By Warner Todd Huston

Frank Rich’s column in the New York Times opinion section today was at the very least two things: Lies and the rehashed work of another writer. But it was also a third thing and that third thing was cover for his buddy in the Oval office and for the hard-core left-wing agenda he’s trying to force down our throats. Rich lent that cover by desperately trying to discredit “the Tea Party “as a funded-from-the-top, sham of a movement. The truth is, though, that “the Tea Party” is not funded by shadowy, rich right-wingers. It isn’t funded at all in most cases.

First of all most of what Rich wrote was but rehashed words from Jane Mayer’s slam against the Koch Brothers of New York. Three quarters of what Rich penned really came from Mayer’s New Yorker piece on the philanthropists. So, big demerits for Frank Rich for simply appropriating Mayer’s piece.

But the real point of Rich’s piece was to pile onto Mayer’s slanted attack piece with some echoed slams against the Tea Party movement in order to discredit it all. Rich is desperate to make the movement seem like a marionette show with rich “sugar daddies” funding it and controlling it from the top.
